Holidays and events of July. Holidays and events of July The appearance of the holiday in Russia

July 8, according to the Orthodox calendar, is celebrated, whose love and marital fidelity have become legendary. They were revered in Rus' as patrons of married life.
Since 2008, July 8 has been declared the All-Russian Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.
Peter and Fevronia are the patrons of family and marriage. Their marriage is a model of Christian marriage.
The blessed Prince Peter was the second son of Murom Prince Yuri Vladimirovich. He ascended the Murom throne in 1203. A few years before this book. Peter fell ill with leprosy, from which no one could cure him. In a sleepy vision, it was revealed to the prince that he could be healed by the daughter of the “tree climber”, a beekeeper who extracted wild honey, Fevronia, a peasant woman from the village of Laskovoy in the Ryazan land. The Virgin Fevronia was wise, wild animals obeyed her, she knew the properties of herbs and knew how to treat ailments, she was a beautiful, pious and kind girl. The prince promised to marry her after healing. St. Fevronia healed the prince, but he did not keep his word. The illness resumed, Fevronia cured him again and married him.
When he inherited the reign after his brother, the boyars did not want to have a princess of simple rank, telling him: “Either let go of your wife, who insults noble ladies with her origin, or leave her as Murom.” The prince took Fevronia, got into a boat with her and sailed along the Oka. They began to live as simple people, rejoicing in being together, and God helped them.
In Murom, unrest began, many began to seek the vacated throne, and murders began. Then the boyars came to their senses, gathered a council and decided to call Prince Peter back. The prince and princess returned, and Fevronia managed to earn the love of the townspeople.
In their advanced years, having taken monastic vows in different monasteries with the names David and Euphrosyne, they prayed to God that they would die on the same day, and bequeathed their bodies to be placed in one coffin, having previously prepared a tomb of one stone, with a thin partition. They died on the same day and hour - June 25 (new style - July 8) 1228.
Considering burial in the same coffin incompatible with the monastic rank, their bodies were placed in different monasteries, but the next day they found themselves together. St. were buried. the spouses in the cathedral church of the city of Murom in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, erected over their relics according to a vow by Ivan the Terrible in 1553, now openly rest in the Church of the Holy Trinity of the Holy Trinity Monastery in Murom.

Memorial Day of Saints Peter and Fevronia.

In the Orthodox calendar, July 8th there is a holiday that should be celebrated as a state holiday - this is. They are the patron saints of family and marriage. And nothing strengthens the state more than a strong, friendly family. The marriage of Peter and Fevronia showed what marriage should be like and many Orthodox, and not only Orthodox people, revere them and follow their path. If we plunge into the history of the formation of this holiday, we will find out that Peter was the second son of Murom Prince Yuri Vladimirovich and was a prince himself. He ascended the Murom throne in 1203. But Prince Peter was ill with incurable leprosy, from which no one could cure him.
In one of his dreams, he was told that the beekeeper’s daughter, Fevronia, a peasant woman from the village of Laskovoy in the Ryazan region, could cure him. Having found her, Prince Peter was truly cured and married Fevronia. But the boyars did not want to have a commoner princess, and then Peter and Fevronia sat down and sailed from Murom and began to live as simple people and God helped them. Having come to their senses from the ensuing turmoil, the boyars called Peter to reign. The prince and princess have returned. At the end of their lives, Peter and Fevronia went to monasteries - female and male, and prayed to die on the same day. And so it happened. They died on the same day and hour - July 8 (June 25, old style) 1228. More than one century has passed, but the memory of them has survived to this day.

Church holiday according to the folk calendar

Peter and Fevronia Day

On this day, Orthodox Christians honor Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom - guardians of marital love and patrons of the family hearth.
According to popular legend, Peter, the future prince of Murom, once fell ill with leprosy, and could not find a cure for it anywhere. He had a dream that the peasant woman Fevronia from Ryazan could help him. When the girl was found on his orders, she demanded that Peter, as payment for treatment, marry her. Peter promised, but after getting rid of the illness, he did not keep his word.
Then his illness resumed again, and after Fevronia again cured Peter, he nevertheless fulfilled his promise and never regretted it.
Peter inherited his reign after his older brother, but the boyars of Murom did not want to see the former peasant woman as their ruler, so they ordered the young prince to abandon his wife or leave the city of Murom.
When Peter and Fevronia sailed along the Oka from Murom, turmoil began in the city - people demanded that the princely couple be returned to the throne. The people's wish was fulfilled.
After this, the couple lived happily ever after and took monastic vows in their old age, praying to God that they could die on the same day. That's how it all happened.
Peter and Fevronia bequeathed to bury them in the same coffin, but people considered their request indecent for people of monastic rank and did not fulfill it. The bodies of the husband and wife were laid in different monasteries, but the next day they miraculously found themselves together.
In 1541, the Christian Church canonized Peter and Fevronia. In Rus', since then it has become customary to ask this pair of saints for a wedding blessing and to pray for well-being in the family. The holiday of Peter and Fevronia in Rus' can to some extent be considered an alternative to St. Valentine's Day.
Some signs of this day were associated with marriage. People believed that if a merchant worked a whole day in a shop with his wife for Peter and Fevronia, this would bring prosperity to his family.
Starting with Peter and Fevronia, the peasants waited another forty hot days.
Fevronia was sometimes remembered separately from Peter; she was called the Rusalnitsa. There was a popular belief that mermaids began to dance in circles from this day. While swimming, the river maiden can drag you to the bottom, so you need to be careful.

A very famous holiday is Valentine's Day. There is probably no person on our planet who has not heard of him. But few people know about the Day of Family, Loyalty, Love, which is celebrated on July 8 (Slavic Valentine's Day). Let's get acquainted with the history of this holiday and its traditions, because it is part of our culture.

Family Day: history of the holiday

Since childhood, we have come across a touching saying in fairy tales: “They lived happily ever after and died on the same day.” It is borrowed from a famous story that children study in primary school. The work, which has become a monument of ancient Russian literature, was written in the 16th century. It was based on oral Murom legends.

The main characters in the story are Peter and Fevronia of Murom - faithful spouses who showed the main spiritual values with their lives. The story of their love passed through several centuries, was not lost among other works and was not forgotten. She marked the beginning of a bright holiday, which recently began to be celebrated in Russia on July 8 (Day of Family, Love and Fidelity).

The Tale of Peter and Fevronia

The main characters who appear to the readers in the story are identified with the Murom prince and his wife. Peter suffered from leprosy. He could not get rid of his tormenting illness. Nobody was able to help him. One day the prince had a dream in which he saw that only Fevronia, a peasant woman, the daughter of a beekeeper, could cure him of a terrible disease.

Having met with a young and kind beauty, the prince spoke about his illness. Fevronia said that she would cure him, but in return he must marry her. The prince agreed to this condition. He was attracted not only by the cure, but also by the girl’s piety, wisdom, and beauty. Fevronia healed Peter, and he kept his promise.

The boyars, having learned about the event, condemned the prince. They demanded that he give up his wife, because she was a commoner. Peter did not take such a step, because it did not matter to him what origin Fevronia had. Together with his wife, he left Murom and abandoned the principality. Such an attitude towards Fevronia, love for her became an eternal example. To pass on such examples of values to new generations, the holiday of July 8 was created in modern times - the Day of Peter and Fevronia, the holiday of Valentine's Day.

Return to the city and continuation of the love story

Murom did not exist for long without Peter and Fevronia. The outbreak of unrest, the ongoing murders and atrocities frightened the boyars. People, concerned about their future fate, asked the prince to return to the city with his wife. Peter and Fevronia agreed to this.

When Peter became a prince again, his marriage did not collapse. Fevronia arrived and was able to win the respect of the people living in this city. Her life-giving power of love was so great that poles stuck in the ground turned into beautiful trees with her blessing. With her wisdom and kindness, she endeared herself to the townspeople. Fevronia never insulted those people who did not love her. She tried to teach her opponents a harmless lesson, to show them the mistakes they made in life.

Death that cannot part

July 8 - Day of Family, Love and Fidelity - personifies eternal love. She was in the lives of Peter and Fevronia. People who once wanted to separate a married couple were unable to do so. This turned out to be beyond the control not only of them, but also of death. When the couple felt the end of their lives approaching, they asked God to die on the same day and hour and prepared for themselves a common coffin made of stone with a thin partition.

In old age, Peter and Fevronia went to male and female monasteries. When the prince felt that he was dying, he sent to his wife to inform him that he was waiting for her and wanted to leave this world with her. As a result, Peter and Fevronia died on the same day.

After the death of their spouses, people put their bodies in separate coffins. The townspeople could not fulfill the desire of the dead to be buried in one coffin, because they considered such an act incompatible with the monastic path that Peter followed with Fevronia. The bodies were left in different monasteries, and the next day they were discovered together. People decided to make another attempt and again separated Peter and Fevronia, but in the end nothing worked out for them. The bodies of the spouses again ended up in a single coffin. For the third time, the residents of Murom no longer separated them. Peter and Fevronia were buried together.

The appearance of the holiday in Russia

In 1547, Peter and Fevronia were canonized as saints of God, that is, they were canonized. The couple began to be considered saints. Their memorial day fell on June 25 (July 8, new style). In 2001, Valentin Kachevan, who is the mayor of Murom, proposed making the 8th of July a holiday. A huge number of people's signatures were collected. All of them were sent to the State Duma.

The measures taken were not in vain. The Day of the Holy Princes Peter and Fevronia has become the All-Russian Day of Family Happiness and Marital Love. From now on, July 8 is a holiday. A special organizing committee was created to develop the attributes and symbols of this special day of the year. It was headed by Svetlana Medvedeva, who is the wife of Dmitry Medvedev, who was president at that time.

Symbolism of Family Day, fidelity and love

The created organizing committee developed what was included in its plans. The symbol of the holiday is the chamomile, which has a pair of multi-colored petals among its white petals. One petal is colored blue and the other is red. Chamomile was approved for a reason. This flower has long been considered a symbol of love. Chamomiles were used for fortune telling “loves - does not love.” They were also given by young men and women to their ladies and wives as a sign of respect, attention and love.

The organizing committee has also developed a medal “For Love and Fidelity” to be awarded on July 8 to those families in our country who can serve as an example for other people. On one side of the medal there is a portrait of the saints - Peter and Fevronia. The opposite side is decorated with the symbol of the holiday - a beautiful daisy.

Monuments to the Murom couple

In connection with the advent of the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, monuments to Peter and Fevronia began to be erected in Russia. The first of them appeared in 2008 in Murom, where a couple in love once lived. The sculptural composition was made according to the design of Nikolai Shcherbakov under the title “Union of Love - Wise Marriage” and installed in front of the city registry office on July 8. The holiday on this day was illuminated in Murom precisely from this event. The following year, monuments to Peter and Fevronia appeared in Arkhangelsk, Sochi, Ulyanovsk, Yaroslavl, and Abakan. Later they were erected in other settlements of our country.

To date, the idea of creating a monument to July 8 has been implemented in more than 60 Russian cities. All sculptures look different, because they were not created according to a single model. Each project has its own author, who came up with a certain image and embodied it in stone, but the meaning of all monuments is the same - it is the personification of family, eternal love and fidelity.

Traditions and signs of the holiday

On the Day of Saints Peter and Fevronia, it has become a good tradition to come to the monument. This is done by both couples in love and single people who dream of finding their soulmate. It is also customary for newlyweds to come to the sculpture of Peter and Fevronia and ask the saints for help in maintaining love and fidelity to each other.

It has become a tradition and sign that marriages take place on July 8th. There is a belief that people who enter into an alliance on this day will live a long and happy life together. Their marriage will be strong and prosperous. Years will not be able to destroy it.

Events of July 8

July 8, 1709 - The Russian army under the leadership of Peter the Great defeated the Swedish troops of King Charles XII during the Battle of Poltava

On the date of our review, the decisive event of the Great Northern War took place - the Battle of Poltava, the main “heroes” of which were the army of Peter I and the Swedish troops of Charles. After conquering Livonia from Sweden, the Russian emperor founded the fortified city of St. Petersburg, in response to this, Charles decided to capture Moscow and attack all of Central Russia.

Only his main mistake was that he moved towards the intended target from the southern side through Ukraine - bad climatic conditions prevented him. In addition, on the way to Russia, Charles’s army was repeatedly attacked by Kalmyks and Cossacks. As a result, the Swedish king finally reached Russia on April 30, 1709, but his army had already thinned out significantly by that time.

Having reached their intended goal, the Swedes began the siege of Poltava. However, its garrison under the leadership of Kelin gave an unexpected rebuff to the enemies. By June, the main forces of the Russian army, led by the emperor, entered Poltava. Having settled down on the banks of the Vorskla, Peter's army began to think about the concept of a decisive battle, which later became known as Poltava.

The surviving Swedes and King Charles fled to Bessarabia. It was the Battle of Poltava that strengthened Russia’s position during the Northern War; it laid a solid foundation for a number of victories of the Russian army and ensured victory in a grueling war.

July 8, 1944 - Introduction of the title and order “Mother Heroine”, “Maternal Glory”, as well as the “Motherhood Medal”

These awards were established by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR in 1944. The title "Heroine Mother" was a reward for Soviet mothers who raised at least ten children, provided that all children were alive.

The Order of Maternal Glory was awarded to those mothers who had seven to nine dependent children, and the Medal of Motherhood was widely used among women who had five to six children. As a result, 20 mothers were awarded the Order of Maternal Glory of the first degree, and twenty-six women received the Order of the Second degree.

The same number of mothers were awarded the order of the third degree. By 1983, about 4 million Soviet mothers with many children received the Order of Maternal Glory of one degree or another.

Signs of July 8 - the day of Peter and Fevronia

In the old days, hot days began to be counted at this time, saying that the weather would be very hot for 40 days. After this, autumn will begin. Few people know that this particular day, July 8, was considered the holiday of lovers, and today this tradition is observed in some villages. This day also had signs.

Among the people, Peter and Fevronia are revered as guardians of marital love and patrons of the family hearth. The legend tells that one day Prince Peter of Murom fell ill with leprosy and could not recover from it. But one day he had a dream that a peasant woman named Fevronia could help him.

Then Peter ordered to find such a girl. Instead of paying for treatment, she demanded only one thing from Peter - that he marry her. Peter promised to do this, but, having gotten rid of his illness, he went back on his word.

As a result, the disease returned. Peter repented and turned to Fevronia again, promising that he would marry her. Peter himself received the reign as an inheritance from his older brother, but the Murom boyars did not like Fevronia, a simple peasant woman, and they began to dissuade the prince from living with her, saying that he needed to leave the city or abandon his wife.

Together with Fevronia, Peter decided to leave Murom. However, unrest began among the people - people demanded the return of their prince.

Then Peter and Fevronia returned and ruled the city for a very long time. In old age, they decided to become monks and began to pray to God to die on the same day. The Lord fulfilled the request of Peter and Fevronia, who bequeathed to bury them in the same coffin.

However, this request was not fulfilled because it was considered obscene for the monks. And, despite the fact that the bodies of the dead were placed in different monasteries before the funeral, the next day Peter and Fevronia lay together.

Peter and Fevronia were canonized by the church in 1541, and since then people began to pray to them for happiness and well-being in the family, to ask for blessings for the wedding, and not only on July 8th. We can say that this holiday has something in common with Valentine's Day, but the difference is that July 8 is dedicated to married people.
