Arched door: DIY device. Do-it-yourself arched doors: how to install correctly Arrangement of interior door arches

Arched doors are gaining increasing popularity in the construction segment. On the one hand, this is an accessible opportunity to change traditional decisions, on the other hand, it is a correction standard sizes entrance and interior doors. The “arch” theme began with the appearance of arched corridors, after which it smoothly moved to door structures.

The main classification of arched doors is carried out according to the following criteria:

  • design features - entrance and interior doors, prefabricated and non-removable;
  • arch shape - round, oval and rounded;
  • manufacturing material - wood, plastic, metal, glass, veneer, mirror, combined products;
  • the shape of the arc is round or gothic.

In addition to the fact that arched doors themselves are becoming more and more in demand, it is worth noting the popularity arched openings both under doors and as an independent structural element.

Types of arched openings

An arch is a relatively simple design solution that allows you to divide a room into zones without the use of doors and partitions. The most popular place to install an arch is, of course, the hallway, but arched openings at the entrance to the kitchen, balcony/loggia, recreation room, etc. are becoming increasingly popular. This is an opportunity to change traditional solutions for organizing space.

Varieties of shapes and materials of manufacture

According to the shape, the outlines of the arch are divided into:

  • lancet;
  • round.

In turn, the round outline is divided into the following main types:

  • classic - even radius;
  • modernist - arc (oval) with a rise;
  • romantic - with a central straight part and rounded corners of the desired radius;
  • ellipse - a regular or irregular oval is taken as the basis of the shape.
  • horseshoe-shaped - part of the national interior in the form of a smooth or pointed upward semicircle;
  • Gothic - with an elongated pointed shape without smooth elements.

Types, material of manufacture, design

The main difference and aesthetics of arched doors is the presence of a rounded top that follows the smooth line of the doorway. Until recently, this model of doors belonged to the eastern form of organizing space and was little used in European culture. After a while non-standard shape doors have conquered their niche, and today few houses can do without arched openings and doors. The main secret of popularity lies in association. What is an arched door in the understanding of each of us? This is the entrance to the palace, to a beautiful tower. This is a trend from the past, when kings ruled the world. It is this feeling of a fairy tale that attracts with its special design.

Arched doors can be classified according to the most different signs, of which the main ones are:

  • place,
  • material,
  • structural characteristics.

Installation location and material of manufacture

There are 2 main types in this category - interior and entrance. The first option is doors installed inside any room. The main material is plastic, wood, combi with glazing.

Entrance doors are the main element of the entrance group of all kinds of premises. For their production they are used various types metal, veneer, wood, plastic, less often - tempered glass

Due to the peculiarities of the design and the complexity of manufacturing the panels, plastic and wood are most often used; for interior doors, combination with glass panel is the most successful. The wood used for the production of the entrance group must undergo a complex of treatments to prevent the development of fungi and mold.

Design characteristics

The first and main feature of arched doors is the structure door design, which is traditionally divided into:

  • a single complex of canvas and opening, characterized by a perfect match of the two elements due to point cutting and individual assembly. The most expensive type of doors;
  • standard door complete with arched part. In this case, the manufacture and installation of both parts is carried out separately. Recommended for installation when choosing swing and sliding models.
  • single-leaf doors are the most popular type doors are not only arched, but also standard form. Can be installed as entrance group, and in the house.
  • double doors - the ideal solution wide doorways opening. Recommended for installation even in small rooms, where, due to the wide area, the “working” part will seem 2 times more focused.

Rounding the corners significantly reduces the height of the opening. Calculate it using the formula: 2.10 m + ½ opening width. This figure may be higher, but it should not be reduced.

Do it yourself

A variety of standard doors allows you to choose the right product for any size. Arched doors are not yet so popular among manufacturers and therefore you may either not choose any model at all or not find one suitable size. Therefore, we suggest you make wooden arched entrance doors yourself.

You can actually make the canvas yourself, but the boxed part will have to be purchased either at a specialized store or go to the forest.

Tools:

  • jigsaw;
  • electric milling machine;
  • belt sander with a set of sandpapers of several degrees of grain;
  • board 5.0 cm;
  • small wedges;
  • beams and wood screws, with the height of the screw being at least 3 cm greater than the width of the beam;
  • wood glue or PVA glue.

Procedure

  1. First, determine the net width of the opening, for which you subtract the thickness of the box part from the total width of the opening and plus 2-3 mm of margin.
  2. The arch will be smooth and beautiful if its radius coincides with the radius of the doorway. To do this, you select boards, and then determine by width how many are needed, based on the fact that the boards are laid horizontally.

To make arched doors, always use only wood that has undergone forced drying under industrial conditions (chamber, heat, air exhaust, etc.). A damp or insufficiently dried fabric will eventually begin to move to the side, sag or warp in other ways.

  1. Using an electric router, you cut grooves on the boards that will allow you to connect the parts together as tightly as possible. On the reverse side you also make small shallow grooves for forced ventilation. Cut the grooves at the rate of 3.0 mm wider than the thickness of the board.
  2. Clean the boards with a soft brush and apply a middle layer of PVA glue or other carpentry analogue. Give it time to dry.
  3. Cut a circle from the workpiece and check the level of the plane.

The outline of the shape depends on what the arch will be like in the future. So, if you are planning an arch in the shape of a semicircle, mark a point at the very bottom. Take a marker or pencil and attach a thick, non-stretchy thread to it. Attach its end to a point and draw a semicircle with a marker.

If the shape of the arch is pointed or elongated, you will need a metal ruler. Place a point at the bottom of the workpiece, from which you draw a line straight up at an angle of 900. Next, place the ruler on its edge and carefully adjust it to the radius mark and along the edge of the workpiece. Trace the ruler with a marker. Do the same with the other side, maintaining complete symmetry of the lines.

  1. Using a jigsaw, cut the workpiece along the drawn lines and grind it. First with a larger abrasive, then with a fine one. This completes the arched part.
  2. The bottom of the door is prepared in the same way, except that the board is now laid vertically.

Be sure to add a horizontal part to the door, which will maximize the life of the door.

The finished canvas consists of three elements:

  • lower;
  • shield made of vertical slats;
  • arched part.

You connect, as already mentioned, using the tenon-groove principle, for which you use a router to cut tenons, which should protrude by 2-2.5 mm. Remove the dust, apply wood glue and place the parts on top of each other in order. Be sure to support the already assembled canvas with wedges.

After 2-3 hours, after the glue has completely dried, carry out the finishing treatment almost finished door any protective agent. It can be “Pinotex” (universal impregnation) or any other. The most the best solution will use clear varnish. On the sunny side, laminating coatings quickly lose their effect, but on the shaded side, it is simply unnoticeable.

Nowadays they have become very popular interior arches instead of a door. They give the room extravagance and elegance, helping to free up space in small apartments that was occupied by doors when opened. They are installed between adjacent rooms, in the hallway or in the kitchen. Can .

The arch may have different configuration and be made from different materials. They are usually made of plasterboard. It is suitable for installation and bends well.

Preparing for work

Before making an arch instead of a door, you need to measure the opening, plan a specific arch shape and calculate its dimensions. It is necessary to measure the width of the door opening and its height from the floor. Moreover, it is necessary to take into account that the arch will reduce the opening by about 10-15 cm. If the height is less than 2 m, then it is better not to make an arch, but to decorate the opening with decorative details made of foam plastic.

The width of the arch will be equal to the distance between the side walls of the opening. Measure the opening and divide the distance in half. This value is necessary to make a correct semicircle. Before installing the arch, you need to find out what shape it will be.

You can install a semicircular arched structure made of plasterboard. When planning installation, you need to find out whether the walls are vertical and level enough. This is necessary for the design to be correct. If the walls of the door opening are not level enough, then their surface must be leveled with putty.

Materials and tools:

  • drywall;
  • stand profile;
  • dowels;
  • screws;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • roller with needles;
  • arch corner with holes;
  • latex putty.

First, the front parts of the arch are performed. You need to pick up 2 pieces of drywall. The measurement and cutting of pieces is carried out uniquely for all materials.

An even semicircle can be done in two ways.

  1. First way. It can be made using rope if it does not stretch. This rope must be tied to a simple pencil. Then mark the middle of the semicircle, more precisely, its radius. For this, the value that was obtained by measuring the opening width is used.

If the opening width is 1 m, then the radius of the semicircle will be 50 cm. From the edge of the plasterboard sheet, where the top of the arched structure is located, you need to measure 60 cm and draw a straight line. This value was obtained by the following calculations:

50 cm + 10 cm = 60 cm.

10 cm is the distance from the top of the opening to the top point of the arched structure.

Then plasterboard sheet cut to fit the width of the opening (100 cm). Then the middle is marked on the drawn segment. To do this, measure 50 cm from the edge. We got a point for drawing a semicircle.

You need to take a pencil with a string, measure 0.5 m, and draw a semicircle from the resulting point. This is how a kind of compass was made. If everything was done correctly, then the semicircle should be even.

Then electric jigsaw or use a bladed knife to cut out a semicircle. Thus, a rectangle with a semicircle was obtained. The width of this rectangle is 100 cm, height 60 cm.

  1. Second way. First you need to prepare a soft baseboard. It is used to draw a semicircle on a sheet. Cut out a rectangle measuring 100x60 cm. Measure 50 cm from each edge and draw 2 lines. Place a mark where these lines connect.

Take a soft plinth and bend it on both sides. Thus, a semicircle is obtained. The most convex part of the semicircle should be flush with the mark. The edges of the semicircle should meet the edges of the rectangle. Draw an arc and cut it out. It is better to do the work together with an assistant.

How to make a frame

To complete the frame, you need a profile prepared earlier. The frame will be made of guides.

First you need to attach two guide profiles along the width of the opening (1000 mm). They will be installed on both sides of the opening. They are fixed with dowel screws if the walls are concrete. If the walls are made of wood, then you need to use self-tapping screws.

In order for the arch to be flush with the wall, its frame must be installed 11-12 mm deep into the opening. After installing drywall and puttying, the plane will be level.

Then, on both sides of the opening, 2 side parts of the frame, 600 mm long, are installed and fixed. To do this, you need to cut off the bottom of the profile at an angle. If this is not done, then this part of the profile will be noticeable, due to the fact that the arch at the bottom narrows.

The manufacture of the main part of the frame is completed. Next, the front arched elements are installed on it. The work is done with metal screws.

If you want to make the arch more complex shape, then you need to make an appropriate frame for it. Next, you will need to close the end part of the arched structure. For this purpose, it is necessary to make a frame on which the bent strip will be installed. This frame must be made from a 27x28 mm profile.

The work is performed with metal scissors, which have a spring mechanism. In order for the profile to have the shape of an arc, you need to cut it accordingly: 2 of its 3 sides. At the profile U-shape. It is necessary to turn the profile clockwise to the side, then it will be located inside the installed right part of the arch.

The second profile is fixed in the same way opposite it. Then cuts are made along the middle and upper parts of the profile every 40 mm. This creates a kind of snake of the required length. It is installed along the edge of the semicircle. The steeper the bend, the more often the cuts need to be made.

In the life of any person, repairs occur from time to time. It may be associated with the purchase of a new house or apartment, with the desire to update the interior of a familiar home. One way to organize space is to create arched structures. Arches in a house can perform two completely different functions: unifying space when an arch is placed instead of doors; room division large area to highlight several zones with different functions.

Of these two options, the arch in the doorway is more common, giving more interesting view apartment layout. When replacing a door with an arch, it is necessary to consider the pros and cons of such a solution. The undoubted advantages for small apartment refers to the expansion of space. When combining kitchen and small room you can design a dining room where it will be convenient and pleasant to dine with family or friends.

If in long and narrow corridor If several arches are installed, then the feeling of narrow passages like in a train carriage disappears.

If an informed decision has been made to install the arch, then we proceed to choosing the shape of the decorative structure:

  • Rectangular;
  • Semicircular, having an equilateral rounding;
  • Semi-arch having only one rounded corner;
  • Trapezoidal, the design of which consists of curved lines;
  • Fantasy.

The downside of an arch instead of a door is that you can’t close the door to highlight your piece in the apartment. If an arch is placed instead of a kitchen door, the smell of cooking food will spread everywhere.

How to make an arch in a doorway

Once the shape has been determined, it is recommended to make a template from cardboard, fiberboard or other available materials. Creating a template helps you visualize the final result and more accurately calculate quantities necessary materials. When designing, we take into account that installing an arch in an existing doorway will reduce its height by approximately 10-15 cm. If the dimensions of the opening are not sufficient for implementation design ideas or the owners of the apartment are quite tall people, then you will have to increase the height of the doorway. Changing the height or width requires high costs, including labor, financial and time to coordinate redevelopment in the relevant organizations. Determining the shape and creating a template are the first stages of making an arch.

They are followed:

  • Dismantling the old door frame (if this has not been done previously);
  • Preparing the wall surface for arch installation;
  • Creating a frame;
  • Installation of an arched structure;
  • Finishing and decoration.

All this work can be entrusted to professionals, but if you have the desire, you can do everything yourself.

Instructions: how to make an arch with your own hands

The cheapest and most common material for constructing an arch, as for many other works, is drywall. Dismantling the old one door frame. For more modern designs it's simple. You just need to unscrew the screws and carefully remove the trim. Old houses present various surprises to their owners. IN ancient times nails were used to secure the trim to the bars.

Carelessness during such work can lead to the destruction of ceilings or their damage.

After dismantling, we carefully evaluate the intermediate result of the work. The former doorway and the wall next to it should be clean, smooth, and without serious damage. Therefore, when cracks and chips are detected, we putty, this will help subsequently finish them correctly and efficiently. If you plan to level the walls with plasterboard, then this can be combined with the construction of an arch.

When the doorway is prepared, a U-shaped frame made of metal profile. It consists of one horizontal segment equal to the width of the doorway and two vertical segments, the length of which corresponds to our future design. The frame should be on both sides of the opening, that is, we actually make two of them. Two rows of 10 cm holes are marked and drilled in the profile. Then holes are marked and drilled using a hammer drill at the ends of the wall. The guides are attached to the walls.

It's time to use the pre-cut template. Sheets of drywall are marked along it, two parts for each arch are cut out using a jigsaw and attached with self-tapping screws to the installed profiles. It is also necessary to mount a profile along the edges of the attached template parts. Since we are looking at how to make a semicircular arch, an important step is to give the drywall profile the appropriate shape. To do this, we cut the edges of the letter P of our profile to the full height. The profile becomes obedient and accepts what we need geometric shape. After this, it takes its place along the edges of the cuts.

The next stage requires accuracy and attentiveness. We need to correctly install the arched fragment of our arch. The profile has already been installed, so we measure the length of the arc and the width of our part, cut out a rectangle. The difficulty is that the rectangle doesn't really want to become an arc. If ordinary drywall is used, then the main method of “pacifying” it is to wet it and at the same time give it the desired shape. But this option may seem difficult to ordinary home craftsmen who are afraid of making mistakes. In this case modern technologies suggest we use arched plasterboard, which takes a semicircular shape much more easily than a regular one. We fasten our part in the usual way, moving from the center of the arch to the edges, and we are almost at the finish line.

We process the edges of the arch, cutting off the excess. After this, we treat the joints and edges of the drywall with perforated paper tape or sickle tape, putty, and process sandpaper. The choice of putty for finishing depends on the future decor of our arch.

Remained finishing work, which we will return to a little later. If you plan to install lamps in the semicircular part of the arch, then you need to do this before you start puttingty. If you are afraid to take on an unfamiliar material, then you can install an arched structure made of plywood. In this case, two methods are possible: the first is similar to working with drywall, the second is described below.

Do-it-yourself door arch: making from plywood

To build such a structure, first measure the size of the arc of the future arch. A rectangle is cut out of a sheet of thin plywood, the width of which is equal to the width of the doorway and the length is equal to the size of the arc. Plywood is a malleable material, so the cut rectangle is evenly moistened, allowed to lie for a short time and bent to be installed in the opening.

It is important to place the cut out part evenly and neatly; this will require some skill.

Be sure to secure the part with self-tapping screws in the center, then along the edges. We fill the space between the resulting semicircular arch and the walls polyurethane foam and wait for it to dry. If there is a lot of free space, then part of it can be filled with foam parts, and the remaining free space with foam. We cut off the excess foam and putty on the facade of our arch using sickle.

Less common designs are arches made of wood and brick. Despite the beauty and durability of such arches, their installation requires more expensive materials and the participation of professional craftsmen. The most interesting stage left in creating an arch in a doorway with your own hands is finishing. Various decorative materials can be used here.

Most common:

  • Wallpapering;
  • Decorative plaster;
  • Coloring;
  • Gluing finished foam finishing elements;
  • Usage decorative stone and other types of finishing.

How to make a door arch with your own hands (video)

Thus, it is quite possible to make an arch in a doorway yourself, using a regular repair tool and available materials. The result of such work will be pride in your work and an original decorative element in the design of the apartment.

Often interior passage in the apartment they do not close the door, but leave it open. This allows you to elegantly unite the space and make the interior design of the rooms more elegant. To do this, you can purchase a ready-made structure from assembled elements or cut out individual parts with your own hands and then assemble everything in the doorway. But how to make an arch yourself so that it looks smooth and beautiful? After all, there are a lot of materials and technologies for installation; you need to choose wisely.

Designer arch

What arches can be installed in an apartment

Installation of an arched structure in place of an interior door can be done without the involvement of professional builders. You just need to choose the type of arch and the materials for its manufacture. Following the step-by-step instructions below will help you avoid mistakes and make an arch with your own hands.

Arch curves can be the most bizarre

Design features and significant differences

In construction, arched structures are supports for overlying elements of walls and structures. But in apartments, doorways to the corridor and between rooms are not load-bearing. In the first case construction materials are selected based on serious external loads, and in the second they must withstand only their own weight along with the finishing.

Arch with bar counter

An apartment door arch, installed instead of a door, is an element of interior design. Its frame can be made from a lightweight profile for gypsum boards or bars with a cross-section of 20–30 mm. This design can easily withstand the weight of finishing materials. You just need to firmly fix it on the walls so that the decor doesn’t warp or fall off after a couple of weeks.

Reference! In private houses and city apartments, an open door arch between rooms serves exclusively decorative functions. Bearing loads in this case are placed on concrete walls on the side or a lintel above the opening.

Ready plastic arch

Shapes of arched openings and their capabilities

There are many options for arranging interior arches in shape:

  • "Classic".
  • "Romance".
  • "Modern".
  • "Ellipse".
  • "Trapezoid".
  • "Portal".

The most popular types of interior arches

The first option at the top has the shape of a regular semicircle, and the last one has strict rectangular outlines throughout its entire height. The rest are intermediate versions between them. But other variations are also possible with one side “support” or two curved posts.

Form door arch and its design are chosen to match the design style of the room. This takes into account the height of the ceiling, the size of the opening and the features of the rooms on both sides. They will look perfect in some homes classic shapes with a regular bend in the form of a semicircle, and in others - a rectangular portal. This is more a matter of the taste of the home owners and the general style of interior decor. Some people even prefer cone-shaped contours.

  • Classic version It is recommended to choose only when high ceilings in the area of 3 meters and above.
  • In typical panel high-rise buildings It is better to design the entrance to the kitchen with a “MODERN” arch.
  • For a wide doorway from the hall to the corridor, “ROMANTIC” with large wide racks is more suitable.
  • The rectangular “PORTAL” looks best in an interior where clear horizontal and vertical lines predominate in the decoration. This type of doorway design is ideal for houses made of timber or logs. In such a home right angles will look elegant and fit the theme as much as possible.

Classic in the interior

What to build a designer doorway from with your own hands

To quickly make an arch in the doorway of an apartment, it is enough to purchase a set of prefabricated elements made of plastic or laminated chipboard lumber. They need to be trimmed the desired height, and then secure it in the places specified according to the instructions. But such options are standard and quite expensive. Plus, it’s not possible to fit every opening finished model With the right sizes.

Components interior arch system

To make panels of arched posts and arches you will need one of the following materials:

  • drywall;
  • plywood;

Advice! It is better to choose plasterboard sheets for covering the frame. GCR can be finished in the future a large number various materials. However, thin plywood is much easier to bend.

Finished veneered arch

The frame for an interior arch can be made:

  • from a metal profile;
  • from wooden blocks 20x20 and 30x30 mm.

Brick decoration is ideal for connecting a balcony

You can also make an arch instead of a door from concrete, brick or aerated concrete blocks, and only then decorate them with one or another finishing material. But these options are more for those who like capitalism and solidity. Plus they weigh a lot, in old apartments apartment buildings It is impossible to build anything from them.

The use of metal is limited not only by its weight, but also by its high cost. Manufacturing metal structures of complex shapes at home is a very difficult project to implement in practice. The easiest way to work with your own hands is with drywall and its profile.

Step-by-step instructions for self-installation

The photos and recommendations below will allow even a novice master to cope with the improvement of a doorway. To do this, you first need to create a frame, and then sheathe it and decorate it. You can do everything yourself, you just need to do everything consistently and without mistakes.

Scheme of a plasterboard arch

Preparing the doorway

  1. First, the leaf and frame of the existing door (if it exists and is in place) are dismantled.
  2. Then the opening is expanded to the planned dimensions.
  3. There is no need to plaster the cut walls under the frame; they will still be covered with sheathing. It is enough to straighten them and remove everything that can fall off (plaster, pieces of concrete, falling bricks). The main thing is that the supporting profile can be secured securely and in a strictly vertical position without tilting.
  4. If you are planning a backlit design, then you need to install the wiring in advance.
  5. Measurements are always taken at several points in the opening so as not to miscalculate the dimensions.
  6. If the walls are uneven, then the thickness of the racks (depth of the arch) is selected according to the thickest point.
  7. To simplify marking and cutting sheet material for cladding arched frame, you need to make a life-size template from cardboard. This will allow you to avoid mistakes and preview how the contours of the structure being formed will look.

Important point! The upper part of the arch takes about 10–15 cm away from the height of the doorway. At least 20 cm should remain from it to the ceiling. When calculating and marking, these numbers must be taken into account.

Fastening the guides

Creating a load-bearing frame

  1. To make a frame for an arch, you first need to create a main contour from a profile around the perimeter of the opening, fixing it to the walls.
  2. Then the top curved part will be attached to it frame system. Sometimes only a curved element is made on top, but this is only possible with perfect smooth slopes.
  3. Vertical guides in the doorway are attached with an indentation from the plane of the interior wall by the thickness of the plasterboard sheet plus 2 mm for subsequent plaster on top of it.
  4. After plastering you should have a single, flat surface.
  5. On each side and at the top of the arch being created, you will need to secure two such profiles parallel to each other.

Advice! If the walls are made of wood, then self-tapping screws are sufficient to attach the guides, but in the case of concrete or brick, dowel screws will be required. The spacing between fasteners should not exceed 30 cm.

If the columns of the arch are made of small thickness, then two arches can be easily replaced with a wide profile. All cutting and bending manipulations in this case are carried out according to a similar pattern. However, transverse installation will no longer be necessary. When using wooden blocks instead of a profile, the frame for the arch is made using a similar technology. Only changes source material carrier frame structure.

Two ways to bend plasterboard sheet

Rough sheathing of the frame

After completing the assembly of the arch frame, all that remains is to mount the gypsum board or wood board. To give plywood or fiberboard the desired shape, they will have to be pre-moistened, fixed on a template and steamed with a hot iron.

Ideally, you need to use special arched plasterboard, reinforced on both sides with non-woven fiberglass. It is enough to knead it longitudinal direction and give the desired shape.

There are two ways to bend a regular plasterboard sheet: wet and dry.

  • Wet technology involves soaking back side GCR with water and gradually bending it onto a template of the required shape and fixing it on it. This process is lengthy; haste can lead to rupture of the cardboard layer of the sheet. And the resulting part can be installed and secured with self-tapping screws on the arch frame only after the plaster has completely dried.

Advice! It is possible to speed up the process of moistening gypsum board to give it elasticity using a needle roller.

  • The dry method involves making parallel cuts on one side of the sheet, which affect the plaster and the upper outer layer of cardboard. But the front cardboard layer remains intact. The bend is smooth and of the correct shape.

Installation of the main element of the arch

Cutting sheet material is best done with a jigsaw. When using a hacksaw, the cutting edges will certainly be less even. The sheathing is fastened with self-tapping screws in increments of 5–6 cm. After fixing it, the edges of the plasterboard and plywood sheets. And then a special one is attached to the curved edge to protect it from chipping. plastic corner with perforation.

GKL fastening

Putty for perfect surface leveling

The next stage of finishing a plasterboard arch is primer and putty. After applying the first one, you need to wait until it dries. And fiberglass mesh is used to reinforce the second layer. The corners are also reinforced and leveled using a mesh.

The edges must be smooth

Surface putty

Putty joint with wall

Mesh reinforcement

Edge reinforcement with mesh

Next apply the third finishing layer. The putty, which has hardened after 10-2 hours, is sanded with sandpaper to remove excess and make the surface as smooth as possible. There should be no protruding screw heads or dents left on it.

This is what the arch should look like

Decoration of the structure and design techniques

You can finally decorate the arch in the apartment with your own hands and make it beautiful:

  • painting in color with the walls;
  • wood paneling or plastic panels;
  • pasting with wallpaper or veneer;
  • finishing with decorative stone on a gypsum base;
  • decoration with mosaics and mirrors;
  • decorating using stucco or ready-made columns.

Simple finish with backlight

Materials in finishing Interior arches are used both natural and artificial. The choice here depends on the general design idea for apartment interior design. To improve the doorway, you can use polyurethane stucco and even textiles. All options are acceptable, the main thing is that they are in harmony with the surrounding decor.

Shelves in design arched passage into the corridor

Framing columns made of clinker or decorative stone looks original and stylish. Manual installation will require time and diligence, but the result will certainly please the master. The uniqueness of the apartment with this method of decoration is guaranteed.

Decor artificial stone

Arch finishing natural wood will bring solidity and grace to the house, and the mosaic pattern invented by the owners will make the decor unique. The main thing is not to overdo it with the design, making the design a tasteless heap of elements. different styles. All interior details should be in harmony with each other and complement each other.

Stucco columns in an arched doorway with wide walls

Often regular painting in white or brown It’s quite enough to complete the design, making the arch with your own hands beautiful and elegant. However, some require built-in lighting and additional decorative elements in accordance with the style chosen for the apartment. It will take more time to finish the arched opening, but it will be worth it.

Decor with corner and wallpaper

It’s not difficult to install and decorate an interior arch instead of a door yourself. For work, it is enough to have metal scissors, a screwdriver and a hacksaw in the house. But if you have no experience with these tools, it’s better to trust professional installers.

MDF is a relatively new material on our market, however, it has already become widespread. Moreover, it began to be actively used not only in furniture industry, but also in construction. In particular, in lately this material is often used for arranging arches; in fact, this article is devoted to this topic.

Below I will tell you in detail how to install an MDF arch with your own hands, and also introduce you to some secrets that will allow you to cope with this task quickly and without any effort.

Types and design of MDF arches

Recently, you can find a variety of MDF arches for doorways on sale, which allows you to choose them for interiors decorated in any style.

Depending on the design, they are all divided into two types:

Advice!
When choosing an arch, keep in mind that it should be the same color as the baseboard.

Regardless of the type of construction, all interior arches made of MDF are sets that consist of the following parts:

All parts are connected to each other using glue and dowels, which are included in the kit. Thus, interior arches made of MDF are assembled like a construction kit during the installation process. Below we will look at this process in more detail.

Tools and materials

Before you begin installing the arch, you should prepare following tools and materials that will be needed during the work:

  • tape measure for taking measurements;
  • a hacksaw for metal or a hacksaw for wood with fine teeth;
  • four clamps;
  • PVA glue;
  • carpenter's hammer;
  • level.

If an arch is installed without corner fillers, then you will need more tools and materials to complete the arch in doorway. Below I will tell you in more detail how this is done.

Assembly

First, let's look at how to assemble an MDF arch with corner fillings. This work conditionally divided into several main stages:

So, the work is done as follows:

  1. you need to start with an accurate measurement of the doorway. Moreover, measurements must be taken in several places;
  2. after unpacking the arch kit you need to glue the arches. To do this, the tongues are coated with glue, then inserted into the holes of one of the parts, and after that the second part is joined. For reliability, you can coat the ends of the parts with glue.
    It should be noted that if necessary, the arch can be expanded. For this purpose, the kit includes special additional elements that are installed between the two halves of each vault;
  3. Next, you need to glue the cornices to the arches using the same principle.;
  4. then you need to adjust the filling plates to the depth of the opening, i.e. wall thickness. It should be taken into account that the thickness of the plates should be 10-12 mm greater than the depth of the opening so that they can fit into the grooves of the arches and platbands.
    To cut the plates, you need to mark each of them in the form of points along which a straight line is drawn. You need to carefully cut the plates using a hacksaw. You can use one of the plates as a guide, which should be fixed on the part to be cut with clamps.
    In this case, the cutting line will be smooth, and, accordingly, you will not spoil the filling;

  1. the shortest plate from the set, which serves as a filler between the arches, must be cut to length. Moreover, you need to mark it so that it fits into the eaves to the middle.
    To mark the plate, it must be inserted into one of the arches. Trimming should be done according to the scheme described above;
  2. after this you need to assemble the vaults and the plate between them in single design . To do this, you need to coat the grooves of one of the arches with glue. Then the prepared plate is inserted into the grooves, and it is centered so that its edges enter the cornices to the same depth.
    Next, using the same principle, the plate is connected to the second arch. The result will be an assembled arch. It must be said that assembly can be done directly at the assembly site, as shown in the photo above, however, this is less convenient;
  3. Now finished arch needs to be installed in a doorway. You can attach it with “liquid nails” glue. To do this, the back side of the arches must be coated with glue, after which the arch should be aligned horizontally and pressed against the walls, tightening the arches with clamps.
    You can also use self-tapping screws. In this case, the arch is first leveled, then fixed with clamps, and after that the screws are screwed in;

  1. next you need to install cornice extensions. They should first be cut so that the length strictly corresponds to the depth of the opening. The ends of the planks need to be coated, then tighten the ends of the cornices, between which the extensions are located, with clamps;
  2. after this you need to cut the trim to length. It is more convenient to carry out the markings in place, the only thing is that the casing must first be turned over so that the sawn-off end is located at the bottom;
  3. then you need to cut the length of the panels that will be located between the trims. Their length should be slightly longer than the length of the platbands so that they can extend to the middle of the upper eaves;
  4. after this you need to install one of the platbands, connecting it to the upper cornice using dowels and glue;
  5. Next, you need to coat the groove on the back side of the casing with glue and insert the panel into it;

  1. on the other side of the wall, a second platband is installed using the same principle and connected to the filling. Both platbands need to be tightened with clamps;
  2. the second pair of trim and filling are installed in the same way;
  3. To complete the work, you need to install the lower decorative locks.

Advice!
If you are not sure that you can install the arch correctly, it is better to entrust this work to specialists.
The price of such a service is about 1,500 rubles.

This completes the arch assembly process. If the structure is finished, then no additional work no longer needed. An unpainted MDF arch requires more painting.

I must say that MDF painting is a rather complex procedure - several layers of special paint coating. Moreover, after applying the first layers, the surface is sanded, as a result of which the raised wood fibers are rubbed away.

As for installing an arch without corner fillings, the procedure is performed in exactly the same way. The only thing, as mentioned above, is that you first need to prepare the window opening.

You can do this in two ways:

  • cut carefully top part partitions in the shape of an arch, and then plaster;

  • build an arch using a frame and drywall.

After this, the entire wall must be puttied and finished. On our portal you can find detailed information about how to install drywall and finish walls.
