Remove yellow stains from water on the ceiling. How to remove stains on the ceiling. Copper sulfate in the fight against rust - how it works

It’s hard to argue with the fact that yellow spots and stains on the ceiling or walls will please few people. They are destroyers beautiful interior living space. It is especially unpleasant, to put it mildly, if you have recently made repairs yourself.

Therefore, a painful question arises: how to remove water or rust stains on the ceiling and walls with your own hands.

Let me make a reservation right away that it is necessary to begin removal work by determining the causes and conditions for the appearance of contamination. There may be several of them.

Causes of water and rust stains

  • Leaking unsafe roof. Show her off thorough examination, and if there are leaks, repair the roof.
  • Raw and wet room. Excessive dampness and moisture in the room is fertile ground for the appearance of rust spots and stains, as well as on the ceiling and walls. Get rid of damp moisture in the room.
  • Presence of microcracks in the ceiling and walls. Promotes the spread of dampness and excess condensation in the room. Carry out a thorough inspection and repair microcracks.
  • Leaking water supply and sewerage pipes. Carry out a thorough inspection and eliminate the causes of leaks.
  • Water leakage from neighbors as a result of broken pipes, flooding, sewerage problems, and so on.

Stain removal tool

  • Metal spatula (width 100 mm);
  • Sponge or piece of foam rubber;
  • Plastic basin;
  • Brush (width 30mm);
  • Paint roller and tray;
  • Paint can.

  • Remove wallpaper or wash off whitewash from a contaminated surface, and clean the putty down to the plaster or drywall.
  • If the surface is painted, soak the stain with a damp sponge and remove the paint and putty with a spatula.
  • Pour white into a plastic bowl and soak a sponge or piece of foam rubber in it.
  • Treat the entire cleaned surface by squeezing out the sponge and pressing it firmly against the stain for a while. If the stain is larger than a sponge, then perform the treatment in several passes, soaking area by area. In this way, wet the entire stain. Continue the procedure until the yellow spot lightens.
  • Wait for the treated surface to dry completely. If after drying the stain is not completely lightened, repeat the operation again. Instead of whiteness, you can use others described below.
  • Prime the treated area using a roller and brush and let it dry for 24 hours.
  • Paint the primed surface with oil paint in several layers and let it dry.
  • Prime the entire surface with acrylic primer and let it dry for 24 hours.
  • Cover the surface with a layer of acrylic putty and dry for at least a day.
  • Clean the putty with fine sandpaper(180-200), especially carefully go through the transition points from new to old surface and prime the surface again.
  • After complete drying, paint the repaired area with the same paint that was used to paint the ceiling or walls.
  • Repaint the entire ceiling or wall again with your base paint.
  • If you decide to apply another decorative coating or paste wallpaper, then the two previous points do not need to be done.

  • clean the contaminated surface with a spatula,
  • prime it with a deep penetration primer,

Most exquisite interior loses premises appearance when yellow spots appear on the light background of the ceiling. Usually their appearance is associated with water leakage through the ceiling as a result of some kind of accident. IN apartment buildings sometimes neighbors drown, and in private roof covering Over time, it loses its tightness. Since most people are interested not in the causes, but in eliminating the consequences, it is worth considering in detail how to get rid of yellow spots on the ceiling of a room.

Where to start?

Advice one: don’t rush to conclusions, be patient and follow this algorithm:

  1. Make sure that the cause of the stain is eliminated and water leaks through the ceiling do not continue.
  2. Study the nature of yellow spots and choose a solution. Don't rush to paint them over right away.
  3. Perform deletion and, if necessary - finishing work.

If the place where it appears yellow spot, continues to dampen, then the flow of moisture has clearly not stopped. This does not have to be flooding; water dripping onto the ceiling is enough to cause a visual defect to appear. Such leaks are often observed in the corners of the bathroom and toilet, where water coming from neighbors has already “made its way” through. The same thing happens with a leaky roof of a building; moisture can seep inside in small portions in inconspicuous places.

It’s not so bad when the stain is dry and has yellowish edges. Perhaps he can be defeated easily folk remedies. It is more difficult if rust appears on the ceiling, you will have to work hard so that yellow stains do not appear after some time. There are also grease stains, but they have nothing to do with leaks.

FOR REFERENCE: THE RUST COME FROM THE REINFORCED FRAME OF THE FLOOR PLATE IN CONTACT WITH MOISTURE AND AIR

Methods for eliminating the defect

Dry stains with yellow edges can be removed by using a caustic bleach called Bleach. Wearing rubber gloves and soaking a piece of foam rubber with “White”, you need to carefully blot the unsightly stains on the ceiling. Then let the surface dry and positive result repeat the operation 2-3 times, sometimes it helps a lot and the stains disappear.

Surface cleaning

In the case of rust or mildew, bleach will not help. The issue will have to be resolved radically, including repainting the entire surface. Applying paint in one place is advisable for recently completed repairs, otherwise the difference between the new and old coating will become noticeable. The procedure is as follows:

  • cover the furniture and household appliances plastic film;
  • Use a spatula to clear the area where the stain appeared, removing the layer of paint and putty down to the slab;
  • treat rusty stains on the stove with a solution of copper sulfate or citric acid and wait until the iron oxide dissolves (the stains will change color);
  • Rinse off the acid with water and dry the treated area well.

TIP: WHEN PERFORMING WORK IN THE AREA OF A CHANDELIER OR OTHER PLACES WHERE ELECTRICAL WIRING IS LOCATED, TURN OFF THE ELECTRICITY IN THE HOUSE

Ceiling putty

After drying, it is necessary to apply antifungal primer Ceresit CT99 or similar with a brush, followed by deep penetration primer (Ceresit CT17). Between applications, you must maintain the time interval indicated on the packaging. And the last step is to carry out finishing work by applying a layer of putty and new paint. Before painting, the hardened putty is leveled with sandpaper.

By painting the area of the ceiling where there was a yellow spot, you risk getting a new defect and here's why. There may be a conflict between the new and old paint, as a result of which the coating may swell and peel at the contact boundary. Hence the recommendation: clean off the old paintwork over the entire area and re-paint the ceiling with a roller. Another option is to cover the surface with wallpaper or polymer tiles.

Other types of ceilings

The previous section describes the removal of stains caused by flooding or leakage through a standard concrete floor, covered with putty and paint. But now in apartments the ceilings are decorated with other materials:

  • suspended plasterboard systems;
  • suspended ceilings;
  • plastic panels.

Ordinary drywall does not tolerate contact with moisture at all and must be replaced after it gets wet. The moisture-resistant version of the material is also not designed for water to pour onto it. The worst thing is that leakage of accumulated water occurs at the joint, which is why 2 adjacent sheets have to be replaced. But don’t rush, it’s better to first cut out the material that has become unusable. Check if it is possible to insert a small piece of drywall in its place, screwing it to the jumpers between the profiles of the suspension system.

IMPORTANT: IT IS ALSO NECESSARY TO DRY AND TREAT THE CONCRETE BASE UNDER THE COVERING, OTHERWISE A FUNGUS WILL APPEAR IN THE PLACE OF THE STAINS

Removing rust stains from plastic can also be difficult, but replacing 1 or more panels is not difficult. The main thing is to match them to the color of the old ones, for which the panels must be thoroughly washed. There will be no stains from leaks on stretch ceilings, but after the bubble is eliminated, the material may become deformed and not return to its original state. Here you cannot do without the help of specialists; they will correct the tension covering or replace it entirely.

How to make repairs after a flood?

Question. Our upstairs neighbors flooded us. They poured it specifically. Leaks throughout the apartment, dark spots from water on the ceiling and walls in the kitchen, bathroom, hallway and one of the rooms. The wallpaper has peeled off. Tell me how to make repairs in this case. From past experience, we know that it is very difficult to paint over leaks; stains and smudges appear through the paint; this is especially noticeable on the ceiling. The wallpaper on the walls also darkens with streaks where water has flowed. Can you recommend anything?

Answer. Really dark stains of drips are quite difficult to paint over or cover with wallpaper. They tend to bleed through. But there are reliable technologies.

Firstly, wait until the walls, ceiling and ceiling are completely dry. This will take at least six months. There is no point in doing repairs before.

Secondly, remove old wallpaper, peeling paint. If, after pouring, the plaster begins to lag behind or simply becomes loose, then it must also be removed. If the entire wall has become brittle, then it must be impregnated with deep penetration acrylic bonding primer. The resulting depressions and irregularities need to be leveled. I do this with VGT putty. This putty applies and sands well. If the potholes are deep, then you need to apply the putty in several stages. After the first application the putty will crack. This is fine. Cracks need to be filled. Sand the resulting surface. Correct minor defects with a thin layer of the same putty.

Thirdly, after the putty has completely dried, you need to apply a waterproof paint layer so that no stains appear. The fact is that water-based paints are all porous, they breathe and allow water to pass through. Wallpaper also allows water to pass through. Dirt goes along with the water. It is dirt and foreign impurities that appear in spots. The easiest way to create a waterproof layer is this way. Apply universal alkyd or glypthal primer. I use Otex primer (Tikkurila) or white primer GF-021. Then you need to apply PF-115 enamel, then another layer of primer. This enamel is completely waterproof. This provides protection against stain bleed through. Water-based paint or wallpaper paste will not stick over enamel, so a second layer of primer is needed. In fact, GF-021 is also waterproof, so if you use this primer, then just two layers of primer are enough; you don’t have to apply enamel, but you can apply it to be safe. If Otex is used, then enamel must be applied.

You can apply enamel over the first layer of primer after 4 - 6 hours. The second coat of enamel primer can also be applied after 4 - 6 hours. Dry thoroughly last layer soil (preferably 24 hours). Application of water-based paints or wallpaper glue over insufficiently dried alkyd or glypthal primer leads to curling of the paint or glue (characteristic lumps are formed).

All! You can paint the ceiling or walls, glue wallpaper. The stains will not appear after such repairs.

What to do in a situation when a neighbor floods your apartment and there are smudges on the ceiling? See how to get rid of this problem and remove stains from the ceiling.

Most often, smudges are formed as a result of flooding and appear on ceilings and walls. When the area through which the water seeped dries out, red streaks form around it, causing the paint or plaster to peel off.

You should remove stains only when you are sure that water will no longer appear in these places. The cause of the flooding has been eliminated. Otherwise, the efforts will be in vain, because the ceiling repair will have to be repeated.

If, after the stains have dried, it turns out that the only visible sign of flooding is dirt on the wall or ceiling, and the plaster and paint adhere well, you only need to paint. On the second day after painting the stains, paint the ceiling or wall using emulsion - acrylic or latex paint.

You will need:

  • flat brush;
  • roller;
  • spatula;
  • bucket;
  • drill with paint stirrer;
  • a board with sandpaper;
  • primer; putty gypsum;
  • stain neutralizing paint, dispersion or latex.

Surface cleaning

Using a spatula, we clean the flooded area, remove easily peelable fragments, dirt, paint or plaster. To remove remaining dust and paint, wipe the surface with a dry brush.

Surface primer

We cover the ceiling fragment to be repaired with an antibacterial primer. The primer will reduce the absorbency of the substrate. We interrupt our work for 24 hours.

Preparation of putty mass

We collect a portion in a bucket clean water and add putty plaster. Mix until you get a homogeneous mass with a viscosity reminiscent of processed cheese.

Puttying holes in the wall

We put the prepared mass on a spatula and fill in the holes that appeared after cleaning the base.

Sanding the base

On the second day, when the plaster has dried, start sanding the putty areas. Thanks to this, the ceiling will have a smooth surface.

Stains on the ceiling appear quite often in our apartment or house. This unpleasant moment worries many people. Especially if after a recent renovation on your snow-white ceilings they appear from nowhere. Unfortunately, not everyone knows how to deal with this phenomenon, and this article is designed to help you get rid of stains on the ceiling.

First, we should tell you about where the spots come from, because there can be several types of them. This will help you better understand how to clean yellow stains from the ceiling and how to prevent their reappearance in the future.

Types of stains

Oil stains

In most cases, they appear from the use of oil paints. Until recently, it was considered very beautiful to paint the ceiling with such paints; they created a durable and easy-to-clean surface. The problem of our time is the fact that oil paints They saturate the surface very deeply, and even after completely washing off the ceiling, the oil appears on the surface over time. It is quite difficult to remove such a stain on the ceiling.

Moisture stains

  • I think it would be redundant here long description their appearance, because many people have encountered them. Some people's roofs leaked, others were flooded by their upstairs neighbors, which leads to a large yellow spot remaining on the ceiling after it dries. This type of stain is much easier to deal with than greasy stains from oil paints.

Rust stains

  • For new houses and apartments, such stains are quite rare. They are formed due to corrosion of reinforcement and pipes in the ceilings, when rust passes through the concrete to the surface of the ceiling. Normal painting water-based paint won't help. If you have such stains, do not waste energy and money on multiple layers of paint, because to completely get rid of them, the surface must be properly prepared.

Fungal spots

  • The most unpleasant of all. They not only spoil the appearance of your ceiling, but are also very harmful to health and can cause allergies. Fighting them is difficult and rarely works out. simple repair surface on which the fungus has formed. But even with it you can fight, because modern market provided quite wide range means to remove it.

Removing stains

Due to the fact that stains on the ceiling can be of different origins, it is logical to assume that the methods for eliminating them are also different. What to do with stains and how to eliminate these “blots” that spoil the appearance of our ceiling.

Oil stains

Oil stains, as mentioned earlier, are quite difficult to get rid of.

In this regard, they are usually not deleted, but simply “blocked”.

Advice: Oily stains on suspended ceiling washed off with soft fabric lint-free or sponge using detergent for dishes.

Moisture stains

Very often we encounter such spots yellow color apartment residents. As you might have guessed, this refers to cases where upstairs neighbors forget to turn off the tap in the bathroom. Also, in old apartments, the water supply and sewerage systems leave much to be desired and leaks occur quite often.

Residents of private houses are not without this problem, since rainwater or melting snow pass through old roof. Subsequently, stains form, which, even after repeated puttying and painting, still appear on the surface.

How to remove stains from a ceiling:

Rust stains

The appearance of this type of stain is associated with corrosion of fittings and old pipes inside the ceilings. In most cases, they “come out” to the ceiling simultaneously with flooding, because moisture is needed for rust to appear on metal.

How to remove stains on the ceiling:

  • Treatment with copper sulfate.
    This method has many supporters and is used quite often. At the same time, there are probably more opponents of this method; they claim that after such treatment, the stains return over time.
  • "Toilet duckling"
    Human ingenuity has no limits. To combat stains, some people have tried using a “toilet duck” with a rust remover function. They claim that this method is very effective and leaves no streaks.
