How to block an iron garage. How to cover the roof of the garage on rails. Prices for different types of tiles

When building a garage, it is important to build proper roofing responsible for thermal insulation and humidity in the room. Before you close the roof of the garage with your own hands, you need to choose the type of construction, materials for its construction, and also perform the installation correctly.

Since the garage is often located near the house, its roof must also have an aesthetically pleasing appearance. We will try to talk about how to make a reliable, inexpensive roof, and what materials are best suited.

Before proceeding with the choice of material for roofing, it is necessary to take into account the load exerted on the surface. Also, the mass of the structure should not give a strong load on the slings of the room and on its walls.

It is important to take into account such characteristics as the durability of the material, strength, reliability, external performance, resistance to ignition, corrosion, and many others. How to choose materials to cover the roof of the garage?

Slate

Roof slate installation.

Since the garage is often part of the house or located near it, it is recommended to use identical roofing materials. If the house has a slate roof, this material should also be used for the garage.

Products are quite easy to mount, but they have a fairly large mass. In this regard, it is recommended to use special lifting equipment or not work alone.

Its advantages include: hardness and the ability to hold a lot of weight, low heat in the sun, sound absorption and ease of repair. The main advantage is considered cheap. Main disadvantage slate cover- environmental friendliness. The slate is made from a mixture of asbestos and cement.

Asbestos dust is a carcinogen, dangerous to human health, therefore, in a number of countries, the manufacture of household items from it is prohibited. Also an obvious disadvantage is its weight - one sheet weighs at least 25 kg. In addition, slate quickly loses its attractive appearance and is easily destroyed under the influence of external forces.

If the owner is interested in the question of how to choose slate for the roof of the garage, he should use the help of consultants hardware store, because the quality of the material also depends on the manufacturer and the expected load.

Metal tile corrugated board

Before purchasing corrugated board for roof installation, you should consider the ability to withstand a large amount of snow. For example, if the roof slope is very obtuse angle, the load on the surface increases, which can cause subsidence of the roof.

The metal profile is attached to the crate by means of self-tapping screws with press washers. The sheets are overlapped, so the likelihood of water entering the truss system is minimized.

Garage from corrugated board.

In general, the profiled sheet has a long service life of the ceiling. There is no corrosion or moss due to polymer coatings. At correct fastening damage or breakage can be avoided. In addition, one profile sheet is at least 10 kilograms lighter than slate.

The profile sheet also differs from each other in color and size: the width of the products ranges from 940 to 1150 mm, the thickness of the profiled sheets varies from 0.4-0.8 mm, and the height of the waves is 8-57 mm. Under the color of profile sheets, you can choose a ridge, wind protection and gutters. Such a roof looks like a single whole.

In the case of corrugated board, the roof can last about half a century, which is a good indicator. It is possible to build a garage floor both with the help of corrugated board and with the use of other materials.

bituminous tiles

Another popular roof covering option is shingles. Its main advantage is the ease of installation, so that the owner can easily handle it on their own. It is also important to note that the material is capable of being used for at least 40 years. The obvious disadvantage is the high cost of the material.

Flexible tiles are able to withstand heavy loads, and are resistant to temperature extremes. She can provide reliable protection from the penetration of moisture into the room. On the modern market you can find a wide range of colors and styles in which manufacturers perform similar material.

This makes it possible to choose color scheme suitable for site design.

Roof types

Garage roof types

Having decided on the material of the roof, the owner will have to choose the shape of the roof structure based on architectural norms and aesthetic views. You can make the right overlap of the garage using a variety of forms, each of which has its own advantages and disadvantages.

In a constructive sense, there are 2 types of structures - flat and pitched. Pitched roofs can have one slope or several. The slope of the roof can be from 10 degrees to 60, depending on functional features loft and the taste of the owner of the garage.

By choosing attic option you can count on the protection of the building from external negative factors, as well as provide yourself with additional space for storing personal belongings.

Sloped pitched roof

A popular roofing option is shed roof with a slope. When choosing this option, the owner can count on reliable protection against negative impact external factors. Its design is simple, so covering the garage with your own hands will not cause difficulties.

To do this, you need to take care of the different heights of the side walls in advance. A Mauerlat is fixed on them, after which the rafters are fastened. Next, you need to create a crate and proceed with the installation of the roof.

For rafters in a similar design, you can use timber, metal beams, or simply connect two boards.

A pitched roof has many benefits, including:

  • affordable cost of roofing;
  • ease of installation;
  • erection speed;
  • high performance.

There is one drawback that must be taken into account. Such a roof can only be implemented in a garage no more than 4.5 m wide. In the event that the area of the garage is larger, it is necessary to think about the implementation of struts. If the owner can install additional supports, then the room can be up to 16 m wide.

Gable roof

Double pitched garage roof.

Since ancient times, a gable roof was considered the only true roofing option.

Many people think so even now, because this type of structure has many advantages:

  • a room appears under the attic, where the owner can store things or equip a rest room;
  • the slope more effectively fights snow mounds in winter time years, which prevents sagging of the ceiling;
  • attractive appearance.

As for the disadvantages, in this case it is important to understand that the higher the rise, the more materials will be needed to mount the structure.

The roof of two slopes is made in one of several options, differing from each other in installation technology:

  1. Inclined variant.
You will need to install two supports for the rafters. One of them will need to be installed in the eaves, and the other in the ridge. The lower part is attached to the Mauerlat, and the top to the run, which rests on poles or inner part walls. Such a system will put pressure on the walls of the room, so its use is not relevant in all cases.
  2. hanging option.
In this embodiment, the slings will rely solely on bearing structures, therefore, even in the presence of a large layer of snow cover, they will not exert pressure on the walls of the room. This option is relevant for garages created using sandwich panels.
  3. Frameless option.
This is the most easy option designs. For its emphasis, pediments made of brick can serve. It is important to bear in mind that in this embodiment, the length of the room cannot be more than 9 meters.

A gable roof is the most aesthetically pleasing roof option.

mansard roof

Mansard roof for garage.

Mansard type of roof suggests the most effective use available area. It has an original appearance and minimal heat loss through the roof.

In the event that the garage is installed on a quality foundation, you can perform two-level design, instead of one-story garage. Conduct construction works really even without special experience, the main thing is to stick to technical plan. According to the installation stages, a mansard roof is not much different from a gable roof.

Installation includes:

  • the creation of a Mauerlat, which is the basis;
  • laying the floor block;
  • creation of racks and runs;
  • fixing rafters and other important elements.

Due to the broken type of design, the volume is significantly increased usable area, which can be used for the purpose of arranging an additional room.

Roof with three and four slopes

Three-pitched or four-pitched roofs are installed exclusively on garages with large area. Due to the uniqueness of the roof, the garage will acquire an original appearance, and the heat will remain indoors longer.

Depending on the angle of inclination and area of the room, it may be necessary to different amount materials. Having completed a high roof, you can create another room above the garage. It will be necessary to raise the roof according to a non-standard system, and it can be strengthened by a strong main beam in the center.

We make a roof truss system

Roof truss system.

Rafters are the main element of the roof structure and it is worth thinking about its construction in advance. It is necessary to correctly calculate the angle of inclination and the weight of the structure that will support the rafters. The roof truss system should be mounted depending on the type of roof chosen by the owner.

In the case of a shed roof, you will need rafters with a cross section of at least 50 * 150 mm. The owner can choose the level of inclination independently, based on climatic conditions region.

For two pitched roof it is necessary to place a special ridge in the center, connecting the entire roof truss system. The most difficult installation option is considered to be a tent pitched roof, therefore it is better to entrust its creation to a professional.

Roof covering with slate and ondulin

As a roofing material, garage owners often prefer slate or ondulin. In appearance, they practically do not differ. The only difference is that ondulin is more flexible and more convenient to work with, but slate is much cheaper. In addition, ondulin is made from more environmentally friendly materials.

It is necessary to start laying work with the installation of the frame. After that, the laying of the material begins from the bottom corner.

We use corrugated board and metal tiles

Roof deck construction.

Decking and metal tiles are used equally often. The choice of corrugated board will greatly simplify the installation of the material for the owner, since the profile is simple and fairly light in weight. Such materials provide high resistance to external weather conditions and are able to last for a long time.

Roof covering with roll materials

This is the easiest way to lay roofs used by modern construction companies, because it is easy to operate and install. Roll materials cannot be called durable: their service life is less than that of ondulin or corrugated board.

Roll materials are most often used as patches on a previously made floor, if it has already become unusable.

Outcome

Equipped technical information, necessary materials and natural ingenuity, any person will be able to cover the roof of the garage on their own, without the help of professionals. This will help save money on calling a team of specialists and get a unique experience.

The modern market offers a large number of materials used to raise or cover the roof. The owner can make the choice of building materials, as well as the shape of the roof, on his own, but in the calculations he should not neglect architectural standards.

The excellent quality of the garage roof is the key to successful and reliable storage of a car in it. It is she who protects the vehicle from precipitation, wind and influence sun rays.

How to cover the roof of the garage? A question that many motorists ask themselves. Much depends on the design of the building, the time of its service, the financial capabilities of the developer. The main criterion when choosing a roofing material is its quality. Don't skimp on it. Inexpensive material has a quality corresponding to the price and will only speed up the subsequent repair of the roof.

Despite the abundance of various roofing materials, all of them are not without their pros and cons, regardless of price. When choosing, choose best option roofs. The garage is non-residential, so do not purchase expensive materials providing noise isolation.

Roofs

Garage structures include gable, single-pitched and flat roofs. Flat or shed roofs are mounted on adjacent buildings. On apart standing garages gable roofing, they can be equipped with an attic for storing tools.

Roofing materials

Asking yourself the question of what is the best way to cover the roof of the garage, the developer must know that it is not only protection from precipitation.

When choosing a material for a roof, you need to pay attention to its cost, durability, ease of installation.

When purchasing expensive material, the developer must be sure that he can cover the roof of the garage with his own hands. To work with some materials, you need to have professional skills and knowledge, as well as a special tool.

A detached or attached garage on a personal plot must be covered with the same roofing material as the adjacent building. The better to cover the roof of the garage - the question is not idle, in many respects the safety depends on its decision vehicle and cost of work.

Inexpensive roofing materials - slate, profiled sheet, roofing material - can be used House master. For their installation, it is enough to have a hammer, a hacksaw and other simple tools that should be in any home.

Choosing the one you like and suits by all criteria roofing material, you can start covering the roof of the garage.

Ruberoid

How to cover the garage roof with roofing material - the most popular and available material with excellent waterproofing properties? It withstands low and high temperatures, exposure to sunlight and precipitation.

The roofing felt consists of roofing paper treated with special bitumen, which is covered with a refractory alloy on top. The material is characterized by a long service life and reliability. It is also easy to maintain and install.

Making mastic

Before covering the roof of the garage with roofing material, it is necessary to prepare mastic from bitumen. She is hot and cold.

Cold is prepared from kerosene, bitumen and asbestos, which is used as a filler. A container of suitable volume is filled with a mixture of 2/3 and heated over moderate heat. In the process of boiling it is necessary to carefully remove the foam. After cooling, the mastic is ready.

To prepare hot mastic, you will need a thin-walled container with a lid, it will protect the mixture from impurities. Bitumen is prepared within 1-3 hours and is consumed only hot.

Garage roof preparation

Before laying any roofing material, the surface of the garage roof must be carefully prepared. All dust and dirt is removed, all irregularities are removed.

Roofing material laying

When asked what to cover concrete roof garage, many experienced motorists and garage owners answer - roofing material. This is a simple and inexpensive way.

Before starting work, you need to prepare right amount materials. It is especially necessary to ensure that the surface of the roofing material is not overheated, otherwise it will lose its qualities.

The laying of roofing material begins with the lubrication of the roof surface with mastic. Then the bitumen is heated by a gas burner, after which the first layer of roofing material is laid on it. It must be well pressed to the surface of the roof. This is done with a special roller. Experienced Builders it is recommended to carry out work on laying roofing material at positive temperatures.

Cost calculation

How much does it cost to cover the roof of a garage - this question interests everyone who has ever built it. The approximate cost is equal to the amount of funds spent on the purchase of all materials.

A simple counting example. The roof surface of the garage is 13 m². The roofing material is laid in two layers, which means that it will need 26 m². It is recommended to take material with a small margin. Two rolls of 15 meters are purchased, its average price is 250 rubles. 2 x 250 = 500 rubles were spent on roofing material. When buying ready-made mastic, 20 liters costs 450 rubles, you must expect that it takes 2 liters per 1 m². For an area of 30 m², you will need 60 liters, that is, three packages of the finished mixture. It will cost 3 x 450 = 1350 rubles. If the roof is covered with one's own hands, then these are all expenses, if not, the cost of paying hired workers must be added.

Bikrost - soft roofing material

To the question of how to cover the roof of a garage with a slight slope, there is an adequate answer - bikrost. This soft roofing material is worth paying attention to, it combines a low price and excellent quality.

Bikrost is a layer of fiberglass coated on both sides with a bitumen compound. This makes the material universal for any type of roofing. It protects the roof well from moisture, it is used for laying on a new roof, as well as for repairing an old roofing surface.

Bicrost laying

How to cover the roof of the garage with bikrost so that it meets all the requirements for it? It should be noted that this material is laid on top of a concrete screed, on which the installation of thermal and waterproofing has been completed.

According to the accepted technology, bikrost on new roofs is laid in two layers, and these layers should have different technical characteristics.

Varieties of bikrost

To understand how to cover the roof of a garage with bicrost, you need to have an idea of the different types of it and choose the one that is most suitable for this particular roof.

Bikrost HPP is made of a canvas made of fiberglass coated with a layer of bitumen. To protect it, a film is applied on both sides, which protects it from sticking foreign particles. This type of material acts as the bottom layer when laying roofs.

Bikrost HKP has a difference from the type of HPP: on its upper layer applied granulate, which plays a protective role. This view is great for arranging the top layer. Slate or granulate serve as protection for the bituminous layer against sunlight.

Bikrost TKP has more improved parameters compared to HKP. It consists of frame fiberglass. The top protective layer is similar to HKP and is made of slate and granulate, and the other is made of film. TKP is suitable for laying on any roofs.

Bikrost TPP serves as the initial layer of the welded roof, and the top layer is made of HKP or TKP.

The answer of many people to the question of what is better to cover the garage is this: bicrost is an excellent material for arranging a welded roof. The only note: do not use the same types for the top and bottom layers.

Stages of laying a bicrost

The material is laid on a carefully prepared surface. concrete screed cleaned of dirt and dust. Humidity of the surface to be coated should not exceed 4%. When repairing garage roof you need to remove all the old coating.

Before laying the bicrost, the roof surface is primed with a primer having special composition. It is made from bitumen and gasoline in a ratio of 1/3. The primer is applied to the surface with brushes or brushes. The primer must dry completely.

After that, the final stage begins - laying bikrost. Work begins from the bottom of the roof, the rolls are rolled across. The overlap at the ends, which should not form a common butt line, must be at least 15 cm.

Material Handling

So, let's cover the roof of the garage with a bikrost. This is done in the following way. First, the desired piece of material is measured, cut off and twisted to the middle from both edges. It is subjected to heating with a gas burner, while the roll should be untwisted towards itself, pressing with a roller. Then repeat the operation from the other side. It is not recommended to walk on a newly laid roof, as the waterproofing layer of the bicrost can be damaged.

When working with a roller, it is necessary to ensure that bitumen streaks that appear at the junction do not form folds. To prevent this, it is recommended to roll pieces of bicrost from the center to the edges. At the junction, two layers of material should be glued. By the same principle, the top layer of the roof is laid.

Roof made of corrugated board

The safest roof is reinforced concrete covered with welded roofing material. The most beautiful is a gable of metal tiles. The lightest and most inexpensive is a roof covered with corrugated board. What material to cover the roof of the garage, the owner himself decides, based on several factors: the size of the garage, its location, the design of the roof.

The professional flooring represents the pro-thinned-out sheets on which the layer of special polymer is applied. This roofing material has a number of distinctive characteristics, which significantly distinguish it from others:

  • It has a small weight, which makes it easier to truss the roof system.
  • Galvanization and polymer coating greatly increase the operational life of the material, make the corrugated board invulnerable to aggressive environmental influences.
  • Material is released various colors, this allows the developer to choose the right tone.

Installation of a roof from a professional flooring differs in simplicity. Any home craftsman will make it with his own hands, having initial building skills and simple tools. Work can be done at any time of the year.

How to cover the roof of the garage with corrugated board and what is needed for this, we will tell further. The installation of the material is carried out on a wooden crate, which must be mounted on the garage roof before starting work. The design of the crate is selected depending on the slope of the roof and the height of the corrugation.

Decking is fixed to wooden crate roofing screws at the bottom of the sheet. On the sloping roof installation is carried out from the top, on a flat one - from left to right.

Like many materials, corrugated board has its own small minus. During installation you will need additional details, with which the joints and sides are finished. When performing work, it will be necessary to adjust the parts to each other. When deciding how to cover the roof of the garage, the developer should keep this in mind.

Fiberglass garage roof

This material is in great demand by garage developers, they are attracted by its water-repellent properties, strength, and long service life. A big plus that increases its popularity is the ability to use it as the main roof. The cost of glass isol is relatively low, so its use significantly reduces the cost of building a roof. This is an important fact for many Russians.

Consider step by step how to cover the roof of the garage with glass insulation. The material is used for laying flat roofs having a solid base.

The first thing to do is to remove debris, dirt and dust from the roof.

Secondly, the surface is checked for defects. If they are, then they are removed or repaired with bitumen, putty and other similar materials.

Thirdly, after the removal of defects, a primer is applied, if there are difficulties with its acquisition, then the primer can be made from ordinary bitumen. It just needs to be diluted with gasoline. Then the roof is covered with a primer coat with a roller.

The material is laid on the roof of the garage in several ways.

mechanical laying

The most popular and affordable method, but experienced roofers warn that it does not guarantee absolute reliability. On a cleaned base with an overlap of at least 15 cm, rolls of glass isol are rolled out. This option is good for a roof that has a slope that promotes water runoff.

Installation of glass insulation begins from the lower edge of the roof. After finishing work, the seams are best treated with resin or mastic.

Laying glass insulation with a burner

Heating the lower layer of glass isol with a gas burner, it is simultaneously laid on the base of the roof. The heated bitumen and the lower surface are firmly bonded to each other.

Work should be done in pairs. One worker warms up the stekloizol, and the other presses it to the surface of the roof base.

The next piece of glass isol is laid on the rolled out previous piece with an overlap of 10 cm, they are firmly fastened together.

Laying with mastic

Mastic is applied to the roof, glass insulation is laid and crimped with a heavy roller. The absence of a gas burner simplifies this method and makes it less dangerous. The fact is that glass isol is a flammable material. When carrying out work on fire hazardous objects, it should be laid using mastic or mechanically.

Results

How to cover the roof of the garage, it is written in this article. Which method is better to use, what kind of material is more suitable for a particular garage, the developer himself will decide. The article will help him understand all the intricacies of the choice of roofing material and the methods of its installation.

The garage is a very valuable space not only for car owners. Here you can equip a workshop, warehouse or even a bathhouse. Therefore, the roof of the garage should be as reliable as the walls. And so that the roof can withstand all climatic and physical exercise, you need to pay maximum attention to the issues of its overlap. To do this, you need to take into account all the design characteristics, styling features and the specifics of the materials used. This, as a result, will help to close the roof with your own hands quickly and efficiently.

roof layers

There can be many types of structures. The most exotic, for example, can be called tambourine, multi-tweezer and half-hip. Of course, that each such roof has its own technical indicators. But the most common types include:

  1. Shed or with a slight slope - is considered the most inexpensive when calculating financial costs. Since it provides high-quality protection of the premises and, at the same time, requires the least amount of materials and efforts for overlapping.
  2. Gable - more expensive in terms of costs, but makes it possible to create extra space, which is often used as an attic, where less important or rarely used items are stored. The area of such a room directly depends on the height of the roof in the center and the width of the side walls.
  3. Gable uneven - is the best option between the two previous designs. In terms of costs, it is cheaper than the classic gable roof, but at the same time it cannot provide an attic. As a rule, it is used in regions with high rainfall.
  4. Three- and four-slope - this is expensive, therefore not the most common option. But, at the same time, it does not apply to exotic options. Provides at the same time both a good descent of snow and water during precipitation, and an attractive appearance to the structure.
  5. Attic is the most expensive in financial terms variant of those that can be found in Russia. Here are present as complex design solutions and the use of a large number of materials. But, on the other hand, it makes it possible to create a fairly spacious additional space for the attic. In fact, such roofs can be called two-story.

Gable roof

What materials are best to use

To qualitatively cover the roof of the garage, you need to correctly pick up the materials. The range on the market today is quite large, which sometimes complicates the selection process. Based on indicators such as minimum cost and ease of installation, the most popular include the following coatings:

  1. Decking and metal tiles are profiled metal sheets with galvanization. Most commonly used polymer coating. It is distinguished by high resistance to external destructive factors, long service life and low weight. Also, installation is quite simple, since fastening is carried out with self-tapping screws. And waterproofing is carried out using a protective film - a membrane.
  2. Slate - sold in a flat or wavy format. There are also asbestos-cement or ondulin, but the former are more popular. It is convenient because it is not subject to combustion, does not heat up from sunlight, has a long service life, and does not create noise during rain. Also, if the roof in the garage leaks or some sheets are damaged, then repairs are carried out quite easily and quickly by replacing individual plates.
  3. Ondulin - very unusual material for roofing, as it is made from organic fibers saturated with mineral components and bitumen. Differs in that it easily bends along the wave, can be used for 50 years, is resistant to mold and fungus, and is also not affected by acids. But during installation it is more complicated than with previous materials. Since the use of special gaskets is required before laying ondulin. It is very difficult to tolerate a sharp change in air temperature, which can lead to softening of the material.
  4. Bituminous tiles - made on the basis of bitumen, are soft and easy to install. Installation is carried out by gluing their boards or plywood to the base. It does not collapse from changes in air temperature, it is also not subject to corrosion and decay. But a coating of mineral chips is required.

Important! Another popular material with which you can block the roof of the garage is ceramic tiles, the price of which, however, is very high. Because of this, this material is not used as often as others.

Roof scheme

Do-it-yourself garage overlap technology

Depending on the material chosen, the roofing process will differ. Therefore, each type has its own instruction.

How to properly cover the roof with roofing felt

As a rule, laying is carried out in three layers, and on the crate. Hot mastic fillers and heated bitumen are used. To give the required properties are best suited:

  1. Dust sawdust.
  2. Fibrous products such as asbestos and others.
  3. A mixture of the first two materials.

First you need to clean the crate from dirt, tar deposits and grease, as well as remove the previous coating. Then grease the base bituminous composition, to ensure waterproofing, it is best to use two layers. Next, the roofing felt itself is laid directly, in lines in one direction and with an overlap of 15 centimeters. Also, we must not forget about the overlap of the lanes of the descent of water. To avoid unevenness and bubbles, the surface already covered with roofing material must be smoothed.

Roofing with roofing material

Covering with corrugated board or metal tiles

For a garage, a corrugated roof is also laid on a crate. For vapor barrier, you can use a film with anti-condensation properties. It is necessary to put it along the width of the roof, that is, across the slope, and fix it to the rafters with a construction stapler. The sagging of the rafters should be no more than 5 centimeters.

Further, bars are mounted on top of the film, the thickness of which should be at least 5 centimeters. Fastening is carried out with self-tapping screws. Only then, directly on the bars, a crate of boards is stuffed. The thickness of each should vary between 15-25 millimeters. The size of the crate is determined depending on the material. So, when using corrugated board, the distance between the boards can be 0.5 meters. When laying a metal tile, the step of the lathing must be determined in such a way that each transverse wave can be fixed.

Sheets are fastened with self-tapping screws, in the lower wave. The washer should be slightly pressed, but not pressed through. There are 4-5 self-tapping screws per square meter. Then you definitely need to put a skate, wind and cornice strips.

Profiled sheeting

Roof covering with slate and ondulin

First you need to assemble a crate of boards, 15 millimeters thick for ondulin and 25 millimeters for asbestos-cement slate. The step in both options will be 30 centimeters. Protection of water penetration is provided by lining roofing material, the strips of which are glued with bitumen.

Laying is carried out in several rows. At the same time, in order to avoid skew, it is necessary to put both types of material in a run, changing the location by about half a sheet for each next row. You need to lay the sheets from below, according to a certain pattern. For fixing it is worth using special nails with a sealant. Then you have to mount the ridge and fix the cornice to seal the space under the material.

Slate covering

A garage is a room, of course, not intended for habitation, but it cannot perform all its functions if the roof is constantly leaking. Especially often, car owners encounter this phenomenon in the spring, when the snow accumulated on the roof begins to melt. But a well-made roof will not leak and will not cause problems, and the car house will always be dry and comfortable. What is the best way to cover the roof of the garage to avoid all the trouble?

The purpose of any garage is protection from external influences of the vehicle. Rain, snow, wind can quickly spoil the appearance of the car, and for a motorcycle standing on the street, such effects are simply fatal. Due to excess moisture, corrosion processes on metal products begin to pass quite quickly, destroying the metal. That is why the garage must be of high quality, not have leaks.

The roof on the garage can be single-pitched or double-pitched. These are the most common options. In the first case, it is easiest to make a roof - it is a single slope, based on the walls of the building with different height. The angle of inclination can be different (up to 60 degrees) - usually this indicator depends on the climate in the region, the wind rose, and the selected roofing.

On a note! A roof with one slope is usually constructed if there is no need to create an attic.

Roofing material is laid on wooden rafters. The drop height is calculated by the formula H = D x tan a, where D is the width of the garage. The last indicator is selected according to the Bradis table. Wood for rafters must be treated with antiseptic compounds that will protect the material from the effects of biological organisms, and it is also recommended to cover it with compounds that reduce the likelihood of fire (flame retardants). The shed roof category also includes roofing, which is often found on garages built of concrete.

A gable roof is built if the garage is planned to be equipped with an attic. Usually such a roof has the shape of a triangle. The frame is connected at a certain angle rafter legs having support on the walls and at the top point of their connection. The height of the roof ridge H and the length of the rafters C can be determined by the formulas H = 0.5 x H (Z:2) and C = 0.5 x N/sin (Z:2), where Z is the slope value. For an equilateral roof, the use of the Pythagorean theorem is suitable.

Less often, but still, a multi-pitched roof is also equipped. However, it is already much more difficult to execute, because rarely anyone undertakes to build it with their own hands.

Advice! To create a roof on a garage with your own hands, beginners are advised to opt for a simple pitched roof.

ParameterDescription

To choose the type of roof and materials for it, it is worth considering the type of foundation and its strength, strength bearing walls, overlays. After taking into account the main indicators, the roofing material is selected in accordance with them.

It is important to take into account the wind load on the building, the location of the garage, the frequency of snowfalls and rains.

If the garage is located in a cooperative, then it is recommended to select such roofing material so that it is in harmony with the rest of the buildings.

To create a roof and cover it, you may need various tools. It is worth making a list of the ones you need and purchase or rent them before starting work.

Material Comparison

Any roofing materials can be used for the roof of the garage roof. Of course, most owners want to save on construction by choosing the material that is suitable for both quality and cost. Consider the main types of coatings used for roofing.

Ceramic tiles

This is one of the most beautiful and popular species roofing material. It is made from clay and therefore has advantages such as resistance to rust, sunlight, low temperatures and attack by microorganisms. The service life of the coating is long and is about 100 years. The disadvantages include the significant weight of the material, the difficulty in transportation due to fragility and the rather high cost.

Installation of such a roof is easy, but with a roof slope angle of more than 12 degrees, tiles should not be used. Also, it is not suitable for finishing a concrete garage.

Ondulin

It's kind of soft version slate, otherwise called euroslate. Has several color variations, which allows you to choose it for any style of building. The service life of the coating is 20 years (warranty period), the material protects the roof well from leaks, it is not dangerous from an environmental point of view, it is easy to install and easy. Another advantage is its low price. Among the shortcomings, the flammability of the coating can be noted, but by itself it will never catch fire. It also quickly fades in the sun and loses its color brightness.

Prices for various types of ondulin

One of the oldest roofing options. Represents the wavy sheets made of asbestos-cement mix. The material is durable, easy to repair, does not rust, cheap, does not burn. However, it is quite fragile, and with insufficient sealing of the roof, leaks can form.

On a note! Slate is one of the cheapest coating options, which is why it is often used to finish the roof of a budget garage.

Metal decking

A roofing option that replaced slate. Made from galvanized thin steel sheet, has waves or trapezoidal corrugations, due to which it acquires additional strength.

The material is easy to install, has a lot of color variations, lasts a long time in case of correct installation. Due to the polymer protective coating not afraid of rust and does not fade. The main disadvantage of the material is that if the polymer layer is damaged, the sheet will quickly rust. Moreover, you can damage the coating by just walking on it in rough shoes. It costs more than ordinary slate.

An option that is quite often used for finishing pitched roofs and flat roofs. It is a rolled material consisting of thick cardboard impregnated with bitumen and covered with a protective powder. It is very cheap, durable, well insulates the roof from water, easy to use. However, the material easily catches fire, breaks, and looks, to put it mildly, ugly. Can be used as a waterproofing layer in roof construction.

Polycarbonate

Yes, this material can also be used to make a garage roof or create a small carport. Polycarbonate is structured or monolithic. The latter resembles glass and is completely transparent. Suitable for creating flat version roofs.

The first version of polycarbonate is known as cellular or cellular. Very light, strong enough and flexible.

Roofing process

The design of the roof of the garage can consist of several stages, depending on what kind of roof is needed. For example, it can be built from scratch and for this you will have to build a truss system, lay waterproofing, and mount a coating. If you do not need to make an insulating layer, then the work will be greatly simplified. Also, the roof may already be ready (for example, concrete), but in need of additional finishing.

Important! When choosing a material, it is worth considering the angle of inclination of the roof. For roofing material, the best option is an angle of up to 5 degrees, for slate - no more than 25-35, corrugated board is laid on a roof with a slope of up to 8 degrees, and a metal tile can be used on a slope of up to 30 degrees.

All work must be performed only on condition of sunny weather. It is best to read the forecast for at least a week and choose warmer days.

Concrete roof finishing

Even if the garage already has a concrete roof, it must undergo special preparation before the new roofing material is laid. In general, the process begins precisely from this stage and ends with the laying of a new coating.

Training

Step 1. old coating with concrete slab, if any, will have to be removed completely. This is done with the help of improvised means - for example, shovels, chisels, etc.

Step 2 concrete surface inspected - its condition should be good before further finishing. It is tapped with a hammer - everything that exfoliates in the process must be removed.

Step 3 All small cracks are sealed with cement milk (or liquid glass), which is applied with an ordinary wide brush. Wide cracks can be repaired mounting foam, the excess of which is then cut off with a sharp knife.

Step 4 Uneven base is leveled cement mortar. It is applied to the surface and leveled using the rule. Further cement layer dries up.

Step 5 The cemented surface after drying is treated with a deeply penetrating primer. It is applied by roller or sprayer in an even layer.

Step 6 When the primer dries, the surface is covered with bituminous mastic.

Roofing work on a concrete roof

Step 1. Work on laying roofing material on the roof begins with raising the rolls of material to the roof surface. Next, one of the rolls is placed in the corner of the roof and the bituminous mastic applied to the base is heated using a gas burner.

Step 2 A roll of roofing material without sprinkling with the help of a metal hook, as the mastic is heated, gently unfolds. The flame of the burner is also directed to the lower part of the rolled material. Thus, the entire roof is closed, individual strips of material are laid overlapping each other.

Step 3 The top layer of material that already has powder on the surface is laid. To begin with, the required dimensions of the segments are measured. For ease of use, they are rolled up.

Step 4 Laying the top layer of material should be carried out on the bottom so that the seams overlap each other, that is, with an offset. Laying starts from the bottom of the roof slope.

Step 5 And it's on the move again gas-burner. The previously laid lower layer of material is heated.

Step 6 After the bottom layer is well warmed up, the heating and rolling of the roll with sprinkles begins. Rolling is also carried out using a hook.

The same metal hook is used

Step 7 The material laid in this way is sprayed with water to speed up the cooling process. Also, a layer of water will prevent the crumbs on the surface of the coating from sticking to hands and tools.

Step 8 The material is pressed against the surface of the roof with patting movements using a wooden board wrapped in cloth.

Step 9 The entire roof is closed in the same way. The individual coating strips are overlapped.

Step 10 The sides of the roof are also covered with roofing material.

The process of finishing the roof of the garage with corrugated board

Quite often, corrugated board is used as a roofing during the construction of a garage. This strong and durable material will serve faithfully if laid correctly.

Training

Step 1. The roof is being prepared - if necessary, a waterproofing layer is laid. Next, the installation of supports for the material begins - bars of 50x50 mm are laid on the base, and boards of 40x15 mm are laid across them.

Step 2 The bars are aligned strictly according to the level, and the cross-beam boards are also aligned.

Step 3 Longitudinal bars are attached to the base of the roof with frame bolts.

Step 4 The transverse boards are fixed with self-tapping screws to the bars - two pieces at the edges, and one at a time in the middle of the boards.

Step 5 Along the perimeter of a kind of crate, planks are nailed. Their upper part should be flush with the cross-beam boards. You can start laying corrugated board.

Installation of corrugated board

Step 1. Sheets of corrugated board rise to the roof, stacked on the crate and leveled. Separate sheets overlapped in 2 waves. For the installation of the roof, it is better to use sheets of such a size as to immediately cover the roof slope from edge to edge.

Step 2 At the exit of the garage pipe, it is required to cut the material so that a hole for the chimney is formed. The easiest way is to cut a hole in the whole sheet, and then put the sheet on the pipe.

Step 3 Sheets of corrugated board will be screwed with self-tapping screws. For convenience, you can mark up along a string evenly stretched from one edge of the roof to the other. Marking is applied with a marker. The markings should be straight along the cross-beam boards.

Step 4 Special roofing screws with a rubber washer-gasket are screwed in. Along the perimeter of the sheets, their pitch is 40-50 cm, and along the rest of the sheet, according to the marking, they are screwed through one corrugation.

Step 5 The side part of the roof can be finished with roofing felt, reinforced on bituminous mastic, or closed with metal shields of the desired height.

Step 6 Shields are fixed with roofing screws, and the joints between them and the roof are smeared with bituminous mastic.

Step 7 For the first bituminous layer fabric strips are glued, which are then again smeared with bitumen.

Step 8 The joint between the pipe and the corrugated board is sealed with a waterproofing material or sealant.

What material to use for the roof of the garage? Here the owner himself will have to decide in accordance with his wishes and budget. It is also important to take into account the features of each coating. But of the above two main materials, it is better to use corrugated board - it will be more reliable and durable for the roof than roofing material.

In which the car will remain, erected, a completely logical question arises - how to close the roof of the garage so that precipitation does not get inside the room, and heat does not come out in winter. As an overlap, various materials can be used - sheet or roll. Let's try to figure out the better to block the roof of the garage.

People choose materials for roofing works in the garage based on the following criteria:

  • the price of building materials for the roof;
  • quality;
  • a matter of taste.

Some people prefer to do gable roof so that you can make a small attic. Others are inclined to believe that a shed roof will be simpler and cheaper. Someone decides that the mansard roof on the garage is ideal, so to speak, a living room above their own garage.

Note! Not all people choose to do mansard roof, since for its device you will need to spend a considerable amount of finance, effort and time. But, if you still decide on such a project, then it will be possible to create a small, but cozy and completely suitable room for recreation and even for living in it above the garage.

Most inexpensive option how to cover the roof - to perform a roof with one slope. In this case, it is quite easy to install roof structure, which can then be covered with tar or slate sheets can be fixed on it.

How to choose materials

Today, construction companies whose products can be found in construction markets and hypermarkets offer a wide range of various materials, both those that have long been common, and those that are still little known. Among these products are asbestos slate, popular because of their low price, ondulin, corrugated board, metal tiles, roll materials and much more.

Covering a garage roof with these materials is easy and often inexpensive. Of course, when buying a metal tile, you will notice that its price is much higher than slate, but the roof from it will be much stronger and more durable. In addition, most of the work with the roof of such materials can be done by hand.

How to build a roof structure

The following materials can be used as a filler:

  1. Pulverized composition (dust of slag, gypsum, limestone).
  2. Fibers (asbestos and related materials).
  3. Combination of the first two types.

Note! Before the mixture is applied to the crate, the bars should be cleaned and then oiled. If work is carried out with a crate of boards, any cracks and crevices are first eliminated in it, and the bitumen is heated immediately before work begins. In this case, the soil is applied first across the fibers of the boards or beams, and only then along.

When the soil dries out, the crate is covered with mastic, then the roofing material is overlapped. The width of the overlap should be about 15 cm. So that bubbles do not appear and the roofing material does not let water through, it must be carefully smoothed everywhere.

Roof covering with slate

Covering a garage roof with slate sheets is quick and easy. For laying slate, the crate should be made of boards 25 × 100 mm; if beams are used, then lumber with a section of 50 × 50 or 60 × 60 mm can be used. The crate is covered with a layer polyethylene film overlapped - this will prevent the roof from leaking in the future.

How to fix the slate? For its installation are used slate nails. The first sheet of slate is laid in the bottom row, joining the bottom of the sheet with the edge of the crate. The next sheet is overlapped on the side on the first one, closing one or two waves. In this case, the first sheet is fastened with nails only from the edge of the roof. Then the seam of the sheets is fixed with nails, and the second edge of the sheet is not fixed again - and so on until the end of the row. The top sheets are laid on top of the bottom row with an overlap of 12–14 cm. If the roof is gable, then a ridge is installed on top.

Note! Nails are driven into upper part waves. In order not to split the sheet from impact, you can take a drill with you to the roof, just fix it well on the roof so that it does not break if it falls.

Roof covering with ondulin

Sometimes people confuse ondulin with slate, and this is not surprising, since they are similar in shape, which cannot be said about the composition. Ondulin is soft, so in order to cover the garage with it, you must first cover the crate OSB sheets, otherwise it will bend under the pressure of snow (and from its own mass). When installing ondulin, fastening is done with special nails in each wave.

Roof covering with corrugated board

Here, a method of covering the roof based on corrugated board will be considered, but others can be used instead of this material, for example, metal tiles.

What is corrugated board? it sheet material profile section, having a profile width of up to 20 mm, with a coating-protection of zinc and polymers. Such a material has excellent rigidity required for roofing and can cope with rain loads.

Covering the garage roof with corrugated board is also easy. It is important to remember for yourself a number of rules that guide experienced roofers:

  1. If the roof slope is less than 14 °, then the overlap of the sheets is 20 cm or more, and the seams are sealed with silicone.
  2. With a slope of up to 30 °, the overlap is from 15 to 20 cm.
  3. Roofs with a slope greater than 30° have an overlap of sheets from 10 to 15 cm.

Fasten the corrugated board as follows. It is laid on the crate and fastened with screws to the bottom of the wave. For this, not ordinary metal screws are used, but special ones with a wide hat and a neoprene gasket, as well as a sharp drill at the tip. One sheet may require about 20 screws, or even more.

Note! When arranging a roof from corrugated board, one should not forget to make vapor and waterproofing, as well as leave a small gap through which the garage roof will be ventilated.

The crate, created for corrugated board, is typed in increments that will allow you to attach sheets of metal to it clearly along the waves. For a roof whose slope is not higher than 15 °, do solid crate. A roof with a large slope can have a crate in increments of 35–50 cm.
