We are converting plastic windows to winter time. Winter and summer mode in plastic windows: switching methods, malfunctions and their elimination. How to switch modes

Adjustment of plastic windows on the principle of "winter-summer" is a fairly simple procedure. You can do it yourself without the help of specialists. That will save you money and keep the warmth and comfort in the house all year round. It will also extend the life of your windows.

Such adjustment of plastic windows is carried out by the method: weakening or strengthening the degree of pressing the sash, by changing the position of the trunnions.

Winter and summer have different degrees.

There is such a thing as "winter-summer mode" on plastic windows.

This means that the adjustment on plastic windows in winter and summer should be completely different. Consider these types of window adjustments in more detail.

Video window adjustment example

plastic window adjustment

Due to the possibility of adjusting plastic windows in the "winter-summer" mode, it is possible to increase the air flow in the warm season and reduce it in the cold.

To carry out the adjustment of plastic windows "winter-summer" is quite simple.

The whole process is associated with the use of a cylinder with a displaced center, pressing the sash against the window frame - an eccentric (trunnion).

plastic window adjustment

It is turned with the necessary screwdriver, and in some windows - manually, slightly pulling a little towards itself.

The manufacturer provides for the so-called "middle" position of the eccentric roller,

plastic window adjustment

which is also called "autumn-spring". In this case, the pressing of the window sash is sufficient, but not excessive.

Window adjustment before the winter season

With a decrease in temperature, especially during the transitional heating period, to achieve minimal heat loss, use the “maximum pressure” window adjustment.

The “winter” position of the eccentric loads the seal to the maximum. For this reason, it is undesirable for newly installed new . In addition, receiving minimal blowing, the room loses the additional possibility of ventilation, because. in winter it is rarely used, and sometimes not at all.

On the other hand, the "winter" position of the trunnion increases the load on the seal. And this, in turn, will not damage the new window, when it has somewhat lost its elasticity.

Adjusting the window with "maximum pressure" is highly undesirable for the sealing material retains its deformation and may not return to its original position. And this is fraught with its rapid wear.

Therefore, the longer this position of the eccentric is used, the greater the likelihood of an early replacement of the seal.

To ensure maximum pressure, you must:

  • pull the trunnion towards you a little
  • rotate to the right so that
  • (so that the gap between the eccentric roller and the edge of the sash hardware is minimal).
  • If there is a notch on the roller, then with the correct position, it will be directed to the seal.

Adjustment of windows for the summer season

The end of the heating period usually falls on fairly warm weather, so the load on the compactor is reduced using the "summer" mode.

In this case, the impact on the seal is minimal. Therefore, this position of the eccentric is welcome for any windows.

Adjusting the trunnion according to this principle somewhat increases the air circulation in the room. However, the question arises about the need for such a transition, since. windows are often ventilated in summer.
To ensure minimum pressure, adjust the window for the summer season as follows:

  • the eccentric should be pulled back a little
  • rotate to the left so that
  • so that the gap between the trunnion and the edge of the sash fittings is maximum.
  • If there is a notch on the roller, with the correct position, it will be directed to the window handle.

What gives the adjustment of the plastic window "winter-summer".

Thus, the “winter-summer” adjustment can save and extend the service life of a plastic window. However, the degree of pressure must be increased gradually, from year to year. Only such a principle will allow not to violate the tightness and avoid drafts. In addition, all manipulations for adjusting plastic windows are so simple that they do not require special qualifications, great power efforts, or calling a specialist. Therefore, both a man and a woman can adjust the window according to the “winter-summer” principle with their own hands.

The craze for plastic windows is not accompanied by a corresponding increase in the owners' knowledge of window maintenance. Even such a simple question: whether plastic windows need to be adjusted for the winter is unexpected for 95% of respondents. And the fact that you can adjust plastic windows with your own hands is generally known to a few.

In fact, the process is very simple. It is important to know where, why and how to twist. Let's try to understand the instructions together using photo and video materials.

The difference between summer and winter

The first few years after the installation of plastic windows in winter, customers are completely euphoric: warm, cozy, nowhere to see through. However, over time, in extreme cold, a barely noticeable flow of cold air begins to be felt at the closed sash. Every year it gets stronger. Immediately there is a desire, as in the good old days, to seal all the cracks with a paper strip. Some do it unknowingly.

But window manufacturers foresaw this situation and provided for the adjustment of windows for "winter-summer", when the force with which the sash and frame are pressed against each other changes. In the first few years after installation, such work is not only unnecessary, but harmful. Firstly, the sealing gum perfectly keeps the tightness even in a neutral position, and secondly, a strong compression of the rubber leads to the fact that its elasticity is lost at low temperatures.

Over time, the seal wears out and begins to let cold winter air into the apartment. The masters who install windows do not explain what needs to be done with the appearance of drafts, but offer a paid annual service, which most customers refuse, which, by the way, in our opinion, is correct.

It is not necessary to call professionals to adjust plastic windows for the summer (winter). The work of the owners of apartments can be done with their own hands.

Adjustment tools

Adjusting plastic windows on your own is impossible without a few simple tools:

  • Furniture key No. 4 - always included with a screwdriver. If there is no such tool at home, it can be purchased at stores selling furniture fittings (it costs from 70 rubles);
  • Several screwdrivers with a Phillips tip (you need crosses of the shape and size TX and T);
  • Slotted screwdrivers 4-5 mm wide;
  • Pliers or pliers;
  • Keys with an asterisk-shaped tip - not needed for all types of windows.

Instructions for regulating PVC windows

Window manufacturers, before installing them, perform a full cycle of work on adjusting the locking and clamping mechanisms. However, over time, parts wear out, changing the initial settings, which requires adjustments to the operation of window mechanisms.

Preventive work may be required in the following cases:

  • difficult movement of the sash when opening or closing - touches the frame from below or from the side;
  • penetration of cold air from the street in winter (drafts);
  • the handle does not fix the sash in the “Closed” position - it does not rotate;
  • loose fittings (most often, a handle);
  • transition from summer to winter;
  • sagging window sash (balcony door).

Sash clamp

Let's start with the simplest: adjusting the sash pressure for winter mode. When installing windows, installers leave the standard force of pressing the sash to the sealing gum of the frame. However, in winter, due to a loosely closed window, it is cold outside. You can fix the problem by simply turning the locking pin - the window will close very tightly.

The trunnion is located at the end of the opening sash and has three types (see photo):

  • locking trunnion, regulating the clamping force - the first (left) in the photo;
  • anti-burglary locking pin with adjustable clamping force - medium in the photo;
  • locking anti-burglary pin with adjustable pressure and height - the third in the photo.

Attention: carefully inspect the opening doors from above, below and from the back. In some models, the clamping eccentric may be there. Also, a number of firms put 2-3 trunnions on the sash. In this case, you need to adjust all the eccentrics at once, otherwise the window will skew.

The window trunnion can occupy three positions:

  1. standard, it is also called neutral, with a clamp of medium strength;
  2. summer - the pressure is weak;
  3. winter - the maximum possible pressure.

You can determine for what period of the year the window is adjusted by the location of the eccentric. If it is an oval, then the vertical position indicates a weak pressure (summer mode), at an angle - standard, horizontal - a strong pressure (winter version). The round pin has a notch. If she looks outside - the summer version of the pressure, into the apartment - the winter one, up - the standard.

You can change the position of the eccentric with pliers or a furniture key. Sometimes, to turn the pin, you need to pull it towards you.

Pliers will be required for Maso fittings, where the trunnions are oval. A wrench can also come in handy here - they can also turn the eccentric. The Torx eccentrics should be moved from one position to another with a hex wrench or a flat screwdriver. Roto locking mechanisms must be adjusted with a furniture key.

We emphasize once again: it is necessary to increase the pressing force of the sash to the frame only if the tightness is lost. You can check this in several ways:

  • light a match or lighter and bring it to the closed sash. The deviation of the flame indicates a draft. In this case, adjustment for "winter-summer" is required;
  • insert a paper sheet between the frame and the open sash and close the window. If the sheet can then be pulled out easily, the fit must also be adjusted.

Important: adjustment of winter-summer plastic windows is not carried out on newly installed windows - in winter mode, a new sealing gum may lose elasticity due to strong pressure.

With the departure of frost, the clamping force must be weakened. Thus, two tasks are solved at once:

  • the elasticity of the seal is maintained;
  • airing of the room is provided through a loosely closed sash.

Preparing for the summer season is easy for any member of the family:

  • pick up a tool under the pin;
  • open the window and set the location of the eccentrics;
  • turn all the trunnions counterclockwise (oval - to a vertical position, round - to the position of the risks "on the street").

As often happens, when the condition is too neglected, the patient has several diseases at once. So is the window. It may turn out that after adjusting the trunnions, drafts are still walking around the wings (the result of long-term operation without preventive maintenance).

Then further adjustment of the window mechanisms, more precisely, the upper and lower hinges, will be required. To complete it, you need to know how to adjust the plastic windows yourself for the winter, if there is a need to adjust the position of the upper and lower hinges.

Top loop

When a window does not close well, catches on the frame or unevenly adheres to the seals (skewed), there is always an influx of air from the street. In this case, the hinges are subject to adjustment. Here it is possible to change the position of the sashes in two planes: up-down, right-left, as a result of which it is possible to achieve their perfect fit to the frame. By tightening the bolt on the scissors, at the tilt-and-turn window, you can pull the upper corner of the sash to the frame.

For different manufacturers, for example, "Rehau" and "Veka", the appearance of the loop may be different, as well as the tools with which they are adjusted. But the principles are the same, as can be clearly seen in Fig. below.

Adjusting the upper hinge allows you to move the sash in a horizontal plane - to the left or right. Such a manipulation is needed if the window sash has sagged, and it began to cling to the impost. The adjusting screw is in the hinge. To access it, the window must be opened at least 90 o (a smaller angle is also allowed, but it is extremely inconvenient to work in such a situation).

Turn the adjusting screw carefully so as not to damage the locking mechanism when closing the window. Experts advise after each half-turn of the screw to close the sash and check how the bolt hooks enter the striker plate. At the same time, you can see how the sagging corner fits to the frame.

Turning the key counterclockwise raises the lower opposite edge of the sash. In this case, it is necessary to monitor the trunnions (hooks) - they can rest against the reciprocal bar. In order to maintain a balance: to raise the angle and ensure the normal entry of the hooks into the reciprocal bar, sometimes you have to rearrange the rebate (in the language of specialists - the reciprocal bar).

Accordingly, turning the adjusting screw counterclockwise lowers the lower opposite corner.

Attention: in many works it is erroneously indicated that when the adjusting screw of the upper hinge is rotated clockwise, the sash moves away from the frame. We especially note that it is not the clamping force that is regulated, but the position of the sash in relation to the frame. At the same time, the upper corner of the sash in the hinge area does not move away from the frame, but, on the contrary, is attracted to it.

Often, adjusting the upper hinge does not work - the corner in the hinge area does not stick tightly to the frame. In this case, it is necessary to adjust the swing-out mechanism, and specifically, tighten the bolt on the scissors. To access it, the sash must be opened simultaneously in two planes.

To do this, first the window is opened in the usual way - rotary. Then, pressing the blocker to the sash, move the handle to the “ventilation” position. After that, the window is loosely covered and thrown back. The sash hangs on the bottom hinge.

One of the plates has a hex head bolt. By turning it clockwise, the force of pressing the sash profile to the frame is increased. Accordingly, by rotating the bolt in the opposite direction, the fit of the corner to the frame is weakened.

bottom loop

The bottom hinge has two adjustment screws. One of them is responsible for moving the sash horizontally (left-right), like the top hinge - it is located below. By tightening this screw, you can raise or lower the upper opposite corner of the sash.

The second type of adjustment (vertically) can be found at the top of the hinge - for this you need to open the sash to the tilt position and remove the decorative trims. By tightening the screw, the sash can be raised (clockwise) or lowered (in the opposite direction). For example, horizontal regulation did not allow eliminating the contact of the lower corner of the sash from the side of the handle with the frame profile from below. Raising the whole sash solves the problem.

Pen

The handle of a plastic window has only one function - with the help of hooks on the striker plate, pull the sash to the frame or vice versa, release the clamps to open the window. Therefore, it does not have any adjustments either for the degree of pressure or for changing the position of the sash in the frame. However, this does not mean that the window handle does not have problems. She can:

  • break down;
  • loosen;
  • jam;
  • turn hard.

All of these faults are easy to fix yourself.

The handle broke. To replace the handle, it is enough to pull the decorative bar covering the trim towards you and turn it 90 o (see photo). Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws and remove the broken handle. The new handle is placed in the same position as the old one. Mounting is done in reverse order.

Loosened. It's even easier here: move the cover and tighten the screws.

Jammed. The most unpleasant situation when the handle does not turn is wedge. This happens due to the careless opening of the sash: the position of the handle was changed too sharply, as a result of which the locking mechanism did not work.

A lock on each window is installed to protect the locking mechanism from accidentally turning the handle in the open position - leading to inevitable damage to the fittings. Blockers are installed at the end of the sash, immediately under the handle (there are modifications of fittings where the blocker is at the bottom of the sash). Different manufacturers of accessories have different ones, which can be clearly seen in the photo.

You can turn off the lock on the open sash. On Maco fittings, it is necessary to press on the lock tab and move it to the “parallel to the sash” position, then change the position of the handle. On other types of locking mechanism, it is enough to press the locking latch to the sash and turn the handle.

It turns hard. The handle is hard to turn in the absence of lubrication in the bolt mechanism. The problem is eliminated after the preventive care of the fittings, during which all metal parts are cleaned of dirt and lubricated (the lubrication of PVC windows is discussed in detail in the work: "").

Attention: if the handle turns tightly in the final part of the “closed” position, you need to adjust the pins - the sash is strongly pressed against the frame. The weakening of the clamp will weaken the stroke of the handle (it will also save the seals from premature wear).

What to do if the window does not close

Often it is not possible to close the window tightly (sometimes it does not close at all, i.e. it is pressed against the frame, but is not fixed with the handle in the closed position) after all the adjustments. Here the reason is the deformation of the profile of the sash inward or the frame outward (opposite deformation options are possible, but they do not create problems), as a result of which the hooks of the bolt (trunnion) simply do not reach the striker. You can fix the problem in two ways:

  1. align the sash profile;
  2. compensate for the bending of the frame profile with a lining under the striker.

Deforming towards the double-glazed window, the sash profile pulls the bolt bar along with it. A gap is formed between it and the reciprocal bar, which must be eliminated. Step by step, this work is performed in the following sequence:

  1. A side bead is removed from the sash (one is enough, from the hinge side). How to remove them and put them in place, see the article: "";
  2. The amount of deformation is determined: a level or any long even object is applied to the side of the sash and the gap is measured;
  3. A gasket is selected between the sash and the double-glazed window - its thickness should compensate for the size of the gap;
  4. With a smooth and thin plastic or wooden (but not metal) object, the sash profile is carefully pressed from the double-glazed window just below the installation site of the gasket;
  5. A gasket is placed in the gap formed;
  6. The pin is back in place.

Aligning the frame profile is much more difficult. Therefore, here the specialists go the other way: they install linings under the reciprocal bar, as a result of which it is fed towards the sash. Use plastic 3 mm thick (this is enough). Under the bar, you need to cut 2 linings: narrow and wide. To install them, the strikers are removed from the frame, and then installed with a gasket. This process can be seen on the video.

Is there a difference with the adjustment of PVC balcony doors

The principle of operation of the fittings of the metal-plastic door leading to the balcony is the same as that of the PVC window. Therefore, the settings are almost the same:

  • Horizontal movement of the door to the right or left is carried out by tightening the adjusting screw located in each loop under the decorative trim. If the door leaf clings to the doorway along the entire length from the side of the handle, it is necessary to tighten the screw 1-2 turns clockwise in each hinge (upper, middle, lower). If the door clings to the threshold with the corner farthest from the hinges, the screws are adjusted at the top and in the middle;
  • Vertical adjustment changes the position of the door in relation to the opening in height. To do this, tighten the vertical adjustment screw in the bottom loop. Turning the furniture key counterclockwise moves the door down, clockwise moves it up. Unlike a window, a “furniture key” with a diameter of 5 mm is needed here. After lifting the door two full turns, it is necessary to raise all strikers on the sides of the door frame (you need a “furniture key” with a diameter of 2.5 mm). After that, you will have to raise the main and additional strikers;
  • Front adjustment is responsible for the force of pressing the door to the door frame. For these purposes, the trunnions are turned, as in a plastic window. However, there are also differences. In some types of fittings, the clamping force is changed by the striker - for this, an adjustable screw with a hexagon head is placed under it (option "A" in the photo "Types of strikers").

In order for the windows to serve for a long time without losing their characteristics, before the start of the new season they must be:

  1. Thoroughly clean from dust and dirt, and then wash. First, dirt is removed from the drainage channel with a toothpick, and from the fittings with a hard bristle brush. Then slopes, profiles, a double-glazed window and a window sill are washed. A double-glazed window and profiles are washed out from two sides: from the street and indoors. It is possible to dissolve detergents in water without abrasive materials and aggressive chemicals (alkali, weak acid solution, etc.). Glass requires special washes. Wipe plastic with a soft sponge, and glass with paper or a rubber scraper;
  2. After drying, lubricate the shut-off valves and window seals. The work "" shows where, with what and how PVC windows are lubricated;
  3. Adjust the trunnions for the upcoming season.

The fittings of plastic windows from different manufacturers are almost identical, and therefore the preparation for the beginning of the season is the same. If there are any difficulties in preventive care or adjustment, you can always look at the manufacturer's instructions, which describe how to properly handle and adjust their products.

Conclusion

Manufacturers of plastic windows and doors are well aware of the problems that arise during the operation of their products. To solve them, various adjustments are provided in the window fittings.

  1. The degree of pressing the sash to the frame is regulated by trunnions. At the same time, proper care of fittings at the beginning of each new summer or winter season prolongs the life of both the window as a whole and the seals.
  2. Adjustment of the sash horizontally, when it sags, is carried out by tightening special screws in the upper and lower hinges.
  3. Raise the sash without changing the position of the corners in relation to the frame, you can use the adjusting screw located inside the lower hinge.
  4. The deformation of the sash profile is eliminated by a gasket between it and the double-glazed window. The bending of the frame towards the wall can be compensated by a gasket under the striker.

Thanks to plastic windows, houses have become more comfortable and cozy. Winter has ceased to be a terrible enemy. Distinctive features of PVC windows are their strength, reliability and long service life. But these products also need periodic repairs.

In order for the windows to be able to protect you in the winter, keeping warm, it is necessary to make preliminary preparations. Thanks to this work, the windows will function normally. Preparing windows for winter involves a number of activities. How to switch windows to winter mode? How to prepare plastic windows for winter?

Consider in detail the following algorithm of actions:

  • First you need to just wash the windows and do it carefully. It is necessary to wash both the slopes, and the window sill, and the profiles, especially if they are made of plastic material. Do not use harsh chemicals for cleaning. To clean the glass, you need a rag and a soft sponge. Windows should be washed from two sides: internal and external. When opening PVC windows, pay attention to the channels intended for drainage, they also need to be cleaned. This can be done with a toothpick or other sharp tool or object.
  • Pay attention to the moving components of the window hardware. Pressure rollers - it is in this place that the greatest accumulation of dirt occurs. Dirt is the main obstacle to the normal functioning of these elements. For cleaning, use a brush that has a hard bristle - this will help get rid of dust and old grease.
  • Once the cleaning of windows and hard-to-reach areas is complete, the mechanisms need to be lubricated. To do this, you will need silicone grease. Purchase a lubricant from a foreign manufacturer, as it has a long service life. If you do not want to spend your money on it, then you can use grease. According to many, ordinary vegetable oil can be used as a lubricant. But this is far from true. After a certain period of time, the vegetable oil dries up and becomes a kind of "sandpaper" that can make the mechanisms unusable for functioning. This can happen after about a year. When you lubricate the pressure rollers, be sure to turn the knob at this moment. Thanks to this, the lubricant can be evenly distributed over all parts.
  • Next, check the condition of the seals. This procedure must be taken seriously, because seals affect the overall temperature in the house. If strange noisy sounds appear inside the room, and the windows sweat, then these signs indicate a damaged seal. To increase the service life of the seal, it is necessary to clean and lubricate it occasionally. Use imported silicone as a lubricant. Lubricate the entire length of the seal to prevent freezing and drying out. If you notice its wear, it is necessary to replace the product. It is possible to do this with your own hands. Before buying, be sure to pay attention to the shape of the landing site, because it may differ. The sealing item must be removed with a flat screwdriver and install a new product. To make the job easy, lubricate the landing site. As soon as the work is completed and the sealing thing is set up, it is necessary to carry out an abundant processing of the seal from its upper part.

Follow these four steps when cleaning accumulated dirt. This is the first step to prepare windows.

Winter window adjustment

As soon as winter approaches, it is necessary to adjust the window. This will help to transfer them to winter mode. The procedure is that the frame must be pressed tightly against the window to prevent drafts from penetrating. For this job you will need a hex wrench.

The sides that are horizontal are adjustable from top to bottom across the panels. To carry out such adjustment, there are sockets in the window hinges intended for a hex key.

To adjust the top panel, the window must be open. To lift the edge of the panel, which is located opposite the hinge, the tool must necessarily rotate to the right. To lower, rotate the tool in the opposite direction.

If the plastic window is low, but you can control it from the street side, then you do not need to open the sashes for adjustment. Therefore, you can make an offset of two millimeters. Or eliminate the bevel, also by two millimeters.

The hinge, which is located at the bottom, allows you to adjust the vertical sides. To gain access to the hexagon socket, the protective cap must be removed. Also, to raise the tool, twist to the right side, to lower it - in the opposite direction. The shift value is two millimeters.

When changing the pressing force along the vertical and horizontal parts, do not forget that the eccentrics responsible for this are located throughout the edging. While turning the handle, each eccentric goes beyond its place of pressure.

To increase the pressing force of the frame, the eccentric must turn to the right. To reduce the force, he must turn in the other direction. Each eccentric has specially designed marks. Thanks to them, you can determine the pressing force of the frame. Therefore, if the mark is located where the seal is, then this means that the clamp is strong. If the mark is turned where the street is, then the clamp is weak.

Some windows have eccentrics that can be rotated using ordinary pliers.

In places where the loops are located, there are devices that regulate the clamping force. The degree of strength is determined by the protrusion of the tongue. From the length of the tongue, the density of pressing the frame to the window is determined. Changing the length of the tongue is carried out using a hex key.

To make the length of the tongue longer, the tool must be turned to the left side if the loops are located on the left side. If the hinges are located on the right, then it must be twisted to the right. During the winter period, it is necessary to press the frame as tightly as possible. In the summer, the pressure should be weak.

The main thing is not to overdo it. Do not press the frame too hard, otherwise the wear of the sealing material will accelerate.

Also in preparation for the winter season, the hinges also need to be adjusted, that is, press them hard. From the hinge, which is located below, it is necessary to remove the specially designed cap and scroll the bolt, which is located perpendicularly.

It is possible to adjust the pressing force of the hinge, which is located on top, if there is a flap. Its installation is carried out for ventilation, thus you can use the key. During this work, hold the window, because it is fixed with a single loop.

Insulation procedure for plastic windows

If after a certain period after the installation of PVC windows began to let in drafts and do not retain heat, then it is necessary to carry out their insulation. But first you need to find out the causes of these problems. Consider the main reasons:

  • The rubber seal has worn out. Need to make a replacement.
  • There was a depressurization of the area where the junction of the frame and the slope is located. To eliminate this shortcoming, the slopes should be removed, insulated and re-installed. We close the windows.
  • Perhaps after you installed plastic windows, the walls could shrink. To eliminate this problem, it is necessary to carry out additional adjustment of the fittings.

In winter days, the thermal insulation of plastic windows can be carried out thanks to the film. This method is the most expensive, but at the same time the most effective. The gluing of the film takes place from the street side. In rare cases, thermal insulation is carried out from the inside. The film must be stretched over the entire surface of the frame and must be attached at the edges.

During this process, it is necessary to simultaneously control the tension of the material, the force and uniformity. If the material is not stretched well in some place, a strong wind can form a breakthrough. If it turned out, then the hole must be sealed with adhesive tape so as not to spend money on acquiring a new product.

When choosing a film material, attention should be paid to frost-resistant characteristics. The required material has a yellowish tint. High-quality film is hard to find on the construction market, so buy it at a large building market. In order not to spoil the appearance of the room, buy material that is intended for greenhouses. This product has a higher cost, but it will last a long period of time due to its high level of stability.

The installation of this film consists in attaching it to the edges of the frame using adhesive tape. Windows must be closed.

Instead of adhesive tape, you can use a construction stapler, but defects will appear on the frame. The main processes of thermal insulation and sound insulation are provided by double-glazed windows.

There is a PVC insulation that can replace the film. This insulation is an environmentally friendly material. Manufacturers guarantee high-quality thermal insulation. PVC insulation withstands low temperatures and is not subject to deformation. You need to decide for yourself which material to choose.

When you switch windows to winter mode, pay attention to these tips. Preparing plastic windows for the winter with your own hands is a guarantee of maximum comfort and coziness in the room. All premises will be switched to winter mode. Work carefully and carefully.

Do not save on thermal insulation materials. Remember to clean the surface before starting the procedure. You will be able to switch the windows to winter mode. Prepared plastic windows for the winter will not let the cold into the room.

Many modern models of plastic windows have an undeniable advantage - the ability to switch to winter and summer mode. This is a very useful feature for our latitudes, where the temperature changes during the seasons are very noticeable. Today we will talk about the features of such windows and how to use them correctly.

Do I need such a function on plastic windows

With the onset of cold weather, even from the sealed construction of a plastic window, you can feel blowing. In winter, it is very important to keep the heat in the room. Therefore, the transfer of the window to winter mode must be carried out without waiting for frost. But if you do not feel discomfort and blowing from a window that is in summer mode, then you should not switch it: winter mode can greatly wear out the structure.

Properly adjusted mode will help you maintain a comfortable indoor climate.

In summer, on the contrary, constant ventilation and access of fresh air from outside to the room is required. Switching a plastic window to summer mode provides the above, without letting dust, dirt and heat in from the street, unlike a regular window.

How to determine if it is possible to switch windows to winter / summer

Fittings on PVC windows can be budget, standard and specialized. The cost of such double-glazed windows increases accordingly. Having entered a new building, you will most likely find windows of the first type - budget ones. Their fittings provide only two positions: open and closed. If you want to install other windows, please note: designs with standard and specialized fittings do not always have the function of switching to winter and summer modes.

Carefully inspect the ends of the window sashes near the locking fittings. In a frame equipped with a winter mode, a trunnion is visible - a protruding mode lever. It can be in the form of a hexagon, an asterisk or a washer with a horizontal groove for a screwdriver.

An example of a trunnion that allows you to switch the window to winter and summer mode

On some models of trunnion profiles (eccentric) first extends above the surface, and after adjustment is pressed back. But on most modern windows, eccentrics look like small hexagons with a recess for a key, or like convenient ovals.

Standard-sized windows have 5 eccentrics: three near the handle, at the end of the sashes, and one each near the top edge, top and bottom. These trunnions provide pressure to the sash, preventing it from sagging. The larger the window size, the more eccentrics are located around the perimeter. Proper load distribution between the locks ensures maximum tightness in winter and good ventilation in summer.

Hardware translation technology

This process is quite simple, but do not forget that the wrong translation can damage the fittings up to breakage. Therefore, be extremely careful when transferring a plastic window to winter mode.

Switching fittings to winter mode

  1. Find all pins on the window sash. You need to translate each of them.
  2. Take a suitable tool - a screwdriver, hex or pliers. Turn each eccentric clockwise to the maximum possible position.
  3. Some types of fittings have a feature: before adjusting, the eccentrics must be pulled towards you (like a winding mechanism in a wristwatch), and after the fittings have been transferred, drown them back. Specify such features when buying a window so that you do not have to call specialists at the wrong time.
  4. Check the result of your work. To do this, close the window and pay attention to how tight the handle turns. Since the fittings press the sash especially tightly in winter mode, the window handle should also close tightly.

Note! There is an easy way to check the sash clamping force. Place a piece of paper between the frame and sash before closing the window. Then pull the sheet towards you. If it exits freely, then the window remains in summer mode. If the paper is stuck tightly and torn when trying to pull it out - congratulations, the procedure for switching to winter mode was a success!

To switch the window to summer mode, you need to turn the locking pin in the opposite direction, counterclockwise.

Switch windows to seasonal mode every six months. At the same time, do not forget that metal plates may require adjustment due to frequent use. To protect windows from breakage, regularly clean the sashes and fittings from dirt and lubricate according to the instructions.

The design of plastic windows implies the ability to adjust the degree of pressing the window sash, this function is designed to transfer the system to seasonal winter-summer modes.

Plastic windows are installed in almost every third apartment or private house, but not all users are aware of the operational possibilities provided by metal-plastic windows.

One of the functional features is the transfer of the plastic window mode from winter mode to summer mode, and vice versa. This ability is determined by the type of fittings used. Of course, this property is not inherent in all PVC windows, but only in those on which more modern fittings are installed.

Plastic window modes - what are they and what is it

Winter mode of plastic windows- this mode allows for a closer fit of the window sash frame to the window frame and, accordingly, helps to save heat in the winter season;

Summer mode of plastic windows- differs in a less tight fit of the sash, which ensures the possibility of constant air circulation between the room and the environment, i.e. allows you to implement the micro-ventilation mode.

Standard position(mode of medium pressing of the sash to the frame - the eccentric is in the middle), as a rule, a window with a double-glazed window in this mode works equally well both in winter and in summer, providing optimal pressing of the seal.

Why do you need to adjust the modes of plastic windows

Setting the modes makes it possible to extend the life of the window. Adjustment allows you to change the degree of fit of the sash to the frame. After all, in winter the material is compressed, and in summer it expands. Adjustment of PVC window fittings makes it possible to reduce the wear of the seal and fasteners.

In addition, some of the reasons why you need to change modes include:

Blowing from the window. Cold air in the winter or dust in the summer is something to avoid when installing a new window;

The sash opens/closes poorly. For example, if a plastic window is stuck in the ventilation mode, then one of the reasons may be an incorrectly set mode;

Sagging window sash. It is a consequence of the wear of the hinges, it is eliminated by switching to the winter mode or replacing the fittings.

The ability to switch between modes is implemented in fittings from well-known manufacturers, such as: Maco, Roto, Siegenia Aubi, GU. However, today, setting up fittings is the rule rather than the exception for all fittings that are above the budget class.

How to determine if it is possible to switch windows to winter mode?

Often, during installation, the user does not receive information about the capabilities of window fittings. To understand whether a transfer to different modes is provided for a particular PVC window, you need to study the appearance (marking) of the fittings, in particular the pins.

A trunnion or eccentric is an element of fittings that allows you to adjust the degree of pressure of the sash against the window frame. It is located on the side of the sash.

If holes for a key are marked on the surface of the trunnion (in the form of an asterisk, a screwdriver, a hexagon) or the trunnion has an oval shape, this indicates that this fitting makes it possible to operate the window in different seasonal modes.

Do I need to convert windows to winter mode?

In autumn, with the approach of cold weather, it is recommended to switch the fittings to winter mode. Otherwise, there is a high probability of blowing from the side of the sash. If the seal is in good condition, you can leave the window in summer mode. During the period of warming, the transfer of fittings to the summer mode helps to reduce the pressure (load) on the seal and is a prerequisite for its long-term operation.

How to determine in what mode plastic windows?

There are two ways to check which mode a window is in:

Assess the degree of pressing the window sash to the frame. Take a sheet of paper and place it between the sash and the frame. If, after closing the window, the clamped sheet is pulled out with minimal effort, then the window is set to summer mode, if not pulled out (torn), then to winter.

Look at the position of the trunnion (eccentric). On the round trunnion there is a dash (dot, asterisk), by which you can evaluate the mode. If the dash is oriented towards the room - this is a winter mode, if towards the street - summer.

For oval trunnions, a different rule applies. If it is located vertically, a weak pressure of the sash to the window frame is provided, which allows us to assert that the window is set to summer mode. If horizontally - strong pressure, i.e. winter mode.

How to switch plastic windows to winter mode or summer mode

The transfer between modes is simple, but each step needs to be paid attention, otherwise, the fittings will fail, and it will need to be replaced or the window needs to be overhauled. Some users prefer to apply for a service to the company that installed the windows.

However, the translation process is not complicated and it is quite possible to perform it on your own, spending no more than half an hour on everything.

How to adjust plastic windows for winter mode with your own hands

Adjusting pins on plastic windows - step by step instructions:

Determine the location of the pins. The number of eccentrics depends on the leaf size. As a rule, there are three of them on the side of the handle and one each on the opposite side (where there are hinges, canopies, as well as on top and bottom of the sash). You need to find all the trunnions, because. when changing modes, you need to change the position of each of them;

Wipe all window elements and thoroughly clean the fittings. This will prevent dust from entering when turning the trunnions and protect them from mechanical damage;

Clean lubricated elements. After the transition, it is better to apply the lubricant again;

Consider pins. Find on their surface strips or other designations indicating the operating mode of the window. If the pins are oval, pay attention to their position relative to the horizontal;

Rotate each of the pins to the required position. You need to turn either with a hexagon (or other suitable tool) or with pliers (for oval pins).

Check the correctness of the translation by placing and then removing a sheet of paper from the closed window.

Note. Some manufacturers of plastic windows make the trunnions "recessed" into the sash. Before turning them, you need to pull them out, then set them in the desired position and drown them again. The turning procedure is similar to the procedure for moving the hands on a mechanical wrist watch.

Please note - when switching to winter mode, a long dash (or dot) should be directed towards the room (i.e., to the sealing gum), and in the case of an oval pin, it is located horizontally.

How to transfer plastic windows to winter mode - video

For your information, the ventilation mode for plastic windows in the winter mode works as standard and the window opens in the usual way.

Switching to summer mode is carried out in the same way, in reverse order. Knowing the sequence of transition to the winter mode, it is easy to set the window fittings to the summer one.

Features of setting up window fittings - rules

Despite the fact that the fittings provide for the possibility of switching between modes, it is not recommended to do this in the first year of operation of the window. The window is still functioning optimally;

Translation is carried out every six months. Moreover, the duration of the winter period is shorter than the summer one;

It is undesirable to operate the window in summer in winter mode, this increases the wear rate of the seal.

Is it worth switching plastic windows to winter mode?

The constant change of modes leads to the fact that the sealant loses its properties. This happens especially quickly in winter mode, because. trunnion pressure on it increases. In addition to the impact of the trunnion, the seal is affected by low temperature and high humidity. This leads to the destruction of the seal (it starts to blow, it becomes necessary to insulate the plastic window), the worn rubber of the seal needs to be replaced. In summer mode, the compactor lasts at least twice as long.

Conclusion

Despite the opportunities that modern window fittings provide, you need to evaluate the feasibility of each option. On the one hand, switching to winter / summer mode provides a more comfortable temperature regime in the room and reduces heat loss through the window opening. On the other hand, translation contributes to the rapid wear of the seal, which necessitates its replacement and additional costs. Therefore, it is necessary for each user to transfer windows for the winter or not, based on his personal preferences.
