Southern Military District (SMD) - military-administrative unit of the Armed Forces in the southwest of Russia

The district headquarters is located in Rostov-on-Don.

The district is intended for the defense of the south of the country.

The Southern Military District (SMD) was formed on October 4, 2010 during the military reform of 2008-2010 on the basis of the Red Banner North Caucasus Military District (SKVO). It also included the Red Banner Black Sea Fleet, the Red Banner Caspian Flotilla and the 4th Red Banner Air Force and Air Defense Command.

Southern Military District troops are deployed within the administrative boundaries of two federal districts (Southern and North Caucasian) on the territory of the following constituent entities of the Russian Federation: Republic of Adygea, Republic of Dagestan, Republic of Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, Republic of Kalmykia, Karachay-Cherkess Republic, Republic of Crimea, Republic of North Ossetia - Alania, Chechen Republic, Krasnodar, Stavropol territories, Astrakhan, Volgograd and Rostov regions, the city of Sevastopol.

In addition, in accordance with international treaties, three military bases in the district are located outside Russia: in Abkhazia, Armenia and South Ossetia.

All military formations of types and branches of troops stationed in the territory of the district are subordinate to the commander of the Southern Military District, with the exception of the Strategic Missile Forces, Airborne Forces, and other units of central subordination. In addition, under its operational subordination are military formations of the Federal Service of the National Guard Troops, the Border Service of the FSB, as well as units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and other ministries and departments of Russia performing tasks in the territory of the district

The Southern Military District was significantly strengthened between 2013 and 2016. Four new divisions and nine brigades, twenty-two regiments were created, including two missile brigades equipped with Iskander-M complexes. In 2016, the formation of the promising 150th motorized rifle Idritsk-Berlin Order of Kutuzov division with headquarters in Novocherkassk began. An opinion was also expressed on the need to recreate the previously existing 42nd Guards Motorized Rifle Evpatoria Red Banner Division on the basis of the 17th, 18th and 19th motorized rifle brigades.

The ground-based air defense grouping on the territory of the Southern Military District includes only 3 anti-aircraft missile regiments, and one of them is, in fact, similar to the only anti-aircraft missile brigade of ground forces in the district with the Buk air defense system. This air defense system is not suitable for solving the country's air defense problems. On the other hand, one of the two “real” anti-aircraft missile regiments of the Southern Military District (near Novorossiysk) received the S-400 air defense system. In addition, in the Southern Military District (in the Astrakhan region) there is an air defense combat training center in Ashuluk, where there are two combat-ready S-300P divisions.

The Southern Military District Air Force includes 100 Su-24 front-line bombers, more than 80 Su-25 attack aircraft, and about 100 fighters (MiG-29, Su-27, Su-30). There is a very powerful group of army aviation, which includes more than 100 combat helicopters (at least 10 Ka-52, more than 30 Mi-28N, at least 50 Mi-24/35), 12 heavy transport Mi-26, more than 60 multi-purpose Mi-8 /17.

The Black Sea Fleet includes two submarines (one each, Project 877 and 641B), the flagship guards missile cruiser "Moscow" Project 1164, the large anti-submarine ship "Kerch" Project 1134B, three patrol ships (one each Project 01090, 1135 and 1135M), five small anti-submarine ships (MPK Project 1124M and one Project 1124), four small missile ships (two each Project 1239 and 12341), five missile boats (one Project 12417, four Project 12411), eleven minesweepers, seven large landing ships (three Project 1171, four Project 775).

The Caspian flotilla includes two patrol ships of Project 1661 (the second of them, Dagestan, is armed with the Kalibr-NK missile system capable of striking surface and ground targets), three small artillery ships of Project 21630, one missile boat Project 12412, three missile boats Project 206MR and two Project 1241 (one of which was converted into an artillery boat), four armored boats Project 1204, seven minesweepers, six landing boats.

It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Political events are developing in such a way that Russia simply needs strong Armed Forces.

In 2014, Crimea was annexed by Russia. The tense truce in the Donbass, constantly on the verge of breakdown due to incessant provocations, constantly forces the Armed Forces, including the Southern Military District, to be on high alert. The article describes the current state of this district, its command and composition.

History of the Southern Military District

In 1918, the North Caucasus Military District was established, and the Army of the North Caucasus became known as the Eleventh Army. The following year, it was created here and headed by S.M. Budyonny.

In the twenties, military educational institutions were created on this territory. The district was replenished with new weapons and equipment and by the beginning of the war it had become one of the most advanced districts of the Soviet Union.

In 1942, the district was abolished, and the department was transformed into the department of the Transcaucasian Front.

In peacetime, the Don, Stavropol and Kuban military districts were created on the territory of the abolished North Caucasus Military District. The Don District began to be called in its old way - North Caucasus, with headquarters located in Rostov-on-Don.

The troops of this military district played a major role in the counter-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus. Forty-three military personnel then became Heroes of the Russian Federation.

In 2008, the North Caucasus Military District conducted an operation to force Georgia to peace. It lasted five days. As a result, the people were saved and the aggressor was defeated. Many were then awarded orders and insignia, and Major D.V. Vetchinov (posthumously), Lieutenant Colonel K.A. Terman, captain Yu.P. Yakovlev and Sergeant S.A. Mylnikov were awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.

In 2009, Russia was formed in Abkhazia and South Ossetia and became part of the military district.

Military reform

At the end of 2010, four military districts were formed instead of six - Central, Western, Eastern and Southern. The latter is located within the boundaries of the North Caucasus Military District, which includes the Black Sea Fleet and the Caspian Flotilla, the Fourth Air Force Command and Air Defense, the 49th and 58th Armies.

Location of the Southern Military District

At the moment, the troops of the Southern Military District are located on the territory of the Southern, North Caucasian and fourteen constituent entities of the Russian Federation. Outside Russia - in Armenia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia - there are military bases that are also part of the Southern Military District. The headquarters of the Southern Military District is located in Rostov-on-Don.

Southern Military District today

The Southern Military District is the smallest in size compared to other military districts of Russia. But at the same time, the most located on Russian territory are Chechnya and Ingushetia, and abroad - Georgia, Nagorno-Karabakh and Ukraine.

And if in Chechnya and Ingushetia, within the country, and in Georgia and Nagorno-Karabakh, the conflicts have now practically ceased, then in Ukraine the situation is only getting worse.

In 2014, Crimea became part of Russia, and since then tensions from NATO and the United States have been particularly acute. They have conducted exercises in the Black Sea more than once, but each time they received worthy responses from Russian troops.

The main function performed by the troops of this military district is maintaining security on the southern borders of Russia.

Lieutenant General A.V. Galkin commands the troops. After graduating from command school, he served in Germany and the Far East, rising to the position of commander of a motorized rifle battalion. He reached the rank of commander of the 41st Army in the city of Novosibirsk. Since 2010, he has been the commander of the Southern Military District. Lieutenant General A.V. Galkin is subordinate to all troops on the territory of the district, except for the aerospace defense forces and the police, units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and the FSB and other departments that perform tasks in the territory of the district are also subordinate to him.

Military doctrine

According to the military doctrine approved by the President of the Russian Federation, NATO’s approach to the state’s border, the creation and deployment of missile defense systems, non-nuclear precision weapon systems, as well as the intention to deploy weapons in space are the main external threats to the state.

In addition, external threats are hotbeds of interethnic and interfaith tension, the activities of radicals and in the territory adjacent to the border of Russia and its allies.

Thus, the Southern Military District becomes one of the strategically most important districts ensuring the preservation of peace in the country.

Russian military exercises

The Ministry of Defense reports that in 2015 about four thousand exercises will be carried out by Russian troops.

International exercises are also planned. Among them are the Russian-Belarusian “Union Shield 2015”, the international games “Tank Biathlon 2015”, competitions for different branches of the Armed Forces.
