Modern fireplace surround. We make a fireplace lining with artificial and natural stone How to beautifully decorate a fireplace

The fireplace in a country house looks elegant and chic. If it is made professionally, it will provide not only a decorative function, but also reliably warm the room. When designing, it is important to create beautiful decor, which will successfully fit into the interior of the room and will last for many years. The decoration of the fireplace for several centuries in a row was made of clay refractory brick. Now other materials are also used, which, in terms of their coefficient of thermal expansion and resistance to high temperatures, are close to brickwork.

The fireplace is tiled with baked clay, porcelain stoneware, natural or artificial stone. These materials withstand high temperatures, are protected from harmful effects moisture and soot. Finishing a fireplace with a decorative stone is good for the following advantages:

Compared to decorative tiles, gypsum or porcelain stoneware, natural stones can cost significantly more. If they have uneven edges, then the installation of the fireplace wall will be more time consuming than laying even rectangular fragments, the weight of the buta is also considerable. But as a result of the work carried out, you can create a magnificent fireplace in a noble classical style.

Types and devices of fireplaces

According to their design and location in the interior, fireplaces are divided into 4 types:

  • Wall-mounted - located near the wall of the room, mainly in its center. Such models are usually the largest, designed for heating large rooms. The wall fireplace is the dominant feature in the interior and immediately catches the eye. Around it you can place several chairs and relax with the whole family.

  • The corner fireplace is mounted in the corner of the room and is usually inferior in size to the wall one, so less material will be needed to finish it. But such a construction creates quite cozy atmosphere and will allow you to settle down around a small company.

  • The built-in fireplace has a firebox and a chimney in the wall masonry, therefore it requires a minimum of materials for cladding. Usually it protrudes outward to a thickness of no more than half a brick, and the dimensions do not exceed 70 x 80 cm. As its finish, you can use the material with which the wall is lined.

  • The island fireplace does not adjoin the walls of the room in any way, it is open on all sides, looks like a pool with small sides, inside of which there is a firebox. To remove smoke, a suspended hood is installed above it. Finishing such a fireplace is required only for the side walls, so you need a very small amount of decorative stones.

A wall or corner fireplace has the following elements:

  • firebox where firewood is burned;
  • smoke collector for smooth transition smoke into the chimney;
  • portal, usually U-shaped- this is the facade of the fireplace, decorated with decor;
  • a chimney that brings smoke out and provides draft, which is also lined with decorative stones.

Thus, finishing is needed only for two parts of the fireplace - the portal and the chimney. But many variations of these home ovens may contain additional elements: compartments for firewood or decorative shelves for small items.

materials

As a natural stone for finishing the fireplace, rubble, limestone, granite, marble, shell rock are used. Booth is called fragments of sandstone rocks weighing no more than 50 kg, but in the case of a fireplace facade, it is optimal to take pieces of 15 - 45 cm each, which weigh no more than 10 kg. In construction work, this material has been used since ancient times, and its main advantages are its excellent strength and availability. Booth, like a footstone, is found almost everywhere, therefore it does not have a high cost, and lined with it architectural elements look very presentable.

Due to its uneven shapes and dimensions, it is difficult to build an even wall from rubble - you should select elements that do not protrude, combined with each other. Irregularities between the stones are compensated by the solution binding them. This is the usual mixture of cement and sand.

AT last years for finishing fireplaces, not natural, but artificial rubble is increasingly being used. Its advantages are that it is lighter than natural, you do not need to look for pasture material or buy raw materials in a store, you can make more even fragments for your needs. It can be made at home in figured forms from dry mixes based on silicone and pigments. You can make the basis for the solution yourself, but gypsum powder as a binder will not work, since it can collapse with a temperature difference. It is best to use traditional cement as a gluing component.

White limestone for facing the fireplace is good because it has high refractory properties and strength, does not expand or deform when heated. It is lighter than natural buta, easier to process and install on a horizontal surface. A pleasant white shade stone will create a bright and cozy atmosphere in the room. Limestone has another remarkable property - over the years it becomes stronger and stronger.

Marble has beautiful textures with veins and a variety of colors. Many prefer when arranging country fireplace use this particular material, as it gives the interior a luxurious look. Marble slabs have high strength and heat capacity, thanks to processing, details of any shape can be obtained. But the cutting, grinding and installation of this mineral itself is very laborious, the raw materials are expensive, so a fireplace with marble portal will cost the family a lot.

Natural granite, unlike marble, has a heterogeneous structure of many inclusions with different physical properties. Therefore, at large temperature differences, cracks and deformations may appear in its structure. But expensive and high-quality varieties of this stone, mined at great depths, withstand temperatures up to 600 ° C, which for home fireplace quite enough.

Shell rock for finishing the fireplace should be used because of the ease of processing and installation, strength and good hygroscopicity. It absorbs the surrounding moisture and then gradually brings it out. Its structure has many small air pores, the more of them, the stronger the stone. When facing a fireplace, a shell rock is preferable, as it always has warm colors and original patterns created by nature.

Among the artificial stones for decorating the facade of the fireplace, the most popular is acrylic. It is made on the basis of chemical components with the addition of marble, granite or silicate chips, crushed stone and other components. Dyes allow making for acrylic boards various colors. Due to holding in special forms fragments have flat surface and are easily attached to cement glue. Acrylic does not absorb dust and dirt, is easily cleaned with rags, and does not emit harmful substances at high temperatures.

The second popular artificial material is quartz. It has all the advantages that acrylic stone, but has a lower cost. Quartz slabs can be of various light and dark colors, opaque or translucent. For a variety of textures, crumbs of marble, granite or quartzite can be added to them.

Finish options

Worth Considering good example corner fireplace built from several types of natural stone. The lower part with a recess for firewood is made of large rubble of various dark colors on cement mortar. The portal with the firebox and the chimney are lined with pleasant flat limestone. beige colour. All in all, this finish gives the fireplace a very pretty rustic look that can blend in nicely with a country house interior.

The hearth decorates any house. It is always nice to wrap yourself in a blanket, sitting in front of your fireplace, and enjoy the flashes of the flames of the hearth.

AT modern interior increasingly established decorative fireplaces stone, using artificial materials to simplify finishing work. After all, the use of natural stone obliges to create a foundation for the structure and carry out complex construction manipulations.

In this article, you will learn about the advantages of artificial stones, read the recommendations for right choice material and get all the information you need to finish the fireplace with my own hands. In the photographs you can clearly see the varieties of decorative stone finishes and finished lined fireplaces.

Advantages of decorative stones

Artificial stones are used for finishing electric and wood-burning fireplaces, gas structures, biofireplaces and fireplace stoves. Due to the achievement of maximum similarity of designs, the decoration of the fireplace with decorative stone complements general style interior.

Such facing stones have a number of advantages:

  • high refractory performance;
  • retain their natural color for a long time appearance.
  • convenience when decorating due to the lightness of the material;
  • a variety of colors and textures allow you to select stones for fireplaces in the right style;
  • low cost compared to natural stone;
  • simplicity self use, convenient cutting and stacking;
  • does not emit harmful odors, as it refers to environmentally friendly materials, does not contain impurities and toxic reagents.

Artificial stone is made from cement with the addition of expanded clay, pumice or fillers. Dyes are added to give the necessary colors to the material.

  • Thanks to these technologies, artificial stones weigh about half as much as natural ones.
  • At low cost external texture material differs little from natural stones sometimes it is difficult to distinguish them from each other.
  • The appearance of the material repeats the natural shape of the cobblestones. They come in the form of chipped, sawn rubble stones.

By individual orders customers are made perfectly unusual shapes and colors.

To clad a stone fireplace with your own hands, you need to purchase the appropriate materials.

Choosing a decorative one from the whole variety, you should approach this issue creatively, decide in advance on the design style of your design. It is important to keep the following tips in mind:

  • Do not chase the goods of foreign firms. Most often Russian analogues have the best quality and at the same time have a low cost.
  • Finishing the fireplace with stone is done using heat-resistant products. Before purchasing finishing stones, consider the heat-resistant characteristics, depending on the type of hearth used. If you decide to use non-heat-resistant decorative stones for cladding, then toxic substances may be released when heated.
  • Familiarize yourself with the quality certificates for products, such documents will guarantee compliance with the specified parameters. If you are refused to provide certificates, this indicates the questionable quality of the product. It is possible that the production was carried out using harmful components.
  • Purchase material from well-known manufacturing companies that have been working for a long time and have established themselves in this industry.
  • Quality products on cardboard packaging have a brand logo and manufacturer's coordinates.
  • Before buying, pay attention to the appearance of the artificial stone, the presence of defects in the form of cracks or chips, as well as other signs of marriage, is unacceptable.
  • Pay attention to the date of manufacture of the stone, since the process of hardening of the material is carried out within a month after release. Only after this time the material acquires its strength.

In addition to decorative stones, you will need to stock up

  • heat-resistant glue;
  • water-repellent impregnations with protective properties;
  • grout;
  • a cleaner designed to remove cement residues from the surface;
  • specialized varnish for surface cladding, creating the effect of wet stone.

For lining the fireplace, a special adhesive composition is used. It must be selected taking into account the main surface: a high-quality connection can only be when the composition decorative stone matches the glue base.

  • For example, gypsum decorative stone is glued together with gypsum glue, and cement stone requires cement adhesive composition.

Moreover, if the main surface has depressions, then mastic is used. She can fill in all the imperfections with high quality.

Preparatory work before cladding

After selection facing material you can start preparatory work. For pre-training, decide on the surface on which you will lay the artificial stone.

  • These works can be carried out only at an air temperature of more than 5 0 C, since low temperatures affect the quality of bonding surfaces.

To prevent contamination of the elements, the stone should be faced from top to bottom. Thus, the work performed will have a neat and tidy appearance.

To cut artificial stone details, use a hacksaw with fine teeth, in which case the edge will be smooth and beautiful.

  • When used as a base wooden surface it is pre-coated with waterproofing.

If the fireplace is made of metal or concrete, waterproofing is not performed.

Please note! For severe irregularities in concrete or brick walls the fireplace must be plastered.

  • A plaster mesh is attached to the base with special fasteners.
  • Plaster is applied on top of the grid and the layer is completely dry.

If the thickness of the materials has discrepancies or the shape of the decorative stone has an uneven structure, then it is worth laying them in a chaotic manner. So overall composition will look natural and believable.

Required Tools

Before carrying out construction work, prepare the appropriate tool:

In addition to the tools indicated in the photo, it is desirable to have:

  • self-tapping screws or nails for mounting auxiliary materials;
  • spray gun or brush for wetting the surface of the base before applying the adhesive;
  • building trowels;
  • hammer ordinary and rubber;
  • grinder with a disk on a stone;
  • screwdriver and drill;
  • even wooden bars as guide racks;
  • a container in which the solution is stirred.

Stone cladding

Finishing the fireplace with a decorative stone is shown in the photo, we will analyze the main stages of facing work and focus on important nuances the process itself.

All base surface the fireplace portal is cleared. It is important to pay special attention to this, because the result of all work depends on the preparation of the foundation.

If the portal is brick, it is cleaned, removing excess mortar or uneven seams. With a sharp and durable metal object, make a recess in the seams between the bricks.

  • If the main surface is uneven, it is leveled with plaster or cement mortar, applying it to the grid.

Before finishing work, make a drawing and lay out all the details on the floor. Before dry laying, try on one row and check the configuration.

  • When using a tile that has an irregular shape, it is necessary to mark it from the wrong side, the numbers of neighboring parts are written on the edges.

It is important to know that the lined fireplace will turn out to be even if the finishing work begins with the strengthening of thick stones. They will become a guideline for applying glue under thin masonry details.

  • laying down stone tiles, take it from different boxes to evenly distribute the pattern, as they may differ in color and thickness from each other.

If possible, make seams between tiles of the same width so that the pattern matches in the future.

  • seamless masonry, tightly press all the details to each other.

Wanting to veneer "under the brick" or using details rectangular shape, keep the corners vertical. Closely control the connection of horizontal and vertical planes while maintaining a 90 degree angle.

  • To do this, you can use a special template on which the thickness of the seams and the intersection of perpendicular lines are marked.

The finishing process always starts from the bottom corner. After finishing the facing of the corner surface, they proceed to the upper horizontal row. Further, the main work is carried out, which is carried out from top to bottom.

  • After finishing work, you need to withstand at least a day until the glue dries completely, then you can proceed to rubbing the seams.

Important! Pre-check the quality of the grout on the cut of the decorative stone - whether it leaves marks on it.

After the surface of the entire structure has dried, it is treated with a special fire-resistant hydrophobic composition. Thus, a protective film is created that does not allow moisture to pass through and preserves the decorative stone during deformation or external impact on the fireplace. Dust is easily removed from such a surface. Also, the protective film preserves the structure of the artificial stone during temperature changes.

It is desirable to trim the front and side of the portal with a decorative stone. For the upper part, choose solid planes from ready-made slabs made of natural or artificial stone.

DIY decorative stones

With little experience in construction work, you can independently make facing stones required size and colors.

For this use Silicone forms, into which a solution of cement, sand and dyes is poured.

According to some technologies cement mixture replaced by alabaster. At the same time, all the constituent components are immediately mixed, diluted with water to the required consistency and poured into molds.

In the forms, the material must completely harden, only then can it be used to decorate the fireplace.

Finishing the fireplace with decorative stones is available for any person. At first glance, it seems that this is very difficult and time-consuming, although it is not. If something doesn't work out for you in the process, remember that you can always redo it.

The main thing is to choose the right parts and be creative in the process, following the recommendations. In this case, the fireplace will fill the beauty and charm of the hearth, while delighting your entire family for many years.

Fireplace finish natural stone looks much more spectacular than unpretentious brickwork. For lining the fireplace with stone with your own hands, you should learn how to choose the right material, prepare the base and carry out facing work. We will tell you about the main nuances and the order of work.

What stone to use for the fireplace

Despite the fact that the fireplace lining does not experience pronounced sudden changes temperatures, it is still located inside the living quarters. Because of this, it is necessary to completely eliminate even the slightest possibility harmful secretions, which means that sedimentary rocks like shale or sandstone should not be used.

From a radiological safety point of view, best solution will veneer the fireplace with granite stones. The main risk factor from the use of such materials in interior decoration is not associated with the natural radiation background of the rocks, but with the gases with which the stones are saturated and emit many times more intensively even with slight heating. The greatest danger is radon.

For lining the fireplace, it is recommended to purchase noble rocks of volcanic origin. In the most budget projects large pebbles and pebbles are used, it is also possible to use relief products made of concrete, that is, stones of artificial origin.

Basalt

Diabase

A truly magnificent look can be achieved using the same rocks that are used for bookmarking. sauna stove: basalt, diabase, jadeite. These rocks, even with strong heating, do not form harmful emissions and are completely safe. It is better to select stones yourself, a flat format is preferable different sizes mixed with equilateral pebbles of the same thickness, due to which I will fill the empty places of the layout. It is better to buy stones of medium polishing or generally raw.

Jadeite polished

jadeite chipped

Adhesive selection

If you are using dense hard rock without defects, the durability of the fireplace lining will depend entirely on the quality of the adhesive mixture and the reliability of its setting with the brick base. work in such temperature regime cement mortar he won’t be able to for a long time, so the choice narrows down to two options: buying a ready-made dry adhesive mixture for special purposes or preparing your own solution based on fireclay clay.

With ready-made compositions, everything is simple, in most cases the usual Ceresit ST-17 or Knauf "Marble" will be enough. You can also use more specialized mixes like Scanmix Fire. The main limitation in the use of this kind of glue is the maximum thickness of the seam, which is why the choice of masonry material is limited to artificial stone. Natural rock has an irregular shape, and it is possible to lay it on tile adhesive only after careful fitting.

Relative freedom in this regard is provided by homemade mortar: with it, stones can be laid without tedious grinding, which will give the fireplace a more authentic look. The composition of the solution includes chamotte clay, river or mountain sand and cement grade not lower than 300 in a dry weight ratio of 3:1:1. Clay must be wiped through a sieve in advance, rid of debris and inclusions, and then poured with water for 40-50 hours. After that, sand is added to the mixture, it is necessary to eliminate cracking on initial stage setting. Cement is necessary to accelerate setting and increase adhesion, it is added immediately before masonry. In such a solution, it will not be superfluous to use heat-resistant plasticizers. Final mixing should be done with a mixer or a drill with a tile adhesive attachment.

How to prepare the masonry surface

Third component quality cladding fireplace - a carefully prepared base. It is strictly necessary to prime the brickwork and the composition for this must be of the highest quality possible. It is recommended to use Knauf Tiefengrund or similar acrylate-based primers Dufa Putzgrung, Marshall Export Base, but mandatory for indoor use.

The second step is fixing the plaster mesh. The cell size must be chosen twice as large as the planned thickness of the adhesive joint. Attach the mesh with dowels plastic stoppers not possible, metal anchor wedges with a diameter of 6 mm should be used. Attachment points are located with a frequency of about 25-30 cm. It is necessary to attach it to the body of the brick, and not to the seam. To prevent the masonry from splitting, turn the hammer to a lower speed.

Additionally, you can “tear” the surface of the masonry by tapping it with a hammer and a chisel with the formation of many notches. This will significantly increase adhesion, but this can only be done at the initial stage before priming. At the end of the preparation, the surface must be carefully dedusted; it is also possible to open the masonry with another layer of primer from a manual spray gun.

Layout scheme

The entire lining of the fireplace, as a rule, can be divided into a number of flat sections. These include the front and side walls, it is also possible to expand the lower part to form a plinth. The fireplace shelf, as a rule, is not veneered in order to have an additional functional surface.

Flat sections must be displayed in the development scheme on A4 sheet and all key dimensions must be indicated. According to the resulting cutting, a mosaic of stones and their fragments is assembled on the floor, which are fitted to each other as tightly as possible. The seams between the elements of the cladding should not exceed 20-25 mm, in the best option it is recommended to adhere to values of 5-6 mm.

It is not very difficult to fit irregularly shaped stones closely, but at the same time it is quite problematic to maintain natural look faces. Majority rocks perfectly cut with a disc for angle grinder on concrete. You can give the edges chips and breaks with the help of a pickaxe; grinding disc, in the common people called "turtle".

Stones must be soaked in water before cutting and grinding. This will not only protect the workplace from dusting, but also allow you to visually see the finished result without color distortion from uneven refraction, and subsequently improve adhesion with the solution. The edges of each cut section should be left even with an overlap along the line of intersection of the planes of about 30-40 mm. It is very good if you can provide a corner dressing: where there are gaps on the edge of the flat section of the reamer, stones of a suitable shape from the adjacent plane will be inserted.

Cladding order

Facing always starts from the bottom of the front of the fireplace, on which the firebox is located. A shelf made of solid wood or artificial stone should already be fixed, the top row of stones will be brought out and adjusted under it. On the front part, when sorting, the most beautiful stones, tightly joined to each other and in harmony in shape and size.

Since the lifetime of the adhesive is quite high, it is recommended to first thoroughly wipe the entire surface, hammering the mortar under the mesh, and then add the mixture in small portions during the laying process. Planting stones is carried out on a continuous seam without voids, each element of the masonry has to be torn off several times to make sure that the glue has filled all the cavities.

When the front of the fireplace is lined, protruding elements may remain at the edges and in the mouth of the firebox. They will be removed after the mixture has dried, the easiest way is to carry out the final grinding with a disc disc. In the meantime, you should focus on facing the remaining planes. After the front, the sides of the fireplace are laid out, the lower zone is lined last.

Until the glue has dried, the seams should be embroidered. In the simplest version, the glue is simply wiped off with a finger, forming a semicircular hollow. It is also possible to scratch out the remaining adhesive with a scraper almost completely, they do not carry any payload. Instead of standard jointing, in this case, they wait for the final trimming and grinding of the protruding elements after they dry. Finally, a tinted glue mixture is blown into the gap between the stones using a confectionery syringe or a trash bag with a cut corner, which forms a convex seam with bizarre sagging.

How to lay out an arched vault

The greatest difficulty for amateurs is the lining of the semicircular vault of the firebox. To realize such an idea, it is required at the first stage of masonry before facing the front to lay out two wide columns in the lower corners of the opening. They should protrude above the common plane of the front part exactly as much as it is planned to make the protrusion of the arch.

Further, all the difficulties are reduced to correct selection stones. They should be wedge-shaped. It is also possible to compensate for circular masonry with a variable thickness of the seams, but this does not look as aesthetically pleasing as in a brick arch. To support the arch, as usual, formwork is constructed from a bent sheet of kragis.

Do not forget that the highlight of any arch is a large trapezoid-shaped cornerstone, set in the center of the upper part. It should be selected in advance from all source material, it should be the most beautiful element of the cladding. If you fit the stones carefully enough and laid the arch dry several times, it will hold even if the adhesive mixture cracks: the central stone will keep the tightly built vault from collapsing.

In country houses, fireplaces have always been very popular designs. In any case, any owner thought about building a fireplace in his room. Someone built a real one, someone is limited to a false version - this is already a matter of taste. Still, the days have already passed when, among other things, fireplaces performed an important function of heating the living space.

Each of the options looks great, very original, creates comfort in the room - and in general, a very soulful atmosphere - everyone will agree with this. That's why decorative trim fireplace - important aspect facing housing, you can not even argue with this.

What is the best way to decorate a fireplace today, what options are there? There are many materials, all of them are diverse. Let's talk about this topic in more detail - and you will definitely find something interesting for yourself.

Materials for the construction of fireplaces

Today you can build a fireplace in a country house using different materials - there are plenty of options. But even in simple city fireplaces there are such designs - this is quite normal.

So, in a private house for construction use:

  • gas blocks;
  • foam blocks;
  • Brick.

Such Construction Materials good for their fire resistance. They respond well even to very high temperatures - because of this they are chosen.

In a situation where the fireplace is built of brick, red material is recommended for use. It perfectly retains heat, outwardly looks more beautiful, aesthetically pleasing.

Also, in construction actively apply such solutions:

  • If there are no options, you can always use white brick. The decorative finish of the fireplace in this case can also be made of brick. Master can use brick different shades- there is nothing complicated in this. It’s just that certain coloring special substances are added to the concrete solution - the result is impressive;
  • When the structure is built from aerated concrete or foam blocks, it's time to think about how to finish the fireplace, because without special cladding it will not look good. in the best way. The materials are fine, they keep the heat perfectly, but aesthetically there is something to work on.

Please note: such materials are quite large - so if you make a mistake in the calculations, the fireplace can turn out to be very large. If this moment is critical, calculate everything in advance.
  • The master must also remember that fireplaces usually have a chimney. In case you are making a false design, this element is decorative, so anyone can do it. But if the fireplace is real, you won’t be able to do without a high-quality and working chimney. Removing combustion products is vital;
  • For the construction of the chimney, the same brick is used - this is the easiest. The design assumes the presence of a damper - so that enough air enters the fireplace - then the combustion process will be more productive, of high quality
  • Building fireplaces from natural stone is a costly task, but if you have the funds, this is a great option.

Especially, if you create in a country house real cabinet , hunter's room or hall.

Features of fireplace inserts (interior decoration)

If you are interested in what you can finish the fireplace with, you should also learn about something else: what is a firebox. By the fireplace is the place where solids burning - it can be firewood, coal or some other fuel. Decorative finishing of the fireplace also includes work with the firebox, but more on that below.

To finish this part of the design, apply today:

  1. Brick;
  2. Drywall sheets;
  3. The stone is natural.

Plasterboard cladding

  • You can indeed use sheets of drywall to sheathe a fireplace insert (after all, such material can even be - it is durable). But, only if the work is carried out with a false fireplace. However, exceptions to the rules are also allowed. Drywall may be necessary if it is necessary to level the surface in the firebox;
  • Only a special material can be used in works of this level - moisture-resistant drywall. Some other one is not recommended to be used here;
  • In the process of work, it is also worth paying attention - if such material is used, the volume of the furnace can be significantly reduced. This happens because the fastening of the sheets is performed on the frame (of course, metal). It is made from a special profile on the surface.

What is used for to fulfill installation work :

  • Need directly material;
  • Metal profile;
  • Screwdriver and screws.

Now for the installation details.:

  • In the course of work, some difficulties may arise - their probability is especially high when there are places in the fireplace that are difficult to access. That is why it is recommended to work with a screwdriver (a tool that functions with batteries);
  • The fireplace insert is usually sheathed with plasterboard when the size of the insert needs to be reduced - to a large extent. This happens when the fireplace has big size- and the owner wants to correct the situation;
  • If you decide to use sheets of such material, it is important to think over the interior decoration in advance - so that the material can be protected from destructive impact fire and high temperatures.

This will definitely help you.:

  • Decorative stone;
  • A natural stone;
  • Ceramic tiles (not often used, rather an exception).
When the fireplace insert is lined with drywall, there are usually no difficulties. First, they mount the material, then they start finishing work (here, too, only one's own strength is fully enough).

We use brick

Usually a brick is used in a situation where the fireplace itself is built from this material. The firebox in this situation is erected together with the rest of the structure; there is no need for additional decorative finishing.

In addition, a brick is chosen in the case when the entire fireplace structure was made of another material - which cannot cope with temperature effects in any way (or simply flammable, does not tolerate heat).

Such materials are:

  • Wood;
  • Drywall that is not fire resistant.

A chimney is laid out of brick, the firebox itself is inside the structure. And in order to ensure maximum safety, it is important to maintain a certain distance from the fireplace box to the facing brick layer. This interval should be at least 200 (and even better - 250) mm.

Facing with ceramic tiles

If the decorative finish of the fireplace is exactly what you are interested in, you cannot pass by such a wonderful material as ceramic tiles.

Generally, for interior decoration fireboxes are rarely used, they are fixed only on the surface that is flat (usually on drywall, we have already figured out above that its installation is not such a difficult task).

Execute installation ceramic tiles you can easily if you have:

  • Concrete mortar;
  • Two spatulas;
  • Myself finishing material;
  • Cross-shaped plastic beacons (needed so that the seam is even).

Features of the use of ceramic tiles:

  • The material is highly fire resistant. To perform the installation efficiently, it is best to use a special construction adhesive or concrete mortar.
To be beautiful, the distance between the tiles should be uniform. It is for this that it is worth using cruciform beacons - they are installed between the finishing elements. They are not expensive.
  • When the installation work on installing the tiles is completed, the seam is usually masked - for this there is a special decorative putty (it can be of different colors - you can easily find the one you want). In general, nothing complicated - while the result will be great.

Decorative exterior finishes for fireplaces

Since fireplaces can be both real and purely decorative (they work with the help of various electrical appliances), the finish options are drastically different. Of course, when the fireplace is just an imitation, there is a completely different approach to the facing process.

What kind materials for finishing fireplaces and stoves can be used? Here is the list:

  1. Glass;
  2. Wood;
  3. Marble;
  4. Porcelain stoneware;
  5. Drywall;
  6. Decorative stone;
  7. Ceramic tiles;
  8. The bassoon is decorative.

Marble and exterior cladding

  • Decorative fireplace trim with marble - expensive, but very nice solution, aesthetic. The design will acquire a really solid appearance - a great way for the owner to emphasize his high social position;
  • Today you can buy a fully finished facing for fireplaces - there is a demand, which means you can easily find an offer. Ordering the right size - this is also possible with professionals;
  • The master can use individual parts to assemble the cladding on his own.
Decorating a fireplace with marble is not the best simple task. This process is time-consuming, in addition, it is worth remembering many subtleties and trifles.

For example:

  • Marble weighs quite a lot. Because of this, its installation on the wall is impossible if the surface was previously sheathed with drywall. However, this rule does not apply to those decorative elements that are provided to the buyer already in a completely finished form;
  • It is customary to install such natural stone on a brick or some other surface. For this, a concrete solution with various additives is used, or a specialized adhesive.

What are the properties of marble? One can note such:

  • fire safety;
  • fire resistance;
  • Durability;
  • Strength.

It is also appropriate to add “practicality” here - but many masters will argue about this. The fact is that this finishing material has a very “capricious” surface. It reacts very poorly to the effects of certain detergents, which contain abrasive particles.

In addition, stains may appear on the marble surface over time - but only when the material has been processed poorly.

Finishing the fireplace with plasterboard outside

How to decorate a fireplace? Drywall? Quite a good option, especially since it occurs quite often. Especially when electric fireplaces are sheathed.

The process as a whole looks like that:

Today, fireplaces mainly perform only a decorative function, equipping them to create coziness, an appropriate atmosphere.

A fireplace in a house or apartment is both a sign of luxury and an interior detail that gives comfort, peace, and warmth. And what is a romantic evening without fire? And besides, fire is one of those things that you can look at indefinitely. Inspired and already engaged in the arrangement of the fireplace?

Leave the installation to the professionals, and think about how to finish the portal for the fireplace so that it fits into the interior of the room and is almost its central element.

The fireplace can be anything - gas, electric, biofuel, natural, even imitation. And it can be placed in a corner, in a wall or against a wall, be an island. Any of them are beautiful.

The main thing is that the fireplace itself, and the mantelpiece, portal, fireplace accessories are chosen with taste and look harmonious.

In the meantime, the fireplace is being mounted, there is time to think about what the fireplace portal will be like. You can use different materials.

  • Brick.
  • Wood in the form of a solid array, lining or panels.
  • Decorative stone - artificial or natural.
  • Modeling.
  • Drywall.
  • Plaster.
  • Ceramic tiles.

Advice: all materials must be fire resistant, and drywall and wood are impregnated with special compounds that prevent combustion.

Before moving on to the options for finishing the portal, it is worth considering the height of the fireplace, its width, and location.

  • Fireplace and portal style. They must match. This largely depends on the finish and location.
  • Location and size. If the hearth is located near the floor, then both a narrow and a wide model will do. But wall-mounted fireplaces or those that are raised above the floor should be wide. The exception is island fireplaces, which are not attached to any of the walls.
  • The portal is associated with the design of the fireplace and its task is to emphasize this. If the fireplace itself protrudes, then the portal must be on the same level with the fireplace, otherwise all the beauty of an open fire will be lost.
  • Proportions. Consider not only the hearth itself, but the space surrounding it. So, for a floor fireplace it is necessary free place right in front of him. If this is hard, prefer wall model. In addition, the proportions and sizes should be maintained. The classic ratio is when ¾ of the entire height of the portal is occupied by a fireplace and ½ of its width.
  • It is not necessary to build a portal in advance without having a real fireplace model. It happens that either the dimensions do not correspond to those indicated on the site, or you can simply miss various little things during its installation - wiring, chimney, fastening. Yes, and with the design you can miscalculate in shade, material. Conclusion - it is easier to deal with a ready-made, already installed fireplace.
