Sequence of work

The optimal distance between the uprights is 40-45 cm (if a pull-out bed is made, the distance between the uprights in this place should be slightly more than its width). Often the racks are not attached to the floor, but to the support frame made of timber, if it is not fixed, such a podium can be moved. If the bed is double, in the middle you need a partition made of a board or a bar, based on an additional row of racks.
- On top of the racks, the beams are laid and fastened with the help of corners and self-tapping screws, forming the top of the frame frame. You need to make sure that the posts are perpendicular to the floor, their upper plane is strictly horizontal, the beams are laid perpendicular to them, and that all elements are firmly connected to each other.
An alternative to racks and beams is to assemble a solid frame of the desired height from boards or several tiers of timber. The consumption of material will increase, but the design will be more durable. If a podium with sliding elements is made, only the walls of the podium, parallel to the side walls of the boxes, can be made solid.
- Marking is carried out for sliding elements, planks (bars) are attached to the bottom of the racks, forming their frames, and partitions to them. Partitions between boxes are not always made, but it is better to install them, they serve as additional stiffeners.
- If it is planned to lay the mattress not on a deaf skin, but on lamellas, it is necessary to fill the boards on the frame.

Podium sheathing technique
If the mattress will be laid on the podium from above, and it is intended only for sleeping, laminated chipboard can be used for sheathing. If the top of the podium consists of lamellas, the side walls should protrude a couple of centimeters beyond the horizontal plane so that the sides that fix the mattress are formed. In this case, a minimum gap between it and the walls is sufficient. If the upper plane of the podium is solid, and made of laminated chipboard or other attractive material, it can significantly exceed the size of the mattress, in this case the sides are not needed. The headboard often uses a higher panel that forms the back, on the sides it can protrude beyond the podium.
For a podium subjected to significant load, chipboard is not suitable. Therefore, for a pull-out bed, rough sheathing is usually made of thick plywood or OSB, and carpet, laminate or other materials are attached to it from above. Plywood is fixed to the frame with self-tapping screws, carpet can be attached to it using a furniture stapler. If a laminate is used as a finishing sheathing, a substrate is laid between it and the plywood. Adhesive-based PVC corners can be used around the perimeter to mask joints and provide additional fixation.
Retractable elements
A pull-out bed is usually made in the form of a large box, inside of which a mattress is placed. The simplest solution is to purchase a ready-made slatted bottom for a mattress at a furniture store, stuff plywood sides on the sides and attach wheels.
The bottom can be solid. If the dimensions of the podium allow, drawers can be made on the side (or on both sides) of the bed. The boxes are knocked down from plywood, it is necessary to use a square to align the right angle between adjacent elements, avoiding distortions.
Rail runners are attached to the side walls of the boxes, and the counterpart - the rails - to the frame partitions. It is important to fasten the skids with the same offset from the front wall of the box, and the rails at the same height. To do this, you can use a piece of plywood of the appropriate thickness as a gasket. The boxes must be put in place, made sure that they move freely, removed and numbered. The length of the guides does not exceed 60 cm, if you make a box of greater depth, it cannot be fully extended.
After assembling and "breaking in" the sliding elements, you can proceed to the sheathing of their front panels. Usually, the same material is used for this as for podium sheathing, but you can experiment with tones of the same range or contrasting colors. Front panels should almost completely cover the elements of the frame, but not protrude beyond it. There should be sufficient clearance between the panels of adjacent drawers so that they do not cling to each other.
The podium bed is ready, it remains to put the mattress in a box or on the podium and install the sliding elements in place.

Between them, at the corners and at some distance from each other, racks of bars 5x5 cm long, equal to the height of the podium, are installed. It is necessary to fasten the bottom row to the floor, the top row to the wall, and the free sides will be held by the racks.
Additionally, two horizontal lintels and racks are installed, dividing the entire width into three equal parts - the locations of the future location of the laundry boxes. To ensure the installation of retractable elements in the future, cut-to-size plywood or MDF sheets are screwed to the lintels.
At the final stage, the podium for the bed is covered on top with the selected material and the stationary side sections are sewn up. At this stage of the assembly, the frame takes on its final shape and it already becomes clear what the result will be after finishing and installing the boxes.
Manufacturing and installation of drawers
The manufacture of boxes for linen must begin with cutting blanks. For each element, you need two side parts 60 cm long and high, which corresponds to the dimensions of the elevation. In addition, the rear and front walls are being constructed. Their width is equal to a third of the entire width of the structure minus the dimensions of the two transverse beams. All four blanks must be connected with metal corners, and the bottom should be sewn up with a piece of fiberboard.
At the end, in the center of the front wall, mark the installation location of the handles, drill holes and mount the selected fittings.
In order for the drawers to slide out, you need to equip them with a mechanism on bearings, screwing one part closer to the upper edge of the side walls. The second half of the device (guides) is attached to the internal partitions of the frame before the stage of work on the overlap of the pedestal.
The exact horizontal position of the sliding mechanism is important to ensure easy and durable movement between the floor and the base on which the mattress will be located.
Surface finishing
After the whole structure is assembled, its mobile parts are checked for performance, they move on to finishing and decorating.
To do this, you can use carpet or linoleum. The preservation of the natural look of wood by opening it with stain and varnish is also welcome.
Previously, the entire surface is carefully sanded and impregnated with a primer with antifungal properties. The front and side open parts of the podium can be hidden with laminated chipboard, and the ends of the drawers are covered with veneer or rubber bands, planted on glue.
The corners of the structure can be protected with a furniture metal or plastic corner, which will give the product an aesthetic and complete look. Plinths are installed in the corners between the floor and the walls.
Often, a soft headboard is mounted to that part of the wall where the narrow part of the mattress will be located. To make it, you need to glue foam rubber with a thickness of at least 5 mm on a plywood sheet. The filler is covered with fabric, the edges of which are fixed with a construction stapler on the back of the plywood.
