What do we remember when we think of our childhood home? Of course, my mother, who cooked breakfast for us, the kitchen environment, where everyone gathered in the evening for dinner. The beauty and convenience of the kitchen are of great importance to all family members. It is important not only to choose the right furniture, wallpaper, but also to decorate the window with curtains.

Long or short

When choosing curtains for the kitchen, every housewife first of all thinks about how long they will be.

In our opinion, it is better to opt for short curtains. This length has several advantages:

  • Curtains do not clutter the kitchen, and in many houses this room does not have a large area;
  • They are light;
  • Do not interfere with cleaning;
  • Practical and easy to care for;
  • Create a comfortable environment;
  • Leave free passage to the window;
  • Short curtains will exclude the possibility of fabric falling into the fire of the stove.

Long curtains, in turn, are difficult to wash and iron, they can lie on the floor, which makes daily cleaning difficult.

What does short curtains mean?

The length, of course, can be different, but all curtains that do not reach the floor by about 30 cm are considered a shortened version. These are curtains up to the window sill, half of the window, only a lambrequin strip, there are a lot of options.

There are many models of such curtains, consider some of them.

Types of short curtains

Roman

Length adjustment is up to you. These curtains can be easily raised and lowered using a mechanism attached to the side of the canvas. It is better to mount such a model on both sashes of the window, then you will be able to independently regulate the amount of light you need, penetrating into the window opening.

Choose a dense fabric for Roman blinds, especially if you decide to make them yourself. Ready-made Roman blinds can be bought at the store. You can opt for a bright fabric with a floral pattern, decorate with folds.

Roman blinds are suitable for kitchens of any style. From classic to ultramodern.

French, Austrian curtains

These are lush curtains up to the windowsill. Romantic natures will definitely like this model. French curtains must be decorated with scallops. Their number depends on your taste.

Decor elements are easily selected in the interior with French curtains. These are glass beads, bows, giant butterflies attached to the canvas. There should be much more scallops on Austrian curtains. This is their only difference from the French.

Roller blinds

In other words, these are blinds. Only such curtains for the kitchen are very different in material and decor from the office style. The fabric is wound on a roll. They are perfect for the kitchens of a multi-storey building, cottages, where you want to hide from prying eyes. Solar kitchens can be darkened with the help of such curtains quickly and efficiently.

The length of the roller blinds is adjustable with a drawstring, which remains invisible in a static position. It is better to supplement such curtains with light tulle, lambrequins. This will completely save the room from the official shade of the interior.
Roller blinds come in different colors, decorated with photo printing paintings.

Advice! Turn your roller blinds into English ones if you're getting a little bored with them. To do this, you need to sew bright ribbons, ribbons into the canvas and use them to tuck the curtain.

Curtains

Curtain, which has a lot of variations in performance. The curtain can be made from one fabric, from small narrow pieces of different colors and textures. Such curtains can be hung in one piece on the entire window, or sliding apart on the sides.

Curtains, as a rule, have an airy frilled structure and are made of light fabric in various colors. This model is decorated with bows, decorative brooches, tied up, stabbed to the sides with beautiful clothespins.

The advantage of the curtain is that it can add volume to any room, create a solemn atmosphere. Great for small rooms.

Cafe Curtains

Unusual curtains that you rarely see in classic kitchens. This design consists of cornices and canvas, put on the cornice with holes inside. The cornice is fixed, in the classic version, in the middle of the window, that is, the curtain does not cover the upper part of the sash. Although for cafe curtains it is possible to attach the cornice and at the top of the window opening.

Such curtains are made of simple fabric that does not require whimsical care. At the bottom of the curtain, make ruffles from a satin ribbon, this element will give the curtain and your kitchen romance, simplicity.

Curtains-cafes are perfect for rooms in the country, small kitchens in apartments. It is not necessary to use ready-made templates for choosing and tailoring curtains, you can combine different styles and models, then your kitchen will be truly unique.

Deciding on the fabric

When choosing fabric for kitchen curtains, you need to consider the following:

  • Linen is very durable in use. Is the most popular when choosing material for kitchen curtains;
  • Cotton is light, lets in a lot of light and air;
  • Silk is a natural material. Kitchens with silk curtains are very elegant;
  • Organza gives the room lightness, visually expands the size of the kitchen;
  • Mixed fabrics (natural and synthetic together) do not crumple, fold into lush frills, which gives the window a solemn look;
  • Dense material will darken the room, this is necessary for residents of the South, and light material will let in more sunlight, which is important for northern regions.

Style

The interior of the kitchen will tell you the style of curtains for your window. It is impossible to hang chic silk tulles with many folds in a rustic-style kitchen. It will look stupid and pretentious.

Decorate the kitchen window, paying attention to the overall atmosphere of this room. The fabric, colors and design of the curtains emphasize the exclusivity of the interior of your kitchen.

All short curtains for the kitchen can be divided into 3 types by style.

classic curtains

These are chic curtains, a large number of folds, frills. Another option is simple, curtains without folds, perhaps curtains. Such curtains are hung on wooden curtains, rings, hooks, metal pipes. In this style, as a rule, long curtains are made. But the classic tulle arch, the Austrian curtain, tucked to one side, look great in a short version.

Traditional

This is the most popular style for decorating a kitchen interior. Rustic-style curtains are considered traditional, they are very short in length, covering only the window opening. These curtains are perfect for dark, shaded rooms.

You can also use cafe curtains. These are sliding curtains. Complementing them with frills, folds, you can make your kitchen cozy. The colors are traditionally used cozy: cage, small flower.

Advice! When choosing cafe curtains, do not forget to install them on each window sash. Then you can easily ventilate the kitchen by opening the doors individually.

Modern

Roller and Roman blinds. Their advantage is that they easily create twilight, falling on the entire window and not letting in light. And during the day they rise and open the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe room to the light.

A short cut curtain will become the center of the kitchen interior if you execute it with a pickup on one side.

Japanese panels have become a boom for kitchen designers in recent years. They are made of textiles with national ornaments. They can be used both as window curtains and as room dividers.

Color

You have decided on the length and style of the curtains, selected the material taking into account our advice, it remains to decide on the color.

  • When choosing a color, any housewife will focus on the color scheme of kitchen furniture and finishes. You don't have to match curtains. They will merge with the rest of the decoration of the room. Choose a tone lighter or darker, perhaps radically different in color from the walls and furniture, but always combined according to the laws of painting and design.
  • If you are a bright personality, individuality, make the curtains a colorful spot that focuses attention on the window. If you want peace, family comfort, then warm bedding shades with discreet patterns, or completely neutral white curtains with heavy beige curtains, will suit you.
  • The most fashionable curtain color this year was orange and green, bright yellow and berry. An ideal option for a bright kitchen would be a combination of orange curtains with light, white blinds.
  • Do not forget to use other elements of decor or kitchen equipment to emphasize the need for choosing exactly the color scheme of the curtains that you have chosen. These can be figures, aprons, dishes, matched in color with curtains and tulle.

Advice! If you can’t decide on the color of the curtains for a long time, and it’s time to finish the repair, buy milk-colored curtains. They will suit any interior.

  • For a bright kitchen, choose less bright curtains, otherwise your guests and family will be full of eyes.
  • Don't be afraid to use patterned curtains. The motifs of the pictures depend on the style of the room. For example, in a techno-style kitchen, images of cities in black and white look great, fashionable today, images of fantastic mechanisms and robots. For country style, bright flowers of small sizes, a cage are perfect.
  • Be careful if your kitchen wallpaper is very colorful, has a decorative pattern. You will suit plain curtains of muted tones.

Design options and types

On sale are presented both unusual types of curtains, suitable only for a certain interior design, and universal ones.

How to choose the right style and design for a certain style, you will read in a separate paragraph below. But first, to make it easier to navigate the names, let's look at what types of curtains for the kitchen can be.

1. Curtains - a universal window design option

Curtains are curtains made of loose fabric that can gently retain and diffuse light. Most often, curtains are understood as long translucent curtains to the floor.

Can be customized to fit any style.

The most familiar and most popular option - transparent tulle without patterns, embroideries and similar decorative details, is both a practical and beautiful solution for window decoration. Makes the room very cozy due to drapery.

Curtains can be hung in one piece or divided into two symmetrical parts.

In a large kitchen or kitchen-dining room, you can complement the tulle with beautiful curtains - thick fabric curtains.

You can add light transparent curtains with a lambrequin or combine several options.

The disadvantage of curtains for the kitchen may be the need for frequent washing. Soft fabric quickly absorbs odors and grease, quickly greasy.

2. Short curtains

Short curtains are a good option if you have a small kitchen or if you need to free up space under the window. For example, in the case when a kitchen set or a dining area is located under it.

Short curtains can also be of several types, depending on the fabric and design.

  • Roman.

One of the most popular in the modern interior.

They can be sewn from absolutely any fabric and fit any design.

Most of all they are appreciated by the owners of small kitchens: they do not take up much space, they are compact. They are adjustable in length using a special lifting mechanism resembling an accordion assembly.

  • Roll.

Like the Roman ones, they can rise and fall, but with the help of a roll mechanism. These are best sewn from a dense and rigid material that holds its shape well and does not absorb grease and other contaminants typical of a kitchen room.

Look better in modern interiors: hi-tech, Scandinavian, loft, minimalism, modern.

Roller blinds can be combined with other curtain options.

  • Cropped classic curtains for the kitchen.

The canvas, as well as long curtains, can be solid or divided into two halves. In both cases, the fabric can be hooked or tied in a knot to let more light into the room.

Short curtains can fit perfectly into classic, traditional and modern interiors.

  • Cafe curtains.

They differ in fastening - on the cornice from the middle of the window.

Look best in Provence, shabby chic or country styles.

Cafe curtains are easy to sew with your own hands. And in a rustic design, their decor looks very harmonious with ribbons, ribbons, lace, inserts from other fabrics.

Such curtains look beautiful and harmonious with a lambrequin.

  • Stained glass.

Mounted on top and bottom of doors. During the daytime can be collected.

The most suitable fabrics for sewing stained glass curtains are organza, polyester, voile.

Suitable for classic and rustic interiors.

  • Curtains-threads (muslin).

Look unusual and original. They have excellent decorative qualities, which is always good in a classic interior, but may not always be appropriate in a modern one (if the curtains are not the main focus).

There are both long and short versions.

Choosing the design of kitchen curtains

To choose the option that suits the design, first of all you need to pay attention to the style, color, pattern, the presence of additional decorative elements (tiebacks, ties, etc.).

For a classic style kitchen

Kitchen curtains in a classic or traditional style are characterized by:

  • white, milky, brown colors;

  • unobtrusive pattern with natural, heraldic motifs, with an antique pattern;

  • drapery, beautiful folds;

  • the presence of additional decorative details - pickups, brushes and other decorations;

  • combination of different styles and fabrics.

Curtains, light tulle in combination with curtains or pelmets, Roman ones with an appropriate pattern or in a characteristic color are suitable for decorating a classic kitchen window.

Austrian curtains are also suitable for classic cuisine.

Modern classics are distinguished by a more concise design, so the curtains will have a minimum of voluminous decorations. The design is mostly monophonic in soothing colors, but it is permissible to use bright colors if they harmoniously place accents.

Country and Provence

For a rustic kitchen design, cafe curtains, stained glass, Roman, long or short curtains with a characteristic checkered pattern, stripes or peas are suitable.

The atmosphere of Provence will be created by a floral print on the fabric in muted colors.

For country, there are also characteristic ways of attaching curtains. They can be fixed on wooden clothespins, on a fishing line, drawstring, with braid.

Modern style

The modern design of curtains for the kitchen will be distinguished by restraint both in color design and in the presence of additional decorative details.

In Scandinavian, hi-tech, minimalism, rolled or Roman plain ones will look good.

Curtains, like classic shortened curtains, are a universal option, which in a modern interior will be distinguished by colors, prints and the presence of additional decorative elements.

Curtains of rich color in a modern interior can be a bright accent.

Modern window curtains are characterized by geometric patterns and abstract patterns.

There are a lot of nuances in choosing curtains for the kitchen. Below are some general tips that will help you navigate through such a huge range of stores in the future.

  1. The most versatile option is plain curtains with a discreet design. Choose their color to match the walls, headset or other furniture, the color of which dominates the interior.

  1. For a small kitchen, it would be a good decision to buy curtains without bulky elements, without layering, splendor and without large patterns.

Short curtains for the kitchen of a small area (up to 8 sq. M) are the best solution.

  1. The pattern, pattern on the fabric or the color of the curtains is best supported in the interior in other elements. For example, all textiles may have one characteristic floral design.

This option is relevant for Provence.

  1. The direction of the pattern or pattern can visually correct the imperfections of the room. For example, low ceilings will visually elongate curtains with vertical stripes. A horizontally oriented pattern will help visually restore the proportions of a narrow kitchen.

  1. Long curtains will hide the imperfections of the walls under the window, close pipes that do not fit into the interior.
  2. Do not choose long curtains if the hob (stove) is too close to the window. This will increase the risk of their ignition with an open window and a draft. Next to the stove, they will get dirty faster;
  3. If there is access to a balcony or loggia from the kitchen, then you can arrange a balcony block with a window with sliding curtains with two canvases. They can become curtains, divided into two parts. Then it will be more convenient to use the balcony door. It is necessary to fix the curtains securely, ensuring their good mobility and sliding along the cornice, hanging, for example, on grommets or movable rings.

Roman, roller and stained glass curtains can also be suitable for window and balcony door decoration.

Having made a major overhaul, or simply deciding to freshen up the atmosphere a little, many are faced with a dilemma: to choose blinds or curtains for the kitchen? Undoubtedly, mega-practical blinds captivate with their functional versatility, but still, in home interior design, most people prefer to see curtains and curtains that exude comfort and warmth, rather than office austerity, subconsciously associated with a busy work schedule. The modern design of curtains for the kitchen is not limited to modest curtains and curtains with tiebacks. Design options for a window opening in the kitchen range from strict minimalist Roman and roller blinds to exotic bamboo and luxuriously pompous curtains with lambrequins in a classic style.

Stylish bamboo curtains fit very harmoniously into almost any interior.

On what type of curtains to choose - you decide. However, in pursuit of beauty and originality, one should not forget about the purpose of the premises. Curtains of expensive textures with rich drapery are best left for the living room or bedroom. When deciding on a suitable model of curtains for the kitchen, designers recommend proceeding from the rule "the simpler the better."

What should be the curtains for the kitchen

The design of kitchen curtains has many features due to the specific functions of this room in the house. When choosing curtains for the kitchen, one should be guided not only by aesthetic and stylistic, but also by purely practical considerations. Luxurious long snow-white-white curtains with lush folds made of delicate material will lose their marketable appearance in a couple of days, and they will simply interfere, so when choosing curtains for the kitchen, you need to remember that first of all they should be:

  • functional- kitchen curtains should be easy to pull and move apart, protect the room from prying eyes and direct sunlight, while letting in light and air for the most comfortable work and a pleasant feeling of freshness. If the stove is located near the window, and you chose light airy material for sewing curtains, take care of fire safety - use special pickups or sew weighting tape along the bottom edge.
  • practical Curtains in the kitchen should be easy to wash. When choosing material, be sure to take into account not only the general style of the interior, but also the specifics of the room where food is prepared and eaten daily. To avoid unnecessary hassle, bet on fabrics that do not absorb odors, which accumulate a minimum of dirt, dust and soot. It can be either natural materials with special fire-retardant, dust- and dirt-repellent impregnations, or synthetics, or modern mixed fabrics with an admixture of synthetic fibers, combining the functionality and practicality of synthetics with the unique aesthetics of natural materials.

The modern design of kitchen curtains is a maximum of functionalism and a minimum of details.

Modern curtain design for the kitchen: what to choose for the kitchen window

The modern design of kitchen curtains is a maximum of functionalism and a minimum of details. The best solution would be unpretentious short curtains, Roman, roller or bamboo blinds, acting on the principle of blinds, or Austrian curtains. Classic curtains with curtains are appropriate in spacious, well-ventilated rooms, as well as in kitchens combined with a dining or living room.

Light curtains for the kitchen

Lightweight fabric and tulle curtains will be the best solution for a small kitchen. They do not clutter up the window opening, allowing you to use it as a table or additional work surface, and always create a warm homely atmosphere in the room. A transparent tulle curtain will help emphasize the beauty of a classic wooden set. Curtains with ties and cafe curtains are perfect for country and Provence style.

Light tulle curtains in the kitchen are associated with carefree summer days, light wind and sunlight.

Roman curtains

Easy to use, concise in design, practical and elegant, Roman blinds will perfectly fit into any style of kitchen: from classic and retro to hi-tech and avant-garde. The universal method of mounting on the wall, ceiling or directly in the light opening of the window will allow you to make the most of the usable space, which is never superfluous in the kitchen. When unfolded, Roman blinds are a flat canvas, which, when lifted, gathers into soft, graceful folds. In interior design, they are used in places where it is undesirable or impossible to install wide curtains.

Elegant Roman blinds will perfectly fit into any style of kitchen, except for deliberately pretentious ones.

The level of such a curtain is very convenient to adjust, shading exactly the part of the window that is needed, which allows you to control the amount of light flux. If desired, you can pick up Roman blinds that will perfectly scatter sunlight even when lowered. On a wide window, for more effective control of the level of illumination, it is advisable to hang out not one strip, but several at once. Due to the impregnation with special compositions that protect the fabric from direct sunlight, Roman blinds almost do not heat up in the sun and do not fade, retaining their original beauty for a long time. In addition, they are reliable, practical, simple and easy to care for: if necessary, they can always be removed from the eaves and washed.

Due to the variety of materials and colors, the decorative possibilities of Roman blinds have increased significantly.

Roller blinds

Recently, roller blinds have become increasingly competitive with traditional fabric curtains. And this is not surprising, because they have a lot of advantages over other types of curtains. They are compact, practical, durable, easy to use and maintain, and the variety of textures and colors will allow you to choose your own option for any style of kitchen interior. Roller blinds, also known as fabric roller blinds, roller blinds or roller blinds, are characterized by a simple design that even a child can handle and versatility: they fit windows of any width, easily attached to a wall, ceiling or installed directly in a window opening.

Traditional fabric curtains compete with roller blinds, which ideally perform the function of protection from bright sunlight.

On a wide window, you can use both a single sheet and several separate curtains, which will allow you to experiment with the level of illumination of the room and make each window sash autonomous from its neighbors. When unfolded, the flat canvas tightly closes the window opening, and when opened, it folds into a neat roll at the top of the window. When choosing materials for roller blinds in the kitchen, one should take into account not only their dirt and dust-repellent properties, and fire resistance, but also the desired degree of darkening of the room. Roller blinds with minimal blackout reliably protect the room from prying eyes, while almost completely letting in sunlight, while roller blinds made of black out fabric are completely opaque. Organically complement the kitchen interior roller blinds with a thematic pattern: fruits, vegetables, glasses of wine, etc.

Roller blinds for the kitchen, having an original color, can easily perform a decorative function

Bamboo curtains for the kitchen

Ethnic oriental motifs will bring exotic notes to the interior of the kitchen, fill the room with a light aroma of herbs and natural wood, and “melt” the coldness of even the most cutting-edge hi-tech. Bamboo curtains are a fabric woven in a special way from bamboo cane, natural fabrics and jute straw. They are very light, compact, and most importantly - moisture resistant. The treatment of the lamellas with a special varnish additionally protects them from mechanical damage and exposure to sunlight. In addition, during operation, bamboo does not emit toxic substances and does not cause allergies, which allows you to safely use this material not only in the kitchen, but even in the decoration of children's rooms. Numerous shades and weaving methods will allow you to choose the best option for any kitchen interior.

Bamboo curtains will bring exotic notes to the interior of the kitchen, and the soft diffused light penetrating through them will create a cozy atmosphere.

Austrian curtains in the interior of the kitchen

If you want something more luxurious and pompous, but at the same time practical, you should pay attention to the Austrian curtains, which are a kind of fusion of Roman and French curtains. Austrian curtains rise and fall similarly to Roman ones, but unlike the latter, they do not have horizontal clamps, due to which, when compressed, the fabric is collected throughout the entire width of the curtain not into uniform soft horizontal folds, but into semicircular ones. As a result, we get a “Roman” severity, diluted along the bottom with scalloped folds in the spirit of French romanticism. When lowered, the Austrian curtain is similar to a regular curtain. Lush scallops are formed only when lifting, bringing an atmosphere of celebration, luxury and sophistication to the interior of the kitchen. Austrian curtains look no less impressive than classic curtains and curtains, but they take up much less space, which allows them to be used to decorate small window openings, including non-standard ones.

Classic curtains and lambrequins

Classic curtains, which are a combination of light tulle curtains with sliding straight curtains, are more appropriate in the living room or bedroom. For a kitchen, especially a small one, they are too bulky, uncomfortable and also unsafe. The classic design of the kitchen window is suitable only for spacious, well-ventilated rooms in which the stove is located far from the window, as well as for a kitchen-studio combined with a living room, dining room or bedroom, especially if one window combines several functional areas. Lambrequins will give additional expressiveness, solemnity, luxury and sophistication to the interior of the kitchen. Curtains with lambrequins will not only become an original window decoration, but also help to visually change its proportions.

Combination of several types of curtains

Roman, roller and bamboo blinds can be used both independently and in various combinations with tulle curtains, pelmets and various light curtains. An ideal complement would be transparent and translucent curtains made of airy light fabrics, without voluminous coattails and lush folds.

At the same time, a good choice of this accessory can transform even an unsightly design, while hastily hung curtains that do not match in color or style can ruin even the most interesting idea.

Choosing curtains for the kitchen today is not so difficult, for this there are:

  • a huge selection of colors, colors, materials, design methods, draperies, curtains, curtains;
  • lots of online tips, renovation and design shows, style tutorials, feng shui and other tips;
  • elementary principles of color, combinations of fabrics, harmony of style and other rules that are easy to find in textbooks on aesthetics, fine arts;
  • acquaintances and friends with good taste who can tell you how to choose the right curtains for the window in the kitchen.

We will consider the basic principles for selecting this type of kitchen accessories in terms of interior design, color and style, as fundamental and to avoid annoying mistakes.

Convenience and practicality

The first principle of choosing curtains for the kitchen is convenience. The kitchen is a place where there is a constant intensive process of turning raw foods into food, which is accompanied by high temperatures, steam, the spread of odors, splashes of water and grease, and other accompanying phenomena. They, in turn, lead to rapid contamination of everything that is in close or distant proximity to the working area.

Practical types of fabric allow you to quickly wash stains

Curtains, curtains and curtains in the kitchen tend to quickly get dirty, imperceptibly covered with soot. New curtains darken within a few months after the renovation of the repair, and a zealous hostess should take them off and wash them regularly.

So that this does not cause inconvenience and does not constitute a problem, it is advisable to buy materials that are easy to remove and wash, dry and hang. Usually, light, natural and synthetic fabrics are chosen for kitchen curtains - they are easy to care for and do not require much effort.

Another thing is the size and choice of place for curtains or curtains, based on the principle of practicality. Ideally, they should not be in close proximity to the stove - this is not only impractical, but also dangerous in terms of possible ignition.

Curtains near the sink will not only get dirty more often, but also get wet, the paint on materials with prints can deteriorate from constant moisture

The length must be chosen in such a way as to avoid contamination. Agree, even beautiful white curtains hanging to the windowsill will be constantly stained and streaked if there is a sink nearby. You should not buy curtains that are too long if the working area is located directly next to the window. But if the kitchen window is in the dining area, then the owners have more freedom in choosing the length and method of draping the curtains.

Interior design and style

For curtains in the kitchen, it is also important that they are in harmony with the rest of the decoration in the room. The principle of harmony and the right choice of style must be respected. Today, there are many ways to combine different colors, shades, textures, materials and patterns, while maintaining them in one common style. The easiest way to choose curtains is to buy products that are suitable for the general stylistic orientation.

Classic style

The classic is suitable for an expensive old-style kitchen

If the room is decorated in a traditional classic style (strict and simple lines, solid natural materials and colors), then the curtains in the kitchen should be of the same style.

  • heavy and massive curtains hanging from the baguette to the floor, tied with a special string on the side of the window;
  • tapestries with braid, beautifully draped in cascades and waves, hanging from the eaves;
  • a combination of denser materials and light transparent tulle curtains;
  • other options that gravitate towards luxury (fluffy frills, lace, ruffles, large folds of fabric).

For curtains in the kitchen in a classic style, harmony with other elements of the interior is important. They should go well with wallpaper, and with flooring and other surfaces.

It looks very good when the curtains on the windows echo in color and even have a similar pattern with a tablecloth on the table, or soft cushions on the sofa in the dining area. Of course, you don’t need to overdo it and decorate the entire kitchen in a cage or a rosette, you need to observe the measure in everything. And again, stick to the principle of practicality.

For example, if the kitchen is small and located in the northern part of the apartment, then heavy massive curtains will not work, as they will deprive the kitchen of natural light, which is already insufficient. Long and expensive curtains do not need to be hung next to the cutting surface or stove, because of this, the hostess will have to remove and wash them every week.

If you want classics, then it is not necessary to choose long curtains. You can get by with short ones hanging from the eaves no more than 1 meter, but with decorative elements (frills, ruffles, flounces). It will look very beautiful, and will be both practical and seasoned in a classic style.

Modern style

For lovers of modern style, Roman blinds and roller blinds are suitable, as they are more relevant for high-tech style.

For a modern style in the choice of interior elements today there are much more options for curtains in the kitchen. You can choose from hundreds of different types of materials, focusing on the more specific features of your interior. In addition to traditional fabric curtains and curtains, you can use roller blinds, roller blinds or Roman blinds, horizontal and vertical blinds and other types of products.

The answer to the question of how to choose curtains for kitchen windows in a modern style should also comply with the principles of practicality and expediency. In this regard, modern style gives us more opportunities to choose at the same time a beautiful, and no less practical and convenient option.

The most rational in terms of practicality and convenience are:

  • Roleta, roller blinds - that is, those that have the form of a roll of thick cotton or other fabric, mounted on a round support above the window. They are easily rolled up and removed under the ceiling during the day, and in the evening they simply close the window using a simple mechanism. It is enough to pull the cord to bring the canvas into the desired position. This is a very practical option that can be installed even above the work surface. They become dirty more slowly, since in the folded state the contamination surface is minimal. If necessary, they can be cleaned with a damp cloth to remove dust.
  • Roman curtains. They have a similar folding mechanism using a simple rope mechanism, but they do not look like a roll, but a piece of fabric in which there are longitudinal inserts with lacing. Roman blinds do not fold, but fold up, forming a large drapery. It is also convenient and quite practical. The advantage of these types is that they are more like classic fabric curtains, unlike paper roller blinds.

As for blinds, they cannot be called curtains in the traditional sense of the word, but they can also be used as a replacement for kitchen curtains. Today the market offers many options for blinds: vertical, horizontal, plastic, bamboo, white, colored.

You can choose them, depending on the direction in interior design. Their advantage is that they do not get dirty like cloth, they are easy to clean with a damp cloth with mild soapy water.

Color and pattern

The choice of curtains, curtains and curtains by color is an exciting and interesting task for every housewife. The principles of the combination of different colors and shades are quite diverse, which gives a great degree of freedom for choice.

If you want to make the curtains the highlight of the room, choose a colorful print for them.

Again, it is desirable to adhere to the principle of harmony, choosing a curtain color that does not contradict the rest of the design elements. It is desirable that the curtains overlap in color with other elements. Otherwise, if you choose curtains for a color that is no longer in the interior, then it will be difficult to “justify” it.

Universal color combinations are white and black, white and blue, white and green and other shades. White, as a neutral and versatile color, suits almost everyone. The choice in favor of white or cream, light beige, milky curtains is usually always successful, especially in the northern and western parts of the apartment, where there is little natural light.

Calm and non-flashy shades - blue, lilac, light green, lemon, lime and others are also well suited for decorating the kitchen. In this regard, the answer to the question of how to choose the right curtains for the kitchen should also be correlated with the principle of color harmony with other elements.

For example, if the walls in the kitchen are painted blue, then a great option would be to choose blue curtains, for purple walls - light lilac, green - lime or lemon. You can choose an inversion when the curtains are matched in the same color scheme, but darker in color than the walls.

Choose light but not bright colors, so the blue color will not stand out too much and not become boring soon

When choosing curtains, you can also focus on materials with a pattern, which also needs to be chosen correctly. Materials with the same type of pattern - polka dots, checkered, stripes - can be both in classic and more modern styles. A classic option that can be used to decorate a vintage or Provence style kitchen is plaid curtains in shades of blue, red, gray, green.

In this case, you can get by with both two pieces of fabric, and combine longitudinal curtains with a coattail - a short horizontal strip that is hung on a cornice parallel to the floor. Such curtains should be made of natural fabric - linen or cotton, which will make them an example of a cozy and homely Provence style.

In the style of vintage and Provence, there are often solutions when the curtains on the windows echo the curtains on the old cabinets, niches used instead of doors. It is very stylish and effective, especially if the furniture is also classic, vintage or artificially aged.

Today, thanks to the wide variety of curtains on the market, as well as almost absolute freedom in the choice of design and combinations of colors, materials and textures, it is not necessary to adhere to strict rules in choosing.

In some types of materials there are accents that visually complement the room.

In answering the question of how to choose a curtain rod for curtains on the kitchen window or which curtains to hang, you need to be guided by your own taste. Indeed, for the hostess of the kitchen, it is important that she likes all the elements of the interior and decor - her mood and desire to “create” for the family depend on this.

I think you will agree:

It is difficult to find curtains that will embellish the room and hide its flaws.

BUT it is even more difficult to choose curtains for the kitchen. Curtains that distract attention from the natural "shortcomings" of this room: kitchen utensils, tools, dishes.

The choice of curtains depending on the style of the kitchen

Modern style

If your kitchen is made in modern style, then you should choose standard curtains made of synthetic, slightly shiny fabrics that are easy to care for. For such an interior, modern panel or roll varieties are also well suited: Japanese and even ordinary blinds. But the original, casually decorated draperies made of light translucent fabric will look especially impressive: they will emphasize the airiness of the kitchen and add light to it.

In the modern interior of the kitchen, photo curtains will look stylish and extravagant. As a rule, for photo printing, a picture is selected that is completely unexpected for the overall design of the room. For example, it can be an image of the Brooklyn Bridge on curtains in a Provence-style kitchen, and photo-curtains with views of the Eiffel Tower will effectively complement the kitchen, decorated in the style of a French cafe.

Classic style

Serenity and comfort, elegance of forms and furnishings - these are the characteristic features of design in a classic style. Classic curtains will complete the look of such an interior, favorably present expensive furniture and bring the very zest that will make the atmosphere truly unforgettable. In a classic kitchen, try to avoid bright accents, rich and deep colors that can make the atmosphere heavy and uncomfortable.

East style

The exotic interior of the kitchen, with its motley multicolor and underlined luxury, is perfect for lovers of exquisite sophistication. The mysterious oriental atmosphere will be perfectly complemented and emphasized by photo curtains with a calligraphic ornament applied to them or an exquisite pattern. Feel free to choose multi-level curtains with jabots, swags, lambrequins, cascades. Shiny fabrics embroidered with gold, bright colors, fringes and tassels, intricate arabesque patterns - all the highlight is in the details!

Another interesting option for an oriental style kitchen is an organza veil with oriental or floral motifs embroidered on it.

Provence

It is very easy to choose curtains for such a kitchen, because almost any curtains are suitable here! The main condition is that they should not have complex drapery, elaborate details, excessive splendor. The classic version is light curtains and a thin curtain with an English, Austrian, Roman theme. French-style curtains must be complemented with ties, loops, drawstrings. Choose textiles from light, light, maximally translucent fabrics to let maximum light into your colorful kitchen!

Please note that the cornice in your kitchen is not massive, otherwise all the lightness and simplicity of the interior in the Provence style will be lost. It should not stand out, but only elegantly emphasize and complement the design of the window.

Country

Of particular importance in the kitchen with a country design is textiles: there should be a lot of it, and it is he who sets the whole style of the room. The rustic interior is characterized by the use of the same fabric for decorating all details: curtains, napkins, tablecloth, chair covers - they are all made from the same material, captivating the audience with their modest simplicity and creating an atmosphere of quiet home comfort. It can also be an excellent option for country-style kitchen design.

For country-style kitchen curtains, light shades are most often chosen, for example, fabrics in white or cream colors, but always with a pattern! The colors of the curtains characteristic of the country are striped, plaid, flowered, farm-themed images (pets, village houses, ears of corn, garden fruits). Among curtains of non-light shades, options for red, pinkish, yellow, orange, red, orange, light green or pale blue are also acceptable.

In country-style Western kitchens, it is customary to decorate windows with a simple lambrequin, marquise or frill. For example, you can sew a lush lambrequin from bright fabric in a flower or in a cage.

High tech

High-tech kitchen design is not only fashionable and original, but also practical. Stylish chrome surfaces will be beautifully combined with models of modern curtains, or the window can be left unchanged without decorating it with textiles.

Minimalism

A characteristic feature of such a kitchen is the maximum of free space, light, air. For the successful implementation of this task, it is good to use natural light. The window can be visually expanded with lightweight fabric blinds or roller blinds, which are easy to hide in a cassette if necessary. If the window is small, it is better to choose translucent, which will let in more light and make the space even more free.

There are also options for minimalist kitchens, where rich-colored curtains are combined in an ensemble with a modern backsplash and ceramic tile trim and are bright fashionable accents in the interior.

How to choose the color of curtains

The color palette is a chic tool for bringing any design ideas to life and creating a dream interior. In addition, it is an indispensable assistant that helps to visually expand the space, brighten up all the bumps and emphasize the advantages of the layout. For a small kitchen, this is especially true, so designers advise choosing light curtains in lavender, blue, light green or pearl colors for it.

Textile design is also acceptable in dark colors, but only for lambrequin curtains or Roman curtains, so that the window decor does not interfere with the penetration of light into the room.

The choice of color can also be dictated by the style of the room. For a country kitchen, this is usually a light-colored fabric with pastel stripes or bright colors; for high-tech, all colors of a cold range; in a classic style, plain curtains or an ensemble of two or three colors are acceptable.

  • If the kitchen windows face the sunny side and illuminate the room well, you can choose curtains in darker shades, if not, the curtains can only be made of light translucent fabrics.
  • If your kitchen is made in bright colors, it is better to opt for simple monochrome curtains to balance the balance.
  • You can not come up with anything extreme and just pick up curtains of the same color as the facades of the kitchen or.

Curtains for a small kitchen

The main function of curtains in such a narrow space is to let as much sunlight into the room as possible. Therefore, the best choice for a small kitchen, regardless of its style, are translucent curtains made of plain light fabrics that will literally fill the room with air. Forget about complex shapes and pretentiousness of details: curtains with lambrequins, rich draperies - all this is certainly beautiful, but it will only pile up the interior.

So, the basic rules for choosing curtains for small kitchens:

  • The textile material should be light and weightless, ideally - tulle or plain plain fabric. Say "no" to large drawings; discreet ornaments or small patterns are acceptable, but nothing more. Vertical stripes on the curtains will visually increase the height of the ceilings.
  • In addition to traditional curtain models, Roman, French, Austrian, roller blinds, blinds and their various variations are also well suited.

Home blinds with a photo pattern printed on them will transform any kitchen, as well as add depth and expressiveness to its interior. Tulle blinds will look great in a classic interior, and for ethnic cuisine, for example, bamboo blinds are best suited.

  • In a small kitchen, every free space is worth its weight in gold! And the window sill is no exception: curtains should provide free access to it, and not get in the way all the time at hand. The ideal option is short curtains or roller blinds, Roman, French curtains, which are easy to raise if necessary.
  • If the window is very small, you can visually enlarge it by hanging curtains that are wider than the opening itself.

Curtains in the kitchen with a balcony

If your kitchen has it, then you can be congratulated on this - this is a great addition to the kitchen space, which can be designed as a cozy seating area or used for storage.

You need to choose curtains that will not block access to the balcony. The opening of the door should not be hindered by either lambrequins from above, or additional veils on the side, or flounces from below. It is also important to consider that when opening the balcony door, the air from the stove will fly towards the curtains, which means that they must be made of durable, wear-resistant, non-fading materials. If the gas stove is located near the window, it is better to choose fire-resistant fabrics.

Here are some options for models for a kitchen with a balcony that take into account these features:

  • Roller blinds, which can be combined so as to close the window exactly to the windowsill, and the door to the floor.
  • Vertical blinds- practical and fashionable - for a kitchen with a balcony in a modern style.
  • Combined curtains. For example, you can hang Roman blinds on the window, and close the balcony door with a “Japanese” panel. When making them, you need to use one fabric in order to maintain the harmony of the composition.
  • Lambrequin perfectly unites window and door curtains, and in addition, masks the cornice and beautifully decorates the balcony. True, such a lambrequin should be high so as not to interfere with the free opening of the door.

What if there are two windows?

Designers are unanimous in their opinion that the best solution for such a kitchen, where windows eat up most of the space, is to leave them without textile trim, just picking up bright frames. Alternatively, Roman blinds are acceptable, which are easily removed to fully illuminate the room. If the kitchen is spacious and there are no problems with the area, feel free to place large decorative curtains on the windows.

Curtains for the kitchen in Khrushchev

The biggest problem in such kitchens is the critical lack of space. Therefore, the curtains in Khrushchev should not clutter up the space and block access to the windowsill, but at the same time their function is to close the room from prying eyes and regulate the quality of the room's illumination. To solve these interior problems, the following varieties are best suited:

  • Roller blinds. They are compact and easy to care for, easily rolled up if necessary.
  • Roman curtains. Elegant, easy to care for, combine minimalism and functionality. When raising the bottom edge, they easily gather into beautiful wavy folds. The only drawback is that the shape of such curtains does not allow the windows to be fully opened.
  • Pleated blinds are a curtain made of a special pleated fabric, which is fixed on both sides into a single structure. They can separately cover the upper or lower half of the window, which helps to regulate the lighting of the kitchen. Easy to care for: a simple vacuum cleaner is suitable for cleaning them.
  • Transparent curtain, hung on loops, hooks, eyelets. If desired, it can also be supplemented with sun blinds on the window frame.
  • Lambrequin as a full-fledged window decor, or in combination with blinds or blackout curtains.

A noticeable drawback of a small room is a quickly annoying interior. An easy way to prevent this problem is to diversify regularly. Purchase several options for curtains and periodically change models depending on your mood or season.

What to choose for the kitchen-living room

Recently, studio apartments have become very popular, where the kitchen and living room are combined into one room. In one part they prepare food, and in the other they rest - this difference should be emphasized with the help of textile window decoration. For example, in the living room, curtains can be made front doors, and in the kitchen - simple and practical. For this, professional decorators advise choosing companion fabrics from collections sewn in the same color and style. Add fabric from the first window to the curtains for the second and you have a great composition.

What are the curtains?

Curtains with lambrequin

Pelmets are beautiful frills, special fabric finishes that serve as a decoration for the cornice. Perhaps the most beautiful of all decorative elements for curtains, it solemnly decorates the window, making it more expressive, and giving the entire interior a rich and luxurious look.

When choosing curtains with a pelmet, always consider the size and shape of the window, and also make sure that they blend well with the style of the room and the rest of the kitchen decor. It is better to give preference to fabrics that are easy to use, will not accumulate a lot of dust, dirt and absorb all kitchen odors. There are also special fireproof lambrequins, which are impregnated with substances that prevent the ignition of the fabric.

short curtains

Short curtains in the kitchen, in addition to their main decorative function, have a huge number of advantages!

  • This model allows you to use additional space at the window. Short curtains, even when curtained, do not interfere with free access to the windowsill.
  • Ideal for window decoration in the kitchen with a balcony.
  • Visually make the kitchen more spacious and airy, which is especially good for rooms with a small area.
  • They serve as a bright color accent in the interior. If your “color experiment” fails, the curtains can be easily and quickly replaced with new ones.
  • Bright curtains of small length are more comfortable perceived by the eye than the same long ones.
  • Easy care: short curtains are easy to take off, wash, dry, iron and hang up again.
  • A wide range of design solutions for short curtains allows you to choose the right option for a kitchen of any style.

Curtains on rings

Such curtains, as a rule, are sewn from translucent lightweight fabrics. Their folds fall beautifully and sway from the breath of the wind, filling the kitchen space with freshness and cleanliness. The rings are quite simply arranged, so all the attention goes to the fabric, which should be beautiful and original. Therefore, in the manufacture of such curtains, preference is given to expensive exclusive textiles.

Kitchen curtains on rings look great in interiors of all styles. Wooden rings will be beautifully combined with country and Provence style kitchens, metal ones are suitable for modern and minimalist kitchens.

Curtains with bay window

For such curtains, it is better to select lightweight fabrics so that the bay window does not look like a theater curtain. In large kitchens, such a curtain design will be relevant. If you correctly combine several different colors and textures, this will give the room additional depth. When decorating bay windows, choose short curtains, window sill-length, or standard roller blinds, Roman, French or blinds. Do not cover the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe window with draperies, otherwise there will be no light in the room.

If your kitchen has several bay windows, then you should order a separate curtain for each window. But if the bay window has a semicircular shape, then one large curtain will be enough.

Curtains on grommets

An interesting interior accent for the kitchen, which looks modern and stylish, and at the same time easy to implement. The eyelets themselves are rings of different diameters that hold the curtain on the cornice, forming beautiful tails from it. When choosing these original curtains, it is important to know a few points:

  • Textile. The heavier the fabric you choose, the larger the folds on the curtains will be. If you want large beautiful waves, feel free to buy heavy dense materials. But if you want transparency and lightness in the interior, tulle and nylon are more suitable for you.
  • Practicality. Say no to loose fabrics such as velor, velvet, reversible tapestries.
  • Length. In a small kitchen, long curtains are only possible with lightweight fabrics. Traditionally, for small kitchens, they choose the length to the windowsill: this is both beautiful and practical. If the dimensions of your room allow you to experiment - feel free to choose curtains of any length that you like.
  • Combination. The classic combination is light tulle, and massive curtains on top. If you, according to family tradition, prefer such a combination, complement the curtains on the grommets with Roman or rolled curtains sewn from transparent fabric. So you save the necessary level of illumination in your kitchen.

Beautiful curtains with your own hands - easy!

For lovers of needlework, it will not be difficult to decorate the window in the kitchen beautifully on their own, without resorting to the help of designers and decorators. If you have a sewing machine and a great desire, it will not be difficult to sew a beautiful curtain of the model you need.

First of all, you need to do some calculations:

  • Measure from the cornice down to the desired curtain length. Add 6 cm for the bottom collar and 3 cm for the top hem. The total will be the length of the fabric required for the curtains.
  • Measure the length of the cornice, multiply by one and a half and add 4 centimeters for the hem on the sides. This will be the width of the required fabric for a standard curtain. If you want to make the drapery more expressive, multiply the length of the cornice by 2.

The next step is to buy a piece of fabric. Tulle, organza and other synthetic materials are suitable for making curtains, but it is still preferable to select natural materials like linen and cotton. Some retail chains also offer interior textiles: these fabrics are made from natural fibers and impregnated with special dirt and dust repellents. They are resistant to fading, do not wrinkle and are easily erased. When choosing a color, remember that it should be in harmony in color and style with the design of the kitchen.

cutting

The simplest pattern for curtains is one or two rectangles. If you have a blended or cotton fabric, it is better to moisten and iron it well before opening it. Measure along the edge the required length equal to the height of the curtain plus seam allowances. Pull out one or two threads along the width of the cut, which will point to the cut line. Also pull out the threads in the place of the proposed turn. This is the perfect markup for future curtains.

Sewing

First of all, machine the upper edge of the curtain on a typewriter: fold the top allowance, bast it, and then sew on the braid for the curtain. The stitch length is better to take from 4 to 6 mm. Tuck and process also the side sections, in the process hiding the edges from the curtain tape inward.

Attention! When tucking the edges of the braid, be sure to leave the ends of the cords accessible! When the curtain is ready, by pulling these cords, you can easily adjust it to the width you need.

The next step is to fold and process the bottom of the curtain. Fix all the threads well and iron the finished product. Attach a new beautiful curtain to the cornice with special hooks.
