A simpler version was called the iPhone XR - unlike older models, it has an LCD screen instead of OLED, a single camera like on the iPhone 8 and an aluminum body. But the processor is the same as in the flagships - A12 Bionic. Available 6.1-inch smartphone already in six colors: white, black, blue, yellow, coral and red.

This time, the Apple 2018 presentation did without big words and incredible numbers. We immediately started announcing new products: the Apple Watch, which has been published for a long time, and three new iPhones.

What exactly was presented?

Last year, three new iPhones were shown at once. This fall, the situation has not changed. We still have three new items and mess in the head. But let's try to figure it out.

Or the cheaper iPhone turned into the iPhone XR. For this branch of smartphones, a real revolution has happened. A huge, frameless screen, a new processor, a pumped battery, a portrait mode in the camera and a bunch of new colors. Just a bomb!

Until recently, the flagship got a successor - the iPhone XS. The same size, but more pumped smartphone for the same money.

But s jumped over everyone and turned into the iPhone XS Max. The same features as the XS, only with a huge screen and more pleasant autonomy.

And now in more detail. Let's go through the chronology of the presentation.

iPhone XS

Successor and star of the program. It costs a thousand dollars in the base, like the previous ten.

Design

Its main feature remained in place. The 5.8-inch screen retained its previous resolution of 2436 by 1125 pixels, which gives a density of 458 dpi.

Of course, an OLED matrix is ​​​​used. As always, the best. Contrast ratio 1,000,000:1, brightness 625 nits, True Tone, support for HDR10, Dolby Vision, P3 profile, 3D Touch - everything that was before is in place.

It is reported that the glass front and rear is now even stronger. And coupled with surgical steel, the device received protection against water according to the IP68 standard, which means immersion in water up to 2 meters and for 30 minutes. We were told right from the stage that if you dropped your smartphone into the pool, then it's okay. Nothing will happen to the device. You can also pour juice or beer over the novelty. Again, no problem.

By the way, it was IP67.

As expected, a new color was introduced - gold. It looks fresh, expensive and solid. As required from the new colors.

Of course, inside we are waiting for the new A12 Bionic processor, which is now created using a 7-nanometer process technology. It used to be 10 nm. This means more efficient power consumption and increased performance. In numbers, the situation looks like this:

• 4 regular cores show the same performance, but now consume 50% less energy
• 4-core graphics accelerator overclocked one and a half times

In addition, the new chipset includes an 8-core neural unit responsible for machine learning.

Another interesting number. Thanks to the 8-core neural block, the new “stone” is capable of processing up to 5 trillion operations. A11 Bionic boasted a ceiling of 600 billion operations. In addition, the Neural Engine thanks to the Core ML platform is up to 9 times faster than the corresponding system in the A11 Bionic. At the same time, the neural block consumes 10 times less energy.

Compared to the top ten, the new smartphone has not received a change in numbers. Rear mounted modules of 12 megapixels each. The six-element lens boasts an aperture of f/1.8 for a regular lens and f/2.4 for telephoto. In addition, there is a double optical stabilization.

With exactly the same numbers, Apple claims that image quality has improved. This is facilitated by several new technologies.

Take at least Smart HDR, on the conscience of which the improved processing of light and dark areas in the pictures. In addition, the algorithms have learned to more accurately determine the depth of field in portrait mode. For this, the “Depth” function or a variable aperture is also used: from f / 1.4 to f / 16 - any value. You can adjust the degree of blur both directly in the process of shooting, and after, in the Photos application.

Let me remind you that up to this point, a variable aperture has only been found in the Samsung Galaxy S9, and . Moreover, in Korean flagships, the physical aperture blades are responsible for this, which either narrow or open. How things are in the iPhone XS is still unknown. Most likely, the software is responsible for the process.

In addition, "Depth" is available for the front TrueDepth camera.

Regarding video recording, the improvements are purely evolutionary. More detailed study of dark areas, improved picture in low light and finally stereo sound recording. Surprisingly, until recently, no iPhone could write stereo. This gap has now been closed.

Let's just list a few more new features:

But do not rush to rejoice. The first "sim card" will be the familiar Nano SIM. But the role of the second is played by eSIM or digital SIM card.

The only country in the world where there will be two slots for two real SIM cards is China. Russia and other regions in flight. Although, perhaps, some impudent deputy will demand that Apple change the situation. If anything, I didn't hint anything to anyone.

iPhone XS Max

We look at the most expensive and fancy device, and at the same time we determine how it differs from the iPhone XS. The main difference was a huge, frameless screen of 6.5 inches.

For such a diagonal, engineers had to increase the resolution to 2688 x 1242 pixels. However, in total they give a density of the same 458 pixels per inch.

This is where the differences between the Max version and the regular XS end. Well, except for a slightly upgraded battery life and prices. About the latter later.

iPhone XR

This is a smartphone, so to speak, entry-level. The most affordable, with the latest filling, now with a frameless screen, Face ID, a new processor and a relatively compact body. Despite the 6.1-inch LCD panel.

A whole bunch of new colors suggest a repeat of the iPhone 5C experience? Bad experience. I am sure that a new run with a bunch of colors at the start will be much more successful. Below in the photo, by the way, all available colors. There are a lot of them, they are all bright and juicy.

It's a little disappointing that an IPS screen was placed in the smartphone, and not AMOLED, as in older brothers. Nevertheless, actual buns, among which, for example, True Tone, P3 profile are still announced.

Like more sophisticated relatives, XR received a top-end processor. And I bet in advance that this particular smartphone will become the most productive in the history of the company. The situation is repeated with when the device received a powerful processor, but a noticeably smaller number of pixels for processing them. Hence the superiority, which, however, is noticeable only in synthetic tests.

One camera is installed at the back, but “completely new”:

Most importantly, even with a single camera, portrait mode is now available. Now, those who want to save money will not be left out of modern photo technologies. This makes me happy.

The front camera also knows how to blur the background, moreover, like all other smartphones with the effects of daylight, studio and contour light. Depth mode in place.

It is also important to mention autonomy. The novelty lives for an hour and a half more than. Decent score.
