But if you have a sewing machine at home, it is much cheaper to sew curtains from fabric of two colors with your own hands. And so that you can assess your capabilities and skills, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with an approximate algorithm for the upcoming work.

Determining fabric consumption

To find out how much fabric will be needed to sew the selected model, 3 main parameters are taken into account: the length of the cornice, the width of the fabric in the roll and the splendor of the drapery. If the first two values can be obtained by simple measurements using a tape measure, then with a reserve for folds, puffs or flounces you need to think carefully, and perhaps even use an “experimental” model from a sheet or duvet cover.

Calculation hint:

for thick curtains, the length of the cornice should be multiplied by the assembly factor of 1.2-1.5;
for curtains with eyelets that form spectacular folds, the length should be increased by 1.5-2 times;
for light tulle, organza curtains, veil or chiffon, you will need a reserve of 2.5-3 times the length of the cornice.

Important! The fabric consumption can be determined using the following formula: (length of the cornice x assembly factor)/width of the fabric in the roll. The height is taken based on the planned length of the product (to the window sill, to the middle of the window, to the floor) plus a margin of 5-10 cm for hems.

Preparing tools and materials for work

To sew a simple model of combined two-color curtains for the kitchen - airy curtains of various colors - you will need: light fabric according to pre-made measurements, curtain tape to form spectacular folds, trim, needles, scissors, pins and a sewing machine.

Important! For combined curtains, it’s worth making tiebacks yourself, especially if you plan to use them as a unifying element, because you may not be able to find a ready-made option that perfectly matches the color of the curtains.

Since most often the size of the fabric in the roll does not coincide with the required width of the curtains, you will need to cut the fabric into strips. To make an even cut, you can mark using a ruler and chalk, or carefully pull out one of the vertical threads.

Assembling the structure

Now all that remains is to sew the curtain tape to the top edge, making a fold on the fabric along the width of the tape, gather each curtain using a tightening cord and hang it by the loops on the hooks of the curtain rod. You can secure the finished curtains with lush bows, tiebacks or magnetic tapes - at your discretion.
