How to make sliding gates: step by step instructions with drawings. Do-it-yourself installation of sliding gates Do-it-yourself sliding gates

Sliding gates are very popular at the present time, although in the recent past, few could afford to install such a structure on the site, due to the high cost of fittings and mechanisms. Now their cost is much lower and availability is higher, and a person with welding skills can make them with their own hands. The absence of upper and lower guides in sliding gates gives an advantage to the passage of vehicles of almost any size.

Sliding gates - principle of operation and design

The principle of operation of the gate: the leaf moves on two roller carts mounted on a concreted channel. Top rollers are used to protect against falling and tilting. In the closed state, to relieve the load from the roller bearings, an end roller is installed on the guide, which drives into the lower catcher when the gate is closed. The upper catcher is installed for more reliable fixation of the gate in the closed state. The full size of the gate is 150% of the width of the opening, that is, if we have an opening of 4 m, then the total width of the gate leaf will be 6 m and, accordingly, the place for rollback should be at least 6 m. Perhaps this is the main drawback of this type of gate and if there is not enough places it is worth considering other options.

Design drawing and diagram

Before manufacturing the gate, it is necessary to determine the dimensions of the future gate, make a drawing indicating these dimensions. The gate consists of a power frame and a crate (internal frame). The frame is usually made of a rectangular profile pipe 60*30 mm and 2 mm thick, and pipes 60*40 mm or 50*50 mm can also be used if the required size is not available. For the inner frame, a profile pipe 40 * 20 or 30 * 20 is suitable, depending on which one is available.

An example of a connection diagram for gate parts:

Selection and calculation of materials with fittings

Let's take the drawing above as an example. For the frame we will use profiled pipes of rectangular section 60 * 30 with a thickness of 2 mm. We calculate the total length of the pipe for the frame based on the dimensions in the drawing 4200 * 2 + 1800 + 1865 \u003d 12065 mm, we calculate the length of the hypotenuse of the triangular part using the formula c \u003d √b 2 + a 2 √1800 2 +1865 2 \u003d 2591 mm, 12065 + 2591 =14656 mm. The total turned out to be 14.66 meters in meters, this is with regard to the frame.

For the inner frame, we take a pipe 40 * 20 and now we calculate the total length 4200 * 3 + 1865 * 4 = 2060 mm or 20.6 m. All dimensions are taken with a small cape.

Accessories are complex and unprofitable in self-production and are usually bought in stores of the corresponding profile. When choosing fittings, you need to know the approximate weight of the future design for the competent selection of rollers that can easily withstand this weight.

Almost any material can be used for the internal lining of the gate, but most often a profile sheet is used for these purposes, popularly called "corrugated board". Decking can be ordered in any size and color, it is quite light and has an anti-corrosion coating. For the gate in our example, you need a sheet with dimensions of 7.833 m 2. To fasten the corrugated board, you will need self-tapping screws with a drill or rivets. For a mortgage, you need to purchase a section of a channel with a width of 16–20 cm and a length equal to half the opening of the gate, in our case at least 2 meters. The reinforcement for the foundation frame should be taken with a diameter of 12–16 mm and a length of 15. To mix concrete for the foundation, you will need cement, sand and crushed stone in a ratio of 1: 2.1: 3.9. For the foundation of the gate from the example, 0.5 m 3 of concrete is needed.

Required tool

  • Welding machine, preferably semi-automatic.
  • Bulgarian with cutting and grinding discs.
  • Screwdriver or riveter.
  • Hammer, tape measure, white marker.
  • Concrete mixer, bayonet and shovel.
  • Protection for eyes and hands.

Do-it-yourself instructions for the manufacture and installation of sliding gates

First you need to cut the pipes according to the dimensions given in the drawing, using a grinder. Be sure to use protective equipment.

When finished cutting, lay the pipes on a horizontal surface or stands, as in the figure above, to form a frame according to the drawing. After making sure that the layout is correct, we weld all the corners of the frame at several points, then completely weld the joints. Now you need to grind the places of the welds. The inner surface of the frame, where the frame will be attached, must first be primed with an anti-corrosion primer, since later, when the frame rises, access will be impossible.

Using the same method, we weld the frame and also clean and prime it only from the outside.

Connecting the frame to the frame

First, let's decide how the gate leaf will be sewn up - only from the front or from both sides. If only from the front, the frame should be welded flush with the front side of the frame, when from two, then in the middle. Let's take both sides. We measure the distance and make marks inside the frame where the frame should be. Inside the frame lying horizontally, we lay the finished frame in the middle of the frame, adjusting it according to the marks with substrates from pieces of a wooden bar. Adjusted, checked, now you need to connect the frame to the frame with welding points around the perimeter in increments of about 45–60 cm so that the frame and frame do not lead. We weld in sections of 1 cm crosswise until the step between them is 15-16 cm, and only then we weld the joints completely. Now we will weld the guide rails from the hardware kit to the bottom of the frame. We will weld in the same way as the frame to the frame.

Painting

The next step is to prepare the frame for painting. First, we clean all the welds with a grinder to an acceptable look. Degrease the entire frame and prime with an anti-corrosion primer. After the primer layer has dried, you can start painting. For painting, it is better to use alkyd enamels, but acrylic paints are also quite suitable. You can paint with a spray gun, brush or small roller. Coloring is carried out in 2 layers, applying the next layer after the previous one has dried.

sheathing

You can start sewing the door leaf. We fix the profile sheet, cut to size, with self-tapping screws with a drill or rivets. First, we fix the sheet in the corners, and then fasten it around the perimeter and along the inner frame in increments of 15–20 cm.

Foundation

You can start pouring the foundation. We dig a hole with a length of at least half of the gate opening, in our case at least 2 m, a width of 0.5 m and a depth of 0.7–1 m. We start preparing the mortgage - there is nothing complicated here. Here's what the finished mortgage looks like:

We place the mortgage in the pit and check with a level that the channel is in a horizontal plane and on the same level with the yard area, so we will provide an even base for the carriages. We mix concrete with a concrete mixer in the proportion: 1 part of cement, 2.1 sand, 3.9 crushed stone. The resulting brand of concrete M250. We fill the hole completely, not forgetting to often pierce the concrete with a piece of reinforcement or a wooden lath for better penetration and filling voids. The foundation must stand for at least 10 days, and the total period of drying and curing of concrete is 28 days. The next day and the next 3-4 days, it is necessary to water the foundation with water to avoid cracking the concrete.

Mounting

The foundation is ready - you can proceed with the installation. On the mortgage we place 2 carriages at the maximum distance from each other. We expose the gate on the carriages, inserting them into the guide rail. Now you need to adjust the carriages. The one closest to the opening is placed so that the gate, when fully opened, does not reach its edge 15-20 cm to the carriage. Another carriage is placed so that when the gate is fully closed, their edge does not reach the carriage by 5 cm. We check the installation with a level and tack it with welding. When we checked that the whole structure is right, we weld the joint of the carriage and the mortgage completely.

The next steps are to fasten the remaining parts. The upper protective rollers are attached to the mortgage in the post, if it is provided, when there is no mortgage, you must first fix the metal plate on the anchor bolts, it will act as a mortgage. The top rollers are usually welded to the mortgage.

It is possible to weld a pipe section 30*20 on top of a 60 * 30 pipe and weld the upper rollers to it. In this way, we will get a more reliable mount.

On the opposite post, we attach to the mortgages a section of a profile pipe 30 * 20 with a length equal to the height of the gate leaf, and directly to the pipe the upper and lower catchers. We fix the lower catcher 5 mm higher than the end roller is located, so that when hitting the catcher, the gate rises, thus partially removing the load from the carriages.

The upper catcher is attached to the pipe 5-7 cm below the top of the gate to protect it from fluctuations in the wind.

The guide is closed on one side and the other with rubber plugs that come with the fittings.

Automatic gate opening

For ease of use, you can make an automatic drive for opening the gate, nowadays the market offers a large selection of such drives, and choosing something for yourself with a good price-quality balance is not difficult. It is best to entrust the installation of the drive to a specialist in this matter, although you can figure it out yourself, since the drive comes with detailed instructions for connecting the engine itself, sensors and mounting the gear rack.

The power of the purchased drive, depending on the weight of the sliding gate, can be found in the table:

Table: dependence of motor power on gate weight

But still it is better to buy a drive with a power reserve.

It is no secret that sliding gates designed and assembled independently will cost much less than those ordered from a company for the production and installation of such gates. We control the quality of execution ourselves, so that everything can be adjusted to millimeters, thereby producing a quality product for our own use.

Cantilever gates that open by moving the guide along roller supports away from the opening are called differently: sliding gates, sliding gates, cantilever sliding gates. The article is useful for those who are interested in how to make sliding gates with their own hands and contains instructions for installing sliding gates. Below are the scheme of sliding gates, drawings of sliding gates, recommendations for preparing the opening, scheme of the foundation of sliding gates, recommendations for mounting sliding gates.

  1. guide beam
  2. Roller support (trolley)
  3. Removable end roller
  4. Bottom catcher
  5. Top catcher
  6. Upper retainer with rollers (bracket)
  7. Stand

On the foundation for sliding (retractable) gates, two bearing roller bearings are installed. A guide beam is welded to the lower edge of the sliding gate leaf. Supports perceive the main load from the gate and ensure the movement of the sash. Supports are mounted on supports or with the help of embedded bolts.

In the cantilevered part, the gates are mounted on load-bearing roller bearings. The support rollers are located inside the carrier beam. Sliding gates of this design are easy to open manually, it ensures reliable operation of the drive in winter.

A prerequisite for the manufacture of sliding gates

The gate leaf must be rigid in order to withstand weight and wind loads. The canvas should not bend under its own weight. The guide is welded to the rigid sash.

Sliding gate drawings

For the manufacture of the outer frame of the gate, a profile pipe 60x40x2 mm is used, the crate is made of a pipe 20x20x1.5 mm. A drawing of the gate frame for an opening 3 meters wide is shown below:

A guide is welded to the finished structure of the gate frame (the drawing shows the ECO guide from ROLTEK)

Choice of accessories

The type of components for sliding metal gates is selected based on the total weight of the installed gate, the width of the opening to be blocked and the height of the gate tight. The main structural element of sliding gates, which determines the performance and durability, is the guide. We recommend using accessories for Rolltek gates.

Manufacturing and installation

You can make sliding self-supporting gates with your own hands and install sliding gates, knowing some of the features of the installation and design of sliding gates. The sliding gate leaf moves along the fence from the side of the site (house). Therefore, it is necessary to provide a place where the door leaf will roll back.

In the diagram - an option with the right side of the gate rollback. The gate moves along the fence from the inside of the territory, so it is necessary to provide that their movement is not interfered with. The distance to which the gate will roll back must be greater than the width of the gate opening by the size of the cantilever part (the part that does not cover the opening and serves as a counterweight).

The length of the cantilever is approximately 1/2 the width of the opening. Accordingly, the section required for the movement of the gate must be at least the width of the opening * 1.5 in length and 400 mm in width, usually enough. If the opening meets the requirements, then you can install sliding gates.

To install sliding gates with your own hands you will need:

  1. Lay the foundation: mark the pit and remove the soil, make and install the embedded element, fill the pit with concrete
  2. If the gate will be automated, do the cabling
  3. Install gate and return post
  4. Install automatic sliding gates

Making a concrete base

Marking the pit for the foundation for sliding gates

On the rollback side of the gate, starting from the edge of the opening, along the fence, set aside a distance equal to half the width of the passage (this is the length of the concrete base). Step back from the plane of the fence about 500 mm deep into the territory, along the entire length of this segment, and you will get the perimeter of the pit necessary for making the foundation of the sliding gate.

If the fence posts cannot be used as support for sliding gates, on the opposite side of the opening, opposite the pit for the concrete base, mark the pit for the return post. The pit should be located in such a way that the pole installed in it can adjoin the fence line from the inside without narrowing the opening.

If the gate will be automated, then it is necessary to provide for the possibility of laying a cable under the roadway between the pillars. For these purposes, use a metal or plastic pipe with an inner diameter of at least 25 mm.

Excavation

The soil is removed to a depth exceeding the freezing depth, at least 200 mm. For the Moscow region, the freezing depth is 1.5 m, respectively, the depth of the foundation pit is at least 1.7 m.

Production of a mortgage element

For the manufacture of the embedded element, you will need a channel 16, equal to the length of the pit for a concrete base, and reinforcement d 12 for ties and reinforcement bars. First, we weld pieces of reinforcement or corners to the workpiece from the channel, approximately 1500 mm long.

Installing the embedded element in the finished pit

We lower the resulting structure into the pit with the reinforcement down and fix it so that the side surface of the channel fits snugly against the existing fence post. The body of the channel must be strictly horizontal (use a spirit level) and parallel to the line of movement of the gate.

Particular attention should be paid to the level of the upper plane of the embedded element relative to the level of the road surface in the gate opening. The clearance from the roadway to the lower edge of the gate depends on the level and height of the embedded element.

If the embedded element is installed flush with the level of the road surface, then when using adjusting platforms, the minimum clearance under the gate (the distance from the road surface to the bottom edge of the door leaf) will be 100-110 mm. It is possible to increase the gap by several centimeters with the help of adjusting platforms, but it will not be possible to reduce the gap (provided that the support rollers are fastened in a manufacturable way).

If the standard gap of 70-100 mm does not suit you, it is necessary to install the embedded element at a level below the carriageway at the desired distance.

Separately, I would like to dwell on cases where fence posts cannot be used as support for sliding gates or when the upper edge of the gate is decorated with a “crown” or peaks, as well as on cases where there is a need to install two support posts.

It is necessary to prepare one or two supporting posts, depending on the case that suits the situation (weak posts or wide gates). The size of the posts must be 50 mm more than the height from the foundation to the top edge of the gate. Finished poles (or pole) are installed in the pit and connected to the embedded element as shown in the figure.

Embedded part for sliding gates with two supporting pillars.

Filling the hole with concrete

After you have installed the embedded element, you need to fill the pit with concrete. The level of concrete in the pit should not cover the surface of the embedded element. After you have filled the mortgages with concrete, you must give the concrete time to harden, at least 6 days.

Gate installation

Define and mark the line of movement of the gate

Pull the cord along the opening, marking the entire line of movement of the gate leaf. In this case, the distance from the return post to the cord should be 20-30 mm. The cord is best placed at a height of 150-200 mm. This will be a tangent line to the outer edge of the carrier profile.

Preparing roller trolleys for installation

Fix the adjusting pads on the caster platform as shown in the figure.

Determining the boundaries of the position of the roller bearings

From the edge of the opening, along the plane of the embedded element, retreat 150 mm and draw a line. This will be the tangent to the front edge of the first roller. The end position of the second roller bearing is determined as follows: it is necessary to measure the total length of the door, including the cantilever part; subtract 100 mm from this size; set aside the resulting segment, starting from the edge of the counter post, through the opening, on the plane of the embedded element. This will be the tangent to the outer edge of the second roller.

Assembly

Insert the roller trolleys prepared for assembly into the carrier profile one after the other. Move them to the center of the gate. Place the gate vertically, with roller bearings on the embedded element. Install the first and second supports close to the corresponding tangents, and the gate, parallel and close to the cord.

Adjusting the horizontal position of the shield and the position of the roller bearings

Weld on the adjusting pads of the second roller bearing. Then roll the gate all the way into the opening and make final adjustments to the horizontal position of the gate, if necessary. After that, it is necessary to grab the adjusting platforms of the first roller bearing.

  1. Remove the sliding door leaf from the roller bearings.
  2. We remove the roller bearings from the adjusting platforms.
  3. We weld, along the contour, the adjusting platforms, welding them to the embedded element.
  4. We fix the roller bearings on the adjusting platforms.
  5. Slide the sliding gate leaf onto the roller bearings.
  6. Install the gate in the closed position.
  7. Set the level on the plane of the carrier profile, and with a wrench, set the sliding gate leaf to the horizon using the adjusting platforms (raising or lowering, relative to each other, the roller carts on the studs of the adjusting platforms).

* The horizontal position of the sliding gate is set only for the closed state of the gate.

Adjusting the position of the roller bearings inside the carrier profile

Loosen the fastenings of the roller bearings to the adjusting platforms (top nuts only) and roll the gate in the range from the extreme closed to the extreme open position. This is done so that the roller bearings take the correct position inside the carrier profile. After making sure that the gate rolls easily, tighten the fasteners of the roller bearings.

After that, check if there are any undesirable changes in the rolling quality of the gate. If after pulling the sliding gate leaf began to move worse, be sure to loosen the fasteners and eliminate possible distortions of the roller bearings on the fasteners.
*Particular attention should be paid to the plane transverse to the movement of the gate.

Installing the End Roller and Carrier Profile End Cap

Insert the end roller inside the carrier profile, from the front edge of the door leaf, and tighten the fixing bolts. And put a welding point between the end roller cover and the carrier profile. Welding is necessary because when manually using sliding gates, the end roller is often the end stop. And, given the inertia of the door leaf, the bolted connection will not hold the end roller in place.

On the rear side of the gate, it is necessary to install and weld the end cap of the carrier profile. The plug is supplied with the gate. It is necessary to install a plug so that in winter, when opening the gate, snow does not accumulate inside the carrier profile. Since if this happens, then at the moment of closing, the snow rolled by rollers can jam the gate.

Installing the Top Guide Bracket

Weaken the fasteners of the rollers of the guide bracket. We install it above the door leaf so that the rollers wrap around the upper edge of the leaf, and the side of the guide bracket with holes for fasteners should be directed towards the support post. Attach the bracket to the support post. Attach the bracket to the support post. Using a level, set the door leaf to a vertical position and fix it with the rollers of the guide bracket.

Door leaf sheathing

If the sliding gates are sheathed, then the next step is to mount the profiled sheet on the frame. The sheet can be ordered cut to size in height and width. Installation of sheets must begin from the front edge of the gate. The sheet is inserted inside the frame perimeter and fastened to the gate crate with metal screws or riveted. The second is preferable.

After the first sheet is fixed, we install the second sheet overlay on the first one by one wave and fasten it. We continue laying and mounting sheets sequentially until the canvas is filled. If the last sheet does not fit into the perimeter, then it is cut to size

Installation of the upper and lower catchers

The lower catcher is designed to partially remove the load from the roller bearings at the moment when the gate is in the closed state. Its installation is carried out only with a fully loaded gate. To determine the position of the lower catcher, close the gate and move it from below under the end roller until it touches firmly. The reference plane of the catcher must not be higher than the position of the end roller.

The upper catcher is designed to keep the door leaf from swinging under sail loads in the closed position. The upper catcher is mounted at the level of the protective corners installed on the front edge of the web, so that in the closed position these corners touch the upper catcher brackets.

Installation of automation

In order for the electric drive to move the sliding gate leaf, a toothed rack is attached to it. This part is universal and suitable for electric gate drives of any manufacturer. The rail is sold in pieces of 1 meter complete with fasteners.

A gate with a retractable or, as it is also called, a sliding system is an integral part of the design, designed to fence the dacha and adjacent areas.

To date, the range of such structures is extensive, but many craftsmen want to make their own gates of this type.

This is connected not only with the economic point of view, but also in connection with the application of creative energy. Therefore, many people ask how to make a sliding gate with your own hands and in a short time?

Types of sliding gates

Retractable produce in different forms, which have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Cantilever gate

Cantilever gate design allows not to limit the upper dimensions of the product, and also excludes contact with the lower rail passing close to the ground surface.

This is one of the most difficult designs to complete. The basis of such gates is a console or, as it is also called, a channel. These devices hold the structure leaf when opening and closing the gate.

In modern gates with this type of movement, there are no lower and upper guides, which provides the car with free movement on the territory of the yard. The canvas is suspended on a special beam, standing on rollers that move the surface of the product.

Roller blocks and guide beams are usually placed in the bottom section of the gate. Often there are similar retractable mechanisms with the strengthening of the rollers and beams in the upper or even in the middle part.

Such placement is justified when it comes to a wall with capital properties or a canvas with increased strength, which can withstand the bulky weight of the structure.

For home use, it is best to do the bottom movement so that you do not have to carry out additional work to strengthen the wall.

These gates last longer than others, because the sliding structure completely enters the guide grooves, which protect the product from the atmospheric effects of the external environment.

Cantilever gates are often equipped with an electric drive. It is attached between the roller carriages. The drive has a control unit and special devices to ensure the safety of movement.

Positive sides such gates are obvious:

On console systems there are shortcomings, but there are few of them:

  • the design of such gates is difficult to make with your own hands;
  • installation of the gate involves a free area for a gap, which is one and a half times larger than the opening itself. This is not always feasible;
  • need for a strong foundation.

Hanging gate

Hanging system sliding gates are popular in warehouses, businesses and garage docks. The principle of operation of such a mechanism is almost the same as that of conventional sliding gates, with only one difference - the guide beam is attached at the top of the opening.

When choosing elements for fastening the structure, you need to purchase only high-quality products.

The material suitable for this type of gate is recommended to be chosen from steel with additional galvanization and PVC coating for resistance to negative natural factors.

The gates open along the wall, so they do not need additional space from the inside and outside. If desired, this design can be equipped with an electric drive for ease of use.

Benefits of hanging sliding gates:

  1. Suspended designs significantly save space.
  2. The strength of the gate allows it to withstand wind loads.
  3. There is no need for additional cleaning of the entrance in front of the house from snow.

Roller structures

Gates with roller mechanism are more popular for entering the yard than in the garage, because the width of the garage wall does not always allow you to place a solid sash and place the entire mechanism to the side when the structure is opened.

For the yard, this is an ideal option due to space saving and ease of use of the device. When the button is pressed, the roller mechanism works so that the fence moves to the side.

If you equip the device with automatic control, you can influence it using the remote control.

The gate structure consists of a guide profile attached to the lower part of the product, a bearing-based roller mechanism, a frame leaf and other elements that fasten and hold the structure.

rail gate

The principle of operation of rail gates is to slide the protective cloth over the surface of a special rail located on the surface of the earth. The movement is due to the roller welded to the bottom of the product.

Of all types of gates with a sliding system rail mechanism is the simplest and most popular. It is often used at the entrance to private homes.

Such a mechanism has a number of advantages:

  • the sash has a support, so it will never sag;
  • the simplicity of the device allows it to be made by a master who does not have much experience;
  • the sash does not take up much space and is equal to the width of the entrance opening.

Flaws such devices:

  • the operation of the sash can be disturbed by debris or snow cover;
  • the rail that guides the web must be cleaned regularly;
  • the rail laid on top of the ground cover protrudes slightly, making it difficult for a vehicle to enter.

Sliding gates, consisting of two parts

Sliding gates are sometimes made of two parts. This operating principle allows you to save space in the width of the wall, since the gate is divided into two parts.

The design can also be equipped with automation, and open with a remote control. Drives on electric bases are installed in each gate leaf.

Construction and arrangement of gates with a sliding mechanism

One of the most popular gates are cantilever, the design of which consists of the following elements:

Making sliding gates with your own hands

Preparation for work start by checking the necessary tools:

All of these tools can be found in every home, with the exception of a welding machine. You can ask friends or neighbors for it. If funds allow, it is better to buy it, such a tool will never be superfluous.

Creating a drawing and diagram

If all the necessary tools are available, you can proceed to counting the building materials that need to be purchased on the construction market and the metal depot.

The frame is being made by welding first pipes 60x40 millimeters, 6 meters long to the guide. Next, two vertical pipes 60x40 millimeters, 2 meters each, are attached, the first to the edge, the second - at a distance of 4.4 meters from the edge of the horizontal pipe.

A horizontal one, 4.4 meters long, is attached to the upper ends of these pipes. The free edge of the lower horizontal pipe and the edge of the upper one are connected at an angle by a pipe of 2.56 meters.

The frame fabric must be filled with vertical pipes 40x20 mm. Next, move on to the power frame.

The foundation for the future structure must be prepared by digging a U-shaped pit with a depth of at least one and a half meters.

A section with an opening of four meters should be equal to six meters. road clearance you need to draw at least seventy-five millimeters.

power frame is prepared from a channel (2.2 meters long and 20 centimeters wide) and reinforcement, the height of which is 1.5 meters, in mutually perpendicular directions.

This structure is concreted and a platform for the drive and a stand are welded to it. Next, the lower rollers are attached to the stand and the upper roller to the column. Upper and lower traps are attached to the column opposite to the moving gate.

last element circuit is automatic and gear rack.

Material selection

Having drawn a diagram of the proposed design, you need to carefully study the material for the frame and door leaf.

The frame is made of wood or profile pipes.

The inner part of the gate is created from:

When choosing a material from forged elements or wooden components, it is important to remember that such a design requires reinforced parts of components and additional fittings.

Screw piles are often used in sliding sliding gates, and such supports are made within three or four days. If you use a concrete base, such work is carried out in the warm and dry season.

It takes a month for the material to dry completely., and this significantly delays the installation of sliding gates.

That's why screw piles are more practical and smarter when installing the gate yourself. Such piles can be moved to different places, and the concrete will remain poured in its original place.

Structures withstand vibrations due to their blades, and the cement base will loosen over time and disrupt the entire propulsion system of the structure.

Foundation made using screw piles is durable, and the installed canvas serves for a long time and without failures. Piles can be installed in weak and water-saturated soil. They cut through the soil to the limit until they find a reliable footing underground.

Installation of screw piles

The main condition for the high-quality installation of screw piles in such a design is rigidity. This condition is due to the fact that the screw piles have an increased load. Material should not go into the ground even under its own weight.

When installing this design, you should use a profile pipe with selected parameters and a pipe crate. The frame is pre-coated with a primer.

Components for gates are selected taking into account the weight and height of the product. The canvas moves to the side along the guide, it is its quality that determines how long the structure will last.

It is important to know that the gate rollback must exceed the size of the opening. This distance is considered to be the measurement indicator of the console, which is equal to the width of the opening.

For the effective operation of the gates installed on screw piles, an appropriate section is required.

The choice of site must be approached thoroughly and with the expectation that the width of the gate must be multiplied by a factor of one point five, then the ideal distance will be obtained. This is important for convenient operation of the product..

Installation of piles produced in several stages:

  1. Foundation laying, which includes marking the territory and cleaning the pits from the soil. Installation of embedded materials and, if necessary, pouring concrete.
  2. If the master plans to install automatic control, electrical cabling.
  3. Sequential installation of poles and the entire gate system.

Estimated movement of the gate system fixed with lacing stretched along the line of the entire opening. The recommended fixation height is two hundred millimeters.

If the pit was filled with a concrete solution, it will take seven days to continue the work until the solution dries completely.

Frame preparation

Metal product for the frame treated with anti-corrosion coating and give it time for the solution to dry on the surface.

You can make the frame yourself, but most importantly, so that the welded elements are without holes in the joints. If there are such holes, dirt and snow will get into them.

The base of the frame consists of pipes measuring 60x40 mm, as shown in the photo with a sketch above. The ribs of the structure and the lintels inside can have a cross section of 20x40 millimeters.

The frame is assembled in the following order:

  1. Profile pipes are measured and cut according to the prepared drawing.
  2. The resulting parts to create a frame product are degreased, painted and treated with a special solvent.
  3. The prepared elements are laid out on a flat surface.
  4. The perimeter of the frame is assembled and tacked with a welding machine.
  5. The corners of the product are checked and, if everything converges, they are finally welded together.
  6. After welding, stiffeners and internal jumpers are installed to the product.
  7. The lower part of the product is connected to the carrier beam.
  8. The surface where welding work was carried out is covered with an anti-corrosion coating and an additional layer of paint.

The manufacture of sliding gates with a wicket gate significantly complicates the entire process of design and installation. Necessary take into account the location of the gate at the earliest stages of work.

Installation of corrugated board

For gate trim you will need, screws 19 mm long and a screwdriver.

If the owner does not want to carry out additional waste of material for the counterweight triangle, this can be abandoned, because it will not be noticeable from the street side.

Automatic gates will look even better if the pillars are sheathed with bricks. With basic knowledge of the masonry process, this is easy to do.

Required fittings

The details necessary to create the gate are best purchased in specialized stores. It doesn't make sense to make them yourself. because it is not justified from an economic point of view.

Before buying a rail mechanism, you need to calculate the required length. It is calculated based on the width of the gate and multiplying the number by 1.5.

Hardware for sliding gates selected based on the weight of the structure. There are parts that can withstand loads of up to four hundred kilograms, and sometimes there are models for forged gates that can withstand up to eight hundred kilograms.

For gates with corrugated sheathing, parts that can withstand up to four hundred kilograms are suitable.

When choosing carriages with a roller mechanism, you need to decide what material they will be created from.

The building materials market offers a choice between metal and polymer materials. It is best to choose a polymer coating, with proper operation, it will last a long time, and will create less noise than metal.

Fastening of flashings

In a brick row, three embedded parts are made for the subsequent installation of a flashing. A reinforcing piece is welded to the pole. A corner is attached to the edge of the reinforcing product in such a way that one part of it is held on the brick, and the other sticks out.

Top and bottom inserts installed at the level of the third bricks, and the middle one is in the middle of the product.

A pipe is welded to the protruding corners - a flashing with dimensions of 60x30 millimeters.

guide rail

It is impossible to produce a rail for moving the structure at home, so you will have to spend money on the purchase of such a part.

When choosing a material, you must first pay attention to the presence of a mirror surface and the right angles. Manufacturers usually care about their reputation and polish products from rust.

Based on the weight and size of the structure, a suitable rail is selected.

Maintenance of the rails is simple: you need to regularly check its surface for dirt and excess debris.

Roller carriages

Roller carriage movement allows you to move the gate system along the opening. Each carriage of the system consists of eight rollers made of metal or polymer coating.

The manufacturing process of the carriage is not difficult: holes are made in the marked metal plates to place the roller mechanism in them.

To create a caret you can use bearings from an old car, for example, from Zhiguli.

If the metal is not strong enough, then the plates are welded. When drilling, it is best to use oil to cool the surface.

Axes and holes are measured and the surface is cut to the desired length. Washers are placed on the axis, then wheels, and the resulting structure is screwed for movement. Before welding the base bearings must be packed tightly with grease.

The process of making homemade rollers for sliding gates is shown in the video:

Catchers and plugs

Metal plates curved in a special way are designed to catch the gate and their fixing after closing. With the right selection and quality of the metal used, it will not be difficult to make such products.

The plugs serve as protection for the guide from snow and mud masses. You can purchase ready-made protective elements made of rubber or plastic material. You can simply weld the ends of the beam material with a welding machine.

Self-manufacturing of fittings is allowed, but on the condition that the master already has experience in carrying out such work.

With a lack of experience, it is better to purchase additional elements in specialized stores from reliable manufacturers.

Frame and gate installation

After completing the creation and preparation of parts and structural elements, it is necessary to assemble the frame and gate.

Carriages are placed on the channel installed in the foundation, while trying to push them apart when strengthening.

The sliding gate frame is attached to the carriages and is set taking into account the level indicators. After that, the platforms of the carriages are lightly welded to the channel system.

After the actions taken, control measurements are made and the platform of the carriages is finally welded.

It is important to monitor the level indicators, which will indicate the presence of distortions in the structure.

After that, the traps of the upper and lower sections are welded, and end rollers are also installed.

Important to remember that the end rollers must enter the lower catcher system so that they completely unload it when the system is closed.

Automatic system in sliding gates

Automatic opening of sliding gates is carried out by a mechanism, equipped with an electric drive. Opening occurs with the help of a button on the remote control. To assemble such a mechanism, any materials from the garage are suitable, and the fastening will take no more than a day.

The signal is supplied by a roller or chain system using an asynchronous motor.

At the preliminary stage of work, you need to select the appropriate engine for the mechanism.

If a three-phase meter with a star-type winding is available, it is recommended to stop at this particular device.

With such a device, you can avoid problems with the movement of the system and improve gate efficiency.

If a three-phase meter is not available, you can use single-phase with a capacitor type. It is important to know that such a device is characterized by poor performance, especially at system startup.

If neither the first nor the second option was found, less expensive materials can be used. We must not forget about the reliable connection of the kinematics. The gear shaft is connected to the engine with a rigid type coupling.

The gearbox can be replaced by a belt drive. This method of assembly work has the difficulty of connecting in tripod elements and the additional involvement of an automobile tensioning mechanism.

The mechanism with an independent shaft is given special importance when using a belt mechanism. Extreme attention must be paid to the centering of the shaft because it has two transmissions.

Self-manufacturing of the electric drive

The most elementary way to install automation of the sliding gate movement process is a chain or, as it is also called, rack and pinion.

A bicycle chain is strengthened on the gear shaft, and another one is installed on top of it, a special one with a diameter in links similar to that present in the sprocket.

The chain is installed in a horizontal plane. Sprocket rotation in one direction or another sets in motion the entire mechanism of the sliding gate.

Strengthening the engine and gearbox is carried out with bolts having special nuts. Support for them must be rigid. Elongated holes are made under the base to securely fix the motor mechanism.

The next step in the installation is attaching the chain to the gate. The chain is installed in the lower part of the beam, and cover as additional protection from rubber material.

In order to finally strengthen the chain, welding is used.

Gate automation installation

To put it all together, you need to perform several steps:

  1. Before installation, you need to choose a place for installation and proceed with the installation of the rail in such a way that so that it is on the surface of the gear.
  2. At the desired point, the drive is fixed with a welding machine.
  3. Next you need install gear rack. It is welded to the pipe and pulled over the surface of the canvas.
  4. All elements are checked and welded again.
  5. The next step is the installation of limit switches. They are either mechanical or magnetic.
  6. The system must be connected according to the instructions given by the manufacturer. Settings for additional functions are carried out with the remote control.
  7. Further install light fixtures capturing photo signals.
  8. For installation, you need to make a hole in the pipe and pass the main power sources through it.

  9. Fastening of a signal type of a lamp that transmits data about approaching objects. This element can be excluded from the installation, but for the safety of the structure it is better to use it.

How to make a simple sliding gate with your own hands, see the video below:

A good, reliable fence with beautiful gates is not only the protection of a suburban area from uninvited guests, but also gives a clear idea of its boundaries. To make the fence more convenient and practical, its gates are equipped with devices that simplify their opening and make this process automatic. One of the most popular designs is a system with a mechanism that allows you to move the fence sheet to the side. Today, many companies are engaged in the installation of sliding gates, but we offer to make them yourself.

The device and principle of operation of sliding gates

Depending on the type and location of the supporting surface, sliding gates are divided into rail and roller gates, but since the latter have a more reliable design, systems with a lower rail guide are practically not used today. As for the mechanism with support rollers, it is not difficult to assemble it yourself, since all components can be purchased from a distribution network or made independently.

Previously popular sliding gates with a bottom guide rail have now been superseded by a more reliable design with support rollers.

These gates can be built in two ways:

  • monoscreen,
  • double synchronous design.

A monoscreen is a construction of one sash, which rests on roller guides (trolleys or cantilever supports) installed on the side of the opening. On them, the gates move in one direction, opening a place for the passage of the car. Such a system does not require an upper constriction between the posts and is used with a web height of not more than 2 meters. The simplicity and convenience of a monoscreen contribute to its popularity for arranging private plots, open areas and courtyards.

Scheme of roller sliding gates

Double synchronous gates have a pair of wings that move in opposite directions. Unlike a monoscreen, the design has two supporting foundations and an upper beam, which serves as a guide for additional rollers. The cantilever system is able to withstand the increased weight of the canvas, therefore it is used for gates with a height of more than 2 meters. It is a good option for equipping garages for trucks and high hangars, various warehouses, industrial facilities, etc.

Since for a private courtyard the need to install high gates occurs infrequently, we will further consider single systems. Among other things, such sliding gates have a simplified design, so they are more suitable for DIY.

Roller carriages are the main supporting elements of the structure

In addition to the guide and roller bearings (cantilever blocks or trolleys), several other elements ensure the performance of the structure.

  1. Lower and upper catcher. They are U-shaped brackets installed on the edges of the catching pole (supports, racks) and designed to fix the gate in the closed state. The upper catcher prevents the sash from “falling over” to the side, while the lower latch, in addition to this function, also relieves the load on the rollers and the guide.

    The catchers are made of thick metal, because the reliability of fixing the gate in the closed position depends on them.

  2. Supporting tire or bracket (roller limiter). It is installed along the upper edge of the main rack and serves for additional fixation of the canvas.

    Support bracket with rollers

  3. Support roller. It is attached to the front end of the guide and serves as a plug, damper and support element. When the sash enters the lower catcher, it softens the blow and takes on part of the weight of the structure.

    Support roller with rubber damping pad

In addition, some parts of the system are equipped with plugs that prevent snow from accumulating and serve as decorative elements.

Structural design features

Before proceeding with the purchase of materials, you should draw up at least a small drawing or sketch indicating the main dimensions and calculating the required material.

Canvas dimensions

One of the main issues in the design of the gate is to determine the width and other dimensions of the structure. First of all, you should determine the distance between the gate posts, since all further calculations depend on this value. This takes into account:

  • the size of the vehicles that will enter the site;
  • car entry angle;
  • free gap between the overall width of the car and the gate supports, which should be 0.3–0.5 m on each side.

For middle-class cars, a gate 2.5–3 m wide will suffice, while a truck or tractor requires an opening of at least 3.5 meters.

The design and dimensions of the sliding gate leaf with a frame for a metal profile

If movement perpendicular to the fence line is difficult and entry at an angle is required, then this value must be increased by another 1.5 times. But we must also take into account the fact that the car for any reason (slippery surface, inexperienced driver, improperly secured load) can move or lean to the side. Therefore, the gate width of about 4.5 m can be considered optimal - this will be enough for any situation.

When calculating the width of the canvas, 20 cm are added to the size of the opening. This must be done so that when the gate is closed from the side of the support rollers, the yard is not visible through the gap. If this possibility was not taken into account in the manufacture of the sash, then you can get out of the situation by slightly moving the pillars towards each other. When determining the height of the gate, many believe that it should be the same as that of the fence, but usually the canvas is made a little smaller. This is due to the fact that the lower edge of the fence is installed with a minimum clearance from the level of the site, while the leaf does not touch the ground and is installed with a clearance of about 10 cm.

Drawing of sliding gate leaf without frame for filling profile

In fact, the distance between the lower rail and the level of the yard is adjusted using the support platforms, which set the height of the roller carts. Depending on their position, the sashes rise above the site to a height of 10 to 15 cm.

In addition, the height of the canvas is affected by the dimensions of the frame of its frame and the width of the lower guide. So that in the end the gate is on the same level with the fence, when designing, it is necessary to take into account all these nuances and make an accurate calculation.

Drawings and diagrams

The basis of the design of sliding gates is a guide that moves along the cantilever blocks.

So that the support rollers do not interfere with the passage, they are shifted beyond the side clearance. At the same time, the sash is lengthened due to a special slope that acts as a counterweight. It is possible to avoid skew when closing sliding gates if the length of the slope is equal to ½ of the leaf width.

The entire load during the operation of the mechanism is taken up by roller carts, therefore, their installation requires a strong, reliable base. The foundation is made in the form of a massive reinforced concrete structure with an upper laying platform made of a wide metal channel. In the future, it will be convenient to use it not only for mounting roller bearings, but also for mounting an automation drive.

The retractable type has a very simple design. Understanding the mechanism of work is enough to independently draw up the necessary sketches and make calculations. Nevertheless, we bring to your attention diagrams and drawings of structures that will serve as visual aids and help in the work. Among other things, one of the finished projects can be taken as a basis for the manufacture of sliding gates with your own hands.

What you need for a do-it-yourself construction

Starting the construction of the gate, you must have a set of components (accessories), which can be purchased as a kit or made independently. As for the tools, no specific devices are needed - everything you need can be found even from a novice home master.

Selection of parts for the rollback mechanism

There are several options for accessories for sliding gates, depending on the width of the opening and the weight load:

  • for gates weighing up to 400 kg and a width of not more than 4 m;
  • for canvases weighing up to 600 kg and a width of not more than 6 m;
  • for sashes weighing from 600 kg and a width of 6 m and more.

When choosing one or another kit for your needs, you should definitely take into account the filling material of the leaf, because it has a significant impact on the weight of the sash.

The creation kit consists of the following parts:

  • bottom guide;
  • support bracket with rollers;
  • roller support - 2 pcs.;
  • supporting stand of the roller platform - 2 pcs.;
  • support (end) roller;
  • lower and upper catchers;
  • plastic plugs.

The guide of the lower rollers must be rigid enough to retain its original shape and not deform under wind load. To ensure this condition, responsible manufacturers make the rail from high-quality structural steel with a thickness of at least 3.6 mm - this parameter should be guided by when choosing it.

Sliding gate hardware kit

Since the entire mass of the gate is held by roller carriages, their bearings must be of high quality, and the rolling surfaces themselves must have high hardness. On sale you can find cantilever blocks with plastic rollers that reduce the noise level when the gate moves. Keep in mind that these parts will need to be replaced after some time, as even the highest quality thermoplastics can't compare to case hardened steel. Before installation, it is recommended to open the bearings of the support rollers in order to check the amount of lubrication - it depends on whether the gate will creak when moving, and how long these parts will work without backlash and jamming.

The sash is fixed from above by a supporting bracket. To ensure the stability and reliability of the structure, its thickness must be at least 4 mm. As for the guides installed on it, rubber rollers have proven themselves best. The load on them is not so great, but the fact that they do not scratch the frame of the gate during operation has a positive effect on the aesthetics of the structure.

When choosing the bottom catcher, keep in mind that it works in tandem with the support roller. Be sure to check how freely the limit switch enters the latch. In addition, the end roller is designed to redistribute the load when the gate is closed, so the same requirements are imposed on it as on the main supporting elements of the system.

The metal plate from which the catchers are made must have a thickness of at least 4 mm, since the reliability of fixing the sash in the closed position depends on its quality. In addition, the strength of these parts must be ensured by the welding connection.

Any guide rail plugs will fit. The main thing is that they prevent the ingress of snow and perform a decorative function.

The choice of material for sewing depends entirely on personal preferences and financial capabilities, so you can use:

  • corrugated board, which is lightweight and easy to install with rivets or self-tapping screws. Profile panels can be selected according to the thickness, color, depth and width of the wave, and their coating is able to protect the metal from corrosion for many years;
  • steel sheets - selected by thickness and size. Most often used as a basis for forged elements of the gate;
  • polycarbonate, with which the gate will be the lightest;
  • picket fence or lining - they must be treated with antiseptic agents and coated with varnish or paint. Only in this case, you can count on the durability and aesthetic appearance of lumber;
  • forging - can be used either alone or in combination with polycarbonate, lumber or steel sheets. Today, in the distribution network, you can buy individual forged elements, from which, with the help of welding, it is easy to build a real work of blacksmithing art;
  • panel (chocolate) - to obtain it, metal sheets are stamped. On sale you can find "chocolates" of various sizes. They are attached to the frame by welding or rivets.

When using forging, steel sheets or panels for sheathing the leaf, a significant increase in the weight of the door should be taken into account when choosing roller bearings and other structural elements.

On sale you can find a panel of various sizes, which allows you to create gates of the original design

What tools and materials will be needed

The construction of sliding gates will require not only plumbing, but also concrete work, so you should prepare:

  • shovel;
  • crowbar or pickaxe;
  • tamper;
  • containers for bulk materials and concrete;
  • welding machine;
  • grinder (angle grinder or angle grinder);
  • cutting and cleaning wheel for angle grinders;
  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • a set of open-end wrenches;
  • roulette;
  • scriber or pencil;
  • compressor with a spray gun or brushes for painting.

If the sash is sheathed not with metal, but with wood, then you may need a circular or miter saw, planer, chisel and other carpentry tools.

For the manufacture of the door leaf, shaped steel pipes are best suited

In addition to components and trim elements, you will need a lot of other materials. So, to make a sliding gate for a 4-meter opening, you will need to bring to the site:

  • at least 18 meters of a profile pipe 50x50 mm or 60x40 mm with a wall of 2 mm - for welding the frame frame;
  • up to 20 linear meters of pipe 40x20x2 mm, which will be needed for the internal parts of the frame;
  • channel No. 20 with a length of at least 2 m - for the construction of a mortgage support platform for roller guides;
    Instead of a channel, you can use two pieces of steel angle with a shelf 100 mm long, which are welded along the length. It is not recommended to install mortgages only under the roller bearing carriages, as well as to concrete the studs - in this case it will be difficult to set the rollers and adjust the automatic closing device (drive).
  • thick sheet metal for flashings - mortgages, which are installed in the masonry during the construction of side supports (pillars);
  • about 15 m of reinforcement or steel bar with a diameter of 10–12 mm, which will be needed to fix the channel and build the foundation;
  • sand, crushed stone and cement for concrete preparation.

You should take care of the aesthetics of the structure in advance, so you will need paint and a primer to paint the frame or the entire canvas. Suitable for any alkyd enamel for outdoor use and a primer for metal surfaces.

Step-by-step installation of sliding gates

The correct approach to the manufacture of sliding gates will allow you to get a solid, reliable design and avoid errors in operation. Therefore, the whole process is best divided into several stages:

  • construction of supporting pillars;
  • arrangement of the foundation;
  • production of canvas and individual structural elements;
  • construction installation.

To be successful, everything must be done according to the work plan. Each step must be accompanied by the control of geometry and other technological parameters. Only in this case, you can count on the fact that even a child can open the gate.

Pole installation

The installation of support pillars is one of the most critical stages, since in the future they will be responsible for the stability of the entire structure. Racks can be made from various materials - oak timber, massive metal, brick or concrete. It is recommended to concrete pillars to a depth of at least 1 m, and in areas with a high level of groundwater, equip a common foundation for all structural elements of sliding gates.

Scheme of supporting structures of sliding gates

If metal pipes are used for the racks, then the installation of the catchers and the supporting rail does not cause difficulties - they can be fixed by welding. In the case when the pillars are made of stone or brick, mortgages must be installed in the masonry. These fasteners are metal platforms made of thick sheet steel, to which pieces of a metal bar or thick wire are welded. During the construction of the pillars, the flexible elements are laid in the seams, setting the flashings at the desired height.

So, for the installation of support posts, they dig a hole with a diameter of at least 0.5 m and a depth of more than 1 meter, into which a pole is installed. Next, expose it with a level and pour concrete. For reliability, several crossbars from pieces of angle, pipes, fittings, etc. can be welded to the lower part of the metal rack.

Foundation construction

Before proceeding with the installation work, it is necessary to mark the foundation of the support platform and prepare the foundation pit for its arrangement. For these purposes, 0.5 m recede from the plane of the fence - this will be the width of the trench. The foundation should be 20–30 cm longer than the counterweight of the sash.

If automation is used to open the gate, then even at the stage of installing the pillars and building the foundation, electrical cables are laid in the ground. To protect them, a corrugated plastic casing is used.

A channel up to 20 cm wide is used as a foundation. Its length is equal to half the width of the opening plus an allowance of 10–20 cm for the installation of roller bearing platforms. To ensure the solidity of the mortgage, it is reinforced with a reinforcement frame.

Drawing of the foundation of the supporting platform

The foundation is built like this:

  • dig a trench 1–1.5 m deep. On sandy soils, as well as at a high level of groundwater, the bottom of the pit should be below the freezing point;
  • rods are cut from a metal bar or reinforcement: long 1–1.5 m (along the depth of the trench) and short 0.2 m. The latter will need half as much - they will be used as jumpers;
  • long pieces of reinforcement are welded to the side shelves of the channel at a distance of 30 cm from each other, obtaining a structure that looks like a bench with many legs;
  • opposite bars are connected in pairs using 20 cm jumpers at a distance of 0.7–0.8 m from the channel;
  • the mortgage structure is lowered into the trench, aligning the channel along the height of the site.

    The channel must be set strictly horizontally so that its upper plane coincides with the level of the carriageway. If tiles, concrete or asphalt pavement is still planned, then the increase in the height of the passage must be taken into account.

  • install formwork and armored belt;
  • concrete is poured and compacted thoroughly.

According to the technology, the foundation must stand for 28 days in order for the concrete to reach branded strength.

Arrangement of the foundation of the supporting platform

sash manufacturing

For the manufacture of the supporting frame of the door leaf, profiled metal pipes with a cross section of at least 50x50 mm are used. In order not to get a sash that was led by a "propeller", it is necessary to equip a platform with a strictly horizontal plane. To do this, choose a wide, flat place and, with small gaps, wooden slats or bars are laid out on the ground. Level control is carried out using a laser or bubble tool and a building cord.

It is convenient to use wooden props for welding the sliding gate leaf.

Welding of the web is carried out from the bottom up, laying individual structural elements on the prepared plane.

  1. An outer frame is made, which is the main frame of the sash. To do this, a frame pipe with a section of 50x50 mm or 60x40 mm is welded to the guide rail. After that, vertical pipes are attached to its upper plane, the upper crossbar and slope are mounted. The welding seam can be made with tacks 2 cm long every 0.5–0.6 m.
    The frame is welded in a checkerboard pattern. This will prevent overheating of individual sections and violation of the flatness of the structure.
  2. The elements of the filling frame are welded to the base of the frame, which will be needed to fix the corrugated board and will make the structure more rigid. Internal bulkheads are made of pipes 40x20 mm.
  3. The welding points are cleaned with an angle grinder, after which the structure is coated with a primer.
  4. Using a spray gun, two or three layers of alkyd paint are applied.
  5. After the protective layer has dried, the canvas is sheathed with corrugated board. For its fastening, self-tapping screws or rivets are used, holes for which are drilled with an electric drill.

The frame, which will be sheathed with a profiled sheet, wood or polycarbonate, must be painted before filling

If steel sheets or forging are used as filling, then they are welded at the frame construction stage, after which they are cleaned and only after that the gate is prepared for painting.

Instructions for assembling the structure

  1. Installation of sliding gates begins with markings. In order to indicate the trajectory of their movement, a cord must be pulled along the roadway. The gap between it and the road surface should be 150–200 mm, and the distance to the support post should be 70 mm (with a recommended web thickness of up to 70 mm). In the future, the cord will serve as an axial line when installing cantilever supports
  2. Determine the installation location of the front roller trolley. The principle here is simple - the farther the supports are placed from each other, the less the load on the bearings will be. Nevertheless, the set of support rollers closest to the roadway is installed not at the extreme dimension of the pole, but at a distance of 15 cm towards the rollback. This is done so that the rolling roller sticking out of the sash does not protrude onto the roadway. To determine the extreme position of the rear cantilever support, subtract 100 mm from the total length of the blade (with counterweight). The resulting value is set aside from the receiving post (on which the catchers will be mounted) - this point will be the outer boundary of the second cart.

    Determination of installation locations for roller bearings

  3. The supporting platforms of the roller bearings are set at the points obtained and tacked by welding, after which the rollers are installed on the adjusting plates.

    Roller bearings are installed on the base plate by means of supporting platforms. This allows you to avoid overheating of the rollers during installation and to be able to set the guide "horizontally"

  4. The door leaf is put in the wrong place, rolling the guide onto the rollers. They check the correct installation of the supports, after which the sash is removed, and the carts themselves are dismantled.
  5. Adjustment plates are welded securely.

    Before welding the support platforms and installing the carts in place, the door leaf is removed

  6. The roller bearings and the canvas are installed in place, after which the gate is fixed in the closed state.
  7. The building level is set in the same plane with the guide, after which the gate is set “into the horizon” with the adjusting bolts of the supporting platforms.

    Proper mounting of the roller trolley (with support platform) will allow you to easily adjust the level of the guide beam

  8. The knurling roller is installed inside the guide, after which it is fixed with bolts and, for reliability, is seized by welding.

    Mounting the knurling roller

  9. Opposite the column closest to the roller carts, a roller limiter is installed on the upper edge of the canvas. The supporting rail is fixed by welding, after which the vertical installation of the gate is adjusted.

    The bracket of the supporting rail can be attached to the post by welding - a wide range of adjustment of each roller allows you to easily set the door leaf vertically

  10. Install the bottom catcher. To mark the place of its installation, the gate is fixed in the closed position, the catcher bracket is brought under the support roller and pressed until it touches completely. The catcher is bolted so that in the future it is possible to adjust its position relative to the roller.

    If everything is done correctly and accurately, then the result should be something like this

    How to equip them with automation

    It is possible to install an automatic opening system on such gates only if they move easily and without jerks on the rollers. To do this, you need to purchase:

    • gear rack;
    • electric drive;
    • signal light;
    • limit switches or photocells;
    • remote control;
    • Control block.

    Today there is no need to buy components separately - you can find ready-made automation kits on sale. To install the system, you will need the same tools that were used in the manufacture and installation of the gate.

    Sliding gate automation kit

    The electric drive is attached to the same embedded channel as the roller bearings. The work is carried out in stages.

    For safety reasons, a signal lamp is installed on the extreme pole. After that, check the correctness of the electrical connections and turn on the electricity supply.

    As a sliding gate drive, you can use a screwdriver or any electric motor with a gearbox, and use an inexpensive car alarm for remote control.

    Video: sliding gates with a drive made from a screwdriver

    Although sliding gates require more financial investments than conventional ones, you can save the lion's share of the costs if you make them yourself. Ease of use and comfort provided by the remote control system are combined with high reliability and the ability to save space on the site. Not a bad argument for a modern and functional design, isn't it?

Sliding gate installation complex work requiring knowledge, skills and experience. All installation stages require strict adherence to the rules and regulations of the instructions below. Otherwise, the design will not last long, and the repair costs will significantly exceed the amount that could be spent on professional installation.

So, you already have profile pipes for the frame, materials for filling it and everything else (fasteners, electric motor, guides, moving mechanisms, control units, etc.). Move on.

To get started, familiarize yourself with the scheme of installation of sliding gates. See how the structure will look like in the end and where the elements included in the delivery are attached.

Installation of sliding gates on piles is not an option. Installation of a reliable structure is not complete without pouring the foundation. It is shown in the diagram below.

From the side of the opening into which the sash will roll back, dig a rectangular hole. It should start from the outer edge of the support post and fit snugly against it. The dimensions of the pit for a standard foundation (with a web width of 3.5 or 4 m) are 2 * 0.6 m. Tamp the bottom of the pit and lay a sand and gravel pad (30 cm).

Important! The depth is chosen depending on the climatic conditions of a particular area. In central Russia, the soil freezes by about 1.8 m. And, for example, in Siberia, pits are dug 2.5–3 m deep.

Make a frame. Cut 8 bars of reinforcement and weld them to the channel (4 pieces on each side). At a distance of 40-50 cm from the free ends, "tie" the structure with transverse crossbars. As a result, you should get such a frame.

Install the frame in the pit and make sure that it is directed strictly along the path of the gate and tightly adjacent to the post. Adjust the position of the channel with a level. If you have metal supports, you can even weld the structure for reliability.

After placing the frame, lay the necessary wires. Use corrugated pipes for protection.

The bundle of cables should come out of the channel at the place where you will install the drive.

The wiring is finished - mix the concrete and fill the hole with it.

Pay attention to an important feature. The channel must be located strictly horizontally. Even a slight deviation will lead to serious problems. Start pouring concrete into the hole only after you are sure of the correct placement of the frame.

The construction of sliding gates will continue only after the concrete has hardened. Proceed to the next installation steps after 28 days. You can use fast-hardening cement, but the structure will be less durable.

Making a canvas frame

While the concrete hardens, you can slowly start making the sash frame. Pipes 6 * 4 cm will go to the frame, and 4 * 2 cm to the stiffeners. To build the frame, use the drawing below.

The ideal distance between vertical stiffeners is 1 m.

Step-by-step installation of sliding gates

So, the frame is ready, the concrete has frozen - you can proceed with the installation. First, attach metal supports to the posts, on which the traps will be placed. Make sure that the embeds are strictly vertical.

Roller mounting

Installation of supports - the most important stage of installation of retractable gate. Weld the rollers to the channel and make sure that the devices are placed as shown in the diagram below.

Make sure that the metal sliding gates will move freely and securely fixed with the devices included in the delivery.

Mounting the upper limiter

To the mortgage located on the side into which the gate will open, attach the upper limiter. It is needed so that the canvas does not sway from the wind, does not move out of the guide and stops.

Important. Don't forget to adjust the roller pressure. The canvas should move easily and freely. In addition, the adjustment minimizes loosening of the structure.

End roller attachment

Fix the end roller on the guide bar. The mechanism is needed so that the door leaf rolls onto the lower catcher and receives an additional point of support.

Put a cap on the end cut. It will protect the structure from debris and snow.

Installation of traps

Fix the catchers on the support post in the right places. This can be done with bolts or welding.

The upper catcher will soften the contact of the web with the support and limit the loosening of the structure from strong winds. Weld a bracket of the desired size to the upper corner of the frame. As a result, both surfaces will be protected from corrosion.

The lower catcher is needed to securely fix the closed sash. Place the module flush with the rail.

Before the next installation steps, open and close the gate several times and make sure everything is done correctly.

Frame sheathing

Attach existing materials to the gate frame. Galvanized self-tapping screws are ideal for sheathing.

Automation installation

Installing a sliding gate with an electric drive will guarantee that most of the time the structure will be operated in a careful mode. Strictly follow the instructions supplied with the equipment.

Place the drive, control box and signal lamp in the right places. Install the gear rack, connect the system to the mains and make sure that all devices and mechanisms work correctly.

This completes the installation. Sliding gates to the cottage are ready for operation.

Do-it-yourself sliding gate installation - relevant or not?

Do-it-yourself sliding gate installation is relevant only if you have free time and the necessary experience. According to statistics, many property owners make mistakes during installation. Moreover, even the slightest flaws lead to a quick breakdown of structures.

If you have the necessary tools and you are confident in your abilities, install the roll-out gate yourself. Otherwise, order fabrication and installation from a reliable construction company. You will receive a guarantee for the installed structure and gain confidence that it will last the prescribed period. You won't have to spend time on installation work.

Sliding gate installation price

Sliding gate installation price in a reliable construction company will fully justify itself. You do not have to purchase the necessary tools, materials and equipment. The cost of the necessary equipment, sand, cement and gravel will significantly exceed the cost of a professional installation.
