  2. Sawdust is thoroughly mixed with dry cement and water is added little by little. 20 buckets of shavings will require about 3 buckets of water.
  3. The resulting mixture should be evenly distributed over the ceiling, slightly tamping with your feet. The layer should be about twenty centimeters. Such warming should be carried out in the middle of summer, so that everything dries out by the cold.

However, this type of insulation has a significant drawback - the chips can rot, besides, it can become a haven for bugs and mice.

Expanded clay insulation

Expanded clay is the best solution, because small pests and rodents do not like it, it is light, durable and does not rot. It also absorbs sounds well.

You will need:

  1. expanded clay;
  2. glassine;
  3. boards;
  4. scotch.

Laying:

  1. The surface should be prepared, it is cleaned of debris, and then covered with glassine or film, fixing it on the beams. Joints should be sealed with tape.
  2. Expanded clay should be poured in a thick layer - at least 20 cm. If you live in cold regions, then the layer should be increased to 40 cm, but only if the floors are quite strong, since such a layer will weigh a lot.

And after that, boards are stuffed on top, because walking on mineral wool means crushing it and reducing strength and thermal qualities. In this regard, the foam is stronger, plus it does not absorb moisture. But it is not recommended to walk on it either, so you will have to lay OSB boards or plywood sheets on top, you can board.

As for expanded clay, it is simply scattered over the surface of the flooring, having previously stuffed restrictive elements around the perimeter of the latter. It can be all the same slats laid vertically in three rows. The thickness of the expanded clay layer in the amount of 150 mm is more than sufficient.

Polyurethane foam is the best of all listed. But it has two drawbacks:

  1. It costs much more than all other materials.
  2. Its application requires special equipment, consisting of two cylinders and a compressor, plus hoses with a nozzle.

Thermal insulation of the ceiling with expanded clay

Before you insulate a wooden ceiling with polyurethane foam, you need to weigh the pros and cons. The only thing to add is that manufacturers today offer mini installations. They include two cylinders in which the insulation components are already pumped under pressure, that is, the compressor is no longer needed. The equipment weighs 30 kg.

Polyurethane foam is applied in a small layer (within 2-3 cm). In air, the colloidal mass immediately hardens and becomes strong. So you can walk on such a warm floor in the attic without fear of damage. At the same time, the heat-insulating layer is a continuous coating without seams, gaps.

You can save a little on the insulation of the ceiling from the outside. To do this, a rough ceiling is stuffed along the lower edges of the supporting beams. Please note that the draft ceiling, which is laid on top of the floor beams, should be mounted only after a vapor barrier film (for example, isospan) has been laid on top of the beams. Its task is not to allow moisture to pass towards the insulation from the side of the attic, but to allow excess moisture to leave the space between the beams. The most important thing is to properly install the vapor barrier. There are marks on the film that show which side to install the material towards the insulation layer. It is important not to make a mistake here.

The second option is to use mineral wool mats, one side of the panel of which is, as it were, spring-loaded. That is, if you press on it and then release it, the edge takes its original shape. Therefore, from the side of the materials, a force will act that holds the insulation in a horizontal hanging position.

Insulation with polystyrene boards

This option is simpler than the previous one, because thick insulation boards can be glued to the plane of the draft ceiling, the elements of which are stuffed along the floor beams. You can glue with any composition: liquid nails, "Moment" and so on.

In addition, it is possible not to use additional protective layers in the form of films and membranes. Although experts assure that penny expenses should not be avoided. It is better to stretch the film from below. It will not only protect the heat-insulating layer from moisture coming from the interior of the wooden house, but also the wooden floor beams. And this is an increase in their service life.

Another worthy heat-insulating material with which you can insulate a wooden ceiling from the inside in a private house. It is based on foamed polyethylene, covered on the outside with a foil layer. Its thermal conductivity is 0.049 W / m K. It is inferior to both mineral wool and expanded polystyrene. But there is one caveat here. This value has a material with a thickness of 4 mm. What to do if there is no access to the space above the ceiling? There is an exit. True, you should be prepared for the fact that the height will decrease somewhat. Now the insulation will be from the inside. How to carry out work?

It's simple: first comes a layer of vapor barrier, then insulation, then another layer of vapor barrier.

Why are two layers needed? They prevent the dampness of the rafters, the ceiling from the inside and the insulation. Only after that you can already hem the decorative ceiling. How to do the work?


  1. The first layer of vapor barrier is attached. The same parchment will do. It can be smeared with glue in several places.
  2. A mounting rail is stuffed through the vapor barrier. It is better not to rush and do everything as carefully as possible: holes for self-tapping screws are drilled in the mounting rails, then you need to carefully tighten them with a screwdriver.
  3. Thermal insulation is fixed. Styrofoam is inserted between the rails.
  4. The second layer of the vapor barrier is attached to the rail.

Another most simple and affordable method after sawdust. Pros:

  • ecologicaly clean;
  • unlike sawdust, it does not burn;
  • resistant to temperature changes;
  • not afraid of rodents, fungi and insects;

  • easy to do by hand.

All work is done outside. First, the already mentioned steam and waterproofing are carried out. Even a simple PVC film will do. It is better not to use roofing material: it can release harmful toxins. Stages of work:

  1. The pipe outlet and wiring are insulated with non-combustible materials. Sheets of iron or metal pipes are suitable.
  2. Waterproofing is rolled out over the entire area. Joints need to be processed. Waterproofing is securely fixed with a stapler or special adhesive tape.
  3. Vapor barrier is laid. Suitable overlapping technology. Then everything is fixed with a stapler.
  4. 5 cm of mashed soft clay should be laid on the vapor barrier layer.

  6. A screed is laid on the expanded clay - a layer of cement and sand. This will protect the material.
