Higher Education at Florida Universities. Florida International University

Sooner or later, parents and their child face the question of where to get higher education. If in Russia, and especially in Moscow, there is not much choice, and the quality of education is known in advance, then what should those who are going to live permanently in Miami do? Not everyone can afford to send a child to top US universities, and our compatriots know almost nothing about studying in Florida. The 2Florida project decided to review the most interesting universities in Miami, talk about their place in the national rankings and study features.

State universities in Florida

The system of higher education in the United States differs significantly from its Russian counterpart. So, in Florida there is a so-called system of public universities, which includes 12 educational institutions, one of which - Florida International University - is located in Miami.

It is the fourth largest university in the United States with 54,000 students. In total, the university has 191 academic programs of study: 60 bachelor's, 81 master's and 34 doctoral programs, as well as 3 specialty programs. Education is conducted in 23 departments and schools.

According to the respected weekly U.S. News & World Report in 2015, the university ranks 203-268 among American universities, and is also included in the top 100 best programs in public relations, medicine and sociology.

Universities in Florida

The state university system includes 28 institutions of higher education, one of which - Miami Dade College - is located in Miami. It is worth noting that among the universities of the state, the college receives the least amount of funds from the budget.

The university includes preschool and school institutions, as well as programs of higher professional education. Of the 160,000 students, 6,000 are undergraduate students. The college received the right to provide bachelor's degrees only in 2003, which greatly simplified life for graduates of Miami Dade High School.

The main difference between Miami Dade College and other universities is the possibility of obtaining an associate degree. It is equivalent to two years of undergraduate study and is offered in both social and technical sciences. In some professions, such as paralegal, preschool teacher or midwife, this degree is sufficient for employment.

Private universities in Florida

There are more than 30 private higher education institutions in Florida, and five of them are in Miami. The best of them is the University of Miami - one of the largest universities in terms of the number of students, in which 15 thousand students study. It has undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in 12 departments and schools. U.S. rated. News & World Report 2015, the university takes the final 48th place in the United States and is in the top 50 in chemistry and medicine.

Religious universities in Florida

In total, there are 35 religious universities in Florida, five of which are located in Miami. We will talk about the three most interesting of them.

American David Livingstone University of Florida is one of the few universities that offers students distance education, which is conducted, including in Russian. The university was created for immigrants from Russia and the CIS and offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs. All learning comes through the prism of Christian positions.

Barry University has a Catholic bias and offers programs in medicine, business, history, etc. More than 4 thousand students study at the university. In total, the university has 50 programs that are taught in 9 departments and schools. The main focus is on those who already work full time, so classes are held both in the evening and on weekends.

St. Thomas University teaches about 4 thousand students who receive a variety of bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in six departments and schools. The bias of the university is Catholic, which, however, does not prevent students from 50 different countries from studying together.

Specialized universities in Florida

The American system of higher professional education includes highly specialized universities. There are 23 of these in Florida, and some of them are in Miami.

So, the College of Business and Technology offers students to get bachelor's degrees in accounting, graphic design, etc. The main feature of the university is short-term programs and associate certificates in medicine, computer science, and web design.

And at Miami International University of Art & Design, more than 2.9 thousand students study in six areas of design.

Michael Lawson, Deputy Director for Recruiting of the international educational group Shorelight Education, which represents the University of Central Florida (University of Central Florida) and Florida International University (Florida International University), told Osvita.ua about the opportunities that these universities provide to Ukrainian students.

Michael, please tell us briefly about the peculiarities of getting higher education in the United States.

Education in the US is different from education in the UK and Europe. In America, you don't focus on one special subject. While studying in Britain, he studied politics and was focused on it all four years. In the USA, this cannot be: for the first two years you will study mathematics, science, business, art and politics. American learning is characterized by a broader outlook and a comprehensive approach. If we look at the Ukrainian certificate, we can see that students in Ukraine study up to twenty subjects, which prepares them very well for the American system, and thanks to this experience they feel good studying in the United States.

In America, there are basic - profile subjects and additional ones. For example, you dream of working in the oil and gas industry, but at the same time do not want to deal with purely technical issues. Then you can study the main subject - business, and engineering will be an additional one. This approach will allow you to choose the main and secondary aspects of your future career.

Another advantage of education in the USA is the quality of the infrastructure of American universities. Thanks to powerful funding, it is the best in the world. We are talking not only about the academic infrastructure - first-class laboratories and auditoriums, but also about recreational and sports facilities. The University of Central Florida has six pools on campus, including two Olympic pools and one resort pool, the kind you're used to seeing in Turkey while on vacation. The campus itself is stylized as a resort town, which has a recreational center, theater, hotels and similar infrastructure.

Not everyone in Ukraine knows that studying in the USA is especially focused on the successful employment of graduates. Can you elaborate on this?

Certainly. A particular benefit of pursuing a higher education in the United States is the internship, practice and employment opportunities that are part of the training.

In our time, it is not enough to have a document on graduation from the university and consider it a significant advantage in the labor market. Now many people have it. What is most valuable in our time is work experience. The employer pays much attention to the availability and quality of such experience. In the job market, applicants are expected to have a practical understanding of the key skills required for a successful career.

A very important part of the mission of American universities is the successful employment of graduates. In practice, this is achieved through internships. After completing your studies in America, you can stay for a certain time and gain work experience. When you graduate, you are eligible to apply for OPT - Optional Practical Training - an internship for which a visa is granted for 27 months, with which you can work in any job in America, depending on your specialty. If the graduate studied well, he is given the opportunity to work in a very good company. Specialties from the field of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are in special demand, and it is during training in them that such a long-term visa is issued for a full-fledged paid internship.

In addition to the OPT internship, which the student takes after completing the training, there is such a type of joint internship with training as CPT - Curriculum Practical Training (3, 6, 12 months). It is also a paid internship that, like the OPT, takes place at Fortune Top 500 companies.

How exactly is an internship opportunity implemented at the University of Central Florida and Florida International University?

Our universities offer about 50,000 different internship options. The companies that accept the most students for internships with us are Siemens Computers, Disney, Boeing Airplanes, Lockheed Martin. In these companies, you can work in the engineering department, marketing department, sales department.

The internship also takes place in other companies from the Fortune Top-500 list. For example, a student from Odessa spent three months on probation in the advertising department of the Sea World cruise company. She received not only unique practical experience and real skills, but also the opportunity to start a career in this company. Another Ukrainian woman from Kyiv is doing a 6-month internship in the marketing department of Pink, a well-known company in the US fashion industry, and gaining similar benefits.

In addition to OPT and CPT, students studying hotel management and hospitality are guaranteed internships in hotels specially built for this purpose on the territory of our universities. Students thus receive concrete practice, thanks to which they will become attractive to employers. In addition to the fact that during this internship, students gain experience, they also earn money.

ComplicatedwhetherUkrainianenrollon theeducationinUniversity of Central FloridaandFlorida International University?

For a long time, the world was dominated by the misconception that it was very difficult to get into an American university. We are radically changing this kind of representation and guarantee receipt within 24 hours. Because we want students from all over the world to study with us, we want Ukrainians to study with us. Therefore, we offer an adaptation preparatory program of the first year, after which the Ukrainian applicant can immediately move on to the second year of study at the university.

The applicant does not even need to take IELTS or TOEFL - we will take his internal English exam from him. He does not need to provide SAT scores.

The first year program will allow you to study the same subjects that are studied by freshmen of our universities. But it also includes additional classes on the ability to learn, on the ability of self-presentation, writing. These are the key skills you will need to succeed at university. During the program, the applicant also gets acquainted with the life of the campus: he attends American football competitions, gets acquainted with various aspects of university life, finds out what teachers and classmates expect from him.

Studying this program costs the same as the cost of the first year of study at the university, but at the same time, the student receives additional training and support for success in the upcoming studies. For example, when you arrive on campus, you will be assisted by a Russian-speaking student a year older than you, who, like an older brother or sister, will help you integrate into the learning process and overcome difficulties. In addition, for every 50 international students, we assign an academic curator who will also provide assistance in resolving various problems.

Tell us a little more about the universities themselves.

The University of Central Florida is the second largest university in the United States and one of the most popular among applicants. It has an impressive campus in sunny Orlando, Florida, the resort and leisure capital, as well as award-winning engineering and computer science curricula, numerous internships and internships for students from all departments.

This university has 6,000 international students from all over the world. 80% of them live directly on campus. It would take six hours to walk around the campus. It will take 55 minutes to cross it in a straight line. In total, about 60,000 students study at the university. We have a stadium for American football for 55,000 spectators - it's almost like a stadium in Kyiv.

Orlando provides many job opportunities from Disneyland to Universal Film Studios and other companies where you can work in the HR department, in the marketing department, and in other areas.

Florida International University is a public university located in the south of Florida, in Miami. Opened in 1972, this university is considered the largest multidisciplinary university in all of Florida. Here, great attention is paid to scientific research, which is carried out through grants and contracts. Today, the university teaches about two hundred preparatory, bachelor's and doctoral programs, and 95% of the faculty have doctoral and scientific degrees.

The university is located in the famous resort city of Miami and has two main campuses: Modesto A. Maidique Campus and Biscayne Bay Campus. The first is located in the west of Miami, and on its territory there is a student residence, FIU Arena, the largest library "Eight-story Steven and Dorothea Green Library, a nature reserve, a stadium, sports fields, and the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum". The second campus is located in the northeastern part of the city - it occupies a 200-acre territory, which houses the best colleges of the university, in particular the "School of Hospitality" and the "School of Journalism and Media".

The university itself ranks highly in the rankings, ranking eighth for marketing and seventh for international business in the U.S. news. The university is also known for its training in the field of hotel management and hospitality due to the rich hotel infrastructure located on campus.

The advantage of studying at these universities is the quality of life in Florida, which is not expensive. Living in Florida is no more expensive than living in Kyiv. Florida offers a very high quality of life at a very affordable price. These are clean streets and a year of sunny days with an average temperature of 22 degrees Celsius. Students live in dormitories in the center of the campus, which are apartments with four rooms. Americans live in two rooms, foreign students live in two. The campus is absolutely safe and comfortable.

What expenses should Ukrainian students prepare for?

The cost of education at our universities is 22.5 thousand dollars a year. But since we are interested in Ukrainian students, we provide them with a 20% discount on tuition, which will be another minus 4,500 dollars from the cost of tuition. Thus, the cost of training will be only about 18 thousand dollars. Books, food, insurance and housing will cost another 10 thousand. In general, all expenses will amount to 25-32 thousand dollars a year.

In addition, not only our universities, but American universities as a whole are characterized by the possibility of obtaining numerous types of scholarships, the number of which is in the thousands!

One student from Ukraine managed to apply simultaneously for more than 50 types of scholarships and received several positive responses. Someone gave her $500 for books, someone gave her $3,000 to cover tuition. Through scholarships, she covered 70% of the cost of the second year of study. Plus, she worked 20 hours a week on campus, where she accompanied newly arrived students. Therefore, she still had money for her own expenses.

Thus, if you have money for tuition and living expenses in the first year, you can cover the second and subsequent years with the help of numerous types of scholarships and part-time work on campus.

Universities are interested both in the foreign students themselves in order to increase the internationalization of the student body, and in their successful employment. At the same time, companies are interested in foreign students, as they have representative offices and production facilities abroad around the world. For the students themselves, the benefits of studying in Florida and subsequent internships are obvious: last year, 70% of our graduates' internships turned into real full-time employment.

    Interviewed by Pavel Petrichenko,osvita. ua

The University of Florida is a public institution that was founded in 1853.

The University of Florida is located about two miles from downtown Gainesville, a campus backed by a school with almost 50,000 students. The Florida Gators sports teams compete in the NCAA Division I Southeastern Conference, and are supported by the mascots Albert and Albert the Alligators. The Gator football team that competes at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium - commonly referred to as "The Swamp" - is especially notorious. The team became the namesake of the popular sports drinking Gatorade in 1966, after the Gators freshmen experimented with the new drink. The annual Gator Growl, held every Homecoming weekend, has been named the biggest student-run Pep rally in the world. About 15 percent of students take part in the school's 60-plus fraternities and sororities. Freshmen do not have to live on campus, although about 80 percent of opt-ins do so. All students can take part in Gator Nights every Friday, which offer free late night entertainment and a free "midnight breakfast."

The school is well regarded for graduate programs through the School of Engineering, the Hough Graduate School of Business, the Levin College of Law and the College of Medicine. The university is also integrated with the Oak Hammock retirement community, where students can work, complete internships in health sciences and find mentors. Notable University of Florida alumni include TV home renovation sensation Bob Vila, Heisman Trophy winner Steve Spurrier, and former U.S. meaning. Bob Graham and Connie Mack.

    Story

The University of Florida traces its origins to 1853, when East Florida Seminary, the oldest of the University of Florida's four predecessor institutions, was founded in Ocala, Florida.

On January 6, 1853, Governor Thomas Brown signed a bill that provided public support for higher education in the state of Florida. Gilbert Kingsbury was the first person to take advantage of the legislation, and established the East Florida Seminary, which operated until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861. The East Florida Seminary was Florida's first state-supported institution of higher education.

James Henry Roper, a North Carolina educator and state senator from Alachua, opened a school in Gainesville, Gainesville Academy, in 1858. In 1866, Roper offered his land and school in Florida in exchange for the relocation of East Florida Seminary in Gainesville.

The second major predecessor of the University of Florida was Florida Agricultural College, established in Lake City by Jordan Probst in 1884. Florida Agricultural College was the state's first land-grant college under the Morrill Act. In 1903, the Florida Legislature, desiring to broaden the school's horizons and curriculum beyond its agricultural and engineering backgrounds, changed the name of the Florida Agricultural College to "The University of Florida," the school's name would only hold for two years.

In 1905, the Florida legislature passed the Buckman Act, which consolidated the state's publicly supported institutions of higher education. The legislator who wrote the act, Henry Holland Buckman, later became the namesake of Buckman Hall, one of the university's oldest buildings. The Beckman Act organized the Florida State University system and created the Florida Board of Governors to administer the system. The act abolished six previously existing state-supported higher education institutions, and consolidated the assets and curricula of four of them to form the new "Florida State University." The four predecessor institutions consolidated to form the new university included University of Florida at Lake City(formerly Florida Agricultural College) in Lake City, the East Florida Seminary in Gainesville, the the street. Petersburg Normal and Industrial School in St. Petersburg, and South Florida Military College in Bartow.

The Buckman Act also consolidated colleges and schools into three institutions separated by race and gender—Florida State University for white men, Florida Women's College for white women, and the Normal Public School for students of color for African American men and women.

The city of Gainesville, led by its mayor William Reuben Thomas, campaigned to be home to the new university. On July 6, 1905, the Board of Control selected Gainesville for the new campus. Andrew Sledd, president of the formerly University of Florida at Lake City, was chosen to be the first president of the new Florida State University. The 1905-1906 school year was a year of transition; The new Florida State University was officially established, but operated on the campus of the old University of Florida in Lake City until the first buildings on the new Gainesville campus were completed. Architect William. Edwards designed the first official campus buildings in the Collegiate Gothic style. Classes began on the new Gainesville campus on September 26, 1906, with 102 students enrolled.

In 1909, the school's name was officially simplified from "Florida State University" to "University of Florida."

The alligator was incidentally chosen as the school's mascot in 1911, after a local supplier ordered and sold school pennants with the crocodile emblem imprinted on them. The school colors, orange and blue, are believed to be derived from the blue and white school colors of Florida Agricultural College in Lake City and the orange and black colors of East Florida Seminary in Gainesville.

In 1909, Albert Murphrey was named the university's second president, and organized several of the university's colleges, increasing enrollment from under 200 to over 2,000, and he was instrumental in establishing the leadership of the Florida Blue Key Society. Murphrey is Florida's only university president honored with a statue on campus.

In 1924, the Florida legislature sanctioned women of that "mature age" (at least twenty-one years old) who had completed sixty semester hours from a "reputable institution" to be allowed to enroll during regular semesters at Florida State University in programs that were not available at Florida State College for women. Prior to this, only the summer semester was coeducational, to accommodate female teachers who would like to continue their education during the summer holidays. Lassi Goodbread-Black from Lake City became the first woman to attend the University of Florida, at the College of Agriculture in 1925.

John J. Tigert became the university's third president in 1928. Dissatisfied with the under-the-table payments made by university athletes, Tigert established an athletic scholarship grant program in the early 1930s, which was the genesis of the modern athletic scholarship plan that is used by the National Student Association. sports.

In 1985, the University of Florida was invited to join the Association of American Universities (AAU), an organization of sixty-two academically distinguished public and private research universities in the United States and Canada. Florida is one of seventeen public land-selling universities that belong to the AAU. In 2009, President Bernie Machan and theUniversity of Florida Board of Regents announced an important policy transition for the university. The Board of Trustees supported a reduction in the number of undergraduates and a shift in financial and other academic resources for graduate education and research.
