Classes at UDN began in 1960 at the preparatory faculty, in 1961 at the faculties of engineering, historical and philological, medical, agricultural, physical and mathematical and natural sciences, economics and law. The first graduation took place in 1965, 228 specialists from 47 countries of the world.

In 1964, the University was accepted as a member of the International Organization of Universities (UIA), and also received the opportunity to send official representatives to the World Festivals of Youth and Students.

On February 5, 1992, by order of the Government of the Russian Federation No. 229-r, the University was renamed the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. The founder of RUDN University is the Government of the Russian Federation.

Since 2012, the university has been able to develop its own educational standards.

According to the results of the 2014/2015 academic year, RUDN University entered the top five Russian universities in the National University Ranking.

In 2016, for the first time, RUDN entered the top ten universities in Russia in the field of "Medicine" according to the "Expert RA" agency.

The Peoples' Friendship University of Russia was established during the reign of N. Khrushchev, in 1960, as the Peoples' Friendship University.
