How to close the doorway. How to lay a doorway: ideas and methods. General requirements for the design of the doorway. How to make a do-it-yourself opening without a door

A beautifully designed doorway always looks neater and gives the whole room a finished look. It's hard not to notice how much it changes when it is framed. And the point is not only that they hide all the nuances of the installation process, but also that the opening becomes more pronounced and noticeable. Very often, designers specifically pay great attention to such a finish. As a result, they get a unique and often unique element of decor in their execution. Increasingly, you can also find openings in which there are no door leaves. Sometimes this is also a deliberate move by designers, and sometimes it's just a necessity. Today we are going to look at the questions design of a doorway without a door. Consider when it is appropriate to leave the openings open, and what disadvantages and advantages such a solution entails.

1. Open opening - a design move or a necessity?

Open-type doorways can increasingly be found in the interiors of modern apartments. Sometimes this is really a design technique, which is designed to bring originality to the overall atmosphere. But more often than not, this is a very sure move in visual terms. expansion of space and save space. At the same time, no one says that such an opening cannot look interesting and unusual. Standard swing doors take up a lot of space, especially if they open inward. Depending on the width of the opening, the door can “eat up” up to 1 square meter of the total area. Instantly appear restrictions on the placement of furniture or decorative elements and a host of other inconveniences.

Sometimes sliding structures are used instead, which are undoubtedly much more compact. However, they do not always look aesthetically pleasing. If the door guides are not enclosed between the walls, they must be mounted on one of them. Thus, the appearance of the wall in one of the rooms may look spoiled. Therefore, in some cases, it would be appropriate to decide on the dismantling of interior doors. At the same time, the line between two adjacent rooms is automatically erased and a single space is formed.

Sometimes it really appropriate, for example:

  • In case of increasing the size of the room by attaching a balcony or loggia to it. In any case, such actions are accompanied by the dismantling of the balcony block, otherwise the whole plan will not be realized;
  • If you plan to combine the living room and hallway. The organization of an open-type portal in this case will blur the line between two rooms that are completely different in purpose, but at the same time maintain a conditional separation. A small living room at the same time will seem much more spacious;
  • If you have organized in the bedroom, while sacrificing the size of the bedroom, it is better not to use blank door panels. Leave the opening without doors, and we will teach you how to beat it beautifully.

Many people use a similar technique when joining the living room to the kitchen. Most often, the opening is performed in the form of various shapes. Undoubtedly, this is the most aesthetic way of combining. But do not forget that if you use the kitchen for its intended purpose and are engaged in active cooking, then all the smells that accompany this process will instantly spread throughout the apartment.

Also not quite right the solution would be to dismantle the door panels in the children's room, bedroom or office. All these rooms require separate space. Of course, the exception may be the case when you live alone and, in principle, there is no one to retire from. In all other cases, doorways without doors can expand the space. Therefore, they are especially common in small apartments.

2. Advantages and disadvantages of doors without doors

After we figured out when it is appropriate and when not to use free doorways, it's time to talk about the clear advantages and disadvantages of this technique. Let's start with disadvantages:

  • When dismantling door frames there is no clear distinction between where one functional area begins and another ends. Using the example of combining a kitchen with a living room in a similar way, we realized that this is not always appropriate. Of course, there are exceptions. For example, when you visit the kitchen in the morning to make yourself a coffee or in the evening to have a light snack. However, this same blurred border effect can be an advantage in other cases;
  • If we take into account that the lack of secluded spaces for a person who lives on his own is not critical, then all the same there are rooms in the apartment where doors are simply necessary. For example, in bathrooms. This lack of open openings is not critical, however, it takes place.

Now let's talk about benefits portal organizations:

3. The choice of the shape of the opening, depending on the style of the interior

Before you choose how to design a doorway, you should also think about its shape. Of course, you can leave everything unchanged. And rectangular open portals look very impressive. And you can try pick up the shape opening, focusing on interior in the room. After all, the opening should harmoniously fit into the overall picture and emphasize its features. Consider the most suitable forms for different styles:

  • Chic destinations such as rococo or renaissance imply a predominance of symmetrical, regular lines. This simplicity is compensated by a large abundance of decorative elements. It can be complex carvings, various stucco moldings with gilding, or complex arched bas-reliefs;
  • Discreet and noble classic style best complement the arched type openings. In this case, the arches are preferably oval, three-center or semicircular in shape. Of course, the classic is not complete without such material as wood, which can be decorated with decorative carvings or milling;
  • Eastern directions arched openings are also preferred, but their shape may be more varied. They can be lancet or keeled, in the form of a heart or a circle. In general, in this case, you can give free rein to your imagination and focus on the shapes and silhouettes of pieces of furniture;
  • romantic destinations do not overload with complex bends. All elements in them should remain light and airy, smooth and graceful. Semicircular sloping openings without sharp transitions are ideal. At the same time, you should not abuse the amount of finishing materials and choose their rough and heavy options;
  • Modern and concise styles, such as, or techno, recognize only strict regular geometric shapes. There can be no talk of any ovals. Strict symmetry must also be present. Therefore, in this case, it is better to leave the shape of the opening unchanged and only carefully align all the corners and edges;
  • Such interesting and extraordinary directions as or pop art must have in the interior an object of a very unusual shape. Usually this is a small piece of furniture, for example, an armchair, chair or. But why not show your imagination and create a winding, asymmetric opening? It is this decision that will best complement and emphasize the stylistic affiliation of the room.

Choosing the most suitable form, you should lean not only to the above recommendations, but also to ceiling height in room. Otherwise, you run the risk of once again drawing attention to the existing shortcoming.

When choosing this type of finish, remember that natural wood requires careful maintenance. And the rest, it all depends on your financial capabilities and imagination. The color of wooden openings should be coordinated with the color of the floor or skirting boards. You can also rely on the color of furniture.

The style also plays a role. After all, not all modern trends welcome the use of such "warm" materials. For example, or minimalism is more preferred by plastic or metal.

12. Decorative finish with natural or artificial stone

When choosing a finish with natural stone, it is necessary take account of his the weight and select an adhesive mixture specifically for such material. In addition, the installation is further complicated by the fact that the fragments can slide under their own weight, so either it is necessary to lay them using the same technology as using a piece of a metal profile and wedges, or hold each pebble for several minutes until the glue grabs.

Also, some experts argue that laying should start right from the floor, but this is not always appropriate. For example, if you want to use skirting boards, it's better to leave room for them than to mount them on top of rocks. Natural stone is expensive material. Therefore, very often preference is given to an artificial substitute. Its appearance at a sufficiently high level imitates the natural texture. It is lighter and more affordable, easier to install and cut. And to further facilitate the process, they came up with ready-made corner elements.

Doorways lined with stone look very cozy. However, you should not choose a similar finish for deep and narrow openings. It may turn out that the opening will resemble the entrance to a cave, which is far from appropriate in all interiors.

13. Arch instead of the usual "rectangle"

Arched openings have become popular for a very long time and are still actively used by many designers. Doorways of a similar shape are very good decision for use in small spaces. They help to visually make the space more spacious. And the right proportions of the width and height of the arch can “raise” a low ceiling. Arches can be both standard forms and the most unpredictable.

Very often, such an element is a key element in the interior, and all the decoration depends on it. You can purchase ready-made arched portals from a variety of materials, or you can do arch on one's own. Often, the frame of the desired shape is mounted from metal profiles and sheathed with drywall. Instead of profiles, wooden planks of sufficient thickness can be used. A layer of plaster is applied on top of it, and then a decorative finish is performed. Very often, arches can be found as a connecting element between a loggia room. They may have built-in shelves, lighting, niches for placing decor items or a fragment. It can also be used as a dressing table or a place to place houseplants. Advantage the design of the doorway in the form of an arch lies in the fact that it can fit into almost any style of interior. It is enough just to choose the right shape and finishing material.

And for creation various functional elements. It can be a composition of wall niches, or it can be a homemade rack. The space around the doorways is often empty. If you equip shallow drywall shelves around the perimeter, you can save space, provide enough space for souvenirs, books, family photos. In this case, the need to purchase a wall or cabinet may disappear automatically.

In addition, such structures can frame openings not only of rectangular, but also of semicircular shapes. This solution looks very original and interesting. Subsequent drywall finishing will depend on the style of your room. It will be possible to simply plaster and paint the surface, choosing the color for the wall covering. Separate shelves can supplement colorful backlight. The back walls of the shelves can be pasted over or painted with a distinctive color.

This will give the design originality and make it visually deeper. From drywall, you can build, probably, absolutely any shape of the structure. The main thing to remember is that it should not be loaded with heavy objects. Still, such elements are more decorative in nature.

15. Making a doorway with textiles

Making doorways with the help of textile elements can be called the most romantic of all ways. A translucent tulle that blows in the wind will create a stunning atmosphere, especially if you choose a fabric with a barely visible shiny thread that will shimmer in the sun. It is with the help of curtains that you can create a design that, if necessary, will create a secluded atmosphere. If, nevertheless, you decide to connect the bedroom with the living room or another room, then choose opaque curtains with side pickups to decorate the doorway.

In addition to the usual transparent or opaque fabrics, filament curtains, curtains made of bamboo or beautiful beads are perfect. You can create complex compositions from several types of fabrics with lambrequins and other elements. Such a volumetric design is appropriate only in large rooms and for wide openings. The room in which the door and window openings are decorated identically looks very interesting.

The only thing you should not do is to choose roller or Chinese curtains or vertical fabric roller blinds for decoration. Passing between rooms in this case will be very inconvenient.

Making an opening without a door implies several features. Not all materials are suitable for this type of finish, and the selected options will have to be handled quite carefully. Some designs can be created with your own hands, and the construction of the rest is best left to a professional.

Peculiarities

The logical conclusion would be that a doorway without a door is made completely without a door frame. All decoration includes only the lining of the opening itself, which is performed using a variety of materials.

The design of a doorless opening allows you to choose from a variety of forms, including both classic and fancy interesting options.

Far from every room, an opening without a door will look appropriate. There are some rooms that must have a door, and these include not only a toilet and a bathroom. Bedroom, kitchen, study must be equipped with a full door because in these rooms more than others there is a need for privacy and intimacy.

However, every rule can be circumvented. For additional decoration of such openings, curtains, muslin, screens are used. They allow you to create the illusion of dividing the room, while not completely replacing the door.

Upgrading an open doorway implies relying on the integrity of the entire home. As a rule, identical doorless openings are made in an apartment or house. This applies to both form and finish. They act as a connecting element, uniting all rooms into a single ensemble.

Speaking about the advantages that open openings have compared to classic doorways, one cannot fail to mention space saving. Each door occupies at least a square meter of usable area. When creating a doorless design, this problem disappears. From an aesthetic point of view, the opening allows you to visually expand the space or expand the functional area of \u200b\u200bthe room by combining it with a utility room. A good example is the recent combination of a balcony and a living room.

In some cases, a doorless space looks much more attractive than a door, especially when it is beautifully designed. For example, shelves are often placed along the contour of such an opening. Statuettes or other little things placed on them beautifully frame the gap, creating a unique atmosphere that cannot be repeated. Thus, sometimes an open opening looks even more intimate than a thick oak door.

Finally, another important advantage is creating adequate ventilation in the apartment. Air circulates better through open space, and for small apartments, for example, as in Khrushchev-built houses, this factor is important - it allows you to fight stuffiness.

Creating several openings can completely change the original layout of the apartment, but in reality it comes out much cheaper than a full redevelopment.

In addition, an opening is often allowed to be created even in a load-bearing wall, so there are much more options for a new apartment plan.

Kinds

There are many different configurations of doorways without a door, which differ from each other not only in their shape, but also in the material with which they are created. Along with traditional raw materials, the latest developments in the field of design are also used.

The simplest design is ordinary rectangular span. Creating a rectangular opening is very simple: the door frame is completely dismantled, then the surface of the walls is leveled along the contour. In the future, the resulting gap is simply painted or lined with a suitable material. There are a great many ways to finish, from the simple installation of wooden doborniks to the creation of pompous stucco columns.

More popular building arched structures. To do this, it is not necessary to expand the opening in the wall; in recent years, the idea of creating false arches has been actively used. In this case, corner elements made of polyurethane or drywall with rounded sides are installed in a rectangular span, and the result is a full-fledged arch at a much lower cost and labor. However, this method is not suitable for all dwellings: it is necessary that the opening has sufficient height.

There are several types of arches:

  • Round arch. It is a classic interpretation and can be used in absolutely any room, regardless of the parameters, but there is one unspoken rule. The lower the ceiling, the wider the arched span should be.
  • Trapezoidal span. It is created from straight lines and can only be called an arch conditionally. Designers do not advise using such a form because of the stable association with a funeral accessory - a coffin.
  • Triangular arch. There are a huge number of subspecies of triangular arches: keeled, lancet horseshoe, Tudor. Similar elements came to modern design from the Middle Ages, and they are used preferably in high spacious rooms.

More and more often people refuse to create ordinary classic openings in favor of fantasy asymmetric ones.

They can only be made in plasterboard partition walls. Asymmetric openings can have any shape, and can also be supplemented with all sorts of auxiliary details: shelves, niches, lighting. Such a design acts as a bright element and sets the tone for the entire appearance of the room. Eye-catching, an asymmetric opening helps to hide possible flaws when repairing a room.

Dimensions

It is possible to balance the proportions of the premises in the apartment with the help of doorways without doors. Depending on whether the opening is wide or narrow, high or low, the impression produced varies.

For rooms with low ceilings, it is strongly not recommended to mount narrow spans. Visually, they will make the room tiny and uncomfortable. It is better to choose a wide option that will visually expand the area of \u200b\u200bthe room, add air and light to it. This applies not only to arched openings, but also to rectangular ones.

The optimal height also depends on the original proportions of the room. If you want to combine two rooms with the help of a gap, it is recommended to make it almost as high as the ceiling. An ordinary span, which serves only as an alternative to a door, should be made much lower, but its height should not be less than 2 m. In the case of arches, this indicator grows by at least 30 cm. This is due not so much to aesthetic rules as to safety requirements: a person can hit hard on the upper narrow part of the arch in the dark.

When constructing asymmetric structures, the following rule should be followed: the more intricate the shape, the wider the opening should be. Too much concentration of monograms and other elements in a small space will overload the view, making the design unnecessarily pretentious and cumbersome. As a result, instead of a spectacular accent, you will get a tasteless option that you will soon get tired of.

Thus, the size of the doorway is more determined by the characteristics of the room itself, and not by the chosen shape.

Remember that very wide doorways are best designed using some kind of texture, such as embossed moldings. If you use an ordinary smooth cladding, the clearance will be “lost” against the general background of the room and, from an aesthetic point of view, will not look particularly harmonious.

In various rooms

In the vast majority of cases, the expediency of installing a doorless opening is obvious, however, sometimes refusing a door is highly undesirable. Among the rooms in which it is best to leave the door is the kitchen. This is especially true in small apartments, where a strong kitchen smell will be especially annoying. It is not always pleasant when aromas are felt in the living room or bedroom.

The old bored interior of the living room can be changed beyond recognition, at the same time competently expanding the usable area. If you refuse a separate balcony block and from the door to the balcony, it will turn out to make the living room brighter. The balcony will certainly need to be furnished in a style similar to the living room, since the rooms, united by a doorless skylight, should be perceived as a single whole.

You can often encounter cases when they refuse the door between the corridor and the dressing room. Since both of these rooms are quite small and cramped, such a move helps to hide this fact, allowing people to feel more free.

In small apartments, they refuse doors between the hallway and the living room, especially if the apartment is one-room. So the whole area is perceived as a single whole, as a result of which the dwelling seems larger.

In cases where such a small apartment has low ceilings, it is better not to choose an arched shape as an opening. It is much more logical to stop at the classic rectangular span.

Quite rarely they refuse the door to the bedroom, but they do not dare to completely leave the entrance “defenseless”. Come to the rescue thick curtains or screens, which perfectly protect the intimacy of the room. If necessary, they can be easily and quickly dismantled. An interesting solution is the use of curtains with tiebacks: they can be completely closed at night, and during the day they will serve as a beautiful frame for the opening.

How to arrange?

Cashing the opening is made with different materials and in different techniques. You can decorate the interior span with your own hands, or you can turn to professionals who will create a complex and unique decor.

A good idea is to decorate the doorway with curtains.

A decorative curtain plays the same role as a door in psychological terms, but it takes up much less space. If desired, the curtains can be completely removed without any problems or replaced with others, while the design of the opening will not suffer (for example, if you just remove the door leaf, loops will remain on the span that do not look very attractive).

Another option on how to decorate a doorway without a door is to use additional design elements - various stucco panels. With their help, it will be possible to ennoble any gap, regardless of how smooth the walls are and in what colors the opening is made. Finishing is extremely simple and often done completely independently.

With the help of stucco molding, it is possible to decorate openings in various styles. For example, you can make a classic arch with columns and heavy curly elements. If you add gilding, you can completely recreate the spirit of baroque or classic. For modern interiors, it is more appropriate to use simple relief moldings with geometric patterns, such as embossed groove lines. If in the first case it was appropriate to opt for pilasters and capitals, then in the second case they should be avoided.

Stucco molding can be found quite rarely, it has practically fallen out of use in recent times. This is due to the relatively small dimensions of modern apartments, because intricate designs look ridiculous in small spaces. You should not completely abandon the stucco elements: some of them can help expand the room.

Also, for the design of doorways without doors, artificial stone masonry, clinker tiles or drywall are often used.

materials

Facing a doorway without a door can be done using a variety of materials. The simplest solution is to paint the gap or paste over it with the same wallpaper as the walls. However, there is one “but”: only perfectly even walls are suitable for this, otherwise the whole structure will not look neat enough and made as if hastily.

Another option is to make a box of extensions and put it in the gap, or sheathe it with MDF panels. In both cases, you get a wooden gap that looks stylish and can be harmoniously integrated into almost any interior.

Framing the opening is best done with valuable wood or its imitation, since it is these solutions that look the best.

It is also possible to sheathe the clearance with drywall. Drywall is a truly unique material. With its help, it is possible to form a structure of almost any configuration, supplementing it with elements from other lightweight materials, such as polyurethane.

A simple plasterboard opening can be easily done on your own, and it will not take much time, but the effect will please.

Often the gaps are laid out with imitation stone or clinker tiles. Clinker tiles imitate brick, while it weighs several times less. They produce tiles of different shapes: there are classic elements, as well as special corner ones. There are a wide variety of sizes on the market, but medium-sized tiles are the most popular. The seams between the tiles are usually rubbed with a compound that exactly imitates the main wall covering.

Artificial stone looks more interesting than clinker tiles. There are imitations of various materials: limestone, marble, malachite and many others. This material has a lot of advantages: such a lining looks expensive, harmonizes perfectly with other finishing materials, has a long service life and wear resistance, and is also very easy to clean. The laying of such material can be carried out either in a geometrically well-thought-out order, or randomly - both options look equally successful.

Both tiles and stone are fixed either on tile adhesive (when the walls under them are not aligned well enough), or on liquid nails (if the walls have a perfectly flat surface).

For information on how to independently make a decorative arch lined with gypsum stone and bas-reliefs, see the following video.

Options in the interior

A rather simple opening with a slightly curved edge adds pomposity and grandeur to the room. Its unusual structure is made in rather restrained proportions: straight lines are used, there is no complex decoration. The almost even square shape contributes to the visual preservation of the proportions of the room, without creating any visual illusions.

The use of natural materials is encouraged when creating the design of a doorless opening. Wood and raw stone harmonize well with each other, despite the fact that the tree was selected of valuable species, and the stone is the most ordinary. The play on contrasts deserves special attention: firstly, wood and stone contrasting in color are used, and secondly, the even edge of the wooden casing is adjacent to the torn edges of the masonry.

Making a doorway without using a door is a fashionable and modern trend in interior design.

Such a doorway visually connects two rooms.

Let's start with how and when this is usually resorted to and with the advantages of this solution:

  • A doorway without a door allows you to save space in the room. Indeed, you get some extra floor space and space along the wall if the door opens close to the wall. This can be critical for small spaces, such as hallways, small enclosed areas of the room, former "smoking rooms" in public buildings, former pantries, and so on. This will be especially noticeable for large doorways that involve the installation of double doors.
  • You want to save money or do not want to buy a door if you are planning a redevelopment soon. Yes, often the reason for such a decision is a banal saving of money. It's no secret that installing a good door will cost a significant amount. If you don’t want to install a cheaper door, or don’t want to spend money on decorating a temporary room, a doorway without a door is perfect for you.
  • It is necessary to visually combine the two rooms. Often, as a “legacy” from the old owners, you get a niche in a room that used to be a pantry. You want to put bookcases in there, you want them to be part of the room, but you don't want to put a door in there. Making an opening without a door in this case would be a good solution. Or you want to visually combine the dining room and kitchen so that they are almost one, but still you can distinguish them. Here, too, a doorway without a door will come in handy.
  • It is necessary to visually separate the two rooms. Too long hallways and corridors look unnatural. You can easily solve this problem by installing a wide doorway with curtains in the middle of a long corridor, or even just hanging curtains in the middle. You can also do with a room that is too long - just divide it into two zones with the help of a spacious doorway, decorated with curtains. Even fully open curtains will create the illusion of different rooms, taking up a minimum of space. You can use different design styles for both parts of the room, for example, making a work area and a relaxation area.
  • Solving the problem with lighting. Dark niches, corridors and passages have always been a disadvantage of any apartment. By installing doorways without a door and decorating them with filament curtains, “not full-length” screens or translucent curtains, you will ensure sufficient light access to dark rooms from light ones. Usually, doorways without a door make it easy to pull back the curtains and quickly get enough light into a dark room from a bright one when needed. No glass doors will allow you to get as much light from the living room into the dark hallway as a completely open opening with curtains pulled back.
  • Solving the problem with the review. If you have small children and you want to watch them, there is nothing better than making a doorway without a door to the nursery. Translucent curtains or a screen that is not full-length will allow you to easily watch the children. A wooden rigid screen that is not full-length would be preferable here - children will not be able to leave the room. So, for example, you can make a nursery and a bedroom out of one room, and you can watch the child while doing your own business and being nearby. A doorway without a door will help in other similar cases - the door between the kitchen and the bar, the door between the dining room and the living room, etc.
  • Problems with heating and air circulation. When you have an unheated room in your house, a good way to warm it up is to leave the door open. For this, thread-like curtains or a screen that is not full-length are perfect. You can also solve the problem of stagnation of air in the room - you will get a delimitation of space without having to keep the door open all the time.
  • The complex shape of the opening. Sometimes it is not possible to order a door to an opening designed in the form of a pointed arch, trapezoid or other complex shape. Usually this is required to be done in bars, restaurants, clubs, and other public places. In this case, making a doorway without a door will be the only right decision.

There are also disadvantages of designing a doorway without:

  • Unsatisfactory noise and sound insulation, permeability to odors. Naturally, it is desirable to separate the private bedroom from the rest of the room, the kitchen from the common room. Smells from cooking or noise from your parents' guests when you want to sleep in after a night shift will be a bit of a nuisance. If you like to watch movies, listen to music or play online games until late, it is better to close your room with a door so as not to disturb other members of your family to sleep.
  • The need for reliable delimitation of space in the room. It is absolutely necessary to securely fence off areas in the room, such as a bath or toilet. It is also desirable that the door to these zones not only be, but also be locked with a latch. The bedroom is also a fairly intimate area, and it is also desirable to provide it not just with a door, but with a lockable door. Curtains and many other design options for a doorway without a door do not provide such an opportunity. The door to the pantry, in which all rubbish is unsightly dumped, is also desirable to have. So you hide the contents from prying eyes.
  • Protection against theft or unwanted intrusions. If you live in a room with people you do not really trust, it is better to equip your personal room with a good door that also locks with a key. You will protect yourself not only from theft, but also from the fact that someone will take your thing to “measure” or “look” and stain or stretch it. If you have a personal computer at home and want to restrict access to it, for example, a child, you can not only set a password, but also a door that will not allow the child to enter your room and save you from unnecessary temptations.

General requirements for the design of the doorway. How to make a do-it-yourself opening without a door

It would seem that the easiest way to design a doorway without a door would be simple plastered slopes.

Or made of drywall, covered with wallpaper and decorated with filament curtains.

However, not all so simple.

For example, if you often walk through such a passage, or your small children, you will inevitably touch hard objects on the edges of the opening.

The edges, even those reinforced with metal, will eventually peel off, and it will look ugly.

Moreover, rooms usually have different wallpapers, and it will be necessary to somehow solve the problem with the transition from one room to another.

A much more correct solution would be to decorate a doorway without a door with your own hands using or a plastic structure. Sheathe the slopes with a plastic panel around the perimeter, or an additional canvas for door frames.

Outside, around the perimeter of the opening, you can install platbands, or even just put a plastic or wooden corner. Platbands should be placed if you have to make an opening in a slightly curved wall - they allow you to bypass the curved wall, while bending the corner like a flat casing will not work.

Another option would be to simply put a finished door frame in the opening - this is suitable if you do not want to buy yet, or it is not ready yet. Then you can always embed hinges and put a regular door in the doorway.

Making a doorway with curtains

The easiest option for decorating a doorway without a door is to hang curtains. Depending on the possibilities and requests, there are two options for curtains - do-it-yourself or bought in a store.

When buying, you often buy a ready-made mechanism for opening and closing curtains, as well as fasteners for them. Usually curtains for a doorway are quite rigid, and you will need heavier fasteners than for ordinary curtains.

Pay attention to the reliability of the fasteners upon purchase, the thickness of the hinges on the curtains, etc.

The second is to arrange a doorway without a door using curtains with your own hands. You can use purchased items for fasteners, and sew the curtains themselves.

You can use both thick fabric and tulle curtains. For blind fasteners, you can hang two curtains to the upper edge of the opening tightly, while providing the possibility of fixing them along the edges of the opening when it is necessary to provide an open passage.

For example, make two opening loops from which you can grab the curtains at the top and bottom of the opening on both sides.

An excellent design option is filament curtains. Filament curtains are threads made of textiles, wooden elements in the form of long beads, ceramic or elements.

They hang from top to bottom, blocking off the doorway. Such curtains allow you to pass without moving them.

If necessary, they can be equipped with a mechanism that will allow them to move away, or with grips in the upper and lower parts of the doorway on both sides to open the doorway if necessary.

Making a doorway without a door using non-standard design solutions

Design using non-standard design solutions - any other without the help of curtains or a door.

There can be many technical solutions in the design.

Consider retractable door, screen, screen door, vertical roller blind and blinds as the most common.

A sliding door is perfect in cases where there is no way to provide space for opening.

It is a door on rollers that roll along the guides at the top of the door and slides away along the wall.

Among the advantages of this door is the original design and reliable insulation of the premises, which is comparable to a conventional door. Among the shortcomings - a rather high cost, the closing mechanism fails more often than the hinges of a conventional door, the need for maintenance, it takes up space along the wall.

A screen is the simplest option for delimiting space inside a room. Unfortunately, this simple and effective tool is rarely used in Russia, unlike Japan and other Asian countries.

At the same time, it is very simple not only to close the doorway, but also to separate parts of the room without resorting to redevelopment. For example, you can divide a room into a sleeping and a common area only for sleeping, or separate a zone for a computer without resorting to a major redevelopment of the room. If necessary, the screen can be easily removed.

The screen can be placed in the door. In case you want to firmly fix it during installation, you can use the four hooks with which the screen is attached to the door.

This will prevent it from tipping over or being opened by small children. The screen can also be combined with curtains - use a wooden frame for the screen, on the elements of which hang small curtains.

The classic Japanese screen is wooden sliding frames that are filled with sheets of thin paper with a pattern. Such a screen transmits light a little and is very practical, although it requires careful handling. Usually, for light access, it is made lower by about 70 cm.

One of the practical features of designing a doorway with a screen is the ability to close the opening only to a part of the height, leaving its top open. In this case, you will be able to observe what is being done in the next room, looking out over the screen.

To do this, place the screen on your head lower than your full height. Or you can simply provide additional light access by leaving a small area on top of the screen.

In the case when the doorway is wide enough, you can put the screen not on its entire length, leaving a temporary passage of a smaller width, and if necessary, open and close completely. If you have a skill in carpentry, you can easily make a screen for an opening or for a room in general with your own hands.

A screen door is an improvement over a conventional screen. Usually it is made from narrow wooden planks. It has an opening and closing mechanism similar to window blinds that is attached to the ceiling or floor.

It is preferable that it be attached to the ceiling - this way dirt will not get into the opening mechanism and it will not need to be constantly cleaned, but in this case it is impossible to make the screen not at the full height of the opening.

Usually it can be bought to order, ordered in a workshop, or occasionally found on sale in large stores. In any case, it will cost you dearly.

Roller blind is another design option for the doorway, which came from the windows. A window blind is a traditional solution when it is necessary to limit the access of light to a room on bright spring days.

A roller blind for the door can also be used. It is attached at the top, and rolls from top to bottom. At the bottom, it is desirable to have at least two fasteners and a rigid element at the bottom of the curtain.

The advantage of a roller blind is that you can, without using the door, close access to your room by lowering the curtain and fixing it at the bottom. Among the shortcomings - the curtain will have to be rolled out, each time bending down, which will be inconvenient for the elderly.

It will be more convenient in this regard to use blinds. Having the same principle of operation as a roller blind, opening from top to bottom and closing from bottom to top, the blinds allow you to make the doorway either completely closed or open, or partially open, leaving space between the half-open strips of the blinds.

However, they close and open much easier - just pull on a special thread. Among the disadvantages of blinds, it is worth noting the higher cost and often the inability to purchase sufficiently rigid and durable blinds that would be suitable not only for windows, but also for doors.

They can be purchased at a furniture store, or ordered in any color and shade from a company that installs garage shutters - they can also make them for a room. For the price, it will be much more expensive than installing a regular door.

How to arrange a doorway without a door to the kitchen - in the video:

During the repair process, it may be necessary to redevelop the dwelling, and in this case it is necessary to determine the better to close the doorway instead of the door. For this purpose, materials of various types and properties can be used. In this case, you can completely eliminate the opening and level it with the wall, or make a decorative design.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to close the doorway

The need for work

First you need to determine for what purpose it is necessary to close the doorway, the list of works and the choice of materials that will be used instead of the door will largely depend on this. Several options are possible:

  • redevelopment - involves the complete elimination of the opening, the entrance will be equipped elsewhere, and this area will become a simple wall;
  • niche device - an alternative to the previous option, in this case, you can arrange a convenient place to store things;
  • decorative replacement of the door - the opening essentially remains intact, but instead of the door, other devices will close it, leaving the passage free.

If you want to avoid warping the wall, use materials similar to those of the primary structure.

Brick

The most radical measure is to completely get rid of the opening, in which case you need to decide what is the best way to lay the doorway. For this purpose, in most cases, brickwork will be the best option. You can also use foam blocks if the walls are thick enough. This type of masonry is best suited for load-bearing structures.

For load-bearing walls, brickwork is the best solution.

How to lay a doorway with an ordinary brick:

  1. Prepare the base. To do this, remove the floor covering to the level of concrete.
  2. Start laying the brick on the sand-cement mortar. Make rows with an offset of half a brick.
  3. Use large nails to secure new and old masonry. One side of the nail is hammered into the end of the opening, the other part of it is hidden in the seams.
  4. Move from bottom to top, applying the solution in a not too thick layer. Tamp the rows with the back of the trowel. Be sure to check the level and coat the sidewalls.

Drywall

There is nothing easier than closing the doorway with drywall sheets. This method is excellent for embedding walls in a straight line, as well as for building niches. It is much more convenient to work with him, besides, this will require much less funds.

Installation of a partition with drywall is carried out by fixing it to the frame. As materials for it, you can use special metal profiles or durable wooden beams. It is much more convenient to work with the first type, since you can build a structure of any shape.

Drywall is fastened with self-tapping screws to a metal profile frame

How to seal a doorway with drywall:

  1. Using self-tapping screws and a drill, fix the metal frame around the perimeter of the opening.
  2. Cut the profile into cross bars. They are installed in increments of 20 to 40 cm to strengthen the wall structure with drywall in the opening.
  3. Measure the size for the drywall sheet and cut out the appropriate pieces.
  4. Fix them with self-tapping screws to the profiles.
  5. If you decide to make a niche in the opening, the frame is first constructed according to its shape, and then closed with drywall sheets.
  6. All joints between drywall are glued with a sickle mesh.
  7. After that, you need to putty the joints and completely level the surface.

Decorative solutions

Major elimination of the doorway is not always required; it can be closed with something else. The most popular solutions are:

  • decorative curtains;
  • the cloth;
  • blinds.

Decorative options for closing the doorway

Decorative curtains are interconnected small fragments: bamboo, vine, beads, threads, which form a partition to close the doorway. A variety of available options allows you to choose exactly what fits perfectly into your interior.

The second way to close the opening is to use fabric. This is a kind of imitation of window curtains. As a material, you can use both translucent tulle, gossamer, and thick curtains. To hang them in the opening, use a cornice. You can simply hang a piece of fabric or create a complex composition of several elements of different colors and textures.

For a classic interior, the addition of lambrequins is an excellent solution, but they can also be used in modern rooms if you create an unusual hard lambrequin.

Less popular, but one of the most convenient is the option using blinds. They allow, if necessary, to completely block the passage into the room. There are two types of blinds:

  • vertical;
  • horizontal.

Both can be used for doors. The most convenient are still vertical blinds, they do not restrict the passage as horizontal ones. Also a variation are Roman blinds or roller blinds, they can be made of fabric, bamboo or other materials.

Depending on your needs, use one or another approach to solving the problem regarding closing the doorway. Each of them has its own merits.
