Rocking chair made of wood. How to make a rocking chair with your own hands from improvised materials. Stage #4 - pre-processing parts

(18 ratings, average: 4,33 out of 5)

Private household plot is best place for rest and work. To have a good rest in nature, mankind has come up with many types different devices, for example, a swing or a hammock. The best comfortable piece of furniture can be considered a chair. But one addition can be made to its design that will make it more convenient. Similar model helps to relax all the muscles of the body, and slow and monotonous rocking encourages long reflections.

The design of the rocking chair has gained immense popularity in the world. That is why, since its invention, many rocking chair options. Masters say that making a chair with your own hands is quite simple.

What rocking chairs exist for giving

To make a universal model of a rocking chair for a summer residence, a willow vine will be needed. The unique and simple design will look great against the backdrop of a variety of greenery and goes well with the decor of the gazebo or country house. The main disadvantage of such a durable and light object interior can be considered fear a large number moisture.

Rattan is a very flexible liana. which grows in Asian countries. This plant is also used to weave unique and beautiful rocking chairs. Their beauty is not inferior to willow products, but the strength is much worse. Fastening materials made of metal are not used in the manufacture of rattan furniture. It is customary to make connections only with the help of high-quality knitting and glue for wood.

When it comes to service life and great strength rocking chairs, then best example are models made of metal parts. A unique lace chair is able to decorate absolutely any suburban area. Rocking chairs should be used not only as furniture for a country house. The main advantage of the product for office work considered to be its solidity and representativeness. Now there are models of rocking chairs from famous designers, which are made in various modern styles.

Many modern designs these pieces of furniture have special uniqueness. Together with conventional models rocking chairs, they can guarantee their owner great comfort and independence from conventional energy sources. A similar piece of furniture that is equipped with small solar panels, makes it possible to free time with benefit and comfort.

How to make a rocking chair with your own hands

The armchair in its design has much in common with the sofa. When a lot of pillows are placed on such a piece of furniture or a blanket is thrown over, it is impossible to find anything better for relaxing in a country house. Next, the process of assembling a rocking chair from plywood with your own hands will be described in detail.

DIY rocking chair tools

Making a unique rocking chair is quite simple. By purchasing good materials and having the right tools, you can assemble this piece of furniture yourself in a small amount of time. To assemble a rocking chair you will need the following tools:

Good organization of the assembly process assumes that absolutely everything necessary tools will be located near the workplace.

DIY rocking chair: drawings

Every responsible work must begin with detailed drawing, which is needed in order not to make a mistake in required quantity building materials. And also a high-quality drawing can be easily found on the net. On a special metric grid with a step of no more than 10 centimeters, there is a template for the side parts of the rocking chair. The best option would be to transfer the drawing to a large sheet of paper and make a pattern, with which it will be convenient to transfer the outline of the product to plywood.

In this work, small inaccuracies can be tolerated. But all sidewalls must necessarily be the same. There should be no protruding corners on the lower rolling side of the rocking chair.

Making blanks for a rocking chair made of wood

To make special tsargovy screeds and sidewalls, plywood of the highest class with a thickness of at least 3 centimeters will be needed. Side elements should be cut out electric jigsaw according to the pattern. Three tsars should have a size of 810 by 125 millimeters.

Next, it is worth cutting blanks from wooden bars, which in the future will make up the surface of the back and seat of a unique chair. For this purpose, a wooden beam measuring 50 by 25 millimeters is well suited. From it you need to cut 36 blanks of 1250 millimeters. Before you buy the material you need for work, you should find out which standard length wooden beam at your nearest hardware store.

The total length of the beam, which is needed for the manufacture of the product, is quite simply calculated on the calculator. It is necessary to observe the multiplicity so that when cutting the workpieces, a small amount of the remaining material remains. In this case optimal solution there will be a decrease in the size of the rocking chair. For example, if the standard length of a wooden beam is 2.5 meters, then one workpiece will be 1240 millimeters, because it is necessary to subtract the thickness of the cut and further processing.

With fasteners, everything is much easier. To make a wooden rocking chair you will need:

  • 14 special confirmations measuring 5 by 125 millimeters;
  • 150 wood screws 4 x 50 mm.

In this way, preparatory stage can be considered completed. However, it will still be necessary to work hard to make a unique rocking chair. Additionally, you may need the following materials:

  • high-quality drying oil;
  • varnish for wood;
  • liquid putty;
  • antiseptic against a variety of pests.

Processing the details of the future rocking chair

Next, you can start sanding the manufactured elements of the chair and removing small chamfers from them. When the grinder has great power and there is experience with it, then such a process does not take much time. Considering that the furniture will often be on outdoors, costs pay great attention to the ends of the parts to ensure their protection from moisture, which will constantly affect them.

All ends of the blanks must be well saturated with hot drying oil, and the longitudinal fibers of the wood on them should be slightly flattened with a hammer. Thus, moisture will not cause great harm rocking chair. This procedure for the ends of the product must be carried out several times.

Assembling a homemade chair

In this species country furniture there are no specific assembly standards and rules. Special holes for the drawers should be marked so that it is convenient to assemble the rocking chair. The main elements of a comfortable chair are:

  • headboard;
  • outer arc;
  • sidewalls;
  • foot.

Special drawers fastened to the sidewalls with euro screws. To do this job, you need to make high-quality markings on the sidewalls, and then combine the two sidewalls. Further, in their planes it is worth drilling through hole using a wood drill with a diameter of 8 millimeters. To make holes in the end of the tsarg, it is necessary to use a wood drill with a diameter of 6 millimeters. Now you need to pull the frame of the product with the help of confirmations.

Next, you need to make holes in the wooden blocks that will form the back and seat of the rocking chair. There should be 35 blanks. It is necessary to make 4 through holes in each bar. As a result, it should get 140 identical holes. To simplify this work, it is worth using a special conductor. This is the name of the marking device. a large number identical products.

Making it is pretty easy. A small piece of wooden beam is taken, but not less than 300 millimeters long. It is necessary to drill through holes for the template in it, the diameter of which must correspond to the size of the construction pencil for marking. From the end and side of such a device, you need to nail small pieces of plywood, which will act as a limiter. This will prevent you from making mistakes when marking holes.

Such a conductor can be used to mark through holes, but it is absolutely impossible to drill through it, since the template holes will be broken with a drill and the workpieces will have to be re-marked. However, you can use a 4 x 35 mm wood drill with a countersink. In this case, it is possible to make a through hole of the size you need in the marked part.

There must be a gap between the wooden blocks at least 17 millimeters. To avoid distortions, it is necessary to mark on the sidewalls of the product a distance corresponding to 6 bars together with the necessary intervals, and additionally check the matching of the templates in size. When they completely match, then you can continue to assemble the rocking chair. If the sizes do not match, it is worth making adjustments to the blanks. A modern self-tapping screw for wood fixes euro plywood well. However, if we take into account the fact that the fastening frequency is very large, then it is necessary to use a wood drill with a diameter of 3 mm.

Rocking chair finishing

It is necessary to carefully putty holes from self-tapping screws. Further, it is necessary to treat the product with a special antiseptic and cover it several times with waterproof varnish. This work should be done very carefully and carefully. After thorough drying of the rocking chair, you can begin to use it.

How to make a metal rocking chair yourself: drawings

Metal is pretty difficult to process material. When there is no experience in forging or specific equipment for the production of bent products, then only simple armchairs rocking chairs. However, their design can be quite interesting. First, a product frame is assembled from a metal corner or profile.

Next, all blanks must be processed anti-corrosion composition. hammer paints are now very popular. The decoration decor depends on the preferences of the master. For example, the seat can be made of wooden planks or covered with soft cloth. To decorate a rocking chair, it is worth making small pillows for the back and seat, and on top cover everything with a large removable cover. Sometimes a metal frame is braided large quantity willow vine. For this work, theoretical skills in wicker weaving will be required, which are worth learning from the numerous videos on the net.

The rocking chair in most people is associated with rest and relaxation. Imagination draws a veranda of a country house, a warm blanket and a glass of wine. Is it possible to make this piece of furniture, a synonym for a measured life, with your own hands? After reading this article, even a novice master can easily cope with this task.

  • glider;
  • classic on skids.

Each of the types has a number of features, so we will consider them in more detail.

Glider (with pendulum mechanism)

This type of furniture has a fixed base, and swinging occurs with the help of a pendulum mechanism. It has a number of advantages over the classic one, but the main plus is its silent operation. That is why it is often purchased by mothers for feeding and rocking babies.

Classic on skids

This type of rocking chair is known to everyone, but not everyone knows what big variety subspecies of this piece of furniture exists.

  1. On simple runners of constant curvature (radius).

    Radius skids - the simplest and most common type of support

    However, it is worth knowing that this is not the safest design option. Professionals make to order, as a rule, rocking chairs on skids not of constant, but of variable curvature, which are calculated taking into account the height and weight of users. It is these models that have the lowest risk of capsizing.

  2. On elliptical skids with tilt limiters.
  3. On springs.
  4. Roly-up.

Armchairs for home and garden

In the house it is better to use products from environmentally friendly clean materials not too heavy so as not to damage the flooring. Size also matters if your apartment is not too big. Most suitable option- plastic and wood products. Wicker furniture is also suitable, but not always appropriate in an urban interior.

If you plan to use furniture under open sky, then it is necessary to take into account some points: how resistant is the material to moisture, exposure to the sun, is it easy to wash. With a certain preparation, a product from almost any material can be used on the street - forged, plastic, wooden models. Designs with an awning from the sun are relevant on hot days.

You can also make original rocking chairs from chairs that have long been going to be repaired.

Is it possible to assemble a pendulum mechanism for a sliding chair on your own

Pendulum design moves upper part armchair relative to its base. To make it yourself you need detailed diagram. This is not an easy job. But the principle of operation of the mechanism is always the same. For the simplest design you will need:

  • 4 bars of the same length and two - larger (sizes are chosen depending on the design scheme);
  • 8 bearing nuts and washers.

Instruction:

  1. Assemble the bars and drill one hole into them at each end for the bearings.
  2. Make an end beam (it holds the weight of the entire sliding structure):
  3. Attach each end part to two bars. This will be a simple pendulum mechanism. Then it is connected to the base of the chair and the seat. An example of the finished design is below.

Rocking chair made of plastic (polypropylene) pipes: diagram and procedure

The chair can also be made from shaped metal or simple water pipes. For work you will need:

  • plastic pipes with a diameter of 25 mm (for sidewalls) and 20 mm (for transverse elements);
  • drill and apparatus for welding pipes;
  • fittings with a section of 15 mm (inserted into pipes to enhance the stability of the chair);
  • fittings for corner connections(2 pcs for 90° and 6 pcs for 45°);
  • pipe plugs;
  • pencil, ruler.

Instruction:

To make the chair comfortable, you need to fix it on the frame foam mattress 50 mm thick. To do this, you need a cover with ties, which is easy to sew on your own (on a typewriter or even by hand).

You can give the plastic pipe a rounded shape using hot sand. To do this, the sand is heated in an oven to 95-130 ° C, a plug is inserted into one end of the part, the tube is filled with sand, given the desired shape and waiting for cooling.

The desire and basic skills to work with the tool are all that is needed to independently build a comfortable and beautiful rocking chair for home or summer cottage. The described instructions will help you do it correctly and quickly.

O beneficial effect rest in a rocking chair written a lot. It also helps to concentrate during intellectual work. Finally, it's just convenient, pumping out, to take books from the rack behind your back or a cup of coffee with coffee table. The prices of ready-made rocking chairs, as it should be in a consumer society, react to such advantages in their own adequate way: a rocking chair for 5,000 rubles. it's still cheap. And the people are artisans and also respond adequately in their own way: those who want to make a rocking chair with their own hands arrive. However, the rocking chair differs from other pieces of furniture, firstly, in that the whole thing moves and sways. Secondly, so that it does not turn from a rocking chair into a kicker or a tipper, the entire product with the person seated in it must have an exact balance, which must be maintained within acceptable limits for riders. different weight and builds. This publication is devoted to the consideration of questions on how to achieve the required qualities of a rocking chair.

Types of rocking chairs

It is necessary to be consistent with your own requests already at the stage of choosing a prototype. There are several types of rocking chairs, oriented to users with different habits and needs. The main types of rocking chairs are shown in the photo. Rocking chairs on simple radius skids (arcs, rocker arms, skis) were the first to appear in everyday life. They are in use to this day, both in modern and classical form, pos. 1 and 2. Their main advantage is constructive and technological simplicity.

Smoothness and softness of swinging are provided by radius skids only at relatively small swinging, and in case of strong swinging they do not guarantee against tipping over. Therefore, rocking chairs "on the radii" are made with a low landing, which ensures a large excess of the center of the generatrix of the circle (CO) over the common center of gravity (CG); see below for more details on the kinematics of rocking chairs. If a seat of normal height is required, then the skids are equipped with chippers, pos. 3. The shocks of the fenders on the floor are noticeably given off at the "fifth point", and in any case, you have to get out of the rocking chair on the radius skids, somewhat strained.

Note: swinging stability with a slightly larger amplitude at a normal landing height is provided by rocking chairs on radius skids with a closing horizontal arc, see fig. on right. But, suddenly the limit is reached, the supporting surface is instantly reduced to a point and a sharp push in the back follows.

Overturning is excluded in rocking chairs on skids of variable curvature, pos. 4. All of them are quite comfortable for riders of different builds. They themselves gently land the seated and leaning forward rider of a rocking chair of the nirvana type on runners of variable curvature, pos. 5 and 6. It is also possible, by changing the progression indicator in the law of change of the generating radius (also see about kinematics), to design them for any, within acceptable limits, landing height.

Note: mothers with a baby give good rest with the complete unity of the souls of the rocking cradle. Reliable rocking chairs with a cradle are made only on skids of variable curvature, see fig. on right. Otherwise, suddenly the little one will get worried and the mother will start up, and you can somersault together. Which is just dangerous for a baby.

Nirvana rocking chairs on elliptical skids, pos. 7, provide a truly blissful slight rocking, but do not prevent tipping over during strong swinging, therefore they are equipped with chippers; the front is often combined with a footboard. Garden rocking chairs with an awning on ellipses never tip over, pos. eight.

Nirvana rocking chairs on springs, see fig. on the left, swing as gently as on ellipses, because mechanical characteristic progressive spring. But it is difficult to make a spring chair with your own hands: either high-quality boards of special types of wood (teak, boxwood, dogwood) or rubberized so as not to scratch the floor, a strip of spring steel are required. In addition, dirt accumulates in the gap between the spring and the skid and it can be very painful to pinch your finger in it. For the last reasons, now spring chairs are very rare for sale.

Rocking chair 3 in 1

Finally, there are also multifunctional rocking chairs "3 in 1" on skids with smooth kinks, see fig. on right. With a direct landing, this is a regular chair; leaning back, it can be switched to the rocking chair mode at radii, and leaning back even more, it can be turned into a sunbed. But the dimensions of the 3 in 1 rocking chair are too big for apartments below the business class, and the transitions from mode to mode are accompanied by quite sensitive shocks. In unsuccessful models, for this you have to either get up at all, or twitch, wriggle and fidget like a puppet on strings. Therefore, rocking chairs 3 in 1 are a piece of furniture for an amateur.

To start

Without any special claims, just to relax after work, a rocking chair on radius skids will help. Blueprints simple sample, made, with the exception of skids, only from straight-line parts, are given in fig. To the cottage, veranda or garden, this chair can be made in half a day, using only a jigsaw, a drill and a couple wrenches(assembly - on bolts). And having swayed to your heart’s content, it’s possible to already think about home rocking chair for the more sophisticated; then you need a tool and knowledge more thoroughly.

How does it swing?

Most home crafters make rocking chairs according to ready-made drawings, but prototypes often turn out to be designed and tailored to a specific person and an exact replica is not so convenient. Therefore, before making a rocking chair, it is necessary to obtain at least initial information about its kinematics.

The CG of an upright person of normal build is located on the border of the lower back and sacrum with inside spinal column. In a seated individual, it is somewhat mixed forward and even less down. In the seat-rider system, the overall CG is shifted back almost to the starting position and a little further down. The downward displacement of the general CG for the design of a rocking chair is not particularly significant, and it can be assumed that the projection of the general CG on the supporting surface (floor) is approximately the same as that of a standing person. In the future, the resulting error can be easily compensated by the final balancing of the chair, see below.

The location of the central heating element vertically relative to the central heating unit has a much stronger effect on the stability and comfort of the rocking chair; the latter is the determining value in the design of rocking chairs on skids with variable curvature. If the CG and the CG coincide, this is an indifferent equilibrium: for any physically possible inclination of the chair, the projection of the CG on the floor falls on the point of contact of the skids O, pos. 1 and 1a in Figs. The chair does not rock, and if you lean back too much - an instant somersault with the risk of breaking your neck. Fortunately, the exact coincidence of DH and DH is possible only theoretically.

If the CG is higher than the CG, then its projection “runs away” outward, backward or forward, from the point of contact with any inclination. At the slightest inclination, the overturning moment Mo occurs (pos. 2 and 2a), the rocker turns out to be unstable. To avoid such a situation for a family rocking chair, it is calculated and balanced for the tallest, heaviest and pot-bellied rider possible so that its CO is 450 mm or more higher than the CO. Then, when the chair is tilted, t. O will “run away” from the CG projection, the restoring moment Mv will constantly act (pos. 3 and 3a) and the chair will not tip over when swinging within acceptable limits. For those who are smaller, the excess of the CO over the CO will turn out to be too big, and the rocking will be harsh, but this can be easily compensated with pillows under the back and seat. In general, the lower the elevation of the CO above the CO, the softer and smoother the rocking, but the probability of tipping over, sharply straightening up and sitting up in the chair, is higher. Therefore, it is better for novice carpenters to ask for an excess of CO in the range of 600-700 mm.

Note: if it is impossible to determine the position of the CG of the largest of the riders (say, in its absence), the radius of the generatrix of the circle R is taken equal to the average height of the users minus 5 cm.

There is no need to drag your own pillows with you into a chair on runners of variable curvature: it will itself rise to the position of greatest comfort. At the same time, the healthy man will lean back more, and the slender one will be sitting straighter. When swinging back, t. O will run away from the CG projection the farther, the greater the angle of inclination, and it simply will not work to swing before tipping over. And if you “pump” forward, which is generally difficult, the chair will smoothly land the hyperactive person on the floor: where do you want to rest? Get up, do something.

To construct a profile of skids of variable curvature, the radius of the generatrix of the circle (it is determined as in the previous case) will, firstly, have to be rotated several times by a fixed angle α; usually take α = 10 degrees. Secondly, to build the rear branch of the snake, R is increased at each turn according to the law geometric progression with index k=1.02-1.03. That is, it will be (see pos. 4 of the figure) R1 = kR; R2 = kR1; R3 = kR2; R4 = kR3 etc. if required. In fact, R changes according to a certain trigonometric function, but for furniture accuracy and the size of a rocking chair, it is more convenient to replace it with a progression, it is easier to count this way.

The construction of the anterior branch is carried out at a constant R, but with each turn of the generatrix of the circle, the CO is raised vertically (ibid., at pos. 4 of the figure). The initial elevation Δh1 is taken equal to 2-3% R, i.e. (0.02-0.03)R, and the subsequent ones also follow a geometric progression with the same indicator as for the back branch. Δh1 in this case, the value is quite critical; its smaller value should be taken for thin ones, and the larger one for thick ones.

In conclusion, the obtained points are connected using a smooth curve pattern. Do not be embarrassed if the tangents to it turn out to be not perpendicular to the radii: in order for the chair to be stable, it must be on a reverse slope at every moment of rocking. When building, it is desirable to take a scale no smaller than 1:5.

Note: if a nirvana chair is being designed, but the front ascending branch of its runners will be an ellipse arc (green dotted line in pos. 4), tangent to the constructed profile of the runner in point I in the same place.

Final balancing

It is unlikely that a novice master will have a rocking chair immediately comfortable enough. Most likely, the product will need to be balanced. If the chair does not sway well, and shoves when leaving it, you need to weight the rear overhang. The easiest way to do this is to connect the ends of the rear branches of the skids with a low U-shaped beam of boards, with a notch facing down. Loads are placed in the recess. The arm of the lever in this case is long, so the weights do not have to be suspended. Another option, depending on the design, is a transverse tube-beam with a load inside. But in the process of balancing it will have to be removed and put back several times. If the rocking chair strives to fall back, you need to weight the front overhang. The easiest way to do this is by placing a footboard and attaching weights to its underside.

About materials

Rocking chairs are made mainly of wood. Metal, for all its manufacturability, low waste and greater durability in the open air, is too heavy. The influence of the chair on the overall CG is significant, the moment of inertia of the system is large and, as a result, the swaying is too sharp. Or you have to set an extremely small initial elevation of the DH above the DH, risking that the rocking chair will tip over under someone. However, we will return to metal rocking chairs in the course of considering individual samples.

Plywood is a completely different matter, especially for beginner carpenters. Firstly, when making the parts of the rocking chair with 3-layer glued ones, it is possible only with the help of an electric jigsaw to make accurate and durable tenon-groove joints, on the left in the figure, if you follow the following. regulations:

  • Plywood of the middle layer is taken twice as thick as for the extreme ones. For example, if you need a total thickness of 20 mm, then glue 5-10-5 mm.
  • Assemble parts from blanks on a 2-component waterproof adhesive. If on PVA - be sure to reinforce with small nails.
  • The joints are assembled with gluing (wedging in this case is unacceptable) and reinforced with diagonal pairs of self-tapping screws from 2 sides.
  • The supporting surfaces are protected with overlays made of thin (6-10 mm) slats of hard durable wood or dense sheet rubber 4-5 mm thick. Plywood under concentrated load splits very well from the end.

Secondly, plywood makes it possible to apply non-standard technical solutions, for example. as on the right in Fig. Such a plywood rocking bowl can be made using, again, only a jigsaw. Comfort is high, stability is absolute, and can serve as a hanging hammock or swing chair. The thickness of the lamella boards is from 12 mm; connecting half washers on the poles - from 24 mm.

Note: in any case, the finished plywood rocking chair must be impregnated twice with a water-polymer emulsion or liquid acrylic varnish on the water based. This will not only increase the strength of the product and its resistance to external influences, but also remove excess residual stresses in joints and bent parts.

How to put overlays

Wear-resistant wooden pads on the runners of the rocking chair are installed next. way:

  1. We turn the chair upside down;
  2. Thoroughly warm the bar-blank with a building hair dryer;
  3. We lay the workpiece on the skid and tightly wrap it along the entire length with cotton tape. Don't burn yourself, the wood is very hot!
  4. We also grab the second blank on another runner;
  5. After the strips have completely cooled down, we remove the bandages from the braid and glue the PVA overlays on wood or with 2-component glue;
  6. We attach the ends of the slats with small nails until the overlays fit snugly along the entire length. We put washers or pieces of plywood under the nail heads;
  7. After the glue has completely dried (2-3 days), we remove the temporary fasteners. We drill blind holes for self-tapping screws and fasten the ends completely;
  8. We rub holes with fastener heads with putty from sawdust of the same tree, densely mixed with PVA.

Note: metal hardware linings need to be fixed only at the ends. Otherwise, when the lining is abraded during use, the fastener heads will stick out and begin to scratch the floor.

Examples of rocking chairs

metal

Let's start the review of rocking chairs with metal ones, because. making rocking chairs out of it is justified in a few cases. Forged rocking chairs imitating classic wicker or rattan wicker, both requiring special equipment, a forge, etc. qualifications, do not touch. But a metal rocking chair "under the braid" can be made by welding from profile pipe; preferably - elliptical section. In this case, it is necessary to choose the kinematic scheme of the nirvana rocking chair as the least sensitive to the excessive elevation of the CO above the CO, it also corresponds well to the design of the wicker rockers, see fig. The seat, in order not to increase the moment of inertia, is made of braided cables, belts, etc.

It also makes sense to make garden rocking chairs out of metal, see below, due to its strength and wear resistance. But a welded frame like the one in pos. 1 fig. on the right - the solution is not optimal, too complicated, labor- and material-intensive. It is much easier to make a steel frame of a garden rocking chair of the Concept type, pos. 2. Pipe - round from 40x2. Actually the bed can be sewn like a hammock; balancing - by changing its tension and, accordingly, sagging. As a result, labor and costs are much less than for repeating the established forms of rocking chairs coming “from the tree”, and comfort is no worse.

Another interesting option is visible here: the frame of a rocking chair A concept from ... gymnastic hoops. Only not aluminum or propylene, but carbon fiber (carbon). Strength - monstrous, durability - absolute, weight - miserable. What, however, can not be said about the cost.

Vanka-vstanka

AT recent times garden rocking chairs - tumblers - gained popularity. If you lean back completely in this and tuck your legs in, it collapses back at almost 90 degrees without losing stability; the rider will be lying on his back with his knees at the zenith. And if you stretch your legs forward, the rocking chair - roly-poly-stand-up becomes in the usual position and then you can sway as always.

The roly-poly toy with a spherical bottom sways quite sharply. Comfortable swinging of the roly-poly rocking chair is achieved by profiling its runners according to a complex law. It will not work to build their sidewalls “in a school way”, as described above. It is necessary to be guided by proven samples and draw markup on a grid, see fig. The variant on the inset, with a sheathing of planks 30-40 mm thick, is more expensive, but less laborious. It also allows you to increase the length of the rocking chair by placing intermediate skids.

Note: wooden balls are mounted on the protruding ends of the longer rods (1050 mm) and form handles for swinging and carrying.

To wallow with your heels in the sky, throwing your hands behind your head and admiring through the trembling foliage the clouds floating in the blue heights is a heavenly pleasure, but not for everyone. It is desirable for someone to look more impressive while relaxing. This is more suitable garden bench- rocking chair, see fig. It is a bit difficult to swing on it, its own moment of inertia is large, but it also swings for a long time. The maximum span between supports with skids is 750 mm with 40 mm thick lathing. The back paneling is decorative.

Sunbed with awning

Both those and other requests will be satisfied by a garden rocking chair on elliptical runners and with an awning. The dimensions of its sidewalls are given in fig. their material is 24 mm plywood. The bed width is up to 900 mm, its sheathing is made of slats 50x50. The places of the sidewalls, indicated by gray circles, are connected by round wooden crossbars with a diameter of 60 mm or more.

Here we are not talking about rocking horses, they are toys, not furniture. But it’s also not harmful for children to relax, swaying, so it makes sense to make a rocking chair for a child. Its proportions will be slightly different than for adults, due to the influence of the square-cube law.

The device of a child rocking chair, its assembly diagram and specification of parts are given in fig; material is wood. It will not be difficult for a more or less experienced home craftsman to build a rocking chair for a child, guided by these data, and beginners can first watch a master class on making almost the same children's rocking chair.

The rocking chair in most people is associated with home comfort, rest, relaxation. Sitting in it, it's nice to have a cup of coffee, read a book or dream by the fireplace, covered with a blanket, on a long winter evening. Measured swaying soothes, relaxes, gives peace. No wonder everyone loves to swing so much even on regular chairs, often breaking them. But it is not always possible to purchase rocking chairs - they are not cheap. In this case, you can make a thing with your own hands.

Types of rocking chairs

There are many types of rocking chairs. They differ in design, scope, material of manufacture and upholstery, design.

Design variation

Rocking chairs according to the type of structure can be divided into the following types.

  1. On simple radius skids - skis, rocker arms, arcs. Such chairs were the first to appear and are still used today. They are easy to manufacture, but have the disadvantage of tipping over with strong rocking. In this regard, they are made with a low fit for a greater excess of the center of the generatrix of the circle over the center of gravity. There are also varieties with a closing horizontal arc. This model requires the construction of individual drawings, taking into account the height and weight of the person for whom it is intended.
  2. On skids of variable curvature. They have no risk of tipping over. Due to their length, when tilted back, they do not allow the chair to fall, and when tilted forward, they simply push the person out of the seat. When making this model, it is better to use a ready-made drawing, since the process of building it is quite complicated.
  3. On elliptical skids. They roll very softly. They are often equipped with bumpers at the back, a footboard at the front, or springs. At home, a model on springs cannot be made, for this you need special types of wood or a rubberized metal strip.
  4. Glider is a sliding rocking chair. Unlike previous designs, its base remains motionless. It swings due to the installed pendulum mechanism. This piece of furniture is difficult option for the beginner.
  5. Vanka-vstanka - a garden roly-poly chair. Does not lose stability in any position. This is due to the fact that the seat is also a skid. If you lean back strongly, the chair will move to an almost horizontal position, but will not roll over, and with a little effort will return to its original position. It is not easy to build a drawing of such a chair, but you can use the finished one.

The classic rocking chair has the main drawback - the risk of tipping over with strong rocking. Elliptical arms provide a smooth swing On skids of variable curvature, the risk of tipping over is excluded The glider chair will not leave scuff marks on the floor in your home The rocking chair does not lose stability in any position, and on the side it resembles a recumbent person

Variety of materials

In the manufacture of rocking chairs, the following materials can be used.

  1. Wood. Conifers, oak and larch are suitable for this. The master will need experience in woodworking, knowledge of how to connect parts.
  2. Plywood. The best option for a novice craftsman would be plywood. Working with it will require a minimum of skills and tools, all the details can be cut with electric jigsaws.
  3. Vine and rattan. Without the skills to work with these materials, it is better not to take on the job. You will need skills in the field of proper harvesting, drying and processing of vines, as well as weaving skills. In addition, it is worth considering that the rattan palm does not grow in Russia, its homeland is Indonesia and the Philippines.
  4. Metal. Products from it are durable, strong, but have a lot of weight. To work with this material, special welding or forging skills are required, as well as pipe bending equipment if the chair is made from pipes. As a rule, the frame is made of metal, and the seat is made of wood. Such a chair in an apartment can damage the floor, and it looks more appropriate in a country house or a country house.
  5. profile pipes. Suitable for making elliptical arches. This material, like any metal, also requires welding skills.
  6. Plastic pipes. Lightweight, durable and easy to work with. All you need is fittings and a blowtorch. Moreover, the cost of such a product is low.

Applications

Depending on the place of use, rocking chairs are divided into items for home or outdoor use. If you plan to use the product outdoors (dacha, garden plot), consider that the material will be affected Sun rays, precipitation, air temperature.

The metal is not afraid of moisture changes. It only needs to be treated with an anti-corrosion compound. Due to the large weight, it is better to put such a chair on a stone base. It will push through loose earth or a wooden podium. The best option for the street - metal product with wooden seat or with removable cushions.

Chairs made of wood must be treated with a waterproof coating. This must be done especially carefully if the product is made of plywood. Before assembly, hot drying oil is applied to the ends of the parts, and then they are slightly flattened with a hammer so that moisture does not penetrate inside. After this procedure, the elements are coated twice with waterproof varnish.

Wooden rocking chairs should not be kept outdoors all the time. Otherwise, the product may lose its original appearance.

most successful street option are chairs made of plastic. They do not rot, are not afraid of the sun and wind, do not require protective coating. Such products are durable and lightweight, they can be moved to any place if necessary.

You should not use chairs with soft upholstery on the street, it is better to cover them with a blanket or put removable pillows. The upholstery will get wet in the rain and deteriorate.

We turn the most ordinary chair into a rocking chair

The easiest option to get a rocking chair quickly and at no cost is to make it from an old but sturdy chair or armchair. You only need to make a couple of skids. For structural stability and to prevent tipping, the center of gravity must be shifted down. To do this, the legs need to be filed under the arcs, on which a chair or armchair will be attached in the future.

Instructions for making a vanka-vstanka

To make this chair yourself, it is better to use plywood. A drawing can be built by making calculations with your own hands, or you can use it already ready scheme.

We prepare tools and materials

Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare materials and tools. You may need:

  • electric jigsaw with wood files;
  • disc grinder with a set of nozzles of various grain sizes;
  • screwdriver or drill;
  • a hammer;
  • brush;
  • plywood sheet 20-30 mm thick;
  • bar 50x25 mm for cladding;
  • 3 connecting bars 30x50 mm;
  • self-tapping screws or confirmants;
  • wood glue;
  • antiseptic for wood;
  • primer or drying oil;
  • dye;
  • roulette;
  • pencil;
  • graph paper.

Now you have everything you need. Before proceeding to the next step, treat the plywood sheet with an antiseptic. While you are working on the drawing, it will dry out.

We draw a diagram

The design of the vanka-vstanka does not require taking into account the individual parameters of future users. If you wish, you can amend the finished scheme. For example, if necessary, such a chair can be made double. Thus, we will assume that you have a drawing.

We transfer it to graph paper, and then to thick paper in full size details. We cut out the patterns and draw the sidewalls. We will make them from plywood, fasteners - from bars, sheathing - from rails.

Both sidewalls must be exactly the same, there must be no bulges and bumps on the rocking surface, the line must be smooth!

We make parts

With an electric jigsaw, he cuts sidewalls from plywood, from bars - connecting drawers. The best connection details of the chair - studded. If it is provided for by the drawing, we make spikes and cuts for them in the sidewalls. We cut the facing plank from the rails. To keep as few scraps as possible, when choosing a rail, observe the multiplicity of their sizes to the finished bar. If there is a remainder, save them, they will be useful to you when the product needs to be repaired.

All parts are sanded, sanded, and then chamfered. We carefully process the ends. We slightly break their fibers with a hammer so that moisture does not penetrate into them. All elements must be primed and painted, the ends - twice.

Chair assembly

We connect the sidewalls with bar-bars. If you have a spiked connection, then insert the spikes into the cuts under them, having previously smeared them with wood glue. If not, then we mark the joints on the sidewalls, make holes with an 8 mm drill, and 5 mm at the ends of the bars. We tighten with the help of confirmants - euro screws.

Now it remains only to attach the facing strips. In order for them to lie flat, they must first be marked. Each board should have 4 marks, that is, 2 on each side. To facilitate the work, you can make a template from trimming the rail by drilling 2 holes in it, then the work will go much faster.

To prevent the strips from cracking during fastening, drill holes along the marks with a thin drill and screw them to the sidewall with self-tapping screws. The distance between the rails should be 15 mm.

Cover the product with primer and paint. The rocking chair is ready, you can enjoy it.

Making a chair out of wood

Wood is a more complex material than plywood. There are several options for drawings of wooden rocking chairs.

The product can be without armrests and have a back that repeats the curves of the back.

If you do not have sufficient skills in working with wood, you can make a chair, the elements of which are straight lines. The only exceptions are arcs.

The order of work in the manufacture of such a chair is the same as that of a plywood model.

  1. We make drawings and patterns.
  2. We cut out the material. A board 3000x200x40 mm will go to the runners, 3000x100x20 mm to the rest of the parts.
  3. Sanding and sanding.
  4. We process with a primer and paint all the elements.
  5. We outline the connection points of the parts, drill holes for the bolts.
  6. We make assembly.
  7. We put a soft pillow and swing.

We use the pendulum mechanism in the manufacture of the glider

To make such a chair, you need to have good drawings. Although, there are craftsmen who build them on their own, taking measurements from factory products. The pendulum mechanism is assembled on ball bearings. This applies to both metal and wooden structures. The seat should not be attached to the base, but suspended from it. This allows the chair to swing in a horizontal plane.

We make a wicker chair from a vine

Wicker products are very popular. If you know how to weave from a vine, you can make such a chair at home. However, the process of its manufacture is quite long, it requires patience and effort.

It should be noted that the wicker chair should be comfortable and durable. Its flexibility is achieved due to the vine, which is also an environmentally friendly material.

If one person managed to create some thing, then another will certainly be able to repeat it. All you need is a desire and strict adherence to the instructions. And it doesn't matter what your chair is made of. If the soul is invested in the work, the result will bring joy.

A do-it-yourself rocking chair made by many craftsmen will cost less than a store product. Self-made furniture will be better and more environmentally friendly, you can think over your design and design concept. The rocking chair will be a good addition to the interior design of the room, a device that will calm you down, give you the mood to work, and relax. Such a product will become indispensable when rocking a child. For the baby himself, such a chair is a real swing.

If a person is not related to carpentry, then a natural question arises: how to make a rocking chair with your own hands? Initially, it is worth deciding on the type of rocking chair, there are several of them. There are types according to the design features:

  • Rocking chair, which has radius skids. This model is classic and most popular. It has low landing, since on rounded "radii" it is very difficult to keep balance when swinging.
  • Armchair with runners of variable curvature. In this case, the "radii" do not represent part of the roundness, which means that the wobble can have a large amplitude. In this case, the use will be safer and more comfortable.
  • Armchair nirvana. There are two subtypes: elliptical and spring. The former is considered unsafe, as tipping over often occurs, but the swing is soft and smooth. Spring models are more adapted to widespread use, but making a rocking chair with your own hands for such an upgrade requires skills and experience.
  • Rocking chairs 3 in 1. All three modes are presented here: chair, rocking chair, sunbed. Depending on the degree of reclining on the back of the structure, the position of the body is determined. Multifunctional furniture but oversized.

The presented design options can be made from almost any material: wood, metal, wicker, rattan. The seat can be hard, soft or a combination. Materials can be combined, and in some models even necessary. Thanks to the photo on the Internet, you can choose your favorite model of the product.

braided pattern

It is quite difficult to make furniture from a wicker or rattan with your own hands. Rattan is an expensive material, but a product made from it has a long service life, and the body is more resistant to mechanical stress. The same cannot be said about the vine, but it is more accessible and malleable in work.

To create original wicker furniture, you can view the master class. Such instructions will be quite enough to implement the project. First, the material is prepared:

1. Rattan cannot be assembled on your own - it is a tough liana that grows in certain areas of America. The vine is harvested independently: the branches are harvested throughout the year. Length and thickness may vary. When the vine is harvested, it is placed vertically outside to dry.

2. Processing of rods consists in stripping. The branches are placed in a bath of warm water, where the material should spend about 12 hours. The branches will become elastic. When each twig begins to bend well, then you can remove the bark from them.

3. To continue working, you need to give each element the appropriate form. Thick branches are fixed in clamps in the appropriate position, and thin branches are divided into several parts, which are called taverns, with the help of a splitter.

4. Each shank must be passed through a press so that they become flat and fit for weaving.

5. The prepared vine is placed in a dryer for three days, where the shape of each element of the future product is fixed. Only from such a vine can a rocking chair be made.

The next step will be the production itself:

1. First, a frame is made from thick branches or wooden planks. The sizes are determined independently. All parts are fixed with nails or wire. The item is placed in the dryer for several days.

Frame is being made

2. The braid consists in pasting the back and seat with tatters. Furniture glue is applied to the body, which will serve as an additional connection. The taverns themselves braid the bars of the crate in a checkerboard pattern.

Weave the back and seat

3. When the body is ready, the skids are attached and the product is tested. The chair needs to be slightly rocked, if this process proceeds easily, and it does not tip over during swinging, then the center of gravity is determined correctly.

4. The last step is to open the vines with furniture varnish.

The made rocking chair can be used in the country house, veranda, balcony, garden, hallway. In addition to positive feelings during the use of this piece of furniture, this element will become a wonderful authentic design.

Wooden rocking chair

Making a rocking chair with your own hands from wood is quite simple, the main thing is to make the appropriate preparation. If such work is done for the first time, then a master class will help in this. . First, prepare the tools:

  • wood saws, jigsaw;
  • grinder or sandpaper;
  • screwdriver;
  • set of drills;
  • measuring tape;
  • a hammer;
  • putty knife;
  • level;
  • construction angle;
  • brushes, pencil.

Material preparation is also important. The wooden rocking chair is made partly from plywood. The remaining wooden parts are best selected from an elastic material. It's great if it's flannel.

After collecting the tools and material, you can get to work. Initially, a drawing of a rocking chair is made, performed in accordance with the parameters of the future product. The diagram is an exact copy, but on a reduced scale:

1. From plywood with your own hands, you need to cut out the side elements, which are semicircular bases with grooves for flannels. A jigsaw, wood saws and a grinder will come in handy here.

Making sidewalls

2. Flannels are being prepared, you can make them from plywood with your own hands, but on condition that the plywood is at least 30 millimeters thick and flexible in its basis.

We make flannels

3. The plywood side parts are interconnected using 30x50x600 mm bars. Crossbars (flanels) are attached to the frame from above with a screwdriver at a distance of 2-3 cm from each other.

Assembling the structure

4. We attach flannels to the frame, for this we use a screwdriver.

We fasten the flannels to the frame

5. A plywood rocking chair is waiting for finishing. Places where there is an attachment of flannels to the sidewalls are covered with putty. When the putty dries, you can varnish the product on wood.

Finishing

A plywood rocking chair can be additionally equipped with other elements. For example, you can make the seat soft. For this on wooden base a foam base is laid, on top of which the fabric is laid.

Metal armchair

There is another class of product - these are metal rocking chairs. Not every master will be able to make such a design, since this requires more serious equipment and skill. Although, it is worth trying to make a rocking chair out of metal with your own hands. This can be done by focusing on the pictures, or by viewing the master class.

For work we need the following components:

  • steel bars;
  • galvanization;
  • steel corners;
  • apparatus for welding;
  • drill with special drills;
  • Bulgarian.

Often, arcs for skids are made from a profile pipe, and corners are cut from the profile itself, which will serve as fasteners. From profiled sheet metal you can make all the necessary elements to create such a design:

1. First, drawings are made according to product design. To do this, you can take a finished chair and transfer this sketch, but besides this, think about how to attach the rounded skids.

2. Steel bars are cut to a length of 1 meter. After that, the frame is welded, to which the rods will be welded. The distance between them is about 1 centimeter. The metal is twisted into an oval.

3. After that, the master must attach the seat to the oval base. The seat itself is made of galvanized steel. Fastening is carried out using bolts, and the holes for them are made using a drill.

4. The final step will be painting and sanding sharp parts.

If we compare the operating conditions of wicker, metal and wooden furniture, then the most universal option is woven. It does not damage the floor surface, is easy to move, can be used in any room and on the street.

You can decorate such an element of furniture with textiles, in particular decorative pillows, quilted bedspreads, warm blankets. Thus, a note of comfort and coziness is introduced into the overall idea.
