Origin of the word "hectare"

The term HECTAR has two roots at once. One of the "hects" comes from the ancient Greek "ἑκατόν", which means " hundred". And the second root is ar».

AR- this is another, so-called, off-system unit for calculating the area, which also represents square, but with side length 10 meters. So its area is:

From here, by the way, comes the more familiar to us and more popular name "ara" - SOTKA.

That is, it turns out that the term HECTAR means "one hundred acres". And this is exactly the same 10 thousand square meters that we have already talked about.

Why is a hectare called "off-system"

If you carefully read the definitions of HECTARE, you could pay attention to the phrase "non-systemic unit of area". By the way, ARA has the same thing. Let's explain what this means.

First of all, it must be said that the use of the term HECTARE began in 1879. Official permission was issued by the International Committee for Weights and Measures.

This is an organization that ensures that the same instruments and quantities are used all over the world when measuring length, weight, time, and so on. Otherwise, there would be a terrible mess.

Just imagine that in France there would be meters and kilometers, and in Russia they would continue to measure the distance in arshins and cubits in the old fashioned way.

So this same International Committee of Weights and Measures in 1879 allowed the use of HECTAR in measuring the area. At the same time, abbreviated designations for this quantity appeared - “ha” and “ha”.

But the permission of the International Committee of Weights and Measures came into conflict with the older and more authoritative SI system of units. It was founded a hundred years earlier (1770) and is a collection of standards for units of measurement of various parameters.

So in the system SI no hectare simply could not exist, since the length (and, accordingly, the area) is responsible METR and its derivatives- millimeter, centimeter, decimeter, kilometer and so on.

But the SI system allows the use of "foreign" units of measurement. They are called " off-system". By the way, a hectare in this list is in a very representative company. The same category includes, for example, minute, hour, day, ton, centner and liter.

How to convert hundreds and square meters to hectares

As we have already said (more than once), one hectare contains 100 acres and 10 thousand square meters.

Accordingly, in order to convert one measure of area into another, it is necessary to carry out very simple calculations.

So, to convert acres to hectares, you need to multiply them by 0.01. And to convert square meters to hectares, you need to multiply by 0.0001.

Example. It is necessary to determine which is more - 20 acres or 500 square meters.

To solve this problem, let's convert both values ​​to hectares. Accordingly, 20 acres is:

20 * 0.01 = 0.2 hectares.

And 500 square meters is:

500 * 0.0001 = 0.05 hectares.

And it turns out that in our example, 20 acres is more than 500 square meters.

It is just as easy to do the reverse calculations. For example, when the value of the area in hectares is known, but it is required to convert it into square meters or acres.
