Do-it-yourself step-by-step replacement of the window sill with a plastic one. Replacing a window sill is a simple job How to properly replace a plastic window sill

Moreover, this same advantage implies another useful feature - ease of dismantling the window sill. With proper skill and the presence of a tool, the whole process takes from several minutes to half an hour.

Why might this be needed?

There may be several reasons for dismantling a plastic window sill. In any case, such a need arises when it is necessary to replace the window sill. And here there are already many more options. Sometimes you need to replace a broken window sill, sometimes the problem is in a damaged surface, which is unprofitable to restore, but it is much easier to replace it together with the window sill. It is also often just a need to change the visual design of the window and window sill in particular, or even complete replacement both windows and windowsills. In all these cases, it is necessary to dismantle the plastic window sill.

Training

In order to remove the plastic window sill, you need a small amount of tool. Basically, in order to remove the slopes, if they are made of plastic panels, a spatula is enough and, if necessary, a screwdriver. For plaster slopes, chisels and a hammer (or a puncher with a chisel) are sometimes needed. If you do not have a screwdriver, you can just as well use a regular Phillips screwdriver. A screwdriver (or screwdriver) will be needed if some of the slope parts are fixed with self-tapping screws or if the window sill itself was fixed with self-tapping screws.

How to remove a plastic window sill

The dismantling of plastic window sills is carried out starting from the slopes. The fact is that structurally the slopes are attached after the window sill, so they also partially fix it.

The process of removing plastic slopes is simple. To begin with, the adhesive residues are removed from the seams and joints with a spatula, after which the corner is carefully removed. Behind him, the panel itself is also carefully pulled out. If the slopes are plastered, and the window sill enters the wall, it is necessary to hollow out the excess so that the window sill can be removed without problems.

After that, you can proceed to the window sill board. How to remove the plastic window sill? Very simple. When it is freed from all sides of the remnants of glue, slopes and other things, you just need to pull it up. Since it is attached from below with mounting foam, this should not be difficult. After it is torn off with the first jerk, it can be removed without problems.

How to remove a plastic window sill video

For clarity of solving the question “how to remove a plastic window sill?”, You can also watch a video on the topic “how to remove a plastic window sill video” here. In it, clearly and with an example, it will be possible to see the actual process and clarify various details. Otherwise, if you have any questions, we recommend that you consult with specialists. Or make it even easier - entrust the work to professionals.

The window sill is an integral part of the window. Quite rare, but it has to be changed. The work is simple, you can do it yourself. In order not to damage the frame and walls in the process, you must carefully be aware of how to change the window sill on a plastic window. This will be discussed below.

This may be due to:

  • natural wear and tear - the window was replaced without replacing the window sill;
  • surface damage;
  • changes in the interior of the room, as a result of which a simple metal or polyvinyl chloride is changed to artificial or a natural stone;
  • installations near the refrigerator window or pieces of furniture, and the window sill, either wide or long, interferes;
  • the appearance of drafts from under it - insulation is required;
  • shifts cast iron radiators heating on narrower, aluminum as a result of which air convection is difficult.

Tools and materials

Before starting work, it is always necessary to prepare a set of tools and materials:

  • window sill, to replace the old one (metal, artificial and natural stone, natural wood, PVC, MDF);
  • mounting foam;
  • perforated metal tape;
  • dry plaster mixture(if window slopes plastered);
  • self-tapping screws;
  • knife with replaceable blades;
  • hacksaw for metal;
  • hacksaw for plastic (when installing their PVC window sill);
  • perforator (you can beat off the plaster manually, which will take a little longer);
  • a hammer;
  • mallet (rubber mallet);
  • bit;
  • chisel (for old wooden window sills);
  • screwdriver (you can get by with a simple Phillips screwdriver);
  • grinder with a circle for cutting concrete (for plaster based on a cement-sand mixture);
  • putty knife;
  • several 3-liter cans of water as weights.

From the above list, perhaps not everything will come in handy, but it is better to have a tool in stock than to look for it for several hours later.

Preparatory work

Any instruction on how to dismantle the window sill on a plastic window begins with the point about the need to disassemble the slopes (the surface of the window sill at the edges is always slightly under them). Slopes can be monolithic (plaster) or removable (panel).

Work on the release of the window sill from the plaster is carried out in the following order:

  1. Wallpaper near the window sill to a height of up to 1 m and a width of up to 30 cm is peeled off from the wall and wrapped (you can make a cut with a knife to make it more convenient to wrap) - the technology for removing tapestries is considered in the work: "", paragraph 5.1. "Cleaning the walls from wallpaper." wallpaper it is necessary to start removing from the corner, helping with a spatula;
  2. Concrete plaster is cut with a grinder at a distance of 10-15 cm from the surface of the window sill to a depth of 30-50 mm (the standard distance at which the window sill enters the wall). The frame is protected from accidental contact with the circle with a spatula (there is no need to make an incision for gypsum plaster);
  3. The plaster between the window sill and the cut is knocked out with a hammer and a chisel (chisel).

The dismantling of the panels is much easier (the installation diagram is shown in the photo):

  1. Filmed decorative corners(builders sometimes call them architraves). To do this, with a corner of the spatula along the entire length of the casing, on both sides, the glue or sealant on which it was mounted is removed;
  2. A screwdriver or a Phillips screwdriver unscrews the screws with which the panel is attached to the wall bar;
  3. Silicone (liquid plastic sealant) is cut with a knife, covering the gaps between the slope and window elements: window sill, frame and ceiling slope;
  4. By moving towards itself and up and down, the panel slope is removed from the groove;
  5. With a knife, mounting foam is removed from the surface of the window sill, near the frame.

Dismantling the window sill

Solving the problem of how to remove a window sill from a plastic window inside an apartment begins with determining the type of window sill: wooden, concrete or PVC - each of them has its own methods and dismantling technologies.

Wooden

Most surprises await repairmen (professionals - the same) when disassembling a wooden window sill. Only it can be fastened in several ways that are inaccessible to window sills made of other materials:

  • with partial pinching by the window frame and mechanical fastening through the frame profile from above or outside, from the street side;
  • on glue;
  • on support dies and glue;
  • on metal brackets.

In this regard, there are several methods for dismantling a wooden window sill.

The window sill is removed most easily from metal brackets. A screwdriver or a Phillips screwdriver unscrews the screws with which it is screwed to the brackets. After that, the tree is easily removed from the grooves in the wall and frame.

In all other cases the window sill is torn off from the lower plane of the window opening with a crowbar or hammer - tamping is performed along the entire length. Here you need to be especially careful and attentive. A sharp movement can severely damage the frame if self-tapping screws are screwed in (it is impossible to know for sure).

Therefore, when detached from the glue or mounting foam, the window sill should rise by only 1-3 cm. After that, loosening it from side to side, you must try to remove it. If there are no screws, the attempt will be successful.

Otherwise, you will have to look for them. To do this, first remove the sealing gum from inside window. If there are no hardware under it, the ebb is dismantled (sometimes a self-tapping screw is screwed through the ebb, which does not require disassembly) to get to the window sill attachment.

Concrete

How to remove the window sill from a plastic window, if it is monolithic, from cement-sand mortar? Experienced experts advise in such cases to first protect the furniture from dust - take it to the next room or close it. plastic wrap. All lights are also closed.

There are several ways to remove the solution:

  • perforator;
  • Cut the strips with a grinder and then knock them out with a hammer and chisel;
  • Work only with a hammer and chisel. The least dusty option, but energy-intensive. At the same time, it will take a long time to remove the cement window sill without the use of power tools.

Plastic

There are two ways to remove their PVC window sill:

  • Gentle, when a mounting foam is sawn from the bottom of the plastic with a knife or a blade from a hacksaw for metal, after which the window sill is removed in complete safety. If necessary, it can be re-installed;
  • Destructive - hands or a crowbar PVC rises up. This option does not provide for the preservation of the window sill. It can break out in pieces until the window opening is completely freed from the old window sill.

How to put it in place

The concept of how to replace the window sill at a plastic window on your own includes not only its dismantling, but also its installation. Technological process consists of several operations:

  1. preparation of the lower base of the window opening;
  2. fitting (cutting protrusions);
  3. installation work;
  4. slope sealing.

Preparation of the lower base of the window opening

Before installing a new window sill, it is necessary to clean the grooves in the walls from the remnants of foam and dirt, and the base of the opening from various gaskets, mortar, mounting foam. As a result of the work done, only the material from which the wall is composed should be on the surface of the opening.

If there is a distance of several centimeters between the wall and the frame, allowing you to foam the space between the base of the opening and the window sill, the preparation work is completed. If not, then the wall under the window sill is ditched: the width of the groove is up to 7.0 cm, the depth is 2.0-3.0 cm, to form a foam joint.

At the same time, it is desirable to replace the foam inside the opening, under the frame. These works are carried out in order to insulate the window.

Cutting the canvas

The canvas of the new window sill is sold in a rectangular shape. It is necessary to install in the form of the letter "T" with a wide leg - for entering under the slopes and behind part of the wall inside the room. In addition, the material must also be cut in the longitudinal direction so that the width of the window sill ensures that the radiators installed under the window overlap.

Attention: window installers often allow for a barely noticeable defect. For example, the window may not be installed parallel to the wall. In this case, when cutting the window sill, it is necessary to cut a little obliquely in order to parallel the wall and the edge of the window sill.

When calculating the size of the window sill, you should adhere to the following rules:

  • the window sill should enter the groove of the wall by 20-30 mm;
  • the protrusion over the slope can be of any length, but it is necessary to overlap the plastic panel with a corner;
  • the cross cut must be at the same angle as the slope with respect to the frame.

Window sill installation

Installation instructions for the window sill provide for work in the following order:

  • The window sill is pressed with its upper cut edge close to the window support profile (frame);
  • The window sill canvas with the help of linings (mounting wedges) is adjusted so that the plane has a slope towards the room of 2-3 mm (the operation is necessary so that water does not collect on the window sill near the frame) and, at the same time, a very tight contact is made with the end of the frame. The length of the spacers is chosen so that 8.0-10.0 cm remains to the inner plane of the wall;
  • After installing the wedges, the window sill sheet is set aside in order to restore the insulation seam under the frame;
  • A vapor barrier tape is installed;
  • When the foam expands a little, professionals call this moment “dry to the touch”, a window sill is inserted;
  • A small load (a 3-liter can of water) is placed on its plane - in this way a snug fit is achieved upper plane window sill to the stand profile;
  • After 15-20 minutes, foam is applied under the window sill in the area of the frame along its entire length, which, when expanded, will firmly press the window sill to the frame;
  • After 25-35 minutes, an additional 7-10 kg of oppression is placed on the windowsill;
  • The entire space under the window sills is foamed. Considering that the foam expands too much, it is necessary to leave clean 3-4 cm from the edge of the wall;
  • If it is planned to strengthen the window sill with perforated tape, it is installed after the foam has dried.

Slope termination

Self-sealing of slopes is possible after complete curing of the foam. Work is carried out in the reverse order of removal, in the order:

  1. the panel starts at an angle behind the end of the frame;
  2. a small amount of mounting foam is added near the frame between the wall and the panel;
  3. the panel is tightly pressed against the rail attached to the wall and fastened to it with a self-tapping screw;
  4. after 2-3 hours, the joints of the panel with window elements (window sill, frame, upper slope) are sealed with liquid plastic sealant;
  5. glued corner.

Conclusion

At plastic windows many benefits. Another thing that was not mentioned anywhere is the ease and simplicity of dismantling the window sill. It does not require experience and special knowledge. Enough attention and observance of the simplest rules. At the same time, regardless of where the window is located - a room, a balcony or a loggia - the methods for removing the window sill canvas are the same.

Installation is also simple - on mounting foam, although experts can offer several technologies. Experience has shown that foam performs its functions admirably. Therefore, looking for something else does not make sense.

The video below will help to consolidate the above.

Repair cannot be done once and for all. Operation implies wear and tear and loss of functionality of some interior parts. So it is with plastic windows. Over time, they will definitely require minor restoration or replacement of some elements - fittings, insulating material, windowsill. The latter is quite capable of changing at home with your own hands. You will need a certain set of tools and knowledge of the nuances of each stage of work.

When is window sill replacement required?

As a rule, the window sill is subject to replacement when installing a new double-glazed window. But in the process of use, they can be damaged, chips, scratches, indelible stains appear. The most unstable PVC window sills in this regard. Experts advise either to initially purchase a product from quality material with high resistance to mechanical damage, or subsequently replace it yourself. Reinstallation is necessary in the following cases:

  1. 1. Damage that reduces the overall attractiveness of the interior.
  2. 2. Cracking, the appearance of severe chips, any violation of the integrity, which subsequently leads to the unusability of the canvas.
  3. 3. Deterioration of sealing (penetration of cold and moisture) and the threat of the structure falling out.
  4. 4. Change of design of the entire interior of the room.
  5. 5. Expansion of the functional properties of the window sill. It is used as desk, sofa, shelf in the bathroom, kitchen worktop, dressing table etc.

In some cases, replacement is not possible. In old houses, carpentry structures are a single unit - a window sill and a window. Changing one element will destroy the integrity of the entire binding. Only a specialist can determine this.

If the window sill serves as the basis for the window block, replacement is also not possible. Otherwise, this will provoke distortions and subsidence of the entire binding.

Materials for the new design

The material for the manufacture of the window sill is chosen depending on the model, it must correspond to the overall design of the room and the purpose. Additionally, color, configuration, price and the generally permissible load on the walls are taken into account. The most popular materials:

  1. 1. Plastic - budget, affordable, long service life, choice of color and model, environmental friendliness. The material is chosen of high quality, from a trusted manufacturer with good technical specifications. Another plus is that replacing a plastic window sill is not difficult and is available even to those who do not have construction skills.
  2. 2. Wood is a material that brings an atmosphere of warmth and comfort into the interior, a pleasant texture, an eco-friendly, natural pattern. Modern processing allows you to protect wood from decay, damage as a result of high humidity, deformation and other things. If the price of a solid wood window sill is high enough, MDF or chipboard will serve as a replacement. In the manufacture of such material, the canvas is laminated.
  3. 3. Artificial or natural stone - brings solidity and sophistication to the interior, but has a heavy structure and is not always environmentally friendly.

When choosing a material and design, it is important to observe the parameters: the width depends on the purpose, the length is 20 cm more than the window opening.

Instructions for replacing the plastic window sill

It is not difficult to change the plastic window sill with your own hands, the main thing is to follow certain instructions step by step:

  • preparing or acquiring suitable tools;
  • dismantling of the previous structure;
  • installing a new model.

According to the step by step technology there is not only a replacement of the window sill made of plastic, but also of any other materials. The main thing is to be extremely careful and cautious.

Applicable tools

All required tools are prepared in advance. This will allow you not to be distracted by the search for what you need and save time. For work you will need the following:

  • chisel;
  • board of small section;
  • a hammer;
  • roulette;
  • paint that matches the color of the slopes;
  • drill or perforator;
  • silicone sealant;
  • assembly knife;
  • level;
  • sandpaper;
  • assembly foam.

To carry out the work, you will not need a lot of mounting foam, so you should not buy a special gun, an ordinary can will be enough.

Dismantling of the previous structure

This stage is the most energy-consuming and requires the utmost accuracy. Work is carried out according to the scheme:

  1. 1. On the sides of the window sill, along the entire length of the slope, a niche about 10 cm deep is knocked out. A perforator is used as a tool.
  2. 2. The structure is knocked out with a hammer and sharply lifted in one motion.
  3. 3. The window sill is carefully removed from the niche.
  4. 4. Clean the resulting space from debris, dust, old mortar.

If there is no puncher available or there are no skills in handling it, the canvas is carefully knocked out using a chisel. The work will require a lot of time, effort and patience.

Installing a new window sill

Just pulling out the old canvas and inserting a new one into the resulting niche is not enough. It is necessary to follow a certain sequence of actions step by step:

Stages Actions taken Notes
1 From the side of the ends and slopes, they measure and cut out the excess, adjusting the canvas as much as possible to the size of the window opening. For the template use the old window sill
2 All edges are treated with an antiseptic to protect against moisture and damage. This is necessary procedure, if wood and its derivatives (chipboard, MDF) are selected as the material
3 If the height of the new canvas is less or greater than the old one, a cement screed is made to even out the irregularities.
4 Close up all cracks and gaps in the wall openings adjacent to the window sill. The material used is putty or cement.
5 To remove voids at the point of contact of the future window sill with the window leaf, a sealant is applied
6 Install a support for the structure in the form of boards of small section (bars)
7 Check horizontal level
8 A window sill sheet is laid on the bars. Mark the level of its position
9 Load on plate
10 Fill all voids with mounting foam, including the edge bent inward under the canvas
11 A technical pause is observed so that the foam (or mortar) hardens and the structure shrinks. Pause time is 24 hours
12 When applying the foam, remove its excess. To do this, use a mounting knife
13 When applying cement, grind irregularities. Fine-grained sandpaper is used as a tool
14 Remove the protective film from the surface of the canvas
15 Paint or plaster slopes

Additional nuances

Professionals in replacing plastic window sills offer a few additional tips:

  1. 1. Carry out a thorough moistening with water bottom side canvases and bases of the cement screed of the window opening. This is done to speed up the process of polymerization of the mounting foam, which occurs only under conditions of high humidity. Moisturize with a spray bottle.
  2. 2. Do not apply too much foam under the windowsill. The surface is filled with strips, making sufficient gaps. This saves sealing material and prevents undermining the structure when the foam "swells" and increases in volume.
  3. 3. If the old window sill was made of plastic, you will need a small amount of tools: a spatula and a screwdriver. Acquire full set not necessary.
  4. 4. If it is impossible to get the canvas under window pane and it is not always worth ditching walls into slopes. To facilitate the task, the plate is adjusted to the dimensions with jewelry precision. The places of contact with the walls and the window are treated with a colorless silicone sealant.
  5. 5. You can not neglect the surface treatment under the new canvas with an antiseptic. This will provide additional moisture protection.

Replacing a plastic window sill with your own hands is not very difficult. It is enough to choose the right design, follow the rules for dismantling and installation step by step, stock up on tools and consumables. In addition, accuracy, patience and a little time are required. It is possible to carry out the procedure in 2-3 days. If the material chosen is not plastic, it will take more time and effort. Additional recommendation will be regular and proper care of the surface of the window sill.

PVC window may include various slopes: from drywall, plastic, cement.

If it is necessary to dismantle the slope from the cement mortar, you will need to additionally use a chisel or puncher.

If you want to dismantle the slopes of drywall, you must first remove the paint and find the fasteners. As a rule, such an element is fixed with screws, which should be unscrewed with a screwdriver or a puncher, and then the slope itself should be pulled out and the mounting foam removed. The plastic slope is removed in the same way as from drywall.

Before proceeding with the removal of the old slope, it is necessary to remove the double-glazed window, otherwise it can be damaged.

Window sill installation

It is important to fit well

Do not assume that in order to replace the window sill, it is enough just to remove the old window sill and insert a new one in its place. There are some rules for preparing this niche and the product itself. These rules are binding, so following them is very important.

Scheme of installation of a plastic window sill

So, to install a new window sill, you need to follow this sequence:

  1. To fit the window sill into the window opening as accurately as possible, you need to cut out the extra parts in the place where the window sill will be installed, given its size. Also check the groove itself where the canvas will be installed. Measure all dimensions to prepare a new canvas. Not only the general appearance, but also structural strength, as well as the functionality of the window sill. If the old window sill remains intact, it can be used as a template to make a new canvas, if the dimensions of the previous window sill suited you. You can cut a new canvas with a jigsaw or a saw. It is important that defects and cracks do not form during cutting, so do not rest heavily on the window sill.
  2. When installing a window sill made of wood, all cut edges from the ends must be processed antiseptic to protect the material from mold and reduce moisture permeability.
  3. Prepare the opening itself, on which the window sill will be installed. If the height of the purchased window sill is less than that of the old one, a cement screed must be made on a horizontal base. If the window sill is thicker, the niche needs to be deepened.
  4. If during the work gaps and cracks have formed in the walls that are adjacent to the installation site, they must be repaired. To do this, use the usual putty or cement mortar.
  5. Application of sealant In the place where the window sill will adjoin the frame, the entire width of the window opening must be applied silicone sealant. Thus, you can achieve tightness and eliminate the formation of voids that contribute to the penetration of cold into your house or apartment.
  6. In the opening you need to put the prepared boards. They will serve as a support for the new window sill and take on the main load.
  7. Using a level, check the levelness of the entire structure. Defects need to be corrected, making everything perfectly even.
  8. Now install the window sill plate on the prepared boards.
  9. Level check Use the level again to make sure the installation is correct.
  10. Put some weight on the windowsill. It can be books, a heavy box, water bottles, or something that will be at hand.
  11. Take mounting foam and blow all the side and rear strobes with it. If a plastic structure is installed, some manufacturers add special profiles to the kit, thanks to which the process of installing a new window sill will become even easier.
  12. Foaming The edge under the window sill that protrudes must be sealed with cement mortar or foam to fix it.
  13. Now take a technical break, a day long, so that the foam or solution is completely frozen.
  14. If the gaps were treated with cement mortar, the surface must be sanded with a grater or fine sandpaper.
  15. Now it remains only to protect the ends of the window sill with a plug and remove the protective coating from the canvas.
  16. To give the window a natural and aesthetic look, or to paint.

Cargo

It should also be noted that the window sill should not prevent the heat from the radiator from rising up and spreading around the apartment, so the protrusion is recommended to be made from 6 to 8 cm. Now your window sill is ready!

Preparation for dismantling

How to repair a window sill

Restoration of a concrete window sill is a set of works to eliminate damage and restore the integrity of the object. When updating windows, few people now resort to restoring wooden frames. Simply dismantle and install them plastic double-glazed windows, but you can still fight for the window sills and not dismantle them, but restore them. Solid advantage concrete products- they are much stronger than common ones plastic structures. In addition, avoiding the dismantling of the window sill, you can save cash. The only condition is that the window sill must be intact (not cracked).

Training

Before you begin, you need to clear the room of things and furniture, and, if possible, cover all surfaces with a film or tarpaulin, leaving space for access to the workplace. This stage is quite dusty, therefore, the fewer items left in the room, the easier it will be to clean up after work is completed.

It is better to cover the floor with a film in several layers. In this case, it will be possible to wrap all construction debris in the top layer and take it out of the room.

You also need to make sure that there is an electrical supply in the room. Similar work is done using tools that work from the network.

How to make do-it-yourself plastic slopes

For professionals, it takes an average of two to two and a half hours to install window slopes, so if you try, you can do it yourself in three to four hours. To do this work yourself, you need to familiarize yourself with the rules of plastic. Without slopes, the window will have an unfinished and unattractive appearance. Mounting plates and protruding pieces of mounting foam are visible to the naked eye. Remember that you can start work only a day after installing the window. Everything should dry well.

The window should be tightly tightened with a film to avoid damage when installing slopes.

A day after installing the plastic window, you can proceed with the installation of slopes, which will subsequently hide the mounting plates and mounting foam and give the window a neat look.

The first step in installation is carefully leveling the entire opening. You need to align both horizontally and vertically. To do this, you will need mounting foam. Frost resistant is best. The voids formed are filled mineral wool. This preparation will protect the plastic from destruction. Protects from moisture. This is moisture insulation and sound insulation with your own hands. Excess foam is removed after 20 minutes

The second step is to fix the wooden bars along the full perimeter of the opening, the bars of the required length are measured and cut. Then you need to drill holes in them for self-tapping screws. For fasteners, self-tapping screws 95 mm long are used. Reiki should be placed so that they do not protrude beyond the level of the walls. Use a level to get the perfect vertical. The rail is attached directly to the wall with a drill or puncher.

The third step is the fastening of the U-shaped element to the bar (a seamless plastic profile). The starting profile is stuffed along the outer edge of the window. Self-tapping screws are used for its fastening. It is better to take self-tapping screws 15-20 mm and fasten at a distance of 35-40 cm from each other. When installing the profile, the joint of the inner walls must be made without a gap. Measure the width of the window from the right to the left slope. Further, a U-shaped profile is cut off in size with a hacksaw or grinder. The starting profile is screwed to the plastic frame with five self-tapping screws. The starting strip should fit as closely as possible to the window.

A U-shaped plastic profile, called the starting one, is fastened with self-tapping screws to the previously screwed wooden bars.

All dirty work done. At this stage, you can release the window from the protective film and proceed to the next step.

The fourth step is the F-strip (a strip of plastic used when). The groove of this strip is placed opposite the already installed U-shaped profile. But before that, it must be properly cut. For this, markings are applied along the height of the plastic slope, and the excess part is removed. After the F strip is stuffed, an overlap is formed everywhere. Given this overlap, you need to leave a small margin when cutting. At the end of all work, the overlap is cut off. The strip is attached to wooden lath via construction stapler. Fastening is carried out by the part of the F-shaped end closest to the tree. Everything is ready. An F-shaped strip of plastic will cover the defective area, hide the entire internal unsightly picture from the eyes.

The fifth step is warming. You should install the plastic in the grooves and at the same time lay layers of cotton wool. plastic panel is placed in the starting strip, laid with cotton wool and fixed in the F-strip. If you still notice that in some place the plastic joints do not fit perfectly, ordinary silicone will help you. white color. Cover the gaps with it.

This is the detailed step by step program your actions. As you can see, there is nothing daunting in this work. However, there are a number of difficulties that may be encountered in carrying out this work.

When to replace an old window sill

Broken old window sill

Nothing lasts forever, we all know that, so from time to time any thing needs either repair or replacement. There are many reasons for that. What are the reasons for replacing the window sill? Here are a few of them:

  1. Damage has formed on the surface of the coating, reducing the overall attractiveness of the window sill. The aesthetic appearance is lost in the presence of small scratches, cracks, chips and various kinds of deformations when the window sills are made of wood.
  2. There are violations of the integrity of the product - deep chips, large cracks, due to which the window sill can collapse at any time. Often the window sill serves us as an additional shelf where we usually put our flowerpots, seedlings or other things. Therefore, when such deep damage is formed, its replacement is mandatory.
  3. Crumbling of the wall adjacent to the window sill or complete destruction of the coating itself. Often this leads to the fact that the window sill can fall at the most inopportune moment. Moreover, the quality of sealing in this case is significantly degraded, which allows cold air from outside to freely penetrate into the room. This is especially unpleasant in the winter.
  4. The last reason is the reorganization of the entire space and the change overall design your room, in which the old window sill may not fit. It may also be that you just need a larger window sill - for various purposes.

Too narrow

Whatever the reason, the window sill needs to be changed, even if you are just tired of it. Is it possible, if desired, to perform all the work on the dismantling and installation of the window sill on my own? You will learn the answer further, having familiarized yourself with the technology of installing a window sill. But before you mount it, you should decide what material the future window sill will be made of. Let's look at some of them.

The answer is simple - of course yes, but for this you need to follow the instructions clearly.

Preparation for dismantling

Before proceeding directly to dismantling, it is necessary to prepare the tools that will be useful to us, and of course, the room itself. And also be sure to determine the material of this part of the structure, since the dismantling method used will depend on this.

Important! Window sills can be made of plastic - the most common), as well as wood or concrete. . Instruments:

Instruments:

  • Conventional and jackhammer.
  • Hacksaw.
  • Chisel.
  • Chisel.
  • Bulgarian (not always necessary).

Be extremely careful and careful, as repairs are like “jewelry” work that requires attention. Otherwise - you can destroy the walls or, even worse, be left without fingers. So, let's start solving the problem, namely, how to remove the plastic window sill.

Wooden

If you need to replace a window sill made of wood, use a crowbar and a hacksaw. Check how the part is attached. If against the wall, then to remove the window sill from the plastic window:

  1. Try to loosen the fastener by knocking it out a little with a hammer from below.
  2. Then you need to get the window sill.
  3. If this attempt is not successful, use a chisel and hammer.

Important! If you still can’t solve the problem, you can make cuts and then get the unusable part in parts.

Concrete

If you need to replace a concrete window sill, be prepared for the fact that there will be a lot of dust. To remove it, you will need a grinder and a hammer. However, if you do not have a grinder, you can replace it with a crowbar and a chisel. You need to remove it in exactly the same way as a structural element made of wood.

Plastic

If you have a question about how to remove a plastic window sill, there are two ways. Both are quite effective, but the first method is more destructive than the second.

  1. You need to peel off the plaster and remove the slopes.
  2. Then cut off the building foam with sharp knife or other object with a sharp blade.
  3. After these actions, it will be enough to pull the window sill a little, and it will be removed.

The second method, on the contrary, is based on the preservation of plaster and all slopes, but it will take more time and effort:

  1. You need to saw through the mounting foam under the windowsill.
  2. Then remove the liquid plastic near the slopes.
  3. After that, as in the first option, you can easily get the window sill.

When deciding how to remove the window sill from a plastic window, it will be appropriate to remember that when installing it at home, some important factors must be taken into account:

  1. The new product should be 10-20 centimeters longer than the width of the window unit. When installing part plastic model will be in the wall, and the protrusion of the board itself should be no less than 50-70 centimeters.
  2. Fasten the new surface during installation with mounting adhesive or special mortar.
  3. After a while, when everything dries up, put on special plugs on the edges of the window sill.
  4. If your window sill is not plastic, but, for example, made of wood or cement, you can try to remedy the situation without removing the part from the window unit. To do this, you will need a deep penetration liquid primer diluted with putty powder. After applying the solution, immediately smooth it over the surface with a spatula. This is a very reliable and effective tool, so in most cases the issue of removing defects can be solved without resorting to replacing the window sill.

So, if you carefully studied this article on how to remove a window sill from a plastic window, you definitely got information for yourself on how to solve this problem at home, and also learned several options in which it is not necessary to spend money on a replacement, because you can bring the old one back to life. We hope that you will take into account the above methods and recommendations, and henceforth, when you face a similar task, you will not have a question about how to remove the plastic window sill, because you already have enough knowledge. It remains only to learn how to correctly translate the information received into practice.

Sequence of work

Measures to replace the window sill

To complete the installation of a new window sill, you will have to carry out full complex events. As you know, planning leads to success.

Therefore, it is important to prepare everything in advance, familiarize yourself with the upcoming work and have an idea of \u200b\u200bwhat needs to be done. Let's look at the work that will need to be done in several stages:

  • preparation of tools for work;
  • dismantling of an unusable window sill;
  • installation of a new window sill.

As mentioned earlier, the easiest way to replace plastic products, this applies not only to window sills, but also to windows. If they are made of other materials, the sequence of the installation process will be the same, only now you need to pay more attention to accuracy in work. So, let's find out what materials you will need in the process.

Installation of window sills

Most models of modern window sills are installed using leveling beacons, spacers, etc. Sometimes auxiliary fasteners can be used additionally - corners and various brackets. Any window sills - plastic, wooden and stone should be installed by specialists. In some simple cases, it is allowed to install PVC models by people who have basic skills in working with modern building materials and tool:

If it is not possible to use two-component foam, it is necessary to load the window sill from above. This will prevent the conventional sealant from bending the web outward as it expands.

Dismantling PVC windows

This step is a little easier. In principle, it is quite possible to dismantle the plastic window with your own hands. But you need to know in advance about the features of such works. The fact is that unknowingly, you can ruin the plaster, which will change the size of the opening and its geometry. And this will lead to a number of problems during further installation.

The plastic window is removed as follows:

  1. The sash is removed from the frame.
  2. The double-glazed window itself is removed, which must first be carefully freed from sealing glazing beads.
  3. The accessories are removed.
  4. The box itself is dismantled from the opening.
  5. The tide is removed, the plastic slope is removed, the old window sill is removed.

The specialist performs the above steps in about 25 minutes. The advantage of working with a PVC profile is that it can be removed under any weather conditions, including in winter.

How to dismantle an old window

A window opening that has served you for a long time and which you decide to replace will not only violate the aesthetics of the entire room, but also pose a danger to the health of people living in the room. In such situations, you will definitely begin to think about how to dismantle the old window, since everyone understands that without this operation it will not be possible to install a new one. AT professional field This stage in the process of replacing windows is the most time-consuming.

Preparation for work

Before you start considering the dismantling technology itself, you should see how to properly prepare for dismantling. Since dismantling will require responsibility and seriousness from you, you cannot start it without preparation.

  1. During the dismantling of the window in the apartment, you should take precautionary measures household appliances, interior items and furniture and other valuable items. If possible, it is worth taking them out at all, and overall objects must be covered with plastic wrap. It is better to cover with polyethylene, because. it will be easiest to clean it up later. Even if you dismantle with the utmost care, you will not be able to carry out the entire dismantling without getting construction debris and dust. In this regard, it is required to approach responsibly the safety of valuable things.
  2. The immediate place of work must be covered plywood sheets. This is required to keep floor covering. If there are carpets or carpets in the room, then you need to take them out. The passage to the workplace should not be cluttered with furniture and other items that will interfere with the process.

Dismantling steps

Professionals will be able to dismantle the old window without any difficulties. You can also do all the work yourself. The main thing is to start work correctly and carry out dismantling consistently. You will have to dismantle the window in the following sequence:

  1. Remove window sashes;
  2. Saw the frame and impost;
  3. Remove the old frame;
  4. Dismantle the window sill and ebb;
  5. Window opening preparation: remove old insulation and clear the hole.

Let's look at the features of each stage separately.

How to remove window sashes

At this stage, difficulties usually do not arise. However, if the glasses are securely seated in the frame, then they do not need to be removed before removal. But when the glasses do not hold up too well, they must be removed before dismantling in order to avoid injury.

Frame sawing

To remove it, you need to cut it. To do this, make a few cuts on it with a regular saw. Of course, you can use the grinder with diamond disc or on concrete, but you will get much more dust

Here we draw attention to the fact that it is strictly forbidden to use a conventional metal disc, because. it may jam or burst during cutting, and this will lead to injury

The disc will not work on wood either.

Removing the old window frame

After you have made a few cuts, you can begin to dismantle it piece by piece. You can use a crowbar, a nail puller, a puncher with a spatula attachment, or other convenient means. The frame must be removed from the box without residue. Removing all its parts will ensure maximum fixation of the future window.

How to remove the ebb and window sill

Now let's look at the features of removing the old window sill. When it is made of wood, then you need to remove it in the same way as a wooden frame, that is, make a couple of cuts and pull it out in parts using some kind of tool.

If you have a concrete window sill installed, then the matter will be somewhat more complicated., because it will need to be broken with a jackhammer, and if it is not there, then you will have to work manually with a hammer or crowbar. You can also use a grinder with a disc for concrete surfaces. Also, when the concrete window sill has no defects and is in good condition, then you can leave it alone.

However, a plastic window sill will be ahead of a concrete one in its thermal insulation properties. In addition, the preservation of the old structure will lead to the fact that a gap is formed between it and the new window frame. Even if you apply a special mixture and a reinforcing mesh, it is unlikely that you will be able to completely get rid of cracks and crevices.

Preparing to install a new frame

First you need to clean the window opening from the dust and debris resulting from the dismantling, and you also need to remove the old insulation. After that, it will be possible to proceed with the direct installation of a new frame. As a rule, installing a new window will not require excessive labor from you. You just need to follow all the steps in sequence and everything will work out.

Dismantling the window sill step by step instructions

Every couple of years, a good owner thinks about redecorating the premises.

Great attention is paid to windows, because they are a source of light, protection from cold, heat, wind and moisture. A worn window needs to be replaced, and at the same time the window sill must be replaced

Also, the dismantling of the window sill is important when changing the design in the room or redesigning the room.

Preparation for dismantling

Before proceeding with the task, it is necessary to determine the material from which the product is made, since the method of dismantling the window sill directly depends on this. It could be a tree cement mortar or plastic. Moreover, it is much better to prepare the tools in advance, as well as the room in which the repair work will be carried out.

Tools you will need:

  • jackhammer;
  • hacksaw;
  • chisel;
  • chisel;
  • traditional hammer;
  • a knife with a strong sharp blade;
  • angle grinder (in exceptional cases).

Advice. Gloves must be used to avoid minor injuries.

Repair work requires the greatest attention, accuracy and caution. The slightest erroneous movement can lead to cracks, or even to the destruction of half of the wall

It is much better to remove a wooden window sill using a hacksaw and crowbar. First of all, it is necessary to verify the fastener option.

For example, if the product is fixed to the wall surface, the fasteners must be made weaker by hitting with a hammer from below. Then you can try to remove the window sill. If the attempt ended badly, a hammer and chisel will come to the rescue. In an exceptional case, you can make cuts, and then take out the pieces with a crowbar.

When dismantling wooden window sills, fiberglass-based wool may be found. It has detrimental properties for the respiratory tract.

Removing a concrete window sill will require a little considerable effort, and besides, when dismantling it, it is hardly possible to do without dust. It is removed with a jackhammer or angle grinder. In the absence of these tools, a traditional hammer, crowbar and chisel are used.

It looks like this workplace after careful removal, there are a couple of options for dismantling the plastic window sill. The first option is easier, but more destructive than the second. It is necessary to carefully remove the slopes and beat off the plaster, after which you can cut off the foam layer with a knife with a sharp blade. In most cases, after such a procedure, the product is removed with a slight jerk towards itself.

Another option involves the preservation of slopes and plaster, but is more time consuming. First, you should cut through the foam under the windowsill, remove the liquid plastic near the slopes, and then, as in the first version, pull the product.

Dismantling windowsill with my own hands simple and possible, even if you do not have great ability in construction work.

We hope that the material of the publication was useful to you.

  3. We cut the window sill.
  4. We put it to the window, put wooden blocks, align the plane horizontally and “grab” it with self-tapping screws at those points where it is possible to do it. Adjusting the window sill “by level”
  5. Wet the stone surfaces under the window sill lightly with water and blow everything with mounting foam.

Tip: in order for the foam not to “raise” the window sill during expansion, place something heavy on the surface of the product while it dries. These can be water bottles, bricks, etc.

Why you should choose plastic slopes

Main components correct installation slopes.

Slope is a very important element window construction. Therefore, the choice of material from which it will be made must be approached with all seriousness and responsibility. Plastic is only at first glance a fragile and fragile material. In fact, it is very strong and durable. A properly installed plastic slope will protect your home from moisture, cold and drafts, and will not fade in the sun. And it will last for many, many years. A modern person wants to make his home warm, comfortable and cozy. And the window plays one of the main roles in this matter.

Plastic has virtually no flaws. The only negative is that this work requires absolutely precise execution, there should not be any errors. Then plastic slopes will serve you faithfully for a long time, protecting your house from blowing.

The main tools needed for the installation of plastic slopes.

Necessary materials for independent:

  • plastic panel (P-shaped plastic strip, F-shaped plastic strip, plastic strip 6 m long and 8 mm thick);
  • drill with nozzles;
  • perforator with a drill;
  • wooden slats (1.5 cm);
  • building level;
  • stapler and staples;
  • self-tapping screws, dowels;
  • saw on wood, saw on plastic;
  • hammer, screwdriver, pencil, tape measure, knife;
  • mounting foam;
  • mineral wool (insulation);
  • decorative corners;
  • silicone sealant white;
  • metal scissors;
  • vapor barrier tape.

So, having prepared everything necessary materials, you can learn how to make slopes, and get to work.

How to remove an old window sill

In fact, there is nothing difficult in this matter. The main thing is to be as careful and careful as possible during the dismantling of the product, because you can remove it so that half of the wall collapses along with the window sill.

Dismantling the window sill

Please note: if your old structure is made of plastic, then before dismantling the PVC window sill, you need to find out at what points it is fixed. In most cases, the product is connected to a plastic window and during rough installation (for example, which is done only with a mount), you can not only violate the integrity of the slopes and walls, but also damage the glass or window frame

But back to standard situations.

In general, the dismantling sequence should be something like this:

  1. Slightly break the lower part of both slopes with a puncher or a chisel with a hammer;
  2. We are trying to loosen the window sill. If it does not lend itself, then we examine if there are screws or nails anywhere. If there are such fixation points, then delete them;

Please note: if the PVC window sill is being dismantled, then the self-tapping screws may not be on the back of the lower part of the frame (for example, on the balcony), but directly under the window sill itself, near the window. As a rule, in this case, the screws are screwed into the frame at an angle, and then the entire space is blown with foam.

  1. We take out all the linings, if there is mounting foam, then it is necessary to cut it off;
  2. We try to pry the window sill with a mount - from the bottom up. In addition, you can try to sort of move it away from the window frame (for example, a balcony). If all else fails, then try either to cut the window sill in the middle with a jigsaw, or if it is concrete, then just break it with a chisel. In principle, after this, the window sill should come out easily.

Sill cut in the middle for easier dismantling

Now consider what step-by-step instructions are usually used to install the product.

Which window sill to choose

Before considering the most popular solutions, it is worth noting that in any case, the work is simple and it is quite possible to do it yourself, completely without outside help. Unless in some situations you need a power tool, but you don’t have to buy it - you can save money and just rent it for a few days.

And this is generally the maximum - because, as a rule, even a complex do-it-yourself window sill repair does not take more than two days.

Let's take a look at the range of products.

Wooden window sills

wooden window sill

Features of wooden window sills are in such moments:

  1. Beautiful appearance;
  2. The feeling of naturalness, because the material is not artificial, it is very good to use it in interiors, in the concept of which the main emphasis is on the environmental friendliness of all elements of the situation;
  3. Versatility. That is, in fact, a tree can be used in almost all cases, due to the fact that it can be painted in any desired color;
  4. Ease of processing. To give the wooden window sill the desired shape, you can completely get by with just a hacksaw;
  5. Durability.

Note! Durability here is possible only when the tree itself is properly treated (with antiseptics and varnishes), and also when water does not pour on the product from the outside, condensation does not accumulate under it, etc. Therefore, do not forget to take care of the protection of the structure in advance.

Otherwise, mold and rot will most likely appear on the product very quickly.

  1. Good resistance to mechanical stress. The surface, of course, is quite easy to scratch, but it is unlikely that it will be possible to accidentally break it.

By the way, if you are interested in how to repair a wooden window sill, and not change it, then this is as easy as shelling pears. enough to remove old paint, clean the product with emery and paint it again. Agree that this technology is (to put it mildly) inexpensive and simple.

Now let's talk about plastic products and, of course, how to repair a plastic window sill in case of damage.

Plastic products

Plastic window sills

The following features of plastic surfaces can be distinguished:

  1. Large color gamut. And this is true - now there are plastic window sills of almost any color on sale, which allows you to quickly choose a product for any style of interior;
  2. Low cost. In principle, almost everyone can afford the installation and repair of a plastic window sill;
  3. Plastic is easy to care for. To do this, you need standard detergents;
  4. Relative ease of installation and restoration. In fact, it is possible to repair plastic window sills with your own hands even in cases where their surface is badly scratched. To do this, you can color them acrylic paint, enamel, paste over with a film or use special liquid plastic.

liquid plastic

Tip: if you don't know where to find good plastic, then try calling a company that installs and repairs window sills + plastic windows - for sure, its employees will at least tell you where you can buy such plastic.

And the last moment.

As a rule, plastic window sills do not emit any toxic and unpleasant odors, which allows you to safely use them in children's rooms, for example. However, it is still worth making sure that you have the appropriate certificates. If the seller in this regard is all right, then you will be shown the documents quickly.

And another type of product.

Products made of natural or artificial stone

  • from marble, granite, sandstone, etc.;
  • products based on acrylic, concrete, as well as polyester resins with a crumb of natural stone.

As a rule, these are very durable window sills and at the same time very beautiful. They just cost a little more than the plastic ones. wooden products. Plus, repairing a concrete window sill or a marble one, of course, can be done on your own, but it will take more time, effort and patience.

But in general, as you can see in the photo below, stone window sills look very respectable, so if the budget and interior features allow, then installing them would be a good solution.

stone window sill

Well, now let's look at how to replace window sills. As good example consider the most popular and common option - the dismantling of a wooden or concrete window sill and the installation, repair of PVC window sills.

So, let's start work.

The process of dismantling the window sill

Dismantling of window sills, as well as windows, can be carried out with or without preservation. This applies to a greater extent to models made of wood, stone and concrete. If the option with preservation is chosen, then you need to be prepared for the fact that the walls will noticeably suffer. In these cases, the space around the ends of the window sills brought to the walls is cleared of frozen building mixtures, and then the canvas itself, using the mount, is carefully and slowly removed from the opening. However, when changing wooden and stone window sills, more often they still choose the option without saving

This method requires sawing a wooden sheet with a hacksaw or breaking concrete or stone with a sledgehammer, and then carefully remove the fragments again using a mount. Sometimes a grinder is required to cut the reinforcement that binds a concrete window sill from the inside.

Because in recent times most often, a plastic window sill is replaced, then its dismantling should be considered in more detail:

  1. Under the canvas, carefully beat off the plaster or putty that was used to seal the joints.
  2. Carefully trim the cured mounting foam.
  3. If the joint between the frame and the window sill is sealed with silicone, then it is also advisable to cut the seam with a linoleum knife or spatula.
  4. By tilting and rocking the window sill, slowly pull the canvas towards you.
  5. Clear construction debris from the installation site of the new window sill.

In some cases, it is required to carefully beat off a layer of putty or plaster around the ends of the window sill wound onto the walls. However, the web is most often removed without this operation, since it is held in position by other means.

Dismantling of some stone, concrete and wooden window sills is sometimes possible only together with the window. This is explained individual characteristics structures and mounting methods. This possibility should always be taken into account when planning a replacement event, as in some cases a full-scale window replacement may be necessary.

How to paint a window sill

The layer of the old protective and decorative coating must first be removed. Depending on the thickness of the paint layer, one of three removal methods is selected for this: heat with a building hair dryer (the paint will swell), using special formulations or with a construction hammer. If the paint layer is thicker than 3 mm, then it is best to use a construction hammer.

Then the rest of the work is carried out:

  1. the surface is cleaned of paint residues and covered with a primer;
  2. the window sill is puttied and sanded after drying;
  3. the surface is re-primed and painted after drying.

If the structure cannot be saved by simple repainting, and there is noticeable damage on it, then the old concrete window sill will be restored.

Help from professionals

When it comes to old windows, not everyone can afford to remove such structures. And is it necessary? It is environmentally friendly, lightweight and costs several times cheaper than analogues made of wood and stone, and therefore is in the greatest demand in the building materials market.

However, like any thing, a plastic window sill is subject to wear and tear. The main reasons for its replacement:

  • damage(scratches, cracks, chips) that spoil the appearance of the window sill;
  • complex defects, breaking the integrity of the product and making it unsuitable for further use (large cracks, deep chips);

  1. Remove decorative corner trim.
  2. The remaining adhesive, silicone are removed.
  3. The screws that hold the panel are unscrewed.
  4. The seal is removed with a knife in the gaps between the frame, window sill and slopes.
  5. The panel itself is removed.

Monolithic slopes will need to be cut with a grinder, and then knock down the structure with a hammer or chisel.

How to change?

All work on replacing an old product with a new one consists of several stages:

  1. Dismantling of the old window sill.
  2. Installing a new one.
  3. Slope patching.

Let's talk about each of the stages.

Dismantling

So that in the future there are no problems with installing a new canvas, it is important to correctly approach the removal of the previous one. Carry out all dismantling work carefully, strictly following the instructions:

  1. A perforator on the sides of the block and along the entire length of the slope knock out a niche about 10 centimeters deep.
  2. The old canvas is knocked out with a hammer, sharply lifted and removed from the niche.
  3. Clear the space under the window building dust and excess trash.

Attention

Do not rush to throw away the old canvas, because it can serve as a template. According to it, the necessary measurements are made in the case when it is planned to install a similar design.

We offer you to watch a video on how to dismantle a plastic window sill:

Installing a new

How to install new block from plastic in place of the old one:

  1. Fit new block to size window opening. To do this, the old canvas is used as a template, a new product is cut out on it. From the ends and slopes after necessary measurements you need to cut out all the excess.
  2. Before installation, treat the entire surface with an antiseptic to create additional protection against moisture.
  3. In the case when the dimensions of the mounted window sill block differ from the previous ones, a cement screed is made to level the surfaces.
  4. All cracks in adjacent wall openings must be sealed with putty or cement.
  5. Using sealant, remove all voids at the points of contact of the new window sill block with the window opening.
  6. For convenience, install the support using small bars, lay on it plastic sheet. Align the block with a level so that it is exactly horizontal.
  7. Place the load on the slab, then fill all the voids with mounting foam. Do not forget about the inner edge under the canvas and about removing excess foam that will protrude beyond the edges of the entire structure. If cement is used for filling, then in the future it will be necessary to grind all the irregularities with sandpaper.
  8. Leave the structure for a day so that the mounting foam or cement mortar can harden properly.
  9. After 24 hours, check the correctness of the entire installation, remove the protective film from the surface of the leaf.
  10. Paint or plaster slopes.

It is better to make a ledge from the window small - 6–8 centimeters, so as not to impede the flow of heat from the radiator.

When replacing plastic product use the following best practices:

  • Before installation, it is necessary to moisten the back side of the canvas and the base of the cement screed of the window opening well with water using a sprayer. This will speed up the polymerization process of the mounting foam.
  • Fill in the voids large quantity foam should not be. It is better to foam the space with stripes, making gaps between them. In this way, you can save mounting foam and avoid undermining the entire installation when the foam swells over time.
  • It is better to treat the surface under the new canvas with an antiseptic agent - this will take a little time, but in the future it will protect the structure from moisture.

Replacing the plastic window sill is easy. You need to make a little effort by studying the theoretical foundations outlined in the article. All work will take you no more than two days, and having practical experience, you can replace the remaining windows in the apartment.
