Search technology for the dead or missing
during the Great Patriotic War using Internet resources

Heroic and at the same time tragic date - the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the battles for Voronezh region will be celebrated in 2012. A year later, it will be 70 years since the liberation Voronezh region from the Nazi invaders. Hundreds of thousands of defenders and liberators died in the battle for the Voronezh region. More than a hundred thousand soldiers, officers, underground workers, partisans, and civilians lie in mass graves. Many single and fraternal burials are still nameless or they do not include defenders who fell in battle for a farm, village, town, city. The experience of search work shows that even in those areas of the region where there were no hostilities, the graves of the defenders of our Motherland remain nameless.

So, in the city of Kalach, in a mass grave No. 142, 368 who died in hospitals from wounds were buried. However, there is no information about 159 soldiers. The same situation persists in other military burials. In the Kantemirovskiy district, on the farm Vasilievka, there is an unmarked mass grave of the liberators of the farm. It was possible to find out that tankmen of the 173rd tank brigade were buried there. On January 15, 1943, two T-34 tank crews of Lieutenant Nikolai Sergeevich Skobeev and Lieutenant Anatoly Georgievich Rysev made the only simultaneous ramming of two enemy tanks in the Ostrogozhsk-Rossosh operation. Driver-mechanics senior sergeants Matvey Ivanovich Safronov and Nikolai Filippovich Shutov, radio machine gunners sergeants Vasily Ilyich Chadin and Ivan Timofeevich Solovyov, tower commanders sergeants Ivan Savelyevich Povodkov and Alexei Illarionovich Chuenkov, machine gunner junior sergeant Fayaz Khamatkurov died in the battle. Tank commanders and driver mechanics were presented with the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, but were awarded Orders of the Patriotic War, 1st degree. Preserving the memory of the defenders of the motherland is the duty and obligation of descendants.

In accordance with the List of instructions of the President of the Russian Federation dated April 23, 2003 No. pr-698 on the organization of military memorial work in the Russian Federation and Decree No. 37 dated January 22, 2006 "Issues of perpetuating the memory of those who died defending the Fatherland", the Ministry of Defense of the Russian The Federation has created a Generalized Computer Data Bank containing information about the defenders of the Fatherland who died and went missing during the Great Patriotic War, as well as in the post-war period (OBD "Memorial"). The data for it are taken from official archival documents stored in the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Central Naval Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Russian State Military Archive, the State Archive of the Russian Federation and its regional branches, the Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation for perpetuating the memory of those who died defending the Fatherland. The main array of documents is reports of combat units about irretrievable losses, other archival documents specifying losses (funerals, documents from hospitals and medical battalions, trophy cards of Soviet prisoners of war, etc.), as well as burial passports Soviet soldiers and officers kept at the VMC of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. All this translates into electronic form and posted on the Memorial website (http://www.obd-memorial.ru/).

Website "Feat of the People in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" (http://www.podvignaroda.mil.ru/) is also a publicly available electronic document bank that contains information about the exploits of compatriots during the war years.

Working with these Internet resources will allow all interested persons (teachers, museum managers, students and students, relatives of war veterans, relatives of fallen soldiers) to independently find and restore the history of the participation of the defenders of the Motherland in the Great Patriotic War, find out for what feats they were awarded awards.

The purpose of our work: to demonstrate a step-by-step technology for searching the Internet for materials dedicated to perpetuating the memory of those who died defending the Motherland during the Great Patriotic War, using the experience of the research activities of the employees of the OGOU DOD "OCDOGPV", as well as to intensify the work of schools, museums, enthusiasts to preserve the memory of the defenders Fatherland.

Step one. In order for the search to be effective, it is necessary to collect as much information about the wanted person as possible. The main criteria for the search are: full name, date and place of birth, MER of conscription, military rank, military unit number (or field mail number of the last letter); information about relatives: full name and where they lived before the war. It is important to remember that the search result depends on the degree of reliability of the data.

Step two. Very often there are errors in the spelling of surnames, names, patronymics. You need to know that not always literate people filled out the loss reports, who could distort the last name and first name, write an abbreviated middle name or put only initials. An example is the incorrect spelling of the surname of the platoon commander of the 796th rifle regiment of the 141st rifle division, Mikhail Kuzmich Bavkun, who anticipated the feat of Alexander Matrosov on July 17, 1942 in Voronezh: the report on irretrievable losses says bofkun, at the mass grave - Bovkun. Instead of Rozhnov wrote Rozhkov, patronymic Maksimovich recorded as Moksimovich. Errors in non-Russian surnames are especially common. In order for the search to be successful, you must enter all possible options spelling of surnames, names, patronymics. Many questions can be answered already at this stage, up to the establishment of the date, place of death and the exact place of burial.

Step three. If searches on the "Memorial" website turned out to be unsuccessful, you should turn to the "Feat of the People" website. During the war, there were cases when the names of an already awarded person were not on the lists of a military unit. For example, Belinsky Vladimir Vasilievich from Voronezh (not listed on the Memorial website) was called up on July 4, 1942 as a deputy political instructor in the 425th artillery regiment of the 232nd rifle division, died on September 19, 1942 on the right bank of the Don, north of Voronezh, correcting the fire of our artillery. V.V. Belinsky was awarded the Order of the Red Banner. Only from the award list was it possible to find out the fate of the hero.

Step four. If the name, patronymic, surname are rare, then the search can be conducted by name. For example, near Zemlyansk on July 8, 1942, junior lieutenant of the 507th short-range bomber regiment Artyusha Ogondzhanovich Ogondzhanyan repeated the feat of Captain Gastello, sending his burning plane to a cluster of enemy tanks. We request the name of Artyusha in the advanced search in all types of documents, except for the Books of Memory and summary records.

In the "Search Results" we see errors made in the surname and patronymic by the clerk of the unit. By opening the "Report" tab, you can find out who was in Ogonjanyan's crew. Together with him, gunner-bombardier Matvey Grigoryevich Mugerman or Mucherman and gunner-radio operator Ivan Alekseevich Mikhailov. For this feat A.O. Ogonjanyan was posthumously awarded the Order of the Red Banner. Unfortunately, other crew members were not awarded.

Step five. If the unit where the wanted person served is known, it is necessary to include the abbreviated name of the unit and the year of interest in the advanced search. Based on these data, it is possible to determine where the formation fought at the time of interest to us, its losses, where the dead soldiers are buried (from the burial place to the area, if the wanted one is missing), who was the commander, chief of staff. For example, enter in the search bar
"159 brigade - 1942", we will open thirty pages with information, having studied which, we can trace the combat path of the unit in the south of the Voronezh region in July 1942, find out the names of the dead and missing.

Let's trace the fate of the commander, Lieutenant Colonel Anton Evstafievich Grinko. From July 6 to 9, he defended the farm of Rybalchino, Rossoshansky district, was taken prisoner in the area of \u200b\u200bthe village of Kazanskaya, made two escapes, was moved from camp to camp, released in 1945.

A fragment of a map of a prisoner of war A.E. Grinko

A fragment of a German leaflet with photographs of Red Army commanders who fled from captivity. In the center - A.E. Grinko.
Step six. You can search by hospital number. For example, in the village of Semyonovka, Kalacheevsky district, there was a PPG 4340 hospital (field mobile hospital No. 4340) during the war. We set the task PPG 4340 in the advanced search.

The alphabetical book of the dead in the hospital and the burial places of the soldiers are opened. It was possible to establish the fate of 59 soldiers and officers, although only 22 people were taken into account in the mass grave. If the search is performed in reverse order, i.e. start it with the soldiers buried in a mass grave, then as a result you can find out the following: which units fought for the settlement, who commanded them, the battle path, how many people gave their lives for this piece of land, their short biographies, are there among the dead those awarded orders and medals of the USSR (posthumously awarded, as a rule, they accomplished a feat in the place where they were buried).

In the Voronezh region, there are many military graves that are not recorded in the TsAMO of the Russian Federation, as well as a large number of unmarked graves. The task of the descendants is to make sure that the names of the soldiers and commanders buried there are engraved on the graves. For example, in the village of Ilyinka, Kalacheevsky district, there is an unmarked grave. Lyubov Alekseevna Maklyakova, a resident of the village, told the staff of the OTSDOGPV the following: “My grandmother said that there was a gas station next to our village, behind a pine forest, during the war. This pilot was transporting fuel on the plane. Once he was hit by a German plane, right next to the village. locals saw this, ran to the crash site, but the pilot was dead. He was buried in the local cemetery. It is known that he himself was an orphan, but before the war he managed to get married. His name was Vasily Vasily Vasilevich».

During a search on the Internet, it was possible to find out that the pupil orphanage the city of Starobelsk, the commander of the 214th separate aviation communications squadron of the 272nd aviation division, junior lieutenant Vasily Vasily Andreevich On July 11, 1942, he was shot down in the air by enemy aircraft and burned down along with the aircraft. There was one less grave without a name.

General advice.

1. In the course of working with the Memorial website, it is necessary to view all reports. To do this, you can use the "VIEW REPORT" tab, which is located at the top of the document and is written in red.

2. The researcher will be able to look at the previous and subsequent sheets of the report, find out where the fighters are buried (military unit, name of the settlement, date of death, what were the names of close relatives and where they lived.).
3. The Internet resource makes it possible to compare the modern geographical name with the one that was during the Second World War. For example, a mass grave is located in the village of May 1 near Voronezh. The report says that the soldier died on the territory of the collective farm named after S.M. Budyonny Semiluksky district. Based on this, we can assume that the location of the village on May 1 coincides with the location of the collective farm during the Second World War.
4. If the search was unsuccessful, but the time of death and the military unit where the wanted person fought are known, the following algorithm of actions must be used. First, find out which of the colleagues fought and died at that time, their place of death and burial. Secondly, where did you fight in specified period military unit. According to these indirect signs, a mass grave will be found, where the wanted soldier is supposed to lie. After reviewing the lists of those in the mass grave, one can probably find the wanted man, perhaps with a distorted surname.
For example, a Red Army soldier of the 910th regiment of the 220th rifle division, Nikolai Grigorievich Demchenko, is listed as dead from wounds on 03/22/1942,
about which an entry was made in the alphabetical book of the dead of the 360th separate medical sanitary battalion of the 220th rifle division. But the place of burial is not specified. We request "360 OMSB 220 sd." and we find another document - the book of registration of the dead. It helps to determine that at that time the medical battalion was located in the village of Vareevo, Rzhevsky district, Tver region. There is no mass grave in the village. We find out that the remains of the soldiers were transferred in 1956 to the village of Efimovo in the Rzhev region.

1729 people are buried in it, of which 149 are unknown. Here, most likely, the remains of N.G. Demchenko.

5. On the website "Feat of the People", upon request, a list of those awarded since 1941 is built, i.e. at the top of the page there will be early awards, and at the bottom of the later ones.

6. If, when requesting on the “Feat of the People” website, only the place of conscription is indicated, for example, “Voronezh Mikhailovsky RVC”, then in chronological order the names of those awarded and called up from this military registration and enlistment office will line up.

7. By adding an award to the place of conscription in the advanced search, for example, the Order of the Red Banner, you can find out which of those called up from this military enlistment office were awarded the order in chronological order. You can add all the awards one by one and make a list of awarded countrymen.

A lot of people simply duplicate information about the search, not indicating either the location of the "location" of the fighter, or the software to contact.
It turns out a kind of "search in the search", and even more often - a monkey's work: there have already been cases when the search was completed long ago, the fighter was solemnly reburied, and no one updated the information.
Now I try to spread either the information that is posted in the media, or from the search teams themselves.
From time to time I look into the search group in OK to Natalya Kruglova and Tatyana Evgenievna.
But they basically search from the opposite: a fighter has been found, relatives are being sought.
This topic is about the technology of searching for those who went missing or died during the Great Patriotic War

Regarding social networks ... The other day I encountered such a situation - in one of the most popular social networks I come across a post: ".. help identify the fighter's relatives .." etc. The author is a certain search party from Rostov-on-Don with an indistinct name and a non-working link, more precisely with a link sending to newspaper article about the activities of search teams in general, asks to repost the text as much as possible. I was already on the alert, it reminded me of the annoying "... press the class if you have a heart." Moreover, in the data on the kasha fighter, he himself is from Ryazan, relatives allegedly from the Smolensk region. from Kardymov, died from wounds in Rostov, relatives are indicated ... It is not entirely clear why to look for relatives of a soldier officially buried in the Rostov cemetery, and even in such ways. I am writing to the author, offering help, indicating specialized sites, addresses of the local administration, military registration and enlistment office - in response I receive a message, the meaning of which is as follows: it is not possible for us to correspond with anyone, we have a restriction on communication with strangers. Therefore, do not be smart, but do what they ask, the maximum repost in the social. networks.
Everything fell into place here. The data is in the OBD, preferably a sanitary burial, the data is shuffled, so that it would certainly be impossible to find anyone, and mailing is done in groups by last name. In this case, the Kovalevs, can you imagine how many Kovalevs are in the Smolensk region? there is reliability and at the same time it is clear that the data has been changed. After I asked the author for at least some details, he disappeared. ON. I didn’t meet with the name given in the post in any register. Something like that. Previously, fluffy kittens were given a class, now they got to the saint. God forbid that this turns out to be the initial stage of my paranoia. And if not, you can’t call it otherwise than bestiality ..

  • Independent search for ancestors » Documents about the military and about the participants in the Second World War
This group of documents is one of the most diverse and voluminous. The documents are in different archives, and they can be divided into two periods: before the revolution and after.

Documents about the military of the pre-revolutionary period are stored in the Russian State Military Historical Archive (Moscow, 2nd Baumanskaya, 3). If your ancestor was an officer, then you may be able to find his file. If he was from the category of privates or non-commissioned officers, then in order to find information about him, you need to know the unit in which he served.

If one of your ancestors was an officer, a personal file should have been opened on him. By general rule such a personal file should be kept at the last place of registration of the military. It can also be transferred for storage to the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense in the city of Podolsk, Moscow Region.

An example from my practice: my friends' ancestors were officers, the last place of registration of which was the city of Smolensk. There were no personal files on them at TsAMO. I called the Smolensk city military enlistment office and found out that their personal files were there. When I arrived there, they were given to me for review upon presentation of a power of attorney (since they were not my relatives).

In the personal file of an officer, one of the most informative documents for a genealogist is an autobiography written by the person himself. In it, the filler indicated where and when he was born, wrote about his parents, brothers, sisters, wife and her relatives. Also in the personal file there are documents on the certification of an officer, on conferring ranks on him, on moving, etc.

In the same Smolensk military enlistment office they explained to me that there are several copies of the officer's personal file. The first copy is the most complete, and it is kept forever in the regional military registration and enlistment office, because. on its basis, a soldier is awarded a pension. The second copy is stored in the district or city military registration and enlistment office for a certain number of years and after that is subject to destruction. In the regional military registration and enlistment office, they do not always meet the needs of unofficial persons and may not allow them to get acquainted with personal files.

In addition to personal affairs, a service record was issued for officers. Such cards form the card index of officers in the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense. The card contains basic information about the officer: full name, year and place of birth, study, assignment of military ranks, promotions, family information and address. Also in the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense there is a file of officer losses. Here are information about the dead and missing officers during the Great Patriotic War.

Important! Not all officers had a personal file and service record. If a person received a rank during the Great Patriotic War and was killed a few months later, they did not have time to get all the necessary documents for him. Therefore, information about him can only remain in the file of losses of officers.

If your ancestors were privates, information about them can be found in the recruiting office and in the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense. Information about the service after the Great Patriotic War is communicated only to relatives upon request. Documents about the service during the Great Patriotic War are available to researchers.

Conscription documents may be kept at the conscription office, but in each specific case it is necessary to find out whether they have been preserved. Many documents were destroyed after the war or not preserved, perished by fire or water. In our region, all documents from the period of the Great Patriotic War were transferred to the State Archive of Administrative Bodies (GAAOSO) at 34 Lenin Ave. But on the ground, in some district military registration and enlistment offices, file cabinets were made, which remained there.

If your relative was taken prisoner during the Great Patriotic War and remained alive after the end of hostilities, then when crossing state border he passed through a filtration camp. A filtration case was started against such servicemen. In this case, you can find the main biographical information about the person, the documents that the Germans brought on him, sometimes photographs, fingerprints, where he was in captivity. These cases were sent to the archives of the FSB at the place of birth of a person in the second half of the 40s - early 50s of the 20th century.

Nowadays, filtration cases are mainly stored in the archives of the FSB. In the Penza region, I found such a case in the regional archive (GAPO), in the Sverdlovsk region - in the GAAOSO. The director of the archive of the Penza region told me that once they were looking for a long time for the filtration case of one person who was born on Far East, a small child moved to another area, and then moved again. The filtration case was discovered in the Far East. I also had a case when it was thanks to the information in the filtration case that it was possible to establish the exact place of birth of one person.

Information about the service during the Great Patriotic War is stored in TsAMO.

On the algorithm for searching for information about missing persons and dead soldiers in the public organization "Association of search teams" Return "is written in the following article.

    Korneva O.V., Suetina E.N.

Archival experience to find the fate of servicemen during the Great Patriotic War
The work of specialists of the Association "Return" in the TsAMO archive began in 1992 with the development of medallions. According to the data from the read medallions, the soldier’s belonging to a military unit was established, fighting, irretrievable losses of this part and the address of relatives. At the address of relatives, taken from the card file of irretrievable losses of privates and sergeants, the place of residence of the family, the presence of a family and living relatives were specified. this moment. Medallions were handed over to families in a solemn atmosphere by employees of the military registration and enlistment offices or guys from search teams.

In 1994, newspaper publications began to appear about the dead, missing, with requests to establish the fate. The Association of Search Teams of Russia on central television passed the lists of found fighters in the program “No one is forgotten, nothing is forgotten ...” (the results of the Memory Watch). After this program, the Association of Search Teams of Russia was inundated with letters from all over the country. ASPO employees in Moscow sorted them by sender's region and sent them to regional offices. So bags of letters of request to search for the burial places of the dead and missing came to us in the Sverdlovsk Association of search teams "Return".

We started working with applications with research in the military registration and enlistment offices at the place of conscription of a serviceman. After that, all the data was entered into a computer and lists were prepared for verification against the card file of irretrievable losses of privates and non-commissioned officers of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense. After processing in TsAMO, changes were made to the file cabinets of military commissariats for drafted military personnel. Relatives were informed about the work done, they sent, handed over, handed over information about the place of death of their son, father, grandfather, brother.

Over time, the flow of letters of application to the Sverdlovsk Association increased, the working conditions in the archives changed, as well as the location required documents. With these changes, there is next order work with application letters.

    1. Acceptance of the application.

To start the search, you need to get as much information as possible about the missing soldier from relatives. Therefore, a special application form was developed, which includes several main fields: last name, first name, patronymic, year and place of birth, year and place of conscription, military branch, position, rank, unit number, field mail, fate known to relatives. At the same time, information about the unit number and field mail must be confirmed by copies of surviving letters and documents. Such a confirmation application is necessary, since the data reported from memory by relatives often required viewing a large number of files in the archive and did not give a result.

    2. Entering into the database.

All applications are assigned an incoming number and they are entered into the database. At the moment, the database contains information about more than 5 thousand people who are being searched. The presence of an electronic database makes it possible to avoid repeated work with the same servicemen, because applicants, not realizing that the search often requires a lot of time, without receiving a response in a month, write again.

    3. Checking the Books of Memory.

If possible, all applications are checked against the Books of Memory of the area from which the soldier was called up. Such a check allows you to establish additional information about him, as well as find out if he is immortalized.

    4. Checking on the Joint Database "Memorial".

Literally a year ago, a unique project appeared on the Internet, thanks to which the search for military personnel was greatly simplified and accelerated. By accessing the Internet at the link www.obd-memorial.ru, you can find out what the wanted person is listed in the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense. For a successful search in this database, you must keep in mind the following:

    - this project is under development, therefore it is periodically updated, and the information contained there is incomplete. Those. it happens that once you type a person, you can not find him, but after a while, he appears there.

    - Dial the last name, first name and patronymic should be very careful. If there is an option for another reading of the desired surname, then you must also try it, because. documents during the Great Patriotic War were mainly filled out by ear and by hand, and this allows you to write and read in different ways. So, for example, the surname Kardapoltsev could be written as Kargapoltsev.

    - it should be borne in mind that in our big country there were many namesakes, namesakes, and countrymen. Therefore, it is better to check as much additional information as possible: year of birth, place, names of relatives and their address. In my practice, there was a case when everything coincided: last name, first name, patronymic, year and place of birth, conscription, only the patronymics of wives differed.

    - You need to pay special attention to the information from the military registration and enlistment offices. As a rule, this information includes only the last name, first name and patronymic, sometimes even the year of birth. This is not always enough to identify the person you are looking for.

    - sometimes the right person goes through the database without a name or without a patronymic, only a surname, or a surname with a first name, or a surname with initials.

    - when finding right person you need to print two sheets. The first one shows the full name and other data typed on the computer, as well as the fund, inventory, case from which the information was taken. On the second sheet there is directly a scan of the document, where the soldier is mentioned. There can be several documents per person. Everything must be printed.

    5. Analysis of the collected information.

If the database indicates the place of burial of a serviceman in the documents of TsAMO and the military registration and enlistment office, then we can say that the search is completed, it remains to provide this information to relatives. But this rarely happens. There is an option that only the time and place of death are indicated. Then such applications are postponed in order to make a request to the military registration and enlistment office. These two options refer to the small number of successful finds when the wording “died” is in the file.

A completely different situation is when the documents say "missing." If we manage to find the exact time and place of loss in the documents of the unit in the base, then we try to find information about the military operations of the unit on the specified day. Due to the lack of a clearly developed law on the procedure for perpetuating the memory of soldiers, writing to the military registration and enlistment office of the area where the person went missing makes little sense. Only a few military registration and enlistment offices responded to our requests to perpetuate the missing person. It is possible to establish the approximate area of the death of military personnel if the number of the unit in which he served is known. The search for most applications ends with finding information in the archive that their relative went missing at about such and such a time. Searching for any information about a person without knowing the military unit number yields almost no results.

    6. Work in the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense.

Primary processing according to TsAMO documents consists in checking against file cabinets.

The main file cabinets of TsAMO:

Card file of irretrievable losses of privates and sergeants (9th department).

Card file of irretrievable losses of officers (11 department).

Card file of the political staff (6th department).

    Award card index (11 department).

From the established additional data (incoming report number, military unit number, hospital number, etc.), a selection is made and incoming reports are taken, where you can additionally set the number of a military unit, field postal station or field mail. According to the established military unit, they take the documents of this unit: military operations and operational reports, books of accounting for irretrievable losses of personnel of the unit. According to the number of the hospital, his further fate is determined: he died of wounds, where he was buried or was being treated and left for the active army.

The speed of establishing the fate of a fighter depends on the documentation for this fighter. All archival documents of almost all units and formations of the army are collected in one place. But there are a lot of documents and they have not been completely sorted out, file cabinets have not been computerized, many documents have not been declassified. There is manual labor in the entire archive, all materials are on paper, which greatly slows down and makes work difficult. At the expiration of the secrecy period, the documents are declassified and have to be checked again. Often there is a discrepancy between military rank and position. We have to additionally check the fighters according to the file cabinets of officers, political officers, and the award department.

TsAMO is not the only archive that stores documents from the war period.

Information about the service in the ranks of the Red Army from 1918 to 1940 (including civil war in Russia, the liquidation of the Basmachism, the events on the Chinese Eastern Railway (1929), the fighting in the area of Lake Khasan (1938) and the Khalkhin-Gol River (1939), the campaign of the Red Army in Western Belarus, Western Ukraine and the Baltic states (1939 - 1940), the Soviet-Finnish war (1939 - 1940)) are stored in the documentary materials of the Russian State Military Archive (RGVA) - 125212, Moscow, st. 8. Perpetuation of the memory of the dead and missing servicemen.

When establishing the exact place of death of a soldier, we send a request to the military registration and enlistment office of the district or region in which the soldier died, asking if he is listed with them, and we also write that if he is not listed, then we ask him to be immortalized. Be sure to attach copies of documents from which it is clear where we got the idea that the fighter died in their area. Typically, military registration and enlistment offices respond to such letters within a month or two. They report exactly where the serviceman is buried. If they don't have such a fighter, then on the basis of the documents sent by us, they perpetuate him and write to us about it.

In Belarus, under the Ministry of Defense, the Directorate for Perpetuating the Memory of the Soldiers of the Great Patriotic War has been created. An electronic database of the dead and buried on the territory of Belarus has been created here. Email address [email protected]. Phones: 266-61-04; 266-75-15; 286-80-34, the Office is located in Minsk. You can find the codes in your help desk.

If a serviceman was buried on the territory that now belongs to the "far abroad", then to clarify his place of burial, we contact the Military Memorial Center of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation at the address: 119160, Moscow, Znamenka 19, be sure to attach copies of the available documents about the place of death of the soldier. This Center compares our data with the file cabinets they have, write a request to another country. Therefore, the answer from them may come in a year or two. To the answer, as a rule, if the burial is confirmed, documents are attached that allow you to get a visa for free to visit the grave.

    9. Reply to relatives.

We collect all the information we find together, compose a response to relatives, attach answers from the archive and data from the Internet. The very process of comprehending the collected information and compiling a response takes time, so there is usually a significant time gap between the answers from the archives and the communication of the result to relatives. If there is interesting information about the fate of a serviceman, then the results of our work can be presented at solemn events. Also, all answers are published on the website www.okorneva.ru in the “Restored Fates” section.

I will add to this article that thanks to the www.obd-memorial.ru project, it became possible for the genealogist to find the year or place of birth of his ancestors, about which he had very vague information. Also, by typing the last name and search region in the database, you can find information about dead relatives, already forgotten even in family legends. If you find information about the brothers of your direct relative in the database, you can determine his place of birth (which living relatives may not remember or not know when questioned), and thus move further in research into the past of their ancestors.

  • With the help of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, an electronic bank "The feat of the people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945" was created. which is located at podvignaroda.mil.ru, where you can find information about the exploits and awards of your fathers, grandfathers and grandmothers by name and surname. The search is based on military archival documents that have been digitized and entered into the site database.

    How and where to look?

The site “The Feat of the People” is the most complete and up-to-date database on the participants of the Great Patriotic War - there is information about almost all the soldiers. At the first stage of digitization from 2010 to 2015, 30 million entries were made for awarding orders and medals "For Courage" and "For Military Merit", as well as information on 22 million Orders of the Patriotic War of I and II degrees for the 40th anniversary of the Victory, and also 200 thousand archival files with a total volume of 100 million sheets!

Such a huge amount of work has been done for the main goal of the project:

The main goals of the project are to perpetuate the memory of all the heroes of the Victory, regardless of the rank, the scale of the feat, the status of the award, the military-patriotic education of young people on the example of the military exploits of their fathers, as well as creation of a factual basis to counter attempts to falsify the history of the War.

There are 3 main search options:

    1. Search for people and their awards
    2. Search for decrees and orders for awards
    3. Finding data by place and time

To find a person, use the first search option, to do this, open the website http://podvignaroda.mil.ru/ and go to the "People and Awards" tab and enter the last name and first name of the person whose awards you want to find.

To search for decrees and data on the place of hostilities, we recommend using another site - "Memory of the People", which will be discussed below.

If you want to search by the number of the award, then this will not work, because award numbers are not indicated in the award documents.

If information about the fate of a person is not known, then the site "Feat of the People" will not suit you, because. it does not contain data on the dead or missing. Such information should be searched on the website www.obd-memorial.ru, trying different spellings of surnames and first names. wartime documents could contain errors in full name or date of birth.

Recall that the initiator of this project is the Department for the Development of Information and Telecommunication Technologies of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, and technical support carried out by ELAR. Thank you for this site!

Information is taken from two funds: the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (CA MO) and the Central Naval Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation (TsVMA).

    Memory of the people

Later, a more modern site was opened https://pamyat-naroda.ru/ "Memory of the People" with documents from the Second World War, which has a more pleasant design and, most importantly, more information, maps and historical data.

With the help of the “Memory of the People” portal, it has become even easier to restore the military path of your grandfather, to find documents about injuries and awards.

The Memory of the People project was implemented in accordance with the decision of the Russian Organizing Committee Victory of July 2013, supported by the order of the President and the Decree of the Government of Russia in 2014. The project provides for the publication on the Internet of archival documents and documents on the losses and awards of soldiers and officers of the First World War, the development of the projects previously implemented by the Russian Ministry of Defense on the Second World War OBD Memorial and the Feat of the People into one project - the Memory of the People.

On the page https://pamyat-naroda.ru/ops/ you can see plans for 226 operations with detailed diagrams on the map. Each page about the operation contains the names of the commanders and numbers of military units, as well as a description of the result of the operation.

Figure 1 - Modern map of military operations during the Second World War.

On the page https://pamyat-naroda.ru/memorial/ you can find military graves in your city. Just enter the name of the city and click the "Find" button. In total, information is contained on 30,588 burials around the world, except for the United States.

Figure 2 - Military graves with names and surnames.

The burial page contains information about its condition (good, bad, excellent), type of burial, number of graves, number of known and unknown buried. Also on the page is a list of those buried with names and dates of birth and death.

Almost every family in our country has relatives who went missing during the Great Patriotic War. Some scattered information is stored in the family, someone has preserved photographs. But when you see the name of a loved one in the report of the Memorial base, for example, for some reason you more clearly imagine a train under fire, trenches ... And it seems that if you find out at least something else, your soldier will not be so lonely in his unknown grave. And you hope that the soldiers who did not return will not be left without prayers.

About where and how to look for information about the burial place of a soldier of the Great Patriotic War, "Foma" told Dmitry Alexandrovich Belov, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Director of the Research Center for Regional History of the Volgograd state academy postgraduate education, Vice-President of the International Charitable Foundation "Battle of Stalingrad".

    Step 1. Where to start

The fastest way to find your relative who died in the Great Patriotic War is the Memorial generalized data bank, the base of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense (TsAMO):

    For this:

At this stage of the search, the last name, first name, patronymic, year of birth, preferably the title, is enough to start. If he is Ivanov Ivan Ivanovich, then, of course, it will be more difficult. It is necessary to show perseverance to make sure that this is exactly the person who is needed, details will be needed - the name of the wife, mother, the name of the village, the city from where he was called up, the place of birth (in accordance with the administrative-territorial division of the USSR in the pre-war years - approx. ed.).

Worth paying Special attention to the fourth point. There are indeed silly spelling errors in the database. My great-grandfather's name was Andrei Kirillovich. I wrote "Kirillovich" as normal person with two l, and then I thought that not everyone knows how Kirillovich is spelled ...

Kirillovich scored with one "l" and immediately found a burial place. Also Filippovich - maybe Felippovich, and with one "p", and so on. It is also better to try to change the letters in both the surname and the first name in case they were written by an illiterate person or the original document is poorly readable. Such moments must be taken into account.

Ideally, the result of your search should be a document on the place of burial of a relative and information in which military unit(army, division or regiment) he fought.

If there is no information, one can hope that the search teams that are looking for and burying the remains of soldiers will find something. If the search engines managed to find someone, they turn to the military registration and enlistment office, looking for relatives themselves.

But you can continue to search on your own. In this case, you need to collect as much as possible possible number information to get started new stage search.

What can help us with this?

    Step 2. Gather additional information

    Have the letters survived?

The most important thing in letters is the number of the field postal station (FPS) on the stamp of the envelope. It can be used to set the number of a division, regiment, etc.

A powerful resource: a lot of documents on military topics, memoirs, collections. If the division number, the battle area is known, then at least in in general terms find description.

    Database "Feat of the People"

    TsAMO project.

This is a database where there is information about soldiers awarded medals. The database is not yet complete, not all documents have been scanned yet.

This resource has several databases on hospitals. Dial the hospital number, press Enter and see which division he served.

And there are many other reference books on the types of troops, epaulettes, weapons.

But the most valuable thing on the Soldat.ru forum is http://soldat.ru/forum/

If you register on it, you can get advice from completely unfamiliar historians, specialists, anyone who is fond of searching, military enlistment office workers.

To register at the top of this site (see the picture above in the lower right corner), you need to click the "Register" button. Next, you need to fill out the registration form.

Then create a topic (it's better to name it briefly, for example, "No. __-th rifle division. I'm looking for a relative"). After that, your request can be read by everyone who visits this site. Do not doubt! There will be enough such unfamiliar and caring people. Everyone will help you with the information they have. Some will answer, advise, consult, others will recommend sites, scan the documents you need, excerpts from books, etc.

    Other resources

There are many more resources that publish interviews of veterans, biographies. But it should be borne in mind that these sources, as a rule, are of no historical value either for the researcher or for someone who wants to use this material in a search.

To organize in archivessearch for dead and missing in the Second World War 1941-1945 relatives by last name is necessary

    1) Collect as much information as possible about the wanted front-line soldier (last name, time / place of birth; region of conscription into the army; place (s) of service; branch of service; number (s) of the unit (s); any official and unofficial hit notifications captured; field mail numbers from sent letters, etc.)

    2) Apply with all these data to the Internet sites:

    a) a thematic resource of the Ministry of Defense called "United Data Bank "Memorial"" *. Address: www.obd-memorial.ru

    b) electronic bank "Feat of the people in the Second World War 1941-45."

Includes numbers and texts of award orders. Address: http://podvignaroda.mil.ru/?#tab=navHome.

    c) "Memory of the people"

This resource contains information about the locations of military units at all stages of the Second World War. Address: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/.

    d) "Immortal Regiment"

The sites of the public initiative moypolk.ru and polkrf.ru allow you to search for front-line soldiers in their own database, publications in the media, order numbers, archival documents, stories of WWII participants, etc.

    3) Send requests to search for a missing person in the Second World War to unofficial archives and databases collected by public figures (you can find the names of those using Yandex and any other search engine).

    4) Contact specialized archives (the capital's State Military Archive and / or similar archives of the former Soviet republics; archives of law enforcement agencies, etc.). When visiting a selected archive in person, you may need to make a statement indicating your personal data, the purpose of collecting information and an approximate list of requested documents.

    5) Send a request for the search for the dead and missing in the Second World War of 1941-1945 to the archives of Germany and the countries in whose territory hostilities were fought. The main building of the German Federal Archives is based in Kobletz, and the largest branches are in Freiburg, Berlin and other cities.

    6) Contact the local archives of German cities and lands (Dresden Documentation Center under the organization "Saxon Memorials", etc.)

    7) If there is information about the approximate place of death of the wanted relative, contact local military-patriotic detachments, a list of which is available on the Sporf.ru resource (subsection "Region. Representatives").

Algorithm for finding a missing relative

The more data is known about the front-line soldier, the easier it is. Ideally, in addition to the full name of the person you are looking for, it is desirable to have information about the place of his birth, the date and place of conscription, the number of the military unit, etc. As a result of the analysis of documents provided by online resources, one can track the life path of an ancestor. For example, information from award documents will allow you to find out about the feats committed by a relative, the address of the family during the Second World War, etc.

    "Missing"

Such a wording in the search results should in no case be the basis for terminating the search. According to the documents about the places of service, you can "calculate" the fellow soldiers of the hero and learn from them the details of the fatal battle. There are cases when fighters who lost their memory "surfaced" under other names. The main thing is not to stop searching, using any, even the most insignificant, "hooks".

It would not be superfluous to establish contacts with representatives of search parties (personal items and remains found by them often allow shedding light on events of interest).

It is important to remember that the fighters who were taken prisoner were recorded among the missing. To search in this direction, it is advisable to contact the Russian Ministry of Defense and the German Documentation Center located in Dresden, where data are collected on citizens of the Soviet Union captured by the Nazis.

How to act in case of failure

Consult with like-minded people and people who have been searching for a long time. From them you can find out the addresses of thematic forums and social networks (some sites are entirely devoted to discussing the front-line life of specific units and formations). On the forum site "All-Russian genealogical tree» contains links to a great many references and archives, application forms to various departments, search recommendations, etc.

    OBD "Memorial"

    * The generalized computer data bank "Memorial" is an information archive created by presidential order No. pr-698 dated April 23, 2003 with information about the defenders of the Motherland, the fallen and missing during the Second World War (1941-1945) and the post-war period.

The mission of the OBD "Memorial" project is to provide citizens with the opportunity to establish the fate and places of burial / captivity / loss of their relatives.

The formation and content of the site www.obd-memorial.ru is carried out by the specialists of the corporation "ELAR".

Information about the soldiers of the Red Army and partisan detachments gathered by employees of the Logistics Service

    • - departmental archives (Navy, Air Force, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Internal Affairs, KGB/FSB);
    • - branches of the Russian State Military Archive;
    • - branches of the State Archives of the Russian Federation;
    • - specialized departments of the Ministry of Defense;
    • - open sources (newspaper publications; data of postal correspondence; reports of irretrievable losses; documentation of medical battalions and hospitals; trophy cards of prisoners of war; burial passports, etc.).

The result of this interaction was the creation of a global (and regularly updated) information and reference system with more than 13.4 million digitized pages of archival documents and 42,000 burial passports. OBD "Memorial" - the largest electronic archive missing World War II soldiers war in the world.

On Obd-memorial.ru, millions of scanned copies of primary documentary sources with information about personalities are available for study. Portal visitors can search for the necessary information about veterans online. Access to the portal is open 24 hours a day.

The search for the missing participants in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 can be done on sites (addresses are indicated above), which have solid databases with the names of fallen soldiers found by search teams. To submit a request, you will need to enter your full name and, if possible, additional information about the wanted person (his age, rank, military awards, etc.). The databases on these portals are constantly updated, so a negative result of the first attempt may turn into a positive one after some time.

An alternative to these sites can be an appeal to regional military-patriotic clubs, the coordinates of which can be found on the Web. The search engines will add a photo of the missing relative with the personal data of the deceased to a common database, after which the same enthusiasts across the country will connect to the search for a fighter.

And finally, you can write (call) to the program "Wait for me", the organizers of which are looking for missing soldiers all over the planet. To get into the database of the project, you will need to fill out a questionnaire on the portal "Poisk.vid.ru". The more information about a missing relative is known, the higher the likelihood of establishing information about him. Search activities begin immediately after the receipt of the questionnaire. According to statistics, Wait for Me employees search weekly for information about several dozen people, about a third of whom are ordinary soldiers, officers and partisans who did not return from the war.

Attention! Due to the large number of incoming applications, processing of new requests is temporarily suspended. You can search on your own in the databases "Memorial" (obd-memorial.ru), "Feat of the people" (podvignaroda.ru) and "Memory of the people" (pamyat-naroda.ru) - the search for them is absolutely free.
