How to glue mirror tiles correctly. Mirror tiles on the wall with your own hands. Laying mirror tiles

Tiles with a mirror surface are a new word in decorating walls and ceilings in a house-apartment. Surprisingly, laying a mirror tile with your own hands will not be difficult, provided, of course, that certain recommendations are followed.

In addition to the fact that mirror tiles are an excellent decorative material, their surface is also resistant to various detergents and moisture. Well, thanks to the ability of 95% light reflection, the mirror tiles laid in the bathroom are not only able to visually make it larger, but also lighter.

How to lay mirror tiles will be discussed in this article.

And although mirror tiles are not afraid of moisture and cleaning products, you should still not forget that this is a rather fragile material, which must be handled very carefully. This is due primarily to the small thickness of the mirror tiles, which is almost 2 times less than the thickness of conventional ceramics.

Therefore, the base, before laying a mirror tile on it, must be more carefully prepared than in a number of individual cases:

1. To do this, plaster, glue and wallpaper are removed from it. Sometimes, when the old finishing material does not hold well, you even have to scrape the wall down to concrete or brick, depending on what material it is lined with.

2. The cleaned base is then leveled to the ideal level. If you do not level the surface before laying the mirror tiles on it, then you can forget about the effect created by this decorative material.

3. After all the above procedures, the wall is primed. As a result, the base, before laying a mirror tile on it, should be as even and well primed as possible.

Before laying mirror tiles on the wall, an adhesive composition designed specifically for this purpose is carefully selected. It is important to know that cement-based glue is absolutely not suitable for this.

When choosing an adhesive for mirror tiles, you also need to be careful with various types of sealants, the main component of which is vinegar, since it can destroy the amalgam of the mirror surface.

In this case, the ideal adhesive for mirror tiles is a special compound designed specifically for working with mirrors. They also glue mirror tiles on liquid nails or on neutral types of sealants.

Laying mirror tiles on the wall is carried out in the following steps:

1. First, the surfaces are marked. It is advisable, in order to get a complete picture of how the mirror tiles on the wall will look like in the end, first lay them out on the floor in the desired shape.

2. After marking, the mirror tiles are laid on the wall, and it begins in the traditional format - from the bottom up. When gluing tiles, it is very important not to deviate from the existing markings, continuing to glue the material from the corner, in horizontal rows.

When laying mirror tiles, small gaps should be made to help compensate for the expansion of the material during its operation. This is especially true for rooms where temperature fluctuations are constantly present.

Mirror tiles should be stored in an upright position, this will protect its surface from damage. If you need to cut mirror tiles, the best tool for this purpose is a diamond glass cutter.

Well, about that, read in the next review of the construction magazine.

Luxurious interior without the help of a designer: mirror tiles

But there are no instructions on how to use it on the boxes. The manufacturer is also not listed. Tell me how this tile is glued to the wall or ceiling, and most importantly - how to glue it.

at 23:59 It is best to use a special tile adhesive that is used for mirrors or a neutral, vinegar-free sealant for laying mirror tiles. And do not forget to clean, level and properly prime the wall before laying the tiles.

at 7:38 Cement-based glue definitely cannot be used, it eats up the mirror coating. Liquid nails, especially on the ceiling, are also not suitable - while the composition grabs, the tile can slide or crash under its own weight. Only glue for mirrors, and it is more reliable to attach each tile to the ceiling, by analogy with suspended ceilings. A neutral sealant - for grouting.

at 16:29 As far as I know, a mirror coating is applied to this finishing material on the other side of the glass.
If chemically active cement + water gets on the mirror coating, most likely, the mirror coating will stop "working". Therefore, it is better to use glue, or fix it mechanically.

People I knew in their cafes fixed the mirror tiles with the help of double-sided adhesive tape, which came with this mirror tile.

Mirror tiles with facet (photo): advantages and disadvantages, installation features

Muscovites-finishers came to Siberia to us (they were engaged in the finishing of elite housing), they had a problem, there were not enough pieces of 20 mirror tiles. I made them from a Belgian waterproof mirror, polished the edge. They were satisfied. I put domestic tiles 150 * 150 mm in my bathroom, along the perimeter, interspersed with tiles, placed mirrors 303 * 303 mm in size (size of 4 tiles + seam). The mirror took the usual domestic 5 mm, the edge was simply polished. To protect the amalgam, I covered I glued the mirror tiles on the Garant mastic, sealed the seams with ordinary grout. I changed the apartment two years ago, everything looked in its original form. The new owners liked the bathroom. The mirrors around the perimeter visually expanded the volume. with this topic.

The topic is relevant, but with single orders of 2-10 tiles or the price of an airplane
or no one will handle the edge.
the processing cost is several times higher than the material
Easier to cut the mirror - without processing the edge and stick

About mirror tiles.
Due to the fact that for some time I traded in plumbing (pipe, fittings, etc., etc.), I have acquaintances with finishers, and with individual farmers, and with brigades - and so, both of them, they say, "give samples , or even better, immediately give at least half a meter of glued tiles to show to the client", I note that it did not immediately cause a negative reaction (and our people are simple, they send it at once), they say "you need to try and promote"), actually under this and I sculpt a longitudinal-transverse table.

I completely agree, it takes a lot of time and health to create "fashion". But as a rule, the one who starts, he takes off the "cream".

raddan, Zhenya, it’s trite to apply ico on the amalgam without a hardener, it sticks - don’t worry, mom, but only without a hardener, it can work, at least on chipboard where the glue didn’t fit well, it has eaten in that it can’t be torn off ...

How to glue mirror tiles

The use of mirrored tiles is now widespread, in part because mirrored walls visually expand a space, hide imperfections, create false niches, raise, lower a ceiling, and can also be used to create various elegant effects. Mirror tiles are available both in a simple version and with various patterns or embossed finishes.

A room in which mirror tiles are used looks unusual and creates an impression of depth and radiance, moreover, the gluing process does not take much time and can be done even by a non-professional. First of all, you need to decide what to glue the mirror tiles on. If it is amalgam coated glass, Mirror Sealant will do, which is able to permanently attach the mirror to any surface.

In other cases, other sealants, glass glue or "liquid nails" are used. Glue with a long-term setting should not be used, as in this case it will be necessary to install additional props. Before gluing the mirror tiles, the wall surface is carefully prepared: the old coating, paint are removed and sanded well, if necessary, the wall is leveled, because. the mirror surface must be perfect.

Standard mirror plates are produced with a size of 25 * 25, but if you plan to paste over a large wall, it is advisable to purchase a larger tile, which is sold in any hardware store. Next, you need to make a drawing, which will accurately indicate the position of the tile: here the designer's imagination may be different. Mirror tiles are placed both horizontally and diagonally, or even randomly.

Final preparations: a line is drawn with chalk on the prepared surface and its direction is checked using a plumb line or level.

Mirror panel. How to stick.

How to glue the tiles correctly so that the mirror wall looks even, and the tiles themselves have equal gaps between themselves and do not “run into” each other? The tiles are laid sequentially from the bottom corner of the wall to the top, and the back side of each tile is smeared with glue or “liquid nails”.

It is advisable to check each row with a level so as not to lay the tiles crooked; it is almost impossible to re-glue an already finished wall without damaging the material.

Well, about how to cut glass correctly, read the following review of the construction magazine.

Ways to glue mirror tiles

Mirror tiles have become popular not so long ago. Many designers and finishers immediately understood its capabilities and take it into account when designing a design. How to lay mirror tiles video material for builders. With this material, you can embody those bold ideas that have not worked out before.

How to glue "mirror-tile" in the bathroom (repair)

  • Also do not use acidic (acetic) "universal" sealants. The use of these materials can lead to the destruction of the mirror amalgam.
  • If there are difficulties with leveling the surface, the tiles can be laid on drywall, smooth slate or plastic, which are previously attached to the wall or ceiling.

In rooms with sudden changes in temperature and high humidity, in order to avoid peeling and breaking tiles, it is recommended to lay tiles leaving a thermal seam between the elements.

Ingredients for application. As an adhesive, it is best to use any neutral (without vinegar) sealant. It is possible to use the "Liquid Nails" LN-930 Mirrors composition, but it is inconvenient to work with large volumes, since it seizes for a long time, and the laid tiles can "creep" under their own weight.

The most commonly used sealant is dark gray - it does not create a contrast with the mirror tile itself and has bactericidal and antifungal properties (unlike transparent), which is important for rooms with high humidity.

When laying on a neutral sealant, the seams can be overwritten in a day. Tiles laid on mirror adhesives should preferably be grouted after a couple of days. The use of a neutral sealant has another advantage - the mirror tile is glued and rubbed with the same composition.

Mirror tiling.

1. Calculate the number of tiles in the vertical and horizontal rows.

2. Mark the base on which the mirror tile will be applied.

3. Lay out all the mirror tiles in their entirety on a flat horizontal surface in the way they will be located after the sticker.

4. If you are laying tiles end to end - Due to possible incompatibilities (permissible deviations in dimensions are always present), select a place for each tile so that all tiles in the mirror panel lie tightly to each other.

5. Apply the entire tile to the base.

6. Wipe off any traces of adhesive or sealant from the mirror surface with a non-metallic spatula. Sealant residues are best removed 2-3 hours after application. To remove particularly stubborn stains, you can use Pemoxol or other finely dispersed cleaning agent.

Drilling a hole in a mirror tile is quite difficult. But if you need to display electrical or plumbing wiring on a mirror panel, you can make markings with an ordinary felt-tip pen or marker on glass and contact the organization that produces the drilling and processing of glass or our organization.

For mirror tiles of any format, a 4 mm thick mirror is used. Note that modern ceramic tiles are in any case much thicker (8 mm or more). Therefore, it is best to compensate for the difference in the thickness of ceramic and mirror tiles with the most common cement-sand mortar, applying it with a suitable layer to the section of the wall where it is planned to lay the mirror tiles.

  • During laying, the tiles must be kept in a vertical position, leaning them against any vertical surface. Storing tiles in a stack can scratch the glass on the front of the mirror.

When laying tiles on the ceiling, along with gluing, you can use a standard hanging set from ordinary suspended ceilings.

Buy several tiles more than you plan to use: - transport or application time one or two tiles can be damaged; - it is better to leave a couple of tiles in case of repair.

This instruction was compiled with the help of Sergey Aleksandrovich Spesivtsev. City of St. Petersburg.

For laying mirror tiles with your own hands, first of all, decide on the choice of material.

There are two main options:

  1. the basis is polystyrene foam. Paint with metal particles is applied to it, which gives a mirror surface. They are light and cheap. Extremely easy to assemble - put on glue. However, a smooth mirror surface cannot be achieved with the help of them - they give distortions. In general, the appearance is quite average.
  1. the base is glass. The mirror layer is formed by algam, metal spraying, foil, etc. applied to the back side. The quality depends on the strength and properties of this layer, as well as the quality of the glass, which together determine the cost. They require careful preparation of the base, careful attitude (the main enemies are chips and darkening of the algam). Resistant, durable.

Let's talk about laying glass tiles in more detail.

Preparing the base for laying

Laying mirror tiles with your own hands is possible on almost any flat, dry, clean surface with sufficient adhesion. The key word is “smooth”, as large differences across the entire surface give a “broken” mirror image and are immediately visible.

The base (walls or ceiling) must be cleaned, treated with an antiseptic and a deep penetration primer, leveled with base plaster, then puttied and polished (irregularities up to 2 mm), dedusted, primed.

If leveling is not possible, the base is sewn up with a sheet of drywall or asbestos. Measure the base area, purchase tiles with a margin (marriage, chips during delivery and installation, errors, as well as a few pieces that will be spare).

While the base dries, sort out the tile itself. Lay it on the floor as it will lie on the surface.

Attention: the dimensions of the tiles, even within the same batch, can vary within 2 mm (more - marriage), so the laying will need to be repeated exactly on the surface.

Tip: the most important thing is the angle at which the eye first of all falls when entering the room and the direction that is closest to the window. They are done with the utmost care.

To lay tiles with your own hands, you will need a glass cutter (diamond is ideal), a drill for glass or metal. You can also work with a tile cutter. The rest of the set of tools is similar to the set for laying conventional ceramic tiles: level, plumb line, ruler, square, notched trowel, rubber or other non-metal trowel, masking tape, double tape.

Choosing an adhesive mixture

It is impossible to glue a mirror on ordinary tile adhesive, because the algama, under the influence of an acidic environment, begins to darken after a while. Therefore, glass mirrors are glued only to chemically neutral bases based on silicone (without acid in the composition), epoxy resin, mastic. If there are concerns that the wall or ceiling will be damp, then the tiles can be glued to the sealant.

The adhesive is applied to the wall according to the size of the tile with a layer of 0.5 - 1 mm thick, and then leveled with a notched trowel. When gluing on liquid nails, which harden slowly, the tile on the back is duplicated with double tape.

Do-it-yourself mirror tile laying

Having ensured reliability, smoothness, good adhesion to the base (for this, a thin layer of cement-sand mixture can be applied to the wall, the back surface of the tile can be coated with a thin layer of mastic and sprinkled with sand), proceed with laying the first row. It must be horizontal.

Make gaps with crosses. The narrower they are, the more difficult it is to join the pattern, however, the more uniform the canvas is visually. Larger gaps (up to 3-4 mm) visually "break" reflections, but this is the only way to lay on a base with irregularities.

Liquid nails dry slowly, so they are not suitable for large areas of one-time laying, but with a more viscous glue, several rows at a time can be laid.

You can grind the cut edges of the tile with fine emery or a bar for sharpening knives.

An alternative to gluing tiles to the ceiling can be:

  • type-setting suspended structure, where each tile lies in its recess, leaving communications available above;
  • you can also put a mirror tile by attaching it to drywall or a wooden crate on screws and closing the holes from them with caps.

Full setting of the adhesive takes 4-5 days.

Grout can be done with sealant or transparent silicone. It is best to seal the seams with masking tape, and then cut grooves in them, into which the sealant will then lie. Remove dirt with a cloth and a non-metallic spatula.

Total: laying a mirror tile with your own hands - requires the skill of working with glass, attentiveness, accuracy. You need a perfectly even base and adhesives that will not damage the mirror layer. Such an element in the interior immediately attracts attention, and therefore the selection of glass (tinted, chamfered), the size of the tile, its placement relative to light sources is also important.

We bring to your attention a small educational film: "Laying mirror tiles on liquid nails and double-sided tape."

Mirror tiles - a new word in interior decoration. It is easy to lay such tiles on your own, and the result will harmoniously complement any interior. This is a decorative material for finishing work. It is resistant to moisture, detergents and cosmetics, so it can be used in the bathroom.

Due to the fact that such a product has a light reflection coefficient of up to 92%, the presence of decorative elements made of this material visually enlarges the space and makes it brighter. It is used for finishing ceilings and as all kinds of panels on the walls. It should not be forgotten that this is a rather delicate material, so there are certain rules on how to lay a mirror tile.

Surface preparation and requirements

Mirror tiles can be applied to any material that has sufficient strength.

  • In order to ensure good adhesion of the tiles to the base, before applying the surface must be dedusted, freed from wallpaper, loose paint, chalk, lime.
  • If necessary, apply anti-efflorescence, fungus, mold, etc. to the wall.
  • Coat the base with primer. To do this, you can use paint or varnish with the addition of an appropriate solvent, or special primers.

The base must be:

  • Smooth and not have bumps, sharp breaks and protrusions (roughness and potholes are allowed in small areas).
  • Smooth - only slight curvature of the base over a large area is allowed.
  • Dry, clean.
  • Well primed.

Attention! Do not use cement-based adhesives (Vetonit, Plitonit and others) to fix mirror tiles.

Also do not use acidic / acetic / "universal" sealants. The use of these materials can lead to the destruction of the mirror amalgam.

In rooms with sudden changes in temperature and high humidity (bathroom and actively used kitchen), it is not recommended to lay mirror tiles end-to-end. Frequent heating and cooling of the tiles can cause the mirror panel to “bulge out” and individual tiles to crack or fall off.

Compositions for application

As an adhesive, it is best to use any neutral sealant. You can use "Liquid Nails" LN-930 Mirrors, but this composition is inconvenient to work with large volumes, because it seizes for a long time.

For grouting, it is recommended to use neutral sealants of any color. The most commonly used dark gray sealant - it does not create a contrast with the mirror tile itself and has bactericidal and antifungal properties, which is important for rooms with high humidity.

When laying on a neutral sealant, the seams can be rubbed after 1-2 days. Tiles laid on Liquid Nails LN-930 Mirrors should preferably be grouted after 4-5 days. The use of a neutral sealant has another advantage - the mirror tile is glued and rubbed with the same composition. Thus, after the completion of work, less waste is generated.

To quickly clean the tiles from sealant residues after grouting, two technologies are recommended to choose from:

  • Before laying the tiles, glue each tile around the perimeter with masking tape;
  • After laying the tiles, stick the masking tape directly on the joint, and then with a knife with replaceable blades, cut through the joint, which will be filled with sealant. These technologies provide maximum accuracy and speed of work.

Laying mirror tiles

Calculate the number of tiles in the vertical and horizontal rows:

  • Mark the base on which the mirror tiles will be applied.
  • Lay out all the mirror tiles in their entirety on a flat horizontal surface in the way they will be located after the sticker.
  • If you are laying tiles end to end - Due to possible incompatibility (tolerances in size are always present), select a place for each tile so that all tiles in the mirror panel lie tightly to each other.
  • Apply the entire tile to the base.
  • Remove the masking tape/wipe any traces of adhesive or sealant from the mirror surface with a non-metallic spatula. Sealant residues are best removed 2-3 hours after application. To remove particularly stubborn stains, you can use Pemoxol or another fine cleaner.

Please note that during laying the tiles must be kept in a vertical position, leaning them against any vertical surface. Storing tiles in a stack can scratch the glass on the front of the mirror.

Buy a few tiles more than you plan to use:

  • The time of transportation or application of one or two tiles can be ruined.
  • It is better to leave a couple of tiles in case of repair.

By following these rules, you can lay mirror tiles yourself, decorating the interior with an exquisite and beautiful decorative element.
