Canon cameras review. Canon camera range

Have you been wanting to buy a DSLR camera for a long time, but don’t know which one to choose? Now is the time of New Year's sales and discounts - it's time to fulfill your old dream. And so that the choice would not be so long and painful, I decided to prepare for you a review of the most popular Canon SLR cameras.

Why Canon?

I have been using this company's products for many years and remain loyal to them. High quality and level of service make it the most popular among photographers. In many cities there are representative offices and service centers of Canon, where you can get quality service. You can also, in case of a malfunction, send the camera for repair by mail. Several photographers I know from other cities where there are no service centers, sent cameras to replace shutters after several hundred thousand frames were taken at weddings. But this is so, preface.

Factors influencing the choice of camera

Before you go to the store and start making your choice, it is advisable to decide why you need this SLR camera? What genre of photography do you prefer? How important is it to you technical quality the resulting images? Are you going to shoot in extreme conditions? Finally, do you plan to take up photography professionally and make money from it or will it be your favorite hobby?

Your choice will largely depend on the answers to these questions. For example, if you like to travel and plan to shoot in various, often unfavorable conditions, then you should choose a camera with dust and moisture protection, otherwise it will not last long.

Professional photography involves turning to the top price segment, which is occupied by the flagships of the company’s model line.

If you just like to take photographs, but the quality of compacts and ultrasonics has not satisfied you for a long time, and you are not ready to spend a large amount on upgrading your equipment, then pay attention to the models entry level.

You always need to remember that the camera itself, in the jargon of photographers the “carcass”, is a consumable item, unlike, say, lenses. The same as, for example, memory cards that have a limited resource of use. The age of a camera is determined by the number of guaranteed shutter releases. For entry-level and professional level this indicator may differ by 2-4 times.

Now let's get down to reviewing the main models of Canon SLR cameras. I won't point it out special attention on technical characteristics oh and their boring description - all this information can be easily found on the official website. We will touch on them only briefly, focusing on the above-mentioned aspects of choosing a camera.

Canon EOS 1100D camera

This is the simplest and cheapest DSLR model offered by Canon. Refers to the entry level. As we agreed, I will try not to overuse technical characteristics, but I will still give some.

  • Sensor size in MP: 12.2 (4272 x 2848 pixels)
  • Physical sensor size: 22.2 x 14.7 mm (crop factor 1.6)
  • Burst speed: 3fps
  • Video recording capability: yes
  • ISO sensitivity: 100 - 6400
  • Dimensions: 130 x 100 x 78 mm
  • Weight: 495 g
  • Case material: plastic

This model is suitable for beginner photographers with a limited budget. Despite its simplicity and low price(not the most expensive advanced point-and-shoot camera costs the same), the camera provides high image quality that is incomparable to that provided by even the most expensive compact cameras.

The dimensions and weight of the camera are much smaller than those of advanced and professional cameras, which is important if you often carry the camera with you or take it on tourist trips.

The camera does not have dust and moisture protection; the body is made of impact-resistant plastic. It has a fairly simple menu and a smaller set of functions compared to more expensive models. However, for an amateur photographer, most of these functions are not needed, and a complex menu will only be a disadvantage.

The camera does not have automatic focus in video mode.

For commercial photography and professional work This camera is certainly not suitable.

Canon EOS 650D camera

The newest model of amateur DSLR from Canon at the time of writing. Positioned as a model also intended for beginning photographers. The three-digit models (550D, 600D, 650D) have more features than the entry-level models.

  • Burst speed: 5 fps
  • Video recording capability: yes, autofocus, stereo sound
  • ISO sensitivity: 100 - 12800 (extended to 25600)
  • Dimensions: 133.1 x 99.8 x 78.8 mm
  • Weight: 575 g
  • Case material: stainless steel, plastic with fiberglass.

This model is also perfect for beginner photographers. But understanding its advanced functions will be more difficult, so be prepared to read the instructions for a long time and master it in practice. One of the 650D's signature features is its rotatable touchscreen, making it easy to control the camera and shoot in difficult conditions. On the one hand, this is good, on the other hand, it’s additional weak point.

The camera has a new Digic 5 processor, which makes it possible to increase performance, burst shooting speed, and also use hybrid autofocus in video shooting mode! This is the first Canon camera to offer continuous autofocus in video mode. The autofocus system has 9 cross-type points.

The camera can remotely control Canon system flashes. This makes it possible to organize a mini-studio, say, on the road or even at home.

If photography is more than just a hobby and a desire for you to take high-quality photographs, if you want to study the process more deeply, try new techniques and techniques, then this camera is for you.

The camera body is made of a stainless steel chassis, which gives it additional strength (and, accordingly, affects the weight). The camera does not have dust and moisture protection.

Canon EOS 60D camera

A model positioned by Canon as an amateur camera. Models with a two-digit designation generally have a longer shutter life than models in a lower price category.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP: 18 (5184 x 3456 pixels)
  • Physical sensor size: 22.3 x 14.9 mm (crop factor 1.6)
  • Continuous shooting speed: 5.3 fps
  • Video recording capability: yes
  • Dimensions: 144.5 x 105.8 x 78.6 mm
  • Weight: 755 g
  • Housing material: aluminum alloy, plastic with fiberglass.

The model has more complex controls and a developed menu with a large number user settings. Accordingly, an experienced user can configure the camera settings to suit his needs.

The camera also has a rotating display, the advantages and disadvantages of which are discussed above. The autofocus system has nine focusing points, and, unlike previous Canon models with a two-digit number, all points are cross-type, that is, sensitive to vertical and horizontal lines. This greatly improves focusing and makes it faster and more accurate.

The camera can control external system flashes using the built-in flash, just like the 600D and 650D models.

In order to master all the intricacies and capabilities of this camera, it will take quite a bit of time. If you have already used simple DSLRs, but want something more impressive, more reliable and modern, this model will be an excellent choice.

A more capacious battery and reduced power consumption allows you to take up to 1000 shots before being completely depleted.

There are even more metal parts in the body chassis, which affects strength and reliability. To keep the weight of the camera within reasonable limits, most parts are made of aluminum alloy. The camera does not have dust and moisture protection.

Canon EOS 7D camera

The flagship of the Canon camera line with an APS-C sensor size. Models with one number in the name make up a line of advanced amateur and professional cameras. The company positions the 7D as a reportage camera.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP: 18 (5184 x 3456 pixels)
  • Physical sensor size: 22.3 x 14.9 mm (crop factor 1.6)
  • Burst speed: 8fps
  • Autofocus: 19 cross-type points
  • Video recording capability: yes
  • ISO sensitivity: 100 - 6400 (extended to 12800)
  • Dimensions: 148.2 x 110.7 x 73.5 mm
  • Weight: 820 g

The camera was specially designed for use in difficult shooting conditions, so its body is made of particularly durable magnesium alloy and has dust and moisture protection. A little rain or damp weather will not harm the camera (but this does not mean that you should constantly shoot in the rain or submerge the camera in water). Sand and dust won't get in either, as long as you don't change the lens or memory card.

The camera's operation is controlled by as many as two Digic 4 processors, resulting in high focusing speed, excellent autofocus tracking performance and a very high continuous shooting speed of 8 frames per second, which is ideal when shooting dynamic scenes.

The "Seven" has an improved shutter design with mirror damping, resulting in a quieter operation sound, as well as a service life of 150,000 operations.

The focusing system has 19 cross-type points, the viewfinder provides 100% image coverage. The camera can control system flashes using the built-in flash.

The camera menu is very developed and has significantly more user settings.

This is a great camera for professionals or advanced photography enthusiasts.

Canon EOS 6D camera

This is the bottom model in the line of advanced amateur and professional cameras with a full-frame sensor. It uses the latest technological achievements of the company.

Main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP: 20.2 (5472x3648 pixels)
  • Continuous shooting speed: 4.5 fps
  • Autofocus: 9 high-sensitivity points, cross-type central sensor.
  • Video recording capability: yes
  • ISO sensitivity: 100 - 25600 (extended to 104200)
  • Dimensions: 144.5 x 110.5 x 71.2 mm
  • Weight: 755 g
  • Case material: magnesium alloy, no dust and moisture protection

The advantages of full-frame cameras can only be appreciated by experienced amateurs or true professionals. The large matrix allows you to fully unleash the potential of high-quality optics, both system and third-party ones. The image quality obtained from a full-frame matrix is significantly higher than from an APS-C format matrix.

The camera has received many of the most modern innovations. I will not go into detail, I will limit myself to just listing. This is multiple exposure and the ability to average the image (multi-frame noise reduction), when several frames are taken, and the camera automatically averages random noise fluctuations, creating a noise-free image at the output while maintaining high detail.

Now you can compose HDR images directly in the camera in automatic mode. Moreover, for bracketing you can set not 3 frames, but also 2, 5 or 7 frames. The camera is controlled by the new Digic 5+ processor.

Two more interesting innovations - a built-in GPS module that allows you to record geographical coordinates into image metadata, as well as a built-in Wi-Fi module that allows you to do without additional devices and send images directly to your computer. This is just a godsend for those who shoot while viewing the image on a monitor! Now you can do without wires.

The Canon EOS 6D camera is perfect for those who have long been thinking about switching to full frame and have saved enough money for this. Cameras with a full matrix are much more expensive than their “cropped” counterparts.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera

One of the most anticipated cameras of 2012 was the third reincarnation of the mega-popular “five” from Canon. At one time, the Canon EOS 5D camera was a great success, becoming the first full-frame digital camera. Its glory was eclipsed by the legendary 5D Mark II, which is still very popular.

But the new “mark” is something completely different... It is quite difficult to compare it with the second modification. This can be immediately seen from the main technical characteristics:

  • Sensor size in MP: 22.3 (5760 x 3840 pixels)
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm
  • Burst speed: 6 fps
  • Autofocus: 61 points / 41 points cross type, 5 points dual cross type
  • ISO sensitivity: 50 - 25600 (extended to 102400)
  • Dimensions: 152 x 116.4 x 76.4 mm
  • Weight: 950 g
  • Case material: magnesium alloy, dust and moisture protection

The first thing that arouses admiration is new system autofocus with 61 points and large frame coverage. 41 cross-type dots (the number of cross-type dots depends on the lens), 5 double cross-type dots, sensitive to diagonal lines. All this ensures the fastest and most accurate focusing. Autofocus settings have become so extensive that the developers have placed them in a separate large menu block.

The camera has a lot of user settings; it will be very difficult for an inexperienced user to understand the menu. And this is justified, since the camera is intended for professional photographers.

The new sensor has a lower noise level, which made it possible to obtain a fully operational ISO 6400. The declared guaranteed shutter life is 150,000 operations.

To increase reliability, the camera has two slots for memory cards: CF and SD. In this case, various combinations of card operation are possible - sequential, when images are recorded on the second card after the first one is full, parallel, when the captured image is recorded on both cards, providing backup.

The camera provides the ability to obtain ready-made HDR images with various presets, multiple exposures and multi-frame noise reduction.

The camera body is made of high-strength magnesium alloy and has dust and moisture protection.

Canon EOS 1D X camera

Units are traditionally the flagships and pride of the company. In these cameras the company shows its latest achievements and developments. True, the price of these cameras is very high, so they are only available to professionals in the top segment.

  • Main technical characteristics:
  • Sensor size in MP: 18.1 (5184 x 3456)
  • Physical matrix size: 36 x 24 mm
  • Continuous shooting speed: 14 fps
  • Autofocus: 61 points / 41 points cross-type, 5 points double cross-type, a separate processor is responsible for focusing
  • Video recording capability: yes, manual settings possible
  • ISO sensitivity: 100 - 51200 (extended to 204800)
  • Dimensions: 158 x 163.6 x 82.7 mm
  • Weight: n/a
  • Case material: magnesium alloy, dust and moisture protection

The camera body is made of highly durable magnesium alloy and has dust and moisture protection.

The specially designed sensor has extremely low noise levels, allowing the ISO range to be expanded to an incredible 204800. The focusing system is the same as the 5D Mark III, but the significant difference is that the process is handled by a separate processor. The new shutter made it possible to increase the continuous shooting speed to 14 frames per second.

A separate 100,000-pixel sensor and processor are also responsible for automatic exposure determination.

The camera has a built-in Ethernet port for quickly transferring images to a computer or directly via the Internet directly from the scene.

I hope that this brief overview will allow you to right choice. I did not indicate the cost, since it depends on the dollar exchange rate and the store’s markup.

Pay special attention to the availability official guarantee Canon for Russia! Otherwise, you will be denied warranty service.

I foresee questions about reviews of cameras from other companies. Since I work specifically with Canon photographic equipment, I have a very rough idea of the features of cameras from other companies. That is why I decided to focus my attention on Canon cameras.

In the article “Which SLR camera is better to buy?” you can find out why I recommend buying a Canon DSLR rather than a Nikon, for example. Now we will select the camera model. Although this article relates to choosing a SLR camera, some information can also be used when purchasing Canon point-and-shoot cameras.

Determine your budget

How much can you spend on a purchase? The answer to this question will eliminate at least half of the camera models. Minimum set What you need to buy is the camera itself (Body) and the lens. You can immediately buy a camera kit with a lens (Kit), which will cost you a little less than buying the components separately, but you have to think about whether the lens that comes in the kit will satisfy you? If the answer is no, then it is better to buy the camera and lens separately.

Sometimes the purchase price needs to include additional accessories: a memory card, a case, a tripod, a protective lens filter, a spare battery, a flash. My guess is that most photographers won't need this (except for a memory card, which doesn't come with a DSLR). But if you are focused on the future and know exactly what types of shooting you will be doing in the future, then it would be strange to postpone them due to the lack of, for example, a tripod (landscape photography) or a flash (indoor reportage photography). If you have decided on your budget, then you can already know what class of camera is available to you.

Camera classes

Once upon a time everything was simple: Canon clearly divided cameras into the following classes: amateur, semi-professional and professional. It was easy to distinguish them: the fewer numbers in the name of the camera, the higher its class. For example, Canon EOS 100D, 600D, 650D, 700D belongs to the class cameras for amateur photographers. The EOS 1100D has a class lower than “amateur” (how much lower?), but let’s add it to the above camera models.

Semi-professional cameras: EOS 60D and... (here the logic of Canon’s classification collapsed recent years): 7D and 6D.

Professional Canon SLR cameras: EOS 5D Mark II (discontinued, but you can buy used), 5D Mark III, 1D-X, 1D-C.

So, your budget determines the class of the camera, and then we will choose a camera within the class.

Which amateur camera should I buy?

The first thing I recommend paying attention to is the processor number. Why? The newer the processor, the lower the noise level when high values ISO, which means you can get better (in terms of noise level, sharpness) pictures in low light conditions. Today, new Canon cameras use a DIGIC 5 processor, so I would not recommend buying cameras with a DIGIC 4 processor (these are the EOS 1100D and 600D). How sweet, we only have three models left.

The EOS 100D has a weak point - the lack of cross-type AF points, meaning this model will focus less confidently in low light conditions than its EOS 650D and 700D brothers.

Both models have a rotating screen (which is essential for some creative shooting) and the only significant difference I saw was that the EOS 700D can track moving objects in video mode. Will you be making a video?

It is likely that having identified the leader (EOS 700D) in the class of Canon amateur cameras, we will come to the most expensive model in this class (average price 27,000 rubles). The closest possible model, EOS 650D, costs less – 20,000 rubles. The EOS 100D is relatively expensive at 25,000 rubles, but it is Canon's most compact and lightest DSLR camera. A dubious advantage. If compactness is important, then it is better to look towards good point-and-shoot cameras.

But don’t rush to buy “top” amateur cameras, because for the same money you can buy a higher, semi-professional class from Canon. Yes, the camera will be heavier and larger, and the processor will be DIGIC 4, but you will get much better autofocus. If you are aiming for professional photography, I recommend purchasing at least a semi-professional camera.

Semi-professional Canon cameras

Everything is simple here. Canon EOS 6D has a full-format sensor, which means that this camera will be able to fully reveal best properties expensive Canon L-series lenses. In addition, this is the only semi-professional model today that has a DIGIC 5 processor in this class of cameras. And it costs, on average, 57,000 rubles. An excellent choice if you have this amount and another 30,000 - 60,000 rubles for lenses.

The EOS 7d (costs 39,000) also has a feature: Canon intended it to be an inexpensive reporter camera with a professional-grade autofocus system. According to reviews from my friends who purchased this camera specifically because of its advanced autofocus, it did not live up to their hopes.

But the EOS 60D for 25,000 rubles is a good choice for an amateur photographer and a novice professional who is not yet ready to buy a camera for a lot of money.

Since the publication of the article, it has appeared best solution in the middle price range: Canon 70D. The fact that it has a next generation processor (Digic 5+) is already enough to prefer this model. Well, and a bunch of smaller “goodies” like: Wi-Fi, a rotating touch screen, 19-point “cross” autofocus.

Professional Canon cameras

Cameras of this class are even easier to choose. They all have a full-format sensor and a DIGIC 5 processor. However, cameras in this class have a certain specialization. 5D Mark III for 92,000 rubles is the choice of a wealthy amateur photographer, a perfectionist or a professional photographer who does not shoot “extreme” reporting (sports, wild animals). I will not consider high-end report cameras (EOS 1D-X costs 215,000 rubles, and EOS 1D-C - 420,000 rubles), because they are the lot of the coolest reporters, for whom this article is of no use.

Which lens should I buy?

Let me return to the topic of buying lenses for Canon cameras. First: I do not recommend that novice photographers buy lenses from third-party manufacturers (Tamron, Sigma, etc.). Second: I do not recommend purchasing a Kit (a “camera with lens” kit) if it contains a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens (from 3,000 rubles). You can understand very quickly that 55mm. This is not enough and the image of this lens is rather weak. A universal and inexpensive lens for a “cropped” matrix (and therefore for all cameras except EOS 6D and professional ones) is the EF-S 17-85 mm. (12,500 rubles) or EF-S 15-85 mm. (21,000 rubles). The latter will give more freedom when shooting in cramped conditions (I’m greatly simplifying the advantage of a wide-angle lens, because there are other features). But, with a lack of finances, the EF-S 17-85 lens will give a quite decent image and show its versatility as “the only lens for all occasions.” Both lenses will allow you to do commercial photography.

If your budget does not allow you to buy an EF-S 17-85 lens, then there is nothing to do, you will have to shoot with an EF-S 18-55 mm lens. A used vehicle in excellent condition could previously be bought for 1,500 rubles, and sometimes for nothing. Although this is a rather weak lens, at its price it honestly earns every ruble.

PS: on the website www.canon.ru you can get detailed information for all modern Canon cameras. Thank you for your attention.

Two Japanese technology giants, Canon and Nikon, have been competing in the photographic equipment market for many years now and are fighting for the favor of sophisticated consumers.

Canon is a kind of monopolist in its field. This company does almost everything office equipment plus high-quality modern cameras.

Nikon focused exclusively on developing photographic equipment. But such different strategies of these companies do not spoil the quality of either the first or the second.

Nowadays, almost every family has a camera, regardless of whether it is needed for work or leisure. But who, in the end, should you give preference to? What to choose for a beginning photographer? Which is better Canon or Nikon? What camera would be better suited to create a family photo archive? Let's try to figure it out.

Comparison of advantages

Canon

  1. Let's start with the most important thing - the price of cameras.

Over the entire period of existence of these two companies on the photographic equipment market, lenses and cameras from Canon have always been a little cheaper than that of a competitor.

For example, Nikon lenses with similar characteristics have always been and remain about 10% more expensive than Canon. At the same time, the quality is the same. We can assume that this is simply a certain pricing policy of both companies, which has been established for years.

  1. There is also a difference between Canon and Nikon - all new products released by the company appear in stores almost instantly. As soon as manufacturers announce the release of a new camera or lens, you can safely count on the fact that within a month you will become the proud owner of this new product. With Nikon everything is a little more complicated, because everything latest developments appear on shelves within a few months. But if we are talking about a camera of an expensive price line, then you will have to wait about six months.
  2. Another definite plus of Canon cameras is video quality. No matter how hard Nikon tries, it still cannot catch up with its competitor on this point. True, the newest Nikon models improve their performance on this point, but the frame rate, which is very important when shooting video, remains higher in Canon cameras.
  3. If it's important to you number of megapixels, then you need Canon. According to this indicator, it ranks first.

Nikon

Now we can discuss the advantages of Nikon photographic equipment:

  1. The first and undeniable plus is Possibility to take photographs in dimly lit rooms and still get good quality photos. If there is not enough light, then with no Canon camera you will get such a high-quality shot as with Nikon. It is with it that you get an excellent picture with very little noise.
  2. Nikon's APS-C sensor is larger in size than Canon.
  3. Nikon cameras receive the next prize in the category autofocus. And in this section it is possible to find even two advantages.
  • The first thing is that Nikon, in principle, focuses better than Canon. With the latter, sometimes you have to switch to manual focus - and for this you need to have experienced eyes and not shaking hands.
  • The second advantage in this point is the autofocus points, or rather the predominant number of them in Nikon. This plus also cannot be ignored, since sometimes Canon’s rather limited number of autofocus points limit your actions, and focusing on the intended subject becomes a problem.

Lotions

Various adapters, which, for example, will allow you to install an old Soviet lens on a modern camera, are much easier to find from Canon and they cost an order of magnitude cheaper than Nikon.

But the latter company is very attentive to a variety of additional options with which it stuffs its cameras. Most often, all these, at first glance, insignificant details, can greatly simplify the photographer’s work.

Flashes

In terms of quality and control, both Nikon and Canon are the same.

In order to compare Nikon and Canon cameras, and compare corresponding models from different companies, you must first go through the main points.

Matrix and resolution

These parameters are decisive for a high-quality image. The matrix affects the quality of color rendering, the amount of noise, and sharpness.

All matrices, without exception, on Canon cameras are made using the new CMOS technology. Competitors still have some cameras with a CCD matrix, which even in terms of power consumption is very inferior to the young progressive development of CMOS.

Canon wins overall megapixel race: on average, when comparing identical models, Nikon has 0.3 fewer pixels - for some this may be decisive. Although the manufacturer compensates for the lack of pixels additional function noise reduction.

For good quality photography you need not only a good matrix, but also resolution. High resolution will allow you to take large format photos without losing detail.

Optics

Optics, or in simpler words, the lens, is also an important point when choosing a camera. Most often, the body camera itself is sold along with a standard lens that comes with the camera itself. But you can purchase everything separately and choose a lens specifically for your needs.

To compare Canon and Nikon lenses, it is worth remembering that Canon optics are only suitable for cameras of this brand, and the same rule applies accordingly for Nikon. But there are many old lenses like “Helios” or “Jupiter” that give an interesting picture and can diversify your photo leisure time.

Such lenses, with the help of an adapter, can be used on devices from both companies, but it is worth noting that Canon provides wide range adapters and it’s easier to buy them than the corresponding adapter for Nikon.

As for “native” lenses, there is no limit to the variety of both manufacturers. From portrait optics (without zoom), that is, lenses with a constant fixed focal length to the so-called telephoto lenses.

Although Canon is slightly ahead of its competitor in this variety, while showing a more flexible pricing policy. A lens with the same characteristics will cost on average $50 cheaper from Canon.

Electronics

Electronics are almost the same from both manufacturers, supports all possible formats. Both Nikon and Canon spare no expense on quality electronics.

Many agree that Nikon is equipped with autofocus and exposure metering that is somewhat better than Canon's. It’s worth noting: Nikon’s current generation did not have photographic equipment with really bad automatic focus. Even with the D40 or D60, which had only three focusing points, auto-sharpness did not become a weak link in this case. Canon, on the other hand, had models where automatic focus adjustment was an important claim. As an example -350D, the first few 5D lines, where the focus indicator absolutely did not correspond to the class and price of the camera.

Admittedly, Canon will do strong autofocus if required. Reportage cameras like 7D and 1D are equipped with systems that are not inferior to Nikon analogues in the D300 and D4, but Canon cameras, which are not declared as professional by the company itself, are even more disadvantaged. Depending on the price and quality of the Nikon camera, the level of autofocus control is reduced (than less price, the worse the quality), but there is not much difference between expensive and low-cost models.

But also to objectively identify the best and worst system Electronics in these cameras is impossible; both manufacturers use electronics with their own pros and cons.

Exposure Modes

Nikon's camera measures exposure better and better, while achieving maximum naturalness of the image. Canon, of course, has convenient exposure meters, but they are suitable for some specific situations ( dark background, presence of backlight, etc.)

Flash

Almost all cameras from both companies have a built-in flash, which allows you to take good pictures in the evening. Although Nikon is confidently in the lead on this point- everything related to night photography or shooting in a poorly lit room where a flash is needed - Nikon will be indispensable here.

In addition, the level of noise reduction will be very important - and Nikon also does a better job with this function. Another plus is that Nikon’s built-in flash can be controlled manually.

Ability to change settings manually

Both Nikon and Canon provide the ability to change all settings manually, as well as adjust white balance.

Ergonomics

Here you should only take into account your personal preferences. Externally, Canon and Nikon cameras are almost identical– they diverge only to the control system. As for weight, almost all Canon models are lighter by an average of 300 grams, as they are made of plastic.

Don’t think that it will fall apart after a few days - the plastic is of high quality and can safely withstand shocks and impacts. Although Nikon is still made of more reliable material - almost all models are positioned as waterproof.

Comparison of models

For comparison, let's take the Canon 60D and Nikon D7000 cameras. Both cameras are from the inexpensive line of manufacturers and their price is approximately the same - about $1000.

Canon EOS 60D

  1. 18-pixel matrix, ISO can reach 6400;
  2. The camera allows you to shoot Full HD video;
  3. A big plus is the large rotating screen, as well as the built-in pop-up flash;
  4. The battery lasts quite a long time and allows you to take about 1000 photos at a time;
  5. The body is made of plastic (like most Canon brand models);
  6. For its price, the camera takes pretty high-quality pictures and videos.

Nikon D7000

  1. The matrix resolution is 16.2 pixels, ISO is exactly the same as that of the competitor;
  2. It is possible to shoot HD video;
  3. The body is made of magnesium alloy;
  4. Battery characteristics are the same as those of Canon - allows you to take about 1000 pictures;
  5. Large convenient display (3 inches);
  6. Very good autofocus system.

For comparison: Nikon has a slightly larger sensor, but Canon's sensor has a higher resolution. The Nikon D700 has 39 focus points, the Canon 60D has 9. The latter camera is positioned as suitable for absolutely all weather conditions (rain, snow, heat), and the instructions also indicate that the camera is waterproof.

The maximum shooting time for one video for Canon is half an hour, for Nikon it is 20 minutes. When shooting video, the frame rate is also higher with Canon.

Canon is a little larger in size, but the Nikon camera is heavier.

If the previous two cameras are amateur class, then the following cameras represent the elite and pride of the two companies.

So, the main advantages of the Nikon D800:

The modern world has given amateur and professional photographers a whole Klondike of different cameras, which has intensified the “war” between Canon and Nikon. To finally answer this question of a universal scale, you can go to the LiveJournal blog of Anton Martynov (an honored master of his craft), where his answer is substantiated by graphs and calculations:

The Japanese company Canon is today one of the industry leaders in the production of photographic equipment, and its SLR cameras are extremely popular among various categories of users due to their high quality, good service and constant improvement of the model range.

It is this company that owns the famous line of EOS (Electronic Optical System) cameras, which represents models of SLR autofocus cameras. It dates back to the late 80s of the twentieth century, when the first camera in this series was released - the Canon EOS 650. Since then, many generations of EOS DSLRs have changed, but we will dwell in more detail on several models.

Canon is a world leader in the photo and video equipment market. The company's almost century-long history often becomes a decisive factor when choosing a camera. The Canon logo is found on budget compact digital cameras and professional DSLRs. But it is important to take into account that the company started producing point-and-shoot cameras relatively recently, and therefore does not have the same advantages over competitors as in the production of SLR cameras. Canon is taking its first steps in the use of mirrorless technologies, but it is still far from being the market leaders.

The company's strong point is SLR cameras. Fans of the brand note the intuitive menu and pleasant color rendering in warm colors. It is said that the photography world is divided into “canonists” and “nikonists,” but this is due more to force of habit than to significant differences. Any brand may hide more or less successful models. To avoid making the wrong choice, read reviews of the best cameras.

The best compact (digital) cameras from Canon

Compact cameras are the most inexpensive and mobile representatives of Canon photographic equipment. More compact and lighter than DSLR models, they are great for travel and memorable photos for the family photo album. The weight of most of them ranges from 400 to 600 grams. At the same time, the housing of digital devices is free of fragile protruding parts, which makes them easy to transport in a bag or suitcase.

Despite their miniature size and relatively low cost, these Canon developments are not inferior in image quality to some SLR cameras for beginners. After all, the best representatives of the category are equipped with a decent matrix with a sufficiently large number of photosensitive points to compare with more expensive devices.

3 Canon PowerShot SX620 HS

Bargain. A successful combination of light weight and operating time
Country:
Average price: RUB 12,989.
Rating (2018): 4.5

The most successful inexpensive model confidently entered the ranks of the best thanks to its practical weight of 182 grams, a thin 2.8-centimeter body and an excellent image stabilizer. With all this, the compact camera runs on battery power longer than its neighbors in the rating and other representatives of its class. On average, the battery lasts for 295 photos. Connoisseurs of low-light photography will definitely be pleased with the built-in Canon flash, which retracts into the body. The camera is also good for those who like to experiment with optical effects. The presence of a special thread on the lens allows you to install a variety of attachments and filters.

Its practicality has made this Canon one of the brand's most popular budget cameras. In addition to battery life and clear shots on the go, reviews note convenience, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support. The photo quality, of course, is inferior to professional models, but for its price it is the best.

2 Canon PowerShot SX540 HS

Best shooting speed. Winner of user favorites. Optical superzoom
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: RUB 19,890
Rating (2018): 4.6

Although compact cameras are traditionally considered to be underpowered and lacking in functionality, a relatively inexpensive model in the mid-price segment surprisingly combines these important features and more. Canon, which has a gorgeous 50x optical zoom that allows you to shoot from distances that would require binoculars, also boasts an excellent 21.1-megapixel sensor, which is slightly higher than some entry-level DSLRs. In addition, the device stands out from its analogues with its shooting speed in burst mode, which reaches almost 6 frames per second. The video recording function also has improved speed, thanks to which the camera shoots video at 60 frames per second.

All users rate the compact camera with the best scores and leave only positive reviews. In their opinion, this great choice for its price.

1 Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II Kit

Best quality among compact digital cameras
Country: Japan
Average price: 45,490 rub.
Rating (2018): 4.8

The camera has been at the top of the ratings since 2014. This is the choice of quality connoisseurs who are willing to pay for it and are looking for a compact digital camera. The main advantage is high-quality optics. A bright lens (aperture opens to F2) at close distances will allow you to shoot without flash when there is insufficient light.

Other technical parameters include 5x optical zoom, macro mode, impressive crop factor of 1.85 for a compact, Full HD video, Wi-Fi and a rotating touch display.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II could be called the perfect compact digital camera, but its design does not have a viewfinder. Enthusiasts can purchase it separately, but the purchase will increase the cost of the camera by one and a half times.

The best Canon DSLRs for hobbyists

Contrary to what many newbies think, DSLR cameras are far from all the same. Therefore, those who are just starting to master the art of photography are recommended to give preference to models for beginners. Unlike more sophisticated advanced and professional cameras, they are richer in ready-made modes and filters than in manual settings, which makes it much easier to create unique photographs with improved properties. This allows you to gradually learn the capabilities of photographic equipment, without getting confused by options that are not always necessary for a beginner, requiring experience and certain knowledge.

Despite the ease of use, Canon cameras for beginners offer many possibilities, supporting a number of interfaces and add-ons. The best of them, among other things, are characterized by the maximum resolution available to the camera.

3 Canon EOS 1300D Kit

Price - quality. Flash bracketing mode
Country:
Average price: RUB 24,840.
Rating (2018): 4.6

The bronze review went to one of the most inexpensive cameras, which, despite its affordability, received many advantages that make it the best solution for beginners among relatively budget devices. Decent color rendition combined with a resolution of 5184 by 3456 pixels ensures good image quality. This Canon model is also equipped with a good set of ISO modes that allow you to experiment with light, and even flash bracketing, which most competitors do not have. This automatic mode, which varies flash output with each subsequent frame, is used in continuous shooting to create a series of images, each with a unique light level.

Also, according to numerous reviews, the SLR camera is very easy to use, has an intuitive menu, holds a charge well and captures the smallest details. But stabilization did not become his strong point.

2 Canon EOS 750D Kit

Hybrid autofocus type. Longest flash range. Battery pack
Country: Japan (manufactured in Taiwan)
Average price: 46,620 rub.
Rating (2018): 4.7

One of the most expensive Canon developments for beginners is a worthy representative of the premium class. Featuring a very rare autofocus system known as a hybrid autofocus system, the DSLR combines the best features of the other two systems and supports a useful Live View mode. It allows the photographer to track the subject in real time, making it easier to choose angles and settings. At the same time, the pictures are quiet and quite clear even in low light conditions. Powerful flash with a flash range of up to 12 meters, suitable for close- and mid-range shooting. Another advantage of Canon was the ability to connect a battery pack to increase battery life.

Many users say the main feature of a camera for beginners is the high quality of photos. A rich package, including a set of lenses and a program for working with images in RAW format, will also delight the buyer.

1 Canon EOS 200D Kit

The best new product of 2018. Capacious battery and Time-lapse. The thinnest and most compact
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: RUB 36,570.
Rating (2018): 4.8

Canon, with the maximum number of sensor megapixels for this category, reaching 25.8, is ideal for both beginners and amateurs who continue to slowly master photography. Despite the excellent image quality and functionality, the new product of 2018 can be called inexpensive in comparison with its analogues. The camera is also equipped with a capacious battery designed for autonomous shooting of up to 650 photos, which makes it one of the most energy-efficient in the category. Time-lapse mode for shooting at long intervals to create time-lapse videos. At the same time, the camera is thin, and its weight does not exceed 456 grams. Therefore, it is convenient to take it to outdoor photo shoots.

Among other things, reviews often strengths They call the backlight a flash for focusing in poor lighting conditions, mobility, touch control. Overall performance and excellent build quality complete the image of the best model for beginners.

The best Canon DSLR cameras for advanced users

Models for advanced photographers are a reasonable choice for those for whom the functionality of a camera for beginners is already limited, but the experience and knowledge to work with full-fledged professional equipment is still lacking. Price can also be a significant factor in favor of this category, because semi-professional devices are several times cheaper and often have approximately the same properties. At the same time, Canon DSLRs successfully combine automatic modes for fans with manual settings, giving the owner a huge choice of filters, light levels and so on.

All this does not prevent advanced Canon cameras from being relatively compact and, in some cases, not even heavier than their digital counterparts. Therefore, they are perfect for on-site filming or a photo report on a trip.

3 Canon EOS 7D Mark II Body

Best reportage camera
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 98,890.
Rating (2018): 4.5

For reportage photography, the EOS 7D Mark II is the best option; it’s not without reason that the camera is compared to a machine gun. In the latest version, the rate of fire has been increased to a record 10 frames per second. And this is not just a marketing ploy: frames are processed instantly without a limit on the number of shots. At this speed, the shutter life increased to 200 thousand is relevant.

Autofocus matches the reportage model: 65 cross-type focusing points. The lever on the body for adjusting the focus will help you not to miss an important moment in a series of rapidly changing events. The accuracy and speed of autofocus is reflected in the quality of video shooting. The necessary connectors and settings are provided for recording scenes. The speed is 50/60 frames per second at Full HD resolution.

Improved protection from dust and moisture, a reliable metal body of the SLR camera will allow you to shoot in difficult conditions without the risk of damaging your equipment.

2 Canon EOS 70D Kit

Favorable price
Country: Japan
Average price: 69,100 rub.
Rating (2018): 4.7

A successful DSLR has been in the rankings of the best cameras for several years. Besides quality characteristics, the model features dust and moisture protection. High image quality, pleasant color rendition, working ISO up to 1600. The camera is famous for its shooting speed - 7 frames per second, and the electronics manage to process the material without stuttering.

In terms of the number of focusing points (19), autofocus is inferior to competitors, but this has almost no effect on convenience. The camera quickly picks up objects and brings them into sharp focus. Beginning photographers will appreciate the simple menu and touch monitor, while professionals will appreciate the ergonomics. Separately, we note the popular Wi-Fi, which provides communication with mobile devices.

1 Canon EOS 80D Body

Best value for money
Country: Japan
Average price: 72,920 rub.
Rating (2018): 4.8

The new Canon model is rapidly conquering the market. One thing separates it from professional full-frame technology: key difference– crop factor 1.6. Compared to the previous version, the SLR camera turned out to be even more advanced. The sensor size has increased from 20.9 to 24.2 megapixels, and 45 focusing points (instead of 19) provide precise focusing, even when objects are located at the edges of the frame. The phase detection autofocus system allows you to comfortably shoot photos and videos. By the way, the frame rate in Full HD in the EOS 80D is increased to 60 frames. The new product will help the photographer during reportage work: the shooting speed is 7 frames per second.

Among other innovations, we will add an electronic level, Wi-Fi and NFC modules. This is the best offer on the market of advanced SLR cameras in terms of price and quality ratio.

The best Canon DSLR cameras for professionals

It is impossible to call yourself a professional photographer without having the appropriate equipment. Therefore, despite the numerous advantages of relatively inexpensive cameras for beginners and advanced users, Canon DSLR models for professionals are the best solution for those who have decided to make photography their life’s work. After all, this category is characterized by the largest number of megapixels of the matrix, an abundance of manual adjustments and additional features, extended burst shooting, the highest quality sound when shooting video and other advantages.

Surprisingly, with such rich functionality, many professional cameras hold a charge longer than representatives of other categories. Moreover, they support most known formats.

3 Canon EOS 5DSR Body

The best DSLR camera for studio photography. Matrix 50.6 megapixels
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 195,990.
Rating (2018): 4.6

The SLR camera is aimed primarily at studio and advertising photographers and expands the possibilities of commercial photography. The camera occupies a leading position in the ratings thanks to an improved matrix with a resolution of 50.6 megapixels.

In addition to its high resolution, the Canon EOS 5DSR is famous for its speed, but is inferior to its closest competitors in terms of light sensitivity. But if you consider the use of pulsed light in the studio, the disadvantage will seem insignificant.

A feature of a full-frame camera is the ability to shoot with crop factors of 1.3 and 1.6. Another useful option is the horizon level in the viewfinder. The Canon EOS 5DSR will be the best for studio photographers, but the options for outdoor work are limited. According to photographers, the model is demanding in terms of optics; the potential of the “carcass” is revealed with new L-series lenses.

2 Canon EOS 6D Body

Best value for money
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 94,990.
Rating (2018): 4.7

An affordable full-frame DSLR is comparable to premium cameras, but at half the price. Proven electronics went on sale in 2012 and became a breakthrough of its time. In particular, the presence of timely installed Wi-Fi and GPS modules helps to take first places in the ratings.

When using top lenses, a DSLR camera will allow you to achieve excellent detail. Low noise levels and high operating ISOs allow you to shoot at dusk and in dimly lit rooms. The rate of fire is lower than that of competitors - 4.5 frames per second, but this is enough to solve most creative problems. The camera records decent video, and buyers have no complaints about the sound or picture detail.

The affordable cost of “full frame” was reflected in the ergonomics. Compared to older models, the button functionality is reduced and does not allow you to quickly adjust the set parameters. But these shortcomings cannot be called significant. If you don't have extra money, the Canon EOS 6D is the best choice.

1 Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Body

The most popular SLR camera
Country: Japan
Average price: RUB 223,090.
Rating (2018): 4.8

Sales of the full-frame EOS 5D Mark IV started in September 2016. It became a continuation of the legendary Canon line. The fourth generation 5D has become even more advanced. Compared to its predecessor, the model received an increased number of megapixels (31.7), Wi-Fi, GPS modules, the ability to record video in 4K format and a touch screen.

There are no fundamental differences in other parameters. In the right hands, using top-end optics, Canon can work wonders. Ringing sharpness, spectacular background blur, shooting in low light conditions. Even picky experts call ISO values up to 3200 workable.

Like its predecessor, the Mark IV has a metal body with dust and moisture protection. The equipment is not afraid of light shocks and vagaries of the weather, and metal prevents radio interference, reducing the amount of interference from mobile phones. The DSLR is praised for its lightning-fast focusing speed, with autofocus rarely fluttering even when shooting fast-moving scenes.

However, some critics considered the changes made to be insufficient and say that the Mark IV is losing ground in the ratings. The disadvantages include a small buffer size and a rather weak processor: the electronics do not have time to process video in 4K format. Despite this, sales of the legendary digital camera are growing.

The best Canon mirrorless cameras (with interchangeable lenses)

Mirrorless models are great for those who understand photographic equipment well enough to master the nuances of interchangeable lenses. However, professional knowledge is not required to master most cameras in this category. Models with interchangeable lenses are few in number and most are offered in the Kit version, which means that the device comes with at least one carefully selected lens, and sometimes a whole set.

The absence of a mirror gives cameras of this type some advantages over the mirror type when recording video. At the same time, they are much more compact and lighter. Therefore, this is a good intermediate option between a DSLR and a digital model.

3 Canon EOS M10 Kit

Lowest price. Lightweight and compact
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: RUB 22,890.
Rating (2018): 4.5

The top three best cameras with interchangeable lenses are opened by the most affordable and practical development of the Japanese company. Costing several times less than some of its competitors, this Canon is nevertheless not inferior to many of them in a number of features. Of course, in terms of the quality of the matrix, this mirrorless model is somewhat simpler than professional SLR cameras. However, the presence of a matrix cleaning function, a rotating touch screen and a resolution of 5184 by 3456 pixels make Canon, considering the cost, a rather tempting purchase. Moreover, this camera weighs less not only than DSLRs, but also digital devices. Weight 301 grams and a modest thickness of only 3.5 centimeters allow you to comfortably transport the compact device even in a small handbag.

The convenience of the camera in all respects is confirmed by numerous reviews. Users praise it for its quality, miniature size, functionality, modes and reliability.

2 Canon EOS M100 Kit

The largest maximum series of shots. Image quality. Fast autofocus
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: RUB 30,030.
Rating (2018): 4.6

This stylish new product for 2018 differs from its competitors not only in its original corrugated body and bright retractable flash, but also in the power of some functions. First of all, the camera will delight the owner with the best in category number of effective photosensitive elements of the matrix, which reaches 24.2 megapixels, as well as a resolution of 6000 by 4000 pixels. Therefore, there can be no doubt about the quality of the photographs and the possibility of enlarging them or printing them in a large format. Continuous shooting has also become a strong point of the camera. Speed more than 6 frames per second, as well as maximum quantity 21 images for the RAW format and 89 for the familiar JPEG format are useful for sports shooting.

In addition, according to numerous reviews, this Canon model has clear and very fast autofocus, good stabilization and photo quality. Also, many note pleasant ergonomics, intuitive menus, and autonomy.

1 Canon EOS M50 Kit

Best fast shooting speed. Microphone input. Flash shoe
Country: Japan (made in China)
Average price: 42,990 rub.
Rating (2018): 4.7

The leader of the best cameras with interchangeable lenses is a powerful device with additional features, found mainly only in not too cheap professional and semi-professional DSLRs. Unlike its competitors, this model does not lack the ability to connect additional flashes. A special device called a shoe allows you to connect and synchronize any external portable flash with the camera, thereby providing a good field of activity for those who like to experiment with light. The presence of a microphone input will significantly improve the sound of video materials. The Canon is also good at burst shooting, reaching speeds of up to 10 frames per second.

At the same time, in reviews, buyers note an abundance of settings that are suitable not only for beginners, but also for advanced users. In addition, the camera has an excellent electronic viewfinder and convenient button placement.
