How to hold two double wired switches. Switch with two keys: how to connect? Scheme, instructions. Connection diagram of a simple lamp

If you want to control the lighting system in two directions, a double switch is convenient.

Connection diagrams for two-gang switches are not complicated, but they require a serious approach to choosing the case material and wires for installation.

It is also important to follow the safety rules and do the work carefully.

A two-gang switch is a device designed to direct current to 2 electrical appliances or two groups of one lighting source. Most often it is used in circuits to control ceiling chandeliers with many light bulbs. A separate group of light sources is connected to each key. It is also possible to connect 2 lamps located in different rooms or at a distance from each other in the same room.

The two-gang switch consists of a working mechanism and a protective part (frame and keys). The keys allow you to turn on and off groups of lamps separately and simultaneously (6 operations in total).

To see the working part, you need to remove the keys by prying with a screwdriver.

Frame attached:

The working mechanism in the socket is attached:

  • with a strap or frame;
  • with the help of paws.

There are holes in the frame (slats) that allow you to adjust the position of the mechanism. The paws are located on the sides, when the screws are tightened, they unfold until they rest against the socket.

There are 5 contacts in the working mechanism:

  • one for connecting a suitable phase;
  • two - for connecting outgoing wiring;
  • two movable, called jumpers (for closing and opening the circuit using the keys).

To fix the working part in the socket, a spring mechanism or plates are provided that move when the screws are tightened.

Important! Two-key switches are designed for connection to a network with a maximum voltage of 1000 V and a current of up to 10 A. They do not have protection against overload, overcurrent, short circuit.

These devices are:

  • internal;
  • outdoor;
  • waterproof;
  • with backlight.

Principle of operation:

The keys can be moved to one of two positions individually and simultaneously.

Installation instructions

The circuit is mounted with a three-core cable (even in the absence of grounding). If possible, it is better to choose a switch, on the body of which the wiring diagram is drawn.

Before starting the connection, the device must be disassembled - remove the keys and the substrate, screwed or mounted on latches. It remains the case and the inner part with contacts. It is important to correctly determine the one to which you want to connect the phase from the junction box.

To determine the purpose of the contacts, you should consider the marking. The main contact for the phase wire is indicated by the letter L (it is not always located in the center or separately from one side).

In the absence of marking, a battery-powered screwdriver tester is needed. In the contact, which (presumably) is phase, you need to insert a screw or stud and grab it with your fingers. The rest of the contacts should be touched in turn with a screwdriver. When the keys are moved to the “on” position, the screwdriver glows (if the contact is defined correctly).

Attention! Before you start assembling the circuit, you must turn off the power supply and check the wiring for voltage.

A phase from the junction box is supplied to the two-gang switch. The core is stripped, installed between the contact plates, the screw is tightened. The other two cores are also stripped and connected to the outlet contacts in the same way. Next, the case is inserted into the box and screwed with screws, keys are installed.

The neutral wire (N, blue color) does not start in the two-gang switch, it is immediately connected to the neutral wires of the fixtures in the junction box.

If the housing is surface-mounted, after disassembling the switch, it is applied to the wall in level to mark the location of the mounting holes. Then holes are drilled, the body is attached to the wall with dowel-nails. The wiring diagram does not change.

Wiring diagrams for a double switch

The design of a two-key switch is two single-key switches that are installed in a single housing.

The connection diagram consists of:

  • light bulbs connected in parallel;
  • switch;
  • junction box;
  • power supply for 220 V.

Enter into the junction box:

  • a cable with two wires (one of them is a phase, the second is zero) from a shield (power source);
  • cable for 3 wires from the switch;
  • 2 cables to 3 wires from the lighting fixture(s).

The phase of the power supply is connected to the phase of the two-gang switch. Two cores from the lighting fixture and two from the switch remain free. They need to be connected in pairs.

To disconnect the conductors in the junction box, it is best to use quick-clamp terminals.

Terminal blocks are required to connect wires to the lighting fixture. In them, according to the marking, veins are wound up. The phase is connected to the central contact of the light source, zero - to the base.

After pressing any of the keys, the chain closes, the lamp (or part of the chandelier bulbs) lights up. Pressing again opens the circuit.

Features of connecting a device with a backlight

The backlight is a neon bulb, a resistor or an LED with a capacitor installed in the working part of the switch. The most profitable option is the first, as it is suitable for connecting to all types of electric lamps.

If the circuit is opened, the phase current through the resistance and the neon bulb flows to the filament and zero. The resistance of the filament of the lighting device is less than on the backlight, the voltage goes to the neon and the resistance connected in series, the backlight is on. After turning on the lamp, the circuit closes, the voltage goes to it, the backlight turns off.

Attention! If the switches are installed and the lighting is not used (there are no lamps in the circuit), the backlight does not work due to a lack of power.

Illuminated dual switch connection:

Almost everyone is familiar with a conventional switch - it is in any home. But, in addition to conventional switches, there are also double switches or, as they are also called, two-gang or double switches. In this article, we will deal with the design and consider the connection diagram of a two-gang switch.

Purpose and design

The purpose of a double switch is the same as that of a conventional single switch: to supply voltage to one or another load (usually these are lighting fixtures). The difference between a double device and a single-key one is that in one case there are, as it were, two independent switches. The convenience of such a design is obvious. Occupying the same space as its one-button counterpart, the device allows you to independently control two loads. In addition, the keys in such a device are located next to each other, which creates certain ease of use.

Agree, a double switch is not only more convenient than two single-button ones, but also looks more aesthetically pleasing

Since a two-key device is two single-key, then its electrical circuit will have the corresponding form:

Electrical diagram of two single and one double instrument

Externally, the double switch looks something like this:

Double switch with cover removed

Wiring diagram

We figured out the design and features of the double switch, now we need to figure out how to connect it. Consider two examples:

  1. Control of a multi-track chandelier.
  2. Management of separate groups of lamps.

Connecting to a chandelier with multiple lamps

Suppose we have a five-arm chandelier at our disposal, the lamps of which are connected in two groups: 2 and 3 lamps each.

Wiring diagram of a five-arm chandelier

Here, the blue wire is common to all lamps, the red wire feeds the first, and the yellow wire feeds the second group. By including these groups in one or another combination, you can get 3 gradations of brightness:

  1. The lamps don't light up.
  2. 2 lights are on.
  3. 3 lights are on.
  4. 5 lights are on.

How to put it into practice? If you have at least a basic knowledge of electrical engineering, solving this problem will not be difficult for you. First, let's clarify this issue on paper:

Electrical circuit for controlling a five-arm chandelier with a double switch

Closing the left key, you turn on a group of two lamps. The second controls a group of three lamps. If both keys are turned on, all horns will light. Note that the neutral wire, which I have labeled N (neutral), is connected directly to the lamps, and both groups of lamps are connected to the same phase through a double switch. This is done for safety reasons: when both keys are turned off, there is no voltage on the chandelier. This allows you to safely change the light bulbs in the lamp and even repair it without de-energizing the entire apartment.

Important! If you are going to repair a chandelier connected in this way, I strongly advise you to de-energize the apartment anyway, hang a warning sign on the machine or switch, or even better, set up an observer. Before climbing into the lamp, check the absence of voltage with a pointer (indicator).

Now let's solve this problem in practice. First of all, from the future location of the switch to the nearest junction box, which is in each room, it is necessary to make a wiring harness - a deep groove in the plaster. If the chandelier is hung in a new place, then the box from the box must also be drawn to it. This can be done with a grinder or a simple file.

Cutting through the line

At the location of the future double switch, it is necessary to make a seat using a crown and an ordinary chisel.

Cutting a seat for a double switch using a crown and a chisel

Install plastic socket boxes in ready-made seats: they are usually mounted on screws through dowels or simply on cement mortar.

Installation of a socket box on a gypsum mortar

Now put a three-wire wire in the strainer, passed through a plastic tube of a suitable diameter. The tube is not a required item, but it will greatly facilitate repairs if the wiring burns out. It will be enough just to pull out the burnt wire without destroying the wall, and fill it with a new wire.

Open the junction box and use a voltage indicator (indicator screwdriver) to find zero and phase. Now it's time to de-energize the apartment, make sure with the same indicator that there is no voltage, and assemble a simple circuit:

First of all, connect and install the switch itself. The photo below clearly shows where to connect the wires.

Mounting a double switch

Important! Please note that although the vast majority of dual switches have a common input, there are devices with separate inputs. In this case, the phase is supplied to the second key by a jumper from the first.

Connecting spotlights

Recently, suspended and stretch ceilings, and with them spotlights, have become widespread.

The use of spotlights for general lighting and decorative lighting

Since a large number of lamps are used for general lighting, they are often divided into groups, each of which can be switched on separately. This allows not only to change the overall level of illumination, but also to divide the room into zones. If you have several groups of lamps in your room, then it is convenient to use the same double switch to control them. The scheme of their connection will be the same as that of the chandelier, only instead of horns, spotlights are assembled into groups.

Scheme of connecting two groups of lamps to a double switch

Please note that, as in the case of a chandelier, the phase wire is connected to a double switch, and the zero wire goes to the fixtures.

What will it look like in practice? As an example, I divided the lamps into groups by size and power.

Questions to the expertConnecting a pass switch from 2 or 3 places

Quite often, when installing electrical lighting networks in domestic and industrial premises, it becomes necessary to control several devices at once from one point.

By connecting a double switch to two light bulbs, it is quite possible to make this idea a reality.

How to do this, and what safety rules should be followed?

Why you need to connect a double switch to two light bulbs

The main reason for using double switches is to optimize the use of electrical equipment that is connected to the same circuit. The most striking example of an optimized contour is the standard organization of lighting for a separate bathroom. At the same time, one key switch is installed from the hallway side. As a result, you can control the lighting in the toilet with one key, and in the bathroom with another.

Thanks to this switch, it becomes possible with one movement to simultaneously perform two actions - this is turning on the lights in one room, and turning off the lights in another.

Wiring diagram for a two-gang switch for two bulbs with a grounding conductor in the network

However, it is only necessary to install a general type switch when they are nearby. If the rooms are at a distance, then it is better to use standard separate installations so that there is no confusion.

And if you are wondering how to connect a double switch for two light bulbs, then in addition to the connection diagram, you need to learn what tools are needed for this, how to prepare for installation, and how to do it directly. Let's take a closer look at each of the points.

Preparatory stage of work

In the process of preparing for the installation of electrical switching devices, that is, switches, it is necessary to study the structure of the device, its purpose, performance and principle of operation. It is also important to prepare all the necessary tools for installing the switch in a domestic or industrial environment.

Adjustment of the number of switched on lighting devices should be carried out using a switch, which is equipped with an additional outgoing contact and a separate button for control. In terms of dimensions, it is usually identical to single-gang switches, which is provided for greater convenience of interchangeability. The main difference is the switching stuffing.

In devices with two keys, there is a working part with three contacts, of which one is incoming and two are outgoing. It is the outgoing contacts that have independent control, which is carried out using a switch.

When installing the switch, it must be positioned so that the outgoing contacts are on top. This is the generally accepted standard for the on/off position.

A wire with a phase that comes from the junction box must be connected to the terminal of the incoming contact. On the terminals of the outgoing contacts, phase wires of consumers must be installed, that is, from individual lamps of individual fixtures.

The neutral wire, also called the working zero, must be led out to the consumers from the junction box, while it must not pass through the switch in any way.

For open

For hidden

Separately, it is worth noting that the two-button models of switches have certain varieties:

  • models for installation on the wall itself (used for open wiring);
  • models for indoor wall mounting (suitable for hidden wiring).

Having dealt a little with the theory of connection and phases, it is necessary to prepare the workplace and proceed to direct installation.

Wiring diagrams

Step by step installation instructions

Theoretically, the process of connecting a switching device can be divided into several main stages. Installation must begin with cables. So, if the wiring is old enough, then it must be replaced with a new one. After that, it is required to make the correct connection of the wires in the junction box, and then in the switch itself. In order to install a lamp or chandelier, you must use the instructions from the manufacturer, specially designed for a particular light source.

The first stage is the preparation of the walls

The wall chasing step is very important and should only be skipped if new wiring with copper conductors of a suitable cross section is being laid. If there is any doubt, it is better to consult a specialist. If the wiring is old, be sure to change it to a new one.

For the purpose of lighting, the most ordinary VVGng wire is suitable, the cross section of which is 1.5 mm² squared. If, along with lighting, sockets will be connected, then it is better to give preference to the same wire, but already with a cross section of 2.5 mm².

At the stage of preparing the walls, chasing and arrangement should be made, preparation of places where junction boxes and socket boxes will be installed. At this stage, experts recommend installing an additional circuit breaker in the electrical panel as well. This separate device will come in handy, especially in situations where repairs will be needed on the lighting line. With such a simple protective device, it will be possible to disable only one circuit, while the rest will continue to work in standard mode.

It is worth noting that in the case of wooden houses, the type of wiring is significantly different, so the hidden installation method is not used, since this is an additional increase in the level of fire danger. In this regard, the cables must be as isolated as possible.

Installation of wires is carried out from the outside with the help of special insulators. In this case, not internal, but overhead switches are installed, however, the basic principle of connecting the cores to the terminals remains the same.

After the chasing of the walls of various materials is completed (it can be concrete, brick, and foam concrete), the grooves for laying wires must be sealed with mortar or alabaster. Then you can move on to plastering, to produce decorative wall decoration. It is recommended to save the location of the wires on the diagram, drawing, so that in the future repair and replacement of wiring will not cause problems.

The second stage - connection in the junction box

A junction box is a chamber in which the wiring and connection of the cores is carried out. Depending on the type of sockets and switches, the type of connection scheme itself can vary significantly. And first of all, at this stage, you should make the right choice of box. If earlier metal products were a priority, today more convenient and safer plastic analogues are being produced.

Wiring diagram of the cores: twist the neutral wire from the shield with the zeros of the two connected lamps, and send the phase to the switch. Direct two output phases from the switch to the lamps - one for each

As already mentioned, there are external and internal types, however, in the course of work, it is external products that are much easier to install. If it is necessary to disconnect the wires, for example, due to the replacement of the electrical installation, in order to gain access to the built-in junction box, it will be necessary to dismantle the plaster, and then repair it.

In the case of the outer box, its body is always in sight. To access it will be enough to unscrew the cover and carry out the required actions.

Recently, it is three-core wires in the junction box that have been mainly used, therefore, as in the case of a zero core, the earth is twisted. If the house still has old wiring, but it is quite reliable and serviceable, then you can not replace it. In this case, the connection indicated in the diagram should be used.

In general, there are several options for connecting wires. And the most common today are twisting with insulation in the future, as well as connecting using terminal blocks. As for soldering, this method is rarely used. If you prefer the use of terminal blocks, then you can give preference to a junction box in which the terminals are already pre-installed.

The third stage - installation of fixtures

Depending on a number of factors, the main way to install a chandelier with two lamps or two separate lamps may also differ. Among them are:

  • directly the model of the lighting device;
  • wiring readiness level;
  • mounting bases.

The easiest way to replace lighting equipment is when the main core is brought out at the installation site, that is, for example, in the center of the room. In the case of new or false ceilings (stretch ceiling, plastic or even plasterboard), in order to install the lighting fixture, it will be necessary to install additional fasteners or mortgages.

When two phase wires are supplied to the lamp from a two-key switch, each of them is connected in turn to a specific light bulb. In addition, two zero wires must be pulled from the junction box, which are also scattered during installation over two different lamps.

In the case when both bulbs are connected to the same wire, they will turn on and off at the same time, so there is no point in installing a double switch.

By installing two separate lamps in different rooms or rooms, the basic principle of installation does not change, but the wire drawing directly from the junction box changes. They should be directed in different directions, which is usually done if the rooms are next to each other. As for the junction box itself, it is better to install it directly above the switch itself, at a distance of about 15-20 cm from the ceiling.

The fourth stage is the installation of the switch itself

The process of mounting and connecting a two-gang switch usually does not cause any complications. Installation is carried out in a socket box or directly into the wall with fixation with tabs or screw connections.

If the lighting equipment has not two, but more lamps, which is not uncommon, then the connection must be made in groups. To do this, the number of lamps is divided into an equal or unequal number of groups, while the wire from contact L1 must be directed to one group, and from contact L2 to another.

Each master divides into groups depending on his own preferences and the required degree of illumination of the room. When two power modes are required, that is, weak and bright light, then the first core can be connected to one light bulb, and the second to the rest. To achieve the highest level of lighting brightness, it will be enough to press both keys of the switch so that all the bulbs are on at the same time.

In the process of installing the switch, there are several very important points that must be remembered. And this applies not only to the installation process itself, but also to the choice of the necessary equipment. By following a few simple rules, the system will be more reliable and secure.

  • all work on connecting equipment in the switchboard must be carried out by qualified electricians, in the absence of knowledge and skills in this area, it is unacceptable to interfere with the security system located on the site;
  • any actions should be carried out only after a power outage on the general apartment panel, while before carrying out any operations with wires, you should make sure that the electrical circuit is de-energized (you can use a probe for this);
  • in the case when it is planned to connect and install a contactless device or a device with a dimmer, a detailed study of the circuit is required, since the basic principle of installation can differ significantly from the installation of a two-gang switch, and can have many nuances.

Summing up, connecting a two-gang switch to two light bulbs is quite simple, especially if you have at least some skills in this area. But in the absence of experience with electrical equipment, it is better to leave this matter in the hands of professionals. Please be aware that working with electrical outlets can be life threatening. Incorrectly installed wiring can cause short circuit and fire. Don't risk your life and call the experts!

Video "Scheme and examples of connecting a two-gang switch"

The double switch, or two-button, is used to control several light sources from one point. This allows you to increase or decrease the degree of illumination of the room, creating greater comfort for its inhabitants. It is possible to connect a light switch with two keys on your own, without resorting to the help of specialists. The installation of this device provides several lighting modes, the convenience of its use in everyday life is difficult to overestimate.

The design of such a switch allows you to divide one input phase into two phases at the output, which allows you to supply voltage separately to two consumption sources. The device consists of:

  1. Two power keys.
  2. Decorative lining.
  3. The mechanical part, equipped with contact clamps for attaching power wires.

The design of individual models of the device may include a decorative key illumination based on LEDs. This helps to find the switch in the dark, and also allows you to understand that the power grid is working and energized.

The principle of operation is simple: in the mechanical part of the switch, one incoming phase is divided into two parallel electrical circuits with separate on / off, device keys.

This allows you to separately supply voltage to two light sources or two groups of lighting fixtures.

The wires in the device are fixed using screw or clamp terminals. The incoming terminal is located separately and has the designation L. On the opposite side there are two terminals with the designation L 1 and L 2, which serve to connect two lighting circuits.

Important note

When choosing a two-gang switch to control light groups, you need to pay attention to the number of contacts in the mechanical part of the device so as not to confuse it with a pass-through switch designed to solve completely different problems. The pass switch looks like this:

It is designed to control light groups from different points of the room. For example, to turn on the light when entering the room, and turn it off near the sofa or armchair. It differs by the presence of an additional fastening for a group of contacts.

Application methods

The use of a two-gang switch allows you to achieve variability in the degree of illumination of the room:

The sequence of switching on and the power of lamps or light groups depends on the design of the room and the wishes of its inhabitants.

The maximum possible number of lighting points is not always necessary. They can be easily turned off to save power. Such switches are useful from a safety point of view. Controlling the intensity of lighting allows you not to load the electrical network without the need, reducing the number of points of electricity consumption.

Wiring diagrams

There are several options for connecting a switch with two keys. Which one to use depends on the characteristics of the particular room and lighting design.

First of all, it is necessary to develop and draw a diagram of the desired connection in order to ensure that the necessary wiring is laid or connected correctly. The connection scheme also depends on the availability of grounding in the network. In most old apartments and private households, there is no ground wire, which is insignificant, but affects the switch connection scheme. In addition, it is necessary to take into account the location of lighting points, the number of lamps in one chandelier, as well as the location of light points in different devices (for example, two sconces are at a considerable distance from each other). Consider the most common schemes.

for two light bulbs

The connection diagram of a double switch for two light bulbs can be implemented:

  • Using a ground wire.
  • Without the use of a ground wire for two light sources located in one fixture. For example, in a chandelier.

For multi-lamp chandeliers

This scheme allows you to realize the variability of the degree of illumination of the room by using a switch with two keys and a five-lamp chandelier.

  • The phase switch button L 1 supplies voltage to two light points.
  • When the phase key L 2 is turned on separately, voltage is applied to three light points.
  • When the phase interrupt keys L 1 and L 2 are turned on at the same time, voltage is supplied to five light sources, providing maximum lighting power.

The number of lamps connected to each phase can be increased or decreased depending on the design of the chandelier.

The diagram shows the connection of a three-lamp chandelier using a ground wire, which is relevant for modern wiring.

Connecting two groups of lamps

This scheme allows you to connect two independent groups of light sources located at a considerable distance from each other. For example, two sconces in different sides of the room or two groups of spotlights on the ceiling. All described connection schemes are simple, but require care when connecting conductors.

Installing a two-gang switch

If, when installing the switches, after self-wiring, you act in accordance with the previously developed scheme, then it is almost impossible to get confused in the connection. It is much more difficult to figure out how to connect a switch with two keys to already laid wires hidden by plaster, but if you have basic knowledge in electrics, this is possible. However, in any electrical work, safety is extremely important.

Security measures

220 volts is always dangerous. For any electrical manipulations, the wiring must be de-energized by turning off the machine in the electrical panel located at the entrance to the apartment or other electrified premises. The following simple rules should be observed:

  • Do not work with wet hands on devices connected to the mains.
  • Do not use metal fasteners for wiring.
  • If the wire is visually defective, it must be replaced without resorting to repair.
  • Electrical tools must have insulated handles.

Required tool

To replace a previously installed switch or install a new one in an external wiring environment, as well as to install the device in a new location in a room with hidden wiring, you will need several different sets of tools. Namely:

Types of electrical wiring

Laying an electrical cable is a topic for a separate article.

External wiring is placed in a special corrugated hose made of non-combustible material and fastened with clips, clamps or clips over walls and ceilings.

Hidden wiring is placed in strobes (slots) made in concrete or brick using a special tool - a strobe cutter or using a grinder and a puncher, followed by cementing or plastering channels with an electric cable.

Wire identification standards

With proper wiring, wires can be identified by color. With self-assembly, compliance with color coding will help not to get confused when connecting working electrical circuits. This will reduce the time when installing certain devices and devices. The main markings look like this:

  • Blue means always zero.
  • Yellow wire with a green stripe - protection, grounding (used in modern electrical networks).
  • Brown or red conductor indicates phase.

And also there are letter markers:

  • A, B, C - phase designations.
  • N is always zero.
  • PE - protection, grounding.

These designations are not always visible and understandable to the layman, whose standards have changed several times over time, therefore, when installing devices in already installed wiring, you should not trust the possible fidelity of the marking. You must independently check and mark all used conductors with colored heat shrink tubing or colored electrical tape.

Self identification

To do this, you need an indicator (phase) screwdriver and a multimeter. If a single-phase network is laid in the room without a ground wire, then a screwdriver-indicator will help you find the phase.

In the lighting junction box, when the network is turned off, they strip the wires and spread them apart to avoid contact. After turning on the power supply, touch the wires with the tip of an indicator screwdriver. When you touch the wire with the presence of a phase, the indicator will light up. The indicator will not react to the neutral wire.

You will need a multimeter to determine the ground wire. The device is set to the limit of measuring alternating current over 220 volts. When voltage is applied, one probe touches the phase, the other in series - two other wires. When you touch the zero contact, the multimeter will show 220 volts, when you touch the ground, the readings will be lower.

After that, it is necessary to de-energize the network and mark the contact group for supplying voltage.

Connection step by step

To connect a two-gang switch, you will need a three-wire wire laid from the lighting junction box to the switch installation site. If one is laid, then the task is greatly simplified. The wires of two groups of light sources L 1, L 2 and marked conductors for supplying voltage from the electrical panel L must also be brought into the junction box.

At the installation site of the switch, a hole is drilled with a crown of the appropriate size and a socket box is necessarily installed. If there is an already drilled hole with a socket box, then it is advisable to replace the socket box before installing a new device. If external wiring is laid in the room, then the switch is installed in a specialized container, which is fixed to the wall with screws.

In the mechanical part of the switch, a common, input terminal is determined - the mount and the wire L is connected to it (supplying voltage from the electrical panel), having previously marked it in the junction box accordingly. The other two phase wires are connected to separate terminals, designating them L 1 and L 2.

After connecting the conductors, the mechanical part of the switch is fixed in the socket or container so that in the off position the keys are recessed down (this corresponds to the accepted standard), avoiding distortions and displacements.

Assemble the decorative part of the device, install the frame and keys.

In the junction box, the conductors are connected in accordance with the marking using Wago connections or contact strips.

  • Phase L coming from the switchboard is switched with the wire L going to the input of the switch.
  • Parallel phases L 1 and L 2 coming from the output of the switch are connected to the phase inputs to the light groups L 1 and L 2.
  • Zero outputs are switched to one connection.
  • The wires of protection, grounding are also connected into one whole, if any.

Twisting the wires is strictly not recommended. This method of switching conductors is not reliable. In electrical wiring, the weakest points are connections. Loose connections can lead to loss of contact or overheating and fire.

It must be remembered that a phase wire is always routed to the switch. Otherwise, the assembled electrical circuit will not meet safety standards.

Installing a two-gang switch is a simple task that is easy for a person who has a superficial understanding of electricity to handle. But, getting started, you need to pay special attention to safety and always remember that a voltage of 220 volts is dangerous.

Regardless of how much each of us is familiar with electricity and the laws of electrical engineering, everyone knows the simplest “switch” device. During the whole day we use it more than a spoon or a fork - at home, at work, in public places. Therefore, it is so important to get to know this device better, to find out what it consists of, what varieties it is, what the principle of operation is based on and how to properly connect it to the electrical network. In this article, we propose to talk in detail about the device, which is in the middle between the simplest and more complex. This is a switch with two keys. Those who are engaged in repairing the electrical network at home on their own will probably be interested in the connection diagram of a two-gang switch.

Purpose

Despite all the variety of devices for controlling lighting (button, cord, chain, slider, dimmers, remote switches, timers), the keyboard option is still a classic. And the principle of operation is the same for everyone: the working mechanism has two main positions (“on”, “off”) and performs two main functions - to close the electrical circuit and apply voltage to the lighting element, open the circuit and remove voltage from the lamp.

A two-gang switch is installed in household electrical networks with a voltage of up to 1000 V, the main purpose of its use is to turn on and off chandeliers, light bulbs, and fixtures. The main advantage of the 2-button switch is the two contact terminals at the output, to which two independent groups of lighting devices can be connected.

The installation of a two-gang household switch is used in the following cases:

  1. When the apartment has a separate bathroom and both rooms are located side by side through the wall. In this case, it will be very convenient to connect a double light switch and install it just on the wall partition between the doors of both rooms. One key will turn on the lights in the bathroom, the second key will turn on the light in the toilet.
  2. Connecting a two-gang switch is advisable when a chandelier with five or more horns is mounted in a large hall or office space, or spotlights on the ceiling. It is not always required that all the bulbs in the chandelier light up at once, sometimes a subdued light is enough. For example, you can apply voltage to only two lamps by turning on one key. The second key will remain disabled, the rest of the lamps in the lamp will not light, and thus energy savings occur. Indeed, in the case when there is a single-key switch, when it is pressed, all the lamps in the chandelier are lit at once. And if you calculate how much each extra burning light bulb consumes a kilowatt, then for a month you get a decent amount in rubles. Why pay extra?
  3. Often, a double switch for two light bulbs is also used in country houses. It is best to install it in rooms located close to the exit to the street. One key turns on the light in this corridor, and the second - a street lamp.

Kinds

Before you connect the switch, you need to clearly define what kind of switching device you need. By design, they are indoor and outdoor installation. At first glance, it seems that there is no difference - both in one and in the second there are two keys. If you look in more detail, you will understand that they differ in many ways - scope, installation method, type of electrical wiring.

For indoor installation

This is the most common type of light switch, it is also called "recessed" in another way, it is mounted in the wall, used in residential premises and office buildings.

The connection diagram of such a two-gang switch provides for the use of hidden electrical wiring. This is when the wires are laid in special grooves made in the wall (electricians call them gates) or inside frame plasterboard walls.

In order to connect this type of device, you will also need to additionally mount a socket box, which is a mounting box. The socket box is inserted into the hole in the wall, to which the strobes with wires fit, and already in it the working part of the switch is located. Socket boxes, in turn, also come in two types: for plasterboard and concrete walls.

Of course, you can guess how much dirt and dust can be in the apartment when, with the help of a grinder, strobes are cut in the wall and a hole is knocked out for installing a socket box. Therefore, it is advisable to combine the installation of hidden wiring and the installation of internal switches with general repair work in the room.

For outdoor installation

Connection of an external type switch is carried out with open wiring. This is when electrical wires are laid along the walls. They can be laid in metal, plastic or flexible corrugated pipes, in special boxes or cable channels that are made of plastic. And they can pass right along the walls on porcelain insulators. This method, one might say, is already outdated, not very popular, but even now there are situations when it is not possible to hide the wiring inside the wall.

Most often, the connection scheme for a double switch for two lamps is used in summer cottages. And since country houses are often made of wood, here the outdoor switching device has found its widest application. This wiring method and type of switch are also used in outbuildings, sheds, basements, cellars, garages, as well as in utility and industrial premises.

Of course, one cannot compare the aesthetics of hidden and open wiring, external and internal switches. Naturally, a room looks prettier when the wires are all hidden away rather than dangling from the walls. But in terms of speed and ease of wiring and connecting the switch, the outdoor type wins.

Keep in mind! If you suddenly need in a non-residential area, for example, in a newly bought new house or apartment, to urgently make at least some lighting to start repairs, use open wiring and an outdoor switch as a temporary option.

Before connecting a two-gang light switch, it would not be superfluous to familiarize yourself with the main characteristics of this switching device. In the modern market of electrical goods, their choice is so huge that you can get confused.

Any model is created for a certain amount of operating current, as a rule, these are 4A, 6A and 10A. If you need to connect a chandelier with a large number of lamps, for reliability it is better to choose a device with a rated operating current of 10A.

To connect the switching device to the mains, wires with a cross section of 1.5 to 2.5 mm2 are usually used. In most switches, wires are connected to its terminals using screw clamps. Now there are more modern models with spring-loaded terminal blocks, in which the installation of the wire is much easier, just insert the stripped tip into the clamping device. We advise you to opt for this option when buying switches.

You can ask the seller what mechanism the keys work on - cam or rocking. And also what the base of the switch is made of, it can be metal or ceramic, the second option is preferable and safer due to the low thermal conductivity of ceramics.

Now it’s easy to choose a model that is suitable for your interior, the market offers a huge selection of switches in any color.

When buying, be sure to click the keys, they should work clearly, be well fixed, and make a characteristic click when turned on / off.

Modern models are often made with backlight. This is very convenient, you can safely opt for this option. In the dark, entering the room, you can easily determine the location of the device by the luminous elements.

Advice! Try to buy switches and materials for connecting it in electrical stores. There is not only a huge selection, but also sales consultants who can explain all the parameters, characteristics and technical capabilities of the selected model.

Structural device and principle of operation

The switch with 2 keys is arranged easily.

The main part is a working mechanism installed in the socket. Its fixation in the mounting box occurs in two ways, depending on the switch model:

  • using a metal frame in which there are specially designed holes for this;
  • using spreader legs.

The main part of the working mechanism are three contacts:

  • one incoming, which must be connected by a wire to a power source;
  • two outgoing wires from them go to two groups of lighting fixtures (or to two different rooms - a toilet and a bathroom).

All these contacts are fixed, and the connection between them is carried out using movable contacts, also located in the working part.

The switch also has a protection consisting of two keys and a frame, they are made of plastic. Each key is attached to one drive mechanism, by pressing it will close the incoming and outgoing contacts, thereby supplying voltage to one group of fixtures. A frame made of dielectric material is attached from above to exclude the possibility of touching the working part of the switch with a hand. It is fixed with latches or two screws.

Now let's summarize this a bit. A wire comes from the junction box to the incoming fixed contact of the switch, through which voltage is supplied from the power source. You press one key, with the help of a movable contact, the fixed ones (incoming and one outgoing) are closed, along the resulting closed chain, voltage is supplied to one group of lamps and the bulbs in it light up. Similarly, press another key, and put the second group of lamps into operation.

The reverse process is exactly the opposite. They pressed the key in the opposite direction, the movable contact opened the circuit between the incoming and outgoing fixed contacts, the voltage can no longer flow through the broken chain and the lamps on the lamps do not light up.

Wiring diagram

The connection diagram of a two-gang switch for two light bulbs provides that the following are already installed in the room:

  • Junction box. It should be located under the ceiling (10-30 cm below it). You can install a new box or use an existing one, the main thing is that it is convenient for you to work in it.
  • Switch 2-key. There are no special requirements for its location, now, as a rule, the device is installed at the level of the lowered hand of an adult.
  • Light fixtures are installed in two rooms (for example, bathroom and toilet). The main work will be done with cartridges.

So, the equipment is installed, it remains only to electrically link everything together, apply voltage to the double switch, and from it to the lamps.

First of all, do not forget to turn off the introductory machine to the apartment in order to exclude the possibility of getting energized!

A two-wire wire is suitable for the junction box, which supplies “phase” and “zero” from the mains.

Three wires are routed to the double switch. One of the junction box, through which the “phase” will flow to the incoming fixed contact, two more phase wires connecting the fixed outgoing contacts to the lamp holders.

There are two contacts in the lamp socket, the “phase” is connected to one, the zero core is attached to the second, which is connected to the “zero” of the mains in the junction box.

In the junction box, the wires are connected by twisting or using special clamps. If you use the first method, then be sure to insulate the place of twisting well and put PVC tubes on top. It is very important that all contact connections are as reliable as possible. Bad contact leads to heating and failure of the equipment.

The most important! The wire connected to the incoming contact of the switch must only be a "phase" and nothing else. If you connect "zero" it will not be wrong, but dangerous. When changing light bulbs, you may be exposed to voltage. Follow this very carefully!

The assembled double switch circuit is tested by turning on the introductory machine to the apartment, then alternately pressing the switch keys and checking the working condition of the bulbs (they should light up).
