Today, people quite often make furniture with their own hands. If there are two children in the family, then in order to save space in the children's room, you can make or purchase a children's bunk bed.

A bunk bed for children can be designed in the form of a pirate ship. To do this, you can add elements such as a strong rope, slide and steering wheel.

DIY bunk bed: manufacturing technology

If you plan to purchase a high-quality bunk bed for children, then you should know that it is quite expensive. Budget designs are not always of high quality. The two-story structure must be able to support both children and parents. The stability of the product is also important.

In some cases, three-tier beds are also made, but builders do not recommend doing this.

Necessary materials

A bunk bed, decorated in the same style as other furniture elements, perfectly complements the interior.

To independently make a crib for children, which will have two floors, you need the following tools:

  1. Pliers.
  2. A hammer.
  3. Screwdriver.
  4. Electric drill or screwdriver.
  5. Building level.
  6. Roulette.
  7. Square.
  8. Hacksaw.
  9. Clamps.
  10. Electric jigsaw.

In order for the bed to fit perfectly into the interior of the children's room, you will need to think in advance about where it is best to place it. You will need to take into account the size of the beds, so that it is possible to understand how much material will need to be purchased. For work you will need the following materials:

  1. Wooden bars 2.5 m long - 4 pcs.
  2. Bars made of wood 3 m long - 4 pcs.
  3. Three-meter boards - 4 pcs.
  4. 2 plywood sheets, chipboard or slats 12 mm thick.
  5. Screws 75 mm long.
  6. Screws with a diameter of 6 mm, which have a hexagonal head - 8 pcs.
  7. Bolts with a diameter of 6 mm and a length of 75 mm - 10 pcs.
  8. Nuts and washers.
  9. Putty, which is intended for working with wood.
  10. Self-tapping screws.
  11. Bolts 150 mm long - 2 pcs.
  12. Polyurethane.
  13. sanding paper.

Wood can be replaced with laminated chipboard. If you still plan to use boards, then before doing all the work, they will need to be kept in the room for about 1 week so that the temperature and humidity are approximately the same as in the room where the structure will be made. This will need to be done so that the material does not warp.

Do-it-yourself assembly of the crib must be done carefully, because the design will be an important component of the children's room.

Work order

The bunk bed, decorated in a classic style, is in good harmony with the interior.

The manufacturing process is as follows:

  1. First of all, you will need to determine on the supporting structure of the bed the location of the fixing points of the wooden boxes that are intended for mattresses.
  2. It is necessary to make a hole on both sides of the longitudinal bars for each of the screws.
  3. Next, the lower longitudinal beam is pressed against the first wall, after which it is fastened with a screw. Do the same with the second wall.
  4. In the same way, the upper longitudinal bars are installed, which are intended for mattresses. At this stage, the supporting structure of the baby bed will be made.
  5. It is necessary to fix the cross bars under the children's bed. This should be done with both the lower and the upper tier. They must be firmly fixed with screws to the bars at a distance of 30 cm from each other.
  6. Next, the frame of the box is sheathed with boards in the side part. For sheathing it is recommended to use screws with invisible heads.
  7. Next, the sides-shields are attached, which can prevent the accidental fall of children who will sleep.
  8. The stairs to the upper tier are rigidly fixed with screws.

Nuances to take into account

Scheme of a bunk bed with a built-in table and shelves.

Be sure to be sure of what dimensions should have a place to sleep and on which side it is best to install a vertical ladder. The size of the baby bed should be approximately 8 cm longer than the sleeping area and 10 cm wide. The ladder will increase the size of the bed by approximately 4.5 cm.

In order to determine the appropriate height of the bed, it is necessary to take into account the height of the ceiling in the room. The distance between the lower and upper floors should also be taken into account. You will need to leave such an amount of space that it is possible for the mother to sit down with the child if necessary.

For stairs and racks, you need bars and a board made of solid wood. The panels at the ends are the same for the entire structure, this moment will simplify their preparation. The side panels are the same width as the end panels. If you connect them differently to each other, then you can make an original design.

Based on the size of the mattresses that you need to put on the bed, then you need to increase the size of the structure by 2 cm on each side. This is necessary so that it is possible to easily fill the linen for the bed. The most important guideline in this work is the convenience of the bed, which is made.

The lower position of the first tier can be determined if we take the height that the child can easily overcome as the basis for calculations. In most cases, the height is 35 cm for a child under the age of 3 years. The frame for placing the mattress should be lower by its thickness. For the second tier, the upper position must be set so that an adult child who sleeps upstairs can sit down on the first floor at any time without touching the upper floor with his head.

How to make a strong frame?

bunk bed drawing

A children's bunk bed should be reliable, while the aesthetic side is secondary. The bars must be firmly connected with screws. The result is 2 frames that are almost the same size. Aesthetically, they are able to complement each other well.

To one of the sides and the end, you will need to fix the board with screws, the importance of this fastener should be taken into account. Self-tapping screws are recommended to be screwed in from the inside, you will need to make sure that they do not pass through the board. For screws of small length, large holes can be drilled. To do this, it is recommended to use a depth gauge on an electric drill.

The side is installed on another frame. Holes for fasteners are recommended to be hidden with putty. After it dries, the putty should be treated with sanding paper. The length of the leg must match the height of the fence. Make sure that the leg can withstand the load that will fall on it.

In the leg, you will need to make a hole at the attachment point of the upper tier. The same hole is made in the frame with the board. In the leg, it will be necessary to make recesses that will help to easily hide the hex screw head and washer. The hole must be made of such a depth that the screw, having passed through the side and the leg, can be securely fixed in the bar.

A children's bunk bed has one advantage: a small box can be placed under the first tier, in which you can store a bed or a small amount of necessary things. For example, a child can place his toys in such a box. The front panel of the drawer should not be made as long as that of the crib. The height should match the ground floor panel, which can complement the design of the children's room.

Bed installation technology

The lower tier of the bed can be equipped for a child to play by equipping the structure with additional elements.

The base of a bunk crib should be made of wood. The high-quality preparation of this material requires some effort: you will need to level it with a planer, sand it with sandpaper, and at the end you will need to varnish the product so that it can extend its service life.

If the walls are made of drywall, then determining the location of the racks is quite simple. It is very important to make holes in the right places. For this purpose, it is recommended to find an assistant who can support the frame at the bottom, pressing it firmly against the wall.

Guide holes will need to be made by drilling the rack profile, drywall sheet and frame bar. It is necessary to prepare places for screwing in screws that have hex heads. For this operation, a large drill should be used. The screws will need to be screwed in so that they connect all the elements and are fixed in the racks. In the same way, you need to install the first tier, that is, a frame with a side.

Particular attention must be paid to the installation of the fence, because it can create some guarantees for the safety of children. The fence can be made of strong boards, which will be fixed on racks placed in a vertical position. In this case, the screws are screwed in from the inside. It should be borne in mind that there should be a hole in the fence for the stairs that lead to the upper tier.

A vertical staircase is made quite simply, it will take up less space when compared with a staircase that is located at an angle. First of all, two beams are fixed, which can guide the movement of children in the process of ascent or descent. The steps must be securely fixed with bolts that are 6 mm long. Long bolts are used to secure the top step and at the same time fix the ladder to the bed.

Bunk bed for children made of laminated chipboard

The top tier can be fixed on the wall. The lower bed can be equipped with wheels.

If laminated chipboard is used for the production of a bunk bed for children, then it will not be necessary to level, sand and varnish the material. Instead, you only need to process and glue the edge along the edges of the chipboard. Thanks to the use of such chipboard, you can make a beautiful bed with your own hands in a short period of time. You should know that laminated chipboard has good strength and wear resistance.

It is necessary to cut laminated chipboard on the street. This material has its own specifics, and therefore it will be necessary to make some changes in the construction technology. A bunk bed for children made of laminated chipboard will have much more weight compared to a wooden structure, making the bed more stable.

Bunk beds can be placed next to each other. This saves a lot of space in the room.

In the case of using chipboard, the following tools should be purchased:

  1. Portable manual circular plate.
  2. Iron, which is needed in order to stick the safety edge.
  3. Screwdriver.
  4. Bits and drills for a screwdriver.
  5. Protective gloves or mittens.
  6. Ruler.
  7. Simple pencil.
  8. Roulette.

In order to be able to make a good quality bunk bed with your own hands, it is necessary to use not only chipboard from the materials, but also the edge, glue, and sanding paper. You will also need to purchase a tree that is used for the stairs leading to the second floor.

Bed making steps:

  1. Project creation.
  2. Edge bonding to chipboard.
  3. Cutting material.
  4. Connection of all elements with each other using self-tapping screws.

Do-it-yourself bunk can solve many problems in a cramped room. Any bed “eats up” a significant area in the bedroom, and if there are several children in the family, then a compact multi-bed bed is a must.

Of course, furniture can be purchased by choosing the appropriate option from a wide range, but it will be expensive. Yes, and to choose the optimal size is not so simple. With a little carpentry skills, the bed can be made independently, and with the right approach to work, it will fit perfectly into the interior of the children's room.

Wood is rightly considered an ideal material for making furniture, and even more so for children's beds. It has a natural, ecological purity and is absolutely harmless to the child's body. At the same time, wood is easily processed and has sufficient strength, providing an attractive appearance.

In principle, almost any wood can be used, but certain specific properties should still be taken into account:

The choice of wood species depends entirely on the decision of the home master, and is made taking into account the style of interior design.

Advice: conifers are most often used, as they attract attention at an affordable price, as well as the presence of antiseptic ability due to the content of natural phytoncides.

Drawing

Work on the creation of a bunk structure begins with the choice or independent development of bed drawings. There are such popular models:

The most widespread is the traditional design. A simple, typical design is made up of the following elements:

  1. Bed(2 pieces) from solid wood or chipboard with a thickness of at least 18 mm.
  2. Frame for bed installation. It is made of board and timber. If necessary, cross-beams are mounted to strengthen the bed.
  3. legs(4 pieces) from a wooden bar.
  4. Borders. On the back side, they can be made in the form of backs, and on the side - in the form of decorative sidewalls.
  5. Stairs for climbing to the upper tier.

Any person can assemble a typical bed. For its manufacture and assembly, it will be necessary to develop separate drawings of all parts (detailing) and an assembly drawing. Particular attention is paid to the connection of elements.

Reference: the standard size of a bed for a child is 120x60 cm.

Tools

To make a bed with your own hands, you should take care of this in advance. instrument:

Reference: for measurements and quality control, you will need a tape measure, a metal ruler, a caliper, a square, a plumb line, a building level.

How to make a bed for children?

The production of various elements and the assembly of a simple, traditional bed is carried out in the following order:

An obligatory element of a bunk bed is a ladder.. Most often, it is performed vertically from the front of the bed. You can also mount it on the side, and in this case, an inclined installation is possible. The design of the stairs is simple. Between two vertical bars, 4-6 steps are fixed. It is recommended to attach the lower step in addition to the frame of the lower tier. Connection of steps with racks can be made using metal corners or by inserting into a groove. You can also use an external mount.

Important: steps must be strong and withstand (with a margin) the weight of an adult.

Finishing

The tree has an attractive appearance, but it appears only after finishing.

After completing the assembly of the bed, first of all, it is necessary to putty all the gaps, joints and cracks. For this, putty for wood is used. Next, the wooden parts are polished to form a perfectly smooth surface.

The decorativeness of wood is well emphasized by varnish. Depending on the interior design of the room, a colorless or tinted varnish can be used. If it is necessary to obtain dark tones, the wood is treated with stain or special impregnating materials before varnishing.

With the help of varnish, you can provide a matte or glossy surface. Modern varnishes are able to provide various color shades, as well as imitate the colors of precious woods. In the manufacture of a children's bed, it is better to use acrylic or nitrocellulose varnish.

Finishing can also be done by painting. Polyurethane enamels are popular. With their help, you can get a coating of rich blue, green, pink, white, beige. It should be noted that when staining, the natural wood structure is lost.

If there are two children in the family, but not so many square meters, then a bunk bed will be an excellent option for organizing sleeping places for the children. Such a bed makes it possible to economically use the interior space of the room. For children, this type of furniture (PICTURE 1) will bring only joy. In most cases, bunk beds are delivered to the house unassembled.

To avoid additional costs, you can try to implement it yourself. This article provides instructions for assembling the structure. The bed kit includes the necessary parts for assembling the bed. If you have basic furniture assembly skills, then detailed assembly instructions will help you save money on your own.

An essential condition is that children's furniture must be absolutely safe.

For this reason, the assembly process must be approached with all seriousness. The bed should be strong and carefully assembled. You need to start the assembly process by marking the places on the main supporting walls of the crib, where wooden bases or boxes that are designed for mattresses will be fixed.

The instructions for assembling the bed provide for the following materials and tools:

  • boards;
  • timber;
  • plywood;
  • screws;
  • euro screws;
  • hacksaw;
  • drill;
  • chisel;
  • a hammer;
  • screwdriver;
  • jigsaw;
  • roulette;

Bed assembly

Be sure to measure mattresses, under the size of which plywood substrates are cut. A margin of 2 cm should be provided so that it is convenient to cover the mattresses with sheets. After marking, you can proceed directly to the implementation of installation work.

First, 2 side frames are made. For this, a beam with a section of 5 * 10 cm is used, which is fastened with screws. A board (15 * 2 cm) is screwed to one of the frames. Moreover, the joints must be both strong and neat. Self-tapping screws should not pierce through wooden elements, protruding with pointed ends outward.

The second frame is similarly equipped with a side. It is made from a board with a cross section of 20 * 2 cm. For the legs of a bunk bed, a beam of 5 * 10 cm is used. Their length should correspond to the size of the second tier of the structure.

In the vertical bars located on the legs, holes are made for the screws. Screwing is carried out:

  • at the location of both tiers of the structure;
  • in side frames.

In the legs, small indentations are created with a drill. Washers and heads of 6 faces should sit in them. Screws are screwed into all holes. The recesses with their heads are sealed with putty.

The instructions for assembling the bed provide for the correct location of the structure in relation to the wall. If the wall is ordinary, then it is better to use a laser level to level the bed. With plasterboard walls, holes are drilled into vertical profiles.

It is necessary to install transverse slats under the mattresses. This ensures the creation of a reliable and comfortable bottom of the mattress. It is especially important to do this qualitatively on the upper tier so that the mattress does not fall on the child lying below. We carry out this operation by attaching the transverse mattress slats to the longitudinal bars. The screw fastening step is 25-30 cm.

Is there not enough room for separate cots in the children's room? Assemble a children's wooden bunk bed with your own hands. We have prepared design options for you, accompanied them with diagrams and drawings, we will show the algorithm for making such a bed with our own hands, illustrating with photo and video materials.

A bunk bed for children or teenagers can also be made of metal, but not everyone will get a neat welded structure, and the appearance of such beds is not too childish. Therefore, we will consider the manufacture of beds from wood and lumber, as these are inexpensive and easy-to-work materials, warm, beautiful and homely.

Bed frame materials

The list of wood materials from which a bed can be made is quite long. Let's highlight the most common ones.

1. Array. Expensive material and quite difficult to prepare and manufacture if you have no experience with it. Experience is important here. Although solid wood products turn out to be the most beautiful and durable, they still do not use a children's bed for a very long time - children grow up and begin to need other sleeping places.

2. Lumber - edged or planed board, timber - the most common and easy-to-work materials, provided that you are sure of proper drying, otherwise the supporting structure may "lead".

3. MDF - fibreboard. The formaldehyde emission of the material is at the same level as that of ordinary wood. When drilling dusty, without forming chips. Laminated MDF looks very attractive. An uncoated slab requires additional finishing, such as varnishing. You can order individual elements of the bed in a furniture workshop or a sawing workshop: everything is carefully cut out there, the edges are glued.

4. Chipboard - chipboard. Formaldehyde emission increased without sealed coating, class E1 board excluded. Easy to saw, but does not hold screws well. Suitable for unloaded parts such as drawers mounted under the bottom of the bed. Backs, decorative panels can be made from laminated board (LDSP) - the film coating does not allow formaldehyde to evaporate, but it is important that the ends of the plates are also covered with a film.

5. Furniture board - a plate glued from individual blocks of natural wood. It is beautiful, durable, even allows you to carve, but it requires skill in work, as it has internal stresses that must be taken into account.

When buying accessories, preference should be given to steel hardware. Aluminum is much less durable and rigid.

Methods for connecting wooden knots

When making a bed, you may need various connections horizontally, vertically, and the formation of corners. This can be done in various ways. We present some of them for reference.

1 - half-tree connection; 2 - connection "in the paw"

1 - complete felling; 2 - cutting is not complete; 3 - steel corner

1 - connection on rectangular dowels; 2 - connection on the keys "dovetail"; 3 - connection in the root spike

Design options (drawings and decor)

Bunk beds can be of various designs and be decorated in various ways. So, the upper tier can be exactly above the lower one, be offset, leaving room for the locker, or be perpendicular to it. Stairs may consist of drawers. Another option is steps, which are hinged drawer lids. The bed frame can also be supplemented with drawers located under the bottom mattress. To do this, you will need guides - skids. Sometimes something else is added to the bed: a table, shelves, a pencil case or sports equipment.

Below are drawings of some beds with basic dimensions.

And now for some design ideas that can inspire the creation of an original bunk bed. Pay attention to how absolutely “junk” materials are used in some models - croaker, branches, trunks, snags.

How to make a bunk bed

One of the most inexpensive materials is pine board and timber. It is from them that we will make a bunk bed.

Material calculation

When making a bed, you need to keep in mind that not only a child can sit on the lower bed, so the distance to the bottom of the upper bed should not be less than 85 cm. The size of the beds in the case of purchased mattresses is determined by their width and length. If you yourself make mattresses from two layers of foam rubber in a dense fabric cover, then the dimensions are taken based on personal preferences.

The figure below shows the individual elements of the bed, and the table shows the purpose, dimensions and number of blanks.

1 - vertical racks (legs); 2 - external pads on the racks; 3 - boards of the supporting frame; 4 - upper and lower slats of the headboard; 5 - central plank of the headboard; 6 - side railings; 7 - stair railing; 8 - steps of the stairs

Qty Size, mm Name
4 38x76x1730 Vertical racks
4 38x76x1730 Blanks for external overlays on vertical racks
4 38x140x2030 Bed frame boards
4 32x44x1850 Longitudinal mattress support bars (not shown in the figure)
24 20x76x1000 Mattress support cross rails (not shown), cut in place
8 20x140x914 Top and bottom headboard/footboards
4 20x90x914 Headboard/footboard center slats
1 20x90x1510 stair railing
3 20x64x482 stairs
2 20x90x1800 Fence railing, cut to size at installation

Assembly units

A bed is furniture that consists of several assembly units, which are then assembled into a single unit. Identical parts can be cut by fastening them with a vice or clamp, so they will turn out to be absolutely identical. Before assembly, make sure that all wooden parts are clean, smooth and free from burrs. It is better to work with a special grinder for wood or a grinder.

1. Headboard and footboard

These are two almost mirror-image elements. The difference lies in the embedding of the railing at the footboard, as shown in the pictures below.

Headboard and footboard

Detailed layout with headboard and footboard dimensions

Installation order: 1 - dowel 8 mm; 2 - the stand and the backrest slats are drilled at the same time; 3 - this part is attached after assembling all other parts of the headboard

2. Elements of the supporting frame

To assemble two supporting frames, four prepared boards are required - the longitudinal components of the frame. For the reliability of the structure, the longitudinal bar must be glued to the board and additionally screwed with screws to the middle of the board thickness. Between the bars glued to the longitudinal support bar of the mattress, transverse slats will be laid - the base for the mattress.

The design and dimensions of the supporting frame board

3. Details of stairs and railings

The railing of the fence is just a processed board, the railing of the stairs is a board with a sample for mounting on the frame. The places for fastening the steps must be marked in advance, and make sure that the screws for fixing them do not fall on the screws of the frame.

1 - cutouts 38 mm; 2 - places for fastening the steps; 3 - stairs, 3 pcs.; 4 - fence

4. Assembly of the frame

The footboard and headboard are connected at the bottom to the boards of the supporting frame with screws. After that, the transverse slats, mattress holders are laid, and the extreme ones are sawn in the corners for a tight installation. They do not need to be fixed. The assembly of the second tier is carried out in the same way.

5. Assembly of stairs and railings

The ladder and railing are simply fixed to the frame with screws. If desired, the fence can be made from the side of the wall - for the lower and upper beds. Then you need four more bars.

Now the wood can be painted and varnished, the mattresses can be laid - and the bed is ready!

In conclusion, we suggest watching a video on the manufacture of a bunk crib for real princesses.

In hostels, hostels, mini-hotels and other similar establishments, there is always a need for the maximum number of beds. A good solution when space is limited is a bunk bed with a ladder, which provides full-fledged sleeping places. In stores, such furniture is quite expensive. In this article we will look at how to make a bunk bed with your own hands. There is nothing complicated in its design and anyone who knows how to hold a carpentry tool in their hands can make it.

As with most homemade bunk beds, in this version all fasteners will be hidden and located on the inside of the structure.

The main parts will be made of boards with a section of 50x100 and 50x150 mm. For the manufacture of this bed, you can take any type of wood. We used pine as a quality and inexpensive material - this wood is the best.

Note. Try to use beautiful and high-quality blanks so that the shortcomings, in the future, do not catch your eye.

The photo shows work with professional carpentry tools. But you can make this bed with your own hands using household options for machine tools and hand tools.

bed frame

You need to start with the manufacture of frames. We will not indicate their dimensions, because they depend on the dimensions of the mattresses that you are going to use. Also, the dimensions of the details of the stairs depend on the dimensions of the frames, which will strengthen the frame, stiffen the entire structure and serve as a fence from the side of the foot and head of the bed.

First of all, four long and four short boards for the frame are cut. For the manufacture of frames, boards with a section of 50x150 mm are used, two short ones are cut to the width of the mattress. Longitudinal - along the length of the mattress, plus two thicknesses of short boards, in this case it is 100 mm. With such dimensions, the mattress will easily, but fit tightly into the frame.

We decided that the bed shouldn't look brand new, so don't try too hard when sanding. But if there are factory marks, marks or barcodes on the tree, it is best to remove them so that the boards can be used by either side.

You can remove barcodes and price tags with sandpaper or a grinder, it does not take much time.

It often happens that the thickness of the boards varies in length, and if you have a thickness gauge at your disposal, then use it. Several approaches at the minimum reach of the knife and the thickness will be the same everywhere.

The frame parts are connected with an oblique connection on the inside. This ensures the reliability of fastening and they are invisible. On the frame, you can fasten the boards by screwing in the screws and through the ends, because these connections will be hidden by the legs of the bed.

Note: Pilot holes must be drilled before screwing in to facilitate assembly of the frame.

For the bottom support rails, bars of 50x50 mm are used, we had boards with a section of 50x100, we decided to simply cut them in half and make blanks of the required size. In most cases, slats are used with a thickness of 25 mm, but in order to make the wooden bunk bed stronger, we decided to use thick slats for the bottom.
