Do-it-yourself bathroom renovation costs 1.5-2 times cheaper than the same renovation made by a team of workers. Therefore, if you have the necessary knowledge, skill, free time and want to save money, then this option is for you. But remember that an inexpensive do-it-yourself bathroom renovation can be inferior in quality to repairs made by professionals.

Preparation for repair

Cheap bathroom renovations are, by definition, do-it-yourself projects. Therefore, preparation for it includes several stages. Let's look at each of them.

Layout and design

First of all, you need to decide on the future design of the bathroom, draw the layout of the bathroom - this will further depend on complex work with pipes and plumbing, and the need for additional wiring.

Cost calculation

Familiarize yourself with the prices in the construction markets. So you can understand whether all your ideas are feasible and how they fit into the budget.

For example, we will give a table with the cost of materials for an inexpensive self-repair of a bathroom:

Purchase of materials

You need to buy building materials based on the area of your bath. The volume of necessary materials can be suggested to you by the seller himself in the market or in a hardware store.

3-5% is laid on the battle of tiles when repairing a large bathroom and 7% when repairing a small one.

When buying cement, mixtures, sand, grout, putty, sealant or silicone, you need to add 30% to the required volume. Let it be better for you to have an extra bag of dry glue than it ends at a crucial moment.

Stages of work

Bathroom renovation is carried out in a strictly defined sequence:

 • Thinking through the interior;
 • Determining the number of plumbing fixtures;
 • Preparation of the bathroom for renovation work;
 • Purchase of building materials;
 • Floor preparation (optional: waterproofing, screed, installation of a warm floor system);
 • Laying pipes and wiring;
 • Plaster;
 • Ceiling decoration;
 • Floor finishing;
 • Wall covering;
 • Installation of the ventilation system;
 • Bathtub and sink installation.

Let's proceed directly to the repair itself and consider in detail each stage.

materials

Pipes

Do-it-yourself work with steel pipes is fraught with many difficulties, but today it is the cheapest option on the market. Another disadvantage is that such pipes rust inside and they will have to be changed relatively soon.

Tile

Porcelain stoneware is a little more expensive than tile, but its strength is many times higher. Even smooth porcelain stoneware is completely non-slip, which is why we highly recommend choosing it as your flooring.

Tip: When buying, ask a consultant in the store to get 5-6 tiles from different packs and check their sizes.

Tools

You are doing a DIY bathroom renovation as shown in the video below, so choose a slow drying adhesive. It will allow you to work without haste, eliminate errors in time and control the quality of masonry.

A spatula will fit with 4-6 mm deep teeth unless otherwise indicated on the adhesive label.

Buy a tile cutter with a diamond drill, and for laying porcelain stoneware or tile with seams, it is best to use plastic crosses.

Bathroom preparation

Let's say your previous bathtub is not worn out yet, then you can update its appearance with an acrylic liner. But we recommend sending the old tin "trough" for scrap.

Before you start repairs, turn off the water and strip the bath to the “bare” walls. The wiring will also need to be turned off. During the repair, you can use a portable lamp and an extension cord - this is not usual, but safe.

Clean all walls, ceiling and floor. Start working from top to bottom. Use a respirator when cleaning. The tile is easily removed with a perforator and a chisel. Loose plaster is removed completely, Durable - leveled.

Floor preparation

Old tiles and cement backing must also be removed from the floor. If the screed is good, you can leave it; if not, remove it with a puncher. If, upon careful inspection of the screed, you notice only one or two small cracks, they can be eliminated with a liquid equalizer.

The layer of the self-leveling floor should be approximately 3-3.5 cm. But before that, the floor is waterproofed with aquaizol or polyethylene terephthalate.

Important: It is necessary to cover the walls with waterproofing at least 30 cm.

Communications and preparation of walls, ceiling

Pipes

Sewerage should be done taking into account easy access to it for inspection, cleaning, removing blockages and necessary repairs. Therefore, we advise you to run sewer pipes along the bottom, along the walls, and close them with galvanized tiles. Galvanization is attached to silicone and, if necessary, access to pipes can be easily removed using a special knife.

The replacement of all pipes begins precisely with sewerage. You will be able to cope with this task in one, maximum two days, and then proceed to the water pipes.

Wiring

All wires are laid to the plaster. The wire with double insulation is hidden in the corrugation - plastic or metal, depending on the budget.

Plaster

You need to plaster twice. Here, the quality of the work will play a big role, since you are plastering under the cladding. You will have to plaster, as always, starting from top to bottom.

Ceiling insulation

Even in the warmest apartment, when repairing a bathroom, it will be necessary to insulate the ceiling. This will allow you to avoid the formation of condensate, which, by the way, is the main cause of problems with the safety of the repair.

For this purpose, it is best to use LSU (glass-magnesium sheet) on silicone or special glue. Remember that while it dries, you will need strong supports.

Finishing in the bathroom

Ceiling

This is the most problematic part of the bath. Regardless of your decision to make an inexpensive bathroom renovation, you will have to pay special attention to the ceiling.

The most suitable options for finishing the ceiling are artificial laminate or plastic lining. If you chose the first option, then before gluing the laminate, the inside will need to be treated with a special PVA emulsion. Here you will also need slats, which can be removed only after the adhesive has completely dried.

Floor

Floor tiles are laid on mounting adhesive. Here it is better to avoid the presence of seams. The glue is applied with a spatula to the wrong side of the tile and to the floor itself.

Important: laying floor tiles must be started from the entrance, so incomplete tiles will hide under the bathroom.

To avoid the appearance of voids under the tile, it must be tapped with a rubber mallet immediately after laying.

Perhaps you have decided to lay a wooden floor in the bathroom. It looks noble, and it is pleasant to walk on it, but this option is much more expensive and more difficult to install and operate. So think twice before choosing this option.

From wood, you can use larch impregnated with PVA and coated with moisture-resistant acrylic varnish. When laying, step back from the wall by 2-3 cm, and then fill this gap with foam and cover with a plinth.

Walls

Usually tiles are chosen for walls. This is a more budget option than porcelain stoneware, and its strength does not play a decisive role here. Wall cladding in the bathroom is done using plastic crosses, which are subsequently removed, and the seams are filled with grout, silicone or sealant.

The tile is laid on the glue, after it dries, the corners are filled with silicone. Excess silicone is immediately removed with vinegar. Sometimes the corners are decorated with special overlays, which are also attached to silicone, but this is not necessary.

Plumbing installation

Installing plumbing fixtures is actually the easiest part of the job. It's much easier than many people think. The whole process is described in detail in the instructions for each item.

First, the bath or shower is installed, then the sink. After the mixers are mounted, water heaters and water meters are installed. The hood and waterproof lamp are installed last. In the photo you can see examples of successful do-it-yourself bathroom renovations.

Video

Most of the inhabitants of our country live in apartments with standard layouts, and it seems that it is simply not possible to make some interesting interior design.

However, even in a room of 4 - 6 sq.m. you can embody some ideas of modern bathroom design, which is based on "three pillars": the use of natural materials in decoration, multifunctional furniture and stylish accessories and sanitary ware.

Bathroom design in different styles

To begin with, you will need to decide on the stylistic direction of your bathroom design. You should have a clear and understandable general concept for the design of the room in your head.

It must be remembered that the real beautiful bathrooms- these are premises that have their own individual, carefully selected image, which is maintained even in small things. That is why, before planning an interior design, it is better to familiarize yourself with the most relevant style trends today and choose the right one, taking into account your aesthetic preferences.

You should also pay attention to the dimensions of the bathroom, since luxurious furniture and accessories, typical, for example, for baroque or classicism, require a lot of space, an abundance of light and air. And minimalism or Japanese style is good for chamber rooms.

Scandinavian style bathroom design

The Scandinavian-style interior is distinguished by a fairly light color scheme. White is most often used as the base color, which is complemented by some bright accents. The room should be very bright, due to this, the illusion of spaciousness is created. Natural finishing materials are used. It is better to choose bathroom furniture with minimal processing and natural texture, for example, birch or oak. Bright accents are best created using original bathroom accessories or textiles. It should be noted that in the Scandinavian design of the bathroom there is no place for a shower cabin in the form in which it is found in building supermarkets, because. it will not be in harmony with the general mood and aesthetics of the room. If you want to free up space as much as possible by installing a shower cabin, then you will need to resort to specialists and implement a shower cabin in the form of glass partitions without a pallet, with a drain built directly into the floor.

Urban bathroom design

The main task of the modern urban style is to create the most functional design in a limited space. The main features that the design of your bathroom should match are thoughtfulness of all details, convenience and impeccable style. Use modular furniture in the interior, various built-in niches and cabinets for storing cosmetics and textiles. It is better to build household appliances in a closet. To expand and make the most of the space, consider combining the toilet and bathroom.

The main color of the bathroom, made in urban style, is gray.

In the design of the bathroom, you should use materials that correspond to the urban style, namely glass, stone, wood and plastic. An acceptable finish for an “urban” bathroom will be concrete painted in one color. You can choose any shade of gray, white, light beige or brutal black. Remember that the urban style is not characterized by smooth lines, but rather, on the contrary, clear contours and boundaries. The ideal solution for a bathroom in the spirit of "urban" would be a rectangular or square-shaped sink and a shower cabin with completely transparent glass partitions without a tray with a drain in the floor. To make the walls of the bathroom with a concrete effect, you can use a specialized spatula suitable for finishing wet rooms. It imitates concrete well, is applied similarly to plaster. Moreover, you can update the interior without removing the old tiles, because. spatula mass allows application to tiles. You can also use decorative plaster to decorate the walls in the bathroom.

Loft style bathroom design

Loft is a kind of urban style. The literal translation sounds like an attic or attic, i.e. we are talking about premises not intended for living (non-residential). A striking hallmark of the loft is its bohemianism, which distinguishes it from the usual urban style. The room to create an interior in the loft style should be spacious. Most likely, you will have to demolish the partition between the bathroom and the toilet. To make a stylish loft bathroom design, you will need to combine elements of urbanism with modern technology, an abundance of mirrors, glass surfaces and non-standard accessories (bright posters, road signs, etc.). The walls of the bathroom should be with an imitation of "bare" brickwork or concrete without any finishing. For a loft style, a sink in the form of a metal bowl is ideal. The toilet bowl should also be non-standard, so if you are planning to design a bathroom in a loft style, then you will have to spend a lot of money, despite its apparent simplicity at first glance.

A characteristic feature of loft-style interior design is “bare” brickwork.

Art Deco bathroom design

Art Deco style can be described as luxurious, fashionable, luxury. To create an art deco interior, expensive finishing materials, fine wood furniture, and exclusive accessories are used. In such a luxurious interior, as a rule, there are columns, statues, crystal chandeliers and candelabra. An art deco bathroom should have expensive sanitary ware, Italian from the latest collection, marble countertops, plaster or glass figurines, an abundance of accessories that dazzle with their golden sheen and other luxury items. Art Deco is characterized by geometry (remember the intro to the recently released film Gatsby). Stylish geometric patterns should serve as a decoration for walls, furniture or accessories. Traditional art deco interior colors: black, burgundy, purple, white, gold, brown.

The main finishing material should be chosen bright ceramic tiles - either in a contrasting combination of white and black, or in the form of a mosaic panel of golden, coffee, chocolate or purple hues. It is better to use saturated colors in doses - inserts, and make the main background neutral: creamy, ivory, milky.

The corner bath of the latest model, the unusual shape of the washbasin and the bidet will fit perfectly into the interior of the Art Deco bathroom.

Furniture is needed rectangular, with patterned decorative overlays and large, shiny fittings. Excellent art objects will be a designer heated towel rail and a mirror in a relief frame depicting the sun.

For those who love self-expression on the verge of outrageous, a bathroom design in this style is ideal.

Retro bathroom design

If you like bright colors and extravagance, then retro style is most likely for you. In recent years, this style is experiencing a rebirth. It is again in demand both in the beauty industry and in interior design. Designing a bathroom in retro style is not so difficult. A lot of original accessories made in the spirit of the 50s and 60s are now on sale.

Choose a distressed bathroom set, buy Andy Warhol à la posters, retro-style sanitary ware, and set bright accents with accessories, and here is your stylish “retro” bathroom ready. In a “retro” interior, it is better to use either a bright contrasting palette or, on the contrary, muted pastel colors. It all depends on your personal preferences.

Asian style bathroom design

It is for bathroom design that a discreet Asian style is often chosen. Perhaps this is due to the desire to create an atmosphere of calm and tranquility in the bathroom. An integral element of oriental interiors are fragrant, spicy aromas hovering in the air, which help to relax and calm down after a hard day. The interior itself is quite concise and non-irritating. Finishing should be made of natural materials (stone, wood, clay). It is better to make the light slightly muffled. On the countertop next to the sink, you can put a decorative fountain or a small planter with a beautiful orchid or bamboo stalks. Finding Asian-style interior items in modern furniture and home goods hypermarkets is now easy. Focusing on the Asian-style bathroom design photo, you will understand what you need to create it.

Atmospheric Asian bathroom interior.

Japanese-style bathroom design looks exotic, but for those who consider bathing as the best way to relax, this is perhaps the ideal option.

Wood or bamboo must be present in the wall decoration, at least in small quantities, if we are talking about small rooms. In extreme cases, shelves, footrests and accessories can be made from these materials.

The interior of the bathroom is unthinkable without traditional shoji partitions made of translucent paper stretched over a wooden frame. A similar design, or its imitation using plastic or glass, is good to use as a screen for the toilet and bidet. The fact is that it is not customary for the Japanese to install any plumbing in the bathing room, except for the bath. In addition, sliding "shoji" will successfully replace the usual swing door.

As an idea for a Japanese-style bathroom, we can recommend an imitation of an “ofuro” bathing barrel - sheathe an ordinary acrylic container with wood, and make a decorative strip of pebbles on the floor around or put some beautiful stones.

Furniture should be chosen in a minimalist style, roomy, so that all but the most necessary things are hidden, and not lying in plain sight. An important detail is the lighting - it should be diffused, dim and as close to natural as possible.

Ethnic style bathroom design

Ethnic style is original and difficult to perform, because. consists of many seemingly incompatible parts. To create it in the interior, folk motifs are widely used. Colors for the interior are chosen warm and pleasant: sand, terracotta, beige, olive, mustard, brown. The closeness to nature is emphasized by the abundance of wood in the decoration. Tables and chests of drawers can be made of rough and unhewn wood. Often, upholstered furniture and carpets are decorated with animal prints. For decoration, wooden masks, figurines, clay vases, metal or wooden bowls are used. The flight of fantasy is unlimited, the main thing is to choose a general direction. Ethnic style may contain African, Indian, Japanese, Spanish or Mexican motifs.

Classic style bathroom design involves the use of expensive finishing materials - natural wood, marble, exclusive ceramic tiles. Fragments of walls, where there are no direct sources of water, can be covered with wallpaper with embossed or classic patterns, or plastered and decorated with hand-painted.

Furniture should be solid, preferably carved, with gilded or bronze fittings. Here, a natural stone countertop is preferable to an ordinary washbasin cabinet, and a large mirror in an exquisite frame should be hung above it.

When choosing plumbing fixtures for a classic-style bathroom interior, you should pay attention to products of traditional shape, light colors. A bathtub with legs and an oval washbasin in retro design will fit perfectly into the created image. In this case, taps and “antique” showers are good, without them the picture will seem incomplete.

As for modern novelties like a jacuzzi or a shower, you should not refuse them - in combination with classic furniture and decor, they will look quite harmonious. But all engineering communications must be hidden from prying eyes.

Decorated in a classic style, the bathroom is maintained in calm colors. All varieties of white are welcome in combination with ocher, light olive, sand and cream shades.

As for accessories, such interiors often use antiques, both functional and related to objects of art, as well as paintings, placing them in a recreation area, away from the water.

For a classic-style bathroom, natural light is ideal.

Timeless classic

If we consider the design of bathrooms in an ordinary apartment, then most often it approaches the minimalist style. This direction is great for small rooms, due to the limited number of furnishings and the almost complete absence of decor.

Minimalism is only light colors, with a predominance of white, laconic forms of furniture and plumbing, compact storage spaces, the absence of everything superfluous. Ergonomics and functionality raised to the highest degree and become art.

Large ceramic tiles, waterproof paints, plaster, natural or artificial stone, wood are used for decoration.

Furniture has its own aesthetics and it is in a unique level of comfort, fine selection of colors, use of the most advanced technologies.

Thanks to the meticulous selection of all the details, the design of the bathroom in the style of minimalism impresses no less than the luxurious design of classic interiors.

Bathroom in the style of minimalism or "nothing more"

Provence is one of the best options for decorating spacious bathrooms. This style will appeal to adherents of classical traditions, who prefer simple homeliness to grand pomposity, and discreet beauty of natural materials to brilliance and gilding.

The design of the bathroom in the spirit of Provence involves a combined wall decoration, for example, wood panels or ceramic tiles in combination with waterproof paint. It is possible to use wallpaper, but this option for decorating bathrooms is extremely rare.

Furniture should be streamlined, without sharp corners and aggressive lines. The facades of the lockers are artificially aged, covered with carvings (or its imitation), or painted by hand to create the desired color.

Transparent partitions, furniture of a simple form, but with a functional “stuffing”, as well as ultra-modern plumbing, preferably “smart”, are welcome. It is in this style, like nowhere else, that the design of a bathroom without a bathtub is appropriate when a shower stall or compartment is chosen for water procedures.

Modern is the best thing created in the age of high technology. If the bath is already left, then it is made of transparent acrylic, and a similar sink is included with it, moreover, it is suspended with the same pedestal or chest of drawers. And no supports, which have long been considered yesterday.

And the Art Nouveau bathroom also requires stretch ceilings, which are recognized as an ideal option for wet rooms in terms of aesthetics and hygiene.

Modern style is equally suitable for both spacious and intimate rooms. It is only important to correctly place accents and not overload the interior so that each piece of furniture remains exclusive.

The Mediterranean is a region with ancient traditions and beautiful nature. It includes Greece, as well as partly Italy and Spain. There is a lot of sun and sea in this region, and echoes of ancient times are still felt in the local culture.

Mediterranean style allows you to create incredibly beautiful bathrooms in any area and this is one of its main advantages.

The color scheme of the room should be kept in warm, "sunny" colors, but muted, without sharp contrasts. Suitable shades of eggshell, ocher, terracotta, beige, sand or olive.

Of the finishing materials, large ceramic tiles or marble and textured plaster are preferred, at least fragmentarily, in some areas. Borders with a classic meander, a popular ancient Greek ornament, are welcome.

The bath should be done with a podium of several steps. The furniture is light, elegant without excessive pretentiousness, perhaps with forged elements. The material is natural wood or MDF, but not plastic or other modern polymers.

Decorative ideas for a Mediterranean-style bathroom can be very diverse. Wicker baskets and trays, unglazed red clay vases reminiscent of Greek amphoras, textile bathroom curtains and exotic "seafood" will be good as accessories.

Mediterranean style in bathroom design

To create an oriental-style bathroom interior design, you will have to work hard. First you need to decide which country's cultural traditions will form the basis of the decor. In our case, we will talk about exotic and beautiful in its mystery interiors of Morocco.

The first thing you should pay attention to is the finishing tile. It should have a characteristic "oriental" pattern, which folds into an intricate ornament. Such tiles are very colorful, so not the whole room is finished with it, alternating with a special waterproof Tadelakt plaster of rich blue, turquoise, terracotta or crimson shades.

Apertures in the walls and decorative elements, for example, a mirror frame, are given an arched finish. Furniture is chosen from natural wood or MDF, laconic form, preferably with openwork inserts. To divide the space, if the room is spacious enough, carved screens can be used.

Morocco in bathroom design

The design of the bathroom in the style of "high technology" is like a look into the future from the present, an image inspired by the works of science fiction writers and the work of futurists.

Straight lines, monochrome colors, the predominance of metal, glass and modern synthetic materials are all easily recognizable high-tech elements.

Large ceramic tiles, artificial stone, and sometimes plaster imitating exposed concrete are used to finish walls and floors.

In such an interior, only a shower cabin is appropriate, and if the area of the room allows, you can purchase models combined with a bathroom - this is both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable.

The best solution would be built-in furniture, as if merged with the plane of the wall. As decor, glass shelves are used above the washbasin, which, since we are talking about hi-tech, will look more like a hanging sculpture made in the best traditions of modernism.

The design of the bathroom in this case does not provide for accessories, and lighting performs the main decorative function.

Lamps will need a variety and in large quantities. For the ceiling, especially if it is stretched, dot built-in models or spots are suitable. But the shower cabin and mirror can be additionally highlighted with neon lamps. Bright shades - blue, purple or yellow will create a special "alien" atmosphere in the room, inherent only in hi-tech.

High tech bathroom design

A rustic-style bathroom is a great choice for a country house, as it will require a spacious room, preferably with natural light and ventilation.

Walls in country interiors are finished with light-colored ceramic tiles, using borders and inserts with floral patterns. But wood panels at half the height of the room will be especially good here, combined with plaster of a deliberately rough texture. If possible - that is, the room is well ventilated, which protects it from excessive moisture, it is better to stop at the second option.

For the floor, unglazed tiles in warm, terracotta shades are suitable.

Furniture should be simple, wooden, with brass fittings. It is good to purchase antique plumbing fixtures from the same metal as a set for it. Open shelves lined with home-made natural cosmetics or serving as a storage for bath towels will harmoniously complement the overall picture. And the washbasin will perfectly fit into a massive countertop made of wood or natural stone, which will be much more appropriate than an ordinary cabinet.

It is better to choose an oval-shaped bathtub with legs - modern models, as well as shower cabins, will violate the “purity of style”.

Another important component of the country direction is textiles. No rustic bathroom interior is complete without fabric curtains, if not on the windows, then at least as a shower curtain.

country country

A spacious bathroom with a window allows you to use one of the most sophisticated and at the same time cozy styles for decoration - English, or as it is also called, Victorian.

Those who choose this direction will have to abandon many stereotypes. So, the real bathrooms of the Victorian era were more like luxurious living rooms than utility rooms. There was no question of any tiles in them. The walls were covered with wallpaper with a characteristic floral pattern, or painted in green, terracotta or cream shades, and the floors were often made of wood.

Today, parquet has been replaced by ceramic tiles, but otherwise the design of the English-style bathroom has not changed.

Plumbing for such interiors is selected in a retro style, great attention is paid to details and accessories. A bathtub with bent legs, covered with dark enamel or hand-painted on the outside, is also a characteristic touch of Victorianism.

And the room is also necessarily decorated with paintings depicting birds or plants and multi-layered textile draperies, while the floors are covered with small carpets.

And, finally, in addition to functional furniture - lockers for storing bathing accessories and cosmetics, Victorian-style bathrooms are equipped with dressing tables, couches for relaxing and a fireplace.

A shabby chic bathroom is more like a boudoir - delicate, pastel shades, an abundance of charming (you can't say otherwise) accessories, floral motifs in the decor, lace textiles.

It is good to relax here after a day full of events or to put yourself in order, intending to plunge into the intense rhythm of everyday life.

For finishing the room, they usually take light waterproof paint - white or cream. Ceramic tiles of milky shades are also suitable, with which panels are laid out at half the height of the walls and the floor.

Shabby chic involves the use of vintage or artificially aged furniture, as if bought at a flea market or found in my grandmother's attic. Headsets with the same type of furnishings are not suitable for this direction. On the other hand, a washbasin converted from an old sewing machine and a shelf from the hallway instead of a mirror stand will be appropriate and harmonious.

There should be a lot of accessories: vases, pictures of flowers, a mirror in an ornate frame, vintage lamps and porcelain figurines - all this will find its place and create a unique bathroom design.

There is only one "but". It’s good if the shabby chic bathroom is not the only one in the house. Since the representatives of the stronger sex in such a room will be uncomfortable.

Bathroom design in different colors

If you have chosen a general style, then it will be easier for you to navigate the color scheme for decorating the bathroom. However, many of us prefer to focus on the color of the bathroom, and not on the style. If you go this way, then to create a harmonious interior, you need to adhere to the following color scheme. To create a "calm" interior:

 • 80% in the design of the bathroom should be occupied by “basic colors” - white, beige, shades of brown, shades of gray, in rare cases black;
 • the remaining 20% of the space should be filled with bright details (textiles, accessories, furniture, lighting elements), or you can do without bright colors at all.

If you want to create a bright and colorful interior, then the separation between "basic" and intense shades should be approximately 50/50.

What issues should be prioritized when meeting?

 1. Ergonomics . This position is crucial for rooms with limited space. It is necessary to arrange furniture and plumbing fixtures in such a way that they do not hit corners and do not feel bouts of claustrophobia, being afraid to turn around once again in a cramped space.
 2. Safety . According to statistics, the bathroom is the most traumatic room in the house. The reason for this is the wrong choice of flooring, which, when water gets on it, turns into a real ice rink.
 3. Ventilation . High humidity in the bathroom can lead to mold growth. In order to avoid an unpleasant "neighborhood", care should be taken to regularly ventilate the room - natural or forced.
 4. The design of the bathroom depends on the personal preferences of the owner and fashion trends. However, for a small space it is undesirable to choose dark colors, tiles with a colorful pattern, complex decorative shapes. Such techniques are good only in spacious rooms.

To match or not to match

This question is faced by almost every owner of a separate bathroom and bathroom. Such a planning solution has its pros and cons. We list them for those who are just thinking about a combined bathroom and are not yet completely sure of its advantages.

Bathroom and the bathroom is a great tandem:

 • With the small size of both rooms. Their combination makes it possible to expand the usable area and install additional equipment, such as a shower cabin, a jacuzzi and a washing machine.
 • If you want to embody the unusual bathroom design and need "space for creativity."
 • When the family is not very large and there are no small children in it.
 • If there is another separate bathroom in the apartment or house.

Now for the cons. It should be remembered that the combination is still a forced decision, dictated by the lack of space.

The main unpleasant moment in this case is the discomfort experienced by family members when one of them wants to soak in the bath, while the other needs to go to the toilet at the same time. Both are unlikely to be satisfied with each other's neighborhood and the only way out here is either to refuse lengthy water procedures so as not to cause inconvenience to loved ones, or to arrange them while no one is in the house.

From an aesthetic point of view, it is also better if the bathtub or shower stall becomes the only plumbing fixtures in the room intended for bathing.

Finishing materials - what to prefer

What materials will help create an exclusive bathroom design, while meeting the basic safety and functionality requirements?

Given the high humidity of the room, for its decoration are suitable:

 • ceramic tile:
 • waterproof paints based on acrylic, latex or silicone;
 • plastic panels;
 • wallpaper;
 • self-adhesive film;
 • natural or artificial stone;
 • wood;
 • waterproof plaster.

Let's start with ceramic tiles - a traditional material with which the most diverse and beautiful bathrooms. Of course, this is the best choice for rooms where condensation constantly forms, provoking the appearance of mold.

The main advantages of ceramic tiles:

 • Versatility. The tile allows you to embody design options in any style - from classic to minimalism. A variety of shapes, colors and textures makes this material very expressive, and thanks to additional decorative elements: borders and inserts with painting or bas-relief, bright accents are created.
 • Wet environment resistance.
 • Hygiene. Ceramic tile is easily cleaned of dirt, its tight fit to the wall does not allow bacteria and pathogenic microflora to accumulate in the cracks.
 • Durability.

The disadvantages of ceramic coating include the complexity of installation and low impact resistance.

Willing to endure bathroom design in the same style, many use tiles not only for walls, but also for the floor. The best choice in this case would be porcelain stoneware - it has high strength characteristics and, most importantly, does not slip, even when moisture gets on it.

Artificial stone has similar advantages, the color of which is easy to choose for the overall color scheme of the interior.

Plastic panels are the most budgetary and fastest way to finish a bathroom. Their advantages:

 • Fast installation.
 • Possibility to hide engineering communications.
 • Resistant to high humidity and temperature extremes.
 • Hygiene, undemanding care.

Of course, plastic will not please you with the sophistication of finishes and the variety of decorative solutions, but with its help you can change bathroom interior.

As far as wallpaper, plaster or waterproof paints are concerned, they should only be used in well-ventilated, spacious rooms. Such materials make it possible to embody the most creative design projects, use painting or bas-relief in wall decoration, which will make the look of the bathroom exclusive and stylish.

And wallpaper, and plaster, and paint, despite the increased moisture resistance, are not suitable for finishing areas around the bathroom and washbasin, where direct contact with large amounts of water is possible. Here it is preferable to use "aprons" made of ceramic tiles or artificial stone.

Bathroom design: selection of furniture and accessories

Recently, interior designers are increasingly giving preference to functional furniture made from natural materials. The goal is to create a comfortable atmosphere for living. Natural, soft textures, warm and calm shades are used. If we talk about the bathroom, then they try to choose compact plumbing and furniture in order to free up space as much as possible. Large massive bathrooms with hydromassage are no longer held in high esteem, preference is given to minimalist trends in the interior. Restraint and elegance are in fashion. A minimum of decor, clear and simple forms. The main features of modern bathroom design: compactness, functionality, elegance.

Bathroom furniture

In the interior of the bathroom, you can increasingly find open niches in which they stand with towels folded into tubes, beautiful bottles of cosmetics and various bathroom accessories. All details are thought out to the smallest detail.

The trend of the 2017 season is marble integrated into the design of the bathroom, for example in the form of marble countertops, marble floor and wall tiles. In the design of the bathroom, furniture with a natural texture is increasingly used. As for plumbing and bathroom accessories, copper, gold, silver and brass are in fashion in 2017.

What should be considered when choosing bathroom furniture?

Thinking through the design of the bathroom, you should take care of the necessary furnishings. If the room is spacious, a standard furniture set - a wall cabinet with a mirror, a bedside table for a washbasin and a pencil case (most often a corner one) can be supplemented with a couch for relaxation or a dressing table.

The current trend is the use of a wide and long countertop into which the sink is mounted. As a rule, the place under such a surface is not empty - there is a multifunctional chest of drawers or several separate cabinets and a washing machine.

Since the bathroom is a room with high humidity and often insufficiently ventilated, special requirements are imposed on the furniture:

 • The material from which the furnishings are made must be waterproof. The best choice is furniture made of MDF, polyurethane, plastic or metal structures in combination with glass. It is better to refuse products from chipboard, which are attractive primarily for their price. Luxury natural wood furniture is only suitable for spacious rooms with good ventilation.
 • Whatever the design of the bathroom, it is preferable to choose cabinets with legs or hanging to avoid possible contact with water spilled on the floor.
 • For wet rooms, only chrome fittings are suitable - they will not rust and collapse.
 • Chests of drawers, especially corner ones, will optimally solve the problem of compact storage of bath accessories, detergents and other frequently used items in the bathroom.
 • In small rooms, it is better to use vertical furniture - pencil cases or shelving systems.

To make the bathroom look like a single, harmonious space, you should think in advance how the furniture will “interact” with the decoration of the walls, ceiling and floor - whether it will be a nuanced combination or a game of contrasts. And, of course, it is necessary to maintain the overall style and color scheme of the room.

To summarize and once again recall the main features of modern bathroom design:

 • calm colors inspired by nature;
 • the predominance of natural materials: wood, clay, copper and marble;
 • interior design in a single and understandable style;
 • the use of functional, compact furniture and built-in household appliances;
 • maximum free space;
 • three popular color schemes: "white" Scandinavian design; mysterious, twilight, dark loft; discreet "natural" design.

For inspiration, we suggest you look at a selection of photos with various options for modern bathroom design.

Bathroom Design Examples

A bathroom is a place where a person is left alone with his thoughts, emotions, where, basking in a bath or taking a warm shower, he can mentally relax after a hard day's work. Irritation and fatigue go away in the bathroom, and in it, despite the situation around, the eye should rejoice, and therefore it is very important to know how to make a bathroom with your own hands competently.

Here you need to think about everything to the smallest detail - the arrangement of appliances and bathroom furniture, the texture and color of the coatings, the reliability and design of plumbing fixtures.

Bathroom renovation: how to do it right

Repair must begin with careful preparation. To do this, you need to take several sheets of paper, a tape measure to measure the dimensions of the bathroom, and calculate the area of the bathroom.

How beautiful to make a bathroom is a purely personal opinion. Someone loves the floor and walls lined with ceramic tiles more, someone paints the facades with water-based paint, and some, in addition to everything, change sinks, bathtubs, faucets and other accessories to new ones.

After all the preliminary calculations, it will become clear what color and design the new bath will be in, where it is better to hang a mirror and install a washing machine. Further, having an approximate picture, you need to purchase everything you need - equipment, materials and accessories that meet the plan.

The next stage of the bathroom renovation will be cleaning the ceiling and walls from the old tiles (of course, if it was pasted there) - a very dusty and dirty job.

In the houses of the Soviet period, the walls of the bathroom were often painted with ordinary paint - it must be completely removed.

This can be done both mechanically, i.e. beat off, and with the help of new technologies: using solvents or hair dryers (this method is good because the tile is removed along with the adhesive mixture).

The first and most dirty stage of repair is over. Next, the clean ceiling must be puttied, and the walls treated with a primer, new electrical wiring, pre-determine where the mirror and the washing machine will be located.

The next step will be the replacement of sewerage, plumbing and risers (pipes between floors).

It would be right not to save at this stage, since in the future decrepit and old pipes, most often, can make themselves felt at any moment.

Do not forget about the waterproofing of the floor, so that spilled water does not seep to the neighbors. The bathroom floor must also be screeded.

The joints between the walls and the floor must be covered with a waterproofing solution, and in addition, waterproofing must be carried out over the entire area of the bathroom - in case water starts to go over the edge of the bathtub or breaks through the pipe.

Once the bathroom is in order, you can start laying the tiles - either by yourself or by hiring a master tiler. It is better to start laying tiles from the side where the bath will be, as this will make the bath less dirty with mortar.

Next comes the bathtub. For those cases when the front side of the bath is planned to be closed, to save money, the floor under it may not be tiled. If it was planned to replace the door in the bathroom, then this should be done now, and then the tiles should be laid on the wall where the door is located.

After laying the tiles on the walls and floor, a plinth is installed around the perimeter of the ceiling. The ceiling must be painted with waterproof water-based paint - it looks beautiful, and besides, you can choose a shade to match the color of the laid tiles.

It is checked that in the future moisture will not accumulate on the ceiling and, therefore, it will not darken over time. This is one of the possible options for how to make a bath.

An alternative to it would be to install a stretch ceiling or plastic panels on the ceiling. With all the above steps, you get a very attractive bathroom.

Bathroom interior

Now consider how you can make the bathroom beautiful:

Apply bright colors. Individual approach in - the advice of modern designers.

You should deviate from the usual understanding of color combinations and combine bright palettes.

 1. The bathroom will become special if it has upholstered furniture. Of course, if the size of the room itself allows it. A special water-repellent coating has been created for upholstered furniture. Therefore, such furniture will not deteriorate even in conditions of high humidity.

The stereotype of a bathroom standard with good tiled or ceramic tiles is a thing of the past. How to make a bath with your own hands so that it is unique? To do this, it is necessary to use other finishing materials that were previously not characteristic of finishing the bathroom and bathroom.

Designers have many options to offer, creating the latest looks and types of bathrooms. To create a unique cozy bathroom, you can use various types and breeds of stones - from valuable rocks to river pebbles. As an option, wood can be used for bathrooms, which is pre-treated with moisture-proof materials.

And now it's time to renovate the bathroom. How to make a decision: to give the work to specialists or still try it yourself? Do-it-yourself bathroom renovation is worth considering, because the price of the work of professionals is at least 50% of the cost of the purchased materials. Since repairing a bathroom and toilet (meaning qualitatively) is not a cheap "pleasure".

First of all, you need to find out the prices of construction companies, then draw up an estimate for the actual manual repair, and then draw conclusions. Let's figure out a little what materials and tools will be required. Then we will draw final conclusions.

materials

The choice of materials should be approached with the utmost care. Since the bathroom is a room with high humidity, the materials must be appropriate. That is, used in the repair of bathrooms or for outdoor work. So what does it take to make a bathroom renovation with your own hands?

 1. Wall tiles (tiled). It has a slightly smaller size relative to the sexual.
 2. Floor tiles (porcelain stoneware).
 3. Laminate.
 4. Adhesive-based masonry mix, grout and gap crosses.
 5. Solution "Bulk floor".
 6. CM sheet (Glass-Glass).
 7. Mortar for filling the floor (Thermo Plast)
 8. Plastic pipes PPN (cold) and PPR (hot water). The latter have a reinforced vein.
 9. Cranes, adapters and fittings for pipes.
 10. Sewerage, Du-50 pipe.
 11. PVA glue (emulsion)

Knowing what materials you need, we measure the areas of the ceiling, walls, floor. When purchasing tiles, you need to take into account the possible battle and add 3-5% of the total.

Tip: When calculating the amount of materials and their cost, ask the craftsmen not only the cost of work, but also the price of materials. Indeed, often for professional workers with permanent employment, construction stores offer discounts or give discount cards. If the contractor does not have this, there is a high probability of falling for the "hacks".

Design development and selection of plumbing

When choosing plumbing, you should seriously think about the design, because without an idea of the appearance of the future bath, it is impossible to select the required appliances. You can look for photos of ready-made solutions, or you can ask for help from designers, through whose efforts a turnkey design bathroom will be prepared. Then we proceed to the choice of accessories according to your taste and means. You should also consider how the washbasin and bathroom are placed, whether they will have separate faucets or you can get by with one, and whether the bathroom will be shared or separate.

Also, when choosing a mixer, you should pay attention to expensive ones with a hand sensor (infrared). This type of fittings will be much more economical than usual. Indeed, in some cases, saving water will be 50% or more, and electricity for heating water, about 35-40 percent.

Work order

Doing your own bathroom renovation , the exact sequence must be followed. Suppose a design has already been created, materials and plumbing have been purchased, there are tools (purchased or rented). So how do you get started with your bathroom renovation?

The most important thing is to be confident in your actions and get to work:

 1. We are preparing the room.
 2. We determine the condition of the floor, walls and ceiling.
 3. We begin a major overhaul of the floor: waterproofing, insulation and screed.
 4. We install pipelines.
 5. We lay the wiring
 6. Align the walls and ceiling (plastering).
 7. We insulate and sheathe the ceiling.
 8. I lay the floor.
 9. We carry out wall finishing: facing works, cleaning of seams and sealing corners (sealing).
 10. We install ventilation.
 11. We install and connect plumbing.

As you can see, renovating a bathroom on your own is different from other types of remodeling. And all why?

Firstly, the bathroom is a humid and warm room where there are comfortable conditions for the reproduction of bacteria. Therefore, the use of ordinary drywall and waterproof on a metal frame is impractical, because over time this coating will become a breeding ground for infection.

Secondly, bath finishing cannot be done with conventional floor coverings (laminate, parquet, wood, etc.), fasteners, parts, steel components subject to corrosion or oxidation, as well as highly absorbent materials.

Thirdly, special attention will need to be paid to electrical safety: increased and most importantly constant humidity of the floor, walls and ceiling, combined with high voltage, carries a great risk to human life.

Note: If you have a small bathroom, consider installing a walk-in shower or a corner bathtub. These alterations will help make the do-it-yourself bathroom more spacious, which will allow you to install a washing machine.

Preparing the room for work

First of all, we start disassembling the room: we take out all the appliances, mirrors, etc. At the next stage, we decide what will happen to the old bathroom. If it is a replacement, then it should be dismantled and a new bathtub or cubicle or corner bathtub installed. In the case when the bath is cast iron, then there is no point in changing to the same new one. It will be easier to make cosmetic repairs with an acrylic or epoxy compound.

At the next stage, we turn off all pipes and sewers. We close the taps and disconnect cold and hot water, then we dismantle all pipes from the toilet bowl, washbasin, faucets, heated towel rail. Then we clean up to bare walls.

Next, turn off the electricity in the bathroom on the switchboard and continue. We remove the old tiles and plaster on the walls to concrete or brickwork. If the do-it-yourself bathroom has strong plaster and is in good condition, it will be easier to renew it. We also remove the coating, old paint on the ceiling and floor.

Carefully! All work must be carried out in a respirator, goggles and gloves.

To remove the tiles from the walls, we use a perforator with a chisel (for concrete), you need to remove everything, there should be no residue of the solution. In the case of plaster, the top layer is removed and the surface is leveled, everything is cleaned off with a metal hair brush with a diameter of 80-100 mm.

Removing ceiling covering while renovating bathroom , do not forget about safety - take care of your head.

Since the work of removing coatings is very dusty, it is best done indoors, and if the door to the bathroom is removed, the opening must be tightly closed with a film.

Floor, ceiling and wall repairs

Having dismantled the old tile from the floor, we make an audit of the old screed. If the surface does not have chips and cracks, you can apply a diamond wheel to the grinder and simply level the surface. Otherwise, you will have to completely remove the entire coating to the base. If making repairs in the bathroom , you are replacing a cast-iron bath with any other, you can use a liquid equalizer. Otherwise, a cast-iron bath full of water will put too much pressure on the floor and cracks will appear again.

In the case when a major overhaul is being carried out, the best option would be to use a self-leveling floor. Although the ThermoPlast material itself is expensive, but for a small room its use will be very attractive and not much more expensive than conventional solutions. And whatever the material for the new screed, you will have to do waterproofing.

For this procedure, only appropriate materials should be used, such as polyethylene terephthalate or aquaizol. If the material has to be cut, then the joints should be heated with a building hair dryer and glued with a special adhesive mastic. When the entire plane is laid with an insulator and overlaps are made on the edges (at least 25 cm), a new floor constriction should be poured.

Tip: The liquid for the filler floor must be two-component. First, a thicker solution is applied, and then a liquid one (to level the floor).

Warming and screed

Do-it-yourself bathroom renovation , you should seriously think about the material for floor insulation. After all, the insulated floor is not only comfort, but also a guarantee of good health. So, among the suitable materials, glass-magnesite sheet (SML) should be noted, and expanded clay and foam concrete disappear due to high hygroscopicity and fragility.

LSU is a very durable material and provides the ability to mount beacons and mesh reinforcement.

Using a cement composition for a screed, it is necessary to use cement of quality 400 and higher, quartz sand (sifted), water with the addition of PVA (10-15%) - a volume equal to the amount of cement will be required. We make a solution in a ratio of 4 to 1, after which we apply a layer 4-5 cm thick (according to pre-installed markers) and align with the rule, followed by rubbing with a semi-terre to create a perfectly even surface for laying tiles.

Important! A new screed based on cement mortar should last about 40 days.

Installation of a bathroom begins with laying communications. You should start with the installation of sewage, after which they lay pipelines and install a heated towel rail.

Since pipelines always interfere, look ugly and an eyesore, it is best to hide them in a niche. But when we repair the bathtub with our own hands, we must remember that sewer pipes cannot be welded and they must always be available. Then the simplest solution would be to run all the pipes in one bundle along the bottom edge and close it with a galvanized sheet covered with tiles (it sits on a sealant to be able to remove the cover).

Only vertical sections for sewers, water pipes, and pipes for a heated towel rail will have to be ditched. To reduce and simplify the installation of drying, it is best to use metal-plastic pipes, because they are easier to hide in the wall.

In addition to pipes, a do-it-yourself bath must be electrically safe, you need to hide electrical wires in it, it is best to mount them in plastic, metal boxes or in corrugations. And use wires in double insulation due to the increased risk of electric shock.

Ceiling lining

When implementing a bath repair at home, do not forget about the insulation of the ceiling, even if your house is very warm. The most important advantage of insulation is the reduction or complete elimination of condensation. As a heater, the best option would be, as in the version with the floor, LSU. The sheets are fastened with an adhesive solution or silicone, and for the time the glue hardens, the sheets are supported by slats with the calculation of 1-2 slats per meter.

When we do repairs in the bathroom ourselves, we want to achieve the best result, and a beautiful and high-quality ceiling is the key to success. When choosing material for the ceiling, you need to remember the humidity of this room. And the best representatives for finishing the ceiling will be lining (plastic) or laminate. But there are a few caveats here:

 • All installation is carried out using a special mounting adhesive or silicone.
 • Laminate before installation is processed from the wrong side with PVA emulsion.
 • All boards must be supported with slats until the glue has completely dried.
 • Each joint is coated with a thin layer of glue or silicone before joining. And the remnants are immediately removed with a rag soaked in solvent (for adhesive solution) or ordinary vinegar (for silicone).
 • The two final planks are mounted together in a house-like manner and then clicked into place, after which the bathtub ceiling cladding is completed.

If questions suddenly arise: “Will the ceiling collapse on your head?” Or “moisture will not get under it?”, it is safe to answer that do-it-yourself bathroom decoration in this way is very reliable and durable. After all, you have a monolithic slab fixed on the ceiling and it is glued over the entire plane, and its seams are sealed, which prevents moisture from entering. Also, after mounting the ceiling, a tile is laid, which slightly overlaps the laminate, which is an additional fastening and holds the coating even more securely.

Floor and wall cladding

Laying tiles on walls and floors has a lot in common, namely:

 • The surface must be completely flat when we make a bath with our own hands.
 • The mixture is applied to the size of 2 or more tiles with a spatula. The size is somewhere around 0.25-0.35 sq.m.
 • Remove adhesive mixture streaks with a rag moistened with vinegar (for silicone) or flannel (microfiber can be used).
 • Each tile is certainly tapped with a rubber mallet (starting from the last one gradually towards the edge) so that there is no empty space under the tile.
 • You can use both tiles and porcelain tiles.
 • Holes for pipes, plumbing are made in advance, cut with a diamond cutter (crown).

In addition to the general points described, there are several features. Among these nuances are:

 • Tiles are placed on the wall with seams (through crosses), and on the floor without.
 • The best option for walls would be ceramic tiles (porcelain stoneware is also possible, but it is much more expensive), and porcelain stoneware for the floor. The latter has several advantages, in particular impact resistance and "non-slip" when wet.

Briefly about materials and tools

Plaster

When making repairs in your bathroom, you need to remember that the end result depends on the quality of the preparatory work. That's why:

 • plastering is carried out along the lighthouses;
 • obligatory is the imposition of 2 layers. Starting (tenacious base) and finishing (levels the surface).
 • plastering is carried out from ceiling to floor.
 • the edges of the waterproofing are attached with masking tape and plastered.

Pipes

Doing a bathroom renovation with your own hands, it is better to choose polypropylene pipes. You can also use metal-plastic, metal, PVC pipes, but they are less reliable and durable, although cheaper.

metal pipes- the cheapest, but very quickly rust on the inside and on the outside, as a result they become unusable.

PVC is suitable for cottages, private houses, that is, short-lived buildings, and besides, they are completely unsuitable for hot water supply.

metal-plastic suitable, but for large volumes where many bends, turns, etc. are required. (for a water floor, laying of heating and pipelines). Also, over time, fittings begin to leak.

Tile

To finish the bathroom with your own hands was at the highest level, you need to pay special attention to the choice of tiles. When buying, make sure that the surface of the tile does not have shells, chips, and other damage. To determine, it is best to look at the tile from the sides.

Another selection criterion will be the same size of slabs in different packages. Therefore, you need to ask the seller for several pieces of tiles from different packs and see the height and width. If the difference does not exceed 1 mm, then it can be taken.

Another important condition is the evenness of the surface. That is, the absence of "propellers", bumps, etc. To check, we put two tiles with a glossy side to each other and look from the end.

Tools and mixtures

When we make a bathroom with our own hands, we can highlight the main tools and materials that we cannot do without.

 • Glue for tiles. It is best to take a long drying time (12-24 hours). This glue will allow you to work slowly and correct all the “jambs”.
 • Spatula for adjusting the adhesive mixture. Optimum tooth pitch from 3 to 6 mm.
 • Tile cutter.
 • Diamond wheels, drills, crowns.
 • Rags, microfiber cloths, crosses, tile laying templates to make your bathroom impeccable.
 • Bulgarian, perforator and soldering iron with nozzles for polypropylene pipes.

You may also need other improvised materials: wooden slats, spatulas, level, stairs, etc., that is, everything to make the repaired turnkey bath with your own hands perfect.

Summing up

It is possible and even necessary to repair the bathroom on your own, but for many reasons this can be an impossible task.

First, the lack of the required tool. Perhaps a do-it-yourself bathroom being repaired with the purchase of a tool will cost more than repairs by professionals.

And, secondly, a complete lack of experience, and, most importantly, desire will also become a big problem.

If all these conditions are not terrible for you, the question “How to repair a bath with your own hands?” is not something supernatural and frightening, be sure to start self-repair.

And finally, I would like to clarify that this article is only for informational purposes and describes the superficial aspects of the repair. For a more detailed study, you can study the photo report of the masters, as well as the repair video available on our website. For example, "How to make a bath with your own hands."

And the most important rule of any master: "The eyes are afraid, but the hands are doing."
