Breadbox - what is it used for, what should be the dimensions, features of different types. Breadbasket wooden. How to make it with your own hands Do-it-yourself carved bread bins made of wood

The ideal place to store fresh bread is a wooden product, which prevents the product from spoiling, retains its original properties and taste. The popular name for a favorite kitchen accessory is a bread box. A unique wooden bread box, made from improvised materials with your own hands, will be an excellent gift and decorate any home.

The presented article contains general recommendations, diagrams and drawings for independent work, gives tips and ideas for decorating finished products. If you follow these schemes, you can get attractive and practical models for home use.

Features of wooden models

Natural wood is well ventilated, has an attractive appearance. The bread bins, which are designed and decorated in country style, ethnic variant or Provence style, will become especially conceptual.

The optimal choice of raw materials are ash sheets, linden and birch wooden boards. These types of wood do not have a distinct and intrusive odor (such as spruce and pine). They do not interrupt the taste of bread and meet all environmental requirements.

An ideal bread box will turn out from juniper or birch bark, but not every craftsman will be able to find a suitable leaf of wood. You can try to find similar material in the shops of folk art.

In addition to the advantages, it is worth remembering the disadvantages of a wooden container for storing bakery products:

  • a wood product requires a special approach, it must be carefully monitored so that mold and rot do not appear on the surface;
  • a wooden bread box cannot be cleaned with standard household chemicals, nor can it be washed in a dishwasher;
  • temperature changes in the room are detrimental to wooden products;
  • you need to understand in advance that a wooden bread box has a certain service life, it needs to be changed periodically, since the wood base actively absorbs odors, which are very difficult to remove, the optimal care regimen is regular airing.

Varieties of wooden bread bins

Strictly speaking, wooden products include those that are listed in groups:

  • birch bark bread bins;
  • plywood bread bins;
  • bamboo breadbaskets;
  • breadbaskets made of wooden components (for example, sticks).

Any of these materials perfectly "breathes". The air inside such products naturally circulates and therefore birch bark, plywood, bamboo can be easily combined in one bread box, complementing it with wooden elements to your liking.

Depending on the format of the door, they are divided:

  • simple bread bins - without canopies and handles;
  • bread bins with carvings;
  • wooden bread bins with blinds.

How to choose a bread box

Personal preferences, tastes and style of the kitchen influence the choice of product, but there are a number of general recommendations that should not be ignored:

  1. The volume and size of the breadbasket may vary. The standard product holds one or two rolls. You should not store bread too tightly - it will quickly become stale and spoil. The choice corresponds to the number of family members. If 1-2 people live in the house, a small compact product will be enough for them. For a large family, it is advisable to make a bread box for several compartments or a two-tier one.
  2. Also, when developing a work scheme, the type of bread that will be stored inside the product is taken into account. Wheat does not get along well with rye. If you combine them in one wooden box, the wheat one will become covered with mold, and it can also be saturated with specific additives that are usually present in rye bread recipes - garlic, caraway smell, or the smell of coriander, etc.
  3. When preparing the pattern, care must be taken to ensure that the scheme provides for a tight hermetic connection between the lid and the base. This will keep the bread fresh for a long time. The lid of the wooden bread box can move or be removable. One way or another, it must adjoin tightly and securely close.
  4. The color, shape and design of a wooden accessory for the kitchen will be prompted by the style of the kitchen. The classic semi-circular model is compact, suitable for more options, but it is not so easy to care for it. A tall, square model will take up more space in the kitchen, but it can be easily cleaned of dirt.

For a small space, a hanging bread bin is a good choice.

General scheme of work

Briefly, you can outline the process in the form of stages / steps:

  • according to the drawing, tightly interlocking elements are prepared (for any size);
  • the seams at the joints are treated with glue for a better connection; in the places of fortifications, these joints are carefully processed with sanding paper;
  • the formation of the door is the final stage of work, and modern models are most often equipped with the so-called curtain of slats;
  • so that the movement of parts relative to each other is easy, a groove is laid inside the body.

Schematic representation of bread bins

You can make a simpler cover so that there is no need for additional structural elements. It is folding and does not complicate the scheme of work. The material for this form can also serve as wooden planks. Sometimes they are replaced with a bamboo rug, which is stitched and reinforced with red thread.

When developing a work scheme, it should be taken into account that the model can be either completely wooden or combined, where the main part of the product is made of wood, but there are plastic, metal elements, etc.

Also, the bread box can be built into the kitchen set, then its production is carried out according to an individual project.

How to prepare for work

The first step in the manufacture of any handmade product is the preparation of materials and tools that will be required during assembly. They are selected in accordance with the selected scheme. The materials were mentioned above, now you should touch directly on the working inventory.

In the workshop, the process is accelerated, as it is possible to use a milling circular machine. At home, you can get by with a hand tool:

  • manual electric jigsaw;
  • joiner's ruler with a clamping mechanism;
  • manual cutter;
  • clamps;
  • jigsaw machine (in the absence of one, you can replace it with a simple manual model).

Schemes of basic models

The first option is a spacious, two-section bread box model. It is intended for a family of four or more people. Front covers not only perform the function of isolating the product from the external environment, but are also suitable for cutting bread. To use them, you need to lift them up and take them out of the special slots. The upper part of the bread box is good for storing various jars where you can pour salt and spices.

The illustration shows a diagram of the cut of parts, as well as various angles of the product in the finished form, the corresponding dimensions are given. The parts of the bread box are assembled in a standard way (connection and additional gluing of elements), except for the special position of the covers.

This model can hang on the wall or stand on the wall - it is universal. In order to make the model wall-mounted, a special hole is made in the back wall.

The drawing is missing the upper part of the breadbasket. The master can apply different schemes at his discretion, use different decor and even abandon the upper part, making the model more concise and compact.

The material for the bread box is a ten-twelve mm board. (width of raw material). Parts should be tightly located side by side - butt to butt. To ensure a tight fit, use screws, nails. Another option is a spiked joint, which, after fitting, is lubricated with glue.

The main difficulty and design feature is the creation of neat and even slots for lid movements. The walls of the groove are cleaned with wood wrapped in sanding paper.

The second version of the assembly of the breadbasket with a hinged lid also performed according to the standard scheme. The shape of such a product duplicates the popular plastic and metal models. The peculiarity of this bread box is a flexible lid-curtain made of planks on a cord. A tight fit of wooden slats is possible due to the special profile shown in the diagram. One edge of each part is rounded, another has a small groove in the form of a groove. Due to this, the movement of the cover occurs and a tight fit of the parts of the structure is formed.

The two-story model is also equipped with a flexible curtain. Another design feature is that the width of its shelves is different (the upper one is narrower).

A restriction in the form of a wide bar is installed behind, and it is located so that there is free space between it and the rear common wall for both shelves. The curtain gets there when you open the bread box. Otherwise, the product inside would interfere with the movement of the parts relative to each other.

If these three options are difficult for a novice master, you can make a bread box with a flexible hinged lid, which is made up of narrow slats. Its connection with the base is magnetic. There are also special latches on sale - you can use them for lack of magnetic parts. The diagram shows a variant with two sections.

Step 2 We round the details of the sidewalls with a jigsaw and grind the edges.

Step 3 We form the base for the door. We align the length of the slats of the lid, after which we glue the parts with PVC glue, fix them in clamps, wait for the glue to dry completely.

Step 4 Sanding a rounded part for a door.

Step 5 Open the rest of the details of the bread box.

Step 6 We grind the glued parts and fix them together with PVC glue.

Step 7 After the parts of the cover have dried out, we assemble the frame.

Inside any breadbasket, you can equip several compartments. To separate, you need a board or plank.

Making a bread box from wooden sticks

An unusual and interesting way is to create a container for storing bread from popsicle sticks. At first glance, this seems to be very difficult. But in reality, the process is not so complicated. The first work with sticks will allow you to design a product in 45 minutes, and with the second and subsequent approaches, the time is reduced to 30 minutes.

An additional advantage of a bread box made of wooden ice cream sticks is the exceptional strength of the product.

We collect the necessary materials for work

To work, you will need sticks and glue directly. The use of hot glue is undesirable if there is no corresponding skill. Otherwise, ugly marks remain on the bread box.

Layout of the first three sticks in the form of guides

Adding three sticks to a hexagon shape

At this stage, it is worth considering the layout, as in subsequent steps it will be reproduced and affect the final look of the product from wooden sticks.

The final stage of work. Making the bottom, since only the upper, not closed part of the bread box is ready at this step.

So the product should stand for 2-3 days and dry completely, and in the meantime, you can prepare a lid made of wood, birch bark, plywood, decorate it using decoupage technique, add decorative wooden elements, glue bows, stones and other decorative elements from the store for creativity.

A similar model can be made from Chinese sticks. In this case, the breadbasket will be larger and more spacious.

Bamboo bread box

The combined model is made of a simple napkin and some materials that play the role of a frame, decor and, as a result, make it easy and unpretentious to manufacture.

The master will need:

  • any suitable napkin;
  • strong paper - for example, a cardboard base;
  • self-adhesive film;
  • scissors to cut paper and fabric;
  • lace details;
  • pieces and cuts of fabric (depending on the method of finishing);
  • pencil for notes;
  • ruler for patterns and other measuring work;
  • decorative handle (if possible and desired - it can be purchased and supplemented with the design).

The first thing to do is to decide on the size of the breadbasket for storage. Dimensions dictate the size of the bamboo base. With a width of a napkin equal to thirty centimeters, the final width of the product will be 28 cm, the height of the bread box is seventeen centimeters. The depth of the final version is twenty centimeters.

For the frame, the details are marked on cardboard (in cm):

  • 28 to 20 - bottom;
  • 3.5 to 28 - before;
  • 17 to 28 - back;
  • sides - 17 to 20.

So that the napkin does not puff, the sides are rounded.

It is necessary to ensure that the film fits snugly to the base. There should be no dents, creases and swelling. A smooth processed frame base is the key to a quality work done to create a product.

The next stage is the processing of the napkin itself, which is cut into two parts. One will decorate the front wall with a height of 3.5 centimeters. The second will serve as a cover .

At the final stage, the general assembly of the structure takes place. The napkin is glued to so that the napkin can smoothly lie on the frame and cover it entirely. Here it becomes clear why the frame should be more compact than the lid.

You can decorate the finished product in different ways. The cover can be completed with felt patches, pieces of embroidery and knitting, beads, rhinestones and much more. The soft and flexible cover allows you to apply many techniques to it and not limit yourself to one thing.

The following section provides a brief overview of decor techniques that can be applied to both this model and all the basic schemes presented above.

A combination of handicraft techniques always looks advantageous if the materials and accessories are chosen harmoniously. You can decorate any part of the bread box, and in the case of a hinged bread box, you should think about the attractiveness of not only the front side and sides, but also the bottom.

Design of wooden bread boxes

In addition to making the base for storing bread, it is important to think about the decor of the product. Homemade bread bins with smooth, simple details leave room for creativity. For centuries, traditions have developed for decorating kitchen boxes with wooden lining, painting, engraving motifs, etc.

Table 1. Decor methods.

NameThe essence of technology
A good way to decorate a bread box and make it attractive is to add relief to it. The image can be anything - from individual parts of the pattern and ornament to large compositions. Motifs of nature, fairy tale characters and human figures look attractive on the tree. Pictures are carved on wooden parts using a manual milling cutter or an automatic milling tool.

Napkin technique, popular in various fields of creativity, allows you to decorate accessories and kitchen interior items with picturesque illustrations. Perfect for wood and perfectly flat surfaces, which is typical for many models of bread bins. At the same time, a piece of a napkin or a picture from a book or magazine will lie perfectly evenly, repeating the silhouette of the part and merging with the base. For decoupage, any image is used, including newspaper clippings and postcards.
This method is suitable for those who draw well. Brushes, wood paints and imagination are the ingredients for a well-built composition and skillfully selected decor of a bread box. A beautifully painted surface can contain any elements that fit into the style of the space: flowers, birds, landscapes, portraits of people in the interior, etc.
Craquelure can act as an independent element of decor, as well as an additional one. Its essence lies in the artificial aging of the surface. To do this, you need brushes, a special composition, protective gloves. The surface decorated "antique" gives a stylish look to many household items within the framework of the corresponding interior style.

Decoupage of a wooden bread box

In this material, we will consider one of the techniques for creating a unique handmade bread box - applying images to a wooden surface using the decoupage technique.

For high-quality performance and decoration of the product, the master will need the following materials.

  • elements with a pattern that can be glued (on a thin base - including a part of a napkin, the top of a thick postcard sheet, etc.);
  • sandpaper;
  • scissors;
  • acrylic primer;
  • acrylic paint;
  • varnish for woodworking;
  • PVA glue;
  • tassel.

The scheme for decorating a bread box using decoupage technique is presented in the form of a series of steps.

Step 1. The wooden surface of the bread box is rubbed with a layer of sandpaper

Step 2 Prime the surface and let dry.

Priming the wooden parts of the bread box

Step 3 We apply a layer of paint with a brush and wait for the first layer to dry completely.

Step 4 Decor elements are smeared with PVA glue or special decoupage glue and attached to the wooden details of the bread box. They are carefully leveled so that wrinkles do not appear on the surface of the wood, and they are also waiting for the wood to dry completely along with the glue.

Step 5 At the end of the work, a finishing coating is applied. This can be a standard layer of varnish or craquelure for the appearance of an antique effect on a handmade item.

If necessary, work with the first and subsequent layers of varnish is carried out the next day. It is not necessary to complete the work at once, if it is possible to wait. If there is time, it is worth pausing to make the product look even more impressive. For example, when using craquelure between the application of the first and final layers, you can use oil umber to fill the resulting cracks and visually highlight them.

Step 6 Finishing work in the decoupage technique is always associated with covering the product with several layers of acrylic varnish - two or three are enough to create a glossy or matte effect and visually complete the composition. Aged areas can also be tinted with bitumen, decorated with vintage tape, as well as wooden overlays with a thematic picture applied using the same technique.

Decoupage accompanies not only the base of the bread box and its lid, but also decorates the sides and individual elements.

Conclusion

A bread box is a useful thing in the household. The wood from which the product is made opens up scope for creativity. The flat and smooth details of the frame allow for a variety of finishing methods without the need for complex tools. You can assemble the product both from a specially purchased wooden sheet, and from improvised material. Caring for a bread box correctly is not about the appearance of the product, but also about the health of family members who eat bread every day. It is important that it be made in such a way that the products in it remain fresh and tasty.

Bread boxes come in different sizes, shapes and designs. The choice is made based on the dimensions of the kitchen, personal preferences of the household, the degree of filling of the container, woodworking skills. Making your own bread box is a great way to start decorating a house or apartment with your own hands. Techniques are diverse, where everyone will find something suitable for themselves.

Almost anyone can make a plywood bread box with their own hands, since this does not require expensive equipment. You can get by with a simple tool and a few tips, which we will describe in the framework of our article. The most important thing is to be careful and use quality material, as the design will be used to store food.

What you need to work

If you decide to make a bread box, then first of all you will need to have the following materials and fixtures on hand:

Plywood It is a basic material with very high quality requirements, it is best to choose the 1/1 grade, which has both attractive and reliable sides.

You also need to ideally match the sanded sheets, then you will have to process surfaces much less, which will greatly simplify and speed up the workflow, their price is higher, but the difference is not so great

Accessories Here you can, which are used when the doors are made in the form of valves, or a curtain if the door is mounted on them. Handles are also used, which should be not only comfortable, but also beautiful.

As for fasteners, it is best to use self-tapping screws with a thickness of 3 mm, and additionally strengthen all joints with wood glue

Tool To cut the material, either a manual or electric tool is used. Do not forget about the need to grind the ends, for this, ordinary sandpaper with different grain sizes is used.
Protective compounds The wooden surface must be protected from moisture and dirt by applying a protective coating. Since we will be making a bread box, it is necessary to use either special oils or edible varnishes in order to exclude a negative impact on human health.

Important!
To make a quality product, you need to take very careful measurements and mark all the elements.
In this work, you can not do without a tape measure, ruler, square and carpenter's pencil.

Process description

We will tell you how to properly prepare the material, how to choose it and what nuances you should pay close attention to. Every detail is important here, so you should carefully follow all the recommendations.

Preparatory stage

This stage includes a number of important steps:

  • First you need to choose a high-quality manufacturing material, it is better to use plywood with a thickness of about 10 mm, then the bread box will be durable and can withstand even significant loads. We recommend using options with a top layer of birch veneer, as this wood is harder and does not emit resins, unlike softwoods;

  • You also need to make do-it-yourself bread box drawings from plywood, perfect accuracy is not needed here, the most important thing is to determine all dimensions so that you can clearly navigate in the process of work and avoid mistakes. You can use ready-made options from the Internet or specialized literature, it will not be difficult to find them, and we will talk about one interesting solution;

  • Based on the sketch, the dimensions of all elements are determined, and then it is necessary to draw a sheet of plywood. Properly arrange each element in order to spend the material as economically and rationally as possible.

Cutting and assembly

The main work begins after the markup, there is nothing complicated in them, however, the instructions in this chapter will help you understand the process even better:

  • First of all, you need to cut all the elements, for this, either a jigsaw or a hand saw with a fine tooth is used. The material is very easily damaged when sawing, so it is necessary to apply a mixture of wood glue with water in a ratio of 1: 2 along all lines and wait for the composition to dry;

Important!
When working with a hand tool, do not press too hard, this will achieve maximum.

  • After cutting, you need to carefully process all the ends, for this, ordinary sandpaper is enough, the surfaces are leveled and rounded to make the elements more attractive;
  • In the sides, grooves are cut for the doors, which simultaneously perform the function of boards for cutting bread. In the middle is a partition on which there is a bar with grooves. You can do it easier: do not make a partition, but attach a solid door to the curtains, the decision depends on you;
  • Further, the elements are fastened together, it is important to drill holes of small diameter before screwing in screws to avoid cracking the material. It is better to choose thinner fasteners so that it is hardly noticeable on the finished product, the caps are recessed, and then sealed with putty to match the surface color;
  • Then you need to attach the doors, if they are installed on the curtains.. Also, do not forget about the handles, with their help, using the bread box will be much more convenient. Lastly, a protective composition is applied to the surface.

Conclusion

To make a bread box for a summer residence or at home is within the power of any person, the most important thing is to have the necessary materials on hand and do the work carefully. The video in this article will tell you the features of the workflow, all questions can be asked in the comments under the review.

Bread and pastries have long been stored in special wooden containers (boxes). bakery products in the bread box stay fresh longer and do not go stale. A modern, factory-made fixture can be made of wood, plastic, or metal. It corresponds to its purpose, but a hand-made product can become a real decoration of the kitchen interior.

Before starting work, you need:

  1. sketch a drawing of a household item;
  2. prepare all the necessary tools;
  3. choose suitable materials.

A preliminary sketch will allow you to make a more accurate drawing and imagine what the finished product will look like.

Materials and tools

The selected material must be environmentally friendly. You can not take toxic plastics and boards painted with non-food paints. For kitchen utensils are best suited:

  1. plywood;
  2. birch bark;
  3. wooden mat;
  4. bamboo.

Important! For the manufacture of kitchen utensils, only those types of wood that do not have a specific smell are suitable. Softwoods such as spruce and pine are not suitable due to their persistent aroma. Bread quickly absorbs odors.

For fastening individual components and parts you will need:

The doors of bread bins differ in the way they function. They can:

  1. move apart in different directions;
  2. open in the usual way;
  3. go up and fold like horizontal blinds.

Fasteners for doors are selected according to their type.

In addition to the material and fasteners, you need to purchase the right tool. A standard carpentry kit will do.

Forms and types of homemade bread bins

Bread can be stored in bread bins having the shape:

  1. open deep dish;
  2. containers with doors;
  3. boxes with lids.

Breadbaskets can be made from the most unexpected materials. Home craftsmen manage to build these kitchen utensils from:

The most common bread bins in everyday life are made of wood and wicker. There are wicker boxes in almost every home. They differ in shape and size, they are united by a functional purpose.

Some craftsmen create wicker kitchen utensils from plain paper. To do this, the sheets are folded into a tight tube and glued together. Then they are intertwined, creating unusual things. At the final stage of production, the surface of the product is covered with a layer of primer and paint. Paper tubes can be dyed in different colors at the very beginning of the manufacture of utensils.

With some woodworking skills, a bread storage container can be hollowed out from a single piece of wood. Earthenware cookware can be made by anyone, as long as they have the ability to fire the finished piece in a professional kiln.

Attention! Things made in the Russian style came into fashion. Birch bark can become a decoration of the kitchen. A stylish and beautiful bread tray is woven quite simply. It is difficult to find and properly prepare birch bark. It must be sufficiently soft at the time of manufacture of the container.

Measurements and drawings

A sketch of the future product is preliminarily made. It must take into account the specifics of the selected material. The drawing is created based on the drawing and the original dimensions.

For such a product, you need to take into account the average amount of bread consumed by the family. In other words, the size of the bread box depends on the amount of bakery products that will be stored in it.

The container must have a depth, height and length. All these parameters should take into account the dimensions of standard bread rolls. In this case, baking should fit freely in the box.

A factory-made bread box with curtain doors can easily fit 3-4 loaves inside.

Drawings for a wooden product can be drawn immediately on plywood or previously on a sheet of paper. It looks something like this:

Breadbox on your own: step by step instructions

To make a product according to the given drawing, you need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  1. small wooden or plywood boards;
  2. sushi mat;
  3. jigsaw;
  4. sandpaper;
  5. small nails;
  6. furniture stapler;
  7. glue for gluing PVA wood;
  8. door handle.

Work is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. first of all, a drawing of details is drawn on the surface of the plywood piece;
  2. all walls and covers are cut with a jigsaw;
  3. the sides of each plank are carefully sanded;
  4. the structure is assembled according to the drawing.

In the drawing, the numbers indicate the structural details of the future product:

  • two rectangles with units are the bottom of the bread box;
  • the third rectangle with the number 1 is the back panel;
  • fourth one - top;
  • deuces are sidewalls;
  • number 3 - front panel.

It is better to round off the upper corners on the side walls, so it will be easier to fix the mat.

The mat in this design works as a door. It is attached with a furniture stapler. The product is ready, it remains to put any suitable rug on the bottom of the bread box. It can be made from food grade plastic or fabric.

Bread box - a vase can be made of paper and a plastic bottle. In this case, a five-liter container is used as a form. Work goes in the following sequence:

  1. The plastic bottle is cut lengthwise from the neck down. The result should be two equal parts.
  2. Paper (newspaper) is torn into small pieces.
  3. The plastic form is coated with vaseline.
  4. Pieces of paper are glued one after another onto the surface of the mold.
  5. Each paper layer is abundantly smeared with PVA glue, there should be 5-6 layers in total.
  6. The glued form is set aside for several days until completely dry.
  7. After the glue has completely dried and the papier-mâché has become hard, it can be removed from the base.
  8. A stand is made in the same way, only a deep plate is taken as the initial form.

The resulting parts of the product are covered with paint. You can decorate the breadbasket in any way possible:

  1. paint;
  2. paste over with beads;
  3. make a mosaic of colored pea halves.

For those who sew and knit, it will be easiest to make a beautiful baking container from patches and threads.

It is easy to make a birch bark braid if you follow the following rules for preparing material:

The type of weaving is chosen according to your own taste. It can be a standard weave of stripes with a rug. This is the easiest way for beginners. It is best to make the details of the product individually, and then connect the entire structure together.

Whatever materials the kitchen utensils are made of, the main thing is that they are made neatly and tastefully. In this case, the time and effort spent will give the desired result.

Since ancient times, it was customary to store bread in wooden boxes, which the people began to call bread boxes. Thanks to this device, the pastries remained fresh and did not get stale for a long time. Modern bread boxes perform the same function as their predecessors, but now they are more functional and easier to use.

Now in any hardware store you can buy this device. And here, a do-it-yourself wooden bread box will become a real decoration of the interior of any kitchen and retain the warmth of the master's hands. Where to start and what material do you need?

You need to prepare in advance before starting the manufacturing process. Stock up on all the necessary tools and materials, prepare drawings of the future product in accordance with the dimensions, as well as the way the door functions. It is even possible to make an approximate layout if such work is carried out for the first time. The last thing is the design.

First you need to choose the material from which the case will be made. Do-it-yourself bread box can be made from:

  • Plywood
  • tree
  • bamboo
  • birch bark

Any of these materials is remarkably breathable and regulates moisture inside the bread box - they are often combined in one product. Thanks to these properties of wood, bread retains its taste and smell for a long time. For fastenings and connections, small screws, carpentry glue are used. Depending on how the door will open, small canopies and a handle may be needed. Breadbaskets are made into several types, depending on how the door is designed:

  • Simple
  • carved
  • Blinds

A standard carpenter's kit will do the job. The surface finish of the product can be a wound - it is determined by the design, and, accordingly, the finishing materials for the coating.

Making a wooden bread box with your own hands is quite simple. It is worth considering that the ideal option for this would be linden, ash and birch. Pine and spruce have a too strong smell that bread will absorb. The manufacturing process itself can be divided into the following stages:

  1. According to the drawing, all elements are cut out of wood, which should be tightly joined together. Dimensions can be arbitrary. An example of parameters is shown in the figure.
  2. Parts can be connected with screws, furniture studs or carpentry glue. More skilled craftsmen use a spike connection. Spikes are formed on some parts, and recesses on others.
  3. The seams at the joints are coated with glue for a better connection. In this case, all connections must be carefully processed. This is done with sandpaper.
  4. At the end, a door is made. A modern wooden bread box is usually equipped with a shutter door, which is made of thin planks.
  5. In order for the shutter door to move, you need to make a groove inside the body of the product, along which this element will move.

You can make a version of the door of a simpler sample. In this case, the curtain will lean outward. It is also made from thin strips. Often the slats are replaced with a bamboo rug, which is stitched with a strong thread.

In any case, such bread bins will be quite roomy and functional. Thanks to the material, the product is completely environmentally friendly and will suit any style of interior. The surface can be varnished on wood, after painting with a pattern. Those who are engaged in carpentry can decorate the body with wood carvings.

Plywood as an analogue of wood

A cheaper analogue of wood is plywood. A do-it-yourself plywood bread box is made according to the same principle as a wooden one. The main thing is to draw a sketch of the future product and cut out all the constituent elements with high quality. Plywood is difficult to work with, as the edges can peel, so you need to be very careful. To work, you will need the following tools:

  • Jigsaw for sawing
  • The drill will form holes for connecting parts
  • The grinder is designed for processing saw cuts

The last step is assembly. The figure shows the simplest example of this procedure.

Housing elements can be connected using glue, self-tapping screws and grooves. Hinges for fixing the door are installed outside. At the end, general grinding is performed, and then the surface is decorated. The housing must have holes for ventilation.

Bamboo bread bins

Bamboo material is not only a decoration for finishing the body of the finished product. Often, craftsmen make small bread bins from bamboo napkins. Such a product will be made for several hours, not days - this is the main plus.

For work you need:

  • bamboo napkin
  • Cardboard
  • self-adhesive
  • Scissors
  • Textile
  • Marking pencil
  • Decorative wooden handle

The dimensions of the future product are determined by the parameters of the napkin. The body is made of cardboard. The side walls on one side should be rounded. This is done so that the door closes smoothly and fits snugly against the structure.

Parts are glued together with glue. From above, from the inside, the made body is glued with self-adhesive. Thanks to this technique, the cardboard will become much stronger. The last step will be finishing with bamboo. Cut the napkin into two pieces. The first size corresponds to the bottom, and the second will be the door. Your finishing option will make the product unique.

Birch bark

Many craftsmen are interested in: how to make a bread box from birch bark? This material is very soft and pliable for weaving. It is difficult to buy this material, but you can make it yourself by cutting off the top layer of birch bark.

Since the body of the product is formed due to weaving, the bread box in its appearance resembles a box with a lid. Over time, the birch bark material hardens.

Weaving methods:

  • Mat
  • Angular

At the same time, you need to monitor the formation of the edges of the panels - they should be even and tightly woven. To do this, they use a few basic tricks, adding stripes for rounding.

The fabric for the lid and bottom is woven of the same size, and also applies to the side sections. The connection is a birch bark tape, which is woven into the gaps of the panels. A do-it-yourself birch bark bread box will make the interior of the kitchen more unique and authentic.

Bread is a special product. Since ancient times, wooden peddlers have been in popular use. It is said that in a skillfully made box, the bread remained soft and fragrant for almost a week. Porous, lightweight wood regulates moisture better than other materials. And the elegant design of wooden boxes - colorful paintings, intricate carvings - emphasizes love and respect for bread.

Modern wooden bread bins made by amateur craftsmen differ from the old boxes in a more convenient design. They are more compact, designed, as a rule, for a small family. For those who know how to handle carpentry tools, it will not be difficult to make one of them at home. When choosing one of the proposed options for making, estimate how much bread you will store.

Be guided by the following rule: the fuller the bread box, the slower the percentage of relative humidity inside it changes, the longer the bread remains soft. Therefore, for a small family, choose a small bread bin so that you can fill it all, and for a large family, choose a spacious one, preferably a two-section one (separately for wheat and rye bread). At the same time, the bread box should not be packed so that the loaves are crumpled and the lid barely closes.

Our first drawing shows the original bread box from the Oryol region. It is spacious, two-section, designed for a family of 4-5 people. Interestingly, the front covers of the bread box are two cutting boards, on which it is convenient to cut bread. The boards are pushed up and removed from the grooves. In the upper part, fenced with decorative borders, it is convenient to hold a salt shaker and spices.

Such a bread box can either stand on the table or hang on the wall. For this, a hole is provided in its rear decorative wall. Along with the general view of this bread box, front, top and side views are given with all the necessary dimensions.

The upper decorative part is not shown on these projections, you can show your imagination here. You can also make a bread box of a strict shape, without a decorative top. In this case, in the cutting boards, you need to make indentations for the fingers, which will allow you to move the boards in the grooves. Please note that through holes in the lid boards are undesirable, this will speed up the drying of the bread. The material for the manufacture of such a bread box is a 10-12 mm board. The best wood is linden, ash, birch.

It is better not to use pine and spruce, especially if they are resinous. The smell of coniferous wood and resin, in itself very pleasant, should not interrupt the unique aroma of bread.

The details of the bread box should be well fitted to each other. They are connected either end-to-end - with screws, nails, dowels, or viscous into a spike, when spikes and eyes (grooves for spikes) are cut out at the edges of the workpieces. After fitting, they are smeared with carpentry or casein glue and assembled.

The hardest part of this design is cutting neat pink grooves that the chopping boards-lids would easily walk along. Mark the groove with a thickness gauge and scriber and select it with a tongue and groove or chisel.

You can clean the walls of the groove with a wooden block wrapped in sandpaper (choose the size of the bar so that, taking into account the thickness of the sandpaper, it can easily move in the groove). But, of course, it is difficult to get an even groove with smooth walls with a chisel.

You can also select it using a finger cutter installed in the drill chuck.

Its shape repeats the modern metal and plastic bread bins produced by the industry, but its lid is unusual. Rather, it can be called a curtain, because it is flexible and moves in curved grooves along the edges of the side walls.

The curtain is assembled from thin wooden planks strung on a thin cord. The density of their fit is achieved due to a special profile (it is shown in our figure). A shallow groove is selected on one edge of each plank, the other edge is rounded. This bread box is designed for a small family.

.

On the other hand, a two-story breadbasket can hold plenty of bread for a large family. Its lid is the same flexible curtain as the previous bread box. The top shelf is slightly narrower than the bottom one.

Behind the top shelf limits a wide bar. It is set so that a gap is formed with the back wall. The flexible curtain goes there when the bread box is fully open. Without this small but important detail, a loaf of bread pressed against the back wall could prevent the curtain from opening. The groove for the movable curtain is best to choose a drill with a finger cut

For those who find this operation difficult, we offer the design of a bread box, it also has a flexible lid, assembled from narrow strips. But this lid does not move in the grooves, but leans back and, when necessary, closes tightly with a magnetic latch. Such latches designed for cabinets are commercially available. A craftsman in such an old craft as making a wooden bread box used a completely modern detail. This bread box is two-section; section for black bread.
