How to choose which pot is needed for geraniums? We choose the appropriate size, and also find out what this flower loves. How to choose the right pot for indoor plants? Flower pots: what are they

- an element of the interior, it doesn’t always occur to us to think about this when equipping a house after repair, but if you match flower pots to both the interior and the color of indoor plants, you will see that flower pots can very well support the primary colors your interior and re-arrange the accents.

This article is about how to choose flower pots to enhance the beauty of your interior and houseplants.

Interior element

I would like to start with this wonderful example. See how the pots fit well into the interior. The yellow carpet is supported by a) yellow daffodils on the dining table b) yellow pots on the windowsill. At the same time, yellow daffodils are placed in white pots so that the rhyme is not too intrusive.

Another example of excellent selection in the interior. In the photo above - the interior is in a classic style, to which the flower pots are matched in the same style, and the floor is more elaborate, and the smaller one is more concise.

Also pay attention to the selection of indoor plants themselves for this flirty interior. The plant on the floor is large, but has the same graceful shape as everything around, and on the table lives an orchid, an exquisite and whimsical houseplant, perfectly suited to the feminine character of the interior.

So, in order to beautifully fit flower pots into the interior, we have two simple rules:

  • flower pots with their color should support some element of the interior;
  • must match the style of the interior

In the photo above you see an excellent example of such a selection - two palm trees in glossy black and white modern streamlined pots fit perfectly into a modern achromatic interior.
Everything is very harmonious.

pot shape

Here is another simple rule that is well illustrated by the photo above:

- if several identical flowers are in a row, then you need to use flower pots of the same shape for them

At the same time, as you can see, they can be of different colors, but all colors must be combined with each other, as in the photo above and in the photo below.

Flower pots come in a simple shape and neutral colors, and are bright and unusual. When choosing an accessory for a flower, be guided by the following rules.

It is advisable not to leave a flower pot of an unusual shape or bright colors alone - it will look like it accidentally fell into the interior. Use two or three.

Bright and unusual flower pots look better in the interior when there are two or three of them..

Bright ones look better when there are several of them, but at least two. In the photo on the right you see a good example - three elements in the Gzhel color stand in a row, and three identical callas are planted in them, blooming in different colors. It even looks beautiful in the photo, but even better in real life.

Design Rules

So - if you have the same plants and you intend to put them in a row, then your actions can be as follows:

  • choose for them flower pots of the same shape and the same color;
  • choose for them flower pots of the same shape and different, but always matching colors (best of all from one color palette);
  • put them in the same bright or unusual flower pots.

With this design of indoor plants, they will not only look good on their own, but will also become a stylish accent in the interior, a small touch that will work on the overall impression of harmony.

Bright flower pots have another feature that you need to consider. It is desirable that the color is not brighter than the color of the houseplant.. That is, if the plant is flowering, then its flowers should not be dimmer than the color of the base, and if the plant is not flowering, then the leaves.

In the photo above - an unsuccessful example of selection. Here, a bright color "interrupts" the beautiful soft color of the flowers, does not help this beauty to manifest itself, but drowns it out.

In the photo below, more successful examples - plants with a similar color of flowers are placed in soft pots, and they look better.

However, this by no means means that bright flower pots cannot be picked up for bright plants. On the contrary, it can shade a bright flower very favorably, you just need to carefully choose the colors.

The combination of the color of the pot and plant

One of the best partners for hot pink, crimson, coral, cyclamen, fuchsia is bright blue or bright blue.

Almost all bright colors are suitable for red and yellow flowers, as you can see in the photo above - the accessories have a very bright color, but they go well with bright flowers, it turns out a very cheerful picture. Please note, however, that the main background was prudently left neutral so as not to make the picture too bright - I will talk about this in more detail below.

Above, I said that almost all bright flower pots are suitable for red and yellow flowers. Almost because red flowers do not suit poison green and grass green- oddly enough, but the dense green color of the grass, which would seem to be organic for any plants, definitely conflicts with the bright red color, in addition, it is difficult to match it with the greenery of a particular flower. In the photo above, you see a good anti-example - the bright green color "clogs" both the dark green color of the foliage and the red color of the flowers.

When choosing a flower pot for your houseplant, make sure that its brightness does not overshadow the color of the plant's flowers. If it is too bright and colorful, as in the photo, then even bright flowers will not be able to compete with it and as a result will look too faded and sad.

In the photo you see an eloquent anti-example - the clover-pink color of the flowers definitely loses to the flashy colors of the pot, but it was worth making it a little less bright, and the picture would be much more fun.

All plants look great in neutral flower pots.- white, gray, terracotta, brown, chocolate, khaki, sand. If you do not know what color they should be chosen for your interior, then feel free to take one of these colors.

chocolate color

If it’s hard for you to choose from this list, then take either chocolate or white.

Chocolate flower pots go with almost any interior and all indoor plants.

Universal white

Sometimes the chocolate color is not suitable, then take it white flower pots - they are absolutely versatile, suitable for all indoor plants and all flowers.

Various types of interior

Follow only the form - it should match the style of your interior, as you can see in the photo above and in the photo below. Interior with country motifs, Provence, coastal style, cottage style flower pots of traditional shape and in the form of jugs are well suited, modern interiors are concise, angular or streamlined. Exquisite interiors in retro style and shabby chic- perforated with imitation of lace and cutwork. Classic interiors - classic forms.

Maintaining any color of your interior is always good. An interesting example in the photo is a photo wallpaper with the image of roses, on their background there are identical roses in identical flower pots that support the main colors of the photo wallpaper. Please note that everything is done exactly according to the rules that I wrote about above.

The final picture looks somewhat, for my taste, cloying, but if the owners like it, then ok. At least in terms of design, there is nothing to complain about.

Two good examples of rhyming with interior elements are in the photo below.

The golden terracotta flower pots in the photo on the left support the embroidery on the pillow, and the red color of the flowers rhymes with the color of the table and tile. In the photo on the right, the dark red color of the pots supports the color of the pillows.

Matching shape and size

When choosing a flower pot, also pay attention to matching its shape and size to the shape and size of the flower. Flowers growing with “grass” (calendula, carnations, marigolds, etc.) look good in oblong low ones, as in the photo. Flowers growing in a "bush" (petunias, kalanchoe, roses, begonias, etc.) - in traditional pots. Flowers growing with an “arrow” (orchids, callas) - in flower pots of stable squat forms, cubic ones are especially good. Compare two pictures:

A flower pot of a traditional shape is not very suitable for an arrow-shaped orchid - the picture loses its stability, it seems that the orchid is about to fall. In the photo on the right, the arrow-shaped flower grows in a squat flower pot, and the picture looks very harmonious and elegant.

In size, they correspond to the visible part of the flower - not very beautiful when the pot is much smaller or much larger than the flower. You can see a common mistake in the photo on the right - here small Kalanchoes are planted in large flower pots, much larger than them. Everything seems to be fine - and the color rhymes with flowers and sofa cushions, and the same plants stand in a row in the same pots, but due to the fact that they are too large, some absurdity appears in the final picture.

Unusual flower pots

Well, at the end of the article I will amuse you a little. Pots now come in so many different types and shapes that, perhaps, a separate review will have to be written about unusual flower pots. They are luminous LED, electronic, combined with a radio and just funny.

Flowers in the house are wonderful. For a long time I have been breeding various types of flowers, and, analyzing the optimal conditions and their habitat, I concluded that choosing the right pot plays an important role.

Choose: ceramic or plastic

When you go to a hardware or flower shop, the variety of pots is striking in its quantity. At first glance, I want to get a beautiful, stylish, complementary decor, pot. And here, manufacturers delight, offer pots made of metal, ceramics, plastic, glass. Each of these species has its own characteristics and is intended for a specific type of indoor plants.

1. Plastic.
I must say right away that I prefer this particular type, because they are inexpensive and you can always choose the desired color, shape. Moreover, I am engaged in planting a large number of flowers, so I can buy up to 50 pots at a time.

Plastic pots are easy to use, they are good for transplanting plants, while the risk of damaging the root system remains minimal.

Plastic pots today can be not only colored, but also transparent, which makes it possible to solve the problem of transplanting orchids.

But such pots also have their drawbacks. Very often they are knocked over by children, as the plastic form is not stable on the surface. Such pots are not recommended for flowers that require evaporation of moisture through the root system. The structure of the plastic does not allow moisture to evaporate below, which leads to stagnation of water.

In my flowers, I solve this problem quite simply, using professional peat and perlite for planting. These components prevent rotting of the root system.

2. Ceramics.

Such pots always amaze with their beauty, but their price is also not cheap. Choosing a ceramic pot for your flower, you can always add a stylish twist to your interior.
The most basic advantage of such a pot is its porous structure. It allows the root system to breathe freely, moisture to penetrate inside and evenly distributed over the substrate.

I rarely use ceramic pots, because it is difficult to make large plants in them, while its transportation or movement around the apartment becomes problematic due to the large weight.

Ceramic pots must be disinfected when reused, as diseases are perfectly preserved and live on such surfaces.

What pots are best to use in your home

From my experience, I want to offer some practical tips for choosing a pot for your home.

1. Choosing a pot should begin with determining the type, shape and color scheme. You can not use pots that will be their design forms, colors overshadow the beauty of the flower. A pot is just a container, and a flower is a decoration for a room.

2. The best shapes for any flower are round pots. Of these, it is easy to transplant the plant, while damage to the root system is minimized.

4. Be sure to have a saucer or tray for watering in the pot. A lot of home flowers require irrigation of the root system. The presence of a pallet helps to avoid rotting or mold.

5. If you need to choose a pot for transplanting, then its diameter should be a couple of centimeters larger than the previous one.

6. If it is necessary to plant a plant and divide it into parts, then the diameter of the pots should be 2-3 centimeters less than the previous one.

7. If you need to propagate the plant with children or seat children, then I do not recommend buying pots at all. For this method, small plastic cups are suitable. To make the plant feel comfortable in them, you need to cut several holes in the bottom for the passage of water.

8. For violets, it is better to use cone-shaped pots. They allow the rosette of the plant to form correctly, the leaves of the flower in such plants will be lush, and the flower cap will spread freely over the entire surface.

9. When choosing a pot for a large plant, you must consider its height. The pot should be 1/3 - ¼ of the height of the plant. If the flower will have a large crown in the future, then the pot should be wide.

10. When choosing ceramic pots, you need to pay attention to the inside. It must be covered with glaze without fail.

If you decide to breed indoor plants or there was a need to transplant plants - you will need a new flower pot.

Let's take a closer look: how to choose the right flower pot, what material is better, with or without a drainage hole, what is a planter and why they are needed.

So you have purchased a houseplant or just the plants have grown up and it has become cramped in an old pot, you need to transplant. Especially purchased indoor flowers are often sold in shipping containers, transplanting into a new pot just needed.

Flower pot sizes

Decide on the selection of the size of the flower pot. If the plants are tall and mature with massive leaves, they will need a large pot (eg monstera, ficus, clerodendrum).

Plants such as violets, gloxinia, pelargonium and the like are better suited small flower pots.

Pay attention to the diameter and height of the pot. The height of the flower pot should be at least 1/3 of the height the plant itself.

The diameter of the pot is selected as follows: the wider the crown of the plant, the wider the diameter of the flower pot. For plants with a height of 30 cm or more, a pot with a diameter of 20 cm or more is suitable. The ideal proportions of the pot are obtained when when the diameter is 2/3 of its height.

When you choose a pot for very tall plants, such as common myrtle, pay attention to the diameter of the base, it should be at least 1/3 of the height of the plant.

Plants feel especially comfortable in clay and ceramic pots. One of the disadvantages of such a pot is fragility. It may break if dropped, so be careful. When reusing such pots, they must be disinfected.

For large plants standing on the floor, buy a plastic pot, it is much lighter than ceramic and it will be easier to move the plant.

The most practical and relatively cheap. Today in stores there is a huge selection of plastic flower pots.

Video - Flower Pots

If you have to transplant with dividing the bush of the plant, you will need several small pots.

When transplanting adult plants, choose a pot 1.5-2 cm larger than the old pot. When transplanting plants, a new earth mixture is partially added.

When transplanting a young plant that continues to grow, you will need a pot 3 cm larger than the previous one.

When transplanting fast-growing or large plants, and when the next transplant occurs in 2-3 years, pick up a pot 4 cm bigger than the old one.

If you have old flower pots in stock and you want to use them, then they must be disinfected, then dried. Chlorine-containing agents are suitable for disinfection.

Flower pots for growing plants must be with drainage holes to drain excess water.

But there are pots that serve as decorative pots, without drainage holes. The main disadvantage of planters is the accumulation of excess water at the bottom after watering, which leads to rotting of the roots, the development of various diseases.

If you purchased a pot without a hole, using a drill you can carefully drill it. In a pot for every 10 cm 2 volume, there should be one hole.

Such pots perform a decorative function. Cache-pots are made from various materials: ceramics, plastic, wood.

Often flower pots with plants are placed in a cache-pot. Planters give an interesting aesthetic appearance to the interior, but excess water must be drained every time after watering.

Moss can be placed between the walls of the cache-pot and the pot, which will absorb excess water after watering, gradually evaporating moisture. If you will use pots, as a way to increase humidity, you need to choose a size 3-4 cm wider than the pot that will stand inside.

A lot depends on the choice of pots: often plants develop poorly and even get sick from sitting in unsuitable pots. The most suitable pots for plants are those in which the width at the top is equal to the height, and the bottom is not too narrow. The walls should be even, not thick, without depressions that could prevent the lump from being knocked out of the pot. An essential requirement is the porosity of the material so that the walls and bottom of the pot are breathable. Most of all, pots made of well-fired clay satisfy this purpose.

A porous pot, when soaked with water, immediately absorbs it, which can be used as a guide to distinguish porous pots from non-porous similar in appearance. The bottom should be flat or sloping towards the middle, so that the drain hole falls on its lowest part. If it is on a hillock or with edges wrapped inside the pot, then you should either make another hole or expand the existing one. In general, looking at the pot, the drain hole should not be less than 1.3-2.5 cm in diameter. In very large pots, several drainage holes should be made, and the middle one is best covered not with a shard (which should be porous and turned upside down), but with a tiny pot turned upside down.

Non-porous pots, made of metal, porcelain, pressed paper, dense clay, as well as glazed (polished, etched), are suitable for the successful cultivation of plants in them only if their width significantly exceeds their height, such as, for example, hanging pots or amply, used for creeping, hanging from the edges of plants. If, however, they want to have porcelain pots to decorate rooms, then plants are not planted in them, but simple porous pots are placed in them. Finally, it is very important that the pots are always kept clean, free of dirt and mold, otherwise their pores become clogged and the walls of the pot become airtight.

It is also important that the bottom of the pot does not come into direct contact with the saucer, otherwise the bottom layer of the earth sours and deteriorates from the water flowing onto the saucer after watering. To avoid this, put 2-3 high flat stones on the saucer, on the edges of which the pot is placed; at the same time, such a device allows free flow of air to the lower layer of the earth, which has a very beneficial effect on the plant itself.

Which flower pots are better: plastic or ceramic

A popular question: which pots for indoor flowers are better - clay or plastic (plastic)? It is safe to say that both have their advantages and disadvantages.

The service life of pots made of plastic (plastic) is practically unlimited, they rarely break and have all sorts of colors that allow them to fit into various interiors. But plastic tends to overheat at high temperatures, and the root system can suffer from overheating of the substrate.

Fired clay pots break when they fall, do not always match in color, and the moisture from them evaporates quickly. But ceramics, unlike plastic pots and flowerpots, with sufficient thickness does not overheat in the hot sun, air exchange with the environment takes place through clay. Clay pots covered with glaze are an exception.

clay pots

Ceramic ware is rightfully the most popular, as it is an excellent container for almost all types of plants. The proportions of the pots are as follows: the height is equal to the top diameter, and the base diameter is 2/3 of the top diameter. This shape ideally allows gas exchange through the expanded top and water runoff during irrigation. The undoubted advantages of this type of dishes are porosity and breathability. Through the ceramic walls, air enters the soil, which is necessary for the breathing of the roots, so you should not wrap the pots with foil or paper, and even more so paint them with oil paint.

The disadvantage of clay pots is the possibility of hypothermia of the soil, which can occur due to intensive evaporation of water through the pores of ceramics. In plants that are demanding on soil temperature, this can adversely affect the root system.

New clay pots are recommended to be lowered into water for 1-2 hours before planting. As a result, gases and harmful salts, which are formed during firing, are removed from the pores. If the pot has already been in use, it must be washed with soap and water using a stiff brush, and then, after boiling with soda, rinse with water.

Glazed ceramic pots

Such containers are airtight due to the glaze, so plants cannot be planted in them. They can only be used as decorative outdoor pots where the main flower containers are placed.

Plants are planted in ceramic vats and vessels for which ceramic pots are not suitable. It is necessary that they have a sufficient drainage layer at the bottom, which can absorb excess water. Drainage is prepared from expanded clay, broken bricks or ceramic shards. It is recommended to isolate the soil from the inner wall of the ceramic vessel with a film, as the glaze releases substances harmful to plant growth.

Clay bowls, bowls

These shallow containers (their diameter is greater than the height) have all the advantages of simple clay pots. They can be recommended for growing ferns, bromeliads, as well as for rooting cuttings and sowing seeds.

Plant compositions look good in them. Due to the shallow depth and large surface area of the bowl, evaporation is more intense here than in a pot, so the likelihood of root rot with excessive watering is reduced. Groups of succulents look spectacular in clay bowls.

Styrofoam pots

Polyfoam has high thermal insulation properties, which is undoubtedly an advantage. However, such pots are rarely used, as they are unstable and easily turned over, especially when the plant reaches a large size.

plastic pots

Plastic pots are often used by indoor plant lovers. They are lightweight, durable and have a variety of designs, which allows them to be used in any interior.

Unlike ceramic pots, they are not porous, so there is no danger of the roots getting cold as a result of moisture evaporation. The ability to retain water in plastic dishes is very high. This should be taken into account when watering.

Plants with very sensitive roots should not be planted in plastic pots.

Sometimes the plastic bowl seems to contain substances that inhibit root growth.

New plastic pots should be thoroughly washed with hot, soapy water before planting.

Saucers

These are bowls or saucers that are substituted under pots with indoor plants to drain excess water. On sale there are many decorative saucers made of ceramics or plastic.

Containers

Can be made from plastic. It is important that they have a hole for water flow and drainage. In such containers, plants can be planted directly into the soil of a greenhouse or winter garden. Sometimes the container is filled with peat or expanded clay, and pots with plants are immersed in them.

Cooper's utensils

Wooden barrels can be used without restrictions. The risk of harm to plants is minimal here. A drainage layer must be placed at the bottom of the vessel. To protect wooden walls from decay, they can be insulated with foil or burned with a blowtorch.

Lattice baskets made of wood

Such containers are especially good for growing ferns, bromeliads and other epiphytes. The bottom slats of the basket are covered with a thin layer of foam. The spaces between the side planks are filled with swamp moss to prevent the earth from falling out. In such baskets, the soil dries out faster than in other vessels, so the plants in them should be watered more often and more abundantly.

Many plants thrive in aquariums specially prepared for their cultivation. The microclimate formed in them is favorable for pets with increased requirements for air humidity. This is especially important in rooms with central heating.

Delicate tropical plants and various succulents thrive in glass containers. You can place such mini-greenhouses with plants not only at the window. Having placed flowers in the back of the room, you should take care of additional lighting with fluorescent lamps. Such aquariums with green compositions will decorate any corner in an apartment or office.

planter

Wall or hanging vases - planters - are light decorative elements. They consist of a container for a small flower pot (or a plastic bag with a clod of earth) and a protective surface adjacent to the wall, which protects the wall from damage during watering. Such flowerpots are hung on cords of various lengths and are used to decorate arches, window and door openings, niches, etc. The shape of the cache-pot, as well as the material for their manufacture, can be very diverse, which gives great opportunities for the creative imagination of the designer.

For ferns and ampelous plants, you can use hanging containers made of ceramics or plastic, but it is interesting to make a planter with your own hands in the form of a hanging basket. The ends of round sticks 20-25 cm long (according to the size of the pot) are drilled at the ends. Next, the sticks are stacked in the form of a "log". A soft wire or a thick fishing line is passed through the holes. From below, the ends of the connecting material are fixed with beads or cord tassels. The bottom of the planter is made of rot-resistant materials: plastic or birch bark. A dense plastic bag with holes for air penetration is inserted into this basket. A tray with pieces of charcoal is placed at the bottom of the bag, which actively absorbs moisture during irrigation, and then gives it to the substrate. Next, the bag is filled with nutrient soil, the composition of which meets the requirements of the planted plant.

When choosing a pot, it is important to remember

    • The walls of the pot should be even, without depressions and recesses, this will interfere with planting and transplanting.
    • Be sure to have a drainage hole or the ability to make it yourself without damaging the pot. Large pots should have several drainage holes.
    • There must be a pallet. Sometimes it has to be purchased separately. Pallets in the form of a disk or with low sides are very inconvenient.
    • The shape and volume of the pot is selected individually for each specific plant (depending on the size and shape of the root system).

If you decide to start breeding indoor plants, then in addition to choosing a plant, you will immediately have a choice of a flower pot and, possibly, a flower pot. How to choose the right size flower pots, why you need flower pots will be discussed in this article.

Immediately after purchasing a new plant, you will need to transplant that plant into a new flower pot. Those containers in which plants are sold are just containers for transportation.

Yes, and the soil needs to be changed, because instead of the soil needed for this plant, the container contains, most likely, high-moor peat. It dries very quickly, becomes corky and does not retain water. You can often hear: there was a flower in the store, so beautiful, but for some reason it disappeared at home. Therefore, in order not to start immediately with mistakes, buy a flower pot for your pet.

Almost all indoor plants feel great in small flower pots. Before you go to the store for a flower pot, decide on the choice of a houseplant.

If the plant is old enough and tall, for example, like indoor maple, clerodendrum, or it has large massive leaves, like monstera, some types of ficus, in this case you will need large flower pots. And indoor plants such as peperomia, saintpaulia, pelargoniums, gloxinia and many, many other small plants with lush foliage feel much better in small flower pots.

When choosing a flower pot, you need to pay attention to its height and diameter. If you choose a flower pot according to the height of the plant. It is this parameter that you need to pay attention to when choosing a pot for alocasia or zamiokulkas. Your choice will be correct if the height of the flower pot is one third or a quarter of the height of the plant. If the plant is tall, about 1 meter, then the height of the pot for it should be at least one third of the height of the plant.

If, when choosing a flower pot, you are guided by the diameter, then you should know that the wider the crown of a houseplant, the wider the pot should be. For example, a pot with a diameter of about 20 cm is suitable for plants with a height of 30 cm to one meter. The ideal flower pot maintains proportion: the diameter of the pot is 2/3 of its height, this must be remembered when choosing a pot for Elwoodi cypress. When choosing a pot for a tall plant with a wide spreading crown, such as an adult common myrtle, pay attention to the diameter of the base: it should be at least one third of the height of the plant.

What material should flower pots be made of?

Probably the most ecological - clay and ceramic flower pots. Plants are very comfortable in them, especially home rose. However, they are quite fragile, with one careless movement the pot will fall and break. Also, when reusing a clay or ceramic flower pot, disinfection is needed, and preferably soaking for a day or two in a disinfectant solution containing chlorine.

If the plant is very large and stands on the floor, then you should not buy a ceramic pot for it, but it is better to use a plastic one. After all, it is much lighter than ceramic, and therefore it will be easier for you to move it.

In addition to the decorative function, the pots can also perform others: for example, if the air temperature in the room is +25 ° C and higher, excess water from the pots can evaporate themselves, increasing the humidity of the air and thereby preserving the decorative appearance of the plant. Therefore, planters can be used to increase air humidity in winter. It is good to put moss between the walls of the pot and the planter. It immediately absorbs excess water after watering, and then gradually evaporates moisture. If you are using a pot to increase humidity, then the diameter of the pot should be 3-4 cm wider than the diameter of the pot.

If the plant is tall, with a spreading crown, then the pots need to be chosen large enough and stable, with a wide base. For additional stability of tall or climbing plants, a decorative support can be installed in the space between the walls of the pot and the planter, while the root system of the plants does not suffer at all.

The cache-pot is able to completely transform the interior of the room, set a certain tone, and also collect all indoor plants into a single ensemble.

How to choose a pot?

- classic strict flower pots in neutral or pastel colors, which can not only emphasize the beauty of plants, but also make you forget about all the tricks that we resort to for successful growth and flowering.

- bright original pots, able to push plants into the background. However, when creating compositions from ornamental non-flowering plants, bright planters can dilute a solid green mass.

- plain flower pots will bring a certain style to your interior, help to avoid a cacophony of color. But you also need to remember that a strict selection of pots in one color can be monotonous and boring.
