The topic of lack of space in small apartments is always relevant. Lifting furniture allows you to expand the area of the room during active times of the day, which greatly facilitates the stay of people in cramped conditions. I was interested in learning how to make a wardrobe bed. After looking through a lot of information on this topic on the Internet, I decided to assemble a transformer bed wardrobe with my own hands. Studied the basic principles of built-in furniture. Made drawings and diagrams of the bed closet. Made lists the necessary tool and materials.
Installation of a lifting wardrobe-bed
The project for the design of a wardrobe-bed, assembled with your own hands, consists of two boxes, one of which is built into the other. Two lifting mechanisms located below on the sides of the furniture body provide movement sleeping place from horizontal to vertical position and vice versa.
The lifting mechanism is quite complex technical device. I considered it risky to try to make such a mechanism on my own without special factory equipment. Therefore, I used purchased factory-made devices.
Tool
Since the work of assembling the folding structure of bedroom furniture involves lumber, the appropriate tool was needed:
- jigsaw;
- perforator;
- saw;
- screwdriver;
- confirmat drill with a crank;
- hammer;
- roulette;
- pencil;
- screwdrivers;
- set of nut heads
Materials
Based on the drawings of the wardrobe-bed with dimensions, I ordered cutting of MDF sheets from a furniture workshop. I also ordered the finishing of the ends of all parts of the built-in bed assembly. The bottom of the sleeping bed is also the front wall of the closet. I also ordered its production from a furniture shop.

Step-by-step instructions on how to make a wardrobe bed with your own hands
After I brought home the materials and prepared the tools, I began to assemble the transformer bed cabinet with my own hands according to the drawings. The work was carried out in stages.
- On the wall I made markings with a pencil for the fastenings of the vertical furniture frame.
- At two points I made holes in the concrete wallø 10 mm depth 120 mm.
- Through the holes in the corners, I hammered 2 frame dowels into the wall.
- The vertical body box was assembled from the panels listed in the “Materials” chapter. I drilled holes in the ends and mating planes of the parts for installing confirmations.
- Having screwed in the confirmations, I installed the body in a vertical position.
- I secured the mounting angles screwed to the wall with screws.
- I assembled the bed frame, connecting the panels with confirmations.
Cost of materials
At the end of the work, I calculated the costs I incurred for making furniture.
The cost of making panels for assembling a built-in bed in a closet with your own hands. The area of MDF with a thickness of 25 mm was 11.55 m2:
- side panels 45 x 220 cm – 2 pcs;
- top vertical and horizontal panels 450 x 1740 mm – 3 pcs.;
- bottom wall 50 x 174 cm – 1 pc.;
- supporting horizontal panel 45 x 180 cm – 1 pc.;
- side walls 43 x 218 cm;
- cross walls 430 x 1760 mm;
- bottom-facade 1760 x 2180 mm;
The total cutting length of MDF sheets is 20 linear meters. End finishing – 34 l.m.
The furniture workshop issued an invoice for payment for materials, for the work of cutting and trimming panels:
11.55 m 2 x 400 rub. = 4620 rub.;
20 p.m. x 30 rub. = 600 rub.;
34 p.m. x 5 rub. = 170 rub.
Total: 5390 rub.
The cost of other materials was:
- lifting mechanism with a swivel leg - 2 sets with fasteners = 3000 rubles;
- metal corners 50 x 50 – 26 pcs. = 52 rub.;
- frame dowel 10 x 122 mm – 2 pcs. = 16 rub.;
- confirmations 50 mm - 16 pcs. = 20 rub.;
- screws 30 mm - 40 pcs. = 5 rub.
The total cost of materials was: 8483 rubles.
Labor costs
The assembly of the transformer bed cabinet was completed in 2 days.

The highest quality construction will be made from chipboard panels, so we recommend using them as the main material. So, you have prudently purchased necessary materials, tools, prepared a drawing, decided on the dimensions of the future piece of furniture. When everything you need has already been prepared, we begin to make furniture with our own hands. We divided the assembly process into 4 steps.
- Step one. It is necessary to assemble the frame closet and, hiding a compact sleeping place. Such a box consists of several parts: plinth, back wall closet and, as well as shelves for support. All parts are attached to each other with self-tapping screws or self-tapping screws located approximately 25 centimeters from each other. Assembled closet should only be installed on a flat floor.

- Step two. Install assembled structure, which will serve as a reliable support for the folding part of the furniture and attach it to the wall.

- Step three. Now let's assemble the base. It is a frame made of boards, the height of which corresponds to the dimensions of the future mattress. In this case, the base should ideally fit the frame we have already assembled closet A.

- Step four. Now that all the main parts of the structure have been assembled, we connect the base to the box, fixing the parts together using self-tapping screws. Then we fasten reclining oh mechanism in accordance with the attached instructions.

It is better not to experiment at this stage and purchase a factory-assembled folding mechanism.
Thus, it will be possible to avoid unnecessary difficulties at the final stage of work, significantly saving time. At the final stage, we simply connect the body with other elements, after which all that remains is to trim it with boards outer part box to make it look more like closet , and also paint the structure to your liking.
Once you have connected the folding mechanism to the mattress frame, you can safely use such a bed.
We install the facade in the form of improvised cabinet doors. Using the handles, the bed will be moved to a horizontal position.

The price for high-quality German and Italian lifting mechanisms is quite high, but the safety is worth it.

From the Author: I have long thought about building a so-called wardrobe bed. During the day it looks like an ordinary wardrobe, at night it is a full-fledged sleeping bed. The prospect of savings contributed to the implementation of the idea square meters in its two-room apartment, and my hands were itching for a long time after office work with a drill and screwdriver. Physical work was preceded by mental work: sketches and drawings were drawn, dimensions were checked. It can be attached to the frame on one of the short sides. In this case, the furniture when folded will look like a cabinet. If the base of the structure is connected by a long end, then the product in this state can be used as a cabinet. However, no matter what type of wardrobe-bed it has, the main thing is that it is firmly fixed to the wall and does not “slide” to a horizontal position.
About the drawing
As we can see, the wardrobe-bed (a photo of the diagram of this furniture can be seen below) has a very primitive design. However, if you decide to make this product yourself, you should not abandon the drawing. Draw a diagram of the location of all the workers and mechanisms, calculate the distances, all dimensions and make the calculation. This way, you will not only reduce the risks of creating a crooked design (as happens when creating a product according to a drawing “from your head”), but also significantly reduce the cost of materials, since you will already know exact quantity metal corners and wood boards. The frame is the base of the entire bed, which must withstand enormous loads and not bend when mechanical damage. In our case, it will consist of 3 sides of the same height and sides that hold the boards and mattress. One of the sides will be equipped with a lifting mechanism; accordingly, it should be as strong and reliable as possible. Its height may be equal to all other sides, or it may be slightly lower - there is no difference. Which one to choose is made with your own hands, it can be supplied with both a gas lift and furniture hinges. The latter option can be considered if the budget for the manufacture of this design is very limited.
But before you make a wardrobe bed with your own hands, remember that all the parts that will form the frame must be connected into a complete structure with wooden pins. They should be coated first special glue. You also need to drill holes for them before installation. The pins should not be round, but rectangular shape, that is, each angle in them has a slope of 90 degrees. Of course, glue alone cannot guarantee reliable connection all parts, so when it dries, screw a few additional screws into the structure. This way you can finally secure all sides of the bed.

After screwing in the screws, you need to install special mattress stops on the wardrobe bed yourself. The boards are installed at an equal distance from each other. The optimal distance is 50 centimeters.

You can also use special steel fastenings, which are attached to the sides of the device and then mounted to the wall.
Installation of the lifting mechanism
As we noted above, this furniture is equipped with either gas elevators or furniture hinges. In the first case, you will need to buy 2 elevators and for each of them make a corresponding base on one side of the frame.
In the case of hinges, you will also need 2 of these devices. Please note - the wardrobe-bed with a gas-lift type lifting mechanism is designed in such a way that it takes on most of the load and weight of the tool. Therefore, you can lift even a one-and-a-half-size sofa with just one hand.
Facades
After this, it is necessary to purchase and install planks into the facades, which are attached to the long side of the device frame. Partially, these parts can serve as a side. They are mounted to the base using special hinges, which are usually included in the kit of these products.
If used as planks and other wooden parts If you used products from fresh wood (natural pine, for example), then it is best to treat it with additional varnish.

Many people make a bed for a transformer based on factory-type frames with orthopedic properties. For this, manufacturers use metal profiles, curved canvas slats and an orthopedic mattress.
What kind of bed for a transformer can you make?
- The frame of a bed or sleeping place is constructed from boards, wooden blocks, based on prepared drawings. The skeleton will determine the size of the future bed, its dimensions. Please note that it must fit inside the cabinet, otherwise it will no longer be a transformer.
- Buy a ready-made orthopedic mattress. Moreover, first a mattress is purchased, and on its basis, calculations are made of the dimensions of the future bed-wardrobe. Nothing else. Otherwise, you may simply not guess, then everything will have to be redone.
- Instead of curved slats, boards fixed flat along the width of the bed with a gap of about 1 centimeter between them are suitable. Or you can install several boards on the edges and fix them on top chipboard sheet or plywood of sufficient thickness. Both design options will result in approximately the same weight and strength level.
- The wall can act as a headboard, that is, you will sleep with your head as if inside a closet. If the bed is installed horizontally, then you can come up with something individually for yourself, so that you have something to rest the back of your head on.
A finished bed will cost at least 20 thousand rubles, and the price of a homemade bed can be about 5 thousand. The choice is yours.
Closet
In addition to the fact that the closet will hide a bed, it can be used for its intended purpose. This especially applies to horizontally positioned beds, where upper part The cabinet will be completely free to accommodate shelves, hangers, and drawers.
If you prefer a vertical arrangement, where the bed is stacked up, then the transformer closet can be made into two sections or more, where:
- The first will be completely dedicated to the bed;
- The second will be able to play the role of a closet itself, justifying its name - a closet-bed.
All that remains is to assemble all the components together and your transformer is ready. There is nothing particularly difficult about making it. But the result exceeds the expectations of many. The main task is to correctly calculate the dimensions so that the drawing fully matches real possibilities and dimensions of the transformer elements. And the rest is a matter of technology.
