Do-it-yourself installation of roller blinds. Cassette roller blinds for wooden windows Roller blinds for wooden windows installation

Attaching roller blinds to a window or wall is not such a difficult job as it might seem from the outside. If desired, any owner of the apartment can install such structures, while saving a significant amount on the services of professional installers.

To do this, you need a simple set of home building tools and basic skills in working with them. In this article we will try to take a closer look at how to fix roller blinds: methods of fastening in one case or another, a phased installation process, features and nuances of work.

Types of design and options for the location of roller blinds

Roller blinds come in all colors and textures.

Roll-up systems are a modern version of window light-shielding systems that combine the style of vertical blinds with the practicality of classic curtains. More and more people, wishing to update the interior of their home, turn their attention to these convenient and easy-to-use structures.

The rich color range and texture of the material make it possible to use roller blinds with equal success both in residential and office premises. With their help, you can give the interior the necessary direction: in one case, it can be distinguished by grace and a bright play of colors, and in the other, it can be emphasized by a businesslike and strict style.

Design features

All roller blinds are structurally composed of a light-protective fabric and a shaft with controls. The canvas can rise, winding on a shaft, or fall, blocking access to outdoor lighting inside the room.

There are two main types of roll systems:

  1. Open type. In this case, the shaft with a strip of fabric wound around it is not closed by a protective box, but is installed on the end fasteners in an open way.
  2. closed type. In such a system, the shaft is installed in a special box. Firstly, it protects structural elements from external damage and dust, and secondly, it gives the curtains a more presentable look. By choosing the right color of the box, you can organically fit it into the surrounding interior.

Roller blind installation work

Method of fastening curtains in relation to the window

In order to hang fabric roller blinds on windows, you will need the following tools:

  • building level;
  • pencil;
  • tape measure or long ruler;
  • drill or perforator;
  • screwdriver or screwdriver.

Before proceeding with the self-assembly of the structure, you should carefully read the attached assembly instructions.

Also make sure that the product is complete, check that all parts are included.

Mounting methods

There are several ways to install roller blinds, differing in the place of their attachment and the set of fasteners.

You can attach them to the ceiling, the wall above the window, or directly to the window opening or to each individual sash.

In this case, the following mounting options can be used:

  • self-tapping screws;
  • spring brackets;
  • double-sided mounting tape;
  • side rail design.

Mounting with self-tapping screws

In this way, you can mount roller blinds on plastic windows, wooden frames, on a wall or ceiling. First of all, you should assemble the entire structure:

It is best to fix roller blinds with self-tapping screws on wooden windows. If you suddenly decide to change the light-shielding structures for others, the holes in the tree can be easily puttied and painted over.

It will be much more difficult to seal holes drilled with self-tapping screws in metal or plastic frames. For more information on installing roller blinds, see this helpful video:

Installation with double sided tape

Adhesive tape will only withstand light structures

Most often, using double-sided tape, roller blinds are attached to the frames of plastic windows. Thanks to the adhesive tape, the window frame remains intact, and after removing the curtains, no holes remain on it.

Since the adhesive tape has a certain tensile strength, it will be possible to attach light-shielding structures of relatively low weight to it, most often intended for one window sash.

Work on the installation of curtains to the window frame is carried out in the same order as for self-tapping screws. Initially, measurements and marking of the fastener place are made with a pencil and a level, and then the curtain is adjusted to the center of the window.

Before attaching to tape, clean the frame from dust

Adhesive tape on one side is attached to the box or fasteners of the blinds. After that, the protective layer is removed from the outside of the adhesive tape, and the structure is carefully glued to the surface of the frame in the right place.

Instead of tape for roller blinds, you can use building glue or liquid nails. However, it should be borne in mind that the structure will be attached to the frame very firmly, and certain difficulties may arise during its dismantling.

Before attaching the adhesive tape to the frame, it should be cleaned of dust and other contaminants, and, if necessary, degreased with a solvent, gasoline or white spirit.

Mounting on spring brackets

This method is used to fasten roller blinds to opening window sashes. This method is good in that it makes it possible to do without drilling window frames, and also allows, if necessary, to dismantle and reinstall the roll system on the window. See this video for details on attaching roller blinds to windows:

Before installation, you should assemble the curtain structure, and, attaching it to the sash, mark with a pencil the installation locations of the spring brackets. According to the marks, we install the brackets and the shaft attached to them.

We put on the side covers on the brackets, lower and raise the curtain fabric to make sure that the structure is installed correctly and functions normally. We install a stopper on the control chain in the marked place, fixing the canvas in the lower position.

Installing the side rails

Clips for string guides are fixed with self-tapping screws

If the curtain system assumes the presence of side guides in the form of strings, then after mounting the shaft on the window sash or wall, additional elements should be installed.

To do this, take a string, measure it and cut it to the desired length. From the bottom of the frame, on both sides, you will need to install the appropriate clamps for the guide strings. They can be attached using self-tapping screws, double-sided tape or mounting glue. We fasten the string on the edges of the shaft in specially defined places (see instructions). We measure the distance between them and set aside exactly the same size on the bottom of the frame, marking the attachment points of the lower clamps.

After installing them, we pass the string through the holes of the lower bar on the curtains. We attach the lower edge of the string to the lower clamps, so that it is tightly stretched between them and the shaft, forming a guide for the fabric curtain.

As you can see, installing a roller blind of any design is not so difficult. The main thing is to have the skills of owning building tools and desire. In this case, the installation of roller blinds on the windows should not cause you serious difficulties.

Cassette roller blinds for wooden windows, calculation for a product measuring 60x160 cm. An order can be placed according to individual sizes:

  • Valid width range: 25-120cm;
  • Valid Height Range: 30-220cm

The maximum dimensions may be adjusted downwards, depending on the fabric.

Construction and installation of cassette systems

Cassette roller blinds are installed on the window sash in two ways: on self-tapping screws or without drilling on double-sided adhesive tape.

The decorative cassette box is presented in several color options, it can be matched to match the wooden windows. Vertical guide systems securely fix the canvas parallel to the glass, protecting the curtain from vibrations and sagging. Such curtains can be installed on ordinary or roof windows. The system is very convenient in operation and will allow you to freely open the window sash, in addition, the space of the window sill remains open, visually increasing the space of the room.

The cassette hides the circular shaft of the mechanism, on which the cassette curtain is wound and protects the fabric from dust and various contaminants, this will allow you to install the system on balcony windows, where there is always an increased accumulation of dust. The height is adjusted by the chain system, fixing the curtain in any position.

Fabrics for roller blinds

In cassette roller blinds, you can choose a fabric of any color, texture and light transmission. A rich color palette includes bright juicy colors or pastel shades, and the fabrics of the Lux series have an exquisite textural pattern.

Key benefits of materials:

  1. the color of the curtains can be chosen for different interior styles;
  2. the material is treated with a dust-repellent impregnation that protects the canvas from contamination;
  3. the product will not lose its color and shape for a long time;
  4. to keep the canvas clean, it is enough to vacuum it or wipe it with a damp sponge

Cassette roller blinds can be used as an independent decoration of a window opening, or make an interesting and original combination with textile curtains, rope curtains or tulle. The combination of colors and textures will allow you to create a unique interior to your liking.

Roller blinds have become one of the most practical and beautiful ways to decorate wooden and plastic windows of the European standard. In the raised state, they, rolled into a roll, are tightly removed upwards, and in the lowered state, they merge with the window into one whole.

Roller blinds owe their name to their original design - a single piece of fabric, rolled up into a compact roll on an aluminum shaft (rod), using a simple but reliable mechanism. They can be easily lowered or raised to the required level and fixed, thereby adjusting the flow of light. Installation is carried out on the wall, in the upper part of the window or door, on the ceiling or sash, depending on their type.

Popular Options

Classic roller blinds are essentially a metal tube (usually aluminum), on which fabric is wound, fixed on the sides in two plastic brackets. The brackets can be fixed to both the ceiling and the wall. These open, free-hanging systems are controlled by a chain mechanism.

How to install correctly

The installation of mini models differs from the installation of classic ones - in addition to self-tapping screws, high-quality adhesive tape can be used during installation, especially since the weight of the product allows this. That is, Mini systems can be installed without causing damage to the frames. If necessary, they can be removed almost without a trace, since traces of adhesive tape can be easily wiped off with kerosene or acetone.

Uni can be installed both on self-tapping screws, and, plastic or metal, without drilling (for opening sashes). Moreover, Uni curtains are another type of Velcro: you can use special double-sided tape to mount them. Installation, based on the design features of the frame, is carried out either in the light opening, or directly on the sash with a glazing bead depth of less than 6 mm.

Control

  • chain mechanism

With the help of a plastic chain, the fabric of the roller blinds is wound on the shaft or, conversely, unwound.

  • With spring mechanism

The opening and closing of the canvas can be controlled using a cord or ring, which is fixed in its lower part. The position of the web is blocked by an additional locking mechanism that does not allow it to open / close arbitrarily. The locking mechanism can be unlocked with the same ring or cord. In some cases, the curtain can be closed by simply pulling on its lower edge.

  • Electronic control

The shaft with such a control mechanism is driven by an electric motor, which is turned on using the remote control and wall switch. The remote control makes it possible, by combining several curtains into a single system, to control them at the touch of a button. You can optionally install solar sensors and timers.

It should be noted that it is quite strong, and the likelihood of gaps is very small. However, repairs may sometimes be needed.

If there are small gaps, then they could be sewn up, but how aesthetically it will look. In such cases, it would be more correct to completely replace the canvas.

"Help" may also be necessary for the lifting mechanism. For example, a chain break or an electric motor failure - in order to correct the situation, they will either have to be replaced or repaired.

A variety of fabric roller shutters (or roller blinds) today makes even the most sophisticated buyer think. Each manufacturer strives to make its product special, inventing new systems and mounting options. However, many such inventions allow customers to simplify the work during installation and not turn to professionals on such a mundane issue. You can find out how roller blinds are attached, what is needed for this and what features should be taken into account during work, right here and now.

Mounting type

Modern roll structures can be mounted on a wall, ceiling or the window itself. The choice should be based on the features of the interior of the room and the personal preferences of the owner. When choosing roller shutters, you need to correctly assess your capabilities and choose the most suitable mechanism that allows you to quickly and easily open / close the curtain if necessary. It can be a manual chain mechanism or automatic. After that, you need to decide what will be the fastening of the roller blinds.

On walls or ceilings

Until recently, this method of fastening was very popular, so many buyers still prefer such systems today. But even today it is a justified choice if it is necessary to cover large windows, panoramic windows or bay windows. This method of fastening also has its drawbacks: at the moment when the curtain is lowered, it will not be possible to open window systems (even for ventilation).

Before installing roller shutters on walls or ceilings, you need to check the quality of the plaster, because when drilling a hole for fastening, you can get an unpleasant surprise in the form of a collapse. To avoid this, you should conduct a small test in advance (even before buying curtains): take a small hammer and gently tap the entire surface on which the structure is supposed to be fixed. If the sound is inhomogeneous, and in some places deaf, the idea should be abandoned.

For plastic windows

Installing roller blinds on plastic windows without drilling is not only the ability to open any window system with the curtains down, but also getting rid of any holes in the walls and ceiling. To do this, manufacturers made the design as light as possible, reduced the diameter of the tube of the roll mechanism from 25 to 17 mm and provided the system with special hooks.

Preparing for installation

Before hanging roller blinds, you should make sure that the windows on which the products will subsequently be located are well kept in a vertical position. For this, a special device "spirit level" is usually used. It must be applied to the window and check the liquid reading in a small hole. If he "ran away" on one or more windows, you need to install the roller shutter not along the line of the window, but so that the level is perfectly even. Otherwise, the curtain will roll unevenly when opening and closing, which will lead to the formation of holes on the sides (uneven fit of the fabric) and the rapid disabling of the entire system. You can find out how to properly install plastic windows.

Do-it-yourself installation of roll structures

You can install the purchased roller shutters in just a few minutes. How roller blinds are attached to plastic windows is also written in the product manual, but far from all the nuances of work are described there. Moreover, nowhere is it indicated that they can only be installed on plastic window systems, but also on ordinary wooden frames (including painted ones). Many models are specially designed so that they can be installed by all users without exception, including ordinary housewives. But anyway, before installing roller blinds, you need to carefully consider the design, study its main working units and consult the seller before buying (he will help you choose the most affordable option).

Instructions for installing fabric roller shutters on windows

But now the measurements are made, the purchase is made, and it's time to start installation. Carefully unpack the product, minimally damaging the packaging. Make sure the product is complete. Then release the control circuit. Slightly lower the fabric from the control box, which is located on the cornice, and remove the side covers.

How to attach roller blinds to a window with self tapping screws?

  • Attach the brackets to the top of the frame and screw them through the special holes with self-tapping screws (usually they are included).
  • Now you need to insert the latches and gears into the pipe with the fabric web.
  • The pipe itself is installed in a standard bracket, pressing effortlessly until a characteristic click.
  • Decorate the ends of the pipe with special caps.

How to assemble a roller blind using metal or plastic spring brackets?

This method is applicable only for mobile frame doors.

In this case, the hinged plastic spring bracket should be snapped into the standard installation (having previously bent the petals of the hinged bracket) and repeat all the steps typical for installing curtains using self-tapping screws.

Installation roller blinds without drilling with sticky tape

  • The attachment for fastening should be snapped onto the bracket.
  • Next, you need to degrease the sections of the window frame in the places where the product is glued.
  • Heat the adhesive tape with a hair dryer, then remove the protective coating from it and stick it on the surface of the frame, pressing firmly with your hands along the entire length.
  • The bracket must be assembled according to the standard technology described above.

Save the life of roller shutters for a long time

Often, over time, roller blinds begin to sag, and their appearance deteriorates significantly. To prevent this, even during the installation of the structure, it is necessary to fix the bottom rail, on which the material is fixed, using a pair of magnetic holders. To do this, magnets must be glued with double-sided tape or foam tape. This will allow you to open windows in any position and keep the appearance of the curtains for many years.

The choice of roller blinds is almost limitless. Having chosen the appropriate color, size, transparency, you have to decide how the design will be fixed. It depends on this choice how comfortable it will be to use the curtains, how long they can be used.

This article describes the various installation methods: on plastic and wooden window frames, on the wall, ceiling. Each method has its own characteristics. We hope that the information in the article will help you find a roller blind that will work properly and please the eye for many years.

The roller blind can be held on a special fastener or on adhesive tape. Can be fixed:

  • on the window profile;
  • to the slope inside the window opening;
  • above the window opening on the wall;
  • to the ceiling.

The choice depends on the size of the canvas, the characteristics of the room, personal preferences.

It is preferable to hang massive rolls on special fasteners that are held on self-tapping screws. Small, lightweight structures will hold on to a special adhesive tape or double-sided tape without any problems. As a rule, in the package with the finished roller blind there are 2 different mounting kits, and the buyer chooses at his discretion. When ordering for individual sizes, you can choose fasteners according to the manufacturer's recommendation.

It is advisable to fasten large massive rollers to the ceiling. With a ceiling mount, structural deformation is less likely due to the rational distribution of the load (the center of gravity will be under the screws, and not to the side of them). For ceiling mounting, a niche can be provided.

Visually hide the dimensions of a large roller will help fastening to the slope. Once you decide to fix the roller blind to the slope, make sure that the slope material can withstand the load. For example, there will be no problems with fixation on plastered and putty slopes. Slopes from sandwich panels will not hold self-tapping screws.

A small window, especially without a window sill, will look stylish with a curtain attached to the wall above the window opening.

Light and compact rolls can be fixed on the window frame. This solution will allow you to make the most efficient use of the surface of the window sill.

IMPORTANT! When choosing a fastener, make sure that the windows open and close freely.

When using rolled sheets with curtains and curtains at the same time, it is important to provide enough space for all window decor elements.

Guide rails for roller blinds significantly extend their lifespan. They provide movement without displacement and deformation.

Mounting on plastic windows

For plastic windows, fastening without the use of self-tapping screws is preferable, since subsequently, when deciding to remove the decor, it will be problematic to mask the holes.

If for some reason you decide to install the structure on plastic windows using self-tapping screws, our recommendations are detailed in the next section on mounting on wooden windows. The only feature will be that before screwing the screws into the plastic frame, it is better to drill holes in it with a drill.

Without drilling into the plastic profile, roller blinds can be fixed using spring brackets or plates, which are fixed with a special adhesive tape or double-sided tape.

Each model of curtains may have separate features, which will be necessarily reflected in the accompanying instructions. Perhaps the most significant difference will be the choice of fastening depending on whether the sash opens. For opening doors, spring brackets are used, for deaf doors - plates. However, the principle of fastening without drilling is the same for all canvases and is as follows:

  1. We prepare all the components from the curtains and a pencil, as well as in the absence of a special adhesive tape in the kit, double-sided tape.
  2. Fasteners and the surface of the profile on which the roll will be attached must be thoroughly washed, degreased with alcohol and dried.
  3. We glue the pieces of adhesive tape on the fasteners, leaving a protective film on the side that will be in contact with the window profile.
  4. We assemble the design of the roller blind completely.
  5. We fix it on the window with our hands, without gluing it to the tape.
  6. We mark with a pencil the boundaries of the fasteners (brackets or plates).
  7. We remove the structure from the window, disconnect the roller with the canvas.
  8. We remove the protective film from the fasteners and firmly press the fasteners into the marked place.
  9. We fix the roller in the holders.
  10. We check whether the mechanism works properly: open and close the curtain.

Mounting on wooden windows

For wooden windows, it is preferable to fasten roller blinds to self-tapping screws. They provide high structural strength. In case of refusal from them, after the screws there are no sticky traces that require great effort to remove.

Holes in the tree are puttied easily and without a trace. Having decided to install a roller blind on wooden windows using double-sided tape, you can read our recommendations in the previous section.

The principle of installation on self-tapping screws:

  1. We lay out all the components from the curtains on a flat surface, make sure that there are self-tapping screws in the kit. If not, we'll get ours. You will also need a drill and a pencil.
  2. We assemble by connecting the roller with fasteners.
  3. We attach the structure to the window profile, without screwing anything, we fix it with our hands.
  4. Mark the holes with a pencil. They must match the holes, that is, you mark them as through a stencil.
  5. We remove the structure from the window.
  6. We disconnect the fasteners, apply them to the marked place, fasten them with self-tapping screws.
  7. We put the lifting mechanism on the gear.
  8. We make sure that everything works properly: we lower and raise the curtain.

Wall mounts

Roller blinds are attached to the wall only with self-tapping screws.

  • We prepare all parts of the curtains, self-tapping screws with dowels, a pencil, a level, a puncher (maybe a drill will be enough).
  • We assemble the structure.
  • We put it on the wall.
  • Mark the holes. It is advisable to use the level. While the installation on the window frame occurs almost along the edge of the frame, and it itself can be considered a level, it is recommended to align the roll on the wall and mark it according to the level.
  • We drill holes according to the size of the screws. With a high degree of probability, you will have to use a puncher, especially in a multi-storey building. As a rule, windows are located in load-bearing walls. They often contain metal fittings. The probability of getting a drill into the fittings increases significantly if you drill a hole directly above the window where the jumper is located. An ordinary drill will not cope with such a task.
  • We hammer the dowels into the holes.
  • We fasten the fasteners to the screws.
  • We put the chain mechanism on the gear.
  • We hang the roller in fasteners.
  • We check the operation of the mechanism, lower and raise the roller blind.

Fastening without drilling

The way to decorate a window with roller blinds without drilling involves the use of adhesive tape. This mount is suitable for windows with plastic frames. In rare cases, the roll can be fixed on the upper slope of the window. For this, the slope must be made of PVC.

IMPORTANT! Attaching to a PVC slope is associated with some problems:

  • the slope may not be perfectly even, and a deviation from the level even by a couple of millimeters causes the entire roll to skew, which can cause damage to the edges; slope deformation can also occur as a result of the installation of a structure on it;
  • the quantity and quality of the adhesive tape must correspond to the weight; if the choice is wrong, the structure may fall.

Double-sided tape is able to hold the roller blind on a wooden window, but this is not rational. For wooden structures, a self-tapping connection would be more suitable.

Fastening to plastic frames is described in detail above in the 3rd section of our article; to wooden ones - in the 4th.

Roller blinds are attached to the ceiling with self-tapping screws, by analogy with the wall:

  1. We prepare all structural elements, self-tapping screws and dowels, a pencil, a perforator.
  2. We collect the curtain.
  3. Attach it to the ceiling.
  4. Mark the holes with a pencil.
  5. We drill them out.
  6. We drive dowels into them.
  7. We fix the fasteners in the holes with self-tapping screws.
  8. We put the chain mechanism on the gear.
  9. We fix the roller in the holders.
  10. We check how the mechanism works.

IMPORTANT! It is possible to fix the curtains on the ceiling only if it has sufficient strength (for example, concrete or wood). If the room has a stretch ceiling, it is advisable to choose a different installation method or wait for repairs and change the ceiling.

Common installation errors

Despite the simplicity of the design, typical errors occur during installation. Let's describe them so you can avoid them.

  • When choosing, it is important to remember that the width of the canvas is a separate characteristic, and the total width of the curtain is the distance from the edge of one connection to the edge of the second.
  • After selecting the position for installing the roll, lower the curtain and turn the window handles in all directions, open and close the windows. Very often, after installation, it turns out that the canvas interferes with the functionality of window handles or frames.
  • When choosing the installation position, it is necessary to take into account the full length of the canvas so that its top does not turn out to be raised unreasonably high, while the bottom does not close the window and freely transmits light.
  • When using adhesive tape, it is important to thoroughly clean and degrease the surfaces. Neglect of this rule significantly reduces the strength of the structure. It can collapse at the most unexpected moment.

Conclusion

Having considered the main ways of fastening a roller blind, let's summarize.

Intuitive choice is not enough. It is necessary to take into account:

  • design features of the room in general and the window in particular;
  • window material.

Each fastener has its own advantages and disadvantages, they are described in the article; when choosing, it is reasonable to weigh all the operating conditions.

The installation of massive roll structures is recommended to be carried out with someone from relatives or friends. It is difficult and inconvenient to hold a large roller alone, and most importantly, it is not clear how smoothly its installation turns out.

We hope the article did not leave you with questions regarding installation, and the process will give you pleasant and not time-consuming chores.
