Do-it-yourself wooden box. A good gift for mom is a do-it-yourself box made of plywood. Chipboard prices

Any work with wood is always exciting, because there is an opportunity not only to show your own imagination, but also to make a thing that fully meets your needs and tastes. Agree, it's nice when the house has a thing made by hand. If, for example, you take care of how to make a wooden box with your own hands, you can get a useful and beautiful accessory! This box can be used to store collectible coins, jewelry, and other small items. The thing, in a word, is convenient.

The nuances of making wooden boxes

There are various ways to make a wooden box. An easy way, which is best suited for beginners, involves the use of a sheet of plywood, which must be carefully aligned and treated for all sorts of defects. After preparing the surface, it is marked in accordance with the drawing of the future box, which will require a ruler, a compass and a pencil.

On a note! It is important to accurately work out the product scheme, because the quality of the final result will largely depend on this stage.

For maximum savings in consumables, all the elements of the box can be made rectangular - so there will be almost nothing superfluous left.

After checking the applied markings, the walls, cover and bottom of the structure are cut out. It is important to cut very carefully to obtain the most even contours. Otherwise, due to negligence, you will have to re-manufacture damaged parts.

After that, the parts must be connected. It is best to use carpentry spikes for connection. If the box is small, the spikes can be regular square ones (their height should be the same as the thickness of the plywood sheet).

If you cut out all the blanks and removed unnecessary fragments from them with a file, then you can rejoice - the most difficult part of the work is behind you! Now it remains to build a box of finished parts. The spikes are hammered into the sockets (if necessary - if they do not enter - the excess is filed off). It is recommended to lubricate the walls with glue for greater strength, and then firmly connect them to each other, which is traditionally done with a vice.

The bottom of the product is planted along the edges with glue, after which it is pressed against the walls and held for some time. To fix the cover, you will need small metal loops. This is how the simplest wooden boxes are made. Having finished with the manufacture, you can proceed to the decorative design.

How to make a box?

To decorate the product, you can varnish it or paint it. Some prefer carved boxes (such as in the photo below) or made using decoupage technology. In any case, the final result will depend on the creative abilities and imagination of the master.

About carved boxes

To perform such woodwork, you should prepare:

  • oblique knife;
  • pencil;
  • pen knife;
  • compass;
  • ruler.

If you need to cut oblong-shaped parts, a pen knife is used for work. It is more convenient to cut geometric shapes and straight lines with an oblique knife.

On a note! The required pattern must first be applied to the wood, for which you can use a ruler with a compass or a stencil. If a piece cannot be cut with a knife, then stripping will be required. Having finished with cutting, it remains only to grind the product with “sandpaper”.

A few words about the castle

To make the finished product look more elegant, it can be decorated with a hook or lock. To fix various locks, usually small screws are used, as is the case with hinges). Thanks to this, the box will remain closed, and what it contains will be hidden from prying eyes.

Option number 1. Beautiful wooden box

Let's start with a simple one - with the plywood box mentioned above.

To make it, prepare:

  • eight-layer plywood;
  • milling cutter, miter cutter and cutter 45 degrees;
  • polymer glue;
  • gold paint;
  • electric jigsaw;
  • acrylic varnish;
  • sandpaper;
  • gas burner;
  • putty;
  • screws;
  • 2 loops.

Prices for popular models of jigsaws

Electric jigsaw

Step 1. To begin with, future blanks are marked on the plywood sheet (these are 4 walls, 1 bottom, 1 lid and 4 lid walls).

Step 2 All parts are cut with an electric jigsaw. Although it is better - if possible - to use a circular saw (so the cuts will be smoother).

Step 3 The edges of the blanks are milled at an angle of 45 degrees - this is how plywood layers will be visible from the outside.

Step 4 The surfaces of the blanks are carefully processed with sandpaper, all flaws are eliminated.

Step 5 On a flat work surface, a box is created from the walls. It is better to use polymer glue for this - it sets quickly enough and has good viscosity.

Step 6 The walls of the lid are connected in the same way.

Step 7 The walls of the lid are trimmed flush with the box until the glue is completely frozen.

Step 8 The result is the following design, which relatively clearly demonstrates how the box will look like.

Step 9 The joints are putty. By the way, if a milling table were used (and in our example it was not), then there would be no gaps, since manipulations with small details would not be carried out on weight.

Step 10 Details are sanded already on putty.

Step 12 Seats are selected using a miter cutter.

Step 13 Here's what you should get. You can guess.

Step 14 Metal hinges are fixed with screws.

Note! Before screwing the hinges, the holes for the screws are made in advance, and with a slightly smaller diameter drill! Otherwise, the plywood may break due to screwing in.

Step 15 The loops are removed. The product is carefully fired, while it is important not to overheat it (otherwise the walls will lead with a screw).

Step 16 The hinges are reinstalled. The cover of the product is covered with acrylic varnish. Then the box is pasted over with masking tape, as in the photo below, and the edges are painted with a sponge.

Step 17 You can decorate the box with some pattern. In our example, this is a hieroglyph, previously printed on paper and cut out (it turned out to be a homemade stencil).

Step 18 The stencils are stuffed, after which you need to wait for some time for the drawings to dry.

Step 19 Actually, that's all. Homemade box is ready!

Now you can put something in it and put it in the allotted place.

Option number 2. Original double-walled box

Making such a box is much more difficult, but we will help you figure it out.

Step 1. On the pre-processed workpiece, you need to draw cut lines with a pencil. And here one important point should be taken into account: during the transfer of the sketch, it is imperative that the longitudinal orientation of the fibers is observed!

Step 2 An even longitudinal part is cut off from the workpiece (its thickness should be 1.5-2 cm). This part will serve as a product cover in the future.

Step 4 After that, the part is cut into 2 parts and the inner waste part is cut out. Thus, a conical cavity of the product is formed.

Step 5 The halves are glued back together. Thanks to this, by the way, internal stress is also removed, cracking and deformation of the product are prevented. The glue should be applied in a thin layer, and all excess inside should be carefully removed.

Step 6 The glued parts are placed under the clamps. In this case, you need to carefully monitor that there are no distortions and displacements.

Step 7 The table returns to a horizontal position, a pair of slices is cut off from the waste part. This will be the bottom and lid of the future product.

Step 8 The interior of the box is painted. It is more convenient to paint at this stage, while there is free access from both sides.

Step 9 The table returns to the inclined position again, after which cuts are made along the outer contour.

Step 10 Glue is applied to the ends of the bottom with a thin layer, then it is inserted into the lower part of the product (you need to press it all the way with your fingers).

Step 11 The elements of the cover are glued to the workpiece, cut off at the initial stages of work.

Step 12 When the glue dries, the main contour of the cover is outlined, after which this part is cut out.

Note! The technique described above is universal, as it makes it possible to experiment with shapes and design, making original and beautiful boxes with your own hands.

Option number 3. Simple walnut box

The same steps must be performed when making another project - a wooden box with four walls. Having an unusual design and curved shape, such a box will look really modern and stylish!

Option number 4. Concave lid product

Option number 5. Box of ice cream sticks

To make such a box suitable for storing various little things, prepare:

  • ice cream sticks (29 pieces);
  • scissors;
  • acrylic paints (requires 2 colors);
  • ruler;
  • corrugated cardboard;
  • pencil;
  • satin ribbon;
  • hot glue.

Step 1. To begin with, the sticks are painted in 2 colors (choose them yourself). Since we have an odd number of them, it is divisible by 15 and 14.

Step 2 A pair of rectangles (70x55 mm) and a pair of semicircles (height - 30 mm, base - 70 mm) are cut out of corrugated cardboard, after which the cut parts are painted.

Step 3 For the bottom, 7 sticks are used, laid out with alternating colors. To prevent the sticks from moving, they can be temporarily fixed in the center with adhesive tape.

Step 4 Cardboard rectangles are glued on the sides.

Step 6 Another 10 sticks are glued onto semicircles - as a result, the lid of the future box is obtained.

Everything, now you can get acquainted with how the product will look like.

Step 7 Cut out strips of satin ribbon. Further, the ends of the cardboard are glued with these strips.

Step 8 A couple of pieces of tape are glued to the lid of the product, but in such a way that the edges hang down on one side by about 20 mm. These hanging edges are glued to the box, resulting in a kind of "loops" through which the lid will open.

Step 8 Additionally, a bow (made from the same satin) and a bead are glued. Everything, our beautiful box is ready! And if you have any other questions, check out the video below.

Video - Decorative box of ice cream sticks

Decorating a wooden box - what is worth knowing?

Despite the attractive design and shape, the box will look really original only after decoration. The technique of relief carving provides in this case an almost limitless scope for creativity.

Using key carving techniques, you can create original textures on the box. We can talk about both simple textures and complex ornaments or geometric shapes.

  1. A semicircular chisel used for invoicing a product with small dimples.
  2. Forming grooves with an angled chisel on the surface of the lid of the box.

On a note! In the photo below, you can find more complex decorating examples that use complex textures and geometric patterns.

As a conclusion. How can you cover the box?

In the role of finishing coatings in this case are traditional means. Wax, for example, will perfectly emphasize the texture of dark wood, and it is better to finish products made of light wood with oils (for example, linen). To experiment with a color palette, use water stains with coloring pigments.

Video - Making a box of wood and leather

Today in the master class I will show you how to make a box for the ages, so that you can pass it by hand. The whole process will be shown from the creation of the wooden box itself, to its decoration.

I make almost all the blanks for my work myself, and people often ask me questions about the blanks. Therefore, I want to divide my MK into two parts.
Part number 1 - blank.
Part number 2 - decor.

So let's start part 1.

We will need:

  • Plywood 8 mm,
  • Wooden block 2*4 cm,
  • Nails,
  • Glue moment "Crystal",
  • jigsaw,
  • Screwdriver with grinding attachment,
  • A hammer,
  • Blowtorch (gas bottle)
  • Water-based stain (Oak color)
  • Sandpaper (different weights)

In this photo, I have already sawn plywood into pieces of the desired length.

Before starting to make a blank, I sketch a drawing on a piece of paper. Here, I share with you my "drawings".
To understand what we will collect.
The box will be rectangular in shape (front view). Inside (top view) the box will be divided into three parts. The middle part will be covered with a lid, and on the left side there will be a separately made small box. As planned - this is for the first tooth.

This is a "drawing" of the lids, which will be alone inside a large box, on the middle compartment. And the second one is on a small box for a tooth (only it will be square).
Covers will consist of two parts. I signed them as: Lid and Inner Lid.

And these are all the dimensions that we need for a large box.
Naturally, these are inaccurate numbers (because our plywood is 0.8 cm thick), so you have to grind some pieces.

These are the dimensions for the "tooth" box.

I will say right away, because this is the question I have to answer most often. People ask why they can’t cut plywood evenly with a jigsaw?
And I can't! Then, after cutting, I carefully grind each end of the piece. An ideal saw cut is possible only on a machine with a jigsaw, whatever one may say, it will not work to cut evenly.
I was lucky, our friends have their own furniture production. Because of one box, of course, I won’t go to them (so as not to bother), but when I need to saw a lot of plywood, I go to them and they will cut everything for me in 10 minutes. Thank you very much for this!
I lay out all the pieces of plywood (having previously polished well all the walls that will be inside the box, otherwise it will be inconvenient to do it later) and armed with glue, I begin to assemble the box.

When the glue "grabs", I knock everything down with carnations. The length of the nails is 2 cm.

Little by little, the outlines of the future box are already visible.
I always collect boxes in this order. First the bottom, then the ends, and then the front sides.

Here is such a tray turned out.

As we can see, the side walls protrude a little. We carefully grind all such places.

The first cover is ready. Lid - on the middle compartment inside the box.
Just glue and knock down two pieces of a rectangular shape.
Of course, carnations are visible from the inside, but we will cover them with decorative nails later.

The middle cap has taken its rightful place. And a small "tooth" box is ready.

Here it is, but closer.

Next, you need to put together a lid on a large box. To do this, we need a wooden block (a good 2 * 2 cm, but I did not find this, I found only 2 * 4 cm).
In general, I had to cut it lengthwise to get the dimensions I needed. Here's a jigsaw to help me.

Lid, in progress. I glue the bars on the glue and knock down (on top) with carnations.

The workpiece is ready! You can start roasting.

Attention! Dangerous! Working with a blowtorch requires special care. Children should not be taken! Adults take only in the presence of a bucket of water!
I have been working with stain for a long time, but I like how the stain looks after firing. It turns out the flow of colors. Therefore, I always "resort" to roasting.
I saw a lot of works (by other masters) with firing. I don’t want to offend anyone, but sometimes I want to scream straight out: - Why are you burning plywood like that? Plywood is not a tree, it does not require strong firing. Moreover, she is AFRAID of strong fire. Plywood begins to burn layer by layer and ugly burnt chips form.
In general, we burn the workpiece lightly, and we burn it in such a way that the "pattern" of tan marks is initially beautiful.

I cover it with a stain three times (this is optional, depending on how intense you want the final color).

Then we take sandpaper (of different hardness) and begin to overwrite all the ends, giving the plywood an old, age-old look.
The photo shows that the small box has already been processed with sandpaper.

And this is a lid from a large box. View BEFORE and AFTER.
This is where I'll end part one. And I'll move on to the second step.

We will need:

  • Trafathers,
  • Putty,
  • PVA glue,
  • acrylic paints,
  • acrylic enamel,
  • Construction paper tape,
  • felling,
  • Microbeads, rhinestones, beads,
  • Claim. flowers (paper, plastic),
  • Various metal fittings and other little things for decor (your choice).

We will decorate only the covers, and we have them, if you remember, 3 pcs.

As always, I knead the putty (finishing, building) with water and pva glue. Here's to this consistency.
There is about half a glass of putty, 1 teaspoon of PVA and 1 teaspoon of water.

I arrange stencils more comfortably.

And I transfer the drawing to the blank.

So that the pattern on the covers does not look monotonous, I use two different stencils.

The stencils are applied, we are waiting for complete drying.
After drying with fine sandpaper, I carefully grind all the inscriptions.

All these decors will be painted with black acrylic paint. I paint over some with a brush, some with a sponge, and some with full immersion in a glass in which I diluted black paint in water.

While it looks somehow gloomy, I even felt sad at that moment. It seems that the box should be "Mom's Treasures", but here the flowers are black. I work further.

I also paint the covers black.

Then, while the black color has not yet dried, I smack a little with a sponge, in some places with green paint (also acrylic). We are waiting for it to dry.
While I wait, I decide to varnish all my boxes. I use nitro polish. I varnish for 5-6 times, carefully sanding each layer of varnish so that in the end the surface is smooth.

I return to the lids when the first (black layer) is dry.

I mix greens with whitewash and apply paint to the surface with a wide brush. As if highlighting the relief.

I apply the paint like this: the first layer, for example, along. The second coat of paint, the one that will be lighter, across. And then vice versa again.

Each time I add a little more white.

In the end, I settled on this color.

It seems to be a good color already, but I want to add a little mother-of-pearl. Acrylic enamel is quite suitable for this role. I dip the sponge a little into the enamel and go over the surface of the lids.

It is hard to see in the photo, but the brilliance appeared. Exactly what is needed!

At this stage, I thoroughly cover all the covers (on top, where there is a stencil) with spray varnish.
I'm waiting for it to dry.

When the lacquer is dry, using the "Crystal" moment glue, I glue the previously painted decors onto the large lid: flowers, filigree, twigs, etc.

With the same paints that were used to paint the covers, I paint the glued decors. In the same order - first dark green, then more, more and more white.

I add some gold. And I carefully varnish the entire lid (top) again with aerosol varnish.

When the varnish on our flowers has dried up, I begin to decorate the composition with all sorts of beads, beads, microbeads and rhinestones (mainly green in order to withstand the style of the caskets).

I divided the metal fittings into two parts. I paint the accessories that will not be attached to the lids in the color of the lids, and vice versa, I leave the accessories that will be attached to the lids in their native bronze color.
I didn’t take off how to “plant” the fittings on self-tapping screws, I think everything is clear here anyway. I put on the loops, screwed the legs and corners, glued the cutting.

That's it!

How I like how moderately burnt plywood looks.

I varnished everything so that now, it seems to me, you can sit down on this composition.

Photo closer so that all strazinki considered.

By the way, here (in these corners) you can insert a photo of the first ultrasound. I deliberately curved the corners so that the photo was easily inserted there.
It is better, of course, to laminate the ultrasound photo, so it will be more durable.

Almost all metal fittings are also trimmed with green rhinestones.

Every woman and girl has a personal box in which she keeps jewelry, cosmetics or other things. You can buy a box in the store or create a unique item with your own hands. To do this is not so difficult. The main thing is to choose the most appropriate way of decorating.

Handmade jewelry box in classic style

Shabby chic style is gaining more and more popularity every year.

You can decorate the boxes with anything. Buttons, paper flowers, beautiful napkins, lace fabric, clay, beads, beads, colored glass, coins and so on are useful for decoration. The uniqueness of the jewelry is limited only by the imagination of the master. Of course, the set of tools and materials will largely depend on the decoration technique.

In most cases, the caskets are made of wood. To get a well-executed creation, special attention will need to be paid to the initial stage of preparation:

Light motifs of nature on a box in the style of Provence

Stylish box made from improvised means

The most popular is the decoupage technique, known to masters for several centuries. Napkins, beautiful pictures, pieces of fabric are useful for decoration. Both a professional and a novice master can decorate a box using decoupage technique.

You can create a relief cover of the box with your own hands. In this case, come in handy: relief paste or modeling gels, stones, shells, beads and other volumetric elements.

If you have at least minimal artistic skills, then the box can be painted. There are many styles: Khokhloma, Gzhel, Gorodets painting. You can draw your own unique composition.

Mohair fabric inside the box

Chic vintage jewelry box created using decoupage technique

Such a box will perfectly complement the interior.

Decoupage

To work, you will need the following materials:

  • napkins, magazine clippings or scraps of fabric;
  • PVA glue;
  • acrylic paint;
  • brushes;
  • scissors;
  • sandpaper.

At the first stage, the box is prepared for decoration. The surface must be perfectly smooth, as subsequently all defects may become more noticeable. When the product is prepared and dried, you can proceed to the design:

  1. Cut and try on elements of the composition from napkins or fabric.
  2. Attach the cutout to the surface and carefully apply the glue, smoothing the paper from the center to the edges. If fabric is used in the decoupage technique, then glue will not work, it is better to take a stapler and attach the fabric to the inner lining of the box.
  3. Dry the product.
  4. Coat with varnish (if using fabric, this step is not necessary).

Using the decoupage technique, the box can be decorated both outside and inside.

Advice! For decoupage, you can use various photos. But first it is better to remove the bottom layer so that the paper is thinner.

Stylish vintage never goes out of style

A box with mohair fabric will be both practical and a wonderful decor for the interior.

Vinyl wallpapers

For the decoration of boxes, you can use the remnants of vinyl wallpaper. Thanks to simple actions, you can make a unique item with a "metal" coating. For this you will need:

  • wallpaper;
  • PVA glue;
  • towel (preferably disposable paper ones);
  • acrylic paints of several colors (black, bronze, scarlet, silver, green, gold);

You can decorate both the entire box as a whole, and certain elements. To perform the work, take the following steps:

  1. Cut out pieces from the wallpaper, taking into account the allowances for the sides.
  2. To glue the surface in an even layer, glue is applied to the back of the paper. Glue can be slightly diluted with water. The base should be very well saturated with the resulting solution.
  3. The paper needs to lie down a little, and then it is pressed tightly against the box with a sponge.

Important! It is imperative to ensure that bubbles do not appear.

This handmade box will be an unusual gift for family and friends.

Classic box in vintage style

Vintage box made in the technique of craquelure

After the described actions, the product should dry out and then really give the box a metal look.

Attention! The paint is applied with wet towels, it should lie unevenly.

  1. Initially, black acrylic paint is applied as a base. You can use a dark color in a spray can.
  2. With the help of towels, the box is covered in red and dried.
  3. The next layer is silver, and then bronze.
  4. After that (in a small amount!) Black and red colors are repeated
  5. Now carefully, using a damp towel, cover the entire box in green.
  6. The last layer is gold.

After the box dries, it is varnished.

Exquisite jewelry box decorated using decoupage and craquelure technique

Box in Provence style, made in different colors

painting

To paint a product, it is not necessary to have the talent of an artist. In addition, stencils can be used to decorate the box. You can choose absolutely any image, it all depends on your imagination and preferences. For work you will need:

  • box or box;
  • primer;
  • acrylic paints;
  • brushes;
  • stencil (you can make it yourself or buy it in a specialized store);
  • masking tape;
  • sandpaper.

Advice! It is better to pre-treat the box with sandpaper and varnish.

One of the features of the shabby chic style is floral motifs.

Standard mustard-colored box with ribbons - simple and beautiful

Stylish box made using decoupage technique

The work includes several stages:

  1. Primer coating.
  2. Sanding.
  3. Tape the bottom corners.
  4. Finished with light acrylic paint.

Important! Acrylic is applied evenly.

  1. After drying, the surface is treated with sandpaper and a layer of paint is applied a tone darker. This layer should be liquid so that you can then wet it with a sponge, giving the surface a texture.
  2. Fix the base with varnish.
  3. Masking tape covers the parts of the box that will not be decorated.
  4. The selected stencil is fixed.
  5. The drawing is carefully painted over. The paint should be thick, water is used in a minimal amount.

Perhaps, after drying, the drawing will have to be repainted, since the first time the color is likely to be pale. If the stencil is a small element of the composition, then the action will have to be repeated several times. After the painting has dried, the box is varnished.

This master class allows you to create a product whose surface looks like fabric. This is achieved due to the fact that between the main layers the box is varnished, and the paint does not impregnate the wood.

The box decorated with beads and leaves looks very beautiful

This type of decoration of the box will be an excellent addition to the interior or an original gift.

Volumetric decor

The next master class is devoted to creating volumetric decor with your own hands. Here again the decoupage technique will be used. For work you will need:

  • casket;
  • printout of the picture in two copies (on glossy and matte photo paper);
  • acrylic paints (it is better to choose glossy);
  • putty;
  • palette knife;
  • sandpaper;
  • acrylic paints of different colors;
  • brushes of different numbers (No. 1 - a must!);
  • felt on an adhesive basis;
  • lace, ribbons;
  • thick glue;
  • scissors;
  • primer;
  • masking tape;
  • transparent, quick-drying and reliable glue (you can use "Moment").

The surface is pre-prepared with sandpaper. At this stage, it is worth considering that the paint will give a certain thickness to the walls and the lid may not close tightly. Therefore, at the junction, it is necessary to sand the tree especially carefully. After that, the surface is primed.

Shabby chic style combines a large number of details

Decorating the box with beads will make it brighter and more presentable.

Provence blue box

Registration is carried out in several stages:

Advice! If folds cannot be avoided, then you can drive them away to different leaves or flower petals, and then “hide” them behind the drawing.

  1. The dried surface is fixed with varnish.
  2. To create volume, putty or structural paste is applied to certain elements of the pattern. The layer should not exceed three millimeters. Leave an indent from the edge.
  3. The bulges are treated with sandpaper.
  4. From the second drawing, images are cut out along the contour, which should be three-dimensional and glued to the lid.
  5. After drying, the contours are drawn with acrylic paints.
  6. The rest of the product is decorated and varnished.

Thanks to the master class, you can easily make an original box with a three-dimensional pattern with your own hands.

Video: DIY box decor

The caskets were originally intended for storing jewelry and expensive things, so they were mainly in the homes of wealthy gentlemen.

The variety of shapes, sizes and materials used to make the boxes was amazing. They were made of gold and silver, inlaid with diamonds and other precious stones. There were also simpler boxes made of wood. Centuries have passed, but the fashion for these original and elegant products has survived to this day.

It is noteworthy, but making a wooden box with your own hands is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. The main thing is to apply a little skill and connect your own imagination.

Where to begin

The manufacture of any craft begins with a project, a diagram. The master imagines exactly what his masterpiece will be, and already, starting from the drawings, stocks up with the necessary materials and tools.

For many inhabitants, a wooden box appears to be a rectangular box with a closing lid. It is, but not quite. The box is a real work of art, and even a handicraft made from improvised materials can look like an expensive antique.

Any box has its purpose in the house. Based on this message, the master thinks over the shape of the product. Here are the possible options:

  • for jewelry. Such wooden models are traditionally rectangular in shape, but the inner surfaces are lined with velvet, and the lid is complemented by a mirror. As a result, jewelry is not scratched and it is convenient to try it on;
  • for bijouterie, trinkets. A characteristic feature of such a product are drawers that move freely inside the case. The number of sliding elements is unlimited, and a tight fit does not require special guides;
  • small casket for dear to the heart, memorabilia. It is made in the form of a heart and is great for storing letters, postcards, photos and other things;
  • Puzzle . A rather complex product that simultaneously serves as a decorative ornament and a children's toy. A system of wooden gears is installed here, resembling a clockwork, and the lid opens after the handle or one of the wheels is rotated;
  • to hide a small amount of money. It is made in the form of a rectangle, but the outer finish is made to look like a book;
  • for needles, thread. These wooden boxes usually have several compartments where you can store sewing accessories. The case is often complemented by a carrying handle.

In addition, there are caskets with watches, locks and secrets, original boxes and boxes for storing cigars, products that make melodic sounds when the lid is opened. The shape is not limited to rectangular. In fact, with modern tools for woodworking, it can be anything, including round.

It is noteworthy that all of these options can be done independently at home. But still, it’s better to start learning how to make wooden boxes with your own hands from simple designs, complicating the task as craftsmanship skills appear.

How to make a classic box

Even a teenager with minimal skills in handling woodworking tools can cope with this task. Such a box is made of multilayer plywood, while the selected sheet should not have visible damage: knots, cracks.

At the initial stage, you will need a pencil and a ruler. In order not to complicate the task, it is better to choose the correct shape geometry for the walls, lid and bottom, for example, a square or a rectangle. The outlines of four walls are drawn on a sheet of plywood: 2 side walls are shorter and 2 front walls are longer.

Note! The sides of the bottom are calculated in such a way that after gluing the sidewalls, it is recessed inside the walls.

Then all the drawn elements are carefully cut with a jigsaw, the irregularities are processed with sandpaper. To make the end and side walls beautifully interconnected, small grooves can be made at the edges of the ends, corresponding to the thickness of the plywood sheet. This tip will help to give the case a monolithic look and overall make the structure stronger. The walls are glued together, then the bottom of the box is placed. If the lower part comes in with difficulty, the edges are filed. The landing of the bottom should be tight.

After that, proceed to the manufacture of the cover. To make the design more original, it is better to choose the option of not a flat, but a deep cover. For this, the scheme described above is used. A large blank is cut out, which will be directly the lid, end and side walls. In fact, it turns out a reduced copy of the body of the box. All parts are treated with sandpaper, glued together. The lid is attached to the body with small hinges. After assembly, the finished product is varnished or painted in any color that you like.

Similarly, you can make a box of solid wood. To do this, use a wooden board. It must be sanded and cut into blanks of the required size. Wood is more difficult to cut with a jigsaw, it is better to use a circular saw. Curly edges can be made with a router.

If you need a box

In general, a wooden box with a drawer is made in the same way as the classic version, but there are a number of features here.

The simple rectangular shape of the lid and bottom will spoil the appearance of the product. The long sides of these elements are best made wavy using an electric router. In addition, by choosing this option, the lid and bottom are not placed inside the case, but left outside.

The walls are made in different heights. In particular, the back and ends are made of the same height, glued together. For the front wall, a die is cut out half the width of the back. This element is not recessed between the ends, but is overlapped and fixed with glue.

The box consists of two parts: a box that fits freely between the walls, and the front part is similar in size to the top plate. Elements are also planted on wood glue.

A partition is installed between the upper and lower parts, which will serve as the bottom of the upper compartment of the box. Inside the sliding and stationary drawers, you can make partitions from thin plywood, delimiting the internal space into several compartments. The lid is mounted on decorative hinges, the wood is covered with several layers of furniture varnish.

How to decorate with carvings

Carved boxes look much more original and interesting, but such work requires certain skills and knowledge. For beginners who decide to try their hand at woodcarving, experienced craftsmen recommend starting with simple geometric shapes and large patterns. With a certain amount of patience, even a novice master will be able to cope with such a task.

The drawing is applied to the surface with a pencil, each line is well drawn. After that, with an oblique knife or chisel, the pattern is carefully cut out in strict accordance with the applied markings. Small flaws and irregularities can be corrected with a file or fine sandpaper.

How to put a padlock

An interesting solution is a mortise lock, which will be opened with a small key, but such work is difficult to perform even for an experienced specialist. Therefore, it is better to limit yourself to a padlock or a decorative hook.

To install a padlock, loops are placed in the central part of the side wall and cover, which are screwed with small screws. The location of the loops must first be calculated: even a slight shift will break the symmetry, and the box will lose its attractiveness.

Making a box of complex shape from solid wood will take much more time. To do this, you must definitely use a power tool, while plywood parts can be cut even with a manual jigsaw. The artist has a large field of work to design the finished product. You can paint it with paints, attach decorative fittings, perform decoupage or burning.
