Liquid wallpaper for the ceiling - a chic do-it-yourself decor. How to apply liquid wallpaper to the ceiling: tips from professionals Liquid wallpaper how to apply it to the ceiling

Liquid wallpaper is a beautiful design finishing material that resembles marble chips from a distance, and flock close up. Wallpaper is applied to vertical and horizontal surfaces, looks rich and has a lot of advantages. If you look at the photo of liquid wallpaper on the ceiling in the interior, they will amaze with their respectable and spectacular appearance.

Advantages of liquid wallpaper

Liquid wallpaper is a finishing material consisting of cellulose, silk or cotton fibers, eco-friendly water-based dye, acrylic dispersion binder, CMC wallpaper glue. Colored flocks or marble and quartz chips may be present in the composition to give the effect. Often, the composition of the mixture of liquid wallpaper includes mica sparkles, which are sold in a separate package and are added to the mass during kneading.

Liquid wallpaper has a number of advantages over conventional wallpaper and decorative plasters:

  • Before applying them, it is not necessary to perfectly level the ceiling, as they have filling properties.
  • They don't need a lot of space to cook. They do not need to be spread, cut and smeared with glue.
  • They are easy to apply and form a monolithic elastic coating that does not deform as a result of house shrinkage. They fill well the joints between the ceiling and the ceiling plinth or cornice, rosettes for chandeliers.
  • The microporous structure provides good thermal and sound insulation, forming a breathable surface. Under them, the greenhouse effect does not form and dampness does not occur, leading to the appearance of fungus.
  • The coating does not absorb odors and does not attract dust, does not emit toxic gases during combustion.
  • The coating is distinguished by high maintainability. It is enough to wet the damaged area with water and spread the material over the surface with a spatula.
  • If excess material remains after work, it can be dried and left until the next use or in case of repair.

Wallpaper classification

The range of wallpapers is quite diverse. There are not many manufacturers of this material on the market of finishing materials. The most popular and bought due to availability and low price is the products of the Russian company Silk Plaster. The Turkish manufacturer Bayramyx has approximately the same assortment. For premium interiors, the finishes of French manufacturers Fibres de cotex and Senideco are used.

Cotton

Cotton wallpapers are made from 100% natural natural cotton, they are distinguished by softness and high environmental friendliness. The composition of the mixture includes 98% cotton, and 2% are natural impurities: cellulose, mica, textile fibers. They are not afraid of drafts and shrinkage, do not bubble, do not move away from the walls. This is an ideal find for decorating rooms designed for children's pastime. Manufacturers of cotton liquid wallpaper offer up to 240 different shades. You can always also mix several colors together.

Cellulosic

Cellulose wallpaper is in great demand due to its affordable cost. In appearance, they look like silk, although they cannot boast of the same durability. Over time, they lose color. The general recommendation of a specialist is that if repairs are carried out in an apartment every 5 years, then this is the best choice in terms of price and quality. If you want to make repairs for centuries - choose silk ones.

Silk

Silk liquid wallpaper is a premium class wallpaper. The high price of them more than pays off with their beautiful appearance and durability. The composition of the material includes silk fibers. The resulting coating looks great due to its silky texture, does not fade in the light, does not change color and looks great for many years, which can be seen in the photo.

mixed

Mixed or combined silk-cellulose wallpaper is the best option in terms of price / quality. The composition of the material includes silk fibers with cellulose. Such wallpapers are resistant to ultraviolet radiation and retain their original appearance for a long time.

The procedure for applying wallpaper to the ceiling

Liquid wallpaper tends to draw dirt and rust to the surface from insufficiently treated surfaces. Therefore, before applying wallpaper, the ceiling must be processed. It is not necessary to especially level the surface, since liquid wallpaper swells during preparation and fills small cracks and irregularities. The reason for the appearance of stains can be non-removed metal objects: brackets, screws, nails. If earlier the ceiling was treated with copper sulphate, ugly stains may also appear. To prevent this from happening, you can wipe the surface with bleach and chlorine.

For the same reason, you should not apply the material on brightly colored surfaces. To prevent the appearance of an unexpected shade, it is necessary to prime the pre-painted ceiling and paint it with white paint. To prevent the appearance of stains, apply a primer in two layers. The technology of applying the primer provides for coating in two perpendicular directions.

The preparation of the walls also changes depending on the base material:

  • Old Khrushchev houses are made of porous material, so the surface under the wallpaper must be painted with oil paint.
  • Brick walls should be treated with a gypsum mixture and go over with a primer on top.
  • Metal self-tapping screws in drywall bases must be covered with putty or painted over with oil paint.
  • Leaks are also pre-painted with oil paint.
  • Wooden surfaces are pre-treated with a water-based emulsion.

It is enough to mix the purchased ready-made wallpaper before applying. The process of preparing a dry mix is different:

  1. pour the mixture into a plastic bucket;
  2. pour water in accordance with the instructions from the manufacturer;
  3. mix thoroughly;
  4. leave the solution for 12 hours;
  5. add a liter of water and stir again.

Now we can start the process of applying liquid wallpaper. Usually a spatula is used for this purpose. Apply liquid wallpaper with a spatula in a layer 3-5 mm thick. We level the applied material on the ceiling with a plastic float. If desired, after 5 hours, you can walk on the applied material with a textured roller. After that, the ceiling is dried for 48 hours. During this time, you can not touch it.

If the finish is applied in places:

  • with high traffic (in the hallway),
  • in places with the possibility of contamination (in the kitchen),
  • or in places with high humidity (in the bathroom)

Then liquid wallpaper can be covered with one or more layers of acrylic varnish on top. Each layer after application should dry for one hour and only then the next one is applied.

Interior design options

The technology of applying the material allows you to create images and even panels. To make a beautiful ceiling design with liquid wallpaper, you need to perform the following decoration technique:

  1. Draw a layout on the ceiling with a pencil;
  2. Apply wallpaper with a layer of 1.5–2 mm, protruding 1–2 mm beyond the contour;
  3. To highlight the boundaries of the pattern, use a spatula to shift the mass in the opposite direction;
  4. Wait until the mass dries;
  5. Step back from the dried layer 2 mm and apply another color in a thin strip. Move the new layer to the old one to highlight the border;
  6. On the surface, you can use beads, silver threads and other decorative details for decoration.

Using the same technology, a three-dimensional pattern is also created, with the difference that from the mass it is necessary to form a relief that protrudes from the surface. With a mixture of wallpaper, you can work like with plasticine - sculpt any shape. For convenience, it is better to paste over the outer contour with paper tape. It is not necessary to smooth down the material during the drawing process, then you will get a three-dimensional composition close to the bas-relief. You can mark the borders of the colors on the coating with a spatula, gently pushing the grooves. The remaining background after the pattern has dried is processed with a continuous layer of a different color.

In the photo you can see options for ornaments and patterns and other images and illustrations that are easy to apply with your own hands. Well combined liquid wallpaper with photo wallpaper.

In the kitchen

If you decide to apply liquid wallpaper to the kitchen ceiling, you need to cover it with acrylic varnish on top to increase the moisture resistance and dirt resistance of the coating. Acrylic lacquer strengthens the ceiling finish, forming a hard, vapor-permeable, moisture-resistant coating that will stably endure mechanical cleaning and cleaning with detergents. Lacquer can be applied in two ways:

  1. added to the mixture during the last stirring;
  2. applied to a dry surface.

The consumption of varnish is as follows:

  • when applied in one layer - 1 l. for 20 sq.m.;
  • when applied in 2 layers - 1 l. for 4 sq.m.

Liquid wallpaper is a finishing material that combines the advantages of conventional roll wallpaper and plaster. With the help of liquid wallpaper, you can not only create different textures, but also hide minor defects in the ceiling without laborious plastering and puttying.

Types of liquid wallpaper

This finishing material is notable for its versatility: liquid wallpaper looks great on walls and ceilings, while it goes well with other types of decor. Wallpaper can be applied to any base, including curved elements, while the coating is uniform and seamless.

Liquid wallpaper is a mixture of cellulose or textile fibers with various additives. In stores, they are presented in the form of a dry composition, which is diluted with water before use, or a ready-made solution. The application technology is similar to plastering, for this feature liquid wallpaper is sometimes called silk plaster.

Liquid wallpaper are:

  • smooth or embossed, depending on the size of the fibers;
  • colored or white - they can be tinted to the desired shade;
  • homogeneous or with additives that give a certain texture;
  • silk, cotton, cellulose or mixed.

The size of the fibers in the composition of the mixture affects the texture of the finished coating: the more pronounced the fibers, the more rough the finished coating. Also, a relief surface can be achieved using the application technology - a wet layer of wallpaper is rolled with a texture roller, which gives it a certain pattern.

The choice of shades of liquid wallpaper is quite wide, you can easily find a color that suits almost any interior. It should be remembered that after application they will be a couple of tones darker than in dry form. If you can’t choose a shade, you can use a white composition in combination with any water-soluble color scheme.

Various additives in the composition of the wallpaper allow you to give the finished coating an original look. Inclusions of stone chips or metallic sequins, silk and cotton threads, cellulose fibers of various sizes create completely different effects.

Prices for liquid wallpaper

liquid wallpaper

Thanks to this, you can choose a composition for any style of decoration, from strict classics to modern.

Not only the appearance depends on the material from which the mixture for wallpaper is made. The basis of liquid wallpaper affects the durability and performance properties. The price of wallpaper also depends on the base material.

Cellulosic formulations

The most budgetary type of liquid wallpaper, the low price of mixtures is due to cheap raw materials. In addition to cellulose fibers, their composition includes adhesive components and plasticizers, dyes, and in some cases decorative additives. Cellulose itself has adhesive properties, so this type of wallpaper has excellent adhesion to any surface.

Cellulosic compositions are not highly resistant to ultraviolet radiation, so they are best used in small rooms with moderate temperature and lighting, for example, in a corridor.

Cotton compounds

The basis of such liquid wallpaper is crushed cotton fibers, due to which it is possible to obtain a soft structure with a matte sheen. Cotton is an environmentally friendly material with a high degree of heat and sound insulation, so cotton liquid wallpaper is often used in a nursery or bedroom.

Silk compositions

The most expensive type of liquid wallpaper, they contain natural silk fibers, shiny and durable, which determines the durability and decent appearance. Silk wallpapers practically do not fade, they can be used in rooms with panoramic windows and bright daylight. With the help of decorative additives, silk wallpapers are given different textures, from the effect of a fabric finish to marble imitation.

Mixed lineups

These mixtures contain cellulose and fabric fibers in various proportions, which makes it possible to obtain a finish with high decorative properties for little money. The price of such wallpapers depends on the percentage of silk or cotton fibers in them, as well as decorative additives.

Note! You can independently give any liquid wallpaper a decorative effect by adding additional components to them. Flocks (crushed mineral additives) and glitters (glitters made of metal or mica) will give even ordinary compositions a unique look.

Advantages and disadvantages of liquid wallpaper

Before making a choice in favor of liquid wallpaper, you should consider their features, advantages and disadvantages. This will help to avoid disappointment during further operation.

Advantages of liquid wallpaper on the ceiling:

  • environmentally friendly material, does not interfere with moisture and air exchange;
  • smooth seamless coating that hides defects and cracks;
  • no need for complex surface preparation;
  • lack of folds, creases in the corners and on uneven surfaces;
  • the ability to achieve with the help of color and decorative additives almost any shade and effect, as well as create a decorative painting;
  • the possibility of obtaining various textures, from smooth to embossed.

In addition, if a section of wallpaper is damaged, it can be carefully repaired.

  • a rather expensive type of finish, 2-5 times more expensive than ordinary wallpaper;
  • does not have moisture resistance, peels off when wet;
  • cheap cellulose formulations fade and lose their appearance over time;
  • require certain skills for application.

The disadvantages of liquid wallpaper are fully compensated by the right choice, application and operation. To extend the life of the finish, it is recommended to choose compositions with a silk or cotton content of at least 30-40%, and moisture resistance can be increased by covering them with acrylic water-repellent varnish. To properly apply the composition to the ceiling, you need to follow the recommendations of the wallpaper manufacturer and the finishing technology.

The technology of applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling

The process of finishing the ceiling with liquid wallpaper can be divided into two stages:

  • ceiling preparation;
  • application of the prepared mixture.

Special attention should be paid to the preparation of the ceiling - the adhesion of the wallpaper mixture and the durability of the finish depend on this.

Ceiling preparation

Preparatory work largely depends on the presence and type of old finish. The easiest way is when it comes to a new building with a rough finish - in this case, only a thorough priming of the surface is required. If there is a layer or on the ceiling, they must be removed. Step-by-step instructions for preparing a ceiling with different types of old coatings for liquid wallpaper are given in table 1.

Table 1. Preparation of the ceiling for liquid wallpaper.

View of the old coatingCeiling preparation technology

At least two layers of deep penetration primer are applied to the ceiling with an interval of 3-4 hours for each layer to dry. The primer composition of the "Betonkontakt" type is applied with a roller or a wide brush, alternating the directions of strokes in each layer. After the last layer has dried, liquid wallpaper can be applied.

Such ceilings do not require alignment, since the gaps in them are well filled with the composition of liquid wallpaper. It is enough to prime and dry. When applying the first layer of primer on drywall, do not wet the roller or brush too much - this will lead to soaking of the cardboard surface and delamination of the plasterboard.

Wallpaper from the ceiling is removed. The sheets are moistened with water or a special wallpaper remover, left for a few minutes and removed with a spatula. Rinse off adhesive residue with water. Liquid wallpaper is moistened with a roller or spray, after swelling of the surface they are scraped off with a wide spatula. Next, the ceiling is primed using conventional technology.

These coatings must be removed. Chalk and lime whitewash is moistened with water or special washing solutions, after which they are scraped off with a spatula and the ceiling is finally washed with water. Acrylic-based paints and enamels can simply be cleaned with a spatula or angle grinder in places of delamination. After cleaning, the surface is washed from dust and primed as described above.

Spots of various origins may appear on the ceiling during the operation of the building. The most common are rust from fittings or nails, greasy stains from splashes or oil fumes in the kitchen, as well as salt and lime stains from leaks. Rust can be removed with weak solutions of hydrochloric or phosphoric acid. The acid is applied with a brush to the stains, kept until the rust dissolves and washed with water. After drying, the protruding reinforcement and other metal elements are sealed with moisture-resistant putty or painted with moisture-resistant paints, for example, white enamel.

Grease stains are well cleaned with warm alkaline solutions and surfactant products. To remove them from the ceiling, use laundry soap, soda ash and dishwashing detergent. Foamed warm solution is applied to the stain, kept for several minutes and washed. You can do this several times until the stains are completely removed.

Divorces from water leaks are washed with any detergent with a brush, as a rule, this is enough. Difficult stains are wiped with table vinegar or Whiteness. After removing the stains, the ceiling is ready for priming and further finishing.

Cracks and crevices are sealed with plaster, a leveling layer of putty with a fine-grained structure is applied. Since liquid wallpaper wets the ceiling when applied, it is better to use moisture-resistant putty compositions based on cement or polymers. After the putty has dried, the ceiling is primed in 2-3 layers with mandatory drying. Start applying wallpaper.

Note! Work on the removal of old coatings is often associated with a large amount of dust and dirt, so it is better to take furniture and household items out of the room or carefully cover them with plastic wrap.

Calculation of the required number of wallpapers

Manufacturers of liquid wallpaper, as a rule, indicate on the packaging the area to be covered based on the coating thickness of 1-1.5 mm. For a standard package weighing 1 kg, this figure is usually 3-6 m 2 (depending on the texture). If there are minor damages or irregularities on the ceiling, the wallpaper layer in them may turn out to be slightly larger, this must be taken into account when buying.

To calculate the number of bags of dry mix, you need to divide the area of \u200b\u200bthe room by the minimum covered area specified by the manufacturer. For example, for a room of 20 m 2 and a dry mix with a consumption of 1 kg per 3-4 m 2, you need to divide 20 by 3. The result will be 6.6 packages, this amount must be rounded up to a larger integer, that is, up to 7.

It is not worth saving and calculating at the minimum consumption - wallpapers in different batches may differ slightly in shade, so it will be difficult to buy exactly the same ones. In addition, if during the work you do not have enough material, a noticeable joint will remain on the ceiling.

Note! If you notice a difference in shade in different packages, mix the dry mix in a separate container. You can dilute it with water both immediately and as needed.

Applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling

After preparing the ceiling and buying the mixture, you can start finishing. The technology and step-by-step instructions for applying liquid wallpaper are given in table 2.

Table 2. Finishing the ceiling with liquid wallpaper - step by step instructions.

Steps, illustrationsDescription of actions

The dry mixture is kneaded with water, taking into account the time for the swelling of the solution. This time is indicated on the package and can be from 15 minutes to several hours. The required amount of clean water is poured into a plastic container of sufficient volume - it is indicated on the package. The water temperature should be between 20-25 degrees Celsius. Do not use warm water, with it the composition will turn out to be too viscous.
When using white wallpaper, add the right amount of water-soluble color to the water and stir it completely. The resulting shade can be selected according to the table on the jar of color, based on the ratio of the volume of the finished solution and the tinting paste. Decorative additives are introduced into the dry mixture, mixing it with your hands. Pour the dry composition into the water, constantly stirring it. A small amount of wallpaper can be kneaded by hand, but it is better to use a construction mixer at medium speed. Stirring too fast will saturate the mixture with air bubbles, making it difficult to apply. The mixture is infused for the time indicated on the package, mixed again and proceed to application.

The resulting texture of the wallpaper depends on the direction of movement of the trowel. With longitudinal, transverse or circular movements, the fibers lay down in different ways. For a fine-grained structure, this is not so important, but if the wallpaper composition contains large fibers, the sections of the ceiling can be very different. You can experiment in advance on a flat surface to choose the best method.

Unlike the technology of gluing paper wallpaper, when applying liquid wallpaper, it is recommended to fix all elements of the ceiling decor before finishing. Skirting boards, moldings and stucco moldings will not stick to the porous surface of liquid wallpaper, it is recommended to stick or fix them in advance.

The finished mixture is applied to the ceiling with a trowel or a wide spatula in a thin layer, then leveled with a plastic grater or roller, giving the desired texture. The wallpaper is applied in sections, with each next one starting from the border of the already applied one, leveling it. To make the joints invisible, it is recommended to process the entire surface of the ceiling in one go, before the coating dries. You can also apply liquid wallpaper with a spray gun with a wide nozzle. In this case, a sufficiently rough coating is obtained, which can be rolled with a hard roller (to obtain a smooth surface) or textured (to give a relief pattern).

Liquid wallpaper dries within 12-72 hours, depending on the composition and moisture capacity of the surface. During this time, it is better not to ventilate the room and not turn on heaters in it - this way the wallpaper will dry out more evenly. After drying, the surface can be treated with a moisture-resistant varnish using a roller or spray gun. This will extend the life of the wallpaper.

One of the main advantages of wallpapering is that it is not necessary to remove the old coating from the ceiling. But if there is whitewash, then it is advisable to remove it, and then putty the surface twice. Read more details.

With the help of liquid wallpaper, you can not only get a stable and durable coating, but also create amazing decorative effects. Due to this feature, this type of finish is widely used by professional stylists and finishers. Following the above recommendations, you can also realize your ideas and give the ceiling an original and unique look.

In modern apartments, various types of wall, floor and ceiling decoration are used. There are a lot of materials for this kind of work. Traditional whitewashing and paper wallpapers have given way to better types of cladding.

Liquid wallpaper is a modern material that can be applied to walls and ceilings.

The ceiling decoration with liquid wallpaper is gaining more and more popularity.

This coating bears little resemblance to the usual paper, non-woven, fiberglass and other wallpapers. It is more like a decorative stone. On closer inspection, the finish looks like a layer of dense felt.

The material is sold as a dry mix packaged in plastic bags (photo No. 1). The mixture is diluted with water and applied to the surface of walls and ceilings, like ordinary plaster. No rolls, no glue, only the name remains of the wallpaper. The composition of such material without fail includes natural cellulose. Other natural fibers can be added to it: cotton, silk of different colors. The binder is acrylic dispersion, CMC glue. For effect, crumbs of marble, quartz or mica spangles are introduced into the composition.

Figure 1. Liquid wallpaper is sold in bags in the form of a dry mix.

Liquid wallpaper finishes only internal residential and office premises. This environmentally friendly finishing material is ideal for decorating ceilings and walls in children's rooms and bedrooms. It gives the room a special coziness and warmth. Liquid wallpaper is a coating with a fibrous structure. It has excellent soundproofing properties, can improve the acoustic characteristics of the room.

There are several manufacturers of this original finishing material: the domestic company Silk Plaster, which produces 15-20 items, the Turkish company Bayramyx, the French companies Senideco and Fibres de cotex. All products of these companies are of high quality, a wide variety of colors and textures.

Pros and cons of liquid wallpaper

Liquid wallpaper compares favorably with decorative plaster and conventional roll wallpaper:

The palette of liquid wallpaper is not large, but manufacturers are expanding the range of colors more and more.

  1. They do not require a lot of space to prepare and use.
  2. They do not need to be cut to size and smeared with adhesive.
  3. When using them, there are practically no residues.
  4. Walls and ceilings do not require careful alignment.
  5. Liquid wallpaper does not create dust, has no smell.
  6. When dried, the wallpaper does not emit substances harmful to people and pets.
  7. They are applied to any vertical or horizontal surface without a single joint.
  8. The material fills all the bumps and gaps between the ceiling and the wall.
  9. The finished mixture is very plastic, does not crack after laying.
  10. Liquid wallpaper coating breathes, creates additional sound insulation and thermal protection.
  11. Unlike vinyl wallpaper, liquid wallpaper does not create a greenhouse effect.
  12. The finished coating of walls and ceilings does not attract dust and odors.
  13. When burning, the coating does not emit any toxic gases.
  14. Damaged places are very simply repaired, leaving no visible traces of repair.
  15. The service life of the coating without changing its color and other properties is 10 years or more.
  16. The ready-to-use composition can be stored in a hermetically sealed plastic container for several months.
  17. With this material, you can create various patterns and applications on the ceiling.

The disadvantages of this material are:

  1. High price. The most expensive are silk wallpapers. Cellulosic ones are cheaper.
  2. The choice of colors is still small.
  3. The coating of liquid wallpaper is not highly water resistant, they cannot be washed.

Preparatory work

Liquid wallpaper is applied to a prepared, clean surface.

Liquid wallpaper can be applied on surfaces made of OSB, brick, cement, drywall, metal, wood, clay. On any of these surfaces, they hold perfectly and do not peel off. Surface preparation is reduced to the achievement of the following indicators:

  1. The ceiling must not have separating sections.
  2. The surface of the ceiling should not actively absorb moisture.

To prepare and apply wallpaper, you will need a basin, wallpaper spatula and water.

  1. From the surface of the ceiling, remove the remains of fallen plaster, old wallpaper, putty.
  2. Fill large gaps. To do this, you can use both a special putty and a small amount of diluted liquid wallpaper.
  3. Prime the ceiling surface. The primer is better to choose a colorless deep penetration. You can use a white primer. It is recommended to dilute the finished primer concentrate with a triple amount of water. Primer Ceresit CT17 is not suitable, because after a while it can cause unpleasant yellow spots on the wallpaper. White water-based paint can be used as a primer. If the ceiling was whitewashed with chalk, then the primer can be done independently. Its composition: slaked lime - 3 kg; laundry soap - 200 g; drying oil - 100 g.
  4. If there are fittings, corners and other metal objects on the ceiling, they must be painted over with PF enamel, latex or oil paint.
  5. Roughen the ceiling by applying a primer containing quartz dust. You can use a regular primer by adding fine sand to it.
  6. If the ceiling is covered with oil paint or enamel, then they do not need to be removed. It is enough to apply a primer on them.

Preparation of liquid wallpaper

Preparation of wallpaper: the mixture is poured into a basin and diluted with clean water at 20-30 ° C.

  1. Packets with dry mix and fillers should be shaken vigorously several times. This will help to avoid the appearance of lumps in the working mixture.
  2. Prepare a container for diluting the composition. You can stir the wallpaper in a basin, bath, bucket. To dilute a package of dry mix, a container with a volume of about 8 liters is required. Practice shows that it is better to use a round container with a diameter of 40-60 cm and a depth of up to 25-30 cm for these purposes. After work, the dishes are easy to clean, so even kitchen utensils can be used.
  3. Water must be clean, its temperature is 20-30 degrees. The temperature itself does not affect the quality of the working composition, but it is more pleasant to work with warm water.
  4. The contents of the package are poured into the container.
  5. About 5 liters of clean drinking water at a comfortable temperature is poured.
  6. The mixture is thoroughly mixed by hand until a homogeneous consistency, reminiscent of heavy cream. Various stirrers and mixers are not recommended. If necessary, water is added in small portions.
  7. Lumps from the solution must be removed immediately.
  8. Let the solution soak for 20-30 minutes.
  9. If decorative additives are included in liquid wallpaper, they should be poured in front of all other components.

It should be remembered that a mixture that is too liquid will drain from the ceiling, and a composition that is too thick is difficult to apply to the surface.

Coating the ceiling

The finished mixture should be homogeneous, without lumps.

The working mixture is applied to the surface of the ceiling with a Plexiglas spatula. Sometimes it is included in the kit along with the dry mix. You can use a stainless steel tool. It is recommended to take a position so that the ceiling level is as close to eye level as possible. It's better to be on the table. If the ceilings are high, then you will have to use a stable ladder.

The spatula must be held so that a small angle forms between its plane and the ceiling (photo No. 2). Do not press too hard on the spatula, as is done when applying plaster or putty. The mass should not be compressed. It is better if it remains loose, it will form a certain relief on the surface of the ceiling.

The process of applying liquid wallpaper resembles spreading caviar on bread. With strong pressure on the spatula, the texture is lost, with insufficient pressure, material consumption increases. The skill is acquired very quickly. With the correct application of the finished working mixture, the layer thickness should be only 1-2 mm. A package of dry composition is enough for 4 sq.m of area. Corners and irregularities slightly increase material consumption.

After covering the entire surface of the ceilings with wallpaper, you need to look at your work from the side. There should be no sagging and bumps, the original color of the ceiling should not show through the coating. If defects are found, they must be corrected immediately. This is done easily and simply until the mixture has dried.

To prevent the formation of visible joints, the mixture must be applied to the entire surface without stopping. The surface covered with liquid wallpaper must be allowed to dry naturally. This usually takes 24-48 hours. You can open windows slightly so that excess moisture evaporates faster. Liquid wallpaper goes well with other finishing materials. This allows you to create various figures, panels, reliefs on the ceiling (photo No. 3).

Liquid wallpaper protection

The wallpaper is covered with acrylic varnish, thus protecting it from moisture and absorbing odors.

Liquid wallpaper has a low degree of moisture resistance, so it is better to protect the finished coating from moisture vapor on it. Acrylic lacquer is ideal for this. It does not contain harmful substances, is an environmentally friendly composition. After the varnish dries, a waterproof coating is formed, which strengthens the material and allows wet cleaning.

Acrylic varnish is recommended to be used even before applying liquid wallpaper to the ceiling. It can be added to the dry mix when mixing the working solution. After the coating has dried, a final thin layer of varnish is applied to it. But all these procedures are not mandatory. With proper use, the varnish consumption is approximately the following: with one-stage application, 1 liter of varnish is enough for 18-20 sq.m, when applied in 2 stages - for 4 sq.m.

Figure 3. Using liquid wallpaper, you can create any pattern or texture.

  1. All work is carried out at a room temperature of at least +10 degrees.
  2. The room must be well ventilated.
  3. The material can be removed from the surface, mixed and reapplied up to 4 times.
  4. To change the color, coloring pigments are added to the solution.
  5. The liquid wallpaper coating applied to the ceiling can be repaired. When repairing, the damaged part is moistened. This can be done using a special spray gun. Soaked wallpaper with a spatula or other similar tool is removed from the surface and collected in a clean container. The bare section of the ceiling is treated with a primer. The removed wallpaper is soaked, mixed and applied to the repair site. After drying, it becomes completely invisible.
  6. If the ceiling has significant irregularities, drywall may be the best material for leveling it.

To create a pattern on the ceiling, proceed as follows:

  1. The desired drawing is applied with a pencil.
  2. The finished mixture is applied in a thin layer, slightly going beyond the markup of the pattern.
  3. With a small spatula, the material is shifted to the borders of the pattern.
  4. After the wallpaper layer has dried, the next color is applied, preventing them from mixing.
  5. Separate contours, if desired, can be marked with a marker, beads, sparkles and other decorative elements.

Liquid wallpaper is an excellent finishing material for walls and ceilings. Preparation of the working composition and its application to the surface are not particularly difficult. This work can be done by a person who does not have special training. With the help of such material, you can create all kinds of ornaments on the ceiling and even whole paintings, and to complete the work you need only desire and patience. Processing ceilings with liquid wallpaper has a great future.
