Metal drainage systems: reliability and functionality

It is known that water stagnant on the roof can seep into the concrete thickness of the walls and reach the basement of even multi-storey structures, causing significant damage in the form of a decrease in the strength characteristics of the supporting structure of the building.

A metal drain is the most reliable and durable type of construction for water drainage. If the drainage system is made of galvanized steel without a polymer coating, then the sound of rain and water running down the drain will become an integral sound that accompanies precipitation in the form of rain, hail. This will also happen during periods of snowmelt.

Design

The metal gutter system is a set of elements of a gutter and pipes, as well as a funnel and a drain, an end section of the gutter and end drains. Gutters made of galvanized stainless steel and aluminum are characterized by high strength properties. They do not deform under the influence of frost (up to -40 C) and significant heat (up to +120 C).

Due to the polymer coating of metal elements, which is applied on both sides, the product lasts much longer. The polymer layer is an additional protection against corrosion. The polymers used to cover gutters are polyester, pural or plastisol. These materials significantly extend the service life of metal products.

Another advantage of the polymer coating is the fact that the noise of rain and water running down the drain is almost inaudible. The thicker the polymer layer, the higher the sound insulation properties. Our company offers products with a polymer coating from well-known manufacturers: Grand line, Aquasystem, Galeco, etc.

Advantages

  • They are in high demand among consumers, because they do not lose their properties under various temperature conditions.
  • Asian heat or northern cold, tropical rains or desert drought - steel gutter systems are not afraid of such climatic conditions.
  • The polymer coating is characterized by a wide range of colors, which allows you to choose products that will be in harmony with the existing roofing and facade materials.
  • They are a spectacular final accent on the roofs of buildings of various functional purposes, as if complementing the architectural design.
  • Metal structures are perfect for roofs made of metal tiles and corrugated board, flexible, composite tiles or slate, as well as seam roofs.
  • In addition to its direct purpose, a metal drain performs a certain role of decorative decoration on many structures.

Metal gutters have a longer service life (up to 50 years) compared to plastic ones. A high degree of resistance to corrosion and mechanical stress in the form of a sliding layer of snow or ice allows them to remain in the lead.

Mounting

Drains made of metal are simple and easy to install on the roof and facades. They provide long-term operation even in the most severe climatic conditions, high corrosion resistance and mechanical strength that meets the highest standards for drainage systems.

Thirty years ago, metal gutters were the only structures that ensured the removal of melt and rainwater from the roofs of buildings to places predetermined by developers. Then came plastic systems, an active and well-thought-out advertising campaign allowed manufacturers to sell goods that did not meet the same quality at high prices. In absolutely all technical parameters, plastic is inferior to galvanized steel, consumers have seen this in practice, and metal gutters again took their rightful place in the building materials market. Unfortunately, the cost of structures for several years has managed to increase significantly, today metal drainage systems are much more expensive than plastic ones.

For the manufacture of the system, several types of metals are used with or without special surface coatings. Each type has its positive and negative sides.

Material nameBrief description, technical and operational characteristics

The cheapest systems are made of metal; sheet metal up to 0.5 mm thick from low-alloy steels is used as a raw material. The technical parameters of rolled products and steel grades comply with the provisions of the current GOST 16523-97 and GOST 1050-88. Regulatory documents establish the fields of deviations in the thickness and width of the sheet, the characteristics of the zinc coating. For gutters, the thickness of zinc must be at least 35 microns, the presence of streaks and gaps is prohibited. Depending on the galvanizing technology, the appearance of galvanized surfaces may change, they are shiny or have a crystalline structure. The service life of galvanized drainage systems is fifty or more years, specific values depend on the characteristics of the zinc layer and adherence to the technology of applying an anti-corrosion coating. Such systems are considered traditional, but are currently used infrequently.

Modern metal gutters made of galvanized steel with a finishing coating of surfaces. To improve the appearance and additional protection of the metal from corrosion, resistant polymer, acrylic or enamel paints are used. They have a large selection of colors, depending on the type of paint, the warranty period increases. The most expensive systems with polymer paints, enamel are considered a budget option.

Over time, under the influence of acids, aluminum is covered with a small layer of oxides, which protects the surface from further oxidation. In terms of service life, the metal is considered to be life-long, and one of the most expensive in terms of cost. Gutters are made of sheet metal with a thickness of 0.3–0.5 mm. To improve the design look of aluminum surfaces are painted with special dyes.

In terms of cost, the most expensive products belong to the prestigious elite class. They are installed only on expensive cottages, they are often used during the reconstruction or overhaul of historical or religious buildings. The service life is practically unlimited, the outer surface is covered with a layer of patina over time, due to this the drain takes on an old look. Patina is a thin protective copper oxide that prevents the spread of corrosion processes deep into the metal.

Metal systems can be round and square, homemade and factory. The installation algorithm does not depend on the geometry, the shape only affects the appearance and production technology of manufacturing the system elements. As for homemade gutters, for work you need to have not only special tools and equipment, but also a lot of practical experience as a tinsmith. Only professionals can deal with such a thing, it makes no sense to describe the technology of work in an article for an ordinary developer.

Installation steps

Before proceeding with the installation of drainage systems, several preparatory steps should be completed.

  1. Drawing up a layout of the drainage system on the building. It is recommended to draw a diagram indicating all sizes. While drawing, you should consider the specific locations of ebbs, transitions, funnels, etc. Decisions are made taking into account the features of the truss system, the location of areas for the removal of melt and rainwater, the availability of reclamation, the number of buildings and material opportunities - you have to pay for everything.
  2. Counting the number and determining the nomenclature of the drainage system. This is a very important point, any mistake will definitely have negative consequences.
  3. Preparation of tools and fixtures, installation of a spillway.
  4. Checking the functionality of all elements, fine-tuning adjustments and correcting errors found.

There is no need to rush, each stage is important, a careful approach to solving emerging issues is required.

What elements make up metal gutters

Regardless of the type of metal and the method of production of the spillway system, it consists of elements that are identical in purpose. Differences may be in appearance (size, geometry, color, thickness), but the functional responsibilities for each are identical.

gutter

It has various diameters and is designed to drain water from slopes into funnels. Mounted on special holders, should have a slope of approximately 0.3–0.7 mm towards the drain. Mounted around the perimeter of the building, it can be solid or divided into separate independent sections. The diameter is calculated taking into account the area of slopes and the maximum debit in the catchment area. The open ends are closed with plugs with rubber seals.

Funnel gutter

Receives water from the gutter and directs it to downpipes. It greatly facilitates the installation of the system, allows you to break a long gutter into separate sections in the right places.

Gutter connector

Special element for connecting gutters with corner pieces. It has rubber seals to prevent leaks.

Rotary corners

Standard 90° angle, external and internal connection options available. For complex weir systems, 135° angles can be used.

Downspouts

They drain water from the gutters in a vertical position, connectors can be used to connect two pipes.

Swivel tees, swivel elbows, and drains

They look like two small pieces of pipes connected at different angles. They are mounted in places where pipes turn from a funnel to a vertical pipe or at the outlet of water from a pipe at the bottom of the system.

Pipe clamps

Purpose - fastening pipes to the facade walls of the house. Depending on the material the walls are made of, they have design features.

Fixing brackets

Used to fix the gutter around the perimeter of the building. They can be fixed both to the crate and to the cornice strip.

The specific weir scheme depends on the architectural features of the roof and structure, but manufacturers have developed general recommendations for all cases. Their implementation is mandatory, the duration of the operation of the system, its reliability, tightness, and the ability to cope with maximum water flows depend on this.

  1. The distance between the holders (brackets) of the gutters is within 60–90 cm. Experienced roofers are strongly advised to mount additional brackets in the places where the connectors are installed, here the strength of the gutter is significantly reduced. Each holder must be fixed with at least two screws or nails.
  2. The number of funnels does not necessarily correspond to the number of vertical pipes. There are options for drains in which a spillway from two funnels is connected to one vertical pipe, redirection is carried out using tees.
  3. The diameter of funnels, pipes and gutters is calculated depending on the maximum volume of wastewater per second. In practice, the number of funnels is selected based on one element per 10 running meters of gutters or 100m2 of slopes. Plugs are used only on blind ends, connectors are used in all intermediate joints.
  4. The distance between clamps for vertical pipes is approximately 1.5 m, it is advisable to additionally strengthen all turns, regardless of the location of the nearest clamp.

Scheme of fastening the bracket, gutter

Step by step installation instructions

To work, you will need a hacksaw, a tool for precise bending of brackets (below we will tell you how you can do it yourself), self-tapping screws with a screwdriver, a bubble level, a building chopping cord, silicone putty, metal bending pliers and a marker.

Important. For brackets with installation on the eaves board and universal brackets, a distance of no more than 60 cm is recommended. This increases the reliability of fixing the gutters and increases the service life of the spillway system.

The gutter should be mounted in such a way that the continuation of the roof overhang line is about 2 cm higher than the edge of the element, and the edge itself is located in the zone of 1/3 of its width. This is a very important condition, otherwise water will not enter the weir.

Step 1. Make a mark on the eaves for the location of the drain, it is fixed at a distance of no more than 15 cm from the edge of the slope.

Step 2 Bend the required number of brackets, taking into account the horizontal inclination of the gutter and the angle of inclination of the slopes. The bending angle of the brackets must be equal to the angle of inclination of the slope plus 90°.

Step 3 Fasten the first and last bracket in the marked places. Check their position again. Pull the thread between the elements, the slope is within three millimeters per linear meter. The remaining elements are mounted along the rope.

Important. At the joints of the gutters, the brackets should be at a distance of no more than 15 cm on both sides. This arrangement will ensure structural strength, the gutter will not stagger at the junction, which will eliminate the risk of leaks.

Step 4 Remove the protective plastic film from the gutter.

Cut a hole for the drain. It must be done in this order.

  1. Remove the exact dimensions of the location of the drain.
  2. Attach a vertical drain pipe to the bottom of the gutter and draw a circle with a marker.
  3. Carefully cut out the hole with a hacksaw. You need to cut on both sides, the hole will look like an oval.
  4. Bend the cut edges slightly towards the pipe with sheet metal bending pliers.

Step 5 Put the gutter in place, bend the metal fixing elements, attach the drain. Put on the end cap, fix its position.

Step 6 Secure the corners in place. Depending on the design features, the connection points must be additionally sealed. There are systems on which the manufacturer has already installed special rubber gaskets. The corners are fixed with metal plates to the gutters of the drainage system. The connecting elements are mounted in the same way on the straight sections of the system.

Important. If the drainage structure has brackets that are attached to the cornice boards, then the connecting element must be installed separately.

According to the same algorithm, continue the installation of all gutters around the perimeter of the building. Install funnels to receive water immediately. After all the gutters are in place, you can begin mounting the vertical pipes.

Before starting work, developers should already know the location of the elements, make markings on the facade walls, and solve problems with further water drainage from the basement and foundation of the building.

Step 1. Use the swivel parts to guide the vertical pipe to the wall. Rotary elements are fixed with special hardware, they are sold complete with systems. The vertical pipe should be at a distance of 5-10 cm from the facade wall.

Step 2 3–5 cm below the end of the last turn, install the first pipe clamp. Depending on the material of the facade wall, specific technologies for their fastening are used. If the house is made of masonry materials, then you need to drill with a drill with a victorious solder, switch the drill to perforation mode.

Step 3 Beat off an even vertical line on the wall surface and prepare holes for all fixing elements. The distance between them is approximately 1.5 m.

Be sure to remove the protective plastic film before installing the pipes in place. No need to leave it and hope that such a trick will increase the life of vertical pipes. The result will be the opposite. Water stagnates in the cracks of the film, in these places visible signs of metal oxidation appear faster. In addition, the appearance deteriorates significantly - the film will tear in a few months, pieces of polyethylene will hang on the surface. It will no longer be possible to break the protection, you will have to get used to the strange design of the drainage system.

Practical advice. All metal pipes have a longitudinal seam. This is a technological production necessity; it is impossible to manufacture pipes from thin sheet steel without a seam. During installation, make sure that the seam turns towards the wall.

Tighten the fastening clamps carefully, do not deform the pipes. Check the fastening strength with your hands, the elements should not stagger under fairly heavy loads.

If the house has a ready-made reclamation system - excellent, a turn should be attached to the lower end of the vertical pipe so that water enters a special inlet. If there is no such system, then the water is diverted to the blind area or to a rain collection container.

The final stage

Check the functionality of the system, each drain should be controlled separately. Experienced craftsmen measure the amount of water poured onto the roof and drained. The difference in volume indicates the presence of deflections of the gutters or leaky connections. Problems need to be found and fixed.

  1. Always buy cans of special paint to match the outer surfaces of pipes and gutters. Mechanical damage to the protective and decorative layer of pipes must be painted in the same way as it is done with a metal roof. Be very careful about this process, then during the operation of the building it is quite difficult to eliminate leaks at high altitude. When repairing a roof, you can work on the roof; this technology is not suitable for drains. Especially many problems appear on multi-storey buildings.

  2. Never cut off metal parts with a grinder and a metal disc. The drainage system has heavy loads at the junctions, and it is here that you have to cut. After the grinder, the strength of the metal decreases, corrosion processes accelerate.

  3. Before starting work, it is recommended to transfer the system installation scheme from the sketch to the walls of the house. The lines must have installation marks for each element - if inaccuracies are found, it is possible to correct them without much difficulty.

  4. It is advisable to work with an assistant. The metal for structural elements is thin, it can be deformed during lifting and installation. Any mechanical damage has a negative impact on the duration of operation.

Bending fixture

Problems can arise during the installation of brackets fixed to the crate of the truss system. These brackets look like long metal strips, at one end of which there is a semicircular gutter grip.

Why is it difficult to attach them?

  1. The elements must ensure a uniform slope of the gutter along the entire length of the slope; elevations or recesses are strictly prohibited.
  2. Each roof has a different pitch, and brackets must hold the gutters in position. Their upper edges must be strictly horizontal, the gutter must lie on the bent plates with the entire surface. Moreover, the bending angles must be made the same for all elements of one slope. On complex roofs, the slopes can have different slopes, the spillway system must take this feature into account.

It is impossible to fulfill the listed conditions of manual bending, it is necessary to use special tools or make an elementary device. The tool is bought by professional roofers, ordinary developers do not need it, it is much more profitable to prepare the fixture on their own.

Step 1. Lay the brackets on a flat surface, the number depends on the total length of the gutter, taking into account the maximum distances between fixing points.

Step 2 Mark the angle of the gutter. The first bracket is the highest, the last is the lowest. For example, if the length of the slope is five meters, then the difference in length between the first and last bracket is three to four centimeters.

Important. The longer the slope, the less the slope of the gutter needs to be done, but the minimum slope is 5 mm per linear meter. The fact is that on long slopes the gutter can go so far from the edge of the roof that rainwater will not get into it. In such situations, two drain funnels should be placed on a long gutter.

Step 3 Draw a line between the extreme points. There will be an oblique line on each strip, but it must be bent in a straight line. To do this, draw a perpendicular line from the bottom of the oblique line using a rectangle. Repeat the same operations with all brackets.

Step 4 Prepare a flat board about 4 cm thick, 30–40 cm long and 15–20 cm wide. Make a groove in the middle part of the board with a cutter, the width and depth should be 1–2 mm larger than the dimensions of the metal strip of the holders. This is the most difficult part of making a fixture, but with the right woodworking tools, it will take no more than five minutes to prepare the board.

Step 5 Close the groove with metal strips, unnecessary pieces of factory holders will do. Install three or four of them in such a way that the metal part of the bracket easily passes through the clearance.

Step 6 Fix the same metal strips on a fixed wooden surface. This can be a desktop or any long board used as a temporary stop. The fixture is ready, now you can bend the gutter holders exactly at a given angle and at the required distance.

A factory tool costs about five to six thousand rubles, for that kind of money you can make it yourself. The technology for installing a metal and plastic drainage system is almost the same, but there are minor features caused by the technical characteristics of the materials for the manufacture of drainage systems.

Water can have a devastating effect on almost all types of building materials, damaging their appearance and technical characteristics. To avoid such an impact, when it comes to rainwater on the facade of the house, special gutter systems are used. Consider what advantages metal gutters have for a roof: prices, varieties and features of this type.

Whatever material the drainage system consists of, it includes several elements, each of which has its own purpose and must be ideally suited to the conditions in which it is used. Briefly, the constituent parts can be listed as follows:

  • gutter;

  • funnels;
  • pipes;
  • plugs;
  • knees and turns;
  • nets to prevent debris from entering drainpipes;
  • all kinds of fasteners: clamps, pins, pipe connectors, brackets.

Gutters made of galvanized steel are the most popular, as in terms of strength and reliability, they are quite capable of meeting the requirements of the average user. At the same time, due to the possibility of applying a polymer coating, they have a wide variety of colors, which allows you to choose the right option for any home. And although copper structures are still more reliable, galvanized gutters remain the undisputed leaders.

How to install roof guttersdepending on the type of roof

Before you install a drain, you need to figure out what type of roof you have to work with, and what installation nuances you will have to observe. So, for example, in the case of a flat roof, it is permissible to use special drain funnels that are installed directly into the openings of the floors. The water that gets into them goes down through the tubes and enters the storm sewer system.

However, it will be necessary to take care of such a drainage system in advance, so that even at the stage of building a flat roof, special slopes to the drain points can be provided. They will allow rainwater to fall directly into the funnel. If there is a parapet on the roof, then water will be drained directly through it using horizontal funnels for the roof - scuppers. Passing through them, water enters the pipes.

Helpful advice! The system of internal drainage of precipitation is extremely effective, especially when it comes to building a house in a region with a cold climate. This allows you to get rid of the most common problem - freezing water inside the drainage system.

A gutter system for sloping roofs looks completely different and more familiar. In this case, an external drain is used, which includes gutters responsible for conducting rainwater to the pipes.

Which drain is better: plastic or metal

The main competitor of metal gutters is plastic structures, which have a much lower cost, which means they attract buyers who want to save money. Consider which option is preferable: plastic or metal drain? And is it worth saving on the purchase of such an important system as a gutter.

The first thing consumers are interested in is how durable plastic systems are inferior to metal ones, and whether this difference will cause an early failure if they prefer a cheaper option. Here it is worth paying attention to the features of fasteners. So, clamps designed for fixing a metal drain are able to withstand a static load of up to 180 kg. In addition, in this case, a rigid fastening system is used, which means the immobility of all structural elements.

The elements of the plastic drain are attached quite loosely, since this material is prone to expansion as a result of exposure to temperatures. Simply put, in cold or warm weather, pipes and gutters will change their dimensions, so an attempt to fix them tightly will very soon lead to deformation of the entire drainage system.

Thus, metal gutters are undeniably stronger and more reliable than plastic ones.

Another important criterion is the resistance of materials to external factors. Plastic gutters are stable in themselves and do not rust. Corrosive processes are in principle not able to occur, which makes this material an ideal option if installation in an aggressive environment is required. For example, such a solution is perfect for a house located on the coast, where there is high humidity and salt content in the air.

By itself, the metal is much more sensitive to external factors, however, due to the presence of a polymer coating, the properties are practically equalized. True, the owners of metal gutters will have to constantly ensure that there are no scratches on the elements of the systems. If even the slightest damage is found, it must be immediately repaired. But with proper care, the operational life of such gutters is more than a dozen years.

Features of the installation of plastic and metal gutters for the roof

Despite the fact that, in general, the order of fastening elements is preserved regardless of the material of the drain, the fixing method is still different:

  • to connect plastic elements, special adhesive compositions are used, which allow them to be inseparably fastened together. This method is used for plugs, funnels, etc.;

  • if you have to fasten metal elements, then no adhesives will cope with this task. In this case, you have to resort to the use of special locks or flexible petals.

There is an opinion that the installation process of metal systems is somewhat simpler in comparison with plastic ones. However, it is impossible to say for sure. Much depends on the type of roof with which you have to work, as well as the quality of the purchased elements.

Metal gutters for the roof: pricesfor various types of structures

The price of metal gutters is affected by the diameter and length of the pipe, as well as the type and quality of the metal used. So, for example, if the slope area does not exceed 50 m², gutters with a width of 100 mm and pipes with a diameter of 75 mm will be sufficient. For a roof from 50 to 100 m², the recommended dimensions will be slightly different - 125 and 87 mm, respectively. For large houses with a roof area exceeding 100 m², gutters and pipes less than 150 and 100 mm in diameter simply will not do the job.

It is also worthwhile to calculate in advance the required number of fasteners, since they have different costs and in total can make up a significant part of all the costs of arranging the system. The recommended step for the location of the brackets is 50-60 cm. And to fix one pipe, 2-3 clamps will be required, provided that it is solid. If the pipe is composite, then a separate clamp is required for each part of it.

metalroof gutters: price for products from various manufacturers

Today, there are several of the most popular systems that are in great demand when it comes to arranging private homes. And among these proposals, each buyer can find an option that suits him in terms of quality and cost. Let's consider the best of them.

Metal gutters Aquasystem - an average cost option. The price for 1 running meter is 366 rubles. At the same time, users note the excellent quality of products and leave mostly positive reviews.

Ruukki is a metal drain, the price of which will seem unreasonably high to many. It cannot be said that this statement is not substantiated, given the fact that 1 m.p. will cost about 594 rubles. However, those who are not used to saving and like to get the appropriate quality for their money will certainly appreciate this option properly.

As an alternative to the expensive Ruukki, consider the Vegasstock gutters. Their cost is only about 147 rubles m.p. So this is a great option for those who do not plan to spend money seriously and prefer to opt for a budget option.

As can be seen from the above examples, you can buy metal gutters for a roof at a very different price. And it is difficult to say unequivocally how this will affect its operation. Much depends on the quality of the installation, as well as compliance with all recommendations for caring for the system. In some cases, even the simplest and cheapest gutter can serve well for decades. And sometimes you have to deal with the fact that expensive and high-quality elements were damaged during the installation process, which eventually led to their malfunction.

It is for this reason that it is recommended to think carefully before starting an independent installation. Of course, the price of installing a gutter may seem prohibitive, given the simplicity of the process itself. However, it is important to understand what the price for the work includes.

Overview of popular manufacturers. How to install a gutter with your own hands. Heating systems for gutters and drains.

The installation of the drain must be done properly, taking into account all the subtleties and features of a particular roof.

Helpful advice! If desired, the gutters can be made independently, using metal sheets for this, and bending their edges accordingly. For bending right angles, you can use a bending machine.

Do-it-yourself installation of a metal roof drain

Whether it is worth installing a roof drain for the roof with your own hands is a moot point, since on the one hand this is a great opportunity to save money by refusing to call the master. But at the same time, this significantly increases the risk of damage to individual elements of the system or their incorrect installation, which will lead to additional costs. Therefore, it is possible to independently engage in all work only if you have the necessary experience and skills in this area.

Helpful advice! Since the gutter is attached to the roof at a great height, it is extremely important to adhere to safety precautions and the rules for using stepladders, scaffolds and.

Features of independent arrangement of systems of various types

In order for the drainage system to fully function, it is not enough just to fix each component in the place where it should be located. It is important to know in advance what slope the drain should have, as well as the load that the system will be subjected to in case of rain. Thus, the slope of the gutter should be 2.5-3 mm / m, and the number of funnels and pipes should be such that each of them falls at least 10 m of the gutter.

For self-assembly, it is easiest to use a suspended type of construction, which provides for attaching the gutter to special hooks located along the eaves. This option is preferable, since wall gutters, which are used on seam roofs, are the task of professionals who cover the roof of the house.

Although some owners who build on their own also practice self-installation of such systems. But it is important to remember that in this case, the installation of gutters must be carried out before a layer of waterproofing material and the roofing itself are laid on the roof.

The installation of brackets must be started at the edges, observing the required level of inclination. Then, to facilitate the process, a string is pulled between the extreme elements, which allows you to immediately attach all intermediate fasteners without resorting to repeated measurements.

Given the fact that in winter and spring the load on the drain can be very large due to ice and snow, regardless of the features of each system mounting option, it is better that the step between the brackets is small. If this is not possible, then experts recommend taking care of the presence of additional measures to strengthen the gutters.

One of the best ways to reduce the load on your gutters is to install a heating system. In this case, a special cable is laid, which melts the snow and ice, allowing the sediment to flow down.

How to make a gutter for a roof with your own hands: step-by-step instruction

It is possible to proceed with the installation of the system only after all the necessary measurements and calculations have been carried out. Having all the necessary data, the constituent elements of the system must be decomposed on the ground in order to prepare them for interconnection.

First of all, you should take care of the placement of the funnels. To do this, holes are cut in the gutters, the edges of which are bent in such a way as to prevent debris and fallen leaves from catching.

Ideally, to trim the elements of the drainage system, you need to use special scissors that are designed to work with thin metal. This allows you to keep the thin polymer coating intact.

Helpful advice!It is not recommended to use an abrasive disc for cutting holes, as this leads to overheating of the edges, which can cause corrosion. But if you nevertheless used this method, the edges must be protected by covering them with a layer of primer or paint.

The assembly of the structure, and in particular the installation of funnels and their fixation in the gutter, is also carried out on the ground. After that, the already assembled structure is hung on the brackets and securely fastened. At the same stage, it is necessary to fix protective nets inside the drain holes, which serve to prevent foreign objects from entering the system.

With the help of special connectors, corners are attached. However, two separate brackets are still used to hold them, which increase the strength of the structure. At the same time, it is very important to take care of the reliability of each connection in order to prevent possible leakage. To do this, you should follow these simple rules:

  • each next part of the gutter must be nested in the previous one with an overlap of 20-30 mm;

  • special sealants or rubber seals allow additional tightness;
  • the distance from the blind area to the drain elbow should be at least 30 cm.

Considering the fact that rectangular metal roof drains are the most popular, it is worth paying attention to the way the constituent elements are fastened together. For this purpose, special rivets are used. With their help, auxiliary parts of the system are also attached: corners and plugs.

Helpful advice! In order to make sure that the placement of the downpipe is even, you can use a plumb line.

If we do not take into account the features of the site, the table shows that the most economical building is a house built using frame technology.

Do-it-yourself roof drain installation: video-instruction

In order for the water flowing from the roof of the house not to harm the foundation and not to erode the adjacent territory, it is necessary to buy a drain. Metal or plastic is a personal decision of each home owner, which he makes based on the advantages and disadvantages of a particular system. But it is important to understand that no matter what choice is made, high-quality installation is the key to a long service life of the drain and the safety of the drain, roof and facade of the house.

During the existence of civilization, many drainage systems were invented: stone and marble pipes, wooden gutters, concrete and metal gutters. Relatively recently, plastic gutters appeared. But the most common are still metal roof gutters. Let's see why.

Features of PVC gutters

  • plastic does not corrode;
  • does not require maintenance;
  • color stability (the material is dyed in bulk);
  • absolute indifference to chemical factors. Can be used even on the coast.

Advantages over metal systems - less weight and noiselessness.

note

The main disadvantage of PVC is thermal expansion. For compensation, special elements are provided in the system.

Price

  • The cheapest option is galvanized steel without a polymer coating. But it is also the least durable;
  • PVC gutters are on average 20 percent cheaper than steel with a polymer coating. The price of a metal drain depends on the manufacturer, size, type of coating;
  • The most expensive are copper and zinc-titanium systems.

Mounting Features

  • Installation of a metal roof drain is simple: the main elements (gutters, funnels) are equipped with self-locking locks.

  • Installation of PVC systems is carried out by adhesive method using rubber sealing elements. Technically, this is no more difficult than installing a metal drain. Moreover, the weight of plastic elements is less than metal ones.
  • For fixing PVC gutters to the walls, metal fasteners are used.

For which roof?

What to choose - plastic or metal gutters - also depends on the type of roof.

  • For profiled metal roofs, metal systems are usually chosen. Often the same manufacturer, with the same finish. Sometimes they are included in the roofing material kit;

  • PVC is well combined with shingle roofs, as well as with wooden shingle roofs;
  • For an expensive roof made of natural tiles, the best choice is a copper system.

Our work

Types and components of metal gutters

Although each model of a metal drain has its own nuances and distinctive features, the structure as a whole is the same and the components are the same:

  • gutters. They are located in parallel with the roof eaves approximately at the level of the overhang. Rain and melt water comes down here from the slope;
  • corner parts of gutters;
  • plugs for the end parts of the gutters;
  • funnels are drain metal. Located between separate sections of gutters. Water from the gutter through the funnel goes into the pipe;
  • pipes. Oriented vertically, carry water down;
  • pipe elbow, drain elbow - curved parts of the pipe under the funnel and near the ground;
  • pipe tees;
  • mounting brackets. There are some structural differences between wooden and concrete wall brackets;
  • hooks and couplings for gutters;
  • pipe clamps.

In addition to the material of manufacture, gutters vary in size. The two most common types of systems are:

  • small: gutter section 125 mm, pipes 90. Suitable for small cottages;
  • large: 150 and 100 millimeters, respectively. Suitable for a roof with a large area of \u200b\u200bslopes.

In addition to round systems, there are rectangular metal gutters on the market. Their capacity is somewhat larger, but this is not the main property. Rectangular metal drains are an original design element that goes well with facades in modern styles, minimalism and high-tech.

The main manufacturers of metal gutters

One of the most popular products on the market is Lindab metal gutters (Sweden).

Their features:

  • galvanized steel, anti-corrosion coating - plastisol;
  • dozens of color solutions;
  • locking system;
  • suitable for all types of roofs;
  • 15 year warranty, real service life - 45 and more.

The standard sizes of Lindab drains are 125/90, 150/100.

The price of metal roof gutters from this manufacturer:

  • gutter three meters, section 125 - 7 EUR;
  • section 150 - 8.5 EUR;
  • pipe three meters, section 90 - 9 EUR;
  • section 100 - 11 EUR.

In addition to Lindab, metal gutter systems of other well-known brands are on the market:

  • Ruukki (Finland);
  • Rhine Zinc (Rheinzink, Germany)
  • Grand Line (Grand Line, RF);
  • Aqua System (Aquasystem, Russian Federation);
  • Metal Profile (RF), etc.

Installation of metal gutters for the roof

The gutter is placed with a small height difference, from two to five millimeters per meter. A funnel is installed at the lowest point.

The main stages of installing gutters:

1. Installation of funnels.

2. The first bracket is placed at the highest point, the second - at the lowest, near the funnel.

3. A fishing line is pulled between the extreme brackets, the rest are placed along it.

4. Install a gutter on special hooks. The connection of individual sections with funnels is fixed with locks.

5. Corner gutters are placed at the corners.

6. The ends of the gutters are closed with plugs.

7. Connect the pipes to the funnel, from top to bottom. The distance from the vertical pipe to the wall is at least three centimeters. Sections are fastened with clamps.

8. Install the lower pipe bend: it drains the draining water away from the facade. The end of the lower section of the pipe is 30 centimeters from the ground (if there is a water collector, then 15 cm).

In general, the installation of a drain is not difficult, but it requires accuracy and skill.

Drainage system metal - metal gutters!

Metal gutters guarantee optimal protection of the roof, facade and foundation of the house from rain and snow. They are produced using innovative developments from hot-dip galvanized or galvanized steel with a polymer coating. The maximum operating temperature for the installation of a metal gutter system determines the service life of the coating.

Metal gutters are durable and fireproof. Coating the steel sheet with zinc alloy prevents rust, protects against abrasive dust, ice and minor damage. Such drains as metal are suitable for any climatic conditions, they do not deform, do not fade, do not expand when heated. The invisible inner seam of the drain metal pipe guarantees significant tensile strength - this is important in winter when melt water accumulates in the pipes. Ice, growing in size, is able to instantly break plastic gutters, and metal roof gutters endure this kind of impact much longer.

Advantages of metal gutters:

The high strength of the elements of the metal gutter endures crazy loads. The hardness of the gutter construction withstands significant mechanical influences from snow drifts, as well as a long service life, which reaches 50 years! Not susceptibility to variable extreme temperatures only for metal drainage systems. They can be combined with metal roofs, roofing, creating a uniform color contrast.

Metal gutters do not require specialized elements to compensate for linear expansion, since metal systems have a small degree of thermal expansion, unlike plastic gutters. Metal drainage systems are fire-resistant, resistant to corrosion and aggressive environments. With the help of numerous shades, the most complex architectural tasks in the modern design of the roof of the house are solved. For ease of installation, the necessary prefabricated elements are included in the kit, which facilitates the assembly of a metal drain, as well as increased color stability, which does not fade in the sun. Metal drainage systems do not require absolutely no care during operation, the copper drain can boast the same.

Currently, high demands are placed not only on the properties, but also on the appearance of metal gutter systems. When drawing up a design project for a house or roof, you should immediately take into account the desired combination of shades and shapes of the facade with a drain. This will allow the system to harmoniously fit into the overall appearance of the building. You can also make an independent calculation of gutters by clicking on the link.
