Do-it-yourself country sliding gates. Do-it-yourself swing gates, drawings, videos, step by step instructions. Benefits of swing gates

Each owner strives to ensure that his dacha is as comfortable and beautiful as possible. Of course, any dacha begins with a gate, so this element must be given no less attention than other objects. Therefore, in this article we will consider how to make beautiful and high-quality metal country gates with our own hands.

Types of country gate designs

Currently, the following types of gate designs are the most common:

  • Swing - are two wings that swing open in one direction or the other. Their production does not take much time and effort. The inconvenience of this design is its bulkiness in the open position - often there are objects near the doors that prevent them from opening.
  • Retractable - the undoubted advantage of this design is that the wings do not swing open outward, but move out to the side. Their other advantage is the ability to open both manually and automatically. True, the manufacture of such a design will require much more time and money.

Retractable structures can also be attributed to lifting structures. Their peculiarity lies in the fact that they rise up, and do not roll back to the side.

I must say that it is more expedient to make swing gates on your own, especially if there is no such work experience, since this design is simpler.

Gate manufacturing

Project

First of all, you need to make drawings of country gates with your own hands. All dimensions of the structure and its features should be marked on them. In addition, the diagram should depict its relative position with other objects on the site.

Note!
In the drawings, it is necessary to describe as accurately as possible all the elements of the future product, as this will subsequently facilitate its manufacture.
Therefore, the design should be depicted from three sides.

After the drawings are ready, you can proceed directly to the manufacture of the structure.

materials

Before starting work, you should prepare the following materials:

  • Decking or sheets of metal;
  • Metal pipes;
  • Metal corners or square pipes;
  • Sand and cement;
  • Four hinges (you can use hinges for garage doors).

Installation of supports

Steel pipes with a diameter of at least 100 mm should be used as supports for the sashes. You can replace the pipe with a steel profile, for example, an I-beam or a channel with a shelf width of at least 100 mm.

Note!
The stiffer and stronger the supports, the longer the product will last.

The instructions for installing the supports are as follows:

  • First of all, it is necessary to mark the soil, indicating the location of the gate and indicating the location of the supports.
  • Next, the pipes should be cut to obtain supports of the required length, in accordance with the drawings.
  • Then the installation of supports is carried out, for which it is necessary to dig holes. Since when opening and closing the wings, variable dynamic loads appear on the axis, the supports must be installed more securely than the fence posts. The optimum depth of the pits is 0.8 meters.
  • After installing the supports in the pits, they should be poured with concrete. In this case, the vertical position of the supports must be checked with a building level.

Note!
The width of the gate must be calculated carefully so that the gate is not too wide.
The wider they are, the more significant the wind will exert on them.
At the same time, the gate must be wide enough for a car to enter the yard.

I must say that the racks do not have to be metal. For example, you can lay out pillars of brick or other material.

Sash manufacturing

While the concrete hardens, you can begin to manufacture the wings, in accordance with the drawings. The design of the sashes is a frame to which corrugated board or metal sheets are welded. I must say that the price of corrugated board is usually lower than metal sheets, since the sheets of this material are much thinner.

To increase rigidity, several crossbars are usually welded to each frame. For example, a common option is one horizontal and two vertical bars.

Thus, first of all, in the manufacture of gates, it is necessary to cut a corner or square pipes into segments of the desired length and weld a frame out of them. When performing this work, it is extremely important to ensure the accuracy of the angles.

Note!
In the manufacture of frames, it should be borne in mind that after installing the sashes, a distance of at least 8-12 millimeters must remain between them.

After the frames are made, sheets of the required size should be cut out of the metal and welded to the frame. On one of the sashes there should be a limiting bar that will hide the gap between the sashes.

loops

An important point in the manufacture of the structure is the installation of loops. This work requires extreme precision, since the correct location of the gate and their performance depend on it.

As mentioned above, garage hinges can be used as awnings. For sashes of standard sizes, four hinges are sufficient, i.e. two loops per sash. If the gate is large and powerful, 6 loops should be used.

Before installation, metal plates are welded to each of the hinges, which in turn are welded to the supports. The second part of the hinges is welded to the wings, after which the structure is installed on the supporting pillars.

After that, it remains to complete the shutter mechanism. Most often, it consists of two L-shaped stopper pins, which are located at the bottom of the gate.

Country gates are an important element of the fence built around a country house, its visiting card. They must be reliable and practical, equipped with a gate for convenience, and their appearance should correspond to the general concept of the fence. Gates that meet the listed requirements can be made and installed by each skilled owner with their own hands, choosing the appropriate design, materials and sizes of the wings.

Metal swing gates for summer cottages

The choice of materials for manufacturing

To keep the concept of the fence, it is better to make the entrance doors from the same material as the fence. The algorithm is traditional: metal frames with hinges are made, which are then sheathed with a suitable material from the list:

  • boards of different widths;
  • polycarbonate sheets;
  • art forging products;
  • smooth or profiled metal sheets.

The same building materials will be used to make a gate if it is placed in a separate intake opening. Frames for large and small sashes are usually made of steel pipes of rectangular or round section, selected according to the size and weight of the structure. Standard swing gates for summer cottages up to 2.5 m high, designed in width for the entrance of a car, are made of pipes with a section of 60x40 mm with a wall thickness of 2 mm.

A typical scheme for the manufacture of a frame for country swing gates with a wicket

Country gates can also be welded from round steel pipes with a diameter of 32x3 mm, although this task is somewhat more difficult. The easiest way is to put together the doors with your own hands from wooden beams, as was done in the old days. Such solutions are being implemented less and less, since they are inferior to metal in reliability and durability.

Swing gates with a wooden frame - practically not used due to fragility

In terms of price-quality ratio, the best option for giving is a metal base with light filling - polycarbonate, corrugated board or wooden boards. Sheathing made of steel sheets with a thickness of 1.2-2 mm will make the structure somewhat heavier, although it will add rigidity to it. Forged products are the most expensive and heaviest material, but they will also last longer than others.

When choosing materials for the manufacture of gates to the country house, it is worth taking care of locking tools and handles. Buy a simple but reliable lock with a comfortable handle and a latch for closing from the inside. You will also need metal hinges designed for the weight of the structure.

Design Options

As a rule, the entrance opening in the fence of the dacha is filled with swing gates, consisting of two leaves and equipped with a gate. Such a solution is quite simple and inexpensive to implement, convenient to use and time-tested. There are only two drawbacks to swinging doors: they need a large platform for opening, and in winter it will have to be cleared of snow and ice.

In practice, country gates of various designs and layouts are used:

  1. Double doors with built-in wicket. They allow you to save space and effectively use the entire width of the opening, but at the same time they quickly loosen from the frequent opening of the front door, and therefore are considered unreliable.
  2. The same, with a separate entrance for people, and the door and one gate leaf are attached to a common post. The design is reliable and durable, but takes up more space.
  3. The same, with sashes of different lengths. The big one plays the role of a gate, the small one acts as a gate. Due to a decent weight, the long part of the gate sags more over time and often touches the ground. There is a discrepancy in the height of the short and long parts, which causes the appearance of the structure to suffer.
  4. The classics of the genre are the usual double-leaf gates. There is only one drawback - for the passage of people you need to open one of the parts, since there is no separate door.

When building fences with your own hands and decorating the central entrance at the dacha, options No. 2 and 4 are usually implemented, where the gate is not located in the gate alignment or arranged elsewhere, away from them. Such designs are reliable and durable in operation. If desired, they can be automated by installing special opening drives controlled remotely.

Manufacturing of steel frames

Metal frames, where the filling elements subsequently need to be fixed, are usually made by welding. Bolted connections of profile pipes in this case are unreliable, and they do not look aesthetically pleasing. So in addition to the welding machine and the skills to work with it, for assembly you will need:

  • grinder and high-quality circles for metal;
  • measuring devices - tape measure, square and building level;
  • pencil, chalk;
  • hammer, pliers and other metalwork tools;
  • welding electrodes ANO-21 or similar.

It is most convenient to cook the frames on a flat area, after cutting the pipe into blanks with your own hands to fit the size of the opening between the pillars. The width of the products must be taken into account the installation of hinges and a small gap (about 5 mm) between the wings. In the same way, pieces of pipes are measured and cut to assemble the gate, the height of all frames must strictly match.

Frame welding is performed in the following sequence:

  1. Lay the blanks on the site, align them with a square and connect them on tacks.
  2. Measure 2 diagonals with a tape measure and, if they do not match, align the structure manually.
  3. Seize the brace by welding and check the lengths of the diagonals again in order to prevent skew.
  4. Qualitatively boil all the seams, beating off the slag.

Metal braces are the same pipes welded inside the structure at an angle and flush so that it does not “play” along its own axis. If country gates are made of shaped pipes of small section (40x40 mm), then it is better to put two braces, welding them to an additional cross member, horizontally installed in the middle of the frame.

Swing gate frame diagram

Embedded parts for fixing the lock, latch and other elements should be welded to the finished frames. In the end, all metal must be degreased, covered with primer (for example, GF-021) and painted. Places where it is planned to weld loops do not need to be painted.

Frame cladding

Sheathing of gates and wickets is also carried out on the site and here's why:

  • it is quite inconvenient to fix wooden boards or corrugated board on weight, except to sheathe it with polycarbonate;
  • after facing, the weight of the wings will increase and they may sag, you will have to cut off the canopies and weld them on a new one.

The fastening of light elements and timber to the frame pipes is carried out with self-tapping screws, or better, with self-tapping screws with a turnkey head and an entry in the form of a drill. Then you do not have to make holes with your own hands, the screw drills them for itself. In this case, a screwdriver is used instead of a drill. A solid steel sheet is attached to the frame by welding.

When lining the gate, it is important not to miss the dimensions and not to warp the elements so that you do not have to redo or cut something off and adjust it on weight. The cladding is screwed to the frame in such a way that one sash overlaps the other in the center. Do not rush to install wooden boards near the places of welding of canopies, so as not to spoil their appearance.

Door assembly instructions

It is quite difficult to install country gates alone, so it is better to involve an assistant. The algorithm for performing work is as follows:

  1. Set each sash in a vertical position near the posts and fix with props.
  2. With the help of supports, provide a clearance of 30-50 mm at the bottom for free opening. If the site is not concreted and its relief is uneven, then it is desirable to increase the opening.
  3. Attach the hinges to the poles by welding, check the opening of the wings, their convergence and level in height.
  4. Weld the sheds completely, beat off the slag, prime and paint.

If metal gates are mounted on bolts, then adjustable hinges should be used. But during installation, you should not completely rely on the adjustment, it is better to set the sashes as accurately as possible and only then mark and drill holes.

The gate is a construction of two leaves that close the passage in the fence, which, in fact, is quite primitive. More complex structures may consist of three or more components. They can be opened manually or with the help of a mechanism, which also affects the complexity of their production.

There are quite a few different designs. Due to the ease of installation and functionality, sliding and rolling doors have become popular. These structures can be used not only for their intended purpose, but also as part of the decorative design of the site.

Design features

Using our recommendations, you can make a country gate or gate yourself. Retractable structures, made according to our plan without outside help, will not differ in appearance from the purchased mechanisms, and they will work the same way.

The design of sliding gates has not changed for a long time, but is constantly modernized. Now, two types of sliding options are most often used: rail and cantilever, but the first option is gradually forgotten and goes into oblivion. The console type of structures has gained popularity due to its versatility. To bring it to life, you need a few materials, which can be found in any store.

  • Space saving. Cantilever gates can be installed anywhere. To open them, space is not required in front of or behind the structure, because the canvas is moved to the side.
  • Versatility. A variety of proposed designs allows you to choose the right one for you.
  • Convenience. You can safely leave the car right outside the gate, because it will not become an obstacle when opening them.
  • Appearance. This design looks very elegant, and if you put a beautiful pattern on the canvas, you will also get unique.
  • Durability.

Instruments

To make a gate, we need:

  • Welding machine. It can be conventional or inverter, but, most importantly, it must be rated for 1000 amperes. Of course, the inverter one will cost more, but the connections are much more reliable, and the metal does not deteriorate. With a conventional device, you should be on your guard, because it heats up quickly. We will also need electrodes with a diameter of 2.5–3 mm, which are sold on the construction markets.

  • Bulgarian. It should work with two types of disks. The grinder can be replaced with any tool that can work with metal. We will need the first type of discs for cutting off pieces of metal, and the second for processing it.

  • Air compressor. This device will be needed to evenly apply paint to metal. It can be replaced with a brush, but the gate will turn out with smudges.

  • Pliers.
  • Roulette.
  • A hammer.
  • Riveter.
  • Glasses.
  • Level.
  • Drill.

materials

For work, we need not only tools, but also several types of metal, which is full of metal depots.

For sheathing, we can take any metal that you like. The standard option is corrugated board, but they also use wood with polyester. For processing the skin you need a primer and paint.

We also need cantilever equipment, which consists of beams, top and end rollers, a catcher and two more rollers. When all the materials are purchased, do not rush to start production, but first plan and calculate each of its stages.

Choose a suitable place and prepare it. Decide on the direction of movement of the structure, because the place for this also needs to be prepared.

Production

When you have drawings on hand, and everything you need is nearby, you can get to work. Divide all material into two parts - for jumpers and for the main structure. Measure the necessary pieces of metal and cut it. Do not forget that you need to adhere to the recommended angle at the jumpers. When all the metal is prepared, it should be connected by a welding machine into a common structure.

When the frame is ready, and the beams are waiting for their turn, you should start grinding the structure and then degreasing it. For grinding metal, you must use a grinder with an appropriate disc, but acetone or gasoline is suitable for processing. When the metal dries, you can apply a primer and then paint it.

Before the final drying of the paint, it can take from two hours to three days, so during this time you can concrete the base and install the pillars. You also need to take care of the space for the rollers and the drive.

Installation

The first step is to mount the blocks into the concrete base, for which we need screws and hinges. The main element of the whole structure is a multifunctional beam, to which the rest of the parts will be attached. Finished gates must be installed only after the foundation has been strengthened with cement mortar.

Sheets of corrugated board are attached to the fabricated frame.

So slowly and with minimal effort, we carried out the installation of the gate. This design is very durable, and in terms of functionality it is not inferior to analogues purchased from the manufacturer. For everything to be done correctly, follow our instructions.

Video

Each fenced area has an entrance or entrance. For this purpose, a gate is installed in the fence. They have a different look and are made from a variety of materials. The most important thing is that they fit well into the environment. Gates are made and installed by specialized companies, but you can do it yourself. How to make a gate in the country and install them correctly, and we will discuss further.

Scheme of swing gates from corrugated board for a summer residence.

It will not be difficult to build a sliding gate yourself if you strictly follow all the steps following the instructions. In terms of quality, such gates will not be inferior to sliding gates made by qualified specialists.

So, to make a gate for a summer residence, you will need the following tools:

  1. Welding machine rated for 1000 A.
  2. Bulgarian with two types of disks. One type of disk is needed for cutting blanks for gates, and the other is for processing metal for painting.
  3. Air compressor for painting gates or brush or roller.
  4. Drill or screwdriver.
  5. A hammer.
  6. Level.
  7. Riveter.
  8. Pliers.
  9. Roulette.

Gates for giving not only protect from prying eyes, but also give the site an aesthetic appearance.

For the construction of gates, there are several types of metal. The frame will require a profile pipe 60x40x2.5 or 60x40x2. But you can also use 60x20x2 or 2.5 or 1.5 (it all depends on the size of the future gate). The ideal option for jumpers is 40x20x1.5-2-2.5. The material can be found at metal depots. It is necessary to choose a profile pipe with excellent condition, without signs of rust. The volume of metal is calculated using the drawings drawn up for the gate.

The upholstery is a matter of personal choice. Usually such gates are sheathed with a profiled sheet. But both wood and polyester are excellent options.

The console is the most important part in a sliding gate.

It consists of:

  • 2 rollers;
  • beams;
  • end roller;
  • supporting upper rollers;
  • catcher.

Preparation for work

Before proceeding with the manufacture, you need to determine the dimensions of the structure. To select fittings, you should know the length, width and height. The width is determined based on the need for free passage for vehicles. The size of the street where the land is located should be taken into account. Quite often, at dachas, gates of too large a width (about 5 m) are installed, designed for the entry of cars. The point here is a narrow street and a bad eversion.

For a gate intended for a passenger car, an opening with a width of 2.6 m is enough. To enter a truck, you will need to increase the size to 3.4 meters. The height of the structure can be any. The sashes should be located at a distance of 15 cm from the ground, so that snowfall does not prevent them from opening easily.

The size of the gate is a rather important parameter in the manufacture of their design.

The distance required for rolling depends on the size. The ideal option is a distance that is one and a half times greater than the gate opening. If, for example, the opening is 4 m, then the entire length of the gate is 4x1.5 = 6 m and you will need fittings 6 m long.

After all the materials and tools are purchased, you need to plan the steps and complete the drawings. First, choose and prepare the location of the country gate and determine the direction for the rollback. To draw up a diagram, measure the width, height and clearance between the gates.

Foundation construction

Having drawings and knowing the approximate amount of metal needed, you can start work. To arrange sliding gates, the first step is to install supporting pillars. They are made from a channel, steel pipe, oak beam, brick or concrete pillar. Pillars are installed and concreted at the depth of soil freezing.

The only rule here is that the column should be concreted at a depth of at least 1 m (the freezing point of the soil). Neglecting such a condition, it is possible to violate the accuracy of the movement of the retractable structure, since in winter or spring the pillars can move away from the vertical.

Then they dig a hole with a depth of at least 1 m. Install pillars in it according to the level and pour concrete. It is worth noting that the shortest period of time for hardening and obtaining the required strength of concrete is approximately 1 week. So, the bearing pillars must be taken care of in advance.

For the preparation of concrete, a mixture of cement, crushed stone of fine fraction and sand is used.

To make a cement mortar, you will need:

  • sand - 2 buckets;
  • crushed stone - 3 buckets;
  • cement - 1 bucket;
  • water - 0.7 buckets.

Pour water into the container and add cement. After vigorous mixing, sand is poured out. Crushed stone is added to a thoroughly mixed cement-sand mixture and mixed again.

To install sliding gates, you need a foundation. For its manufacture, you need a metal channel, about 16-20 cm wide, as well as reinforcement with a cross section of 10-14 mm. The reinforcement is cut into pieces 1 m long and welded to the channel shelves.

Then they dig a trench approximately 1.2-1.5 m deep, 40 cm wide, its length is 50% of the opening. The channel is lowered into it with legs down and all this is poured with liquid concrete.

The channel must be installed exactly in level. At the same time, its top should be on the same level with the road. If everything is done correctly, a metal flat platform is obtained, rollers for sliding gates will be mounted to it. The foundation needs to stand for about one week.

Carrier frame manufacturing

While the concrete hardens, there is time to start making the supporting frame.

A grinder with a metal brush cleans the scale from the pipes.

Then the pipes are degreased with gasoline or a solvent, and an anti-corrosion primer is applied with a spray gun or a brush.

For the manufacture of a frame for sliding gates, a profiled pipe with a cross section of 60 * 40 mm or 50 * 50 mm is used. The outer frame is formed from such pipes. Then an internal frame is welded into it, made of a pipe of 20 * 30 mm, 20 * 40 mm or another. Such a device is needed for fastening wood, metal or corrugated board and gives rigidity to the structure.

The pipes are welded with tacks of 2 cm 25-30 cm each. A guide is welded to the frame from below. All elements must be welded in a checkerboard pattern so that the canvas does not unscrew from heating.

First of all, rollers are placed on the channel under the sliding gates, which need to be pushed to the maximum. Then a guide with a canvas is put on them, the sliding gates are leveled and the roller carts are welded to the channel.

The next step is to weld the supporting rollers and install the end roller. Finally, the upper and lower catchers are welded.

When arranging a sliding gate for a dacha or a gate, one must remember about the functional load and that they look aesthetically pleasing, combined with the general decor of the dacha. Modern building technologies make it possible to make gates of a wide variety of shapes and designs at the dacha.
