How to prepare plastic windows for the winter. How to adjust plastic windows for "winter" mode: advice from professionals. Why do you need to adjust the modes of plastic windows

Plastic windows save from street noise, provide a comfortable air temperature in an apartment, a private house. However, once installed, they require . Adjustment of locking mechanisms is needed every off-season - only then double-glazed windows will fulfill their task. Today's article will tell you how to switch windows to winter mode, what it is for when such actions are performed. Along the way, it is worth understanding the features of the locking mechanisms, the device, and some of the nuances of functioning. Photo and video instructions will help us, explaining in detail the algorithm of the actions performed.

Immediately make a reservation that with a lack of knowledge and experience, our editors recommend contacting professionals in their field. Specialists of specialized firms will advise on all possible issues and offer the most advantageous options for solving problems. Well, for those who still want to deal with this issue on their own - a little help.

Modern plastic windows are regulated by the pressure force of the sashes in three modes:

  • summer- the window sash is pressed weakly. This provides air circulation in the room, realizing. Wear of sealing rubber bands is minimal;
  • winter mode on plastic windows provides a tight clamp. There is no air circulation, which ensures the preservation of heat in the home. The load on the sealing gum is maximum;
  • standard- the average position of the eccentrics (trunnions). More often, installers leave locking mechanisms in this position. The only difference is that professionals who value their reputation show the owner how to switch double-glazed windows to winter or summer mode, and negligent ones (who, unfortunately, are the majority) do not bother to explain. Standard mode is for the off-season.

Why switch the modes of plastic windows

It is enough not to switch the “winter-summer” mode on plastic windows for 2-3 years, so that after, even with the right adjustments, it starts to blow from under the windowsill or balcony door. Consider the problems that arise with incorrect settings.

The first is a violation of the microclimate of the room. Excessive contributes to the formation of condensation on frames, double-glazed windows and walls, which leads to mold. "Summer" settings in winter lead to heat loss, a need arises. The result is increased gas bills or.

Important! The use of the winter position of plastic windows in the warm season will lead to rapid wear of the seals. The result is the futility of any subsequent adjustments. The way out is to replace the rubber seals, which are not cheap.

Switching modes of plastic windows: advantages and disadvantages

Window adjustment flaws can only occur if the home master does the wrong thing. If everything is done correctly, switching modes will only benefit. Let's see in what cases it is justified.

Timely switching will extend the life of windows, even if these actions have not been performed for some time. Drafts in winter or dust ingress in summer are treated by switching the fittings to winter mode. Let not for long, but for a year or two will be delayed. Sagging loops are eliminated in the same way. Replacing accessories is already an extreme measure.

Good to know! Incorrectly set modes can cause the window or door to jam separately in the ventilation position or together with the opening.

Determination of the possibility of changing the seasonal regimes of plastic windows

Not all models of plastic windows have the ability to change modes. To understand if it is present on your double-glazed windows, you need to look at the valves. The eccentric located in the middle can be oval or in the center it will have a hole for an asterisk or a hexagon. This indicates the presence of a winter regime on plastic windows. The photos below will help the reader deal with this issue.

The algorithm of actions when adjusting windows with different trunnions is identical, but their position may differ. Let's try to understand in detail the types of eccentrics.

Forms of escentrics and nuances of mode translation

The oval trunnion after installation is more often located diagonally - this is the standard position, the middle between winter and summer. The horizontal position indicates winter mode, and the vertical position indicates summer mode.

If the stop valve eccentric is round (for a hexagon), then its positions are as follows. Extended towards the street - winter, located in the center - standard, recessed towards the apartment - summer.

The third option is a round hex trunnion that does not move when turning. In this case, there is a risk on it, which indicates the correct position. To make it easier to understand, we offer you to view pictures of how to switch windows to winter mode.

How to switch windows to winter mode: preparation of double-glazed windows

Before, preparatory work should be done. The first thing to do is to remove the grease from the locking mechanism assemblies with a rag so that dirt and dust do not get inside when adjusting. After all the work done, the mechanism is lubricated again.

Very important! The rubber frame seal should be treated before the cold weather. You can do this with a lubricant (based on silicone or glycerin), but it is better to use silicone spray, which is sold in all hardware and automotive stores.

How and when plastic windows are switched to winter mode

Experts recommend switching locking mechanisms from summer to winter only in extreme cases, when drafts become sensitive. However, this is only suitable for warm climatic zones of Russia. Switching at the beginning of the heating season will be optimal.

A misted double-glazed window or a slight appearance of ice on it from the inside can also indicate the need for adjustment.

Helpful information! Before switching windows to winter mode, you should carefully inspect the rubber seal. Perhaps the adjustment of the sash hardware is correct, and the seal is cracked or torn. In this case, you must definitely replace it. For one winter, you can buy cheap seals, but they do not last more than a season.

Other options for adjusting plastic window frames

Having figured out how to switch windows to winter mode with a hexagon, screwdriver or pliers, you can move on to the rest. Indeed, over time, the frame can lead, and one side will fit more tightly than the other, which is unacceptable. This creates a load on the window fittings and contributes to the appearance of drafts.

The sash is adjusted vertically and horizontally from the bottom hinge. We remove the protective plastic cover and find a screw with a hexagon hole located on top. Turning the screw clockwise will raise the frame. By turning counterclockwise, we lower the glass unit. In order to move the sash away from the frame or, on the contrary, to set it closer, we use the screw located on the side at the bottom of the hinge.

Important! If all adjustments are made correctly, and the problems of drafts have not disappeared, this indicates wear on the seals, a factory defect in the frame, or incorrect installation of the sashes. We check the sealing gum, and if they are normal, we file a claim with the installer. That is why it is important to make adjustments in the first year of operation - there remains the possibility of warranty repair, and sometimes replacement.

Article

Now almost every apartment or private house is worth. This greatly simplifies people's lives, because metal-plastic structures are very durable, they are more convenient to use, they are more reliable, and their service life is much longer than that of wooden ones. But these advantages do not negate the need for special care, which prolong operating time. Structures, insulate, repair, etc. Preparing plastic windows for winter is an important point in operation.

When it gets cold outside, it is important to think about how to adjust plastic windows for the winter. Proper preparation is not difficult, but very important. If you do not perform a few simple manipulations, then the euro windows will not perform the functions declared by the manufacturer.

How to prepare double-glazed windows for winter

To prolong the life of the mechanism, needs proper care pollution prevention. It's important to know how . Before each change of season, the structure must be thoroughly washed with a regular sponge and a gentle detergent.

The glass itself is cleaned, as well as slopes, profiles, sashes, window sills - that is, all structural elements on both sides. Be sure to clean the drainage channels, otherwise they will accumulate water.

Leak test

To check the tightness between the frame and the sash paper is inserted. You need to pull on it, checking the tension. When the sheet comes out easily, the regulation of the sash clamping mechanism is required.

Important! Please note that the tension of the sheet depends on the material of the seal.

Rubber will hold it tighter than silicone as they have different coefficients of friction.

To conduct an additional check, you can smear around the perimeter of the double-glazed window soapy water.

Bubbles will appear on the problem area due to the passing air flow.

If the seal allows noise and cold to pass through, it is most likely that it has deteriorated and needs to be replaced or treated with silicone grease.

Dirt cleaning and lubrication

Do-it-yourself insulation of plastic windows for the winter involves inspecting the condition of the fittings. It should be thoroughly cleaned of dirt, dust, mixed with old grease.

When all the mechanisms are clean, you need to re-apply the lubricant composition - purchase a special one for metal-plastic structures or use grease.

It is forbidden to use for fittings, edible oils - they dry quickly and become a sticky composition, rendering the mechanism unusable.

Adjustment of plastic windows for the winter

Before the onset of the cold season, plastic structures are inspected and the winter regime is adjusted.

After installation of the double-glazed window, they are exposed standard criteria for sash locking, the positions are adjusted according to the season to enhance functionality. Installers must explain to owners how to prepare plastic windows for winter and summer.

But it is precisely seasonal adjustment that is most often forgotten, the sash remains in neutral mode. The owners simply do not know how to tighten plastic windows. This over time provokes the following consequences:

  • drafts around the perimeter of the sash;
  • summer mode in winter does not provide clamping of the locking mechanism, provoking heat loss in room;
  • the constant setting of the winter mode provokes rapid wear sashes;
  • the lack of seasonal adjustment makes the air dry, condensation and even mold can form.

Adjustment methods

Window models may vary in fittings, thickness and strength of double-glazed windows. But there are some general principles on how to tighten plastic windows.

Setting up the entire rule is not that difficult. Before changing the mode, it is required to check the double-glazed window so that it has a special adjusting device.

As a rule, these are eccentric pins, they are installed in accordance with the location sash pressing force.

Pins differ in appearance for different window construction companies. But everyone must have an adjustment function. Translation is carried out using a 4 mm hexagon or an asterisk.

There is a risk on the edge of the eccentric - it points to set mode. By default, it is placed up - the neutral position. It should be changed according to the time of year.

Vertical and horizontal adjustment

  1. To remove a slight bevel and frame shift, it is required horizontal adjustment. It is made with the help of the upper and lower loops. It has holes for a hexagon. Lower - allows you to adjust the window from the outside and from the inside (that is, closed and open). As the key is rotated to the right, the sash rises. If you turn it to the left, the lower part on the opposite side of the sash drops. The same actions are carried out with the hinge at the top, but only with the sash open. The shift should be no more than 2 mm.
  2. Plastic structures can be adjusted and vertically- using the lower hinged loop. First, remove the plug - so that the hexagon has free access to the loop. The sash rises when rotated to the right, lowers when rotated to the left. The range is no more than 2 mm.

Setting the bottom corner position

If the PVC does not close tightly from below, then the sash should be moved with the lower hinge

There is also a second adjustment screw on the hinge - for this, the sash is placed on ventilation, a decorative trim is removed from it, under which there will be a recess for a 4 mm hexagon. When turning clockwise, the sash rises, and against it, it falls.

Adjustment of the degree of pressing of the shutters

How to check the degree of pressing has already been described above. Now you need to properly adjust it. This is done with the help of eccentrics located around the perimeter of the fittings.

This is how PVC is adjusted in the winter. You can set it up yourself, it will not cause difficulties.

If the eccentric is moved clockwise, then the sash will press closer to the frame. If it's the other way around, then less.

On the eccentric there is a small strip, it will allow you to determine the pressing force. In summer, it is better to loosen the pressure, but setting up plastic windows for the winter involves tightening to limit the supply of cold air.

How to seal plastic windows

Rubber seals help to get a tighter fit of the parts of the window structure. It is necessary to constantly maintain the cleanliness of the seal, make sure that it does not appear to me cracks or holes. It is easy to clean it with an ordinary dry sponge or cloth, then grease it to prevent the formation of cracks.

In the case when the sealant has completely lost its elasticity, a large number of cracks have formed on it - in order to prepare plastic windows for winter, need to replace it. If this is not done, the design will begin to let air in from the street, and will not protect against cold, noise and dust.

Replace seal you can follow the instructions below:

  1. Open the sash, remove the old seal.
  2. Treat grooves, clean out dirt, small debris.
  3. Insert a new seal, starting from the top corner. It should be well fixed around the perimeter.
  4. No need to pull the rubber, otherwise the corners will not match.

In order to properly insulate plastic windows for the winter with your own hands, you do not need to turn the eccentrics to the maximum when replacing the seal. This will provoke a rapid loss of elasticity of the new rubber.

How to close plastic windows for the winter

If PVC is classified as adjustable, that is, the trunnion has hex socket- so you can switch to winter mode. It's easy to close for the winter:

  1. Raise the hardware roller.
  2. Hexagon adjust the clamp.
  3. Lower the roller into place.
  4. Turn the roller with the risk in the direction of offset.
  5. This should be done with every video.

Sometimes, after manipulation, the fastening of the handle of the structure weakens. To fix this problem, turn the plastic plate next to the handle 90 degrees, then tighten the screws.

If the handle is difficult to turn, lubricate the mechanism special oil.

Do-it-yourself window insulation

Setting up plastic windows in the winter involves replacing elements that have stopped working correctly.

Bead replacement

When the air leak is localized next to the glazing bead, it should be changed. Do it like this:

  • With a narrow spatula or a thin knife, the glazing bead is hooked and pulled out.
  • The new one is sized.
  • The new glazing bead is put in place, with a rubber mallet, lightly tapped into the groove.

A new glazing bead is inexpensive: only 100 - 200 rubles. but this detail is very important, it is she who is responsible for getting street air into the room.

Replacing the fixing pad

During operation, the pad loses elasticity due to frequent and sudden changes in temperature. You can replace it like this:

  1. Remove staples.
  2. Pull out the linings.
  3. Carry out the dismantling of the double-glazed window.
  4. Remove the old tape and insert a new one.
  5. Reassemble all the elements of the structure.

Sealing seams with thermal insulation materials

Another effective method of insulating window structures is sealing seams and joints with a special one.

If installed incorrectly, this is the only way to keep the heat in the room in winter.

The main thing is to choose the right way to insulate plastic structures.

In the future, this can play a decisive role in the question of whether it will blow from the windows in winter.

It is possible to insulate the structure for preparing plastic windows for winter such materials:

  • - affordable, fast application, but begins to break down due to temperature changes and under the influence of ultraviolet radiation;
  • mineral wool is a refractory material, it is environmentally friendly, it is good to insulate a window sill or big gaps.
  • silicone sealant is a reliable material and affordable, but it does not have very good thermal insulation;
  • a special film - transparent, a double-glazed window is glued on us and helps to effectively retain heat;
  • polystyrene - the most affordable material, they close up seams on the slopes;
  • construction tape - glued on top of the sealant, foam, to improve the properties of thermal insulation;
  • warm mixes - used to seal joints and seams on the outside.

Note! If there are even small gaps, it is better to insulate plastic windows for the winter in any of the indicated ways.

Conclusion

The problems described in the article appear if installed incorrectly metal-plastic construction or with too long operation - more than 10 years. Installers during installation must explain the properties of PVC construction and teach owners how to use it in different modes.

Salute to all! Winter is coming, again a flurry of calls will begin from customers who are blowing through the window, who need to switch the fittings to winter mode.

Therefore, as they say, prepare the sleigh in the summer. I dashed off an article for you about preparing windows for winter. I hope it will be useful.

There are many principles for choosing the right windows and no less important aspects of their use. Let's take a look at the most common ones.

When buying window fittings, we do not think at all about the intricacies of the operation of these structures and the features of functioning at different times of the year.

Often, when installing windows in the summer, buyers are faced with the problem of blowing plastic windows in the cold, completely unaware that these structures have a summer and winter mode of use.

The winter mode of plastic windows is designed to ensure that the sashes fit snugly against the window frame. The mode of plastic windows affects the preservation of heat in the room in the cold.

Quite often, the ventilation of a plastic window from the winter mode can be confused with the regulation of fittings for the winter period, however, these are two completely different window abilities.

When it comes to the tightness of the sash adjoining, this is the mode that protects your apartment from excessive blowing of plastic windows.

When it is necessary to ventilate the room, flow valves are used. Windows can be switched to winter mode by a special master. With some skill, you can do it yourself.

The summer mode of plastic windows is different in that the sash does not adjoin so tightly. Thus, it becomes possible to constantly supply free air to the apartment due to micro-ventilation.

There is a classic position - the mode of the middle adjoining of the sash to the frame, when the eccentrics or trunnions are located in the middle position. A double-glazed window in this mode performs its functions equally well in all seasons and ensures adequate sealing.

By changing the window modes, you can not only avoid drafts in the apartment, but also extend the life of the structure. In winter, the material becomes more compressed, and in hot weather it returns to its original position or expands. Setting the window fittings in the right way reduces the wear threshold of the seal and fasteners.

One of the leaders in the production of plastic windows, which provide for winter and summer operation, is Rehau. The company was founded over 70 years ago.

During its existence, the company has grown to a well-known brand with 170 branches around the world. Rehau is the main partner of Porsche, Volkswagen, BMW and Audi. The company manufactures parts and systems from polymers for these concerns.

Rehau's scope of work is focused on the development and implementation of not only plastic windows, but also car body systems, ventilation equipment, seals for cars, modular battery systems for electric car batteries.

The installation of Rehau plastic windows will provide the room with everything necessary for the unimpeded penetration of daylight, as well as protect it from city noise and cold.

But how to transfer plastic windows to winter mode on your own? Let's consider this question in more detail.

We translate windows into winter mode correctly

Switching windows to winter mode in autumn is an opportunity to save on heating. It is possible not to switch windows to another mode while maintaining the good qualities of the seal. When spring arrives, switch your windows to summer mode.

Due to the correct adjustment and reduction of the load traction on the window seal, the windows will last longer.

You can switch the window fittings using the eccentrics (pins) intended for this, which are located on the side of the sash.

If the eccentrics have sockets for a hex wrench, sprockets, screwdrivers, or oval-shaped eccentrics, then this design is capable of transitioning to some kind of window mode.

Eccentrics in their structure can be round or oval with openings for hexagons. To switch the window to cold mode, all eccentrics must be adjusted.

It is not difficult to switch plastic windows to winter mode. It is important to remember that incorrect adjustment can adversely affect the windows. Schematically, the process is as follows.

  1. First, to switch the mode of plastic windows, you need to take a hexagon to tighten the sash.
  2. When you open the window, a rounded pin will be visible from the end of the door. The pattern located on the trunnion in most cases is directed upwards. This indicates that an intermediate window mode has been set between winter and summer.
  3. The hexagon must be inserted into the central hole of the pin and turned at a right angle in the direction of the seal. Now the adjustment of the notch on the trunnion should look at the seal.
  4. It should be noted that the majority of windows have more than one trunnion located over the area of the sash. All trunnions must be switched to winter mode to avoid blowing through.
  5. To evaluate the work, insert a piece of paper between the frame and the sash. Next, see how easy or difficult you can get the paper out of the window. In this way, you can understand the quality of the pressure and accurately switch the window to winter mode.

Important! During the operation of the fittings, having noticed blowing with the sash closed, you should perform an adjustment - transferring the structure to winter mode. But this mode can significantly wear out the rubber seal of plastic windows. Therefore, you should not tighten the eccentrics too much, because due to such an adjustment, the trunnions and the window frame will fail much faster.

When summer comes, switch the windows to summer mode. Using the wrong mode will soon ruin and age the seal.

Plastic windows can be switched from winter mode by inserting the hexagon into the eccentric and turning it clockwise. Remember, the life of the window depends only on your correct adjustment and prudent use.

Standard, summer and winter modes of plastic windows

The standard mode assumes the middle position of pressing the sash. This means that the eccentric will be located in the middle.

The window structure installed in this mode, in most cases, is able to work effectively both in winter and in summer.

This ensures the optimum pressure level of the sealing material.

In winter mode, windows are characterized by a tighter fit of the sash to the frame. Due to this, in the cold season, metal-plastic structures effectively retain heat, keeping it indoors.

Summer mode is characterized by a less dense fixation of the sash. In this position, air currents circulate freely between the environment and the room. In other words, the effect of micro-ventilation is provided, due to which optimal microclimatic conditions are maintained in the heat.

Note! Using the summer mode allows you to weaken the sashes as much as possible, which has a positive effect on the condition of metal-plastic windows that have survived a long winter. At the same time, it remains possible to protect the premises from dirt, dust and heat.

Why is it necessary to adjust plastic windows for summer and winter mode

The transition from one mode to another allows you to keep the window structure in a functional state and extend its service life. Adjustment involves changing the degree of fit of the sash to the window frame.

In the winter season, the insulation material shrinks, and in the summer it expands. It, like all fasteners, can be protected from wear by adjusting plastic windows, videos and photographs with instructions describing how this can be done, there is enough on the net.

Sometimes during operation there is a displacement of the sash. When it is warm outside, this does not cause inconvenience, but in winter, because of this, the temperature in the room can drop significantly.

If this happens, you should check the condition of the frame. During the installation of metal-plastic windows, the craftsmen check the position of the sashes in each of the modes, as well as the absence of gaps between the parts. However, perfectly executed installation is not a guarantee that the sashes will not disperse over time.

If windows are installed in early spring or winter, the structures are exposed to external influences:

  • The outside temperature is rising.
  • Under the influence of climate change, plastic begins to expand.
  • The outside temperature is dropping.
  • Under the influence of temperature changes, the plastic decreases in volume, while it is not always able to take its original shape.

Similar processes occur if windows are installed in the summer. But first, the material contracts as temperatures drop, and then expands. At the same time, it is impossible to avoid changes in the technical characteristics of the product, therefore gaps often appear in the windows.

The need to transfer plastic windows to winter mode or summer mode may be due not only to the seasonal transition, but also to a number of other reasons:

  • Drafts from the window, carrying frosty air in winter and dust in summer.
  • Sagging sashes due to worn hinges.
  • Jamming of the sash in the ventilation mode.

Please note! During the operation of windows, the sealing material is subject to severe wear. Therefore, it is very important to timely carry out the adjustment of plastic windows with your own hands when switching to winter / summer modes.

How to check the possibility of adjusting plastic windows for the winter

The possibility of switching between summer and winter modes is provided by special fittings. The availability of this function depends on the class of these parts.

There are several types of accessories:

  • Budget fittings - parts that have the lowest cost and are solely responsible for opening and closing the window structure.
  • Standard accessories - the package contains standard and anti-burglary parts that allow you to prepare the window structure for summer or winter.
  • Specialized fittings - includes anti-burglary and specialized parts that allow you to transfer plastic windows to winter or summer mode.

Most modern manufacturers produce standard and specialized fittings with the function of switching from one mode to another.

Most popular brands:

  • Siegenia Aubi;
  • Maco;
  • Roto.

During installation, the user is not always provided with detailed information about the functionality of the fittings. To find out if the transition between modes is provided for in the window structure, you should examine the appearance and marking of the configuration, namely, the trunnions.

An eccentric or trunnion is one of the elements of the furniture filling, which allows you to adjust the degree of pressing the sash to the frame of the metal-plastic window. This part is located on the side.

If the trunnion contains special holes designed for the key, then the design has an adjustment function. This can be easily seen even in the photo of plastic windows, of which there are many on the net.

As a rule, the marking is marked with the image of a hexagon, screwdriver or asterisk. In some cases, the regulating part has an oval shape, which also indicates that the window can be operated in different modes.

How to determine which mode of plastic windows is set: winter or summer

Before adjusting plastic windows for the winter, it is necessary to establish in what position the fittings are installed. There are several ways to help you find out how the sash is placed. In each case, the technique depends on the shape of the trunnion.

How to determine the winter mode of plastic windows before setting up the fittings:

  • A sheet of paper is taken.
  • It is placed between the sash and the window frame so that one of the ends remains on the side of the room.
  • The window closes.
  • Then you should pull the sheet towards you.
  • If the paper passes easily, then the structure is set to operate in summer mode. Otherwise, it will break.

Helpful advice! Manufacturers of metal-plastic structures advise operating windows in summer mode all year round. If there are no reasons for switching to the winter position of the sash, this procedure is not necessary.

In addition, there is a way to visually determine whether the winter mode is set on plastic windows, photo examples with markings can be easily found on the Internet. According to this method, it is necessary to find a marking in the form of a dash, asterisk or dot on a round pin.

Next, determine the direction of this mark. If the marking points towards the room, then the windows are set to summer operation. If the mark looks towards the street, then the design is set to winter mode.

Pins are not only round, but also oval. The mode of operation in this case is determined by the nature of the placement of the eccentric.

If it is turned vertically, then the windows are set for summer weather. In a horizontal position, the trunnion presses the sash to the frame as tightly as possible, which indicates the winter mode.

Having determined the position of the sash, you can proceed to the solution of the question of how to switch the windows to winter mode, video instructions describing this procedure are presented on the network in large numbers.

How to switch VEKA plastic window fittings to winter mode?

Operational practice shows that it is better not to rebuild Veko windows for winter mode at all for the first two years of operation.

This drastically reduces their resource - the mating density and the rubber bands will have to be replaced faster. And installers advise the same thing.

At the beginning of operation, the compaction is quite good, and winterization is not required.

Well, to seal for the winter, windows that have already served for more than one year, you will need to arm yourself with a hex nozzle for a screwdriver and, having opened the frame, find the trunnion adjusting handwheel.

There is a mark on the handwheel, usually it is either a slightly drilled recess or a “pimple” By inserting the key and turning it counterclockwise (in relation to the figure), we will turn the mark to the street, this will mean “winter mode” If you move the mark towards the room , it will be “summer mode”

I want to note right away that despite the ongoing disputes, it is still necessary to switch windows to winter mode.

Especially for residents of regions with severe winters, if only because of the usual law of physics, which says that at negative temperatures the body contracts, at positive it expands, I am now talking about window seals.

Switching the window to the “winter” position increases the pressure of the sash against the window frame, and why the pressure is needed, see above.

Open the sash and find eccentrics (trunnion) on it, well, or a hexagon bolt (less often an asterisk), if that's clearer.

  • We insert the hexagon into the head of the eccentric.
  • Clockwise is the “winter” position, counterclockwise is the “summer” position.
  • There is also a middle position in these windows.
  • There is a risk (line) on the trunnion if it is in the “outdoors” position, this is the winter mode in the “into the apartment” position, summer.

If you are still worried, then you can conduct an experiment, insert a sheet of thick paper between the sash and the frame, close the window, if the sheet is torn when pulled out, then we did everything right, if it is pulled out, then your window is still in summer mode.

PVC windows have many advantages over conventional windows or other types of double-glazed windows. Take, for example, one of the most significant advantages is the setting of the winter or summer mode. Not all plastic structures provide such modes, but many have them.

The functionality of the window depends on the fittings that it has. It can be functionally limited, or it can have quite a lot of useful functions.

Hardware classes

Depending on the class of fittings, the possibility of the PVC construction to switch or not to switch from one mode to another is determined - from winter to summer and vice versa. The quality and function of the fittings depend on the class. The manufacturer is also important, but not so much.

The following classes (or types) are distinguished:

  1. Budget. Fittings of this class are installed in windows with the lowest price. Only allows you to open and close windows.
  2. Standard. Fittings are provided for PVC structures of an average price. Allows you to prepare windows for winter or summer.
  3. Specialized. Such fittings can be combined with anti-burglary fittings. Allows you to adjust the window to the desired mode.

What are modes for?

Modes are needed for one simple reason - the weather outside the window is constantly changing. Winter is replaced by summer and vice versa. Accordingly, there is a constant drop or rise in temperature. Thanks to the ability to close the window more tightly or, conversely, less tightly, it becomes possible to adjust the “climate” of the room.

Summer mode

For the summer period, the main functions of the PVC construction are to pass heat, dust, dirt, and so on to a minimum. For this, the summer system was invented. It allows you to adjust the density of pressing the wings to the maximum weakening, which is very important to do after a long winter. To do this, the nut is unscrewed counterclockwise, and the effect of the eccentric on the frame is thereby weakened.

Winter mode

During the winter period, you want to keep as much heat as possible in the room. To do this, the position of the eccentrics changes in the direction of "compacting" the PVC structure. Moving, they allow you to fix the sashes more tightly to the frame insulation. By the way, during operation, the insulation can wear out a lot, so it is important to make mode transfers on time.

Transfer from one system to another can be done independently, but you need to do everything carefully and slowly. An error in the actions may lead to breakage of the plastic structure. To avoid this, you can invite a specialist from the company, the store where the PVC was purchased.

Blowing out a plastic window can be caused by:

  1. Poor squeezing of glass with a glazing bead. This is especially evident in winter, since materials tend to shrink under the influence of cold. Accordingly, the glazing bead can fly out of the grooves, and the glass, in turn, can fly out of the glazing bead. It should be replaced if necessary, but it is best to entrust this work to professionals in their field.
  2. Incorrect selection of fittings to the design. If the rubberized seal has an uneven thickness or is unevenly pressed by the mechanisms, then gaps may appear for the passage of cold air.
  3. Poor quality material from which the profile is made. It can simply crack over time.
  4. Incorrect frame installation. As a result, the sashes may not function properly and not close properly.
  5. By passing air at the junction of the frame and the vertical profile element. The gap should be sealed with liquid plastic, which comes with PVC.

Change modes or not

There are a number of reasons why the mode must be changed:

  1. The sashes began to close when opened, or they no longer open at all. There may be a reason for the sagging of the sashes, which in turn are attached to the frame with hinges. It is also possible that the winter mode is incorrectly set using the adjusting screw.
  2. The seal may wear out. In this case, dust, wind will freely penetrate into the interior of the room. If it is warm outside, then you should immediately replace the insulation gasket.
  3. Also, the sashes can be displaced in a horizontal plane. This directly indicates that the configuration was initially performed incorrectly.

In one of the reasons it was indicated about the sealant. So, in order to avoid wear and tear, it is not always necessary to adjust the PVC structure specifically for the winter. When pressed tightly, the seal wears out a lot. Therefore, a winter mode is needed, but if possible, its use should be limited. It all depends on the weather, if the winter turns out to be windy with snowstorms and blizzards, then cold and frost will penetrate the house.

How to find out if a window can be switched to winter mode

In order to find out the functionality of the PVC structure, it is necessary to examine it from the inner end. There should be a hole in the handle area for a screwdriver. If it is, then the plastic window can be converted from one system to another. But you also need to know that the hole must be suitable for a hexagon.

If it is oval, then there can be two options: either PVC is transferred to summer and winter modes, or not. Need to check with the seller.

How to switch a window to winter mode and back

Translation is carried out by following these steps:

  1. To begin with, the inner end of the sash is inspected to find eccentrics. Their number can be different, but you need to configure each one individually.
  2. The eccentrics are moved mainly clockwise until the sash is firmly pressed against the seal. Here you need tools such as a wrench or pliers.
  3. It remains only to check whether all the steps are performed correctly. Here you need a regular sheet of paper. It is clamped with a PVC sash. If, after this procedure, the sheet is freely removed from the gap between the sash and the frame, then the window still has a summer system. If the sheet is not removed, PVC is installed with a focus on the winter.

Thus, summer tuning is carried out in reverse chronological order.

Step-by-step instruction

In general, the whole translation process is as follows:

  1. Initially, the inner end surface of the valves is thoroughly cleaned. Particular attention should be paid to joints and connections. It is also necessary to clean the end of the frame. This is done so that no dirt gets on the mechanisms, fittings of the valves.
  2. The fittings themselves are additionally cleaned with a brush with a hard bristle.
  3. Seals and surfaces coming into contact with them are wiped with a cloth. This is necessary to remove the old grease with dirt accumulated on it.
  4. Seals can be replaced, if necessary, if they are badly worn, for example, during long or improper use.
  5. Upon completion of the preliminary work, the eccentrics, the hinges are lubricated with silicone.
  6. Next, the trunnions are adjusted with a hexagon or a screwdriver. They are rotated in a certain direction, adjusting the pressure of the valves. Some types of eccentrics must first be pulled a certain distance from the end of the sash. For the ledges they are turned, and then returned to their original position.
  7. The adjustment is now checked. If the trunnions are adjusted for winter mode, then when the knob is turned, it will function tightly. If the summer mode is set, then the handle will turn easily.

Removing a worn seal:

  1. The old rubberized gasket is removed from the grooves of the frame.
  2. The profile must be wiped with a cloth, thereby removing dirt and dust.
  3. The corners of the frame are filled with special glue for rubber.
  4. The grooves are laid with new insulation. This is done carefully, without tension.
  5. All excess is cut off, and the joints of the sealant are glued together.

Wrong setting

First, a little about the correct setting:

  1. A properly adjusted window does not create any sounds during operation, for example, the sounds of rubbing parts or surfaces.
  2. The details responsible for the correct position of the sash in space should be located approximately the same.
  3. Rubber gaskets between the sash and the frame must be resilient and easily return to their original shape after opening the sash.

Setup can be carried out independently, since special knowledge and skills are not needed here. But all the same, it is necessary to carry out all work carefully. Even with small adjustment errors, the window may break, therefore, urgent repairs will be required.

What needs to be done before starting adjustment work, and what non-compliance with the rules can lead to:

  1. You should find and use the instructions that came with the PVC. If you randomly change the position of the eccentrics, then they may become unusable for further use, the entire adjustment mechanism will be disrupted. Pressure rollers, a rubberized seal may also suffer.
  2. You should first check the technical condition of the window. If some parts are very worn out, for example, a seal, then it will not work to set the winter mode. But it will turn out to break the bolts.

Thus, seasonal modes have many advantages. They allow you to adjust the "climate" indoors, at home. Winter adjustment is especially relevant, as constant drafts can cause a lot of trouble.

The transfer of modes should be done no more than once every six months. A more frequent change may cause wear of some parts of the PVC structure or even breakage. In order for breakdowns to occur as rarely as possible or not at all, it is worth taking care of the PVC structure. It needs to be cleaned and lubricated. The instructions contain detailed descriptions of care, the main thing is to follow them.

Modern window systems, contrary to the opinion of the inhabitants, require constant maintenance. Of course, they do not need to be sealed for the winter or painted every season, as is the case with wooden counterparts.

For full-fledged functioning, metal-plastic double-glazed windows must be transferred to the mode corresponding to the season. How to carry out self-adjustment of plastic windows for the winter? And how important is it to do so?

Seasonal maintenance

The main feature of opening windows is that they do not have vents. For better ventilation of the room, the system provides for rotary shutters. During the operation of plastic double-glazed windows, you can notice that a draft appears in winter. Do not panic - this is not a manufacturing defect, but simply the seasonal mode is incorrectly set. Transferring plastic windows to winter and summer modes is a mandatory maintenance procedure.

The tilt and turn mechanism of the double-glazed window must be adjusted depending on the season of the year

Drafts may also occur during prolonged use. This is due to the loosening of the screws of the hinges of the rotary-locking mechanisms. By independently adjusting windows for the winter, you can easily save 3-7 thousand rubles on calling specialists.

Leak test

How to prepare plastic windows for winter? With the onset of cold weather, it is necessary to conduct a preventive examination of the state of normal locking of the valves in the winter mode. Tightness can be checked in several ways:

  • Tactile. By running your hand along the frame, you can determine the presence of serious drafts.
  • Fire matches or lighters. The deviation of the flame from the vertical indicates the presence of blowing.
  • Sheet of paper. They leave him in a closed sash and try to pull him out. If the sheet comes out easily, then the sash does not close tightly.

If the paper sheet is easy to pull out through the sash, then the window is leaking.

Having identified problem areas, they begin to regulate the system to optimal requirements.

Switching winter/summer modes

When installing double-glazed windows, installers set the initial neutral parameters for locking the sashes. All positions will be adjusted for optimal functionality. However, then it is necessary to make adjustments to the settings - ideally at intervals of 2 times a year.

Why is it needed

Often, seasonal adjustment is forgotten, leaving the sash clamp in the neutral position. As with any violation of the rules of operation, over time there are consequences:

  • drafts from under the sash even with correct mounting adjustments;
  • if the summer mode is set, then in winter this will not provide sufficient pressure on the locking mechanism, which will cause heat loss from the room;
  • if you leave the winter position, then due to the constant strong pressure of the sash on the seal, the latter will quickly become unusable;
  • in the absence of seasonal adjustment, the normal microclimate of the room is disturbed, including an increase in the level of humidity (there is a risk of condensation and mold).

Incorrect operation may cause condensation to form on the glass

To do this, you need to correctly set the winter and summer modes of plastic windows in the sash settings.

Adjustment mechanisms

Before proceeding to change the mode, it is necessary to determine the places where the devices for adjustment are located. In most cases, the system provides for the presence of special mechanisms - trunnions, which, depending on their position, determine the degree of pressing the sash required for the season.

They are located at the ends of the metal-plastic window or door. The number of such mechanisms may vary depending on the size and manufacturer of the double-glazed window (from two or more).

Places of possible location of eccentrics - they are in different places for different manufacturers

The trunnions may differ in appearance, but perform the same adjustment function.

Options for the appearance of eccentrics

On the edge of the eccentric is a risk, which serves as an indicator of the desired mode. By default, it is set up - this is the neutral position, which must be changed in accordance with the season.

Risk indicating the set mode

How to switch

The process itself is quite simple, you only need one tool - a simple hexagon (usually 4 mm), less often an asterisk.

It is necessary to set plastic windows in the cold season mode before the onset of frost, when the temperature is still plus 5–10 °.

Open the double-glazed window and inspect the ends. Usually one eccentric is always on the side, the second on top.

Label indicating adjustment mode

Most likely, the regimes will be in a neutral position, and the risks will point upwards. Having picked up the right tool, change the position of the marker.

To set a plastic window for the winter, turn the notch on the regulator to the outside of the room. With the onset of the warm season, the position of the marker should be translated into the room with a label. Accordingly, if there are several such regulators, then the modes are switched by turning all available eccentrics to one position.

You need to constantly switch modes according to the season - this is what will ensure normal functionality, ventilation balance and sufficient energy saving in housing.

What other adjustments are there?

If, when checking for tightness of locking, cold air still enters from above or below the sash, then most likely the problem is in the incorrect setting of the sash geometry.

The figure shows the main points where you may need to adjust the fittings. The design of the window provides several adjustment options:

  • shift horizontally and vertically;
  • setting the position of the bottom corner;
  • the degree of pressing to the frame.

Location of adjustment points

How is the optimal mode set?

Setting the vertical position

This is done by adjusting the bottom loop. Remove the protective cover. There are two adjustment points - horizontally and vertically. To raise or lower the sash, adjust the screw located on top of the hinge. To raise it, turn it clockwise, and vice versa if you need to lower the height.

Vertical position correction

Horizontal Correction

To perform this operation, both loops must be adjusted.

On the side of the lower canopy there is a second screw designed to change the horizontal position. When it is turned from left to right, the sash moves towards the hinge, and vice versa when turning it back.

Lower overhang adjustment

Drafts are also possible through the non-lockable top corner of the window. To do this, set the clamp of the upper hinge, the adjustment screw of which is located on the side. We twist it and achieve the desired result - evenness and tight fit.

Top canopy setting

When changing the horizontal position, it is necessary to leave a gap of several millimeters between the hinge and the sash. Otherwise, with a strong tightening, the ventilation mode will not work.

Changing the degree of pressing the sash

The clamping mechanism is another device in the form of a plate located on the frame. It is designed to resist burglary by pushing the sash from the side of the street.

Clamping mechanism plate provides tighter closure

When turned clockwise, the tongue extends, which will contribute to a tighter closure.

Adjusting the fit of the top corner

There is another adjustment screw to press the top corner of the window against the frame. To get to it, you need to open the window in two directions at once. To do this, press the blocker on the end of the sash, as shown in the picture.

Locking loop and tongue locks allow you to press the top corner against the frame

Pull it all the way, turn the handle to ventilate, and then pull the upper edge of the sash towards you. Access to the clamping mechanism is open. On one of the plates there is a place for a hexagon. By turning it, you can adjust the tightness of the upper corner of the sash.

These are the main problems that may appear over a long period of operation, when the operation of the system gradually weakens the modes initially set. But immediately after installation, all these settings are adjusted by the installers themselves from the supplier - they are required to ensure the correct operation of the system.

Of course, if there is no experience or it is not clear how to do the adjustment yourself, it is best to contact the installer. They will send their specialist who will perform all the necessary procedures, putting the sashes in the right position.

If the settings don't work

A situation may arise when the sashes are adjusted correctly, the plastic windows are switched to the desired season mode and all mechanisms close well, and problems still arise:

  • draft;
  • condensate;
  • freezing.

Such nuances can arise in several cases:

  1. Broken windows. This happens quite rarely and then only when ordering from dubious companies.
  2. Wrong installation. During installation work, the correct technology must be observed: maintaining the gaps between the frame and the opening, high-quality fastening and mandatory sealing with construction foam.
  3. No trim on slopes. Mounting foam without protection quickly collapses under the influence of ultraviolet radiation and moisture.
  4. Sealant wear. It is possible with prolonged or improper use of double-glazed windows.

When a fault is found, it is eliminated. The windows should now function correctly and provide sufficient tightness.
