Do-it-yourself fabric ceiling step by step instructions. Fabric ceilings: methods for manufacturing stretch and decorative. Draperies and their color

Beauty and modern aesthetics are given to any living space by fabric stretch ceiling, it is not at all difficult to mount it with your own hands. At the same time, you will spend a minimum of time on the entire complex of works.

The view we are interested in ceiling decor has been actively used relatively recently. Many people liked it right away. Others treat it with caution, believing that the special advantages of tension structures are greatly exaggerated. Real Benefits fabric ceiling uses are as follows:

  1. Ability to create seamless surfaces. Manufacturers produce canvases up to 5.1 m wide. This is more than enough to mount the ceiling without spoiling it. appearance seams in any room. In cases where ceiling surface has a large width, the installation of a fabric structure is impossible - its individual canvases cannot be connected to each other.
  2. High resistance to temperature changes. You can mount a fabric ceiling with your own hands on a loggia, veranda, in others unheated premises. The canvas will feel great - do not lose your operational qualities and geometry, at temperatures down to -40°.
  3. Excellent durability decorative coating. Cloths made of fabric are very difficult to damage or scratch with objects with sharp edges.

Also, seamless structures do not electrify during operation, do not burn, they can be painted up to 3-4 times with acrylic compounds. Installation of such canvases requires minimal skills from home master. You don't even need to take particularly careful measurements of the ceiling and fabric. The main thing is to buy a canvas with some margin, and then simply cut it to the required parameters.

Seamless fabric ceiling construction

They make fabric tension structures made of polyester (100% synthetic material), which is specially impregnated with polyurethane. There are several manufacturers who use natural fibers or fiberglass to produce canvases. But this base is in any case impregnated with polyurethane. This means that tension structures made of fabric cannot be called absolutely environmentally friendly. When heated, they do not emit any toxic compounds that are potentially hazardous to humans. But on this, in principle, all their ecological cleanliness ends.

Important nuance. Fabric ceilings are positioned as waterproof coatings. It really is. But it should be understood that the canvas of the fabric is characterized by a low degree of elasticity. It stretches much worse than PVC stretch ceilings. This means that the fabric structure may well break out of installed fasteners during severe floods. Remember this.

Do-it-yourself fabric ceiling is mounted without preheating the room to certain temperature. This ensures ease of operation. The canvas is fastened to a baguette - a special profile element. It is made of aluminum or plastic, and attached to the wall with self-tapping screws and dowels.

Baguette happens: U-shaped (otherwise it is called wedge); clip-on. The U-shaped profile is installed really quickly. During its installation, accurate measurements of the room are not required. Its installation is carried out using a decorative insert and a glazing bead. It is worth noting that the baguette in the shape of the letter P does not provide clearly defined borders of the canvas, which can cause deformation of the decorative ceiling covering, displacement of lighting devices on it. But clip-on fasteners avoid these problems. Therefore, experts recommend self-assembly of fabric ceilings with its help.

U-profile for installation fabric ceiling

Clip-on mount is made of high-strength plastic material. Its arrangement is such that you do not need to take care of additional decorative elements(special insert when carrying out installation work using a P-baguette). Note! Clip-on fasteners guarantee a long period of trouble-free operation of the fabric structure. The number of profiles required to install a seamless ceiling is calculated elementarily. It is equal to the perimeter of the room. When determining the amount of fabric needed, be sure to leave a small piece of material on each side.

Installation of a fabric ceiling structure

Marking is done by means of a level (water, laser). Set level marks on each wall - use a simple pencil. Then pull the upholstery dyeing thread along the marked points, pull it back a little and release it. A clearly visible mark will remain on the wall. You will be guided by it when carrying out installation activities.

Along the line made, it is required to drill holes with a cross section of 6 mm (the distance between them is taken on the order of 12–15 cm). Plastic dowels are installed in them, into which a baguette is then attached using self-tapping screws. It is necessary to fix the profile as high as possible. The durability of the operation of the ceiling structure depends on this.

Now proceed to stretch the canvas according to the following scheme:

  • fill (successively) the corners of the canvas in a baguette;
  • fix the fabric structure in the center of the wall;
  • strengthen the canvas in the center of the intermediate sections;
  • install decorative trim.

It is convenient to fill the canvas with a spatula with a rounded end. You will not have any difficulties in carrying out such work. Provided that you perform them with a neat and understanding partner. Final work - installation lighting fixtures. Do not forget that they are installed using thermal rings. An important nuance! It is desirable to attach massive chandeliers to the embedded element (it is made from a piece of thick plywood or from a wooden block, which are fixed with dowels to the existing ceiling).

Europe got acquainted with stretch ceilings in the second half of the twentieth century.

In the late 90s, this technology came to taste and countries former USSR. Since then, stretch ceilings have confirmed their status every year. better design ceiling space.

The choice of stretch ceilings

The popularity of stretch ceilings among consumers is due to the numerous advantages of products, among which are:

However, when talking about stretch ceilings, one should not rely only on positive characteristics.

Of course, there are also disadvantages, which we will talk about:

  • high cost compared to other types of ceilings;
  • not solid construction stretch ceilings - they are afraid of damage by sharp objects and chemicals;
  • mounting certain types stretch ceilings is notable for its complexity and requires special skills. It is also worth mentioning here about bulky or scarce equipment;
  • Not all types of stretch ceilings are suitable for unheated rooms.

Attention: Difficulties of installation and fear of temperature changes - apply only to PVC (polyvinyl chloride) ceilings. Quite often you can find judgments that they begin to sag some time after installation. With the right choice of material for ceilings, as well as following installation technologies, such problems are unlikely to bother the owner of the house.

Do-it-yourself fabric ceiling and its advantages

There are two types of stretch ceilings - PVC ceilings and fabric (seamless) ceilings. Comparing the installation of similar structures, it should be noted that the installation PVC ceilings differs in its complexity. Do-it-yourself fabric ceilings are a relatively easy task. Such structures occupy about a third of the construction market of stretch ceilings. Of course, this is not accidental.

Let's talk about the benefits of fabric ceilings:

Ceiling installation: materials and tools

  • construction stapler;
  • drill or puncher - based on the material of the walls;
  • drills (full set);
  • spatula for fabric ceilings (fins);
  • construction knife;
  • scissors;
  • levels - laser or water.

Materials required for installation:

  1. calico - quantity, not less than the size of the room + 20 cm (optional) on each side;
  2. wooden bars or glazing beads - their dimensions are 40x50 or 50x50 mm. The amount of material must match the perimeter of the room;
  3. anchors - the same as wooden bars. The size and type of anchors is related to the thickness and strength of the material from which the walls are made;
  4. mounting adhesive ( best option buy a shoe);
  5. tracing paper;
  6. glue for tracing paper;
  7. PVA glue);
  8. primer for coarse calico;
  9. dye for coloring calico - it is recommended to use acrylic paint or water emulsion;
  10. plinth for the ceiling (baguette) - the quantity must match the perimeter of the room to hide the ceiling attachment points.

Attention: The article does not talk about the presence sewing machine and a set of tools necessary for the manufacture of the canvas. This is the task of the cutter, seamstress and ironer. You just have to contact the specialized workshops, which in as soon as possible and for a reasonable price will do all the work for you.

Stage 1. Marking the ceiling

very responsible and milestone from the entire scale of work. The correct marking will completely affect the quality and correct installation of the ceiling structure. The first mark is fixed at a height of 5 cm from the ceiling, and then it is projected onto all the walls of the room. According to the results of the markup, all walls of the room should have parts of a horizontal line.

Tip: The first mark will help to eliminate irregularities and slopes of the ceiling and walls in the room. A special level should be used for its designation.

Stage 2. We install the bars around the perimeter of the room

Installation of glazing beads: drill a hole in the wall for the anchor. First of all, the glazing beads are numbered and receive their serial number for installation. Further, a hole must be drilled in all the bars for attaching the anchor. Attach all the bars in order to the line marked on the wall. Then, based on drilled holes, project the marks onto the wall. This technique will help match the holes on the bars and walls. Install the selected type of anchors, and then fix the glazing beads on them.

Helpful information: You may encounter the option of attaching glazing beads to a special profile for stretch ceilings. It should be remembered that in this case fastening of glazing beads occurs not end-to-end, but every 10 cm.

Stage 3. The process of fixing the canvas

This step requires at least two people. The need is due to fixing the canvas without distortions. Installation work will not do without the use construction stapler and mounting adhesive. The glazing bead is covered with a layer of glue, after which a canvas is applied to it and pressed with a flipper in the corner of the junction of the bar with the wall. Next, pull the canvas by the free part while holding the fin. As a result, the panel will stretch and it will be possible to fix it with a stapler. First of all, the canvas is fixed on the very long wall rooms (from the middle to the edges). Next, you can go to the opposite wall. Make sure that dropped ceilings fabric had no folds. Finally, the canvas is fixed on the narrow part of the room according to a similar principle: from the middle to the edges. With the remains of the extra edges of the attached canvas - just cut them off.

Stage 4. Tracing paper

Tracing paper hides the connecting seams of the calico fabric. In the absence of such events, the paint will not be applied evenly, but will hang in bubbles. Ultimately, all the work will go down the drain, because the room will lose its aesthetic appeal. This stage of work is responsible and requires careful and thoughtful actions.

First of all, a special glue is prepared. Recipe: cook a paste (based on flour) and add PVA glue to it (30% by weight of the paste). Further, the mass is diluted with water until a density is formed and filtered. Application of glue - simultaneously on the canvas and on the tracing paper. It is best to bend the edges of the tracing paper and overlaps - this will prevent them from sticking to each other. After the glue has dried, tear off the folded edges of the tracing paper. Moreover, in places of separation, the tracing paper should become as thin as possible - as a result of which the seams will become invisible. Some experts advise to process the seams sandpaper and PVA glue.

Stage 5. Do-it-yourself fabric ceilings: chic and beauty

After waiting for the PVA glue to dry, we begin to prime the entire surface. After two hours, you can fix the baguette. After that, the ceiling is painted with paint in 3 layers.

Fabric stretch ceilings look stylish, original and environmentally friendly. Such decoration will tell about the subtle taste of the owner, emphasize the overall style and color scheme of the room, give a piece of originality and authenticity. However, in addition to its main advantages, environmental friendliness and beauty, such a ceiling has others. About them - ease of installation, the possibilities of drapery with natural fabrics and special design methods - read in the article.

    Ceiling decoration in oriental style

    Fabrics have long been widely used in interior decoration. Due to the variety of textures and patterns, colors and the ability to transmit light, matter allows you to realize any ideas.

    Draping a ceiling with a fabric with your own hands, at first glance, may seem incredibly complicated. However, there is nothing impossible in this, just a good imagination and a little effort. Moreover, this is one of the few types of finishes that do not require special building skills and tools.

    What fabrics can be used

    There are practically no restrictions. The material must be elastic, durable, not absorb moisture and not fade in the light.

    The modern textile industry also produces special materials treated with antistatic compounds that do not collect dust and do not cause allergies. Apply natural (linen, cotton, silk, wool) or artificial materials.

    • Matter can be shiny or matte, smooth or textured, light and airy or rich and heavy.
    • It can be plain or patterned, transparent or dense.
      Looks especially good in the interior use various kinds, provided they are combined with each other.
    • Metallized fabrics, leather and tapestry are used in decoration. The latter type is very attractive for smooth finishes.

    Note. Drapery of ceilings with tapestry fabric can be done without a seam with a room width of up to 3 meters.

    Choice of color and pattern

    If the room is narrow and long, the transverse stripes will visually correct the geometry of the space. In room small area do not use matter with large pattern. Finishing with light materials creates a feeling of more volume than with dense and dark fabrics.

    How to cover with fabrics with your own hands, photo

    Different colors cause different emotions in people, and even physiological changes in the body:

    • Red color uplifting, but can cause anxiety and irritation. It raises blood pressure, speeds up the heart rate and breathing rate.
      Not recommended for use in recreation areas.
    • Yellow stimulates nervous system and good for the eyes.
    • Green color soothes, reduces pressure, promotes relaxation and rest.
    • Blue- increases efficiency.
    • Purple Sets up for reflection, but quickly tires.

    Color combinations must be selected especially carefully, it all depends on the purpose of the room.

    Mounting methods

    For mounting fabric on the ceiling, several methods are used:

    • Sticking matter;
    • Fastening with brackets to the rails;
    • Pulling on wooden frame;
    • Use of Velcro tapes;
    • Application of special profiles.

    Adhesive way

    Do-it-yourself ceiling covered with fabric, photo

    Before gluing the material, it is necessary to carry out some preparatory work:

    • Clean the surface of dust and rinse it with a solution of soda;
    • If the ceiling is painted, it is necessary to clean it with sandpaper to roughen it;
    • Irregularities are necessary;
    • Dark spots will need to be painted over so that they do not show through the fabric;
    • For work use a special glue. Having applied it to the ceiling, they let it dry a little, then the canvas is glued, leveling it from the middle to the edges.
    • Two strips are joined in the same way as wallpapering, in compliance with the pattern, which can be clearly seen in the photo.

    Advice. If there are irregularities, it is better not to use a pattern with stripes, they will highlight surface flaws. Looks good material with a small pattern of light colors.

    Fastening to rails

    combination different options the same, and how to mount it with your own hands, photo

    In this case, along the perimeter of the room, rails of a small section (2 * 3 cm) are attached to the ceiling (or to the walls). The edge of the canvas is nailed to them with staples using a stapler.

    Advice. If the width is not enough, the stripes can be sewn to fit the pattern. When using a tapestry, a fabric that matches in color or contrast can be sewn around the perimeter.

    • Staples are driven one near the other. There will be a lot of them, it is better to use an electric stapler.
    • First, the canvas is nailed along one of the walls, starting from the middle and gradually moving towards the corners, stretching evenly. Then it is fixed, in a similar way, on the opposite wall.
    • On the two remaining walls, the material is nailed, starting from the middle, and pulling.
    • In places of attachment, to hide the staples, glue a braid or cord.

    (foam or polyurethane foam).

    Using the Framework

    A wooden frame is made from slats with a cross section of 2 * 3 cm. A canvas is pulled over it, and the frame itself is suspended from the ceiling. You can use decorative chains, then it is possible to adjust the suspension in height. With this method, installation, repair or maintenance of the decorated element is facilitated.

    It is this option that is used for temporary room decor when it is necessary to decorate it, for example, for a wedding.

    Velcro application

    The material, instead of staples, can be fixed with the help of special tapes - Velcro (used when sewing clothes). Their price is small, they are sold by the meter. One part of the tape is fixed on the base with glue, and the other is sewn to the fabric.

    The advantage of this fastening is that it is very easy to remove the fabric for washing or replacement, and then fasten it back.

    Profile mount

    In this case, a special profile (baguette) is used, as for stretch ceilings. It is mounted on walls or ceilings, and the canvas is fixed in it with a special spatula.

    Some nuances of fabric ceilings and their care

    To create "sails" or "waves", you can hang thin tubular curtain rods from the ceiling, and throw panels over them.

    If you need to fix the edge of the fabric in a circle, you can use a gymnastic hoop, wooden hoop, or other suitable items. A cord pre-sewn on the back of the fabric will help create interesting effects.

    Lamps can shine through a thin layer, or fall below the drapery.

    • The ceiling near the chandelier can be decorated with a “stucco” foam rosette. In the folds it is easy to hide the joints of the edges of the panels.
    • To decorate the attachment points of the panels, you can use lambrequins made of fabric or wood.
    • If various plastic (wooden) corners or linings are used, they can be pasted over with a matching or contrasting fabric.
    • In rooms with high humidity, it is better to use water-repellent fabrics.

    Please note: for decorative ceiling, the surface of the main can be insulated.

    Fixing the fabric in a circle with your own hands, photo

    • The calculation of the amount of material is usually carried out as follows. When gluing fabric, the margin should be at least a meter in length.
    • If folds are used, then a coefficient of 2.5-3 is used in width. That is, for one meter of the decorated surface, it is necessary to count about 3 meters of the width of the fabric.
    • Caring for fabric ceilings is easy. Approximately twice a year, fabric elements should be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. Use a nozzle with a soft brush, and a cloth cover put on it. The use of aerosol antistatic agents is recommended.

    If necessary (to remove stains), use stain removers. It is advisable to first test their effect on a piece of fabric. For washing, the drapery of the ceilings is removed, but this has to be done infrequently.

    Updated home interior always pleasing to the eye. If there is a desire to improve the appearance of the dwelling and get not just stylish design, but also to make it beautiful and modern, the owners usually choose not only wall decoration and furniture for a long time and carefully, but also pay attention to the design of the ceiling.

    Scheme of the fabric ceiling "Starry sky".

    There are a large number design solutions in which excellent ceilings are used for finishing modern materials. You can choose stylish drawings and any colors, and build the ceilings themselves in the most different forms. Do not lose popularity and multilevel structures equipped with lighting, as well as stretch ceilings. One of the common methods for making changes to the interior familiar to the eye is the design of the ceiling space with fabric material.

    Fabric stretch ceilings

    A brief classification scheme for stretch ceilings.

    cozy and stylish interior it turns out if you choose a stretch option for finishing the ceiling. In such a finish, the main advantage is considered quite affordable price for all the work necessary for the arrangement, simple installation. The preparation process is also very convenient: it does not require a long and thorough cleaning of the surface. During the work, the room will remain relatively clean, debris and dust will not accumulate, which is a significant disadvantage when whitewashing or wallpapering. It is quite possible to make a fabric ceiling with your own hands.

    The building materials market offers consumers big choice textures and various color solutions for stretch ceilings. If in the future there will be a desire to change the design of the room, stretch fabric can be easily and quickly removed and replaced with another.

    Advantages of stretch fabric ceilings:

    • ease of maintenance: dust will not accumulate on the ceiling, and it is very easy to clean;
    • the ceiling is environmentally friendly and does not emit extraneous unpleasant odors;
    • most materials are produced in such a way that sunlight does not spoil their shade;
    • durability and practicality of the material.

    A fabric ceiling, acting as a kind of stretch ceiling structures, can radically change the design of any room. It is a base impregnated special composition polystyrene. The material processed in this way is very strong, the ceiling will have an aesthetic appearance. Since stretch ceilings made of fabric do not have seams, upper surface the room acquires a neat, impeccably elegant look.

    The material for the fabric ceiling can be natural or artificial fabric, fiberglass. In the latter case, the ceilings are more durable, their operational properties contribute to the fact that the material calmly withstands the impact of both low and high temperatures. The installation steps for the construction of a fabric-based ceiling are almost the same as those for a PVC structure.

    How to prepare the ceiling for finishing with fabric?

    To make the surface of the ceiling perfectly smooth, it is desirable to level it with a special mixture and plaster it. To achieve a good visual effect, stretch the fabric as tight as possible, like a canvas on a stretcher to create a painting masterpiece.

    Thoroughly clean the surface from existing contaminants, repair cracks and defects with putty. Dry everything and sand with sandpaper to remove all roughness. Be careful not to leave stains that could show through the fabric. If it is not possible to remove them, apply a layer of nitro enamel on the stains or cover the defective areas with thin aluminum foil. If it hit the surface Oil paint, rinse it with water with the addition of soda, dry the surface and clean it with sandpaper.

    How to install fabric ceilings?

    The installation of a fabric ceiling is the attachment of a textile material to a baguette frame.

    Harpoon and wedge systems for fastening stretch ceilings.

    The principle is the same, but different baguettes can be used. For example, a baguette with a cam profile or a wedge profile can be selected, or a wooden baguette can be ordered from woodworking workshops.

    Let's take a look at the last of these. When choosing factory-made baguettes, the operations will be approximately the same, with the exception of the preparation of the frame.

    Prepare wooden bars. Their cross section should be 40x40 mm - usually such orders are easily carried out in construction workshops. It must be borne in mind that the corners of the bars in the workshop will be slightly filed, so the length of the bar must be ordered a little larger. And it’s better to carefully measure all sides and show the results of measurements in the workshop, explaining that you need details for a stretch fabric ceiling. Also stock up on Velcro tape - you can find it in sewing stores.

    Scheme of a two-level stretch ceiling.

    From the bars, assemble a frame that will need to be attached to the ceiling or wall. Attach the hard side of the tape to the protruding part of the timber: first glue it on liquid nails, then fix it with a construction stapler. Sew the back of the tape along the perimeter to the fabric.

    Complete control line along the perimeter: for this, on the wall, mark with a dot the level at which you are going to install the structure, and move the dot to each corner. Check the accuracy using a tape measure, building level. Tape off the lines between the dots with painter's cord. To fasten the baguette to the surface, use screws and dowels.

    Installation can be done in several ways. For example, the resulting structure can be attached to the ceiling using chains for this: the frame is simply hung on them, fastened with pipe holders. When hooks are screwed into the frame and finally hung up, the stretch ceiling looks unusual and very impressive. To perform this design, it is necessary to carefully measure the frame and adjust it on all sides in such a way that the details of each side will be parallel to the walls.

    The design is not only reliable, but also practical. If desired, it can be easily removed from the ceiling to clean the soiled canvas or change it to another. The fabric is simply removed from the Velcro tape.

    Try to fix the lighting fixtures on the mounting strips - this will allow you to create additional fixation points for the canvas. For example, you can make consoles for fastening from plywood square pieces attached to the base ceiling on metal ribbon hangers.

    In another version, the frame is attached to the wall, and the canvas is already fixed to it.

    To attach the panel, stretch it and tuck it into a baguette on the side where the wall is longer. Step back from the corner 15-20 cm and strengthen the section with a length of 30 cm. Stretch the fabric and do the same with the other side.

    After pulling, carefully fill the material into the profile. If you use a spatula, you should choose not especially sharp, so as not to damage the fabric. Go to the opposite edge and do the same operation. Having stretched the canvas along the long sides, do the same with the short ones.

    If you accidentally made folds on the fabric during the fixing process, they are easy to remove using building hair dryer. Warm up problem areas with smooth circular movements, set the temperature to 120 degrees. The tool must be kept at a distance of 20 cm from the canvas. At the end of the work, remove the pieces of material that protrude beyond the edges.
