Curtains made of fabric in two colors. Combined curtains: types, design, ideas for fabric combinations, decoration Sewing curtains in two colors

Curtains in the living room interior are an element that gives the room completeness and individuality. The window in the living room is a reflection of the atmosphere that fills the room, so it is very important to choose the right design for it. Curtains in the living room not only help to create coziness, but also hide some defects in the walls and corners, and also visually change the size of the room. This is especially true for combined curtains of several colors. We will discuss how to sew two-color curtains with your own hands and choose the right fabric in this article.

Selecting the texture of combined fabrics

Sewing curtains in two colors most often involves combining fabrics. In order for fabrics to harmoniously combine with each other, you need to choose a material of the same or at least similar texture. Firstly, such a combination looks more attractive in appearance. And, secondly, from a practical point of view, fabrics of different textures can shrink differently after washing, which can ultimately lead to distortion of the entire curtain.

In addition to texture, the density of the material must also be taken into account. Particularly successful for curtains would be a combination of medium-density fabrics that flow and do not weigh down the window. In addition, the density of the fabric will depend on what function of the curtains is being emphasized. If the curtains serve only for decorative purposes, then you can choose any fabric that suits the style and color, since by securing these curtains, you will not move them often. If curtains are needed to shade a room during the day or hide a room in the evening and at night, then in this case you will need a denser fabric with good light resistance.

Having decided on the texture, you need to carefully select the colors for the curtains. You can create a lot of combinations of two colors, but whether they will be appropriate in the living room is not an easy question. What do designers recommend about this? Here are some of their tips:

  • When combining two colors of fabric for curtains, take as a basis those shades that are present in the design of the living room. Perhaps it will be just one shade - it will be the main one, and an additional one can be selected to match this main one. In this case, two-color curtains will echo the overall composition of the living room;
  • Particularly interesting are combinations of contrasting colors, for example, red and white, black and white, pistachio and chocolate, brown and turquoise. Such curtains will become an accent element in the interior; they are great for monochrome decoration of the living room, if the room seems boring to you;
  • You can combine colors on curtains both vertically and horizontally. If the room has low ceilings, it is better to combine colors vertically. If it is necessary to extend the width of the room, colors are combined horizontally;
  • It is better to combine fabrics of two colors with each other so that the darker color falls on the lower part of the curtain, and in the case of a vertical combination, on the outer part.

What is needed to sew straight curtains?

Let's look at a simple example of how you can sew two-color curtains with your own hands. Having basic cutting and sewing skills, making two straight classic curtains will not be difficult. The first thing you have to do is measure the length of the cornice and the height of the ceilings from the floor to the hook on the cornice. These parameters will help determine the required amount of fabric.

For curtains, they usually take 1.5-2 lengths of cornice, that is, for a three-meter cornice, taking into account the hemming of the side sections, you will need 4.9-5.4 meters of fabric. The height of the fabric is calculated as follows: add fabric to the height of the ceiling to hem the curtains at the bottom and top, for example, for a ceiling 2.5 m high, fabric 2 m 66 cm is sufficient. In addition, if you combine the fabric vertically, then you need to add more to the length 2 cm (4.9 +4 = 4.92 m), and if horizontal, then add the same value to the height of the curtains. Thus, we found that for curtains with a vertical color combination, you will need a piece of fabric with a length of 4.92:2 = 2.46 m and a height of 2.66 m of one color and the same piece of a different color.

In addition to fabric, you will also need:

  • threads;
  • needles;
  • curtain tape;
  • scissors;
  • pins.

We sew curtains ourselves

Before you start sewing, take two pieces of purchased fabric and cut each of them exactly in half vertically. To sew a fabric from two parts of different colors, you need to fold them with their front sides facing each other. Then, at a distance of 1 cm from the edge, stitch on a sewing machine and overlay. Next, gently press the seam with an iron. Fold the sides 2 cm and also iron, fold again 2 cm and iron again. Now carefully make an even stitch along the edge of the fold. The bottom edge of the curtain is hemmed in the same way.

Let's move on to sewing the curtain tape. To do this, fold the curtain to the width of the tape and iron it. We apply the tape to the lapel with the loops facing up and fasten with pins. We make a stitch along the upper and lower edges of the curtain tape. The second curtain fabric is sewn in the same way.

Important! Before you start sewing, check the quality of the stitching on a separate piece of fabric and, if necessary, adjust the thread tension so as not to spoil the fabric later.

Well, now all you have to do is thread the hooks into the loops of the ribbon at an equal distance from each other. And hang the curtains on the cornice. Such curtains are usually complemented with beautiful tulle or light transparent organza, in combination with which it looks elegant and attractive. Thanks to this, no one will be able to see you, day or night.

Thus, two-color curtains for the living room can not only be ordered from an experienced craftsman, but also sewn with your own hands. Combined curtains will help refresh the interior, even if you do not plan to renovate. A little patience, a desire to work, and you yourself will turn the reception room into a cozy and comfortable place where your loved ones and friends will gather.

Photo of combined curtains in the living room interior

Everyone is used to hanging curtains on the windows so that the bright sun does not shine into the room and curious passers-by do not look in, especially if it is on the first floor. However, they can also become the highlight of the interior. Designers moved away from traditional monochromatic products and created new models. Two-color curtains will be a wonderful interior decoration, emphasizing its original style, creating an atmosphere of comfort and harmony in the house. They look original and beautiful.

Peculiarities

Correctly selected curtains of two shades will help simulate the room space. To do this, it is necessary to take into account some of their features:

  • Contrasting colors– the choice of creative people who think creatively and make extraordinary decisions. One of the shades can become a bright accent that sets the mood for the entire room.
  • Combination of shades of one and the same color visually creates a single space. It can be a combination of dark and light tones of olive, cornflower blue, emerald, scarlet. They are well complemented by white and pastel shades.
  • Classic solution– harmonious combination of products. The choice of their color will depend on the overall tone of the entire room.

If you want to expand the space, you should choose cool shades, and the warm tones of two-color curtains will add homely warmth. Double multi-colored models will help to visually expand or lengthen the walls, bring the window opening closer or further away, and create a festive or cozy atmosphere.

For different rooms

A competent combination of two shades will help achieve comfort and harmony in the apartment. However, for each room it is necessary to select certain colors and combinations:

  • IN living room interior There should be a feeling of comfort and a sense of celebration, since this is the place where the whole family, friends, and loved ones gather. A combination of light and dark tones will give the room a stylish and fresh appearance. If the design allows, you can choose a black and white, yellow-green or pink-gray model. This combination looks elegant and impressive. Additional elements in the form of ruffles, lambrequins, flounces will decorate the room, create a festive atmosphere and attract attention.

  • Children's room– an excellent place to place two-color curtains. You can choose your child’s favorite colors or match them to the interior, especially if it is a themed room (for pirates, princesses, car lovers, etc.). Too saturated colors should not be present in the room where kids will relax. You can choose a combination of yellow and green, but the tones are muted, or pink and gray, cream and brown.

  • Bedroom- a place to relax, so curtains should perform not only an aesthetic function, but also benefit the inhabitants of the room. Models for the bedroom are better to choose those shades that soothe, relax and have a beneficial effect on rest. In addition, they should not allow sunlight to pass through, which means you need to pay attention to products made from dense fabrics. Roman two-color curtains with an interesting combination of tones are perfect. An excellent option is a combination of similar colors, while avoiding flashy shades that will catch the eye and negatively affect the psyche.

  • Two-color curtains for the kitchen They must not only fit into the interior, but also be durable, reliable, and easy to clean. In the kitchen, the level of humidity and air temperature are constantly changing, and not every canvas can withstand this. In addition, the products get dirty quickly, which means they will be washed frequently, so the fabric should not shrink after this procedure. Short curtains in calm shades are also suitable.

What's the best way to combine?

Well-chosen two-color curtains can visually hide, enlarge or emphasize some details of the room. Thus, vertical stripes on a floor-length product will visually raise the ceiling, while horizontal stripes will expand the room and increase the window opening. When choosing a suitable model, you can be guided by the following combined options:

  • A combination of warm and cool colors. For a room that receives little sunlight, red, orange, brown and other warm colors would be appropriate. For the sunny side, white, blue, green and similar cool colors are more suitable - they will visually distance the window and fill the room with “freshness”.
  • Harmony of colors and placement of accents. Curtains should be harmoniously combined with other elements of the interior: furniture, walls, etc. At the same time, they can become a bright accent that will attract the attention of owners and guests.
  • Products with drawings, ornaments, patterns. Such curtains will emphasize the style of the interior and become a real highlight. It is worth considering that a large print will bring the window closer, and a small print will move it away. An interesting combination of colors and vertical or horizontal stripes, vegetation and large cells will be interesting.
  • A combination of shades and textures. You can combine two-color curtains using not only different tones, but also fabrics.

It is important to correctly combine not only colors, but also fabrics. It's better to do it like this:

  • It would be interesting to use materials of varying degrees of transparency. As a result, colored curtains superimposed on each other will create the illusion of a third tone.
  • An additional element in the form of a frill, bow, braid or tieback from one fabric will harmoniously connect curtains made of different materials.
  • If the interior is dominated by pastel shades and a restrained style, products made from different fabrics but of the same shade will look great. This will expand the area of the room and complement it with an interesting accent.

When combining materials, it is important to consider in which room such curtains will be located. For the bedroom, you can choose three-layer fabrics or light ones, depending on whether it is on the sunny side.

But for the kitchen, curtains made from reliable fabrics are purchased, since they will be subject to changes in humidity and temperature.

How to choose?

When purchasing two-color curtains, you need to focus on the style of the interior, since disharmony will not create a cozy atmosphere. Product selection occurs in several stages.

At the first stage, materials are selected. If these are combined models, then they should be the same or similar in texture and react equally to external influences. Completely opposite canvases can change their appearance after cutting (one side will shrink, the other will remain the same). Their density will depend on the purpose: veil, chintz, chiffon are suitable for decoration; for darkening a room, dense Blackout fabric would be an ideal option.

It is important which room they will be in: curtains made of organza and linen will be easy to care for and resistant to external influences, which means they will harmoniously fit into the interior of the kitchen; a satin product will become the highlight of the bedroom, especially if the bedding is made from the same material.

At the second stage, you need to choose the right shades. Two-color products can become the main accent in the interior - in this case, contrasting shades (black-white, red-white, green-yellow, etc.) are suitable. When choosing a color, consider the following:

  • Cool shades will visually enlarge the room, while warm shades will add coziness.
  • Pastel colors will add calm and tranquility.
  • Gray colors in combination with others will set you in a businesslike mood.
  • Yellow and all its shades (lemon, golden, etc.) will lift your spirits;
  • The blue tone will add lightness and freshness.
  • Dark tones can highlight the bottom or edges of the curtains.

By following simple rules for choosing curtains with two shades, you can emphasize the stylish design of your apartment.

Options in the interior

Everyone chooses the style of apartment design that will make them feel comfortable. Different tastes for many things lead to designers creating completely new rooms where wallpaper, furniture, carpet (if any) and even curtains are harmoniously combined. The last component of the interior must fit perfectly into the style direction, otherwise it will look ugly in the room.

An important part of the interior of any room are curtains. This original element forms the individual features and visual completeness of the room. A window can be perceived in the context of a small peephole into the outside world, which is why designers devote so much time to its design and development of the overall concept.

Properly selected curtains will create a feeling of peace and comfort, and will also help to level out existing defects in corners and walls, and visually expand the room. In such a difficult task, the main role is given to combined curtains consisting of several colors and fabrics. In today’s article we will look in detail at the issue of choosing the right material and creating two-color solutions based on it.

Selection of fabric texture

Sewing curtains consisting of several colors often involves a texture and fabric combination. For a harmonious combination of fabrics, it is very important that individual products have a similar texture, or even better, the same material. And there are several reasons for this. First of all, such a combination increases visual appeal. Secondly, fabrics of several textures can shrink noticeably after the next wash, and the entire curtain will be skewed.

However, the matter is not limited to texture alone, so it is necessary to pay attention to the density of the source material. The most advantageous option for curtains is to combine fabrics with medium density, which will eliminate the weight of the window. Density is an important criterion for the functionality of curtains. If the products are assigned an exclusively decorative role, then the choice is unlimited; it is enough to achieve color and style matching. Once secured, no one will move these curtains again. Otherwise, special attention should be paid to the fabric, which should be dense and provide the desired level of light transmission.

Having chosen one of the textures, you need to be no less meticulous in choosing the color for the future curtain. Two-color solutions open up limitless combinatorics possibilities. The main difficulty lies in their relevance and compliance with the overall interior of a particular room. In such an important event, it is better to rely on the opinion of professional designers, guided by whom you can sew truly real decorations for windows. Some valuable recommendations:

  • A combination of two colors involves using as a basis those shades that are present in the surrounding space. As for additional ones, they can be anything. This implementation option is the most preferable, since the curtains will visually resonate with the rest of the room.
  • Impressive effects can be achieved by combining contrasting colors. There are plenty of examples: yellow and brown, white and red, white and black. Experts agree that such curtains will perfectly complement a room furnished in a monochrome style and become its visual dominant.
  • Combining colors is allowed not only in the vertical direction, but also horizontally. If the main goal is to increase the level of the ceiling area, it is better to opt for a vertical arrangement of colors.
  • To harmoniously sew products consisting of two colors, it is necessary to place the darker area at the bottom. If there is a vertical combination, then the darkened matter should be on the extreme part.

Let’s take a closer look at how to properly sew two-color curtains with your own hands. To do this, it is enough to have basic practical skills in sewing on a machine and have some theoretical training. The most affordable product is traditional curtains, which are several rectangular blanks. The sequence of actions should be as follows:

  1. Measure the length of the cornice, as well as the height of the ceiling area (from the hook located on the cornice to the floor). Appropriate measurements will allow you to calculate the required amount of fabric.
  2. Experts say that each product requires an average of 1.5 to 2 cornice lengths. Therefore, if you have a cornice 3 meters long, then in order to sew curtains you will need from 5 to 5.5 meters of fabric.
  3. The height of the curtains is very easy to determine: to the height of the ceilings, just add the length of the fabric in the upper and lower parts (it is necessary for fastening). If we are talking about a height of 2.5 meters, then it is necessary to prepare 2.7 meters of fabric.
  4. When combining two fabrics in a vertical plane, add another 2 cm on each side. In the case of a horizontal arrangement, add another 2 cm to the height of the product.
  5. In order to reliably and correctly sew workpieces, it is advisable to have on hand: scissors, needles, pins, threads and a special tape.

DIY “outfit” for windows

Before starting work, you need to take a fabric consisting of two identical cuts, and then cut it in half in the vertical direction. It is very easy to sew a canvas of several colored parts: fold them right sides together, step back 1 cm from the edge and quickly stitch them on a sewing machine. Using an iron, process the seam very carefully.

In the modern world, curtains are a must-have attribute for any interior.

The use of window textiles that decorate and complement the design of the room is necessary to create a special and cozy atmosphere. This is facilitated by diversity:

  • colors;
  • invoice solution;
  • sewing options using decorative trim.

Two-color curtains in various rooms are an interesting interior solution. The variety of color palettes of such models either echoes the overall design idea of the interior, or acts as an accent.

Scope of use

The main purpose of textiles is protection from excess lighting or prying eyes. Curtains made in a two-color variation are equally well used for the living room, bedroom, kitchen or children's room.

Curtains must be harmoniously integrated into the interior of the room, emphasizing the beauty of the design solution. It is especially important to take into account the overall style of the room when choosing window decor.

The color and texture should continue with the fabric drapery. Night curtains are made from fabric that visually resembles furniture upholstery, sofa cushions or a bedspread.

The living room is a gathering place for family members who spend a lot of their free time here. In this regard, it is especially important to choose two-color textile curtains for the living room.

The importance of color for the design of a window opening

One of the options for window draping is the use of two-color curtains. The idea of using a two-color palette is striking in its globality, allowing for a combination of color choices in a variety of variations.

Combinations in the form of:

  • contrasting colors of black with white shades;
  • easily perceived yellowish and green;
  • combination of pink and gray.

In the photo, two-color curtains match any style of room.

If it is necessary to highlight key points in the design of a room, use the contrast of different textured materials.

In addition, depending on where the curtains will be hung, they opt for brightly colored canvases.

For example, bright colors should not be used for the bedroom. To create a relaxing atmosphere, curtains are made using a light, calm tone of the same direction as the decor of the bedroom.

In the kitchen, the drapery should not be made lush, so it would be ideal for the kitchen to use short items decorated with a lambrequin or with cheerful colors.

If the kitchen space is small, then the design of two-color curtains helps to visually expand the room. Decorating window openings with curtains with a vertical pattern helps to increase the height of the ceilings, and with a horizontal pattern - the room itself.

The most original option for decorating a room are two-color organza curtains, which make the room airy and unusual.

How to sew two-color curtains

Two-color curtains in the interior help decorate the room. But if the housewife has certain sewing skills, this is easy to do:

Measure the gap from the floors to the place where the cornice is installed and measure its length. This is necessary to calculate the amount of materials needed.

Decide on the width of the curtain, equal to the length of the cornice doubled. To the resulting number you need to add 4 cm, necessary for processing the canvas at the top and bottom.

To obtain a beautiful product made in two color combinations, the width of the canvases must be divided by two. Take devices in the form of a curtain-tape or grommet type to attach the creation to the cornice.

Cutting the fabric is the first step to the sewing operation. The workpiece is folded in half and cut. Place the resulting parts on the front side and sew them together. To make the seam neat, it is overlaid and ironed.

Processing top, bottom and side cuts

Thinking through the installation process. The most common are designs with eyelets or curtain tape.

In the first option, special rings consisting of two parts are used. In the glued sealing tape, holes are cut in the upper edge for installing fasteners.

In the second, the curtain tape is attached to the finished product. Then it is pulled together using special laces on the sides, forming beautiful and soft folds along the entire length of the fabric.

So, two-color curtains look great with any design idea. They are sewn with your own hands, without requiring special skills. If this is not the case, then an experienced seamstress will do all the work in accordance with your idea and the chosen model.

To add uniqueness to your kitchen interior, you can choose stylish furniture, unusual finishes or bright dishes. Or you can experiment with textiles, using combined curtains of two colors or a combination of several types of fabrics of different textures - this method will not require major repairs or serious expenses and is ideal for novice designers. Therefore, we will consider in more detail the basic techniques of “textile combinatorics” and several win-win ideas for kitchen design.

The kitchen is one of the few rooms in the house where window drapery plays a primarily decorative role. Of course, residents of the first floors or apartments whose windows face the sunny side also use it as protection from excess light and prying glances, but still the main purpose of curtains in the kitchen is to add coziness to the “home.” In order for new two-color curtains to fit perfectly into the interior, it is important not to forget about the general principles of harmony and methods of visual correction of space.

Two-tone curtains for the kitchen window

4 rules for successful combinations:

Warm and cold

Many people know that for “northern” rooms it is better to choose curtains of warm colors, and for sunny windows - cold ones. But it is also important to take into account that warm colors visually bring the object closer, so in a small kitchen you should give preference to cool colors that will visually distance the window and give the room volume. However, you can use an alternative option - neutral tones, complemented by small patterns or small inserts of yellow, orange, grass-green or other “warming” color.

Two-tone orange and white curtains

Harmony and accents

Curtains can be designed to match the decoration and furniture of the kitchen, or become a bright touch that attracts the eye. To make the interior look harmonious, it is worth duplicating the color scheme of the window drapery in other textiles or accessories.

Color and texture

You can combine curtains by using several fabrics of the same type, but in different shades, or by combining materials with different textures and degrees of transparency. But do not forget about practicality, because we are talking about the kitchen with its special microclimate, which is characterized by high humidity, high temperature, soot and smoke with the aromas of the food being prepared. Therefore, materials should not be easily soiled and easy to care for, for example, organza, cotton with the addition of polyester, mesh, crepe chiffon.

Drawings and patterns

With the help of ornaments characteristic of a particular style, you can emphasize the thematic direction of the design. For example, in country, Provence and other rustic interiors, checkered and floral curtains, a simple lambrequin, which can be combined with plain curtains in pastel colors, are appropriate. Historical styles will be complemented by light curtains with golden embroidery or printed silk. And for modern kitchens, decorated in the spirit of hi-tech or minimalism, monochrome models with eyelets and fabric blinds with photo printing are suitable.

Combined curtains of two colors in different styles:

Patterns can also be used to visually change the geometry of a room. For example, vertical stripes on long floor-length curtains will visually lift a low ceiling, a horizontal pattern will “pull apart” the walls and enlarge the window opening, large bright flowers will bring the window closer, and a small print will move it away.

As for combinations of patterns of different types, it is not at all necessary to use only one type of pattern on several curtains. On the contrary, by boldly combining longitudinal and horizontal stripes with bright splashes of polka dots or flowers, you can achieve a stylish and modern look. But a traditional floral print, used on only one element, is more suitable for calm, classic styles.

Interesting combination of stripes and colors

Note! It is important that the curtains not only match the rest of the room’s design, but also match each other – color, pattern, texture or accessories.

The easiest option for creating a unique textile design for a kitchen window is to use combined curtains of two types. The best duo for the kitchen can be Roman or roller designs, complemented by airy curtains, short curtains or a lambrequin. Curtains made of the same material in different colors look no less impressive.

Ideas for creating color cocktails

Let's take a closer look at how to combine curtains of two colors, taking into account the specifics of the kitchen and the stylistic design of the room.

  1. In tandem with a neutral color

A favorite technique from the arsenal of classics is to use a neutral shade (white, gray, milky, beige) and any accent color as the main one. Most often, a curtain or roller blind is decorated in light colors, and a lambrequin or thick curtains act as a contrast or complement - it all depends on the intensity of the chosen color.

A two-tone red and white ensemble looks bright and elegant.

Plain materials are ideal for kitchens decorated in modern styles - minimalism, hi-tech, modern. But if you want non-standard solutions, you can use fabrics with a pattern or multi-colored print as a “base”, echoing the primary colors used in decorating and furnishing the room. You can “dilute” two-color fabrics with bright checks, stripes, floral or geometric patterns - these patterns look very organic in a kitchen setting, especially if the rest of the textiles are decorated in the same spirit.

Advice! You can buy identical curtains in several bright colors and change them according to the season or according to your mood; a neutral base can be easily combined with any color.

  1. Game of contrasts

This option can be a godsend for outrageous interiors, the design of which uses bright colors. Contrasting curtains can harmoniously complement the rich colors already present in the trim or other textiles, giving the kitchen an elegant look. The most popular solutions are bright curtains made from colors of the opposite spectrum (red-green, yellow-blue, black-white), from which you can create truly unusual designs by intertwining fabrics with each other. But even even stripes of contrasting tones look stylish and original - check out the various options for curtains made from two fabric colors, photos of which are provided below:

Airy two-tone curtains with contrasting patterns

The most difficult thing is to choose the right “opposing” shades so that the window does not look like alien elements against the background of the overall picture. As a hint, you can take any two colors already present in the interior and increase their intensity at your discretion. To make it easier to select contrasts and the degree of their brightness, use a small visual hint.

The principle of selecting contrasting shades

Advice! A two-color combination of bright curtains can quickly become boring, so it is recommended to combine them with a third neutral shade or “dosage” the brightness at your discretion, reducing the area of any of the colors so that more than 70% is allocated to the main tone.

A combination in which fabrics from the same or similar colors are used, but with varying degrees of intensity. For example, coffee-colored curtains can be combined with rich chocolate curtains, blue tulle with emerald curtains, peach tones with red, yellow with orange, etc.

Not only color, but also a pattern repeated on window textiles can be used as a unifying motif. In this case, the color scheme of the pattern and fabric may be different.

Advice! If multilayer designs of several curtains are not to your liking, you can sew double curtains from fabrics of different colors and create interesting combinations using tiebacks, tucking the curtain or forming contrasting folds. This solution has another advantage - the ability to periodically change the front side with the back side, creating the illusion of updating the interior.

How to combine curtains from different fabrics

Two-color curtains with different textures are an interesting technique from which you can glean a lot of ideas for original kitchen design.

Some tips for successful combinations:

  • Use textures of varying degrees of transparency or intertwined designs. Overlaying a curtain of one color on top of another will create the illusion of a third unifying shade.

Overlaying fabrics of two different colors with a smooth transition

  • To prevent combined curtains made from different fabrics from looking disjointed, use some common element when creating the design. It can be a braid or tie made from the same fabric, the same pattern, frill, bow.

A border that matches the color of the curtains unites the combined red and white design into a single whole.

The unifying elements of the combined drapery are garters, tape and two-color frill.

  • Products made from several pieces of fabric look very original. Moreover, when sewing it is not necessary to maintain symmetry - in some styles, “patchwork” curtains, decorated in creative disorder, give the room a special charm and homeliness. To harmoniously combine the curtains with the rest of the furnishings, you can use not only two primary colors, but also various patches, left over after sewing other kitchen textiles - tablecloths, chair covers or furniture upholstery.

This is how you can combine leftover fabrics in an original way

  • For discreet interiors, where pastel shades and natural tones predominate, combined curtains of two types made of different fabrics, but in the same color, are suitable. This technique will give the room volume and complement the decor with a discreet but interesting element.

Master class on sewing two-color curtains

If you have decided on the most important thing - the type of design, type of fabric and color of future curtains - all that remains is to buy the material for the work and contact any studio. But if you have a sewing machine at home, it is much cheaper to sew curtains from fabric of two colors with your own hands. And so that you can assess your capabilities and skills, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with an approximate algorithm for the upcoming work.

Determining fabric consumption

To find out how much fabric will be needed to sew the selected model, 3 main parameters are taken into account: the length of the cornice, the width of the fabric in the roll and the splendor of the drapery. If the first two values can be obtained by simple measurements using a tape measure, then with a reserve for folds, puffs or flounces you need to think carefully, and perhaps even use an “experimental” model from a sheet or duvet cover.

Calculation hint:

  • for thick curtains, the length of the cornice should be multiplied by the assembly factor of 1.2-1.5;
  • for curtains with eyelets that form spectacular folds, the length should be increased by 1.5-2 times;
  • for light tulle, organza curtains, veil or chiffon, you will need a reserve of 2.5-3 times the length of the cornice.

Calculation of the assembly factor according to the type of curtain fastening

Important! The fabric consumption can be determined using the following formula: (length of the cornice x assembly factor)/width of the fabric in the roll. The height is taken based on the planned length of the product (to the window sill, to the middle of the window, to the floor) plus a margin of 5-10 cm for hems.

Preparing tools and materials for work

To sew a simple model of combined two-color curtains for the kitchen - airy curtains of various colors - you will need: light fabric according to pre-made measurements, curtain tape to form spectacular folds, trim, needles, scissors, pins and a sewing machine.

Important! For combined curtains, it’s worth making tiebacks yourself, especially if you plan to use them as a unifying element, because you may not be able to find a ready-made option that perfectly matches the color of the curtains.

We cut fabric

Since most often the size of the fabric in the roll does not coincide with the required width of the curtains, you will need to cut the fabric into strips. To make an even cut, you can mark using a ruler and chalk, or carefully pull out one of the vertical threads.

Note! You can sew two curtains from materials of different colors, or create a combined version by combining different colored pieces of fabric in each curtain.

Now all that remains is to sew the curtain tape to the top edge, making a fold on the fabric along the width of the tape, gather each curtain using a tightening cord and hang it by the loops on the hooks of the curtain rod. You can secure the finished curtains with lush bows, tiebacks or magnetic tapes - at your discretion.

Fixed hook loops should not be sewn to the fabric

Advice! Ready-made curtains can be combined with other decorative elements, for example, lambrequin, fringe, lush ruffles or fabric ties.

Video lesson: how to combine curtains of different colors and textures

Using two-color curtains in the kitchen is not a new technique for a long time. But if you choose original combinations of colors or fabrics with an interesting texture, you can create a unique interior in which textiles will be the main highlight of the design. And it is not at all necessary to complete a cutting and sewing course to get a curtain model according to your idea - just transfer the idea to paper and provide a sketch to an experienced seamstress.
