, Morena, Morana) in Slavic mythology- Goddess of death and winter. Her name comes from the root "mor", meaning death; in our language there are many words related to the name of this formidable deity: haze (gloom), zamerek (first winter), frosts (initial frosts), finally, pestilence (epidemic) and mara (evil spirit, ghost). Some researchers folk tradition they see Marena in a Russian familiar to each of us since childhood fairy tales- remember her gloomy abode, surrounded by human skulls impaled on stakes ... However, Makosh is also associated with the same character - the goddess of fate, harvest, female magic and needlework ... we will talk about her another time.

death in folk performances can take on different forms. Sometimes she is a monster that combines human and bestial features - we find such a description of Death, for example, in a verse about Anika the warrior:
“Anika is going through the field,
A miracle rides towards Anika:
He has a human head
The miracle has hair to the waist,
The body of the miracle is animal,
And the miracle has horse legs "

Often the goddess of Death is depicted as a skeleton with bared teeth or an old woman - this image is very common today: who among us does not know who the "old woman with a scythe" is? Speaking of the scythe, in addition to this tool, Marena seemed to our ancestors armed with a sickle, saw, spade and trident. A.N. Afanasiev, an outstanding Russian scientist of the century before last, writes about this: “Such a situation directly followed from the metaphorical expressions of the ancient language, which compared the destructive power of death with concepts that are closest and accessible to the farmer and carpenter: Death mows and rakes in human lives, like a scythe and a rake field grass; reaps the human race like a sickle of ears (“like unripe wheat”); she, as it were, takes out an invisible saw and, rubbing it over the bones and veins of the back, relaxes the person - and he falls like a sawn tree; Finally, Death, working with a spade, digs fresh graves for people. Our forefathers even spoke about the war in the language of peasant labor - the Tale of Igor's Campaign says:

“On Nemiz, sheaves lay their heads,
thresh the chains with haraluzhny,
they put the belly on the totse,
blow the soul from the body.

Another image of Death is also known: sometimes Marena comes in the guise of a bride. Classic example such a perception - "Black Raven", a folk song about a dying warrior:

"You tell my dear
I married another
Kalena arrow crowned
In the midst of the fatal battle"

Death is a force hostile to people, but our ancestors did not consider it some kind of “absolute evil”. What would the world be like if the obsolete did not go away? Death and Life, Winter and Summer, Darkness and Light are parts of a single whole, whose name is the Universe ... In one folk tale the cunning soldier put Death in a sack and hung it on the top of a tall aspen. “From this very time, the people ceased to die: to be born - is born, and does not die! Many years have passed, the soldier does not remove all the bags. It happened once that he entered the city; goes, and an ancient old woman meets him: in which direction the wind blows, she falls in that direction. “Look, what an old woman! - said the soldier, - tea, it's time to die! - Yes, father! - answers the old woman, - it's time for me to die; even at the time you put Death in a sack, there was only one hour left of my whole life in this world. I would be glad to rest, but without Death the earth does not accept, and you, servant, for this from God an unforgiven sin! after all, not one soul in the world is tormented in the same way!
The attitude towards death in the old days was completely different. Our ancestors did not have a panicky fear of it, which is so characteristic of modern people, brought up in the spirit of "scientific atheism" - after all, for them, death was not the end of existence, but a transition to the Other World. I.S. Turgenev wrote in his Notes of a Hunter: “The Russian peasant is dying amazingly! His state before death cannot be called either indifference or stupidity; he dies as if performing a ritual: cold and simple. Can still be found in Russian cemeteries headstones, which indicate that the deceased knew (!!!) the term own death, he made a stone himself and said goodbye to relatives and friends before leaving ... How far we are from such a vision of the World ...

In the old days, the pagans of many nations had their own goddesses of death in mythology. They were feared and worshiped in order to protect their home from illness and grief associated with the loss of loved ones. Our ancestors were no exception in this regard. The Slavic goddess of death bore the name Marena, which was abbreviated as Mara. In Sanskrit, the word "mara" means "destroying", "killing". The roots of this name stretch to the Indo-European "mar / pestilence", associated with pestilence and epidemic. Note that the goddess of death was related not only to the transition to the world of the dead, but also to the rituals of calling rain and to the seasonal periods of resurrection and dying of nature.

Genealogy

According to one of the myths, Mara is the daughter of the Black Snake, who guards the transition along the Kalinov Bridge from Yavi to Nav, and the granddaughter of the Lizard, the father of universal evil and the lord of the underworld. Her husband is Koschey (one of the images of Chernobog), who is her brother on her father's side. From him, the goddess of death gave birth to daughters: Ledyanitsa, Nemocha, Vodyanitsa, Zamora, Snezhana and others associated with crop failure, dying, pestilence, etc.

Image of Mary

In Slavic beliefs, the attitude towards this character is ambivalent. In some myths, the goddess of death appears in the form of a hunched old woman with loose and long hair or a shaggy tall woman dressed in rags and all black. In other legends, Marena is a beautiful dark-haired girl in white or red clothes, who sometimes appears among the ripening bread. From this we can conclude that for the Slavs the goddess of death was neither good nor evil. For the ancestors, she was the embodiment not so much as fate, on which the changes in the lives of the inhabitants of the house depended. On the one hand, it brings death, but at the same time it also bestows new life. Marena's favorite occupation is needlework. Moreover, it was believed that she uses the threads of fate of creatures living on earth in the yarn. Depending on how they are woven into the pattern created by the goddess, certain turning points in life will occur. And if the thread is cut, then a person or another creature will cease to exist.

Mara's abilities

Slavic goddess death is able to stop the passage of time, both locally and globally. Its possibilities are infinitely great: it controls the death and life of not only ordinary beings, but also the immortal gods. In addition, Mara is a beautiful sorceress, capable of changing the world beyond recognition, but only for a short time.

How the goddess of death was worshiped

It was not customary to erect temples in honor of Marena. The goddess of death had several permanent places in which she was honored. At the same time, the rituals took place not just like that, on open space, but at an idol carved from wood. In addition, for the same purposes, sometimes a straw image of Mary, surrounded by stones, was installed on the ground. After the ceremony was completed, all this was taken apart and either burned or thrown into the river. Marena was revered on February 15, and straw, flowers and various fruits were brought to her as a gift. Very rarely, only in the years of great epidemics, animals were sacrificed to the goddess of death, depriving them of their lives right at the altar itself.

Morena is the goddess of barren, painful decrepitude, the withering of life and its inevitable end - death.
Everything falls into oblivion, life fades, nature falls asleep.
Other names of Morana are Maara, Marena, Morena, Mora, Pestilence, haze, darkness, haze, fool, death.
However, common concepts about Good and Evil, about Life and Death are not applicable to Nature.
In the Universe, Life and Death are one whole. If not for Moran, Nature-Makosh would not be able to rest, constantly bear fruit and sooner or later would become barren.

That is why the image of Mary was seen as a combination of birth, fertility and death, necessary for the renewal and continuation of Life on Earth. It gives you the opportunity to relax natural world, cleanses it, like a predator, from the weak and sick.
There is no death in nature - a grain dies as a grain in order to be reborn as an ear, the earth falls asleep for the winter in order to be reborn with new forces in the spring ...

So the human soul is eternal, but the carnal shell is temporary, it wears out like clothes and needs to be changed.
After the death of the soul good man is released, and become the Spirit-Patron of his Family, in order to later incarnate again. And the bad - disappears, dissolves in space.
It is with these ideas that the oldest Slavic funeral rite is associated - the burning of the deceased on a special fire - Krade. Fire is sacred, it allows the soul to immediately free itself from bodily fetters and, together with smoke, ascend to Light Svarga, Iriy, Slavic Paradise to the Ancestors and Gods.
The Moranes were also grateful for the freshness that comes with frost, snowballs, patterns on the windows and all kinds of winter fun.
The Slavs did not forget about how Morana "sent a cold and froze the fierce enemies of Russia, protecting her possessions and her people."
March 22 (berezozola, whistle, dry according to the Slavic calendar) - on the day spring equinox when spring is gaining its highest power and strength, they arrange funny Games and fun, pancakes are baked (a symbol of the sun and the coming spring) and an effigy of Mary is burned. This ritual symbolizes the end of Morana's time and her farewell, along with frost, snow and blizzards. Since ancient times, this holiday has been called Komoyeditsa or Shrovetide (from the ancient "com" - a bear that wakes up in the spring).

The word "pestilence" means the total and sudden death of entire peoples and states, "starve" - to kill.
In these words, the memory of a cruel, implacable goddess is preserved, to whom no victims are pleasing, except for withered flowers, rotten fruits, fallen leaves and extinct human lives.
In Ukraine, a rite-amulet against this evil force has been preserved. On the eve of Ivan's Day, they make a straw idol Kupalg - sometimes the size of a child, and sometimes the real height of a person. They put on a women's shirt, a monista and wreaths of flowers. Then they cut down the tree, hung it with ribbons and wreaths and set it up in the place chosen for the game.
This tree is called Morena; a dressed-up doll is placed under it, and next to it is a table with various snacks and drinks.
Then ignite big bonfire and begin to jump over it in pairs (well done with the girls), holding a Kupala doll in their hands. Games and songs continue until dawn.
The next day, the doll and Morena are brought to the river, their decorations are torn off and they are thrown into the water, hoping to save themselves from illness, death, and, of course, other worldly troubles in the near future.
Akin to Morena and Martsana - the goddess of death of all living beings except humans: it is with her help that hunters, fishermen and trappers get prey.

Slavic mythology

Morana (Mara, Morena) - a powerful and formidable Deity, the Goddess of Winter and Death, Koshchei's wife and Lada's daughter, Zhiva and Lely's sister.
Marana among the Slavs in ancient times was considered the embodiment of unclean forces. She had no family and wandered in the snow, visiting people from time to time to do her dirty work. The name Morana (Morena) is indeed related to such words as "pestilence", "haze", "gloom", "haze", "fool", "death".
Legends tell how Morana, with evil henchmen, every morning tries to lie in wait and destroy the Sun, but every time she retreats in horror before his radiant power and beauty.
Her symbols are the Black Moon, piles of broken skulls, and a sickle with which she cuts the Threads of Life.
The possessions of Morena, according to Ancient Tales, lie behind the Black Currant River, which separates Yav and Nav, across which the Kalinov Bridge is thrown, guarded by the Three-Headed Serpent ...
In contrast to Zhiva and Yarila, Marena embodies the triumph of Mari - "Dead Water" (Will to Death), that is, the Force opposite to the Life-Giving Solar Yari. But the Death bestowed by Marena is not a complete interruption of the Currents of Life as such, but is only a transition to Another Life, to a new Beginning, for it is so laid down by the Almighty Sort that after Winter, which takes away everything that has become obsolete, a new Spring always comes .. .
The straw effigy, which to this day is still burned in some places during the feast of the ancient Maslenitsa at the time of the vernal equinox, undoubtedly belongs to Morena, the Goddess of death and cold. And every winter she takes over.
But even after the departure of Winter-Death, her numerous servants, maras, remained with people.

According to the legends of the ancient Slavs, these are evil spirits of diseases, they carry their heads under their arms, wander at night under the windows of houses and whisper the names of household members: whoever responds to the voice of mara will die.
The Germans are sure that the Maruts are the spirits of fierce warriors. The Swedes and Danes consider them to be the souls of the dead, the Bulgarians are sure that the Marys are the souls of babies who died unbaptized. The Belarusians believed that Morana conveys the dead to Baba Yaga, who feeds on the souls of the dead.
In Sanskrit, the word "ahi" means serpent, snake.

DEAD MOUNTAIN

In the year 1200 after the birth of Christ, a great and terrible miracle happened in the village of Diveevo. On the 26th day of the month of senozornik, in other words, on the 26th day, the youth Ash, baptized by Bartholomew, collected medicinal herbs on Curly Mountain at sunset.
And suddenly he sees: walking past an oak burned by lightning, a woman in a white robe, some sewn with gold, and in a golden crown. In one hand she held outlandish, pale flowers, as if made of wax, and in the other, a scythe with a silver knob.
And the youth Yasenya became so scared that for a short time he fainted and lost his mind, and when he came to himself, he rushed with all his might to his native Diveevo, told his father-mother about what he saw.

You, Ash, are a well-known master of scary tales to weave, - said the father. - Know lie, but do not lie.

Yes, the kid is not lying, do you hear? Trouble has come. What year is it?
Leap year, in addition, say the astrologers, the end of the century-century. So the evil Morena is coming to us - it will wipe everyone out overnight. This has already happened when I myself was in adolescence.

Oh, oh, all-merciful Svarog and you, the Lord-Savior, what are you punishing for ?! howled the mother.

Come on, get me off the stove! - commanded the great-grandfather, and when they put him on the bench, he said: - You, granddaughters, take the brown horse out of the stable. You will put me on horseback, you will tie your legs to the stirrups so that you do not fall, you will give me a battle bow and a quiver of arrows. You, a woman, run around the village, tell people to jump out of their houses and fall on the grass in a layer, like the dead, struck down overnight by lightning. And you, Ash, when you see Morena again, start sobbing and reproaching Perun for killing innocent people. Alive! No time to hesitate!

After some time, seeing Morena at the end of the village, the youth Ash burst into bitter tears, began to wail loudly and threaten heaven with his fist:

The omnipotent Perun! Why did he punish innocent people with fierce death from his arrows? Why are you messing around?!

Morena looked in bewilderment at the defeated people, approached the youth, looked into his eyes with her dead eyes - and walked to the river, and then hid behind the river in an aspen forest, making her way to no one knows where.

After some more time, people began to rise from the grass, thanks to Svarog, Svarozhich and Christ the Savior, who did not allow the untimely death of the entire village. And the peasants, together with the lad Yasen, went to Curly Mountain.

And what? At its foot, near the spring, they saw a great and terrible miracle. Two skeletons rested on the grass: a rider and a horse. The horseman's legs were tied to the stirrups, and he held a combat bow in his hands, but there was not a single arrow in the quiver.

The peasants were silent for a long time, and the lad Yasen shed tears over his great-grandfather Rodomysl, in baptism Antip, and over the bulan horse.

The next day, right there, on Mount Kudryavaya, they buried the bones in the ground, hoisting a wooden cross. Only since that time this mountain, near the village of Diveeva, has been called Dead.

"DO YOU SLEEP, GOOD PEOPLE?"

Morena either flies like a butterfly at night and suffocates people while they sleep, or roams the earth. He will dress up in his best clothes, put a crown on his head, pick up a bouquet of flowers that bloom only on grave hills and are called, as if in mockery, immortals - and walks through cities and villages, stealthily peeks into houses. Sometimes he knocks on the window and asks:

What you are doing? Do you sleep, good people?

If they answer:

Sleep! - Morena whispers:

Sleep forever! - and after that, someone living in this house will get sick, or even die.

A. REMIZOV. MARA MORENA

He walks through the meadows, along the field of Mara Morena, cuckoos softly and sadly, exhausts the road with melancholy The leaves are noisy on the staggering aspen without wind. Boiling boiling-key combustible.

Mara Morena walks, does not trample grass, does not break flowers. Halfway along, she looked back - her sad eyes looked, - she shone a star in the distance ... Mara Morena will look, she will enlighten - she will brighten up the whole world and destroy her. Everything will follow her.

Everything will die Mara Morena - in one hand a sickle, in the other a green wreath. It will dry up the heart, knock down the age-old, break the inseparable, blow the winds, cover the warm sun with loose snow, wave the warm oaks.

And the day will be eclipsed with joy.

And the darling will not know about the darling, they will forget: am I you, are you me ...

Mara-Morena goes, muddied the Currant River, opens the water lilies and goes further, ascends the mountains - the mountains jostle, and further along the valley, across a large field.

And an unfavorable cloud with heavy rain rose up after her, unbearable.

The Mogul bird rushes like a stone to the stars, and happiness-feather, boiling with resin, falls to the happy one.

Stop! Do not humiliate, do not tame the innocent heart, overflowing.

There the wolf, sensing his death, howled.

And the sky merges with the earth.
