  • Impossibility of repair. Damage to the surface of the skin is almost impossible to repair, it will need to be completely replaced.
  • Low strength. The material is easy to cut. Upholstery requires careful handling.

Upholstery material and tools

To work, you need to purchase right amount material and some simple tool if it is not available.

At self-fulfillment finishing work requires the following tool:

  • a hammer;
  • several screwdrivers;
  • construction scissors and a knife;
  • tape measure or ruler;
  • glue brush;
  • furniture stapler and staples 0.7-1 cm.

Materials:

For the first time, it is better to use plastic batting, as it provides an even distribution of the material over the entire surface. If you have upholstery experience, then you can use any material. However, in the process of work, it is necessary to constantly monitor the uniformity of distribution, excluding the formation of lumps and irregularities.

  • polymer glue (Moment station wagon);
  • decorative nails with a large hat;
  • decorative braid for decorating and fixing the upholstery.

There is no significant difference between domestic and foreign material, except for its cost. When buying by footage, allowance should be taken into account: 15 cm for a wooden canvas and 12 cm for a metal one. The thickness of the seal should not exceed 2 cm.

Braid and nails should be matched to the door fittings and not violate the overall style. Fasteners can be bought by weight or packed in 100 pieces.

Today, hardware stores sell ready-made kits for upholstery with leather doors. A complete set will eliminate the likelihood of visiting a hardware store in the midst of construction work.

upholstery technology

There are several ways to upholstery doors with leather. The chosen option depends on the skills of the master, the desired effect and the material used.

Finishing can occur on the outer or inner side of the door, as well as on both sides at the same time.

Preparatory work

Door preparation takes place in several stages:

  • Remove from hinges, lay on a pair of stands that can be built from chairs or a table. The door should lie flat up on the side that will be finished.

Some masters manage to upholster the door on weight. With little experience in such work, it is better to put the door in a horizontal position.

  • Remove the old coating, decorative elements and accessories. Do not worry about the resulting irregularities - a layer of insulation will hide the flaws and visually level the surface. On the wooden surface it is better to apply a layer of antiseptic.
  • Cut out a leatherette blank, the length and width of which should be with an allowance for each side of more than 10 cm.

Creating rollers

On doors it is required to provide leather rollers that provide good insulation. Before proceeding with their manufacture, you should consider the direction of the door:

  • when opening from the outside, 4 rollers are required on each side;
  • with the inside - three is enough (the side facing the loops is not upholstered with a roller).

For an inward-opening wooden door, the fourth bead can be cut to a smaller width and nailed to the door frame rather than the leaf.

To make a roller yourself, you need to cut a strip of material 10-15 centimeters wide. It is also necessary to cut a piece of lining material.

One edge of the strip is fixed face down on the edge of the door. One long roller is made from the lining and covered with the second edge of the leather strip. Work begins from the upper right corner, continuing on the sides and ending at the bottom. The lower roller should not touch the floor, as abrasion will occur. It is necessary to fix the rollers with staples using a stapler. They are driven in every 20 centimeters around the entire perimeter of the door leaf. It is acceptable to use nails.

For a metal door, glue is used, which coats the surface and evenly distributes the material, slightly pressing. The average consumption of glue is 100 ml per side of the door. Before applying the adhesive, the surface must be degreased. Next, glue is applied to the ends of the doors and the skin is pressed. Excess material is cut off with a knife.

door cover

Stretching steps:

  1. Door insulation. A blank of paralon or batting is laid on the canvas, and covered with leather at the top. The largest allowance should be on the side of the loops.
  2. Tuck the edges of the leatherette, hiding the edges of the insulation inside.
  3. Fixing the canvas with nails. Start hammering decorative carnations should be from the side of the castle. They are evenly distributed over the entire area so that the seal does not slide down, forming an ugly fold at the bottom of the door. The number of nails depends on the aesthetic criteria and the type of filler. Not sheet material should be hit more often.

During upholstery for decoration, you can use fishing line or thin wire, which is pulled between the nails.

To make the close-fitting on a metal door look neat, the edges of the material are tucked and fixed with staples from the inside. Glue is applied to the lining material, folded and pressed upholstery. All work should be done slowly, gradually moving in one direction.

With a wooden door, everything is easier. The edges are folded and nailed with decorative nails in 15 cm increments.

During the fastening of the sheathing, it should be controlled that the fasteners of the rollers do not look out from under the edges of the material. A few millimeters recede from the edge of the door so that the skin does not interfere with the movement of the door in the opening.

Hardware installation

Installation of fittings takes place at the final stage of tightening. In all places of technological holes it is necessary to make small incisions on the skin and lining material. To determine the location of the cuts, it is enough to feel the old holes through the upholstery. The peephole, lock and door handle are installed in the right places.

With the help of decorative nails, you can easily make the desired pattern on the surface of the door. After all work, the door can be reinstalled on the hinges.

For better insulation, you can purchase rubber compressor and glue the perimeter of the box with it.

"Lazy" trim

This method of sheathing is not much different from the classic one. Its only advantage is that finishing can be done without dismantling the door from the hinges. The method is suitable for doors with a large mass.

Operating procedure:

  • Cut a canvas from a roll of leather according to the size of the door with an allowance of 15 centimeters and 4 strips on each side 14 cm wide.
  • A similar canvas and strips are cut out of the insulation.
  • Remove the door handle, lock and peephole.
  • Fix the insulating rollers: nail one side to the edge of the door leaf, lay the insulation and wrap the other side of the strip.
  • Lay the insulation, keeping an even distribution. Fasten with staples at a distance of 5-7 cm from the edge of the door leaf.
  • Apply leatherette on top with a minimum allowance of 5 cm. Temporarily fix on the surface of the door.
  • Start upholstery from the side of the castle, carefully tucking the edges and fixing with decorative nails. Pass along the entire diameter of the door. When nailing, the material is constantly stretched so that the surface is even.
  • To door slope fasten the fourth roller from the side with a loop.
  • Screw on the previously removed fittings.

Features of metal door trim

Metal doors can be upholstered in two ways. The first is democratic and consists in gluing the material to the canvas. Another option is more expensive, based on the use of special panels. It allows you to get a more beautiful appearance, insulation and will last much longer.

Budget way

It was previously mentioned that the fastening of the material to the metal surface occurs with the help of glue. For greater clarity, let's take a closer look at the order of operations:

  1. Glue is applied to the edges of the door and foam rubber is fixed to it. All excess material, peeking edges are cut off with scissors or a knife.
  2. Apply glue to the top edge of the door. During operation, the formation of folds and distortions is monitored. They can only be fixed while the glue is still wet.
  3. After fixing the skin with a clerical knife, excess material is removed.
  4. Installing locks and handles.

Using Panels

For outer upholstery, MDF linings are used, which are made different sizes. At the end, the door will look no worse than its factory counterparts.

The inner side is upholstered wall panels, which allows you to choose the material for any interior of an apartment or house. MDF can imitate the texture of expensive wood. The only drawback is that it requires careful operation. Plastic panels simpler and cheaper, but more practical.

Stages of work:

  1. Measure the door. Corners on the inside to increase rigidity will help you measure the depth correctly. The inner height is equal to the distance between the lower and top corners and. Width - the distance between the side corners. All dimensions are required to correctly quantify timber and foam sheeting.
  2. AT hardware store you need to purchase panels, foam, wooden beam, decorative corner with a margin of 15%.
  3. Saw the bar into 4 parts, the width of which should be equal to the width of the door leaf. They take a bar, apply it to the door and mark the line along which the cut will be made with a pencil. Similarly, they produce with the lower part and in the middle. All 4 bars should be located at the same distance.
  4. With an electric drill, make 16 holes for fasteners in the door: 4 holes for each bar. The diameter of the drill must match the size of the self-tapping screw.
  5. Fasten the bars, forming a frame for attaching the panels.
  6. Make holes for attaching decorative panels. Their number is indicated by the manufacturer in the instructions.
  7. In the pan, make holes for the lock, handle and peephole.
  8. Fix panels.

Upholstery inside:

  • Fasten the frame bars as described for outer side.
  • Cut the foam into pieces so that they lie in the space between the bars. Make holes in it for fittings.
  • Lay foam or other insulation, you can fix it with glue.

  • Attach panels. For plastic, a stapler is used, and for MDF, with kleimers.
  • Fasten a decorative corner around the perimeter of the door to hide the edges of the upholstery and give it a more attractive look.
  • Install the lock, peephole and doorknob.

Technology for decorating door structures

Upholstering doors with dermantin is very simple, so if desired, each of us can cope with this task without resorting to the services of professionals. Do-it-yourself upholstery is performed in several stages:

The first stage: preparation of tools. In the course of work, you will need staples equipped with 10 mm legs, a stapler, a knife, a screwdriver, scissors, a glue brush, a hammer.

The second stage: preparation of materials. To finish the door with dermantine with your own hands, you will need lining material, upholstery nails certain color, glue (if upholstery of metal door panels is supposed) and directly dermantin itself.

The third stage: dismantling of locks. On the interior doors very often silent locks are installed. They are much more difficult to remove than regular ones. It is very important to follow the instructions attached to the mechanism during dismantling.

Otherwise, the lock after the subsequent installation will not work properly or will completely fail. To facilitate the task, experts recommend first removing the door from the hinges.

First of all, the locks are dismantled, then old cladding and peephole. During work, safety rules must be observed.

Fourth stage: do-it-yourself upholstery on the inside of the doors. A roller will help to upholster the canvas beautifully with the selected material. It minimizes gaps between the door frame and the door itself. Using a stapler, it is necessary to nail the leatherette to the canvas with the front side.

It is important to observe the three-dimensional entry. If the door structure is equipped with overhead locks, the roller is nailed starting from them, if mortise, the roller is nailed below the middle of the side.

The lining material must be cut into strips, carefully laid and fixed with a stapler on the canvas so that the roller sticks out a few centimeters, based on the location of the door and trim. After the roller is fixed, you can begin to finish the surface with dermantine.

The upper edge of the material is tucked in, laid in a corner door structure and nailed with a decorative nail. All other edges of the material are nailed in the same way. It is necessary not to forget to pull the dermantin in the process of work.

Fifth stage: material finishing of the outer side of the door leaf. Outer side upholstered a little differently. A projection is drawn on the canvas with a pencil door frame. It allows you to get the exact contour of the skin.

First, the lining material is fixed with a stapler with an indent of 1 cm, then the main piece of dermantin is nailed with a decorative nail and an insulating roller is made, which is pre-fixed to the door frame.

It is undesirable to nail the lower roller to the threshold. Over time, constant grazing will lead to scuffs. Lastly, the lower edge of the skin is nailed, and all accessories are mounted.

A step-by-step plan for metal door trim

With the help of a brush, the perimeter of the door leaf is smeared with glue, the lining material is evenly glued to its surface, then from the side of the hinges, dermantin is fixed on top of the lining material with glue.

The choice of a door is a responsible matter, because it must protect the room from outsiders, have good soundproofing characteristics and not let in heat. It is these indicators that a wooden or metal door, sheathed and insulated with special materials, has.

The cost of a sheathed product is an order of magnitude higher than the cost of a conventional door leaf, so not everyone can afford it. In order to save money, you can sheathe the door yourself, since this method is quite simple and inexpensive. As an incentive prize, you will receive a reliable insulated door that does not let in excess noise.

Leatherette is most often used as a sheathing material due to its unpretentiousness.

Sheathing leatherette

The choice of leatherette is a simple matter, because there is a significant difference between domestic and foreign manufacturers no, except in their cost. When buying, you only have to decide between already ready-made kits, including fasteners and foam rubber, and independent choice all the necessary details. When buying leatherette by the footage, please note that for a wooden door it is necessary to take a segment 15 cm wider than the door leaf, and for a metal one - 12 cm.

As a heater, it is recommended to use foam rubber, the thickness of which should not exceed 1-2 cm. You can also try to insulate the door with isotone, which has slightly higher performance than foam rubber can boast, but its cost is not low.

Note! As fasteners, special nails with a wide head are used.

The color of the head is selected to match the material chosen for the sheathing. For attaching leatherette to metal doors, Moment glue is used.

Kit necessary tools includes:

  • brush;
  • scissors;
  • construction stapler;
  • pliers;
  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver.

Wooden doors

Upholstery of doors takes little time, so there should be no problems, especially if you strictly follow the action plan below.

  1. We remove the door from the hinges, after which we unwind the fittings. The canvas, freed from unnecessary details, is laid on a flat surface.
  2. We remove the remnants of the old upholstery, if any.
  3. To wooden canvas with the help of a stapler, the lining material is attached, although ordinary nails can also be used for fixation.
  4. It is necessary to cut off the leatherette taking into account the release of 15 cm in width.
  5. Turn the top edge over and fasten, evenly distributing the material. Now we are doing the same with leatherette on the sides, but at the same time on both sides, in order to gradually stretch the free material.
  6. The lining insulation must be laid so that it protrudes slightly on the spare edge, which will make it possible to make a small roller when bending the sheathing material. The resulting roller should protrude 5 cm beyond the doors. We fix it all with the selected fasteners.
  7. We make the same roller on the sides of the door leaf. In this case, it is necessary to monitor its thickness, which should be the same along the entire length of the upholstery.
  8. When fixing the skin, make sure that there are no wrinkles that occur when the tension is insufficient.

Now you can start decorating the appearance of the skin. Using the selected braid and nails, we form a specific pattern that you choose yourself. Most often it is a rhombus or a square. The decorative braid is stretched from one corner to another and fixed crosswise with nails on the sheathing material.

If leatherette for one reason or another moves away from the door, then it can be fixed with a horizontally stretched band. Fasteners are recommended to be placed at a distance of 10 cm.

Note! The lower roller should be at a distance of 15-20 mm from the floor.

At the final stage, it remains only to arrange all the accessories in their places. The upholstery of the doors is over - admire the result.

metal

Sheathing material is attached to metal sheet with glue. Consider the order of this operation.

  1. Glue is applied along the edges of the door leaf, after which foam rubber is attached to it. Peeping edges of the material are carefully trimmed with scissors.
  2. Next, glue is applied to the end of the door at the top. It is recommended to carefully monitor the emerging folds and distortions and correct them during them so that the result satisfies you.
  3. After the glue dries, use a clerical knife to remove excess material.
  4. Fasten the handles and locks in place.

With these two methods, you can update the appearance of any door and improve its performance, while the cost will be minimal. By using ready-made sheathing kits, you will save valuable time, although they are a little more expensive. From pieces of material, you can make an interesting miniature and fix it on the door.

– Round insulation. It can be foam rubber or foamed polyethylene, with a diameter of 10 ... 20 mm. Its length should be equal to two perimeters of the door plus 1 meter.

- Wallpaper nails. The heads of such nails should be decorative, have metal surface or upholstered in leatherette, in harmony with the main material and color door handle or castle. Using decorative nails and wire or fishing line, you can give the doors a three-dimensional pattern. The number of nails depends on the pattern chosen. – Cutting of the main fabric and insulation is carried out. The dimensions of the leatherette cloth should be 20 ... 30 cm more sizes doors. The insulation sheet should be 1 cm smaller than the door itself.

- Insulation rollers are made from strips of upholstery material, and strips of insulation, and preferably from foam rubber strips or foamed polyethylene. Insulation rollers will give the door additional sound and heat insulation and ensure tightness between the door frame and the door. They are nailed so that they protrude 1 ... 2 cm out of the door.

- Stapler fastened strips of leatherette (width 10 ... 14 cm, length, equal to the length doors) face down. A 4 cm strip is left on the door, the rest remains outside the door leaf.

- In the fixed strips, strips of insulation (foam rubber or foamed polyethylene) are wrapped, forming rollers, which are fixed with a stapler on the door leaf so that they protrude beyond the edges by 1 ... 2 cm.

– The rollers are fixed, starting from the upper right corner, then they are fixed on the vertical side of the door and ends with fixing at the bottom of the door. The lower roller must not touch the floor, as this will cause it to wear out quickly.

– When fastening the rollers, the location of the lock must be taken into account and door hinges. The roller, located on the side of the hinges, must completely cover the doorway. And at the place where the lock is attached, a gap should be provided.

- Fastening on the door leaf of the insulation is also done with brackets, retreating from the edge by 5 ... 7 cm. Holes for the handle, lock and peephole are cut out in the insulation.

- It is fixed on top of the insulation upholstery. It must be wrapped around the edges of the insulation and secured with brackets at the upper corners. If you want to give the upholstery a pattern, then you need to mark it. If there is no pattern, then decorative nails are hammered in in increments of 6 ... 8 cm. When nailing the leatherette, it must be constantly tightened so that it is perfectly even at the end of the work.

Upholstery on the outside of a wooden door

If the door of the apartment opens inward, then the upholstery of the outer side of the door is performed in this sequence.

1. Close the door and mark the rectangle of the door frame on the door leaf - this will be the border of the upholstery.

2. Fix the insulation, retreating inward from the drawn line by 10 mm.

3. Fasten the upholstery material on top of the insulation, bending the edges inward, as when upholstering the inside of the door. The bottom edge is not fixed yet.

4. From the outer side of the door, install the heat-insulating rollers on the racks and the crossbar of the door jamb, and not on the door leaf. At the bottom, the roller is not nailed to the threshold, because it will wear out very quickly. The leatherette strip is attached with the front side to door frame stapler, a strip of insulation is laid in it, a roller is formed and fixed with decorative nails. The roller should cover the door by 1.5 ... 2 cm after it is closed.

5. The lower insulation roller is attached to the door leaf, not the threshold. It shouldn't be too bulky. After its formation, it is also necessary to upholster it with a leather substitute.

6. A peephole, handles and a lock are installed. Holes (cuts) for accessories must be made smaller than the dimensions of the handle (lock or eye).
