Do-it-yourself window platbands are wooden, carved - types and methods of manufacture. Stencils for platbands on windows. How to make carved platbands? Three-dimensionally drawn trim on the door

Platbands are called overhead strips framing the window. They have an important function - they hide the gap between the window frame and the wall of the house, thereby protecting the home from drafts, heat loss and moisture ingress. They often serve as an unusual decoration of the house, and in ancient times they were even a talisman against unclean forces.

Carved platbands for windows were popular in our country before the arrival of the Bolsheviks, who considered home decorations to be superfluous. Now the popularity of decorated platbands on the windows has begun to increase again.

Types of platbands

There are many types of platbands that differ in design, material and installation method. By type of installation, they are divided into overhead and telescopic platbands.

Overheads are fastened directly to the window frame with synthetic glue, special spikes, using nails, and telescopic ones are fixed in the space between the window frame and the wall.

materials

For the manufacture of platbands, materials such as wood, plastic and MDF are used.

Wooden platbands on the windows are very practical and will easily fit into any interior. Natural wood lends itself well to processing and a carved pattern will look great on it.

Plastic architraves are practical, convenient and can repeat the texture of wood. They are very budgetary, do not require such careful maintenance as wooden trim, but they also do not look as impressive. Their advantage is resistance to changes in temperature and humidity, which saves them from deformation and increases their service life. The downside will be the scarcity of the choice of color, shape and texture of the platbands.

MDF (medium density fibreboard) trims combine the environmental friendliness of wood and the strength of plastic thanks to a special water-repellent impregnation. Unfortunately, the disadvantage of MDF is the low strength of the material compared to plastic and wood.

There are also metal platbands for sale, but they have a purely functional value and have no artistic value.

Wooden platbands will look harmoniously on the windows of wooden houses, metal ones go well with plastic and metal-plastic front panels, plastic ones will fit under plastic siding, and MDF products are more often used inside the house.

The advantage of using platbands on the windows in the house is the ability to visually expand the window openings and increase the height of the building. When choosing the same ornament of platbands, you can create a complete architectural ensemble on your site.

Making platbands with your own hands

To get a high-quality result of work, it is necessary to choose the right wood from which the platband will be made. For this purpose, a bar made of pine, oak, birch, linden, walnut or alder is used. The wood of fruit trees is also used.

For the first experience in making a trim with a carved pattern, linden, aspen and alder are best suited - they belong to soft-leaved tree species, so even inexperienced people can easily carve a pattern on them. Proper processing of the casing is important - this wood is very hygroscopic and is subject to rapid decay.

A more suitable choice would be hardwood or softwood. Birch and pine have a sufficient margin of safety, while they lend themselves well to processing.

Architraves made of oak and ash (hardwoods) are very difficult for beginners to process due to their increased hardness. They are very reliable and durable, but it is better to entrust the manufacture of platbands from these types of wood to professionals.

Fruit species are well suited for making small details of the casing.

bar

To choose the right timber, you will be helped by a few tips:

  • Do not buy a bar with a blue or black tint - this indicates the presence of a fungus in the wood
  • Do not buy a third grade tree, the savings will be insignificant, but the quality will be noticeably lower, which will affect the durability of the final product
  • Do not take a curved beam - it is very difficult to straighten it.

Usually the thickness of the casing is 20-35 mm. Try to pick up the timber immediately you need the thickness, so as not to waste a lot of time on cutting and processing

The standard timber length is 220 cm, so buy a tree with a margin - you will have a lot of trimmings that are better not to use - the components of the casing will only spoil its appearance and functionality.

Dimensions

The width of the platbands on the windows ranges from 100 to 250 mm. To cut a workpiece of the desired width, nail a bar of different thickness around the perimeter of the window and see from afar which thickness will look more harmonious.

Please note that the trim should go on the frame by 5-10 mm and its upper part can significantly exceed the width of the side and lower parts.

So that your product does not interfere with opening windows, during installation, an indent from the hinges of about 10-20 cm is required, take this into account when measuring.

Thread

To make a pattern on the workpiece yourself, you will need a set of chisels for woodcarving, saws and many other tools. Their set depends on the complexity and type of pattern you choose. At the moment, the appearance of modern power tools greatly facilitates the work.

The most commonly used threading techniques are:

  • Through type of processing. In this case, the pattern is sawn through or cut through the tree. These patterns are made using a file and a jigsaw. This technique helps to create an openwork, lace-like product.
  • The flat-bladed type is characterized by the creation of a pattern that will be lower than the main background in its level. When choosing such a technique, you will need a knife, semicircular chisels and cutters.
  • Relief type. The elements in it are somewhat raised above the rest of the background. To create it, you need the presence of chisels of various shapes.

patterns

To create an interesting design of platbands, you should look for photos of platbands on windows on the Internet. This will allow you to decide on the color, texture and pattern of the intended product.

Now it is easy to find window trim stencils in the public domain. You should not choose complex patterns for the first woodcarving experience. It is important that the same pattern should be depicted on all products.

After you find the wood and stencil that suits you, print the desired pattern in full size and place it on the workpiece, attaching it with buttons.

When placing the stencil, make sure that the thread will go along the grain of the wood, not across. Transfer the pattern to the workpiece and you can start carving. Do not rush, this can ruin the workpiece.

Be sure to carefully sand the resulting pattern, and then remove wood chips and dust from hard-to-reach places with a vacuum cleaner.

Installation

You can attach decorative trim to a wooden frame with self-tapping screws, nails without hats and special spikes. For plastic frames, only liquid nails are used.

Care

As for plastic, metal and MDF platbands, they are unpretentious in their care. Just occasionally repaint them and protect them from corrosion.

Photo of platbands on windows

The ancient tradition of making and installing carved architraves on windows in a wooden house was remembered relatively recently, when the first boom in the construction of log cabins from logs and timber passed. After living in a new wooden house for several years, the owners almost always begin to treat it as a living creature, so it is not surprising that amazingly beautiful carved patterns began to appear on the windows and front doors made of wood, serving both as decoration and protection.

Functions and purpose of carved platbands

Most experts involved in the culture and history of wooden architectural monuments note that carved architraves on windows, photos, are almost a status item. A house without carved patterns looks like a wooden hut, even if it is very large and beautifully decorated, with platbands - it turns into a tower.

Traditionally, carved platbands on windows are installed for two purposes:

  • Protection of cracks along the perimeter of the window frame from the penetration of rain, snow and wind blowing;
  • Additions and decorations of the window opening, the facade of a wooden house as a whole.

For a wooden house, builders traditionally offer wooden window frames or metal-plastic window profiles complete with double-glazed windows. Ordinary PVC plastic architraves can also be ordered in a carved version. It’s just that you most likely won’t be able to choose a drawing or a pattern; carved plastic window trims are made according to traditional patterns by stamping and only give a handmade look.

Advice! Today, many restoration workshops and firms have at their disposal three-coordinate milling machines that can automatically cut out a pattern of any complexity from polycarbonate, foam and epoxy plastics.

Such work will be expensive, but the quality of carved platbands for plastic windows will be even higher than manual cutting. It remains to choose a pattern and a pattern.

Rarely any of the owners of the house can tell more or less clearly and reliably about the third task of the window trim. We are talking about protective functions that protect a wooden house from the "evil eye", diseases and uninvited guests. You can relate to beliefs and traditions in different ways, but taking into account the specifics of choosing a pattern for platbands in your home will obviously not be superfluous.

Patterns and figures on carved wooden architraves

It is clear that any self-respecting owner will not hang the first platbands on the windows of a wooden house, the process of selecting a theme and pattern can be delayed, so do not abuse the use of symbols whose meaning is incomprehensible or unknown. If the mystical and culturological part of the carved architraves creates psychological discomfort, carving can be regarded as a way of decorating the window openings of a wooden house.

It was no coincidence that they were invented to decorate carved architraves, and they were carefully stored and transferred almost unchanged. Most master wood carvers cut just like copiers, so you will have to plan and decipher the drawing on your own.

Advice! In any case, before using carved wooden architraves on windows with patterns and pictures of incomprehensible content, it makes sense to try to understand the meanings of carving elements, patterns and figures.

For example, figurines and images of animals have always symbolized positive wishes for the house of prosperity and well-being:

  • The snake or dragon has always meant wisdom and strength to protect the home;
  • Birds in flight mean cordiality and friendliness, sitting in the corners - attention to guests and news;
  • Fish, deer, bunches of wheat and grapes mean a wish for prosperity.

It was not customary to depict pets and figures of people, especially in the same canvas with climbing plants and flowers.

More modern designs on carved wooden architraves usually have a traditional regular ornament.

It can be intertwined flowers, vine leaves arranged in a regular pattern. In the carved compositions of the 18th-19th centuries, more modern images of columns, porticos and drops, used in the wooden architecture of that era, already appeared.

Most of the carved architraves are ordered from master carvers. If desired, it is not difficult to make carved platbands for windows with your own hands according to templates or ready-made schemes. The simplest lines and drawings can be transferred to a blank and cut out with an engraving nozzle, with more complex patterns you will have to tinker and remember drawing lessons at school.

The upper part of the architraves was called an ochelie, this is the most complex and beautiful part of the decor, on the one hand, the ochelie set the general tone of the carved composition, on the other hand, it served as a visor over the window opening. At the top of the composition was a diadem, symbolizing the rising sun, and in the center a medallion or a crown of plants was always depicted. The lower part of the window was covered with a carved apron, usually in the form of an open fan.

If the mystical and culturological part of the carved architraves creates psychological discomfort, carving can be treated simply as a way of decorating the window openings of a wooden house.

The usual intertwined pattern of vines or flowers will be far from any mystical content, while the beauty of the platbands and carvings of the window frame of a wooden house will only intensify. Carved architraves with a regular pattern have a serious advantage over a complex multi-tiered composition:

  • Firstly, the patterns of carved platbands for windows are transferred to a wooden or plastic blank much easier and faster than a pattern with a complex multi-tiered composition;
  • Secondly, even if you cut out an intertwining vine or edging with your own hands and make small flaws, it will be almost impossible to see them in a patterned field, this is how human psychology works.

Therefore, before making carved platbands on the windows, choose a simple pattern for yourself, with a minimum number of individual details. Even the most uncomplicated pattern on the cladding planks can transform the appearance of a window of a wooden house beyond recognition.

Do-it-yourself options for making carved platbands

Woodcarving has always been and remains a rather expensive undertaking, so instead of buying ready-made platbands cut or stamped on furniture equipment, you can try to make decorative strips with simple patterns with your own hands. At home or in a carpentry shop, you can use one of three methods:

  • Transfer the template to the prepared board and cut out the patterns using the engraving kit;
  • Cast patterns under a carved platband made of polyester or epoxy resin, followed by painting or finishing with a wood-like laminate film;
  • Cut out the overlay pattern of the casing with a jigsaw.

Before you try your hand at making carved platbands, you need to choose the right material. For carving and engraving, hardwoods will be required, beech or oak is good, pine or spruce is a little worse, poplar and aspen are not suitable. To cut an overlay pattern, you can use an ordinary floorboard, but the material should not have knots, defects or complex interlacing of fibers.

Templates for cut-out overlay pattern

To make the simplest patterns, you can use the simplest patterns of intertwining plants, flowers, grapes. In fact, this is a flat tracing paper from more complex carved reliefs. This pattern can be used to decorate the vertical side trims of the casing.

To decorate the window frame, you need to look not for regular, but for single patterns, for example, a composition of symmetrically arranged figures or weaves of plant stems.

The same pattern can be translated into a contour line and turned into a flat ornament, which is quite simply cut out of plywood, boards or even MDF boards.

The most complex relief or three-dimensional patterns are made in typesetting. Initially, ordinary wooden architraves are made from planks, individual elements of the cladding are carefully adjusted to the size of the window and assembled into a finished frame.

All other decorative elements are sequentially cut out of wood, cast from a casting polymer or sawn out of an MDF board, after which they are sanded, primed and glued onto the prepared frame.

Making carved platbands with your own hands

Most often, patterns for window decoration are cut out of waterproof OSB boards in the form of overhead decorative elements. Initially, on tracing paper, a piece of graph paper and with the help of the program, the necessary template for the drawing is developed.

Next, you need to make a working template with which you can transfer the pattern to a wooden substrate an unlimited number of times, photo. To do this, the pattern printed on the printer is glued onto a sheet of fiberboard and cut out with a perforated nozzle for a drill or with ordinary metal scissors.

After marking the wooden blank, you can start cutting the casing. The easiest way is to make cuts with an electric jigsaw on a carpentry workbench.

Along the line of the cuts made, it is necessary to carefully chamfer with sandpaper so that during further processing the front surface of the carved pattern does not chip off. If a sufficiently thin plank was chosen as a blank, then the cut-out carved part of the decor can be glued onto a fabric base.

In the same way, small overhead elements are cut out in the form of rhombuses, squares, rings, braids. After sanding, the cut out elements are turned on an electric grinder with a stone for grinding wood. With the help of a circle, you can simply give a rhombus or any other geometric figure the necessary shape, form faces or transitional curvilinear planes.

After gluing the decor, carved platbands are primed with hydrophobic impregnations and subjected to aging. This is done in order to remove the whiteness of freshly polished wood. For this, solutions of salts of iron, copper, chromium are used. As a result, it is possible to match the color and shade of the carved platband to match the wooden window frame. It remains to open the tree with varnish or oil impregnation and install the carved decor on the window.

Conclusion

Very often, instead of making new decorative elements, the owners of wooden houses prefer to buy old carved architraves, preserved in villages, abandoned houses and buildings. Often, the cost of a set of carved architraves for three windows of a building's facade is cheaper than hand-carving one architraves by a modern craftsman. In some cases, real works of art made by hand by craftsmen of the last century are found among the old decor. Such carved platbands are usually subjected to deep restoration and are installed not on the outer parts of the windows, but inside the room.

The platbands on the windows perform not only an aesthetic function, they protect the house from dust and serve as insulation, so their installation is recommended in a wooden house. We will tell you how you can make cashiers and carvings with your own hands.

A bit of history

Charming symbols were used on the platbands

So, the decoration of the platbands is amazing. They depicted symbols with wired properties. Our ancestors attached great importance to them. But, unfortunately, for a long time the art of creating platbands was forgotten. And a lot of useful information is lost. Today, many craftsmen restore this craft with great difficulty.

Manufacturing technologies

As mentioned above, the Russians attached great importance to the magical properties of wood. Moreover, these properties were different for different tree species. Even the place and conditions in which the tree grew were taken into account.

The traditional old way

Therefore, in the old days there were a great many signs. If, for example, a tree grew at a crossroads, then the objects that were made from it will not bring any benefit.

From the drawings of the ornament, one can determine from which province this or that master came. At the same time, the principles of working with wood were different everywhere. Views on wood too, for example, deaf, sculptural, invoice, slotted.

Traditional wood carving methods

Over time there was a mixture of styles. This gave the buildings a special originality and uniqueness. Many examples of ancient carpentry art can be found in museums, and in some places buildings have been preserved that have delighted with the beauty of their architraves for many centuries.

Modern methods

Today, modern craftsmen work not only with wood, but also with synthetic materials. For example, PVC, metal, plywood.

You can't argue with that. Modern technology can work wonders. Many companies offer a wide variety of trim options from a variety of materials.

You can buy budget or expensive. This is a matter of taste and financial possibilities.

But not everyone is happy with this option. Therefore, there are firms working on an individual project with each customer. At the same time, you will be offered a lot of catalogs, sketches, so that you can choose a casing to your taste, color and pattern you like.

When ordering, both the size of the window and the color of the facade of the house will be taken into account, and after that you will only have to admire the beautiful frame of your window.

But the fact is that no machine will transfer the warmth of the human soul to its product. And many people now understand this. Therefore, those who appreciate real carpentry art are happy to turn to carpentry workshops. Of course, the cost of the carpenter's work is quite expensive. Prices for these types of services start at 5000 rubles, but it's worth it.

Thread types

Carved platbands - rich window decoration

From ancient times, four main types of carvings on platbands have come down to us.

  1. Flat thread. When performing this type of thread, lines are cut along the contour of the pattern. As a rule, such a carving is combined with other types, the ornament is diluted with wedge-shaped cuts. There are two options for this type:
    • Geometric. As the name implies, its elements have a characteristic geometric shape. It is performed as follows: with a knife - a jamb at a certain angle to the surface with pressure, an incision is made. The cut is made on the other side. Despite the seeming simplicity, and only a couple of tools are needed to perform such a job, it will not be possible to acquire such a skill right away. This will take two months. Moreover, such work is very responsible, it is very difficult to correct mistakes. contour. To perform this view, the outline is drawn with a notch line. The thickness of the groove may vary depending on the ornament. In order to make this type of carving, you will need the following set of tools: chisels, cutters, the main requirement for them is that sharpening must be done strictly at different angles.
    • Flat carving. This is a somewhat more complex type of carving. The edges of the pattern are processed in a special way, giving the ornament a relief look. In this case, the depth of the pattern becomes the same as the depth of the background. The main elements are plant motifs, animals. Such an ornament is considered one of the most complex. It requires more different tools. Let us dwell on three varieties of this type of thread:
      • With curved lines. When performing this type of work, the contours of the pattern are rounded. On the side of the groove, there is a weaker collapse, it is stronger on the side of the background.
      • With cushion background. When performing this technique, the edge of the notch, which is closest to the pattern, is made rounded, while the background is chosen sloping. The bulge becomes like a pillow, hence the name. You can perform a slight lowering of the surface to be treated.
      • With selected background. The main secret of this technique is the fully selected background, at equal depth around the pattern. The master strives to create the impression that all the details of the pattern are pasted.
  2. Slotted thread. A very openwork is created on the surface of the tree. This is achieved due to the fact that the background is almost completely removed. Such a platband resembles a beautiful, lightest napkin. The workpiece is attached to a wooden or fabric base. In this case, contrasting colors are selected. This type of pattern is considered overhead. We can say that this type of carving is the most difficult, and only a professional can do it. Saw carving can have a very rich set of themes. It can be both simple geometric shapes and elements depicting people or animals.

For this type of equipment, a slitting brace, a mini-hacksaw, a jigsaw are useful. Perhaps a drill with a feather nozzle will come in handy. The finishing of the slots should be the thinnest, so it is done only by hand. To do this, use chisels, cutters, jambs.

The combination of different types of carving allows you to create a real work of art. Due to the high level of skill required, it is rarely tried on in practice. Although individual elements can be used to decorate facades.

How to make wooden carved platbands for windows with your own hands

In order to learn how to make platbands, you have to study for a long time. If you have at least basic skills with a hacksaw and a drill, then you may have a chance to do this job.

Platbands can be made independently

It may not be possible to make a trim with a slotted thread right away, but a simpler one is possible.

Necessary materials

Wood is needed to make a platband. Choose one that is famous for its long service life. However, it should not be too hard. Tree species such as oak or beech are unlikely to be useful. You will have to prepare a small supply and be patient, as the work will be long and painstaking.

The best material for a beginner joiner would be birch or pine. How good are they. The wood itself, of course, is harsh, but the cuts are beautiful and neat. If you plan to add overhead elements to your pattern, then an apple or bird cherry tree is well suited for this.

After you have finished your work, you should impregnate the casing with a special composition. To do this, you can purchase varnishes or impregnations. Stain will help emphasize the beauty of the wood texture. If you make small mistakes, it is not scary that they can be masked with paint, white or sky blue. Ordinary, usually white or sky blue.

Instruments

It depends on what kind of thread you are going to make. Depending on the complexity of the pattern, you will need either only the most necessary, or a complete set of tools.

Choose the degree of difficulty based on your skills and experience in similar work. For example, in order to make the simplest openwork ornament, you do not need the skills of a professional carpenter. And if you connect fantasy, then you can turn any minor flaws into a pattern element.

If you are inexperienced, do not choose patterns that have a lot of small elements and a lot of details. The idea of the drawing should be clear to the viewer, but it will take you a lot of time to create a complex pattern, and you just need angelic patience.

One of the necessary tools for making platbands is a drill

main stage

To work, you will need a drill, drills, preferably several sizes, a jigsaw, manual or electric, sandpaper, drying oil and wood.

  1. At the initial stage, you need to clean the surface with sandpaper, preferably to absolute smoothness. Now blanks are being made for the side connection. This can be done in two ways. If the cut of the end part is made at an angle of 45 º, then this is called "tongue and groove" or "half-tree".
  2. If you do not have much experience, then take a pattern with large elements to begin with. You can apply the contour directly to the tree.
  3. If drawing an ornament is difficult for you, prepare a stencil with which you can transfer the elements of the ornament to the working board.

Work with your soul, the tree is alive, and if it feels your love, then the work will turn out amazing. And if you like this work, then you can perform real miracles of carpentry. Gained experience is always valuable.

Who knows, maybe our wise ancestors were right in protecting their homes by installing carved architraves on the windows.

Finishing windows with platbands is an ancient practice. Woodcarving - at one time, was one of the most sought-after professions, and now it has moved into the category of applied art.

Our ancestors believed that evil spirits could enter the house through window and door openings. Therefore, the platband served not only as a decorative element, but also as a talisman, and each applied ornament and pattern on the carved platband carried a certain message. Moreover, each region had its own traditions.

Do-it-yourself carved wooden window frames

The value of the carved elements on the platbands is interesting

  • Wings emphasize strength.
  • The bird is an element that unites all times.
  • The sun personifies life and energy (usually located on the kokoshnik).
  • The snake symbolizes wisdom and fertility.
  • The cross demonstrates the desire of the owners for harmony between the material and the spiritual.
  • Vegetation shows a sense of unity with nature.
  • Earrings testify to the hospitality of the owners of the house.

Symbols on carved window frames

Wooden architraves are rarely found in cities with high-rise buildings. But in private construction, they are again in demand today, making modern houses more stylish and unique. They emphasize the desire of many to revive traditions in decor.

Today, window casings perform a completely different function and are made not only from wood. Platbands made of metal, plastic (PVC), plywood, laminated MDF are common. As for the latter, MDF or plywood trims are not intended for external window framing, only for interior design of door and window openings.

It should be noted that the correct name for the external decorative window framing is cashing. The platband is installed indoors.

Carved elements of wooden platbands on windows

Advantages

  • decorating window openings. For example, a platband can visually stretch a low house, or expand a narrow one;
  • the opportunity to express your individuality or give the house the style of a certain era or region;
  • emphasize the style of the house and allow you to combine all the buildings on the site into a single architectural ensemble;
  • protection of the gaps between the window and the wall from dust and moisture;
  • reduction of heat loss at the junction of the window frame and the wall;
  • reducing the level of external noise;
  • sometimes they are the only possible design option. For example, platbands on the windows of a wooden house or a log house can only be made of wood. Otherwise, the whole color of such a structure will be lost.

disadvantages

A wooden, especially carved platband has a number of disadvantages, or rather features:

  • dependence on atmospheric influences. Frequent temperature changes, moisture, ultraviolet, all these factors cause damage to the casing;
  • dependence on quality processing. The right choice of species, careful impregnation of wood, timely replacement of parts, and painting, all this can extend the life of the product. Otherwise, the wooden casing will soon become unusable;
  • the complexity of combining with modern plastic windows. Wooden platbands are not always suitable for plastic windows.

Plastic windows with wooden architraves Quite often there are plastic windows framed with wooden trim, as shown in the photo above. A somewhat unfortunate, controversial decision. In such cases, it is necessary to either install wooden double-glazed windows (or windows laminated to look like wood), or paint the casing white.

A more harmonious finish is in the photo below.

Types and types of platbands on windows

The manufacture of platbands for windows depends on the type and method of installing the platband.

Allocate simple platbands for windows - flat and standard. More beautiful, are made on special equipment. The most beautiful platbands on the windows are, of course, carved.

The method of manufacturing and the cost of the platband is affected by the method of their installation:

  • telescopic. To a greater extent, they will change in the frame of doorways. Special L-shaped protrusions of such a casing go into the grooves of the box. Such a connection is more complex, but beautiful;
  • overhead. They are attached to the window frame with nails or special glue.

It is worth noting that the platbands are of a wide variety and are often complemented by shutters.

Types of wooden carved platbands

How to make platbands on windows - the choice of material

1. Type of wood

For the manufacture of the casing, it is better to use such wood as beech, oak, birch, linden, alder, pine, walnut or even fruit trees.

The choice of breed will be influenced by the proposed method of manufacturing the casing.

  • Hardwood architraves (beech, oak, ash) are very reliable, but this material is very hard. To cut a pattern on them, you need to make a lot of effort and spend a lot of time.
  • Platbands from soft-leaved species (linden, alder, aspen). Soft wood material, it is a pleasure to work with it. But they, with improper processing, absorb moisture and quickly become unusable.
  • The best option is hardwood (birch) or coniferous (pine). Hard enough to be used outdoors, they allow accurate cuts.
  • Cherry or apple tree is used to make small decorations that are superimposed on the main pattern.

2. Patterns for platbands on windows - drawings and templates

If decorative carving is supposed, you need to decide on the pattern. Depending on skills, you can choose a light or very complex ornament for platbands. Below are some drawings of carved platbands for windows. Patterns can be copied in whole or in part, bringing something from yourself into the pattern.

It also describes how to make stencils for making templates with your own hands.

It is desirable that all windows are decorated with the same platbands with the same thread. Therefore, when choosing a pattern, keep in mind that it will need to be repeated several times. It shouldn't be too fancy. Especially if you are a beginner. It is better if your pattern contains round holes (they are easy to drill) and large elements. It is worth noting that small elements are not only difficult to manufacture, but also become unusable faster than others. Therefore, they will require periodic replacement.

Another important point is the obligatory presence of a slope at the top of the casing. Otherwise, snow will accumulate on the surface of the tree, which will inevitably lead to its destruction. A slope of several degrees is easy to perform, it will divert water down.

3. Tool

  • hacksaw;
  • knives;
  • chisels of several types (clukarzy, corners, flat, curved, semicircular, caesars);
  • sanding paper;
  • jigsaw;
  • drill;
  • milling machine (if available)

4. Patterns for platbands - stencils and sketches

Carved platbands - sketches To make the pattern the same on all windows, it is recommended to make a sketch or stencil.

Carved platbands - the location of the pattern on the workpiece You need to place the drawing on the workpiece correctly. Elements should be located along the grain of the wood. This will prevent thread cracking.

Sections of the pattern where you need to make cuts can be marked with color.

5. Making carved platbands for windows

There are two ways to do wood carving:

  • cut wood carving. The pattern cuts through the entire casing and, like lace, beautifully and elegantly frames the window opening.

Carved platbands - slotted wood carving

  • overhead wood carving. This method is much simpler in that a thinner workpiece is used for work, which is easier to work with. With the overhead method, individual thread elements are created, which are then folded together on a solid board. Thus, it is possible to ennoble simple platbands on the windows.

Carved platbands - laid on woodcarving

The beauty of openwork window trim lies in the use of contrast. A lighter carved element on a dark background is more common.

Do-it-yourself wooden platbands for windows - instructions

  • measurements are taken from the window;
  • All work is done on dry lumber. The height and width of the board depends on your preferences, but the thickness should be at least 30 mm for a slotted thread and at least 10 mm for an invoice;
  • blanks are cut out;
  • from the inside of the clypeus, to a depth of 1-2 mm. wood is selected. Leave edges on the edges. This approach will provide a tighter fit of the casing to the frame;
  • the pattern applied according to the template is cut out. At the same time, holes can be drilled with drills of different diameters, and cuts can be made with a jigsaw. The insertion point of the jigsaw is indicated by a drilled hole. So the cut will be more beautiful;
  • slots and holes are processed with sanding paper. If there are non-through holes in the pattern, then wood dust must be removed from them. This is done using a vacuum cleaner.

6. Fastening carved elements

Details made with overhead carving are attached to the wide base of the casing on nails. It is desirable that the nails were without hats. A more reliable connection can be achieved by applying glue to the pattern from the wrong side. Masters advise not to use self-tapping screws for the connection, so as not to damage the junction.

7. Installation of trim on windows

It is not enough to create a beautiful product. You also need to know how to install platbands on windows correctly.

Proper installation of platbands on windows is the key to their long-term operation and aesthetic appearance. For fastening, you can use the following methods:

  • deaf thorn. Such spikes are installed in the casing, and holes are drilled in the frame for them. A little glue is applied to the spike and inserted into the groove. This mount is the most difficult, but it protects the installation site from moisture and does not spoil the appearance of the product;
  • through spike. An easier and less reliable way. This system of spikes provides fastening. But, the spike must be installed where it will be least noticeable and additionally protected from moisture.

The listed methods are used if platbands are installed on wooden windows.

In the event that the installation of platbands on plastic windows is required, special glue (liquid nails) is used. This method will not violate the integrity of the frame.

8. Protective treatment of wooden platbands

In order for the carved platband to please you for as long as possible, you need to take care of its processing. To do this, the wood is primed, varnished or painted.

Architraves on windows, despite their simplicity, are of great importance in the decorative design of the facade of the house. They not only create a neat look and add an element of personality to the structure, but also perform the more prosaic task of eliminating the gap between the wall and the window frame. In addition, platbands must withstand the influence of weather factors without losing their qualities.

Window frame function and a bit of history

The platband was first mentioned as an element of the house as early as the 15th century. Now the architraves have somewhat lost their relevance, but their function is still the same, regardless of the material of the building and its decoration. Due to the design features of the windows of high-rise buildings and in cases where glazing is used, their presence is inappropriate.

Platbands appeared many years ago

Simplified, the platband is a wooden frame with a width of 30-40 mm, which frames the window.

The aesthetic function of this detail is important, but the main task is to bridge the gap formed by the window frame and the wall, which increases thermal insulation and prevents the penetration of dust and moisture from the outside atmosphere, as well as reduces the noise level. In some cases, in the presence of shutters, it performs the function of a frame.

Types and types of platbands for windows

Their form may be:

  • curly;
  • flat;
  • rounded;
  • convex.

Flat platbands are characterized by ease of production and low cost. Convex platbands are made using special machines and, in connection with this, the price of products increases significantly. Carved platbands are of great aesthetic value and significant cost.

According to the method of installation, platbands are classified:

  • telescopic. They have special protrusions that go into the corresponding cavities of the box;
  • overhead.

An important factor in choosing the profile of this window element is the slope that is performed at the top of the casing. Its purpose is to remove sediment.

Modern materials and requirements for the elements of houses have determined the trends in the requests of homeowners. The leaders in popularity are carved platbands made of plastic.

Requirements for the material of platbands

In addition to high aesthetic qualities, the casing must meet practical requirements. Its important qualities are the ability to withstand temperature fluctuations and high humidity. In addition, the material must withstand wind loads.

It is important that the material has sufficient strength and is not subject to chipping and cracking. The use of MDF or plywood is out of the question. The properties of these materials are such that they are able to absorb moisture, are prone to cracking, and the paint on them peels off over time. All this is a sign of the fragility of products made from these materials.

In this regard, MDF as a material for platbands can only be used inside the dwelling. The manufacturability of the material determines the simplicity and relatively low cost. In addition, it does not take much time to get ready-made platbands. Such platbands on the facade will require constant care and additional processing.

Our ancestors have been making platbands from wood for many centuries. Oak and beech are the most common types of wood used for this. Pine and birch have found less use for the production of architraves. Wood tends to absorb moisture, therefore, to increase the service life of the product and its appearance, it is necessary to use protective coatings. In addition, over time, the tree tends to darken, so the restoration of the original shade of the material is required.

When using gypsum as a decorative facade element, the problem of interaction of the material with moisture is also encountered. When the water that has penetrated into the gypsum freezes and thaws in the process of temperature fluctuations, such architectural details are destroyed.

Materials are subject to certain requirements.

The use of glass fiber reinforced concrete and polymer concrete makes it possible to avoid the negative effects of temperature and moisture. Their use is limited by a significant mass of products. In some cases, when installing such platbands, the increased loads on the wall are taken into account and make it more powerful.

Polyurethane compares favorably with other trim materials. This is due to the fact that its use does not allow the problems described above, and also its characteristics make it possible to create additional thermal insulation. In addition, its mass is comparable to the weight of wood, which facilitates the installation of these facade parts.

How to make stencils for platbands on windows?

Choice of wood

Wood for the production of platbands can be used in various ways. It can be certain types of it, a combination of rocks by gluing or otherwise connecting.

Simple and shaped stencils for window frames are best made from pine.

The production of carved architraves requires that the material be soft. Linden has this quality. Material requirements are due to the manual processing of wood.

The choice of wood must be made carefully

Climatic conditions associated with high humidity or significant dryness, as well as significant temperature fluctuations during the day, determine the use of wood with a dense and solid structure. These include oak and birch. Their manual processing is difficult, so the use of milling machines is necessary. Such products have a long service life.

Required Tools

Before solving the problem of how to make carved platbands, it is necessary to decide on the tool used for these works. The main tools for this are knives and chisels, various in shape and size.

Tools for the job

For independent production of platbands, devices for manual milling, an electric jigsaw, and a drill are used. A jigsaw is almost indispensable when performing such work, since with its help you can create almost any pattern. In some cases, a home-made device can be used, which includes a step-down transformer and nichrome wire.

In addition, it may be necessary to make a tool for filing corners. To make such a device, it is necessary to fix two hacksaw blades with a fine tooth between three wooden rails. When working with this device, spikes are sawn with one blade, and the eyelets of the product are filed with the other.

How to choose patterns for platband?

Using the slotted carving technique suggests that aspen, alder, linden or softwood are best suited. The thickness of the board should be in the range from 5 to 50 mm. It is necessary that the chosen design of the pattern for the casing should be well distinguished at a distance, and act as a single whole of the architectural ensemble. Therefore, it is not desirable to create an image with a large number of small elements.

Trim options

For a long time at the top of the casing there is a kokoshnik with the image of the Sun. If desired, the top of the casing can be built up using spikes as a connection. Towels - this is the name given to the bottom of the casing. The design must necessarily include the presence of a water-cutting bevel. The bottom plank should be 10mm thicker than the plank at the top of the plank. It is important to observe the unity of the style of both parts.

To avoid the occurrence of cracks in the thread, the parts should be placed along the grain of the wood. As a rule, the endings and openwork bends, which have a small thickness, have significant fragility.

Structural diagrams

The simplest cut can be obtained by drilling a round hole with a drill. That is why it is desirable to make a choice on a pattern with a predominance of round holes. In most cases, the ornament is made up of repeating elements, each of which is made up of holes and cutouts that have a more complex configuration.

Drawings of platbands on windows contain the following elements:

  • bottom bar or profiled belt;
  • vertical slats or frame;
  • top bar.

Part Names

To get a stencil, you need to stretch the pattern along the length. For this purpose, a life-size image is applied to paper. Places suggesting the presence of slots should be highlighted in color. Then, the resulting pattern is glued to the workpiece. Using a drill, drill holes of the appropriate diameter. If it is necessary to work with a jigsaw, small holes are made where necessary.

Production of platbands for windows

platband

The opening direction of the window must be taken into account. In the case when it opens outward, the casing should be installed at a distance of 30 mm from the window sashes. In addition, platbands should not become an obstacle to opening the window frame. Other parameters depend on the geometric dimensions of the windows.

At the initial stage of the production of platbands, it is necessary to plan a dry board, the dimensions of which are within: thickness up to 30 mm and width 75-150 mm. In this case, the width of the platbands should exceed the corresponding size of the window frame by 25-50 mm. For a better fit of the platbands to the wall surface, a groove is selected or a gap of no more than 2 mm is made so that it is at a distance of 10-15 mm from the edge.

When working with a power tool, you should not make excessive efforts, as if helping him. This may lead to its failure. If there are difficulties with cutting wood, you should pay attention to sharpening the blade. Long cuts are recommended to be made with a wide blade.

How to mount carved platbands

The fastening of the details of the platbands is carried out by means of deaf or through spikes. Moreover, it is believed that the use of the first of them is preferable, since there is no need to decorate the places where the connection takes place.

The grooves for the spikes are made by drilling several holes, the depth of which is slightly greater than the spike. The removal of partitions between the holes is done with a drill designed for metal. The entry of the spike should be tight, however, without the use of force.

The spikes are fixed with pins made of solid wood. The use of glue is not recommended. This is due to the fact that adhesives are not able to work for a long time under the influence of an aggressive atmosphere.

Platband installation: features

Installation of platbands is carried out without the use of glue using nails. They are driven in in increments of 400-500 mm so that the hat is recessed into the wood. Most often, platbands are attached tightly to the box. In some cases, an indent of 5-20 mm is made to the side, which depends on the direction of opening of the valves.

Architraves drawing

The window sill at the window opening and the platband are installed closely. This design allows you to install bedside tables that protect the lower part of the platbands.

Upon completion of the installation work, it is imperative to carry out a protective treatment of the platbands. You should also apply paint or varnish, which needs to be updated from time to time.
