It all depends on your imagination and artistic taste. An open foam key holder in the shape of a cat is our first master class.

It often happens that when we buy appliances or furniture, all this is brought to us packed in foam. But the foam - interesting material for crafts. Figures are cut out of it, glued fairy houses, letters for the celebration, and even lamps. So our master class today will be called: “How to make a housekeeper with your own hands from foam”. Decorative key holder in the shape of a cat great option for your hallway.

For work you will need:

  1. Polyfoam 50 mm thick.
  2. Cotton wool.
  3. PVA glue.
  4. Cardboard of the right size.
  5. Glue made from potato starch.
  6. Accessories - hooks for the key holder and rings for mounting on the wall.
  7. Acrylic putty.
  8. Acrylic paint - white and black.
  9. Knife or scalpel.

In the process of work, we need a starch paste. But you need to take into account the fact that you need to prepare the paste when necessary, since it is stored for no more than 5.5 hours and is used in a warm state. Before you start work and make a craft - a do-it-yourself housekeeper in the hallway, we will cook a paste.

  1. For a paste, pour 10 tablespoons of water into a ladle or bowl.
  2. In another dish we breed 1 table. a spoonful of starch and 2 tbsp. spoons of water from a bucket. Stir until thick cream. It is necessary that there are no lumps.
  3. We boil the water in the ladle and pour it in a thin stream, stirring vigorously, into the dishes with the finished mass. If the glue is too thick, add another 1-2 tablespoons of water at this moment.
  4. While the paste cools, a film forms on top - it must be removed with a spoon.

Preparing workplace: we put thick cardboard on the table, newspapers - there are always a lot of crumbs from the foam. Blank key holder - that's what we do at the beginning. On a piece of foam that we cut out for ourselves, we draw with a pen a sketch of the cat housekeeper. Below - an oval, above - a circle (you can use a saucer for stroking).

We start cutting according to the outlined sketch. If you do not want there to be a lot of crumbs from the foam, you can heat the knife (in the future it is better not to use this knife for eating) over the gas - the hot blade cuts faster. Just take care of good ventilation in the kitchen - otherwise you will breathe chemistry.

Create volume: select the head, paws, torso of the cat.

Primer with PVA glue and a brush. After priming, you need to let the product dry.

We cover the product with an “open housekeeper” papier-mâché made of cotton wool (we put cotton wool on the workpiece, and then moisten the cotton wool abundantly with a paste and a brush, and iron it with a brush). In the process of work, if a flat part is needed, then we press the brush harder, and if a three-dimensional part is needed (a head, for example), we barely touch the fleece with a brush (only for wetting with a paste).

We do all the details in the same way. Eyes and nose - balls, molded last. We will leave the product for the night - the key holder blank should dry well.

On the reverse side of the workpiece we make holes for the loops. Loops are needed in order to hang the finished work on the wall.

Fix the loops on the back side with acrylic putty.

Finished with white acrylic.

Attach key hooks. Hooks and loops can be made independently from thick wire, or you can buy ready-made ones at a hardware store.

On the inner part you can glue cardboard - so the open housekeeper looks neater on the wall.

We paint with acrylic paints. Leave to dry until morning and then varnish.

As a result, you no longer need to search the apartment in search of missing keys, and you are always aware of who is in your family at home - just look at the key holder and see if all the keys are in place.

The practical side is not the only advantage. There is also aesthetics, because you can decorate the key holder in any style. Do you have an eco hallway? Nothing will fit into it better than a tree branch key holder. High tech ? A small stylish metal key holder will suit him. Provence? Decoupage with flowers or birds. Classic? Wooden lacquer board of a strict form.

In any home store, you can find something that suits you personally. But there is another approach: to make a housekeeper with your own hands.

It has advantages:

  • Originality. A hand-made thing will always be different from a similar one, but made on a conveyor. Processing features inherent in each master, interesting design solutions - even making a housekeeper according to the instructions, you will know for sure that no one has the same one.
  • Diversity. At home, even without experience, you can make more than a dozen different housekeepers. From a wooden cut, from a box, from a wire, from a branch, even from forks - there is always material, you just need a little patience to handle it carefully.
  • harmony. A purchased key holder might fit perfectly in your hallway, but you need to find it first. A handmade one will fit like a native - because you will work on it, having come up with a design and knowing how it will fit.
  • Interesting experience. Making something with your own hands is not only useful - it's also entertaining. If you have kids, you can team up with them to turn the simple key holder into an adventure. And if there are no children, you can just enjoy the process.

Homemade key holders are different - from different material, different designs. Before you get to work, you need to figure out what you need.

What are the keys?

There are two ways to classify keys.

The first is by design:

  • open. These are usually made by hand, as they are easier to perform. They are any hooks on which you can hang keys driven into anything. Board with nails? Open. Branch with knots? Open. Leather cut with pockets? Open.
  • Closed. These are more difficult to make - some carpentry skills are required. They are a cabinet that closes with a door. The door will have to be hung on hinges, otherwise it will quickly fall off. They allow you to hide what exactly is inside, protect the keys from prying eyes. Shelves can be built into them for useful little things, hang a mirror on the door and expand the practical application in a different way.

The second way is according to the materials that were used.

Corks from wine bottles can be considered a kind of wood - you can also make a beautiful key holder out of them. But it will not work out of paper - it will wear out too quickly. It will also not come out of glass or stone - it is difficult to find material, it is even more difficult to process.

Advice

When choosing a material, focus on three indicators: what will be easiest for you to work with, what will fit best in your hallway, and what will you definitely be able to get. Once you've decided, get started.

How to do it yourself?

Before starting work, it remains to remember the basic rules that guide all masters:

  • In the process, you should not interfere. Ask your family to give you a couple of quiet hours, close the door and do not be distracted.
  • The place of work should be well lit. Doing something with your hands in the light of a dim light bulb is not only harmful to the eyes, but also simply inconvenient.
  • Everything should lie in its place. This is important when you are working with sharp objects. Having finished cutting plywood or a metal sheet, the jigsaw or knife should be placed in a conspicuous place, where you will not lose it. Otherwise, you can get hurt.

The simplest: cardboard housekeeper

Cardboard is the easiest material to make a housekeeper out of. You will need:

  • sheets of thick cardboard - plain gray color, can be found in the house, or you can buy a set;
  • a suitable drawing on photographic paper - you can print it in any stationery store, and choose your taste by searching the Internet;
  • decorative screws with beautiful hats, an awl;
  • piece of wire, brushes, varnish, glue, sponge.

The work instructions are simple:

  • cut out the desired shape from four sheets of cardboard - a circle, a square, a heart, it all depends on the imagination;
  • with an awl, pierce two holes in the upper part of one blank figure - for a loop;
  • insert the wire into the holes, twist so that it does not fall out;
  • on the side where the twisted wire remained, glue the rest of the blanks;
  • on the front, mark the holes for the screws and pierce them with an awl.

At this point, the preparation of the key holder itself is obtained. The rest is essentially decoration:

  • put the photo face down, wet the sponge, wet upper layer, and then roll it up, pressing lightly;
  • dry the photo, grease it with glue with a brush and stick it on the workpiece;
  • varnish everything together to achieve greater strength;
  • insert screws.

The result is a simple keychain. It is not very strong, it is afraid of moisture, it can tear if you pull hard on it, but it is easy to make, the materials cost almost nothing and the result looks decent. Especially if you like bright varnished drawings, and in the hallway you have a simple repair, without design frills.

Advice

This key holder is good as a gift for older relatives. Grandparents will be delighted to receive a little thing in which a photo with the faces of their beloved relatives and at the same time come in handy in the household.

Perfect eco-style: make from a branch

A branch as a key holder is fresh, original and fits perfectly into the eco-style. You can find it in the nearest park (you may have to spend a few days), and it will not be difficult to arrange it. Need:

  • dry branch - a wet tree will quickly begin to rot, lose its appearance;
  • stain, jigsaw, drill, sandpaper, hooks (you can buy special ones in the store, you can use thick nails).

If desired, you can place a varnished pattern over the branch that will complement it. You can hang beads, feathers and decorative keys on bright threads from it. You can carve anything on wood - from a few letters to a simple drawing.

For connoisseurs of strong drinks from corks

It is good to make a cork key holder with children, because most of all this process is similar to trying to assemble a mosaic without a picture that shows the end result.

You will need:

  • photo frame - you can glue it yourself, or you can buy it;
  • about twenty corks from wine bottles;
  • PVA glue - not a pencil, but in a jar;
  • nails with beautiful hats or hooks.

The following requires exceptional skill:

  • take a cork, smear it on the side and ends with glue, insert it inside the photo frame so that it is adjacent to the frame from the inside;
  • take the next cork, smear with glue, attach to the first.

The process is close to meditation: you need to fold the corks so that they perfectly fill the space of the frame. The resulting result should be left to dry overnight, and then varnished and inserted into the soft cork wood key hooks.

The advantage of such a housekeeper is its uniqueness. Just as there are no two identical branches, there are no two photo frames filled with corks in the same way. To give the design a chic, you can paint the cork different colors, burn or cut letters on them.

A simpler option, more suitable for eco-style, is to find a thin stick and hang corks on bright threads. Drive a hook into each cork and hang the key on it.

Advice

A simple version with corks will only look appropriate in a minimalist interior or in a hallway that is full of fun accessories. AT strict styles- in the same classics and hi-tech - he has no place.

Classical beauty: from saw cut wood

Despite the spectacular result, the process of making such a key holder is no more difficult than working with a tree branch. The only problem you may face is the difficulty of finding a pine saw cut while living in the city. But you can either find a fallen tree branch and saw off a piece from it, or turn to village relatives.

You will need:

  • round saw cut of a tree - a circle two or three centimeters thick, sawn from the end of a log, and it is best that it be pine;
  • stain, sandpaper of different grain sizes, varnish;
  • wide brush, hooks, drill, screwdriver;
  • printout of the image previously unrolled in a mirror.

Putting it all together is simple:

  • process with sandpaper - first medium grain, then fine, and only along the fibers, otherwise ugly scratches form;
  • moisten with water so that the wood swells slightly, leave to dry;
  • cover with stain (preferably water, because it hardens longer and all errors can be corrected in the process) three times to get a beautiful bright color;
  • varnish the prepared printout, then cover the front side of the back with it, press the printout against it, gently smooth it out so that there are no bubbles;
  • after the printout is dry (it will take two to three hours), moisten it warm water, slowly remove until the pattern appears - clean off the remnants of white;
  • on the back side of the key holder with a drill, drill holes for the hook on which it will hang, and on the front side - holes for the hooks on which the keys will hang.

The drawing can be anything, the main thing is that it be black and white - it will be possible to convey the colors with the help of varnish, but they will not be as bright as on the original. You can do without it at all, then the noble texture of the treated wood will decorate the hallway.

Advice

A wooden saw cut is well suited to classic interior. good decision will also select its shade so that it matches the color of the furniture. In extreme cases, you can go over it with a dry brush with acrylic paint to get the desired color.

Quality for decades - made of metal

Working with metal is tricky, especially if you've never done it before. But if you start with a housekeeper made of ordinary wire, it becomes clear that perseverance will overcome any difficulties. You will need:

  • thick wire - a few millimeters in diameter;
  • sharp scissors - best for metal, but ordinary wire cutters will do;
  • pliers, hammer.

The manufacturing process is simple:

  • find an interesting outline drawing on the Internet - for starters, something simple, like an intricate spiral, square, circle, stylized cat;
  • try to repeat the pattern with the help of wire - it should be bent by holding one end in pliers and fixing the other with your free hand;
  • sharp corners can be obtained by pressing them down with a hammer head; it is enough to curl smooth lines with pliers;
  • when the figurine is ready, you need to attach hooks from the same wire to its lower part, and fasten a thin wire at the back, on which you can hang the whole structure.

An interesting variation on this same idea is the use of a hanger. It does not need to be bent with pliers and beaten with a hammer. It is enough just to hang hooks on its lower part, and decorate the main part with anything, from the gears of an old watch to banal flowers from colored paper.

More hard way make a key holder out of metal - use a thin metal sheet, which can either be found in the remains after repairs, or bought in a store that sells hobby goods.

You will need:

  • thin metal sheet;
  • sharp scissors, nail, sketch drawing, hand drill, hooks;
  • a tool that will make the metal airtight and protect against rust.

The drawing cannot be any - only the one that can be cut out of metal. Silhouettes are best suited - animals, fish, plants, castles. Any is enough simple shapes. You can show your imagination and come up with an abstract figure.

Before more will remain:

  • cut out a silhouette from a sheet with a pattern;
  • attach the silhouette to a metal sheet, circle with the tip of a nail;
  • carefully cut along the contour, making sure that there are no ugly notches left;
  • with a hammer, bend the sharp edges that may turn out in the process;
  • drill holes for hooks;
  • cover the resulting base with a sealant, let dry;
  • insert the hooks into the holes, fasten the mount at the back.

In the form of a cloud

Instead of plywood, you can use thick paper or fabric with embroidery. You can even leave the frame empty by attaching the hooks directly to it - this will also be beautiful in its own way.

Advice

It is important to ensure that the pattern fits the interior. For hi-tech, birds with flowers will be alien, for rustic style the city of the future will not work either.

Artistic sawing out of plywood

Perhaps the most difficult of the open key holders is this one. Plywood that you could have left after repair, in the form of a shelf from unnecessary furniture or rear wall from something, the material is cheap, but capricious. If you work with it carelessly, it may crack, after which it will not look as beautiful as we would like.

But it can be given any shape, cut out of it any silhouette or word.

You will need:

  • jigsaw, drill, spatula, wood putty, varnish;
  • hooks for keys, directly a piece of plywood.

You will also need a sketch. As in the case with sheet metal, simple silhouettes are best: a cloud, a cat, a word, a flower, even an ordinary circle that can be turned into the moon. You can go further and make a double key holder: give it a shape, and then cut out the individual elements.

This idea can often be found: a key holder in the shape of a house, sawn separately elements in the form of human figures. Each has a key attached. When a person wants to take it, he takes out the figurine and leaves with it in his pocket. By the remaining voids, one can easily understand who is at home and who is not.

The technology, however, is the same:

  • take plywood, fix it well so that it does not slip out;
  • start sawing, carefully removing a thin layer of plywood - the movements of the jigsaw should be directed in one direction, intensify from beginning to end;
  • drill holes for hooks;
  • process the edges with sandpaper, if cracks are obtained, seal them with putty;
  • coat the product with varnish, let dry;
  • insert hooks into the holes.

To make the key holder brighter, you can paint it in any color with acrylic paint before varnishing. You can put a drawing on it, you can cut a simple pattern with a jigsaw. The main thing is that the result looks harmonious, fits the main interior.

Advice

Plywood key holder can fit any style. The question is how do you arrange it.
