Likes - does not like, or my approach to Echinacea. Cultivation of echinacea (photo) planting, varieties and care of Echinacea terry novelties

There are many varieties of echinacea, new ones appear every year. I have favorites. They conquered me with their spectacular color and abundance of flowering, stem strength and neat appearance after flowering, longevity in flower beds. But there are varieties with which I said goodbye.

Favorite Echinacea

The most reliable, in my opinion, is the species Echinacea purpurea (Echinacea purpurea). Every year, she regularly pleases with flowering, "architectural" appearance and expressiveness of a large flower with a convex middle. Due to the lignified base of the stems, it is not afraid of rain, winds and snow. Dry fruit cones will also decorate the winter flower garden and become a treat for sparrows and other small birds. Where I have mulched with pine bark, purple echinacea is sown not too abundantly, in open space - very, very much. But this is more of a joy than a problem.

Just as good and reliable white variety White Swan (White Swan).

There are echinaceas that once you see - you will keep in your memory all your life. They are so spectacular that they become an accent that attracts all the attention to itself in any flower garden. Most of these varieties were created with the expectation of a "garden drama". For example, Echinacea Fatal Attraction with reddish-black peduncles and magenta-pink, literally luminous petals. At the same time, it goes well with other plants in the flower garden.

Flower Echinacea Green Envy changes color from green in half bloom to lilac-pink - this tone gradually spreads from the center of the flower, and the green turns pale and remains only at the tips of the petals. It grows pretty fast. An absolutely fantastic variety that allows day after day to observe the play of tones on the petals.

Most red varieties of echinacea are characterized by a change in the tone of the flower over time. However, terry Echinacea Hot Papaya practically does not fade. I do not like terry echinacea (more on that later), but I made an exception for her.

Variety with simple flower tomato soup also keeps the color for a long time. The red color is so intense that it attracts attention from afar - a real "bonfire" in the flower garden. In the second year after planting on the bush Echinacea Tomato Soup I counted more than 20 flowers at the same time, while fading more faded flowers are always replaced by bright red new ones.

Without a doubt, the greenest echinacea is the variety Green Jewel selection by Piet Oudolf. Herbaceous perennials with green flowers a rarity, and echinacea did not exist such a rich green color before the appearance of this variety. Real revolution!

No other variety can be compared with it: Echinacea Green with a green center, devoid of marginal petals, looks like an alien and does not make the right impression in the garden. A pale green Jade looks like a poor relative against the background of Green Jewel, besides, she reacts badly to rain. One at Echinacea Green Jewel disadvantage - fragility. But I will still buy and plant it, even if I have to do it every 3-4 years.

Echinacea for collectors

The most yellow Echinacea strange (Echinacea paradoxa). It is the only species among Echinacea that has yellow flowers. Long narrow golden petals, a high conical center - everything in this flower resembles the closest relative of rudbeckia. Echinacea is strangely low (50 cm), while striving to lie down on the ground - it may need a garter. Quite winter-hardy, but grows rather slowly. Blooms in early July. This species is more for a collection than for decorating flower beds. However, it was he who became one of the parents of the "colored" hybrid varieties echinacea.

Charming inhabitant of the rocky prairie - Echinacea pale (Echinacea pallida) reaches a height of 90-120 cm, the stems are strongly branched. Pink narrow and long (up to 9 cm) petals are lowered down, which gives flowering plant very graceful, elegant look. The flower of this echinacea does not look like a chamomile at all. It’s just a pity that she needs exceptionally well-drained soil - on my loam, it steadily fell out after wintering, and I stopped buying it.

Failed experiments

In a series of echinacea of American selection big sky includes hybrid fragrant varieties the most interesting colors. Most famous Echinacea Sunrise, Sunset, Sundown, Twilight, Harvest Moon. Unfortunately, they do not succeed often in culture: they grow poorly, fall out after wintering, weakly hold the declared color - all these features are also noted by European flower growers. I had several years Echinacea Sundown, while annually by the middle of summer its foliage turned brown (it did not dry out, but rather mummified, retaining its volume).

I prefer simple varieties to terry varieties - they retain their decorative effect longer. Their dried seedlings can be admired in late autumn, while varieties with double flowers, fading, look rather sloppy. Especially if new flowers keep appearing and appearing, and the old ones have turned into untidy shaggy brown balls. A striking example of this is Echinacea Coconut Lime. A pleasant light green color at the beginning of flowering, it seems quite harmonious.

Among the countless varieties and hybrids of sweet peppers, there are such as, for example, Ramiro peppers, whose popularity is literally global. And if most of the vegetables on the shelves of supermarkets are nameless, and it is almost impossible to find out about their varietal affiliation, then the name of this Ramiro pepper will certainly be on the package. And, as my experience has shown, this pepper is worth knowing about it and other gardeners. That is why this article was written.

Autumn is the busiest time. It is no longer hot, in the morning there is heavy dew. Since the earth is still warm, and foliage has already attacked from above, creating a very special microclimate in the surface layer, the mushrooms are very comfortable. Mushroom pickers are also comfortable at this time, especially in the mornings when it is cooler. It's time for both to meet. And, if not introduced to each other - get to know each other. In this article I will introduce you to exotic, little-known and not always edible mushrooms that look like corals.

Ajvar from pepper - vegetable caviar or thick vegetable sauce from bell pepper with eggplant. Peppers for this recipe are baked, and for quite a long time, then they are also stewed. Add to ajvar onion, tomatoes, eggplant. For harvesting for the winter, caviar is sterilized. Despite the simple names ("sticky" or "indoor maple") and the status of a modern substitute indoor hibiscus, abutilons - plants are far from the simplest. They grow well, bloom profusely and delight with a healthy look of greenery only in optimal conditions. On thin leaves, any deviations from comfortable lighting or temperatures and violations in care quickly appear. The idea of growing vegetables on the grass, under the grass and in the grass is at first scary, until you feel the naturalness of the process: in nature, everything happens that way. With the obligatory participation of all soil living creatures: from bacteria and fungi to moles and toads. Each of them contributes. Traditional tillage with digging, loosening, fertilizing, fighting all those we consider pests destroys the biocenoses that have been created for centuries. Moreover, it requires high costs labor and resources.

What to do instead of a lawn? So that all this beauty does not turn yellow, does not hurt and at the same time looks like a lawn ... I hope that the smart and quick-witted reader is already smiling. After all, the answer suggests itself - if nothing is done, nothing will happen. Of course, there are several solutions that can be used, and with their help, reduce the area of the lawn, and therefore reduce the laboriousness of caring for it. I propose to consider alternatives and discuss their pros and cons.

Tomato sauce with onion and sweet pepper - thick, fragrant, with pieces of vegetables. The sauce cooks quickly and turns out thick because this recipe is with pectin. Make such preparations at the end of summer or autumn, when the vegetables have ripened under the sun in the beds. From bright, red tomatoes you get the same bright homemade ketchup. This sauce is a ready-made spaghetti dressing, and you can also just spread it on bread - very tasty. For better preservation, you can add a little vinegar.

This year I often saw a picture: among the luxurious green crown of trees and shrubs, here and there, like candles, the tops of the shoots are “burning”. This is chlorosis. Most of us know about chlorosis from school biology lessons. I remember that this is a lack of iron ... But chlorosis is an ambiguous concept. And not always lightening the foliage means a lack of iron. What is chlorosis, what our plants lack in chlorosis and how to help them, we will tell in the article.

Autumn for me is dahlias. Mine begin to bloom already in June, and all summer the neighbors look over the fence to me, reminding me that I promised them a few tubers or seeds by autumn. In September, a tart note appears in the aroma of these flowers, hinting at the approaching cold. So, it's time to start preparing plants for a long cold winter. In this article I will share my secrets autumn care for perennial dahlias and preparing them for winter storage.

To date, the efforts of breeders have bred, according to various sources, from seven to ten thousand (!) varieties of cultivated apple trees. But with their huge variety in private gardens, as a rule, only a couple of popular and beloved varieties grow. Apple trees are large trees with a spreading crown, and you cannot grow many of them in one area. But what if you try to grow columnar varieties of this crop? In this article I will talk about such varieties of apple trees.

Pinjur - Balkan eggplant caviar with sweet peppers, onions and tomatoes. Distinctive feature dishes - eggplants and peppers are first baked, then peeled and simmered for a long time in a brazier or in a saucepan with a thick bottom, adding the rest of the vegetables indicated in the recipe. The caviar is very thick, with a bright, rich taste. In my opinion, this cooking method is the best of all known. Although it is more troublesome, the result compensates for the labor costs.

Echinacea-many-sided beauty

Echinacea is an unpretentious plant in culture, striking the eye with a multitude of bright, very decorative, large flowers of various colors, a bit like daisies.

Bright, very decorative, large, varied in color, a bit like daisies

It is also a noble honey plant that will attract many to your garden and decorate it even more, dressing it up with bright colors of its flowers. Modern varietal Echinacea amaze with a variety of colors, they are not only purple, but also white, pink, yellow, raspberry, salmon and even orange.

Planting echinacea

Having invited echinacea to your garden, keep in mind that in the first year of life it forms only a rosette with leaves, and blooms only in the second! Flowering begins around mid-July, continues until mid-September.

“Growing echinacea will not take you much time if you immediately create the most suitable conditions for the plant that will fully meet its needs,” I read in one of the gardening magazines and decided to follow the sensible advice. I studied everything about echinacea: what temperatures this plant likes, on what soils it grows better, what it needs to be applied, and so on. Having drawn the appropriate conclusions from what she had read in specialized publications and on endless Internet spaces, she began landing.

So, we plant echinacea only in the sun, in the shade and even in partial shade, this heat-loving beauty will simply die. Carefully choosing a place to plant where it can grow for about 5 years. Remember that echinacea is not particularly demanding on the composition of the soil. The only thing is that it grows poorly and develops on light sandy soils. We decided on the place - we proceed to landing.

For planting, we prepare small holes about 5 cm deep with a distance of 30 cm. We pour a little on the bottom of these holes and only after that we plant the plant.

We plant echinacea only in the sun

If you bought an adult echinacea, there are quite a lot of them sold today - in small containers and pots, then you can plant it throughout the season. To do this, you need to dig a fairly large hole (about 40 cm deep) and fill it 1/3 with a mixture consisting of equal parts of sand, garden soil and compost. Echinacea, together with a clod of earth, must be carefully transferred from the pot into the pit and planted at the same depth at which it grew in the pot.

Reproduction of echinacea

Echinacea is easily propagated by seeds. They can be sown as open ground, and in pre-prepared containers. I sow only in containers, and why, you will learn a little later.

So, we sow early enough - at the end of February, in a container with, to a depth of about 0.5 cm. Sprinkle them on top with literally a millimeter layer of ordinary sand, after which we gently moisten this sand with a spray gun. Before the seeds germinate, we nervously worry - at least it happened to me) By the way, I forgot to mention that echinacea is one of the few plants whose seeds germinate more easily at a temperature of about +13°C.

Seeds do not germinate for a long time, and the first time I sowed, I was very worried, thinking that I had done something wrong. But then, almost 1.5 months after sowing (namely, this is how much the seeds of this plant require for germination), a miracle happened - tiny seedlings appeared above a thin layer of sand. So, precisely because these seedlings in the first few weeks after the appearance are in great need of moisture and warmth, which are easy to provide at home and completely impossible on the street, I do not sow echinacea seeds in open ground.

In early May, a little grown seedlings are needed. Further, the seedlings do not need special care, just occasionally loosen the soil around them and water moderately.

Echinacea can also be propagated by dividing the bush, which is best produced in April. For better education we immerse the roots of the delenka for a couple of hours in a liquid solution and plant them, trying not to deepen the root collars, which should not be below the soil level.

Echinacea Care

Echinacea, as I wrote above, is completely unpretentious in care, but you still have to pay a little attention to it. First of all, she loves watering very much - quite plentiful and preferably evening.

Echinacea is very responsive to annual application and. During the season, it is enough to feed it only twice: in the spring, about a week after planting - as soon as the plant starts to grow, and also during the budding period.

In late autumn, around the end of October, all the stems must be cut off, and the root neck should be lightly composted and covered with a layer of ordinary dry leaves. They do this so that in the event of a cold winter with little snow, the echinacea does not freeze out.

Types and varieties of echinacea

The genus Echinacea consists of 9 species, each of which is very good.

Although in our time most gardeners grow echinacea strange and, rightly considering them the most decorative.

Echinacea strange (Echinacea paradoxa)

The only one in the family who can boast of a beautiful bright yellow color is the strange echinacea.

Echinacea purpurea (Echinacea purpurea)

Echinacea purpurea is the owner of spectacular large flowers, reaching 12 cm in diameter, in the center of which rises a brownish core, similar to a dome. At home, in the Atlantic North America and Mexico, Echinacea purpurea grows massively in the wild, having chosen rocky hills, fields, limestone wastelands and forests. Throughout the summer, colorful spots of echinacea adorn heat-bleached landscapes and enliven them, filling them with brightness and even coolness.

Of the many varieties of purple echinacea, gardeners prefer to grow the following.

Variety "Cranberry Cupcake"

One of the most beautiful terry varieties, the flowers of which have a rich pink-purple hue.

Variety "Cranberry Cupcake"

Everyone perceives Echinacea as a classic garden and medicinal plant with very beautiful flowers, hard to the touch and retaining its special pink-purple color for a long time. This beauty adorns the splendor of powerful curtain bushes all autumn. And at the same time, the genus is quite extensive and not deprived of the attention of breeders who diligently breed all new varieties. AT last years among all the original selective forms, it was echinacea that broke into the ranks of the most "renewable" crops. The number of new varieties that move further and further color palette from a basic and very attractive plant with daisy flowers with an exclusive shade of pink color, not only surprises, but also makes you reconsider the view of echinacea as not very popular ornamental plant. Today echinacea can boast bright varieties with lemon, yellow, orange color, interesting golden tints and unusual shape flowers. These outlandish beauties, which are not very similar to echinacea, can become one of the brightest exotics in any flower garden and even act as a soloist. Let's get acquainted with the most interesting and original varieties echinacea closer.

AT this wealth of golden yellow color will demonstrate a surprisingly imposing variety " Harvest Moon". The reed flowers (petals) of this echinacea droop slightly, gathering in an elegant circle around a fairly large brown spherical “needle” convex core with a golden sheen. This is one of the most luxuriant varieties: numerous flowers at the peak of flowering seem to be collected in lush bouquets. Graceful, as if absorbed Sun rays plants delight with a play of color, the effect of an inner glow, a noble palette. In height, this variety of echinacea will not exceed 80 cm. The charming Harvest Moon blooms without interruption from July to October.

Variety " Art's Pride" completely different. The core of the flower is small, rounded, its diameter is half that of the length of the petals, which grow almost straight. About 75 cm tall, this Echinacea captivates with rich orange tones. Bright coral-salmon petals of a rich tone are gathered around a dark, almost black center with rare color highlights, which creates the effect of a luminous halo. In contrast to the bright flowers, which captivate with their elegant noble beauty, the rich and dark emerald green makes this Echinacea variety, which blooms from July to mid-autumn, a real picturesque masterpiece.

Very similar in flower structure to "Art" s Pride "and less elegant with a large core and drooping petals variety" hot summer”, which, perhaps, has the most “clean” palette among all varieties of echinacea. Bright scarlet, not muted orange and transitional tones are presented on one plant, turning it into a real fiery bouquet: flowers of different colors open at the same time.

Bright orange, which can only be found in the garden with nasturtium, is inherent in another wonderful variety of echinacea - “ Tiki Torch". Charming and rich pure orange color, which at the base of the petals turns into a flashy red-orange, is inherent in the long petals in a circle gathered around a small, green-red original core. Combining with the most bright color forest greenery inherent in leaves and stems, these incredible the brightest flowers seem to have descended from the canvases of the Impressionists.

Looks very original and variety " Jade”, whose name (from English Jade) fully reflects the richness of the palette. White, densely planted, dissected at the tips of the petals with a slight mother-of-pearl tint are gathered around a large rounded core of a rich emerald green color, which is also exactly repeated in greenery, buds, shoots. From a distance, this variety of echinacea looks like a bizarre thistle, but close up, it looks like an amazing dried flower. Fresh, with a cold palette, 'Jade' is one of the unique garden cultivars that looks like a tropical exotic.

One of the most fragrant varieties of echinacea " Fragrant Angel” is valued not only for its luxurious sweet smell, but also for the largest core among all echinacea, which looks more like a pompom placed on top of a flower. At first green, then becoming beige-golden, the ball in diameter exceeds the length of the petals, whose soft creamy-radiant color gives the whole flower an amazing pastel harmony. Watercolor in color, very delicate, with a picturesque play of shades, this "Angel" seems to be a magical vision, glowing from within.

Charming " Cleopatra” seems to be small suns frozen on the bushes. Around the brown-green core is a dense circle of thin and long petals of a bright lemon-yellow color, which at the base of the petal turns into almost white. Thanks to this transition, the flowers seem extremely large, and the unusual greenery - dark, with a marsh tint - only emphasizes their bright beauty.

Today, terry varieties that look like unusual fluffy pompoms are becoming more and more popular. One of the most famous and today - recognized classic variety « Coconut Lime”, the very first white terry form of echinacea. Resembling a huge ball with lower white petals diverging around, this beauty is painted in a light green-yellowish color scheme with an almost amber center and seems like a bizarre mistake of nature. Light, tender, with a powerful bush, this echinacea conquers with a combination of the original color, the strangest asymmetric shape and tenderness.

The brightest pink color can be found in another terry echinacea variety " Razzmatazz”, also one of the first obtained thanks to Dutch breeders. This beauty with an even color is a bit like a jellyfish: a ball-core, similar to a fur head, at the wide base ends with a row of wide petals that look down like “legs”. The greens of this echinacea are muted, which only emphasizes the brightness of the pink with a hint of fuchsia.

Variety " Kim's Knee High"- this is one of the most unusual varieties of squat echinacea, whose growth does not exceed half a meter. Spectacular, catchy, it combines an asymmetrical drooping, almost inverted circle of bright pink petals, whose color is reminiscent of "Razzmatazz" with a seemingly artificial core that seems to be a perfect ball thanks to light orange dots on dark cherry needle petals with a bronze sheen. Bright, motley, with completely different colors of the core and base of "Kim" s Knee High "against the background of unusually lush gray-green greenery, it seems like an elegant decoration, and not an unpretentious flower.

Which went on sale in 2013, Special attention should be given to Echinacea. Apart from bright color and a variety of forms, these flowers will delight the gardener with unpretentiousness and ease of care.
