Paint the door gold. How to paint a product with gold paint at home? Do-it-yourself "gold" coloring technology. Artistic acrylic paint

Starting repairs in his home, any owner is trying to save money or reduce the cost of it.

So, it is possible to postpone the replacement of doors, trying to restore the old ones with high quality.

You can master the secrets of this simple skill and learn some of the subtleties yourself!

Input structure update

The easiest and most affordable way to update a door is to cover it with fresh paint, as the old layer spoils the aesthetic appearance and changes color over the years. Initially, you need to decide what the structure will be covered with:

  • stain, tinting varnish;
  • thick enamel, acrylic, polyurethane oil paint.

When choosing a coating, we are based on individual preferences, but it is worth listening to the advice of experienced craftsmen - finishers.

Preparing material for painting

The quality of the desired result directly depends on the thoroughness of the process of preparing the restored material. For convenience, the door must be removed from the hinges and laid on supports (you can use the required number of stools). Next, you need to do the following:

Previous layers of paint and other materials must be carefully removed down to the wood. For these purposes, it is possible to use a grinder, or manually using sandpaper, which is securely attached to the bar for convenience.

  • Then, to eliminate small cracks, dents and scratches, the canvas is polished.
  • We putty noticeable imperfections with a special putty on wood.
  • Then, when the putty is completely dry, we re-sand with a finer-grained sandpaper.

After finishing work, the door must be cleaned of dust, wiped with a damp cloth, dried, and you can proceed to direct painting.

Standard door painting process

The paint must be applied evenly without unnecessary smudges and stains. It is most convenient to use a special sprayer, but it is too expensive and costly in finance. Therefore, it is better to use a conventional panel brush and roller, which are suitable for working with almost any material of all types.

Important: before starting work, it is reasonable to fluff the brush and remove excess protruding hairs that may remain on the painted door at the end.

Painting proceeds depending on the type of construction:

If the door is paneled, then painting begins with a brush, which you need to go through all the recesses, without taking too much paint on the brush. The second stage will be work with a roller.

But the shield door is processed in several steps. It is advantageous to apply the coating with a roller, which does not leave unnecessary stripes and hairs. Work begins from the end - from the left corner to the right down.

Then leave the surface for the time specified by the paint manufacturer for complete drying. The second layer is applied in the longitudinal direction, and the third - opposite to the first layer.

varnishing a wooden door

A great option that will suit many styles is painting the door leaf with varnish. For this option, you must follow the correct technology:

  • Prepare the material in the same way as before applying paint.
  • Mix the varnish thoroughly until a homogeneous composition, to eliminate bubbles.
  • The first layer (primer) is applied varnish, diluted with water or solvent. The application should be intense enough, without slowing down, so as not to leave stains.
  • After drying, walk on the primer with a fine sandpaper to eliminate small irregularities.
  • The next layer of varnish is applied in a cross direction to the previous one.

Layers are applied in the right amount until a perfectly smooth shiny surface is obtained.

Observing simple rules and techniques, it will not be difficult to paint the door or varnish it on your own, while it is beneficial to save the budget during repairs.

Photo ideas how to paint doors

As a rule, old doors have a high-strength panel and a high-quality box, but the appearance deteriorates over time due to a thick coating. As one of the budget renovation methods, ordinary wood door paint is used. In this material, you will learn how to paint wooden doors, and get acquainted with other modern ways to renovate the coating at home.

Rice. 1. Door before and after painting

Choice of paintwork materials

LKM are classified according to the following criteria:

  • By composition (on a water and organic basis);
  • By protective action (against organic and chemical substances, mechanical influences, changes in humidity and temperature);
  • By the method of use (internal, external, combined);
  • By type (impregnation, paints, stains, varnishes).

1. Paints. Can be used on new and old doors. There are no difficulties with the choice, but due to incompetence, people choose the wrong material. Paints and varnishes are transparent and opaque. The first compositions include certain pigments that exhibit a woody structure. But opaque coatings are often used, consisting of organic solvents (oil, alkyd and other types).

The most popular is alkyd enamel, the cost of which is affordable. This coating has high strength, a wide range of shades. But the enamel smells bad, its unpleasant smell remains for 2 days, so they work with it on the street, after removing the canvas from the hinges or freeing up the room. An alternative solution is acrylic enamel, which also has many colors but no toxic smell. The dried paint does not have much strength, so it is additionally treated with acrylic varnish to protect it from mechanical stress.

Rice. 2. Paint on wood

A more resistant coating for wood doors is nitro paint, which has optimal strength. The composition is toxic, sometimes leads to allergic manifestations, so you need to work with it in protective equipment. If an old surface is treated with nitro-paint, the preparation and grinding of the panel is carried out in advance to a light shade.

2. Lucky. They belong to the traditional coatings that give wood a shine and protect its surface. Typically, varnish is used to cover doors in rooms with high humidity (baths and saunas).

There are many different varnishes:

  • Acrylic. The material is resistant to negative influences, humidity and ultraviolet. Distinguish matte and glossy finish without toxic odor.
  • Nitrocellulose. Varnish can be used to process wooden doors. The coating is not suitable for processing bathrooms and baths, as it has insufficient strength and cracks quickly.
  • Lacquer with a water base. It does not have an unpleasant odor. Material properties may vary due to different additives.
  • Polyurethane. The varnish has high strength and adhesion to wood, it can be matte, semi-gloss and glossy. In addition to wood, polyurethane varnishes can be applied to parquet, veneer, countertops.
  • Oil varnish. There is no strong odor. The composition contains a lot of fatty resins, so the old coating is removed from the door in advance. It is better to apply with a brush because of the thick consistency.
  • polyester. The composition has a pungent odor, is highly durable, but toxic, therefore it is suitable for processing street doors.

It is better to paint interior doors with an acrylic or polyurethane coating, and resistant materials are suitable for external work or rooms with high humidity..

Rice. 3. Varnish on wood

3. Wood stains. The task of such compositions is toning the tree and temporary protection from negative influences. But a constant renewal of the layer is required, which emphasizes the wood structure.

There are several options:

  • With lacquer base (azure). The composition reduces the duration of work, but it is difficult to achieve aesthetics, so a plain surface can be obtained by spraying with an airbrush;
  • With oils. Before use it is necessary to dilute with solvent;
  • With water. It dries longer, but there is no toxic smell. The composition penetrates deeply, giving a richer shade and a clear pattern that looks beautiful;
  • Alcohol based. It dries quickly, but is more expensive and has a strong smell.

Fig.4. Stain for a wooden door

To protect the wood from fungus, moisture and dirt, oil wax is used, which penetrates deep into the surface. Coating adds strength and shine.

If you choose how to stain the surface of the door, then you need to take into account the duration of drying and the effect obtained.

Preparing the canvas for painting

First, the door is removed from the hinges, placed on a flat surface. Before using alkyd paint, it is better to place the canvas on the street or in a well-ventilated area. The door is then locked so that all elements are accessible. The fittings are also removed or wrapped in foil, and the locks are sealed with adhesive tape.

Door cleaning

Preliminary cleaning, removal of old enamel or paint. For such purposes, it is better to use a grinder, and in its absence, you can peel off the layer with medium grit sandpaper. The bubbles that appear are eliminated with a hair dryer, which heats up the paint layer to remove it with a spatula. Washing compositions are a costly and simple way to clean the surface.

Rice. 5. Surface cleaning and grinding

Layers of old paint can be removed with an abrasive nozzle on a drill. Pieces of dust and paint are swept away from the cloth, the surface is polished so that there are no scratches, bumps or roughness. The surface is inspected from both sides, the density of the joints is analyzed, the frame can be strengthened with fasteners and metal corners.

Puttying and sanding

The existing cracks and grooves are sealed with a new putty. For alkyd paint, a composition of any color is suitable, and before applying oil impregnation, varnish or wax, the tone of the putty must match the panel. The dried areas of the door are polished with fine-grained sandpaper. At this stage, any defects are eliminated.

Rice. 6. Putty door

Antiseptic coating

When applying paint, the surface is pre-treated with flame retardant and antiseptic impregnation (for example, biotex) when the door is installed in the steam room. It is advisable to choose the means of one company, which will improve the interaction and quality of coverage.

Rice. 7. Antiseptic for wood

After that, the door must be primed, and then apply a layer of putty. It is necessary to process all areas of the door, as well as gaps in decorative details, between the jamb and the lintel. After the putty dries, the surface is puttied again.

Coloring technology

If a new canvas is being painted, then it should be protected from swelling. Pre-lay it on a flat surface, process it with sandpaper or a grinder. Then the cloth is primed, recesses and flat areas are processed. After drying, the surface is re-treated.

Rice. 8. Directions for painting the canvas

The old door of the house needs to be painted with high quality so that there are no stains and smudges on its surface. It is unlikely that you need to buy a spray gun for painting one or two canvases, so you can use a paneled brush or roller.

After you have chosen how to paint a wooden door, you should familiarize yourself with some of the nuances of the work:

  • fluff the brush, removing poorly fixed hairs;
  • you need to paint the panel door correctly in 3 stages, using a roller, from the upper left corner you need to move to the right, covering the entire canvas. After drying, the door must be processed in the longitudinal direction. Then you need to paint the canvas from the upper right corner;
  • when processing a paneled canvas, you need to use a brush, handle the surface carefully, avoiding excess coating.

Rice. 9. Web processing sequence

Painting with alkyd enamel

To cover the doors with alkyd enamel, the following steps should be followed:

  • remove the panel from the hinges so that paint streaks do not appear on the surface. Then, with a spatula and sandpaper, you need to remove scuffs and the old layer, rinse the surface thoroughly and inspect for defects. Chips and cracks are puttied, the surface is dried and sanded with sandpaper. At the last stage, priming is carried out;
  • the finished canvas lies on a horizontal surface of the floor, table or workbench, covered with polyethylene. Existing glass is sealed with adhesive tape. At the paneled door, the panels are first painted with a brush, and then the protrusions. In the future, the entire panel is stained with a roller. With a two-layer application of alkyd enamel, the consumption will be 40-80 g / m2;
  • in addition, you can tint the canvas under wenge, soaking it with a special compound. The basis of this paint includes natural oils. After a layer of paint has been applied, it must be carried out with a rubber spatula or sponge about 10 times;
  • you can take liquid soap with paint. First, the cloth is covered with paint and liquid soap. The soap needs another layer of coating.

Rice. 10. Alkyd enamel for wood surface treatment

Stain processing

When choosing a stain, a primer is not applied. The agent penetrates into the deep layers of pine or oak wood, coloring its fibers and increasing the protective performance. There are several ways to apply the composition: rubbing, spraying, simple application and staining with a brush. Usually a simple application is used..

Rice. 11. Processing the canvas with stain

Since the stain will lie better on a damp canvas, it needs to be slightly moistened. First, the coloring is carried out along the fibers, and then across them. The next layer is carried out in the direction of the fibers. From below we process a panel with jambs so as not to disturb the design of the structure.

After the water-based stain has been applied, the surface should be sanded with a zero-grain sandpaper (due to raised fibers), remove dust and apply the next coat of coating. If an alcohol stain is used, the fibers do not rise and no sanding is required. But water formulations do not have an unpleasant odor and toxicity.

Oil or wax impregnations

There are nuances in processing the canvas with oil impregnation. First, the composition of Pinotex is well mixed. If applied incorrectly, dark areas and stripes may appear. For work, a brush, sprayer, roller or sponge made of foam rubber is used. Depending on the porosity of the material, the number of layers will be calculated.

Rice. 12. Wax application

First, they collect a little composition, distributing it evenly over the width of the panel. Then the impregnation is rolled out with a roller or rubbed with a brush without sagging. Drying time is 8-12 hours. No later than a day later, another layer is applied.

wood look

To paint interior doors under a tree with your own hands was done correctly, follow the instructions:

  • we apply light paint (beige, white, gray or yellow) to the building material;
  • the dried surface is treated with liquid soap;
  • cover with dark paint, remove liquid soap.

The wood structure can be made on veneered material, processing the fibers with a special brush (the effect of "antique" is obtained). Then one or more paint and varnish coatings must be applied to the surface and sanded.

How to paint laminated doors

Compared to natural wood doors, laminated products are aesthetically pleasing, easy to use and affordable. To process laminated doors, you will need a roller or brush, wood putty with a spatula, sandpaper, rags, solvent and special enamel.

The surface is completely sanded, cleaned with a rag from dust and puttied with a thin layer. After the putties have dried, they are treated with sandpaper, applied a second time and again after drying they are polished. Before painting, the composition is diluted with a solvent. The paint is applied carefully, paying attention to hard-to-reach areas. After 3 layers, the result is fixed with varnish.

Rice. 13. Varnishing wood surface

If there are no defects, you can update the laminated coating. Suitable tinted varnish or stain, which is applied after sanding and tinting.

The choice of the color of the panel is carried out based on the wishes. The main recommendations include:

  • drying the surface before applying alkyd enamel;
  • combination of the shade of the canvas with furniture;
  • the choice of a solid wood door covered with oil impregnation for a wooden dwelling;
  • a combination of an aged door with antiques;
  • choice of dark tinted door for lacquered furnishings;
  • the use of water-based paints.

In the process of painting the door, you must follow the technique and safety measures.

One way or another, everyone has a need for cosmetic repairs of the apartment. Usually start with wallpapering. And then there is a need to replace the internal interior doors. But this is not at all necessary. Old ones are often made of much better quality, from good wood, and it is only necessary to make some effort to transform them. Any person armed with knowledge of modern paints and varnishes and familiar with painting technology can give an old interior door a new life, fit it into an updated interior.

The easiest way to do this is with brushes, rollers and cans of paint.

Types of paints for painting interior doors

Paints for interior doors are of the following types:

  • acrylic varnishes
  • alkyd enamels
  • acrylic enamels
  • nitro paints

Lucky

If you remove the layers of old paint with solvent and emery, which are probably on the old door, you can see an interesting and beautiful wood pattern. In this case, for painting it is better to choose a varnish for interior work. Colorless or tinted, it accentuate natural patterns wood and give the door a fresh look. Before varnishing, you can use various tinting impregnations based on natural oils, which can help change the color, make the wood more resistant to environmental influences, and the varnish film will further consolidate the effect.

The lacquer coating is almost odorless, dries quickly and is quite safe. The varnish is conveniently applied and does not spread over the surface, however, modern high-quality varnishes are not cheap.

Alkyd enamels

The most common paint for painting interior doors is alkyd enamel. These paints are cheap, have a rich color palette and, once dry, provide a very durable finish. The main disadvantage of using alkyd enamel is strong fumes odor, which does not weather for more than a day. Evaporation of enamel solvents can lead to allergies and even poisoning, therefore, to use this paint, it is necessary either to ensure the absence of tenants in the apartment, or to work outdoors.

Acrylic enamels

In the case when these conditions are not feasible, you can use acrylic enamel to paint interior doors. These paints are practically odorless, but the resulting coating is not very resistant. Acrylic enamels create a matte finish, so most often acrylic varnish is applied over the enamel, thanks to which the surface acquires shine and extra durability of the coating. The wide color palette of these paints allows them to be used to find various design solutions.

Nitro paints

When painting interior wooden doors, nitro-paint or nitro-lacquer are considered the best materials in terms of coating durability. However, protective equipment, such as a respirator, is necessary to use them, as the paint is highly toxic and can cause an allergic reaction. For its use, the absence of people or work in the fresh air is necessary. Besides, road nitro paint. But the quality of the cover justifies the price.

For cosmetic repairs of interior doors with your own hands, in addition to the selected paint, you need:

  • spatulas,
  • paint brushes and rollers,
  • sandpaper,
  • putty,
  • masking tape,
  • primer,
  • solvent,
  • construction dryer.

To prepare the door for painting, it is necessary to remove a layer of old paint. The easiest and most effective way to do this is with a building hair dryer, but if it is not available, you can get by with a spatula and sandpaper. Some paints, such as vinyl and nitrocellulose, can be easily removed with chemical solvents. Modern products of this type are in the form of gels, powders and liquids. They are applied to the surface to be cleaned and kept for some time, which is indicated on the packaging of the solvent.

After removing the old coating, the door must be washed and, with the help of putty, cracks and chips, if any, should be eliminated. After the putty has dried, the surface must be carefully sanded with a fine sandpaper and washed again.

You can paint only after complete drying. To improve the quality of the coating, the door must be removed from the hinges - so you can avoid bumps and streaks when applying paint.

Before starting work, fittings that cannot be removed are pasted over with masking tape. It will also help keep the glass inserts clean and allow, if necessary, to carefully paint the door in several colors.

Before painting, a wooden interior door is better primer, which will improve the adhesion of paint to wood and reduce its consumption. The primer is selected for each type of paint individually.

When choosing a primer and paint, it is also necessary to take into account which areas of the apartment the door separates. If you have to paint the door to the bathroom, then you should choose varnishes and paints marked "waterproof" and with an antifungal effect.

Suppose you have solid doors, but they clearly show that the canvas is no longer new, or vice versa, you have purchased a new, unfinished, wooden canvas and want to give it a luxurious look. In both cases, painting the doors will save the situation and further, we will tell you in detail how to paint the door with your own hands in the two options mentioned above, plus we will analyze what paint to paint the doors in a given situation.

In order to paint the door with your own hands, you do not need high qualifications.

In this case, door paint is not the only option; you can just as well cover the door with a good varnish or wax. The technique for applying these compounds is almost the same, while the visual effect may differ dramatically.

Varnish or paint

The use of door varnish is fully justified when the canvas is new. Old canvases can also be varnished, but they should not have large (visible) traces of putty or stains that are not characteristic of wood. Plus, preparing old doors for applying varnish is much more difficult, we will dwell on this issue in more detail a little later.

As for gloss, there are matte, semi-gloss and glossy varnishes. By color, these compositions are divided into colored and transparent, and the color group is also partly transparent, it just has a peculiar shade. In addition, no one bothers you to varnish a pre-painted door, this option is possible, only the compositions must be compatible with each other.

There is an important nuance here - if you do not have a good airbrush at home, then we do not recommend you to take on the application of glossy varnish with your own hands, in artisanal conditions it is often not realistic to achieve high-quality gloss.

Door paint is practically a win-win option, especially if you are far from painting tricks. Here you can choose the color, what paint to paint the doors, which means that it is possible to adapt to a certain type of design. It takes the same amount of time to dry the paint as it does for varnish, in this case it all depends on the type of composition.

Modern paints are good for painting any, especially old, do-it-yourself doors.

If varnish, what kind?

The choice here is quite wide, it all depends on the ambitions of the owner, the location of the doors and the size of the budget.

  • The most affordable option in terms of cost are oil varnishes. Such compositions are made on the basis of drying oil with the addition of a film-forming hardener. Varnishes are quite stable and harmless from an environmental point of view, but they can dry up to 3 days;

The main advantage of oil varnishes is the low price.

  • The next contender in the budget niche is alkyd varnish. The basis is alkyd resins mixed with an organic solvent. In terms of performance, alkyd formulations are better than oil formulations, but they also dry for a long time, plus the organic solvent “smells hard”;

Alkyd varnishes are more suitable for interior work.

  • We do not recommend nitro-varnishes for home doors, of all the advantages there is only a short drying period (up to 2 hours) and a luxurious shine. But doors under nitro-lacquer will not shine for long, because such compounds are not resistant to ultraviolet radiation and mechanical damage. And most importantly, nitrolacs during drying are very toxic and “stink wildly”;

Nitrolac is considered the fastest drying.

  • Urethane-alkyd or as they are also called "Yacht" varnishes are an excellent choice if required. front door painting. They do not fade in the sun, are indifferent to humidity and are resistant to mechanical damage, but the price is high;

Yacht varnish is considered universal.

  • A good alternative to yacht varnish is a polyurethane composition. If we take into account that neither the entrance, nor even the interior doors will be constantly “poured” with sea water, then polyurethane varnish is close to ideal, especially for entrance doors. Plus, it costs much cheaper than a yacht;

Polyurethane varnish is one of the most durable.

  • At the moment, acrylic varnishes are almost an ideal option for both interior and exterior doors. These compositions are water-dispersed, in other words, water acts as a solvent, so they do not smell when dried. Acrylic compositions cannot be called cheap, but there are absolutely no environmental complaints about them, plus they allow air to pass through.

Acrylic compounds are considered absolutely harmless.

Choosing a paint

The range of paints that are suitable for doors is a little poorer, but in general the list and performance are similar.

Oil paint for full coloring of doors is practically not used now. True, if we are talking about old doors in the utility room that need repainting, repainting the old canvas with oil paint will be an acceptable solution. Firstly, before the doors were mainly painted with oil paint, which means that there will be no problem of rejection of the compositions. Secondly, such an “update” will cost a penny.

Alkyd wood enamel is a great low-budget choice. It is suitable for both entrance and interior doors, and feels equally good in wet and dry rooms. There are only 2 problems here - the smell and a long drying period from 1 to 3 days.

Alkyd enamel is considered one of the most acceptable options for painting doors.

If there are small children in the apartment and they cannot be taken out for a few days while the renovation is underway, then the best solution would be an acrylic coating. The fact is that acrylic paint for wood fits perfectly. In residential areas, it looks luxurious, does not burn, is harmless and dries in about a day.

If you plan to paint your door first, and then varnish the canvas, then keep in mind that the paint base and the varnish base should be the same. For example, for acrylic paint, you need to take acrylic varnish, etc. Otherwise, there is a high probability of rejection, the doors will simply peel off.

Acrylic paint for doors is the best.

Is it possible to use impregnation

In the wake of the passion for everything natural, some owners try to completely abandon synthetic dyes and treat wood with oil and wax impregnations. The option is good, but if you make a completely natural impregnation of beeswax and linseed oil, then it will be very expensive.

  • Linseed oil - 40%;
  • Turpentine - 30%;
  • Beeswax - 30%;
  • Rosin - 5% of the total mass.

For doors, you can make the composition cheaper, it contains 55% of ordinary paraffin and 40% of gasoline, plus the same 5% of rosin. And for those who do not want to bother with the independent production of impregnation for doors, ready-made compositions are sold, but the level of naturalness of these compositions depends on the decency of the manufacturer, because there are no GOSTs for such goods.

Not all wax impregnations for wood are made from natural ingredients.

door painting technology

Do-it-yourself painting of new and old doors is approximately the same, but there are still slight differences, so we will consider these 2 options separately. Let's start with the tool first.

Tool

To properly paint a wooden door, one brush and desire is not enough, you need at least a minimal set of high-quality tools.

  • Brushes - wide for large sectors of the canvas and narrow for hard-to-reach places;
  • Roller - it is not advisable to take foam rubber, it leaves small bubbles on the canvas, it is better to take a roller with a pile of 5 mm;
  • A grinder is ideal, if it is not there, then you will have to be content with a block with emery stretched over it;
  • Spatulas - rubber and metal;
  • Screwdriver or screwdriver set.

The final result largely depends on the quality of the tool.

Painting an old canvas

How to paint an old door doesn’t depend on the type of painter, it doesn’t matter what kind of paint you took, the main thing is not to make mistakes in the preparation and painting itself.

Before you paint the old doors, they need to be properly prepared, but for starters, it is highly advisable to remove the canvas from the hinges and lay it on the goats or on the table. The point here is not so much in the convenience of work, but in the fact that there will be no streaks in a horizontal position when painting.

First, the doors must be removed and laid horizontally.

The next number is the dismantling of all fittings, that is, handles, awnings, lock plates and so on. If something cannot be removed or simply reluctance to remove, then this part must be sealed with masking tape or wrapped in foil.

Before painting, it is desirable to dismantle the fittings.

  • The safest way to clean is to use a grinder. Of course, you can try to clean off the old paint with sandpaper by hand, but few people can do such a labor feat;
  • If you heat up the old paint with a building hair dryer, then it can be easily and efficiently removed with a steel spatula, although this method requires a building hair dryer;

Using a building hair dryer gives one of the best results.

  • There is an option to clean off the paint with a steel scraper, but after that you will have to sand the canvas well, because there will be a lot of scratches;
  • Paint removers are sold on the market, you apply the composition to the canvas and after a while you clean everything off with a spatula. The option is acceptable, but such washes are very harmful, plus they are toxic and smell strongly, so the feasibility of using them for home doors is a big question.

Some craftsmen advise using drill bits with metal cord brushes to remove paint. Indeed, such a method exists, but it is used for artificial aging of wood. The cord brush selects soft fibers from the array, and only veins remain on top. If this decor suits you, you can try, but your doors will definitely not look newer.

The processing of the array with a cord-brush is used only for artificial aging of wood.

When the paint is removed, take the putty on the wood in the color of the array and close up all the small cracks with a rubber spatula, after which you grind it again with fine emery.

You can bleach old wood with chlorine bleach, 3 parts water for 1 part whiteness.

Chlorine bleach (whiteness) can be used to bleach wood.

If the door is paneled (prefabricated canvas), then first paint over the recesses and curly parts with a small brush, and then with a roller or a wide brush you need to “walk” over all planes. Only the brush must be combed out before use so that all the hairs that do not hold well fall out.

Good painting with a roller is better to work on planes.

Important: after the first staining, the pile rises on the tree, visually it is almost imperceptible, and the plane becomes rough to the touch. The pile is removed with a couple of strokes of thin emery, but this must be done.

The doors are painted 2 - 3 times, each next time is applied only after the previous one has dried, and in order for the composition to lay down evenly, the direction of movement of the brush must be alternated, that is, the first time we paint along the canvas, the second across and the third again along.

Painting new doors

If the door is not painted, then the stage of removing the old paint is eliminated. But in any case, it is necessary to grind the doors before finishing, believe me, there are enough chips and burrs.

Most often, new wooden doors are varnished, because it is simply a pity to hide such beauty behind a layer of colored paint. Before processing, pine doors should be wiped well with acetone, so you will remove the resin from the canvas. If the color of the wood suits you, then you can start applying the first layer of varnish.

For those who want to emphasize the texture of wood and change the shade, there are stains. You only need to choose a shade and apply stain with a brush on the canvas. After the canvas dries, you can start applying wax or varnish.

Stain gives the wood a brighter look.

When waxing, 2 layers are enough, and after a couple of days, when the composition is absorbed, you will need to polish the canvas with felt manually. The varnish can be applied up to 7 layers, here, the more layers, the better the door will look, but there should be at least 3 such layers. And do not forget to remove the pile with emery after the stain or the first layer of the composition.

Conclusion

It is realistic to varnish or paint doors with your own hands, but you should take into account all those small nuances that were described above. In the video in this article, experienced craftsmen give their recommendations, do not hesitate, you will definitely succeed.

If desired, the old door can be completely reanimated.

It is quite possible to save the budget on buying a new door and refresh the interior of the room. To do this, it is enough to update the old door structure, adhering to the technology of preparing and painting the canvas.

Everything about the choice of paint, the features of painting different types of doors and the stages of painting work, is written in the article.

Distinctive features of painting different types of doors

Old interior and exterior doors often have a high-quality frame and a durable canvas. Various models, even those made of fine wood, lose their original gloss over time. The layer of paint accumulated over the years spoils the appearance of the doors and needs to be reconstructed.

The easiest and most affordable way to update the entrance structure is to cover it with new paint. Any home master will cope with this work, it is enough to know the features of door materials, modern varnishes and paints, as well as follow the painting technology.

The process of painting different types of doors has its own characteristics:

  1. An array of wood. Doors made of this material are smooth heavy structures. This option conveys the natural structure of wood as much as possible. To update the array, you should choose a transparent varnish or translucent glaze. If the canvas is outdated, then wood-like glaze will do.
  2. MDF. The design of such a door consists of sheets of chipboard and insulation. Painting an MDF door is quite simple, but before that, you should carefully prepare the surface.
  3. Paneled canvases. The frame is made of MDF, and the inserts are made of thin boards or plywood sheets. Before painting, the structure will have to be disassembled into its constituent elements. Due to the large number of joints, paneled doors wear out faster and require updating more often.

How to choose materials for painting doors

Quality paints can't be too cheap. In this case, the savings is not justified. Sometimes, shortly before the expiration date, stores reduce the price of paints and varnishes. If painting a wooden door is planned for the coming days, then this option will save money without losing quality.

Optimum door paint

Reflecting on the question: "How to cover the door?" you need to have a general idea of paint and varnish products, their pros and cons. The range of all paints is usually classified into transparent and opaque.

Opaque paints include alkyd and oil coatings. The most commonly used nitro paint, acrylic and alkyd enamel. Each of these colors has its own characteristics.

Alkyd enamel - the most affordable, presented in a wide range of colors and shades. After drying, a durable, resistant to external factors coating is formed. The material is wear-resistant, economical in consumption and dries relatively quickly.

A significant drawback of alkyd paint is an unpleasant odor that lingers in the room for about two days after painting. Vapors adversely affect the health of allergy sufferers and people with respiratory diseases. Alkyd enamels are not desirable for use in children's rooms.

Nitro paint has high aesthetic properties, the color palette of materials surpasses acrylic / alkyd enamels. Significant advantages include high wear resistance and strength. However, nitro paint is even more harmful to health than alkyd enamel. Paint fumes are very toxic, painting work is carried out only in well-ventilated areas in compliance with safety regulations. Until the paint is completely dry, do not enter the room.

Water-based acrylic enamels are best suited for painting interior doors. The composition is easy to apply, fits well, and when dried, there is no unpleasant toxic odor.

Cons of acrylic paint: higher price and low strength. To increase the wear resistance of the coating and maintain an aesthetic appearance from above, the paint is coated with a special acrylic varnish.

Lacquer for wooden doors is more often used for solid wood structures. Varnishing, like painting with paint, protects doors from moisture, bright light and other external influences. There are transparent and tinted varnishes. Some materials are used in conjunction with paints. The choice of one or another varnish depends on the result that you want to get.

Tinted varnish gives the door a certain shade. Transparent conveys the color of natural wood tone on tone.

Advice. When buying varnish, you should pay attention to the drying speed. It is better to choose a quick-drying coating - such a varnish does not spread over the surface and is harmless to health.

How to paint a fiberboard door: step by step instructions

Fiberboard is a very porous material, so it must be primed before painting. This will reduce paint consumption and increase the wear resistance of the coating. As a primer, ordinary drying oil is suitable, which must first be heated to a temperature of + 40 ° - + 50 ° С.

The sequence of painting the fiberboard door:

  1. Remove the door from its hinges, lay it horizontally, clean it of debris and dust. Wipe the surface with a cloth soaked in alcohol.
  2. Apply several coats of primer. Careful impregnation will significantly increase the strength and water resistance of fiberboard. Drying oil can be replaced with a primer mixture with fungicides / insecticides. Such compositions are devoid of an unpleasant odor and it is enough to apply them in one layer.
  3. Putty visible cracks and leave the door to dry completely.
  4. Sand the surface with sandpaper.
  5. Alkyd, oil, acrylic or water-dispersion paints are suitable for coloring. When choosing a composition, it is necessary to take into account the type of fiberboard. For example, water-resistant fiberboard will repel water-based paints.
