Roller shutters: the principle of operation. Roller Shutter Garage Doors: Sizes, Prices, Design and Installation Features Important Precautions

1 Mechanical drives

1.1 Spring-inertia mechanism

Mechanical roller shutters, as a rule, are equipped with a spring-inertia mechanism, which is a spring built into the shaft. When installing the roller shutter, the spring is tightened. During use, the spring pulls the web up, thus reducing the weight of the web when lifting.

Since the spring pulls the blade up constantly, it is necessary to block the blade in the closed state. For this, a crossbar lock or manual valves (crossbars) are used.

Roller shutters with a bolt lock

The bolt lock on roller shutters is closed, as a rule, from the street, although control from the inside of the room is possible (two-way lock).

The spring-inertial mechanism with a bolt lock is used on all types of roller shutters (window, door, etc.).

AT window roller shutters spring-inertial mechanism not very convenient if the windows are high and you can’t reach the box with your hand when closing the canvas. In these cases, in order to pull the canvas out of the box, special telescopic extensions are used.

Sometimes window roller shutters with a spring-inertial mechanism are closed from the inside, but this is possible, as a rule, with an overhead type of roller shutter installation, when the roller shutter curtain is 10-20 cm away from the window frame. For more convenient control, the bolt lock is shifted to the left or right (depending on the presence of blind sashes in the window), as well as the bolt lock is lifted into 3 or 4 lamellae.

AT door roller shutters spring-inertial mechanism more convenient and, often, much cheaper than an electric drive, since an automatic drive on door rollers must be equipped with an emergency lifting mechanism and additional control devices (radio receivers, remote controls, tablets), etc.

The spring-inertial mechanism is selected depending on the weight of the canvas. The most powerful mechanism is capable of lifting canvases weighing up to 100 kg. However, we do not recommend using spring-inertial mechanisms on roller shutters. Wide and heavy blades are difficult to control manually and, in such cases, it is advisable to use electric drives.

AT sanitary roller shutters spring it is almost always installed, because other types of mechanical drives have external controls (knobs, cassettes with a cord), which is undesirable in a small room.

The minimum length of the spring determines the minimum width of the sanitary roller shutter. Therefore, a roller shutter with a spring, as a rule, has a width of more than 430mm. With a smaller width of the roller shutter, a cord drive is installed.

1.2 Cord drive

The cord drive is installed, as a rule, on window roller shutters and in cases where it is difficult to control roller shutters from the street (for example, when windows are located high). In such cases, a cassette with a cord is installed indoors next to the window.

Roller shutters are lifted with a cord, blocking the curtain when lowering is carried out by manual bolts or a bolt lock.

The cord drive can be without a handle and with a handle. Conventional drives (without a handle) are installed with a web weight of up to 15 kg. A cord drive with a handle (reducer) is installed on roller shutters with a curtain weight of 15-20 kg.

1.3 Crank drive

Roller shutters on windows with a spring-inertial mechanism and a cord drive require the door leaf to be locked with a lock or manual bolts. The only drive that can be used without blocking is the crank.

Management is carried out from the premises. A capsule is fixed on the wall, to which a knob is connected. Rolleta rises by turning the knob. In the closed state, the roller shutter is blocked by metal plates that connect the curtain to the shaft. The crank drive is more expensive than the electric drive, so it is installed only in cases where it is impossible to connect the wiring to the roller shutter.

Roller shutter drive

2 Electric drive

The electric drive is installed on window, door roller shutters, rolling gates.

Roller shutters for windows with an electric drive are more expensive than roller shutters with a spring-inertial mechanism (the cheapest option for mechanical control) by 2000-2500 rubles.

Roller blinds for electric windows are much more convenient to operate than roller shutters with any kind of manual control. At the same time, roller shutters with an electric drive are often more reliable than mechanical roller shutters. Properly connected actuators will operate smoothly for many years. Mechanical shutters, as a rule, are subjected to jerky loads, which leads to frequent repairs of the curtain or the mechanical drives themselves.

The following drive control options are available:

key switch,

Electric lock (key switch),

radio receiver with remote controls

Control device from "tablets" or cards.

2.1 Rocker switches

The most common option for controlling window roller shutters is a key switch. Rocker switches are of 2 types - with fixation and without fixation. Latching switches are more convenient, because you can press the key and not hold it while the roller shutter is moving. However, we recommend installing momentary switches because they prevent the drive from being energized when the drive is not running (when the draper is finished raising or lowering).

Alutech rocker switch without latching Somfy rocker switch with latching

Switches can be for internal and external wiring. Only one or 2 roller shutters (rotary switch or switch with 4 buttons) can be directly connected to the switch. From one switch it is possible to simultaneously control 3-4 roller shutters, but only through group control devices (1 group device GU4 for 2-4 roller shutters).

With centralized synchronous control of several roller shutters, each roller shutter has its own wire from the group device. However, parallel connection of roller shutters requires a lot of wiring and is not always possible. When parallel connection is impossible or impractical, roller shutters can be connected in series to 1 wire using GU2.15 devices. In this case, the cost of automation increases, but the amount of wiring decreases. With the help of GU2.15 devices, it is possible to implement the most convenient scheme for controlling roller shutters from one central switch and, at the same time, from individual switches for each roller shutter.

2.2 Remotes

Sometimes it is more convenient to control roller shutters from the remote control. Portable remotes can be on 1,2,4,5,16 channels. 1 channel is 1 shutter or several roller shutters, united through radio receivers and group devices.

Four-channel remote control Fifteen-channel remote control

The remote control is not enough to control roller shutters. The remote control signal is transmitted to the radio receiver, which is connected to the roller shutter by a wire. The radio receiver is installed next to the roller shutter in the mounting box (preferably indoors).

3. Emergency manual lifting of roller shutters with electric drive

When installing door roller shutters and roller shutters, the issue of lifting the leaf when the electricity is turned off is relevant. In the absence of power supply, the shaft and, accordingly, the roller shutter curtain remains blocked. You can enter the room or leave the garage only after dismantling the canvas.

Almost always, electric drives with the possibility of manual emergency lifting are installed on door roller shutters and rolling gates. A roller shutter with such a drive can be lifted with a crank.

Such a drive is more expensive than a conventional electric drive by 2-2.5 thousand rubles. rub.

For any car owner, the issue of the safety of the vehicle is important, and hence the arrangement of the garage, in particular, the choice of gates. Roller shutter garage doors are especially popular: sizes, prices and execution options of which can be very diverse. The article will provide technical characteristics of garage roller shutters, prices for structures, recommendations for installing roller shutters with your own hands, video instructions and photo examples.

Types, sizes, prices of garage doors: roller shutters, lifting, swinging and sliding structures

Specialized sites and stores provide customers with a wide range of garage doors - sizes, prices and materials for their manufacture can satisfy the requirements of the most discerning customers.

It is important to remember that properly selected garage doors will protect the vehicle not only from theft and mechanical damage, but also from bad weather conditions, contributing to the creation of a favorable indoor climate and good preservation of car parts.

There are several main types of garage doors:

  • lifting sectional;
  • lifting and turning;
  • swing;
  • retractable;
  • roller shutters (roller shutters, roller shutters).

Overhead sectional and overhead doors

Overhead sectional doors are a solid construction consisting of sandwich panels or separate steel/aluminum (wooden in elite versions) shields connected by hinged hinges. It moves along the guides with the help of a lifting mechanism. Such doors are produced with a width of 2085-3085 mm and a height of 2250-3500 mm.

In the open position, the entire structure is located under the ceiling of the garage, thereby saving space in the room. Among its advantages are a long service life, good heat and sound insulation, resistance to deformation.

The disadvantages of such gates include their rather high cost (the price of standard-sized garage doors starts at 40 thousand rubles). Moreover, due to the complex design, it is worth considering not only the installation costs, but also the additional costs for the constant maintenance of the mechanism parts. You will also have to spend money on paying for a protected area, since overhead sectional doors are not sufficiently resistant to breaking. In addition, due to the presence of a sliding sash, the length of the garage should be at least one and a half times its width.

An up-and-over gate is a one-piece stainless steel shield mounted on a steel frame frame and, as a rule, additionally equipped with an electric drive, so that you can open and close the gate without leaving the car.

When open, they are located under the ceiling at an angle of 90 degrees and do not take up space inside the garage, and the whole shield can be additionally insulated or decorated (walnut, bronze, marble). To do this, you should use only light materials, otherwise you will have to equip the structure with counterweights. The gate reliably protects the car from adverse weather conditions and burglary.

Among the disadvantages, one can mention restrictions on the use - up-and-over doors can only be used in rectangular openings and can be opened no more than 10 times a day. If even a small part of them is damaged, the entire structure will have to be replaced, and the installed gate reduces the height of the doorway by approximately 20 cm. The cost of standard size garage doors is on average from 35 thousand rubles, dimensions vary from 2 to 2.7 m wide and from 1.8 to 6 m in height.

Swing, sliding and rolling gates

Swing garage doors consist of hinged doors attached to rigid posts. These sashes can open both inwards and outwards. One of the wings is often equipped with a gate. The advantages of such gates are their strength and low cost (about 17.5 thousand rubles). They are great for warm garages, but to open the doors, it is necessary to provide a free and flat area at the entrance to the garage. Can be made in any size.

Sliding garage doors are equipped with a special roller system, with the help of which a leaf made of aluminum profiles or a profile pipe (if it is a lattice structure) moves to the side. It is possible to install such gates both outside and inside the garage, but at the same time it is necessary to provide free space for rollback, equal in size to the sash.

The advantages of sliding gates are reliability, durability, saving space in front of the entrance to the garage. Among the disadvantages are the high price (from 58 thousand rubles) and specific requirements for the size of the garage: due to the design features, the garage wall must be at least one and a half times the width of the opening. Available in a variety of sizes with sash widths from 2m.

In recent years, rolling shutters, or roller shutters, which are common in Europe and the USA, have been very popular among garage owners. The dimensions of such gates vary between 150-430 cm (width) and 150-270 cm (height), the cost starts at 7 thousand rubles. and can reach 70 thousand rubles, depending on the configuration and material of manufacture. Their device, advantages and disadvantages should be analyzed in more detail.

How are garage shutters arranged: types, advantages and disadvantages

The device of rolling garage doors is so simple that with basic skills and tools, it is quite possible to install roller shutters with your own hands.

Features of the roller shutter device

Roller shutters are a kind of blinds and consist of basic and additional elements.

The main elements include:

  • sheet of steel or aluminum lamellas (roller profiles);
  • two vertical guide rails;
  • receiving shaft, on which a web of lamellas is wound;
  • a protective rectangular or semicircular box in which the folded canvas is placed;
  • drive (mechanical or electric);
  • locks of crossbar or automatic type;
  • for automatic gates - an unlocking lever that allows you to open them when there is a power outage.

Roller shutters can be equipped with additional elements at the request of the customer. It could be:

  • remote control system;
  • anti-theft and fire alarm;
  • silicone or rubber seals;
  • gate heating system that provides easy opening and closing at low temperatures, etc.

The main types of roller shutters for the garage

There are several classifications of roller shutters:

  • by material;
  • management method;
  • degree of protection;
  • installation method.

Depending on the material, steel and aluminum roller shutters are distinguished. The former are durable, provide good protection against burglary and sound insulation, but they are quite expensive. The latter have good protective and decorative characteristics, are light and reliable, affordable, resistant to moisture and are not afraid of rust.

According to the method of control, roller shutters are automatic and mechanical. Automatic roller shutters are equipped with an electric drive. They are controlled by buttons or a remote control. At the same time, even de-energized gates can be opened with a special key.

For the safety of others, automatic gates are additionally equipped with a motion sensor. The price of garage roller shutters of this type is their significant disadvantage (at least 2000 rubles, plus about 6000 rubles you will have to pay extra for sensors).

Mechanical gates are driven manually. They are much cheaper, but are not suitable for roller shutters weighing more than 30 kg.

According to the degree of protection, groups of roller shutters are distinguished:

  • with a low level of protection (class P1-P2) - provide protection from noise and dust (such roller shutters are also called classic, or plumbing);
  • with an average level of protection (class P3-P5) - thanks to the steel profile, they are more durable and resistant to burglary;
  • with a high level of protection (class P6-P8) - bulletproof armored gates.

According to the installation method, there are:

  • external roller shutters (or overhead) - installed outside the garage, and the box is mounted above the doorway;
  • built-in - mounted directly into the opening, which provides more reliable protection;
  • combined - for installation, it is necessary to provide a separate niche above the opening.

All three methods allow the installation of the box both inside and outside the garage.

Advantages of roller shutters

Roller shutters have many advantages, which explains their widespread use not only in private garages, but also in commercial facilities: shopping centers, warehouses, bank and office premises.

Protective shutters (the price for them will be discussed in more detail below) are compact. They allow you to save space - an average of about 2 m, when compared with swing gates. With a limited amount of land for construction and prices for garages, roller shutter doors will be the best solution.

It is important! Despite the fact that such doors are optimally suited for large and non-standard doorways, there are restrictions on the size of roller shutters. For steel profiles, the door width should not exceed 7 m with a total door area of not more than 49 m², and for aluminum structures - 6 m (maximum door area - up to 14 m²).

Due to the simple design, rolling shutters are easy to use, do not require significant maintenance costs, the purchase of lubricants or paints. Considering how much garage roller shutters cost, this can be considered another bonus. If you have basic skills, you can not only install roller shutters yourself (video instructions clearly show this process), but also repair roller shutters with your own hands.

For example, in case of mechanical damage to the lamellas, it is necessary to remove the cover of the box, lower and dismantle the canvas, and then unfold it for bulkhead and remove the side locks. Next, disconnect the deformed lamellas and install new ones, connecting them to each other with the locking part, attach the end lamella and install the canvas in the guides. Recommendations for the repair of roller shutters and videos of installing roller shutters with your own hands can be easily found on the Internet.

There are other reasons to buy roller shutters for the garage - the price is quite affordable, the roller shutters are resistant to corrosion and durable. Even budget aluminum gates will last at least 10 years. Regardless of the material, they protect the room well from dust and noise, and the insulation reduces heat loss by 20%.

Roller doors are aesthetic. There is a wide variety of colors on the market, from standard white, grey, brown, blue or black to more original shades (ruby red, Irish oak, spruce green, etc.). A rich palette and imitations of various textures allow you to harmoniously fit rolling shutters into any architectural style.

Disadvantages of roller shutters

The web of profiles cannot be opened without first cutting the metal. In addition, metal roller shutters are often additionally equipped with an alarm. Nevertheless, many garage owners prefer to install roller shutters in protected areas. Steel armored gates are considered a more reliable option, but they are expensive.

Roller shutters are best suited for unheated garages, since their design does not retain heat well and lets cold air from the street into the room. Under the influence of low temperatures, individual elements of the gate may become covered with ice, and it will be difficult to open them. This problem can be solved with an anti-icing spray or by installing an expensive gate heating system.

Roller shutter garage doors: sizes, prices and popular manufacturers

The price of roller shutter doors for a garage differs significantly depending on the materials, the complexity of the box, the presence of additional options such as a fire alarm or motion sensor. The most budget option is manually operated aluminum roller shutters, they are affordable for any garage owner, the most expensive are models made of armored steel.

The price of roller shutters for a garage also depends on the size of the garage door. Roller shutters should ideally fit into the doorway, this ensures a smooth running of the leaf and a long service life of the entire structure. For this reason, before placing an order, it is necessary to make the most careful measurements.

Table of standard sizes and estimated prices for roller shutter gates:

Opening width, mmOpening height, mmtype of driveprice, rub.
1500 1500 Mechanical6800
2200 2500 19100
2500 2500 20500
3000 2500 28400
1500 1500 Auto7100
2200 2500 23200
2500 2500 24500
3000 2500 38000
4000 2700 60000
4300 2700 68000

It is interesting! The standard gate width for a motorcycle is from 1.8 m, for a car - from 2.5 m, for an SUV - from 2.8 m.

The price of roller shutters for garage doors depends on the manufacturer. There are three companies among the leaders of the domestic market:

  1. Hormann (Germany) - the high price of roller shutters for the garage of this manufacturer is offset by true German quality and reliability, confirmed by international certificates and a 10-year warranty.
  2. DoorHan (Russia) - thanks to its own production of economy class garage doors. The company is now successfully leading the CIS and Chinese markets.
  3. Alutech (Belarus) is the largest manufacturer of all types of gates and automation, as well as profile systems made of aluminum, which are distinguished by an optimal combination of price and quality.

In the case of roller shutters, the simplicity of their design makes it possible to install roller shutters with your own hands. This does not require specific skills, you just need to have a little experience or find a video of installing roller shutters on the Internet.

Roller shutter installation tools:

  • screwdriver;
  • a hammer;
  • pliers;
  • building level;
  • roulette;
  • wire cutters;
  • drill;
  • set of drills;
  • perforator;
  • rivet gun;
  • scissors for cutting metal;
  • acrylic or silicone sealant;
  • mounting foam;
  • mounting gun;
  • a set of fasteners;
  • screwdrivers;
  • spanners;
  • multimeter to connect the electric drive.

Before you buy a roller shutter gate, you need to take into account many factors: determine the price limit, choose the appropriate material, color, protection level, control method, optimal installation method, as well as carefully measure the garage opening.

Helpful information! To ensure the tightness and easy movement of the roller shutter doors installed on the garage, the difference between the diagonal measurements of the opening should not exceed 5 mm. It is also necessary to check how smooth the sides of the opening are horizontally (this is done using a level) and vertically (using plumb lines). For each meter, no more than 1.5 mm deviation is allowed. In addition, after mounting the box, the space between it and the opening cannot exceed 5 mm.

In general, it is not difficult to install roller shutter gates on the garage with your own hands. It is enough to adhere to a certain algorithm of actions.

Preparatory stage

If the top and side slopes of the garage opening do not meet the above requirements, all irregularities, cracks and chips should be carefully leveled using special linings and building mixtures. On how well this will be done, the entire further progress of the installation of roller shutters with your own hands depends.

Next, prepare the guides. On metal tires at a distance of 50 cm from each other, marks must be applied and through them with a drill drill through holes for fasteners with a diameter of 8 mm. In this case, it is necessary to step back from the edges of the cut of the guide by 10-15 cm. It is recommended to drill the holes themselves a little from the outside. Additionally, holes with a diameter of 11.8 cm are drilled in the upper part of the guides for plugs.

Frame assembly

To assemble the frame, the cover must be attached to the box and a pair of through holes with a diameter of 4.2 mm must be made for installing rivets. After that, it is necessary to mark and drill holes with a diameter of 8 mm to fix the box (on the back side of the box for surface-mounted installation and at the top of the box for built-in installation). In addition, you will need to drill one hole to connect the drive. Next, the box is connected to the side tires.

The assembled structure should be placed in the garage opening and, using the building level, check that the box is located strictly horizontally relative to the upper slope, and the side guides are strictly vertical. After that, along the holes drilled in the frame, marks for fasteners can be applied to the slopes. You should also make a mark for the drive output.

Then the structure is removed, and holes are punched along the marks with a perforator. The diameter of the opening for the drive must be 12 or 16 mm, depending on whether the roller shutters are operated electrically or manually. Dowels are inserted into the punched holes, and a protective spring is inserted into the hole for the drive.

Do-it-yourself roller shutter frame installation

A special protective film should be removed from the back wall of the frame. The frame structure is installed in the prepared opening. At this stage, it is important to make sure that the marks and holes match completely, and also check again with a building level that the guides and the box are not skewed. After that, the structure is securely fixed in the opening with fasteners.

Note! Fasteners must match the load! To fix the frame in a brick, concrete or stone opening, plastic dowels and steel anchors from 3 cm are used, for openings with voids - anchors from 6 cm, for metal openings - self-tapping screws, and for openings made of wood - screws and studs.

All fasteners must be tightened evenly. Otherwise, during operation, the structure may warp, as a result, the roller shutters will go very tight, a characteristic rattle will appear. They will help you avoid mistakes and install the roller shutters yourself - video and photo recommendations.

Installation of control elements and door leaf

Mechanical control of roller shutters is carried out using a special lever. For outdoor installation (it is most suitable for installing a roller shutter with your own hands), markings are made inside the room, holes are drilled along it and guides and a tape layer are attached to the opening. Installation of electrical control elements is carried out according to the scheme attached by the manufacturer (if you have any questions at this stage, it is best to seek advice from reference books or at least familiarize yourself with the numerous roller shutter installation videos).

Next, the canvas is mounted. Crossbars (automatic locks) are attached to the last lamella of the canvas. The shaft is wrapped with a sheet, the edges of the sheet are installed in the grooves of the guides, traction springs are mounted in the upper part of the sheet and fixed in the drilled holes of the shaft. To adjust the web in the extreme lower and upper positions, restrictive stoppers are installed. They connect controls and check how all elements and mechanisms work. After that, remove the protective film from the outside of the roller shutters. Plugs and gaps are installed and sealed, the seams are sealed with mounting foam.

Acting in accordance with this instruction, it is quite easy to carry out the installation of rolling shutters on your own. For more detailed information, you can find numerous videos on the Internet - how to install a roller shutter gate yourself and even how to make a roller shutter with your own hands.

If the electricity was accidentally turned off in the house, the owner may suddenly become a hostage to the current situation - the inability to open electric shutters that operate exclusively from the switch. Due to their weight, it is almost impossible to lift the roller shutter blade mechanically in this situation.
Despite the recommendations of manufacturers, which deliberately remind of the importance of installing additional batteries that can support power in order to be able to raise or lower the canvas, most consumers do not attach any importance to this. Thus, in a difficult unforeseen situation, and this can be both a fire and the aggression of criminals who have entered the house, you will not be able to leave the room through a window or door that is closed with roller shutters.

It is important to remember the need to install emergency shutter opening devices, and you need to take care of this already at the installation stage in order to avoid unpleasant consequences in the event of a power outage. As a rule, preference is given to the cardan version of the device. Such a drive, due to its features, is able to lift more weight than other drives, say cord or tape. If the control unit is equipped with a removable handle, you have the option to install it outside the house, while taking the handle with you and preventing unauthorized entry. If the handle is non-removable, then we recommend installing the box indoors.

How to open roller shutters manually?

If there is no backup manual drive, you will face reasonable, but solvable difficulties, the main of which is the weight of the roller shutter leaf, which sometimes reaches 40 kg. In order to manually open the roller shutters, it is necessary to disconnect the switches from the box, which automatically unlocks the curtain. If its weight is not too heavy, you can lift the canvas yourself.

Important Precautions

Please note that all the time you open the roller shutters, they were disconnected from the power supply. Check that the key is in the off position. Do not stand under the canvas while it is opening. Take a position next to the roller shutters, prudently protecting yourself from possible injuries.

Electric shutters - automatic roller shutters or operated by a continuous switch - can turn into an insurmountable barrier not only for an intruder, but also for the owner of a house or apartment. For example, in the event of a power outage in the house: it is almost impossible to lift a frozen canvas weighing over fifty kilograms (and more often, since electric drives are usually installed on heavy roller shutters).

Although roller shutter manufacturers advise installing backup batteries for the electric drive, the charge of which is enough to open or close the curtain, many people neglect this: and it turns out that in a critical situation (fire, threat to life from intruders who entered the house) get out through a window or door, closed with a roller shutter, it will not work.

In order for a person to be able to open electric roller shutters blocked as a result of a power outage, additional emergency opening devices are installed on them. Although the choice of mechanical emergency drives is quite large, cardan options are most often offered. Due to the design features, the cardan drive allows you to lift much more weight than others - tape or cord mechanisms. The cardan control unit is installed indoors. It is equipped with a conventional non-removable or removable handle. In the latter case, it is also possible to mount the control box outside the house: the handle is simply removed and carried away by the owner, which eliminates - albeit not 100% - the possibility of unauthorized manual opening.

If there is no backup manual drive

The situation in this case is complicated, but also quite solvable: however, with a canvas weight of up to 30-40 kilograms. For manual opening, it is necessary to get to the box and carefully disconnect the limit switches from the structure. The canvas unlocked in this way, if it is not too heavy, is easy to lift - the built-in spring-inertia mechanism can serve, in this case, a good service.

Precautionary measures

It is necessary to ensure that during the entire time that you spend on manually opening the roller shutter, it is disconnected from the power supply: the electronic key must be in the “Off” position. When lifting the canvas, you need to stand next to it, and not under it - then the risk of injury is minimal.

Roller shutters are a durable screen consisting of narrow transverse slats that look like traditional horizontal blinds. It performs a protective function, closing various openings from unauthorized entry. In working condition, the structure completely covers the opening. If it is necessary to open it, it is enough to use a special mechanism and the protection will twist into a compact roller shutter. In the lowered state, the screen is held by a special lock, so it cannot be moved away without a key.

Advantages of roller shutters

The advantages of using such protection include:

  • High efficiency in countering illegal entry.
  • Providing heat and sound insulation.
  • Obstruction to the penetration of sunlight.
  • Neat appearance.
  • Simple folding mechanism.

The protection efficiency of this design is comparable to the grille, but when assembled, it does not block the view and does not create obstacles for penetration through the openings. This is especially important if the device is installed on a door or window with the possibility of opening the sash.

Where are roller shutters used?

Scope of use rollt is practically not limited. They are installed to provide protection:

  • doors.
  • windows.
  • Gate.
  • Trade showcases.

This technical solution is suitable for installation in commercial premises such as shops, banks, etc. They are often placed on private houses and summer cottages, as well as the windows of apartments on the ground floors. Relatively recently, the use of roller shutters began to close plumbing niches, where pipeline communications and meters are located. To provide access to such cavities, it is possible to use small inspection hatches, but they are compact in size, and therefore limit the convenience of work that can be carried out in a niche. Using roller shutters to close communications, you can raise them at any time and get full access. Of course, they do not always fit perfectly into the interior of the bathroom, but due to their functionality, they completely cover this drawback. Plumbing screens have a decorative function and are not intended to provide intrusion protection, since this is not necessary.

Perforated shutters have been developed especially for financial institutions, which makes the screens translucent. Such designs belong to a higher price segment. Usually they are used in premises where it is required to provide reliable protection with the possibility of inspecting a closed opening. In this case, access inside is prevented, but the guard on duty will always be able to visually assess whether there is an outsider in the protected area.

Device

The design of roller shutters is quite simple. They consist of the following parts:

  • Cloths.
  • Protective box.
  • Vala.
  • Guide.

The canvas is a screen consisting of a set of horizontal lamellas tightly pressed against each other. They are not rigidly interconnected, so they can be rolled into a roller shutter. Despite the fact that the lamellae are not fixed, they have strong adhesion to each other, so it is rather difficult to destroy the screen even with the use of a crowbar.

The structure includes a protective box. It has small dimensions and is placed in the upper part of the opening. Inside it is a shaft, on which the roller shutter is wound. Its presence protects the device from contamination and the development of corrosion processes at the time the screen is in a twisted form.

Roller shutter guides are two plates with special slots, which are located on the sides of the opening. On them, as on rails, the screen moves. Their presence prevents the possibility of its bending. The guides also provide uniform movement when twisting and lowering.

Control types

Roller blinds differ among themselves and in the way of control. According to this criterion, they are of two types:

  • Manual.
  • Automatic.
Manual control

Such roller shutters are equipped with a special mechanism that works as a result of the use of physical force. It is necessary to go directly to the opening and use a special tape or crank drive to wind the screen onto the axis. This is a very reliable method that does not require any difficulties in production, so this technical solution is accompanied by minimal costs.

Automatic control

More expensive are automatic shutters. When choosing in their favor, you do not need to make any physical effort. It is enough to press a stationary button located on the wall or in another convenient place. The mechanism will work from the electric drive and the roller shutters will close or open.

A remote control option is also available. Such a technical solution is more expensive, so it is not always appropriate. To operate the mechanism, it is necessary to connect to the mains. In the event that the power supply fails, a battery supply may be provided, allowing a few more cycles to be triggered. For cheaper automatic devices, manual control is provided in case of a power failure. A huge advantage of using electric roller shutters is the possibility of opening them simultaneously. It is enough to press the button once and all openings will be released from the screen. In the same case, if manual control is used, then each window and door requires special attention.

As for remote control, it can work on several technologies. If a remote control with an infrared transmitter is used, then in order to operate the mechanism, it is necessary to give a command in the immediate vicinity of the shutters, pointing the remote control directly at the receiving sensor. This technology is completely identical to that used on TV remote controls. More convenient, but also expensive, is radio control. In this case, commands are transmitted even through walls, and the remote control does not need to be directed to the roller shutter.

Mounting methods

There are several possible ways to install roller shutters on the opening. Conventionally, they can be divided into three types:

  • Outer.
  • Interior.
  • Combined.

Holding outdoor installation is the simplest and does not require special preparation of the opening. The roller shutter box is simply screwed with anchor bolts to the facade wall directly above the opening. Guide rails are installed on the sides, after which the structure can be operated. Everything looks pretty neat, and most importantly, installation takes a minimum of time. It should be noted that this method is not the most reliable. With a crowbar at hand, an attacker can hit one of the guides and pull it out of the wall. Then the screen can be pushed back like an ordinary curtain or blinds. Despite this disadvantage, this method is very popular, since the loss of useful space inside the room is excluded. The entire structure is completely outside.

Much more reliable internal installation. In this case, work is carried out according to a similar technology as for outdoor installation, but already indoors from the inside of the opening. This method is far from ideal, as it spoils the interior. A box with a twisted roller shutter is on the wall, so they look out of place. With this method of installation, hacking is more difficult. The advantages of this technical solution include the location of the mechanism in a warm room and the absence of contact with dampness. Thanks to this, the mechanism will work equally effectively both in summer and in winter. Those who have encountered difficulty in opening outdoor roller shutters when they are icy are happy to switch to indoor installation, despite certain interior disadvantages of such a solution.

A good alternative is combined installation. In this case, the box is located inside the opening. This requires a more complex setup. The disadvantage of this solution is the reduction in the actual height of the opening by 10-15 cm, which depends on the parameters of the box. For doors, this is not a problem, but in the case of a window, the efficiency of light penetration is lost. To solve this problem, sometimes a combined installation is carried out, preparing a special niche at the top of the opening, hiding it in the ceiling.

Manufacturing materials

Roller shutters can be made from:

  • Become.
  • aluminum.
  • Plastic.
  • Wood.

Steel lamellas are the most reliable. They are made of galvanized or painted profile. They are very common due to their strength and relatively inexpensive cost. There are also armored screens, in which the lamellas are made of thicker metal. They are installed in banks and other financial institutions where there is a high risk of hacking and penetration.

Also found aluminum screens. Such lamellas are inferior in strength to steel ones, but weigh much less.

Plastic roller shutters are also quite popular. They are used on small window openings, which often, even if the protection is damaged, will still not allow an intruder to penetrate due to their small dimensions. Also, plastic lamellas are suitable for installation in a bathroom to close a niche with communications.

Wooden screens are very rare. They look beautiful and are often used not so much to protect against burglary, but from the penetration of sunlight. They have good sound insulation, so they can be used in city apartments, the windows of which overlook busy streets.
