Very often in feature films and literary works on military subjects such terms as company, battalion, regiment are used. The number of formations is not indicated by the author. Military people, of course, are aware of this issue, as well as many others related to the army.

This article is addressed to those who are far from the army, but still want to navigate the military hierarchy and know what a squad, company, battalion, division is. The number, structure and tasks of these formations are described in the article.

Smallest Formation

A subdivision, or department, is the smallest unit in the hierarchy of the Armed Forces of the Soviet, and later the Russian army. This formation is homogeneous in composition, that is, it consists of either infantrymen or cavalrymen, etc. When performing combat missions, the unit acts as a single unit. This formation is led by a full-time commander with the rank of junior sergeant or sergeant. Among the military, the term "dresser" is used, which means "squad leader" for short. Depending on the type of troops, units are called differently. For artillery, the term "crew" is used, and for tank troops, "crew".

The composition of the division

As part of this formation, the service is from 5 to 10 people. However, a motorized rifle squad consists of 10-13 soldiers. Unlike the Russian army, in the United States, a group is considered the smallest army formation. The unit itself in the US consists of two groups.

Platoon

In the Russian Armed Forces, a platoon consists of three to four squads. It is possible that there are more of them. The number of personnel is 45 people. The leadership of this military formation is carried out by a junior lieutenant, lieutenant or senior lieutenant.

Company

This army formation consists of 2-4 platoons. A company may also include independent squads that do not belong to any platoon. For example, a motorized rifle company may consist of three motorized rifle platoons, machine gun and anti-tank squads. The command of this army formation is carried out by a commander with the rank of captain. The strength of a battalion company is from 20 to 200 people. The number of military personnel depends on the type of troops. Thus, in a tank company, the smallest number of servicemen was noted: from 31 to 41. In a motorized rifle company, from 130 to 150 servicemen. In the landing - 80 soldiers.

A company is the smallest military formation of tactical importance. This means that company soldiers can perform small tactical tasks on the battlefield on their own. In this case, the company is not part of the battalion, but acts as a separate and autonomous formation. In some branches of the military, the term "company" is not used, but replaced by similar military formations. For example, cavalry is equipped with squadrons of one hundred people each, artillery with batteries, border troops with outposts, aviation with units.

Battalion

The number of this military formation depends on the type of troops. Often the number of servicemen in this case ranges from 250 to a thousand soldiers. There are battalions of up to a hundred soldiers. Such a formation is completed with 2-4 companies or platoons acting independently. Due to their significant numbers, battalions are used as the main tactical formations. It is commanded by an officer with the rank not lower than lieutenant colonel. The commander is also called "battalion commander". The activities of the battalion are coordinated at the command headquarters. Depending on the type of troops using one or another weapon, a battalion can be tank, motorized rifle, engineering, communications, etc. Motorized rifle battalion of 530 people (on the BTR-80) may include:

  • motorized rifle companies, - a mortar battery;
  • material support platoon;
  • communications platoon.

Regiments are formed from battalions. In artillery, the concept of a battalion is not used. There it was replaced by similar formations - divisions.

The smallest tactical unit of the armored forces

TB (tank battalion) is a separate unit at the headquarters of the army or corps. Organizationally, a tank battalion is not included in tank or motorized rifle regiments.

Since the TB itself does not need to increase its firepower, it does not contain mortar batteries, anti-tank and grenade launcher platoons. TB can be reinforced by an anti-aircraft missile platoon. 213 soldiers - this is the size of the battalion.

Regiment

In the Soviet and Russian army, the word "regiment" was considered the key. This is due to the fact that the regiments are tactical and autonomous formations. The command is carried out by a colonel. Despite the fact that regiments are named according to the types of troops (tank, motorized rifle, etc.), they may include various units. The name of the regiment is determined by the name of the predominant formation. An example would be a motorized rifle regiment, consisting of three motorized rifle battalions and one tank battalion. In addition, the motorized rifle battalion is equipped with an anti-aircraft missile battalion, as well as companies:

  • communications;
  • intelligence;
  • engineer-sapper;
  • repair;
  • material support.

In addition, there is an orchestra and a medical center. The personnel of the regiment does not exceed two thousand people. In artillery regiments, in contrast to similar formations in other branches of the armed forces, the number of servicemen is smaller. The number of soldiers depends on how many divisions the regiment consists of. If there are three of them, then the number of military personnel of the regiment is up to 1200 people. If there are four divisions, then the personnel of the regiment has 1,500 soldiers. Thus, the strength of a battalion of a regiment of a division cannot be less than 400 people.

brigade

Just like the regiment, the brigade belongs to the main tactical formations. However, the number of personnel in the brigade is higher: from 2 to 8 thousand soldiers. In a motorized rifle brigade of motorized rifle and tank battalions, the number of servicemen is twice as large as in a regiment. The brigades include two regiments, several battalions and auxiliary companies. The brigade is commanded by an officer with the rank of colonel.

The structure and strength of the division

The division is the main operational-tactical formation, completed from various units. Just like a regiment, a division is named after its predominant branch of service. The structure of a motorized rifle division is identical to that of a tank division. The difference between them lies in the fact that a motorized rifle division is formed from three motorized rifle regiments and one tank regiment, and a tank division - from three tank regiments and one motorized rifle. The division is also equipped with:

  • two artillery regiments;
  • one anti-aircraft missile regiment;
  • jet division;
  • missile division;
  • helicopter squadron;
  • one company of chemical protection and several auxiliary ones;
  • reconnaissance, repair and restoration, medical and sanitary, engineering and sapper battalions;
  • one battalion of electronic warfare.

In each division, under the command of a major general, from 12 to 24 thousand people are serving.

What is a corpus?

The army corps is a combined arms formation. There is no predominance of one division or another in a tank, artillery, or any other type of corps. There is no single structure in the formation of corps. Their formation is largely influenced by the military-political situation. The corps is an intermediate link between such military formations as a division and an army. Corps are being formed where it is impractical to create an army.

Army

The term "army" is used in the following meanings:

  • the armed forces of the country as a whole;
  • large military formation of operational purpose.

An army usually consists of one or more corps. It is difficult to indicate the exact number of servicemen in the army, as well as in the corps themselves, since each of these formations differs in its own structure and strength.

Conclusion

Military affairs are developing and improving every year, enriched with new technologies and types of troops, due to which, in the near future, as the military believes, the way wars are waged can be radically changed. And this, in turn, will entail an adjustment in the number of personnel of many military formations.

Motorized rifle and tankbrigades

Motorized rifle (tank) brigades of a new look were created on the basis of already existing separate motorized rifle (tank) regiments (brigades) or motorized rifle (tank) regiments that were part of the motorized rifle (tank) divisions in two stages.

At the first stage, the regiment (brigade) was transferred to a single deployed wartime staff, as a result of which the motorized rifle regiment (brigade) included: command and staff, three motorized rifle battalions, a tank battalion, an artillery battalion, an anti-tank battery, an anti-aircraft missile and artillery battery, a reconnaissance company, a communications company, an engineer company, a repair company, a material support company, a commandant platoon, a radiation, chemical and biological protection platoon, a command platoon of the chief of artillery, a department of the command of the head of air defense and a medical center. The tank regiment (brigade) differed from the motorized rifle regiment (brigade) in that it had three tank battalions and one motorized rifle battalion, in addition, the tank regiment (brigade) did not include an anti-tank battery. The tank battalions of a motorized rifle and tank regiment (brigade) differed in the number of tanks in a tank platoon (three tanks in a tank regiment (brigade) and four tanks in a motorized rifle regiment (brigade).

At the second stage, the regiments were renamed into brigades and reassigned directly to the headquarters of the armies, and the following changes were made to the staffing and organizational structure of the regiments (brigades):

The operational branch of the brigade headquarters was introduced into the brigade

The number of motorized rifle battalions increased to four

A rifle (sniper) platoon was introduced into the brigade

Tank battalions of motorized rifle and tank brigades led to a single state

The artillery battery deployed to the division

Howitzer artillery batteries were slowed down by self-propelled artillery

A rocket artillery battery was introduced into the artillery battalion

The anti-tank battery of the motorized rifle brigade was introduced into the artillery battalion

An anti-aircraft missile and artillery battery deployed up to a division

An anti-aircraft missile division was introduced into the brigade

The reconnaissance company deployed to the battalion

The reconnaissance battalion included an electronic intelligence company

A platoon of radiation, chemical and biological protection deployed to a company

A company of electronic warfare was introduced into the brigade.

Regimental (brigade) medical center deployed up to a company

The platoon of the head of the intelligence department was introduced into the brigade

The department of the directorate of the chief of air defense deployed to the platoon

at the same time, they continued to occupy the former military camps and remained a military unit. III ELEMENTS OF TECHNICAL SUPPORT CREATED IN BATTLE. MANAGEMENT OF TECHNICAL SUPPORT DURING THE COMBAT (MARCH)

Management of tank technical support during the battle (march). The control of the tank technical support of the battalion in battle is carried out from the command and observation post and from the technical observation post (PTN).

The place of the deputy battalion commander for weapons is determined by the battalion commander based on the conditions of the situation. As a rule, the deputy commander of the battalion for armaments in combat leads the work of the battalion's anti-terrorist operations, and in some cases may also be at the command and observation post.

Deputy company commanders for armaments during the battle, "as a rule, are located on the battalion's PTN. If a company PTN is organized, then it is headed by the deputy company commander for armaments.

The technical supervision point is the initial link in the overall technical support management system. The main tasks of the PTN are:

Observation of weapons and equipment of own and attached units on the battlefield;

Finding and mapping the location of out-of-service weapons and equipment;

Determining the levels of contamination of the area and failed weapons and equipment;

Finding out the condition of the crews (calculations, drivers), providing them with medical assistance if necessary;

Establishing the causes and nature of the failure of weapons and equipment, the volume of restoration work and the need for forces and means for their implementation;

Finding the nearest shelters for repair work, places convenient for the placement and deployment of repair units, as well as ways (routes) convenient for the approach of evacuation equipment to damaged (stuck) vehicles.

The PTN usually includes deputy company commanders for weapons, repairmen from the maintenance and repair units of battalions, and, if necessary, dosimetrist chemists, sappers and orderlies.

For the work of anti-tank, by order of the battalion commander, armored vehicles with high cross-country ability with communications equipment and night vision devices are usually allocated.

The management of the tank technical support of the battalion in battle is organized in accordance with the decision of the commander over the technical support radio network.

The technical support radio network should ensure the transmission of direct and reverse information from the deputy battalion commander for armaments up (battalion commander, deputy regiment commander for armaments, technical part of the regiment) and down (to subordinate and attached forces and means of technical support). Based on this, the battalion technical support radio network includes radio facilities allocated to the deputy battalion commander for armaments to ensure communication: with the battalion command and observation post; with the deputy commander of the regiment for weapons and the technical part of the regiment; with the forces and means of technical support of the senior commander, performing their tasks in the battalion's zone of operations. In addition, this radio network includes radio stations of damaged (out of order) and stuck vehicles, REG (RemG) of the battalion, PTN companies, if they are created according to the conditions of the situation, as well as radio stations of the forces and technical support equipment assigned to the battalion for the period of fulfillment of the assigned combat missions . For the technical support radio network, call signs of officials, control and warning signals, main and spare frequencies are established. An approximate organization of the battalion technical support radio network is shown in fig. eighteen.

To control tank technical support in a battalion, in addition to radio equipment, wired, mobile, signal and other means of communication are used.

Wired means of communication in a battalion are usually used when deployed on the spot and in defense.

Mobile means of communication are used to transmit orders and reports in all types of combat, as well as on the march and when located on the spot.

Signaling means of communication are used to transmit visual, sound and light signals for notification, control and interaction.

The deputy commander of the battalion for armaments receives information about the state of the failed vehicles from the personnel who are part of the anti-tank troops and monitor the vehicles on the battlefield, from the reports of the crews (crews, drivers) on the battalion technical support radio network, as well as from the reports of the deputy commanders armament companies sent from the PTN to stopped vehicles if there is no radio communication with them. Personal observation and constant listening to radio communications conducted in the battalion commander's network allows the deputy battalion commander for armaments to always be aware of changes in the tactical situation, to know the commander's decisions made on it and the tasks that he sets for units.

Having received the necessary information on the tactical and technical situation that has developed, the deputy battalion commander for armaments quickly understands and evaluates it, makes a decision to restore the failed vehicles with his own forces and means or transfer them to the means of the senior chief and sets tasks for the head of the REG (RemG) battalion.

He reports to the battalion commander and deputy regiment commander for armaments about all the vehicles that have failed, the nature of the damage (jamming), the decision made to restore or transfer them in the prescribed manner.

Location of damaged vehicles with indication of their types and numbers, nature of damage, time of failure and the decision made on these vehicles (repair or evacuation by own means, transfer to senior manager’s funds, decommissioning), actual places of maintenance, places of refueling with fuel and lubricants , places and time of replenishment with ammunition, data on changes in the radiation and chemical situation, blockages and destruction in the battalion's zone of operations, where vehicles can get stuck, and other data are plotted on the work map.

The main requirement for a work map is its clarity and reliability. The working hag is carried out with colored pencils, neatly, in compliance with the requirements of instructions and charters.

The battalion's anti-tank department maintains a register of out-of-service weapons and equipment, which reflects more detailed information about the location, nature of damage, the amount of preparatory work and work to repair and evacuate damaged and stuck vehicles. This journal can be kept on pre-prepared forms or on the back of the work card in the form of a table.

The frequency and direction of movement of the P "GN depend on the current situation and the instructions of the head of the technical observation point. As a rule, the PTN moves behind the battle formations of its unit from shelter to shelter in such a way that as many combat vehicles as possible are in its observation zone.

Data on the situation on tank technical support accumulated on the PTN during the day of the battle, 9 as well as information received from the deputy company commanders for armaments and the head of the REG (RemG) of the battalion, the deputy battalion commander for armaments reports to the deputy regiment commander for armaments or to the technical part of the regiment. Having received instructions from them, the deputy commander of the battalion for armaments organizes further work on tank technical support.

Thus, the head of the fire department during the battle performs the following tasks:

Maintains constant communication with the commander of his unit and the deputy commander of the regiment (battalion) for weapons;

Reports on the location and condition of out-of-service weapons and equipment, the status of crews (crews) or drivers (drivers), on the measures taken to restore weapons and equipment with their own and attached forces and means;

Maintains a work map and a log of out-of-service weapons and equipment.

Along with the performance of these duties, the head of the anti-terrorist operation carries out constant management of his own and attached evacuation and repair forces and means.

Composition and tasks of repair and evacuation groups. To provide technical assistance to vehicles that failed during the battle, their current repair on the spot or evacuation to the nearest shelter, repair groups and repair and evacuation teams (REG) from the maintenance units of the battalions and the repair company of the regiment are organized. The composition usually includes one or two mobile tank repair shops (maintenance vehicles) and a vehicle with armored equipment, fuel and lubricants, and the REG, in addition, tank tractors or BREM-1. RemG and REG are provided with night vision devices.

The work of the battalion REG (RemG) is led by the deputy battalion commander for armaments.

The evacuation and repair of weapons and equipment during the battle is carried out by means of the battalion's REG, which is located behind the first echelon. First of all, equipment is evacuated from under enemy fire and from threatened areas where enemy wedging is possible. Damaged equipment that has serviceable weapons and is capable of fighting remains in battle formation and is evacuated only with the permission of the battalion commander.

The evacuation of damaged tanks within the battalion's defense area is carried out by attached tractors, and on the brigade's SPPM - brigade evacuation equipment.

During the battle, the RemG (REG) of the battalion carry out repairs that restore the combat capability of vehicles and ensure their mobility, as well as preparatory work for the evacuation of vehicles to shelters or to the brigade's SPPM.

The collection point for damaged vehicles (SPPM) is organized by order of the deputy commander of the regiment for armaments in areas with the largest concentration of out-of-service vehicles. The commander of the repair company of the regiment is appointed as the head of the SPPM.

The SPPM conducts:

Control of contamination of vehicles with radioactive, toxic substances and, if necessary, their decontamination (degassing);

Inspection of machines and determination of the scope of their repair;

Repair of machines that, according to the conditions of time and opportunity, can be repaired by the RR regiment;

Transfer to repair units or evacuation to units of the senior chief of service of damaged vehicles that are not repaired by the forces and means of their unit.

The composition and tasks of closing the battalion.

To establish the reasons for the stops of cars;

Assistance to crews in the maintenance and repair of machines and the issuance of spare parts necessary for troubleshooting;

Evacuation from traffic routes, easily stuck and faulty vehicles that interfere with the movement of the column in the battalion, a technical lock is organized.

Composition: the WTO of the battalion and 1-2 ATMZ are included in the closing of the battalion. If necessary, it is reinforced by the means of the unit's repair company.

The closure follows at the tail of the battalion's marching column and is led by the deputy commander of the battalion for weapons.

Combat and other equipment that failed during the march stops on the right side of the road or is evacuated to the side. The deputy commander of the company (battalion) for armament, following with a closure, when the machine fails, evaluates the volume and nature of the repair work and makes a decision.

If the crew is able to eliminate the malfunction, they are given spare parts and are instructed on the procedure for performing work. If necessary, one or more specialists from the battalion closing staff are left for repairs. The duration of the repair of vehicles by closing on the route should not exceed the time until the next battalion column arrives.

Having given the necessary orders on the route, the deputy commander of the battalion for weapons, together with. the battalion arrives in the area of day (night) rest and organizes the preparation of weapons and equipment for the next transition or battle. Combat equipment that cannot be restored by closing is transferred to the regiment's repair facilities on the route, and if there are evacuation facilities as part of the washing, it is evacuated from the route to shelters. On damaged vehicles that are not repaired on the route, first of all, malfunctions are eliminated to ensure movement on their own, or they are towed by the battalion's assets to the area of concentration, where they are repaired or transferred for repair by the regiment's assets. Cars lagging behind on the way, after repair, continue to move, attaching themselves to the passing column.

In cases where the enemy hit the column with a nuclear weapon, the battalion continues to carry out the task, the closure follows the battalion. Repair of damaged vehicles is carried out in the area by the repair facilities of the regiment or division.

If there are gorges, crossings and other difficult sections on the route, repair and evacuation teams from the regiment's repair company are sent to these places in advance, usually from the OOD.

Assembly points for damaged vehicles are planned - in areas of large halts and rest. If necessary, SPPM can be organized in areas of mass failure of machines. The SPPM is deployed by the forces and means of the regiment's repair company.

The deputy commander of the company (battalion) reports to his senior commander about vehicles that have fallen behind on the way, and at the same time reports on the technical condition and availability of equipment and weapons.

CONCLUSION

The readiness of formations and subunits to perform combat missions, advance over long distances in various ways in readiness to conduct combat operations in various directions, both in local wars and armed conflicts, and in carrying out tasks in peacekeeping operations, are the main tasks of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. In modern conditions, the military leadership of the country pays special attention to the training of formations, units and subunits that are part of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.

To successfully solve these tasks, troops must have a reliable control system, units and formations are equipped with military equipment, the development of high technical capabilities of which should be served by an effective system of technical support for units, a system for maintaining vehicles in constant combat readiness for their intended use in various situations.

It is possible to ensure high combat readiness of arms and military equipment, their trouble-free and trouble-free operation only with the correct organization of the operation of machines in various conditions and situations, taking into account the experience of combat operations of troops in wars and armed conflicts.

The main responsibilities for organizing the correct operation of weapons and military equipment are assigned to the commanders of units (formations), their deputies for armaments and heads of services. Starting from the receipt of vehicles from central bases, industrial plants or overhaul plants, the commanders of subunits (formations) are obliged to organize:

Commissioning of weapons and military equipment facilities;

Bringing them to a specified degree of readiness for use and maintaining it for a specified time;

Intended use;

Storage;

Transportation.

If necessary, at the final stage of the operation of weapons and military equipment, the commander of the unit directs the termination of the operation of machines and their write-off.

For the successful solution of such problems, it is necessary to display the comprehensive creative activity of the ZKV battalions (companies) in tank technical support.
