The system of science and higher education

Universities

Hungary has 19 state and 7 non-state universities, academies and seminaries, as well as 10 public and 24 private colleges. Degrees

Studying at the first stage of 3 or 4 years will lead to a bachelor's degree (Hungarian alapképzés, English bachelor of science or bachelor of arts). If you decide what you want, you will have to score 180-240 points according to the European ECTS transfer system. Also be prepared for at least one semester of practical training. After completing the II degree - one year or two years (60-120 ECTS) they become a master (Hungarian mesterképzés, English master of science or master of arts). Definitely longer - 5 semesters (150 ECTS) is the training of teachers. The third degree - at least three years - ends with a doctoral degree (Hungarian doktori képzés) or Doctor of Arts. Universities also offer a comprehensive path - 5-6 years of study leading to a master's degree in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, architecture, law and some arts.

Admission - requirements and formalities

Admission procedure and formal requirements. A prerequisite to apply for a place at the university at stage I is only a matriculation certificate. Most universities also require entrance exams. Questionnaires can be submitted both directly to universities and through the website www.felvi.hu (the option will appear after registration on the website). Timing

For directions with the Hungarian language of instruction, documents are accepted, as a rule, twice a year: until February 15 (for the autumn semester) and until September 15 (for the spring semester). Deadlines for accepting applications from those wishing to study at foreign language differ depending on the university - most close the procedure on June 30.

Exams. Exams are required for most courses.

Language skills, certificates

List of destinations with English or German learning increases from year to year (you will find it here). If you have chosen one of these destinations, you will need to submit the appropriate certificate. If it is English, the IELTS certificate (with a score of 5.5) and TOEFL (61 points in the online test, 173 in the computer test) are more often required. Some universities (for example, Szent István University) will still send you to an additional exam in English. To study in Hungarian, you will need to take a one-year course organized by the Balassi Institute.

Resident card

If you plan to stay in Hungary for more than 90 days, you must obtain a residence permit. To do this, you will need a document confirming acceptance to study (letter of acceptance), proof of payment for tuition (if applicable), proof of place of residence (rental agreement or certificate from the hostel), as well as sufficient funds for living (for example, a bank statement) . Tuition and living costs

Education

Most students do not pay tuition because it is funded by the state (the so-called state-funded places). The rest, who are less fortunate or who have exceeded the prescribed period of study, must pay: from 580 to 9700 euros per year (on average 1200 euros) at the university of the 1st stage, and from 640 to 10.8 thousand euros (on average 1500 euros) on the master's program.

Maintenance and accommodation. To live peacefully in Hungary, you will need about 100 thousand forints per month (335 euros at the rate of 1 HUF = 0.0034 euros). This amount will cover the costs associated with accommodation, food or transport. As a rule, the price level in Hungary does not differ from the Polish one: renting an apartment in Budapest will cost 50-60 thousand forints, a travel card - about. 4 thousand forints, a loaf of bread - 270 forints, a bottle of beer - 250 forints, and a movie ticket - 1200 forints. Outside the capital, prices are slightly cheaper. It is better to look for housing in hostels, but the number of places in them is limited. If you decide to look for accommodation, be sure to ask local students for help - discussions with apartment owners in English often end in unpleasant disagreements. Student organizations and universities themselves also help with renting premises.

Scholarships

Only students whose education is financed by the state can count on financial support. Social scholarships (need-based grants) amount to at least 11.9 thousand forints per month, and scientific (merit-based grants) - 5950 forints (1 fortint = 0.014 rubles). Students who pay for their studies themselves can use the student loan system (max. 40,000 forints per month). The loan is repaid within 10 months of the year.

Work for a student

Start

I was born in small town Yuryev-Polsky, which, in principle, cannot be found on the map. Moving from such a city abroad is virtually impossible, unless, of course, you have rich parents, ambition or luck.

Mom always said: “If you don’t study, you will work as a cleaner!” And I studied.

In 2012, I entered the Moscow Pedagogical State University named after M.V. Lenin (Moscow State Pedagogical University), to the paid department of the philological faculty. It was a global revolution. The only thing that upset me was the unjustified money that was spent on education. For myself, I decided that I would enjoy all the benefits of the university.

In 2013, I received approval for a student exchange to Romania, and in 2015, to China. Traveling has taken a toll on me. For 3 years I have visited more than 20 countries, including 9 times in Hungary.

My studies at Moscow State Pedagogical University were coming to an end, and I did not work out with a job in my profession. There was a huge fear - to return to your native city and he moved me the most. And I decided that I would go to a master's program in Hungary.

Preparation for admission

I acted independently, without intermediaries and without additional investments. On the Internet, I found open competitive selections, which were organized by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation. I read all the conditions, weighed it and started working on it. There were many questions. And the main one: can I? To get started, you need to provide:

• Curriculum vitae indicating full name, passport data, education, home address, telephone number;
• Recommendation from the university with the seal of the Russian university;
• copy foreign passport.

Documents passed through Russian ministry, where a decision is made to recommend a student to study abroad or not. But that's not all.

The next step was the choice of a Hungarian university. It was quite easy to choose: all lists are in the public domain. The university application requirements were more academic:

Motivation letter written in English language;
A certificate confirming the language level (each university has its own requirements).
In addition, it was necessary to fill in personal data, send a copy of a foreign passport, a diploma with grades from a previous university, and a medical certificate proving that the future student is not a carrier of an epidemic disease. All this had to be translated into English and notarized.
There were three universities to choose from.

By the way, for applying to Hungary, universities are numbered in the list by priority. This means that if you are approved by the “number 1” university on your list, you are automatically enrolled in it.

Waiting and preparing for the trip

Two universities from my list invited me for an interview. I decided to enroll in international relations, and accordingly, the commission tested my basic knowledge of politics and my command of the English language. I was a little worried, but everything went well.

The worst part is, of course, the waiting. The submission of documents ended at the end of February, the interview was conducted in May, and the results came in mid-July. Indeed, the wait was worth it. I received a scholarship at the Budapest Business School.

The scholarship was quite small, about 40,000 forints (100 euros). And the same amount was given for accommodation. The university also offered free hostel. Since the next step was to apply for a long-term visa already from Hungary, the hostel option made my life much easier. For long-term studies, I had to get a special type D visa. You can get it only at the Hungarian embassy. To apply, you must have:

• Valid passport and its copy;
• Russian passport and its copy;
• Two photos 3x4;
• Invitation from the university and confirmation of receipt of the scholarship;
• A completed application form for a type D visa (downloaded from the official website of the embassy).
• If you received a scholarship from the university, proof of material well-being (bank account and cash flow) is not required, but welcome.

An invitation from a university and a scholarship do not guarantee a visa. However, scholarship holders are exempted from paying duty tax, which is about 80 euros.

Type D visa allows one entry and is valid for 30 days only. Upon arrival in Hungary, I had to come to the migration office and pick up a plastic card, permission to stay in Hungary for 2 years (study time). By the way, a student visa type D entitles you to employment in Hungary. With a residence permit, you can work 26 hours a week during your studies and unlimited quantity during holidays and national holidays.

Moving and cons

The move was easy enough, I knew Budapest well. It is convenient for a Russian to live in Hungary: prices here are lower than in Moscow (with the exception of renting an apartment), there is a large Russian community, our compatriots often meet here and help each other.
After 3 months, I found a job in an international IT company, where we provide technical support employees of Shell-Russia.

However, Hungary is not such a simple country as it seems at first glance: for 2 years of living, I was never able to learn the Hungarian language. Many of my vegetarian friends complain that it is difficult for them here, since half of the Hungarian national cuisine contains meat.
True, as a fan of travel, I cannot fail to note the favorable geographical position of the country and the convenient WIZZAIR low-cost airlines. We often travel with my classmates: both in Hungary and in other countries.

As you can see from my description, studying at Hungarian universities is easy, you can combine study, work and travel. The teachers are quite friendly and understanding. European culture is definitely felt: when students and teachers really cooperate with each other and keep only a formal distance.

Such forms are very motivating: during my studies, I managed to write 3 scientific work, take part in national and international conferences… and, of course, find your way. My master's degree is coming to an end and I'm going to graduate school. My dream is to work in one of European universities teacher. And I think that dreams become a reality, of course, if you really want and strive.

Foreign students can enter a Hungarian university after school upon reaching the age of 18, but there is one condition: knowledge of the language is required. For example, if the program of study will be conducted in English, a potential student must provide a certificate of passing TOEFL (usually at least 510 points for undergraduate admission) or IELTS (often at least 5.5). Programs can be conducted in Hungarian, French, Russian, but more often in German and English. It must be taken into account that the Hungarian language is considered one of the most complex languages in the world. Often, foreign applicants choose to study at one-year preparatory courses and only then enter the university. Courses are organized at every Hungarian university, there are also comprehensive preparatory courses at private educational institutions. They include both language training and an introduction to the future specialty.
After submitting the application, the applicant will be assigned an interview or exam (sometimes both). On university websites, the main topics and tasks of exams are usually indicated. There are no unified tests in Hungary, each university has its own examination tasks.
As a rule, the introductory campaign in Hungarian higher education institutions is held twice a year - in January and September. Acceptance of documents for the autumn semester starts in January, and for the winter semester - in December. Foreign applicants need to take into account that admission to the university is paid for them, it is necessary to pay an entrance fee, an exam fee and textbooks.

Higher education system in Hungary

All universities in Hungary have introduced the Bologna system of education: after three years of study (in some cases, four), the student receives a bachelor's degree, then he can continue his studies in the master's program (2 years), then in doctoral studies (1-3 years). Obtaining a student visa

To obtain a student visa to Hungary, an applicant must provide a document confirming enrollment in a higher educational institution in Hungary. Foreign students - holders of a student visa have the right to work in Hungary. In most European countries there are restrictions on the work of foreign students, but in Hungary there are no restrictions. Children who are 6 years old before May 31 of the current year must enter primary school. Obtaining a certificate is mandatory and free of charge. The main costs are borne by the state. However, parents must purchase textbooks for their children at their own expense.

The school year begins on the first working day in September. Children study 5 days a week. The duration of each lesson is 45 minutes. During the school year, children are given time to rest. Autumn and spring holidays last a week, winter 10 days, and summer about 2.5 months. Academic year ends in mid June.

To assess knowledge, a five-point grading system is provided. It has been used since grade 4. Until that time, students do not receive grades in the usual sense. It is believed that such a system does not cause psychological trauma, since babies avoid comparison with each other. Parents receive written progress reports. At the end of secondary institutions, all students undergo certification. Graduates pass compulsory subjects and exams that are required for admission to the chosen educational institution. The list of subjects required for the certificate includes Hungarian, literature, history, mathematics, and a foreign language.

A student has the right to receive secondary specialized education after 8 years of primary school education.

A graduate can enroll in:

2. Technical College;
3. Gymnasium.

The school belongs to general educational institutions. Graduates officially receive a certificate confirming the presence of secondary education, and have the opportunity to continue their studies at the university.

The technical school is also a general educational institution, but after graduation it is impossible to enter the university.

Each gymnasium has its own training profile. The student can choose any, depending on their preferences. Graduates pass the same compulsory subjects as ordinary students.

Higher education system

Hungarians can enter universities without entrance exams. To do this, they must have sufficiently high marks for final tests. 3. Complex classes. Students are simultaneously taught languages ​​and subjects that will be required for successful enrollment in a university.

Students must attend classes included in the educational program. It is possible to choose additional items on your own.
