Connecting 6 carob chandeliers to a double switch. Installation and connection of a five-arm chandelier with a two-gang switch. Short video with connection process

After acquiring a chandelier, its assembly follows, the complexity of which depends on its design features and type of fastening. If detailed manual instructions can help with this, then connecting a chandelier will require knowledge of electricians. The safety of lighting in the house depends on the correct observance of all conditions.

Preparation for work

First, it is necessary to determine the phase, zero and ground among the wires, the presence of which is optional. For ease of detection, you can use the electrical circuit in the passport document for the chandelier, indicating the purpose of its conductors and the stages of their connection.

Standard color code:

  • White or brown conductor - phase;
  • Blue - zero;
  • Yellow-green - grounding.

The connection is made to the wire of the same color on the chandelier. In its absence, the bare wire is carefully insulated so as not to accidentally short it out.

Before starting work, the switch keys should be switched to the “off” position. The input machine on the panel must also be in the off state. Preparing the wires for testing is to open them. The luminaire is connected with the power off. After the preparatory work, power is supplied to the wires.

Step-by-step instructions for ringing wires with a tester:

We connect correctly

After determining the electrical wires, you will again need to turn off the power to install the lighting fixture. When twisting wires, the use of PVC tape is undesirable due to its drying out over time and, accordingly, a decrease in its insulating characteristics.

When twisting the electrical wires into one group and winding the protective cap, they may oxidize over time and heat up. Soldering of such connections is recommended, which guarantees normal contact and no overheating.

When connecting electrical wires from a lighting fixture to ceiling electrical wires from a switch, twisting rules are not allowed. This will require the use of terminal boxes. In this case, a problem is possible when a twist of several electrical wires does not enter the hole. The solution is to solder a copper conductor with a cross section of 0.5 sq. mm. The connection is insulated, and the free end of the conductor 10 cm long is inserted into.

After inserting all the electrical wires from the lighting fixture into the terminal block and tightening the screws, the chandelier is raised under the ceiling. After attaching the chandelier to the terminal block, the electrical wires are connected in the required order: zeros - one opposite the other, phases to phases - arbitrarily.

Chandelier installation

Lighting connection options depend on:

  • the number of output electrical wires from the lighting device;
  • the number of output electrical wires from the ceiling;
  • number of keys on the room switch.

With two wires

Connecting two contacts of a lighting device to two wires:

  • Zero contact connection from a chandelier with a neutral wire in the ceiling, which comes out of .
  • Phase connection, which is brown or white wire, with a phase in the ceiling leading to the switch.

Connecting two chandelier wires to three pins:

  1. Three ceiling contacts - the result of the presence of grounding or connection to a two-gang switch.
  2. An indicator screwdriver is used to determine the common wire. When you touch two wires, the indicator lights up - the third wire will be common.
  3. When the indicator glows on one wire, it will be common. Such a check requires that both keys of the switch are in the working position.
  4. The wires are connected with terminal clamps. The conductor is fixed in the clamp and any ceiling outlet.
  5. After the connection is made to the terminal pairs lived from the lighting device.

With three or more wires

Connection from three wires on the chandelier to two ceiling contacts:

  • In this case, only 1 option is possible.– Simultaneous ignition of all bulbs.
  • All zeros of the lighting device are connected to each other and their connection to the ceiling zero output.
  • The phases are connected in the same way.

Connection from three wires on the chandelier to three ceiling contacts:

  1. This option is for the switch with two keys.
  2. Marking of three ceiling wires: phase - L1; phase - L2; zero - N. The phases are designed to enter the switch keys, and zero - directly to the chandelier.
  3. The wires from the lamps should be divided into two sections, each of which is connected to only one of the wires to supply a phase through it.
  4. Be sure to connect both sections to zero. Then, pressing one of the switch keys, one group of lamps will light, pressing the second - another.

Connection from three wires on the chandelier to four ceiling pins:

  • An additional fourth wire can be ground, which performs a protective function. Its marking is PE.
  • If the chandelier has a yellow-green ground pin, it is twisted with the ceiling ground. In its absence in the chandelier, the ceiling ground contact is isolated.

Connecting a chandelier to a single-gang switch

If you need to connect a multi-track chandelier through a switch with one key, two options are possible:

  • The disassembled lighting device and its assembly is carried out for a single-gang switch. Then all electrical wires are connected from the central contacts of the device cartridges and they are connected through the terminal block to the phase one coming from the single-gang switch.
  • The lighting device is already assembled to a two-gang switch, then the connection of all electrical wires from the central contacts of the cartridges of the device is carried out in the terminal block to the phase single-key switch.

In the presence of a single-key switch and two ceiling electrical wires, among which are phase and zero. The phases of the lighting device are connected to each other and to the phase of the electrical wiring, the zeros are connected in the same way.

In the presence of a single-key switch and three contacts, the purpose of the third electrical wire is determined. After turning on the switch, the voltage is checked on all electrical wires. If there is a phase on two electric wires, it is necessary to replace the switch with a two-gang one.

If there is a phase on only one contact and yellow-green insulation on the third, then both phase wiring of the chandelier is connected to the phase contact of the electrical wiring, and the ground is isolated and removed.

Connecting a chandelier to a two-gang switch

The connection of multi-track chandeliers to such a switch is made according to the same principle. All contacts from the chandelier are divided into 3 groups: 2 phase and 1 zero. First, all zero electrical wires are combined and twisted. The rest are randomly divided into 2 groups, which are also carefully twisted. The resulting 2 groups are connected to the ceiling phases.

Following the example of a three-arm chandelier, it is possible to connect in two ways - with and without grounding. Without the use of grounding, the main steps would be:

  1. Electrical assembly. 2 contacts are connected to the bulb holder - 0, connected on the side, and a phase conductor, connected in the center of the cartridge. The light bulb horns are attached to the concave base of the lighting device, which connects the electrical wires in accordance with the two-gang switch.
  2. Connecting a lighting fixture to a two-gang switch whose keys determine the number of lamps that light up when they are pressed. By themselves, the zeros on the side of the cartridge and the phases from its middle have neither 0 nor a positive charge. The zero supply is not carried out through the switch, but directly. All zeros from the lamp sockets form the basis of the chandelier in the form of a plexus. The phases are distributed in the luminaire frame into 2 groups. Both groups and the zero plexus are connected in turn to each of the three electrical wires of the central cable that goes up through the trunk of the chandelier. The phases go to the phases of the electrical wires of the junction box, and zero to zero.
  3. Connecting the electrical wires in the junction box, from which there are three electrical wires to the switch, and the same number to the chandelier. The distributor itself is powered by a two-wire electrical wire. The electrical wire that carries the positive charge to the distributor is connected to the contact from the switch. And the electrical wire leading from the distributor to the chandelier is connected to zero in the distributor. Groups of phases are connected in turn with electrical wires from the switch.
  4. Connection of electrical wires in a switch with two buttons and three contacts - on the right, left and in the middle. A phase conductor under constant voltage goes to the central one. The rest are connected to the phase groups of the distribution of light bulbs. Each key contributes to the closing of the central contact and the ignition of the corresponding number of lamps.

When mounted with grounding in the distributor, the third protective electrical conductor comes out of it and is connected to the metal frame of the luminaire.

Connecting chandeliers with a remote control

The operation of halogen lamps is carried out from 12 V or 24 V, which explains the installation of step-down transformers in each of them. The assembly of the circuit has already been made and it is only necessary to install it. Only 2 electrical wires connected to the ceiling contacts are free. Connection is optional.

In the presence of a remote control, in addition to the transformers, there is a control unit. Two conductors with ceiling contacts are connected in a similar way. And the antenna in the form of a thin conductor coming from the other side will facilitate communication between the remote control and the control unit. It remains in the same form inside the cap.

The appearance of only one phase of the voltage is possible between the phase and the working zero. If everything was connected correctly, the common wire of the lamp is connected to 0, a positive charge is supplied through the switch to two contacts.

If there is a connection error, the common electrical wire is connected to the phase, and 0 is supplied through the switch to the remaining wires. The lamp will be lit, but if you want to change the bulb, there is a risk of electric shock when the switch is off.

If it is necessary to simultaneously turn on / off the lamp with two keys for two contacts that come out of the ceiling, it is possible to install a jumper or their mutual connection in the terminal block.

The chandelier not only complements the overall design of the room, but also serves as a source of light in the dark. However, the maximum possible level of illumination is not used so often, is it? For the most part, there is a need to use the economy mode, when only a part of the lamps are functioning.

For this purpose, the chandelier is connected to a double switch, which allows you to adjust the intensity of lighting in the room. Do you want to install the switching device yourself, but do not know how to do it correctly?

We will help you deal with all the nuances of this process - the article provides diagrams for connecting the device to a switch with two keys, and discusses the main mistakes that beginners make. The correct connection of the wires will allow you to control, providing comfortable lighting.

The material of the article is provided with photographs, diagrams and recommendations in video format on how to correctly connect the chandelier on your own. Having studied the basic rules and installation schemes, you can get to work.

Work with electrical wiring must be carried out in compliance with safety regulations and with a clear sequence of actions.

First of all, the rules relate to de-energizing the wiring in the process of fitting and, mounting the working mechanism of the switch, connecting conductors to the terminals and other actions.

The main aspect that you should focus on when doing home electrical work is contact with bare wires. All actions in this case must be performed after turning off the general switch and using special tools

However, to determine the desired wire, the presence of power is still needed, therefore, in the work it is necessary to be as careful as possible and perform all actions only with special tools with high-quality insulation of the handles.

The only negative of the Vago terminal blocks is that they are not treated with quartz paste, which protects the contacts from oxidation. However, this problem can be solved by acquiring such a composition and self-syringing it into a clamp

As a result, 3 connection nodes are obtained at the output: the phase of the first and second groups of lamps is L1 and L2, the common neutral node is N. Given the marking of the wires, they must be connected to the corresponding lines on the ceiling.

There are two phase conductors coming out of the lamp (L1, L2), and there will be only one neutral wire (N) and it is connected to the second contact of the cartridge

At the final stage, it is necessary to lay all the wiring in the block of the chandelier bowl and install it. Fastening is carried out in one of the ways: hung on a hook or screwed with screws. Next, the decorative plugs of the lamp are tightened.

Using the ground wire

When arranging electrical communications in new homes in accordance with generally accepted standards, a ground wire will be present in the wiring.

In such rooms, when installing a chandelier, you can find that 4 wires come out of the ceiling: two phases from the switch, zero and ground.

The marking of the ground wire is carried out by a combination of yellow with a green stripe. In a single-phase network, it will be the third residential, in a three-phase network - the fifth

In most models of chandeliers with two groups of lamps and metal parts, a terminal block is provided in the package, through which the ground connection is made.

During the installation of the lighting device, you need to pay attention to this and connect the wire.

Connecting a halogen lamp

Chandeliers do not always work on 220 V AC - these can be products designed for AC voltage of 6, 12 or 24 V. Therefore, in the second case, you will need a step-down transformer.

Sometimes the manufacturer in each model of a halogen lighting fixture builds in special transformers to lower the current.

The diagram shows the principle of connecting a chandelier with an electronic transformer. In this variation of the lamp there is a controller unit. The connection plan is shown on the back of its case. In the diagram: PE - ground, N - zero, L - phase

Chandeliers, which include a remote control, can be of various modifications: with halogen, LED or incandescent lamps.

There are models and combined type. Such a device is complicated by the presence of a radio control unit. In fact, this controller is a wireless device, which is controlled by a remote control or a standard key switch.

The connection of such a lighting device is carried out similarly to the previous model, however, one more wire will be added here, the thinnest of all.

This is the antenna through which the communicating actions of the console and controller are reproduced. It remains unchanged inside the glass of the chandelier.

Conclusions and useful video on the topic

The whole process of preparing the chandelier for connection and directly connecting the double switch to the power supply is described in the video:

Inexperienced craftsmen quite often make mistakes in the wiring process, which ones and how to avoid them, see the video:

If you correctly reproduce all the stages of installation and follow the diagram, you can protect yourself from unpleasant consequences during the direct operation of the lighting device. Moreover, it will be possible to create a unique light atmosphere in the room, adjusting it to your needs.

Hello, dear readers and guests of the Electrician's Notes website.

The other day I was replacing an old chandelier with a new five-arm one.

The house was panel, so I want to pay special attention to this, because. there is a small nuance that I encountered once again. But first things first.

First you need to take care of personal electrical safety. We turn off the necessary circuit breaker, on the supply wires at the chandelier or single-pole indicator, and only after that we start work.

You will say that to do this work, it is enough to turn off both keys of the switch. I answer, what if some one initially connected it incorrectly and the switch switches not phases, but zeros? Moreover, according to the customer, the two-gang switch was faulty. But I will talk about this at the end of the article.

We bite off the wires and remove the old chandelier. The photo shows that on the power wires, but on the wires going directly to the chandelier, it is available: two yellow wires are phases from different switch keys, and the blue wire is zero. Now we will not remember the marking, because. it still needs to be checked.

To install the mounting plate for a new chandelier, you need to dismantle the decorative plug and hook. We slightly hollow it out, it falls out along with the hook-holder (by the way, it is also plastic).

And now we have such a view on the ceiling (at the beginning of the article I talked about the nuance). This is not the first panel house where I meet with similar "technological" holes. When installing a new chandelier, be sure to hide this horror.

But here a problem arises. It consists in the fact that if you drill holes for the mounting plate from the edge of the plate, then it (the edge) can break off (crumble) when drilling with a puncher. So I had to slightly shift the installation of the chandelier in order to drill holes not at the edge of the slab, but a little further. In this case, it must be taken into account that the base of the chandelier completely covers this hole. If it is not possible to completely close it, then you can carefully plaster it.

Dealing with wires coming out of the ceiling

Electrical wiring in panel houses is laid either in special channels (voids) or at the joints between the plates. Most often, in the ceiling slab (floor slab) there are channels running parallel to each other at a certain distance. In my case, the wires lie directly on the surface of the ceiling plate. It all depends on the panel house series.

The electrical wiring is aluminum and is made with a three-core wire APPV (3x2.5).

And now we need to deal with the wires coming out of the ceiling, namely, find two phase (L1, L2) and one zero (N). This can be done in several ways. I'll show you the simplest one.

Make sure that the bare ends of the wires do not touch each other, to do this, carefully spread them apart.

  • phase from the first switch key (L1)
  • phase from the second switch key (L2)
  • zero (N)

We turn on the disconnected circuit breaker in the apartment or floor shield. Then we turn on the first key of the switch and using a single-pole indicator or voltage indicator "Contact-55EM" we find the phase (L1), which is connected to the first key of the switch. You can find out how to use these devices at the following links:

Then turn off the first key and turn on the second. Similarly, we are looking for the phase (L2), which is connected to the second key.

Do not forget to first make sure that your pointer is working properly by checking it on live parts that are obviously energized.

Thus, we have found two phases - L1 and L2. We have the third wire left - this is zero N.

How to connect a chandelier through a two-gang switch

Here is a wiring diagram for a chandelier consisting of five lamps.

  • phase L1 (orange)
  • phase L2 (yellow)
  • zero N (blue)

We deal with the wires of the chandelier

First of all, we need to deal with the scheme of the chandelier itself, i.e. those wires that come out of its base.

In my example, each chandelier bulb has its own wires coming out. In total, 10 wires are removed from the base of the chandelier: 5 phase (brown) and 5 zero (blue). This is clearly visible in the photo below.

The advantage of such a chandelier is that a combination of light bulbs can be made as you wish, for example, you can connect only one light bulb to the first group, and the rest of the lamps to the second group.

We agreed with the customer that the first group of lamps will include two light bulbs, and the second group - the remaining three.

I will make all wire connections using two- and three-wire. By the way, a new 221 series was recently released - it is more convenient and compact.

So, we take two brown wires, preferably not nearby lamps, and connect them together. This will be our first twist and we will call it - L1. Then we take the three remaining brown wires and also twist them together. This will be the second twist, which we will assign the designation - L2. Here's what should work.

We insert the first (L1) and second (L2) twists into the corresponding Vago terminals.

Five blue wires are twisted together in any order (2 + 3) and connected to the three-wire Vago terminal. This will be our zero terminal (N).

It turned out the following.

It remains to connect the supply wires to the Vago terminals in accordance with the accepted marking.

You will now say that the Wago 222 series are designed for connecting only copper wires. I know, but I deliberately use them for connections and aluminum wires, due to the fact that the terminal's current-carrying rail is tin-plated, not copper. This means that there is no direct aluminum-copper contact.

Well, I like the terminals of this series.

The only thing is that they do not have a quartz-based paste with technical petroleum jelly, which would protect the compound from oxidation, destroying the formed oxide film on aluminum. But this is not a problem, you can purchase Wago Alu-Plus paste separately and syringe directly into the terminal block.

We carefully lay the wires at the base of the chandelier (there is not much space there) and install it on the bracket. Tighten decorative nuts. Chandelier installed.

We insert lamps with a power of 25 (W) of warm white color with an E14 base into the CFL chandelier.

At the beginning of the article, I said that the customer had a faulty two-gang switch. In his words, "with a light touch on the switch, he turned on and off the lamps several times in a row."

I removed the old switch and the cause of its malfunction was obvious.

At the switch of contacts, the latch of fastening to the switch body has broken off. In the photo below - a broken latch on the left, a whole one on the right.

The switch was removed in a place with an overlay, but should be removed separately.

This malfunction was the result of the “chaotic” operation of the two-gang switch. The switch was not fixed (fixed) to the case on the right side, the pressure on the contacts was weakened, and sometimes it was not there at all. When the right key was turned on, the movable part of the contact was not pressed against the fixed part - the contact disappeared and burned.

Instead of the old switch, I installed a new one with a ceramic base from Powerman (China).

Something lately I often come across this brand, well, for example, recently, and he was the same “Powerman”.

And now you can check the work of the new chandelier. Works properly!

P.S. I hope that after reading this article you will not have any questions about how to connect a chandelier with a two-gang switch. Well, if they arise, then feel free to ask through the comment form or feedback. Thank you for your attention.

The chandelier is one of the main lighting devices that all Russians install today. It can be connected to one or more switches. How is the chandelier connected to a double switch, what is used for this and what safety precautions are observed? More on this later.

To connect a luminaire to a double type of switch, you must strictly follow the rules and observe safety precautions. In this case, it is not necessary to study the documentation that is intended for professional electricians. You just need to know that all tools for performing electrical work must be well insulated. Work must be carried out only on a de-energized network.

Tools for the job

To perform work, you need to take a straight and Phillips screwdriver, a side cutter, pliers, a sharp knife, a measuring digital or pointer device, an indicator screwdriver and insulating tape.

Note! A knife is needed in order to isolate a single-core cable element, side cutter or pliers. An indicator screwdriver is needed to detect the phase.

Conductor marking

To facilitate ringing and eliminate errors, you need to use colored insulating cable markings. The generally accepted standard is the marking of the conductor element with a green stripe. In no case should a source that has a green color be used to connect devices. This source is used to ground the contact.

Zero or neutral source has blue or light blue wires. Charged conductor elements have different colors. Problems occur when working with wiring that has been operating on the network for a long time. Sometimes the conductor insulation was the same in the veins, for this reason, a continuity test is necessary before starting work.

Conductor marking scheme

Wire ringing

The first step is to check if the connection is correct. A screwdriver with an indicator shows the charge on some source when the switch is not working. If it is not possible to search for a charge, this means that the switch is connected incorrectly or there is a malfunction in part of the switchboard.

Wiring diagram for a two-gang type switch

Several elements can go from the ceiling covering, one of which is a phase and the other is zero. According to this wiring diagram, you can connect all the lamps. If three cables come out of it, then the first and next is the phase, and the third is zero. According to this scheme, you can distribute the connection of lamps in the chandelier. There is such a moment when three elements come out of the ceiling, but there is no way to distribute the inclusion of a chandelier. The third has a yellow-green color and is considered zero.

Wiring diagram for a three-gang switch

To connect the source to a switch that has two keys, you need to understand where the two, three wires of the chandelier or the five-arm switch are uncharged, and where the charged conductor is. To determine a common conductor, you do not need much knowledge, it has a different color from others. This means that the other two have several lighting sections. Then zero is connected to a common conductor, and each section, which has different phases of the conductors, goes through a two-key type of switch.

Safety

When making the connection, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the simple safety precautions of how to connect a 5-light chandelier. According to her, you can not touch the bare types of cables that are located on the ceiling. When connecting the chandelier to the wiring, it is necessary to turn off the smoke shield input machines. Further, careful insulation of bare wires is required, a careful study of the instructions for the device.

Important! It is also worth figuring out how to connect a chandelier to 2 switches safely. It is necessary to exclude access of children to the place of work. At the time of electric shock, you must immediately turn off the network. It is advisable to work with a partner.

Carrying out work in rubber gloves as a guarantee of safety during the connection of lighting equipment

As a result, in order to connect the chandelier to a double switch, you should prepare the necessary tools, look at the wire markings and find the ones you need with a voltmeter and ringing. At the same time, it is important to observe safety precautions and carefully study such an element as an electrical circuit for connecting a chandelier to two switches or several switches.

When buying a new lamp, few people think about how to connect the chandelier, how many drives are there and what kind of switch is needed? In the store, the seller gave recommendations on how to care for the lighting fixture, read the manufacturer's advertisement by heart, and on this the purchase is considered complete. But, having come home, having unpacked the lighting device, wires of different colors are found. How to be? What to do?

After all, the store said that only two lamps can be turned on in the chandelier, and not all five, and it is connected to a single-gang switch. This article covers all connection options, as well as security measures.

Safety

Before you start connecting the chandelier to the mains, install the switch, you need to familiarize yourself with the safety precautions in working with electricity. To do this, you do not need to study the Talmuds of "physics on electricity", you should familiarize yourself with the rules:

  1. In all used tools for working with electrical appliances, as well as for electrical wiring, the handles are insulated.
  2. To carry out work, the electricity in the entire room is turned off on the panel. To do this, turn off the light switch is not enough. It is required to turn off the plugs on the electrical panel (meter in a private house), but if there are no buttons there, the plugs are unscrewed.
  3. The switch for the lamp is installed in the break of the "phase" wire.

If you follow these rules, then nothing will threaten life.

Checking wires with an indicator

How to recognize wires?

All wires are available in several colors. This greatly facilitates the work of an electrician, and gives a hint to a beginner.

Common Standard:

  • Grounding - yellow wire with a light green stripe (ground).

Attention! It is not used to connect electrical devices. This is only grounding (so that during the operation of the electrical appliance, the current does not pierce with “small trembling”).

  • Blue (blue) wire - zero.
  • Phase colors are colors other than those listed.

In houses and apartments with old wiring, all cables are the same, there was no grounding. To determine the type, you should make a call.

What threatens to swap the phase and zero?

There is an opinion from people who consider themselves professionals (I installed 1 socket in the house) that when installing the switch, there is no difference in connecting the wires, because electricity does not enter the lamp through open contacts. This is not true. You should know exactly what is the phase, and which wire goes "zero". With a broken zero, no electric current flows, but there is a phase current in all cables. What threatens to defeat a person with electric current. Otherwise, fluorescent lighting fixtures, as well as economy lamps, flicker or dimly shine with phase current.

How to connect wires?

Twisting is a very laborious business. If it is done incorrectly, a remake is made. Therefore, you should do it correctly, as well as firmly isolate it. If there are a lot of such twists, and there is a lot of voltage in the network or poor contact of the connection is heated, then the electrical tape may burn out soon, which will lead to a short circuit. Therefore, when twisting the wires, it is necessary to press them well and insulate them.

Terminal blocks are now used. They have proven themselves as fire-fighting elements. With their help, four or more twists are connected. One of them is WAGO. No tools are required for connection, installation takes place in a short time. To begin with, the levers open, insert the wires there and close the lever. In this case, the connection will be reliable, fireproof. The purchased new chandelier is disassembled, the quality of the blocks and screws is checked. If necessary, the screws must be well tightened. Especially if the chandelier is made in China.

Terminal blocks are the most convenient to use

Required tool for mounting the chandelier

In order to connect the chandelier to the wires on the ceiling, you will need tools:

  1. Three different screwdrivers: flat-end, curly, indicator.
  2. Side cutter and pliers.
  3. Knife - must be sharpened.
  4. Voltmeter.
  5. Insulating tape.

A knife is required to expose a single-core wire, because pliers will damage or break the core itself. The exposure is done with a sharp knife blade in the same way as a pencil is sharpened. If burrs remain - this does not threaten anything.

The indicator is needed to find the phase. In such a screwdriver, the tip is made for tightening screws. You do not need to do this, because it is impractical and will soon break.

There are 2 types of measuring instruments: with a digital screen and with arrows. Preference is given to digital ones, since their readings are the most accurate. Digital devices shockproof, have overload protection. The pointer device is used in a horizontal position. Its advantage is that it shows the measurement without additional power (accumulators, batteries).

Attention! In all devices, the AC range is not more than 500-600 watts.

To connect the lighting device to the mains, you need to follow a step-by-step algorithm of actions with detailed instructions.

Preparatory work: ringing - phase detection on the ceiling

At this stage of preparation, it will be clarified what to do with the ground wire and how to distinguish between phase and zero on the ceiling? How to connect a lot of wires from a chandelier with cables on the ceiling? Connecting a lighting fixture with your own hands is a neat business, requiring minimal knowledge of electricity.

An indicator will help you find the right cable

Ground wire

If the wiring has already been done on the ceiling (the wiring is done, say, under drywall in a frame base), then there is “zero” among them, the rest are phase and earth.

Attention! Wiring with grounding is made in new buildings and in rooms with repairs.

The ground wire is yellow-green. According to the international standard, it is designated PE. It connects to the same color wire on the chandelier. You can’t just leave the wire like this, as this can lead to a short circuit. If there is grounding in the chandelier, and old wiring on the ceiling, then you need to make PE insulation in the chandelier. Grounding insulation is carried out on the ceiling, if it is not in the chandelier. Insulation is done neatly and efficiently with insulating tape. It is unacceptable that the edge of the tape sticks out or peels off.

Proper insulation

We are looking for phases and zero

All wires are checked - you need to determine where the phase and zero are. You can't rely on just the color scheme for several reasons. Firstly, it is not known (in many cases) how the wires were connected to the junction box - the qualification of an electrician or a neighbor; secondly, the color scheme can change, and if a person is sure that the phase is red in color, then this opinion may be erroneous.

If only three wires come out of the ceiling, a switch with 2 keys is installed, then there can be two power wires for each section of the switch, and one zero is common. Ringing is done using a multimeter (tester), indicator.

To call you need to do the following:

  1. Put on shoes with rubber soles. Be in a dry area. Hands and feet should also be dry. Water is a current conductor.
  2. The voltage is turned on on the meter or shield, and the switch is set to the “on” mode.
  3. Carefully so that the wires do not touch each other (so as not to burn all the wiring in the house), you should touch each one in turn with the indicator, the edge of the screwdriver. If the screwdriver ignites, there is voltage.
  4. When connecting a measuring device, the tester will show, with an arrow or numbers on the display, what voltage is in the wire.
  5. To be sure (if the memory is bad), the phase is marked with a marker or everything is written down on paper - what color.
  6. After the phase is detected, the switch is turned off, and then the apartment is de-energized on the electrical panel or on the meter.

To determine the wires by the tester, you need to put the switch on the device on “volts”, select the scale “more than 220 V”. After that, carefully touch the probes, you need to hold the handle, and not the bare iron, to the wiring in stages, and not all at once. Two power wires between themselves do not give a ringing. If there is such a pair, then these are phase wires. And the third "zero". Further, each wire, the intended phase, is required to be connected with probes to zero. 220 V will appear on the tester screen. The cables should be marked with a marker on the insulation or the colors should be written down. Working with the indicator is easier: lit - phase, no - zero (indicated by the letter N). Phase - the letter L.

If there are only 2 wires in the ceiling, one of them is definitely a phase. The switch is single-key, and if there is a second one, then it is non-working.

Chandelier connection diagrams

The market offers a large variety of chandeliers that amaze with their beauty and originality.

  • Chandelier with one cartridge.
  • With rotating platform.
  • With a large number of halogen and LED sources.
  • There are models with built-in dimmers, drivers that allow you to turn on the lighting device with a remote control. And also with the help of the remote control, the brightness of the light and the sequence of operation of the lamps change.

But, despite such an extensive classification of chandelier models, they will all be connected according to the schemes below.

One of the main nuances is the correct connection of cables on the ceiling with wires from the chandelier. With the necessary tools, the connection is made quickly by a person who has no experience in working with electrical devices.

Chandelier connection diagram

If the switch is single, and the chandelier is two-wire (for example, arion or sconce), then you need to follow the steps according to the chandelier-ceiling 2x2 scheme. That is, there is a two-core cable on the ceiling. This option is simple and fast. After the phase and zero are determined, the power supply is turned off. The neutral wire on the chandelier (you can find this out from the instructions for the lighting fixture, by color) must be connected to the desired “zero” on the ceiling. It is also done with the "phase". All connected wires must be properly insulated. There are no difficulties, installation is carried out quickly.

If the chandelier is five-arm or three-arm, and the switch is with one key, then it follows:

  1. Consider all the wires in the chandelier. There are 2 wires coming out of each horn. This means that a phase and zero are connected to each. Then all the lights will turn on.
  2. Preparation of wires for connection with the general wiring of the house. Each wire on the chandelier is exposed by 3 cm. Since they are very thin, everything should be done carefully. Further, all wires of the same color (say, blue) are taken and twisted into one group. It turned out twisting one core from each cartridge. The same twist is done with the remaining wires of a different color.
  3. It turned out 2 twists - zero will be suitable for one, and phase for the second. After that, the indicator checks the closure of the cartridge-twisting circuit.
  4. Two strands of wires are fixed to 2 wires on the ceiling. Be sure to use electrical tape.

Attention! Do not connect aluminum and copper wires. These 2 metals oxidize over time and the contact will disappear. There are special adapters for this.

Connecting a chandelier to a single-gang switch

The chandelier has 2 wires, the ceiling has 3 wires (double switch)

There are 2 options here: the third wire is grounding or the second phase, with a 2-key switch. In such a situation, you need to do this:

  1. Be sure to make a call using the indicator. For this operation, the network must be electric, and the switch is turned on. Otherwise, the indicator will not show the second phase. Indicator behavior:
  • The first case is when, when touched with a screwdriver, 2 wires illuminate the indicator, and the third one does not light up. This is a common wire.
  • The second case - one is lit, and the other 2 are not. The wire that gives the glow is common.

If there is no indicator, then any 2 cables are taken from the ceiling and connected to the chandelier. Turn on the power on the panel and the switch. If the lamps light up, then the installation is proceeding correctly. And you don't need to redo it.

  1. Designate the phases and zero, if they are of the same color, turn off the power to the meter.
  2. After that, a common wire is fixed in the terminal and one of the remaining two to choose from. The wires from the chandelier are also connected. Exposure must be insulated.
  3. If there is a desire for the chandelier to light up from any of the two keys on the switch, a jumper is placed.

After complete isolation, the power supply is turned on and the operation is checked.

If the switch is two-key, and the chandelier is five-lamp, then:

  1. In the chandelier, 2 wires come out of each horn with a lamp.
  2. Everything is collected in one bundle and divided into groups (double): 2 feeders, 1 zero. One color - 1 group. The rest of the outgoing people are divided into random groups.
  3. All groups of wires are twisted with those indicated on the ceiling.

Connecting a chandelier with three wires to a multi-key switch

Wiring diagram for a multi-key switch

If the chandelier is two-arm and more, then connection options are possible:

  • If you turn on the switch, all the lights will turn on.
  • With the help of one key, a group of light bulbs on a chandelier is turned on (for example, the lower cartridges in a multi-tiered lamp).
  • With the help of one key, 2-3 lamps are lit, but not all.

There are 2 wires on the ceiling, which means that only the first option is possible - all the lamps will light up at the same time. To connect a chandelier with three wires to 2 on the ceiling, you should carefully study the technical characteristics of the chandelier. Basically, by the manufacturer, all the threads in the chandelier are connected in pairs. In this case, the connection takes place in an elementary way: finding the phase and zero, and connecting the chandelier.

If in the chandelier each wire comes from the ceiling, then all the wires are connected in parallel by installing an additional jumper wire.

Scheme for connecting a chandelier with several wires to a three-core cable on the ceiling

If it is required to turn on the lamps in groups in a three-lamp chandelier (five-cartridge carol), then the connection is made according to the diagram. At the same time, a two- or three-gang switch is installed. To do this, on the ceiling, a common wire, zero, phase in a three-core cable is determined by the indicator. At the same time, a switch for at least 2 keys is installed for everyone. 1 wire of their pair, coming from each chandelier horn, is connected to the common wire.

There will be 2 threads that join the free wires from the pairs from the cartridges.

Attention! Before installing a multi-horn chandelier to a multi-key (triple) switch, you need to carefully study the lighting device, its technical characteristics and instructions for use.

Connecting a chandelier to a switch block with a socket

In some cases, it is required to install an outlet and a switch nearby (this is often found in the kitchen). These two points change to one - the block "socket-switch" by anam. In this case, the switch has from one to four keys. Acting according to the scheme, which indicates the usual connection of the chandelier to the switch, installation will be quick. There is one wire in the circuit that comes out of "zero" and enters the socket outlet. The scheme is classical, but in practice, zero and phase are often reversed.

LED chandelier

It stands out because a typical spotlight contains additional elements for uninterrupted operation, laid down by the manufacturer. Such elements are: dimmers, drivers, converters. The light is controlled by the remote control.

A passport is attached to the chandelier indicating the options for operation, technical characteristics, as well as with an electrical diagram for connecting it to the mains. When connecting a chandelier, precise work is required, according to the scheme given in the passport, otherwise it will not work correctly or burn out. After connecting the lighting device to the network, adjustment and testing is carried out using a switch and a remote control.
