Which skirting board for the floor is better. How to choose the right floor plinth. Plastic floor plinth: dimensions, shape and color scheme

Not everyone knows which skirting boards are best used for the floor, but they are the main element in completing the repair.

A little about skirting boards

Many do not know that skirting boards are the final stage of repair and make the room look finished and aesthetic. It helps hide imperfections in the corners between the floor and the wall and makes your room look very inviting. They also produce skirting boards in which you can hide wires and wiring. Skirting boards come in different qualities and shapes, various colors, as well as lengths and widths, it all depends on your design and the room where you are doing repairs, whether it is large or small. After all, the choice of plinth and its width depends on this.

Plastic skirting boards

In our time, the plinth made of plastic is the most popular. Since it is moisture resistant, it can withstand any temperature changes, it is not subject to decay. Such skirting boards are produced with an average length of two and a half meters, but they are embossed or not, they have a flexible shape, with the help of which they can tightly press against the wall and hide all the irregularities. Plastic plinth comes in different designs and colors, they are made to imitate wood, natural stone.

Skirting boards are also sold with special cable channels in which you can hide the wires. Most often, such products are used for such floor coverings as linoleum, carpet or laminate. For them, there are special fittings that make it easier to install skirting boards. It is sold in the form of internal and external corners, plugs and connectors. Installation of such a plinth is best done on liquid nails, it is much easier and faster. They are also screwed with self-tapping screws and hidden under the channel cable bar. In this way, in the future, the plinth can be removed and used again.

Such skirting boards are produced both by our manufacturers and foreign ones. The price of such a plinth is not high and reaches a maximum of one hundred and fifty rubles for two and a half meters. And if your floor is covered with laminate, then MDF plinth will look best on it. It is considered environmentally friendly and not high in price. It will also help you hide all the flaws and irregularities on the walls and floor. Such skirting boards are produced in different colors and with imitation of natural wood and stone. It will not be difficult to pick it up under the laminate and it is better to do it right away with the purchase of the coating. They are also installed at a distance of 40 cm on special hooks, on which the plinth is then attached.

Wooden plinth

Such skirting boards are the most natural and are made from natural tree species. Plinth made of wood is environmentally friendly, it is strong and durable. However, the disadvantage of such a skirting board is its intolerance to temperature differences and that it is not moisture resistant. Such plinths are made from different types of trees. Most often, its top coat is a varnish, but sometimes without it. These skirting boards are best suited for flooring such as parquet or laminate of the best quality.

It is best to order it together with a floor covering. So you will definitely guess with the color and not miss. The installation of such a skirting board is done using liquid nails or carnations with a very small cap. Its price is high and reaches four hundred rubles for one product. Its shape also varies, as does the width of the plinth itself. It is better to choose so, the higher your walls, the wider the baseboard can be. In bathrooms, it is better not to use it, as it will lose its shape and deform. But in general, this is a matter of taste, which skirting board you choose depends only on you.

If you started a renovation and are approaching its final phase - finishing the floor, then most likely you are faced with the problem of choosing not only the floor covering, but also the baseboard. And he, as you know, plays an important role in creating a single and harmonious picture in the room. So, a plinth for a floor hides the joints of wall and floor coverings, visually expands or increases the space in height. And all this can be achieved by simply choosing the right shade of panels in relation to the primary colors in the room.

About how to choose a plinth, what color and size to buy panels, what combination would be better, and what is the price of the material, we understand this material.

Types of skirting boards

All decorative panels for flooring can be divided into three types according to the type of material used in the production:

  1. Wooden skirting boards;
  2. plastic panels;
  3. Aluminum slats.
  • Solid wood plinth, as well as veneered strips and MDF panels are gradually fading into the background. Since the tree, although it has a noble appearance, is an environmentally friendly material, it is still combined only with parquet or parquet board. It's not hard to choose here. In addition, the price of wooden finishing strips is quite high (from $ 2 per linear meter, depending on the type of wood and the country of origin).
  • In second place in popularity is pvc plinth. These slats are distinguished by a variety of sizes, shades, designs and models (it is not difficult to choose). The dimensions of the plastic strips in width vary from 14 to 40 mm, that is, they can be located close to or further from the wall along their lower point. In height, the dimensions of plastic strips reach from 40 to 150 mm. In this case, the length dimensions, as a rule, do not change and amount to 250 mm. The main advantages of PVC panels include their anti-static, ease of installation and maintenance, the ability to hide wires and cables in the room, as well as the ability to choose the shade of the strips relative to doors, windows, the shade of walls or flooring. In addition, the price of PVC panels is affordable and starts from $1 per linear meter.
  • Aluminum skirting board- a fairly light construction, designed for edging carpet, floor tiles or linoleum. The aluminum profile is thin (about 16 mm slats). At the same time, the height of the plinth reaches 60 or 80 mm. A distinctive feature of such panels is the ease of their installation on liquid nails or double-sided mounting tape, as well as the ability to select and bend skirting boards without subsequent arbitrary change in the geometry of the planks. That is, the aluminum plinth behaves perfectly when finishing rounded walls. The price of such a profile starts from $ 3.5 per linear meter and depends on the manufacturer. Prifilpast is considered the most popular on the Russian market.

How to choose the right skirting board

If you wondered "what color to buy a plinth", then this material will be of interest to you. The fact is that today the habit of sticking to a combination of colors for flooring and plinth fades into the background. The combination of finishing panels with window frames, door frames or walls dominates more and more. Let's consider in detail all the options.

  • So, if you have already chosen interior doors and you really liked their color, and the color scheme in the room is somewhat out of the picture, then you can save yourself with a plinth. That will be even better. By purchasing decorative strips of the same color as the doors, you can quite easily integrate the doors you like into the overall interior. A vivid example of this is the blue wallpaper on the walls and red interior doors. Here, the color of the plinth will smoothly meet at the door with the cashier and create a harmonious contrast. Another example of such an implementation of a white skirting board and door against a background of dark wallpaper or paint on the wall in combination with dark parquet or laminate. You can't imagine better.

Phto:

  • If you choose PVC panels, then, as a rule, manufacturers offer to combine it in color and texture with a laminate on the floor. This solution looks good in a large spacious room. If the room is small, then at least give preference to light shades of coating and planks. So you can visually expand the room and make it taller.
  • If desired, you can paint both the walls and the baseboard in the same color. Here, planks made of solid wood for painting are suitable. This solution is original and fits perfectly into such interiors as modern, classic or high-tech. In addition, here you can play on the contrast. In this case, the color of the skirting board should be one tone darker than the shade of the walls. At the same time, it is excellent and even better if the ceiling cornices are the same color as the baseboard. Specialized stores will help you choose the paint.

Important: it is better to choose paint from the same series, but in accordance with the palette provided by the manufacturer. You need to choose once, but for sure.

Photo of skirting boards and walls of the same shade:

  • If the soul wants something unusual, then use the contrast. Here you can very well combine the shade of window frames and baseboards. At the same time, the color of the doors or the cashier should be neutral, and the curtains should not hide the shade of the window frames. Ideally, it is better to match the color and shade of the doors. That is, both windows and panels should be conspicuous with a line of the same shade.
  • If the room has carved stucco, it will be better if the color of the plinth and stucco are identical. Thus, sharp boundaries are erased, and all protruding decorative elements are not striking.

Carved panels and skirting boards Photo:

  • When half-wall panels are used as wall material, skirting boards of the same shade can be used as an addition. Thus, a single panel structure can be created, which gives the room solidity. For greater "persuasiveness" of that de color, cornices can also be mounted. Interesting and original. And most importantly - the geometry of the room is clearly outlined.

Photo of the original panel solution:

  • If there is a lot of metal in the design of the room, you can use an aluminum plinth. The cold shade of the panels will give the room a kind of prostration. Fortunately, the types of aluminum skirting boards allow you to choose to create a bright design.

The floor plinth is, at first glance, a real trifle, the choice of which few people pay due attention to. However, the perception of the interior depends on this detail, because impressions are created from the little things. In order not to act intuitively, let's figure out how to choose a skirting board for the floor so that it is as accurate as possible. matched the room in width, color, type of material, shape and style. Professionals in interior design pay a lot of attention to skirting boards, perceiving them not only as a functional detail that closes the gap between the floor and the wall, but also as such an important element of space as. It's time to reveal the secrets of choosing the right floor plinth, which designers use.

No. 1. How to choose the color of the skirting board?

First, we pay attention not to the shape or material of the skirting board, but to its color, so this parameter is always given the highest value. There is Several approaches to choosing the color of the plinth:

  • according to the color of the flooring- the classic and most common method that allows the skirting board to merge with the floor. The probability of spoiling the interior is minimized, so the method is recommended to all those who are afraid of bold contrasting solutions. It is allowed to use a skirting board one or two shades lighter or darker. This option is great when the room is used, or;
  • the color of the walls. This option is only possible if either in one color. It is advisable to choose a plinth already when the coating is applied and dried, otherwise you can not guess with a shade;
  • under , but in this case the height of the plinth should be the same as the width. Often this method is used when it is necessary to organically fit into the interior a door that does not match the color of the walls or floor. To make it really good, you can make the color, doors and plinth the same;
  • contrasting shade, which does not repeat the color of the flooring, nor the color of the walls, nor the color of the doors. To correctly combine, at first glance, incompatible shades, you must have a subtle sense of taste. Can be taken white skirting boards which have been in high demand lately. Whatever it was, it’s better anyway to create a project for the future interior in a special program in advance and try different shades. There are programs that are very easy to use.

No. 2. What can the floor plinth be made of?

The second most relevant and important when choosing a floor plinth is the question of the material of its manufacture. In this case, it is best to build on the flooring material:

No. 3. Wooden plinth: pros and cons

Despite the emergence of many new materials that captivate with their high performance, wood remains at the top of popularity. In addition, it is difficult to imagine that a wooden floor was decorated with a plinth made of non-natural material. Appreciate a tree at the expense of it numerous advantages:

  • durability;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • strength;
  • excellent appearance;
  • ease of installation.

disadvantages:

Mounting wooden plinth is usually carried out on flat heads, sometimes screws with dowels are used. The tree is easily cut at any angle, easily attached to the base and removed, and can be repaired. It is important that the wall be, otherwise the wood will quickly deform, and there will be no need to talk about any aesthetic appearance. It is also not recommended to use liquid nails for installation: in the event of a change in humidity in the wood, internal stress can be created, which will tear off both the plinth and part of the wall covering from the wall.

Wooden plinth choose from the same breed, from which the floor finish is made, and it is desirable to choose the plinth at the same time as the choice of finishing material. As for wood species, then pine is the cheapest, oak and linden are more expensive, ash, alder, teak, cherry, walnut, birch are used less often. Fans of exotic and non-standard solutions can turn their attention to merbau or dusia wood. If the skirting board is suspiciously cheap, pay attention to its quality: some manufacturers offer products glued from three longitudinal layers of wood.

The cross section of a wooden plinth can be different, like the shape and width. Today it is even possible to manufacture skirting boards to order, if it is necessary that they accurately repeat the curves and other difficult places in the room, but this is an expensive pleasure.

If you plan to open the baseboard with varnish or wax, remember that the wood can change its shade. To roughly understand what the result will be, you can wet a part of the surface of the raw baseboard with a sponge.

No. 4. Veneered plinth

The veneered skirting board has a similar structure. It only the top layer is made of precious wood(walnut, oak, bamboo, pear, etc.), and the base is made of pine or spruce wood. The advantages and disadvantages are the same as those of a pure wooden skirting board, but slightly lower price. The shade and relief of the surface can be anything. By the way, today veneered and wooden skirting boards are equipped for laying.

No. 5. MDF plinth

Plinth made of MDF is golden mean in terms of price and quality. In terms of properties, the material is almost as good as wood, and in some respects even ahead of it, and at the same time it costs much less. are made from sawdust, which are pressed under high temperature and pressure together with urea resins. It turns out a durable and non-hazardous material that does not emit harmful substances into the air. On top, the board can be painted, laminated or veneered with a thin layer of natural wood, so the appearance is very diverse.

Advantages:

Disadvantages:

  • strength and mechanical resistance is much lower than that of wood, but higher than that of plastic.

Experts say that MDF plinth can be attached to liquid nails, but it is better to use special clamps that are screwed to the wall. Due to this fastening, the plinth can be removed and reused. The slight flexibility of the material allows it to be attached to slightly curved walls.

Sometimes found on store shelves LDF plinth. The LDF board is made using the same technology as MDF, but has a lower density: 450-650 kg / cm 3 for LDF versus 650-850 kg / cm 3 for MDF.

No. 6. Rigid plastic skirting board

More than half of all those who start to think about which skirting board to choose end up with the plastic version. There are much more such products on the shelves of stores than wooden or veneered ones, because plastic plinth looks very good and is cheap. Such plinths are made from foamed polyvinyl chloride, the product can have any color and relief, so it will not be difficult to choose the right option, but these are not the only advantages of PVC plinth.

Advantages:

  • low price;
  • resistance to moisture and rotting, so this skirting board can be used in the bathroom and in the kitchen, as well as safely washed without fear of consequences;
  • resistance to ultraviolet rays and temperature extremes;
  • the presence of cavities inside the plinth, allowing you to hide a lot of cables.

disadvantages:

Plastic plinth consists of mounting and front part. It is the fastening part that is mounted to the wall with self-tapping screws, so the front side remains smooth. Between the mounting and the front part, a sufficient space is formed in which it can be placed, and sometimes there is only enough space for a television cable, and sometimes you can lay a bundle of wires, and also divided by partitions for convenience. At the ends and in the corners, special plugs are used; when choosing, pay utmost attention to them, since they often differ greatly in color from the baseboard itself.

For carpet flooring there is a special plastic baseboard that looks like an L-shaped bar into which you need to insert the tape cut off from it. As a result, it is possible to completely disguise the plinth.

No. 7. Flexible plinth

If there are a lot of curvilinear and non-standard shapes in the room, then there is no better option than a flexible plastic plinth. In order for the material to acquire unique properties, the spatial structure of the polymer threads is slightly modified during production, but to preserve such properties, the plinth must be stored in a special package. Often a flexible plinth is produced in the form of a long tape, which allows installation with virtually no seams.

Advantages:

  • plasticity and the ability to take the necessary shape;
  • moisture resistance and ease of care;
  • resistance to temperature changes.

disadvantages:

  • relatively high cost;
  • installation complexity.

Installation consists in installing a carrier profile, on top of which a flexible front profile is attached. It is preheated in warm water or hot air until it becomes plastic. After that, it can be fixed into fastener segments and wait until it hardens itself, taking the desired shape.

No. 8. Ceramic plinth

A couple of decades ago, when decorating a finished room, plinths were made by hand, cutting the same tile into pieces. It was not always possible to get a smooth edge, therefore the appearance of such a plinth was not particularly aesthetic. Today, ceramic plinth often comes with tiles, has exactly the same color as the base material, and differs only in size, and its width is made such that the seams can be joined. Of course, you can choose a skirting board of a completely different color and a different batch. Between the wall and often use a curved plinth.

No. 9. metal plinth

For the manufacture of plinth can be used aluminium, stainless steel and brass, more often, of course, anodized aluminum is found.

Main advantages:

  • high strength and durability;
  • beautiful appearance;
  • resistance to mechanical damage, changes in humidity and temperature;
  • wear resistance;
  • the presence of a cavity for laying cables.

From shortcomings it can be noted the high cost and compatibility is far from being with all materials. Aluminum plinth will look good with tiles, porcelain tile, self-leveling flooring and commercial linoleum. Most often, the material is used in public areas, but is also suitable for kitchens and bathrooms, it will become an addition. or

No. 12. Plinth and interior style

To choose the right skirting board, you must also consider:

The floor plinth is installed already at the end of the finishing work, after the installation of floor and wall coverings. Nevertheless, even before the repair begins, it is necessary to at least in general terms imagine what color, shape and size the plinth will be - it is better to choose the final version after all the finishing has been done, and the final shades of the floor and walls will be visible.

Undoubtedly, you are changing gender. And then the question arises: which plinth to choose? After all, for each specific coating there is its own, more suitable type. In order not to make mistakes, certain knowledge is needed. Without a doubt, you can call a specialist who will not only advise, but also install. But this pleasure is not cheap. And why spend extra money if this information can be found on the Internet. We will be happy to help you make the right choice. The plinth mainly performs a decorative function, although now there are those that perfectly hide all communications. It perfectly covers the joints, the edges of the floor and wallpaper and, in general, creates a look of completeness. Today, so many different skirting boards are produced that, in fact, it can be difficult to decide not only in color, but also in texture. That is why we provide you with complete information so that when you come to the store, you know exactly what you need. Moreover, it is problematic to find responsible sellers now, basically they shove the buyer the product that is most profitable for them to sell. So, how to choose a plinth by texture.

Wood plinth

The plinth wooden differs from all others in the environmental friendliness and naturalness. It is quite durable, strong and beautiful. Models are available with and without lacquer. If you run a damp sponge over an unpolished base, you will immediately see what color the wood will acquire when painted. Basically, it's convenient.

Since a wooden plinth is used for parquet and plank floors, when ordering a floor surface, you can also order a plinth - it will be perfectly matched in color. If you use it for another textured floor, then you have the opportunity to decorate it yourself: cover it with the desired color of varnish, paint or stain. By the way, this is almost the only species that can be restored.

A wooden plinth is installed exclusively to flat surfaces with self-tapping screws, fasteners, nails without caps or liquid nails. The installation is, frankly, difficult.

In addition to all the advantages, this type has a lot of disadvantages. Firstly, it is expensive, secondly, grinding and painting are needed, and thirdly, because of their rigidity, it is problematic to attach them tightly. Also, the tree does not tolerate high temperatures, humid air and other influences.

Plastic plinth

How to choose a floor plinth to get both cheap and more or less high quality? If you are asking this question, then plastic material is perfect for you. Because it is not bad in its characteristics: it does not let water through, it is not afraid of temperature changes, it is not subject to rotting and deformation. It is plastic and has the widest range of colors, does not fade or lose color, is very easy to care for and. Its hollow interior allows you to hide a huge number of communication wires, and a collapsible design makes it possible, if necessary, to reinstall it.

Plastic products consist of a panel that performs decorative functions and an element that has a channel for cables. In principle, plastic is the most popular type, which can be with a flexible edge, embossed or straight. The length of such a plinth can reach two and a half meters, the design is varied, and the designs are collapsible, one-piece, with plugs, with connecting corners, and so on.

Plastic is fastened simply, quickly and easily. Self-tapping screws, glue and liquid nails are used. Naturally, like any other type, it has its drawbacks:

  • Cracks easily.
  • Fear of frost.
  • Not repairable.
  • artificial material.
  • Meltable on contact with fire.

MDF

Do you know how to choose a skirting board so that it is made from natural raw materials and is inexpensive? There is only one answer - this is MDF. It is produced, unlike wood, from wood fibers, which are compressed at elevated temperatures, the front side is covered with dyed paper and melamine coating. But nevertheless, it is environmentally friendly, moisture resistant and has, like plastic, cavities for communications.

The range of colors is very large and the design is varied. Such a product can be tightly installed to any uneven surface. Installation work is easy: clamps are fixed to the wall, and the finish is hung on them. Disadvantages: breaks easily and cannot be restored.

Laminated and veneered

Laminate plinth is only suitable for one type of floor - laminate. It is a little more natural than plastic, and it does not require plugs. Has boundless relief, flexible system and emptiness inside. Therefore, wires can be installed. In everyday care - simple and unpretentious. A huge disadvantage of this species is that it has a very poor assortment and a rather high price, as well as too low a height.

The veneered product is made from wood veneer, which has the widest range. Moisture resistance is moderate, the fastening system is liquid nails or clips, and the coating is varnished. During installation, corners and plugs are not needed. Its price, in principle, is not cheap, but less than an expensive tree. It is very bad that after a while the main color changes and you can find sapwood or knots in finished form.

Aluminum and steel products

In order to know how to choose the right skirting board for porcelain stoneware, linoleum, carpet and other commercial coatings, you need to carefully study the metal types. For example, aluminum is perfect for all this and looks great, has resistance to mechanical damage and strength.

Steel has durability, frost resistance and high quality. Inside there is a hollow space, easy to mount and does not lose external performance. Fits perfectly into any interior.

Plinth polyurethane, flexible and ceramic

Polyurethane products are used absolutely in any premises, as they are able to withstand the most humid places and hot rooms. They are considered versatile and durable.

Flexible ones are used in the most diverse and complex structures. Due to their flexibility, they are widely used. Produced from some types of wood with subsequent processing. The flexible skirting board is easy to install, after which it takes on a solid state, which leads to strength.

Ceramics is combined only with tiled flooring or in the bathroom. It has solid and chic external data. Installed with tile adhesive. The main disadvantage is the impossibility of replacement, since it is very difficult to find a suitable option (it is better to stock up in advance).

Replacing the flooring - which skirting board to choose?

Flooring - laminate

Probably, everyone is wondering which skirting board to choose for the laminate, because this material is very sophisticated and whimsical. But he is also different. For the one that is cheaper in price, a plastic plinth is perfect, in its arsenal there is a large selection of colors. It will make it possible to avoid uneven surfaces.

If you opt for laminated skirting boards, you can't go wrong. They are in harmony with any kind of laminate. Of course, MDF and any other type of wood would be a great solution.

It is worth considering that in no case can a plinth be attached to a floor covering of this type. This must be done against the wall.

Linoleum and parquet

For linoleum flooring, MDF, plastic, aluminum and veneer finishes can be used. Other species are not very compatible with such material.

The parquet floor always looks solid, so the finishing strips should match this. Most of all, parquet is impressed by all kinds of wood. Many people prefer to install plastic trim, but experts do not recommend doing this, because the interior connection is lost. It can only be used if there is a sufficient amount of plastic material in the overall design of the room.

Carpet, organite, cork and bulk

Carpet is a carpet that requires a certain type of skirting board to be applied to it. It is necessary that its design be disassembled, because the carpet needs to be cleaned periodically. It is also necessary to give preference to the finish on adhesive tape. MDF, plastic and veneer will go well with carpet.

A laminated rail, plastic, flexible and polyurethane is best suited to the organic and self-leveling floor. Cork flooring goes well with wood.

Marble, porcelain stoneware and ceramic tiles

In principle, these types of coatings can do without a skirting board, but sometimes it is necessary to create a certain interior and hide communications. There are few options here: ceramic, aluminum and from the same material from which the floor is made.

Laminated finishes can also be applied to ceramics. Wood, metal and plastic are not suitable categorically.

Finishing touches

If you are already, take the appropriate measurements. Since you can choose a skirting board in any store, make sure that the seller gives you a complete set.

Video on how to choose a skirting board:

When choosing a color, focus not on the general color palette, but solely on the tone of the floor. The wall, doors, etc., do not matter in the slightest. The finish can be one tone darker or lighter than the flooring. And remember, the interior of your apartment depends on your decision.

Let me share, my friends, with you my experience and knowledge regarding the repair of an apartment, more precisely, on the part that runs along the ceiling and along the floor. Guessed? Did you guess right?

Correctly! Regarding floor and ceiling skirting boards. How am I so knowledgeable? Quite recently I faced such a problem. We did the repair, but on the baseboards I decided to try my hand myself. It’s not for nothing that I have an upper, ugh, that is, I have a higher education (albeit a humanitarian one, which is why I decided to compose this opus).

So, let's start in order.

Do you need a plinth at all?

Although I am a philologist by education, I am a builder by vocation. Therefore, I have done a lot of apartment repairs and I know which skirting boards are best for the floor. And I don’t look like a fool in a hardware store, no unscrupulous consultant will sell me garbage.

At first, to be honest, I had a sin not to fix these things at all. And what, and so good, beautiful and cute.

However, I know firsthand that this seemingly invisible detail against the background of the rest of the magnificence of my repair has many purposes:

  • gives the floor and ceiling a finished look;
  • covers the joints between the floor and walls;
  • a paradise of wallpaper and flooring will help to hide (I cut them a little unevenly there);
  • Well, the wires, of course, if necessary, will disguise (otherwise I'm going to hang the plasma in the toilet, I'll have to stretch the Internet and cable there over time).

What are they made from?

Based on my own experience, I want to tell you that there are a great many options for floor and ceiling skirting boards. So that you don’t fill your bright little head with trifles and don’t waste time, I decided to tell you about all the varieties and tell you about the pros and cons.

The most commonly used products are:

  • wooden;
  • plastic;
  • from MDF;

The wooden plinth, despite the fact that it was known to our great-grandfathers, has not lost its attractiveness. Although now there are more and more new materials and the tree is gradually fading into the background.

Plinth made of wood will look great on expensive flooring made from natural materials. The greatest effect can be achieved if the floor and baseboard are made from the same wood.

As for other advantages and disadvantages, then, as a true philologist and noble builder, I have reduced them to an interesting table, which I bring to your attention.

MFD skirting boards are made from wood fibers by hot pressing. On the front side, paper is applied, previously impregnated with dyes and protective compounds. Therefore, in appearance they resemble wooden ones, but differ in a variety of colors and shapes.

By the pros and cons, as you probably guessed, I suggest you read the tablet. No wonder I taught for three hours how to draw it in a text editor. It was easier to draw with a pencil, I, as a builder, more familiar.

The most popular today is a plastic plinth. Now you will understand why:

In addition, the plastic plinth has several varieties.

  1. Under the carpet. Such a plinth is a bar (L-shaped). You can insert a tape into it, which is cut off from the carpet and it turns out that the skirting board is made of the same material as the carpet.
  2. Flexible plinth. It appeared on sale not so long ago and is used for floors and walls of a curvilinear shape. He has a super - the ability to bend around and decorative elements of decor.

It is made of plastic, the structure of which is changed at the molecular level. That's what technology has come to! Store it in special packaging in order to preserve the properties of the material.

The advantages of such a plinth are:

  • resistance to moisture;
  • takes any desired form.

Among the shortcomings again:

  • the price is not low;
  • requires certain skills during installation.

Such a plinth is ideal for houses and rooms of a round shape (well, you know, some people build such that the mother-in-law does not find a corner in it).

And what are they?

Width

My monumental scientific work did not end there. Knowledge just leaks out. Therefore, I will tell you that skirting boards can be of different widths, from one centimeter, or even less, to twenty. So you also have to decide how to choose the width.

Here, knowledgeable people are advised to pay attention to such points:

  1. A wide baseboard can easily smooth corners. The room will look more rounded, soothing, peaceful.
    Popular wisdom says that if a person is in an apartment with sharp corners, then he becomes aggressive, nervous. And rounded corners soothe and relax. This was invented by manufacturers of wide skirting boards.
  2. The width of the plinth can hide irregularities and defects in the joints of the ceiling with walls, both conventional and suspended. This is for the inept, who cannot cut the wallpaper evenly along the floor and ceilings.
  3. Again, human vision determines the size of a room by two horizontal surfaces - the ceiling and the floor. Therefore, the wider the baseboard, the smaller the room seems. If you are a happy owner of Khrushchev, it is better to leave wide plinths in the store.
  4. The height of the room also affects the choice of skirting board width. If the ceiling is high, you can use a wide plinth, if vice versa, then it’s better not to, it will look bulky and awkward.

Colour

Do you think that's all? No matter how. Forgot to decide on a color. Here, too, you can’t just buy the first squiggle that comes across.

The following factors must be taken into account:

  1. White visually makes the room a little higher than it really is - checked.
  2. The plinth of the color of the walls, plus, if at the same time it is also wide, on the contrary, will reduce the room.
  3. If more than three colors are present in one room, then it will look colorful.
  4. If you choose a baseboard in a bright color, such as dark oak, in a room with light walls, it can look spectacular, but it must be complemented by appropriate accessories and decor elements.

The form

And finally, it remains to choose a form. And then I thought about whether to give preference to pretentiousness and a complex pattern or not to show off and stop at the form of simple lines.

Decided to choose the second option. Pretentious, complex forms will suit the pompous interior in the style of antiquity in combination with natural expensive materials. In addition, the more complex the shape, the more difficult these elements are in fitting corners.

Well, simple forms are just right for me, a simple person. They are more versatile. Suitable for almost any finish, without attracting much attention. And let the geometry teachers set themselves complex forms.

But how to choose it correctly?

Phew, well, finally figured out the variety of products. Now I dare to give you, my grateful readers, a few tips on how to choose the right skirting board.

It is clear that if you have already chosen a solid wooden or parquet flooring, then the skirting boards must be selected accordingly. Plastic ones, I’m telling you for sure, they will look like they asked a neighbor to use them. But with laminate or linoleum - that's it. Skirting boards from MDF, by the way, will also look good.

Well, in choosing a color, I advise you, in general, not to bother, but take it directly to the color of the floor. The discrepancy is, of course, allowed, but you definitely do not overdo it.

Now many mods use this solution - the plinth is made to match the wall.
It looks unusual and fresh, I tell you.
In general, my friends, what is the best floor plinth, to judge you, I’ll tell you one thing: even a specialist philologist can pick up a plinth for the interior of his “nest”.

Oh, I also remembered such a cool idea: if you have a ceiling plinth, you can choose a floor plinth to match its tone. Oh, now you also have to tell you about the ceiling plinths.

And also on the ceiling?

No one wants the floor in our apartment to be beautifully and aesthetically decorated, and the ceiling looked random. Therefore, you will have to buy it more and up. And first find out which is better ceiling plinth.

As in the previous case, we will choose the shape, material and color of the plinth.

There are several common options:

  1. Styrofoam. If you want to get a great skirting board for the ceiling at a minimal cost, then pay attention to the foam skirting board. It is very easily processed with an ordinary kitchen knife, and costs mere pennies.

The disadvantages of the material include:

  • flammability
  • low mechanical strength.

If you are going to use this skirting board for other purposes, for example, as a curb, then I tell you right away, it’s better to leave this idea and give preference to more durable materials. Well, if the foam plinth is used under the ceiling, it is unlikely that someone will be able to spoil it there. If only on purpose.

  1. Styrofoam. The brother of Styrofoam, who was ahead of his closest relative in development.

A plinth made of expanded polystyrene, unlike polystyrene foam, has several advantages:

  • It is much stronger than foam, although it can also be dealt with with a knife. But crushing or accidentally breaking the part will not work. Therefore, it can also be used as a border.
  • Expanded polystyrene does not support combustion, during a fire it does not emit chemicals harmful to humans.
  • Expanded polystyrene is more expensive than polystyrene. However, the purchase of such a plinth will not ruin even the most zealous owner.
  1. Wood. In no case should we forget about wooden baguettes. Do you want pomposity and aristocracy in the interior? Then this material is right for you. Skirting boards made of expensive woods look especially beautiful: red, oak, ash.

The price, of course, immediately makes it clear that it is not cheap. In addition, such skirting boards are much more difficult to process than, for example, products made of polystyrene foam. You will have to use a hacksaw with frequent small teeth when fitting corners, and finish the joints with a file.

And if it is not difficult to putty gaps in other skirting boards, then with a tree, especially an expensive one, you will have to try pretty hard, since any error will immediately catch your eye.

Among the shortcomings of such beautiful, expensive skirting boards, it is worth noting the following:

  • susceptibility to decay;
  • danger of deformation when wet.

Wooden skirting boards require serious post-processing after installation. Therefore, it is better not to do this operation with your own hands, but to entrust it to professionals like me. They have instructions for work, thanks to which the entire technological process will be carried out exactly.

How to attach it?

The installation of the floor plinth is quite simple, so I will pay more attention to what kind of glue is better to glue the ceiling plinth. There is nothing difficult in choosing the material for fixing this part. Any universal glue or putty will do. And since the products themselves are light as a feather, additional fixation for foam and polystyrene skirting boards is not required.

Here you will have to puff with wooden skirting boards: they require work with a puncher and pre-installed fasteners to which a wooden baguette is attached.

Conclusion

Briefly about all the nuances of choosing skirting boards, I told you. If I continue to write, then, firstly, my fingers will fall off, and secondly, the work will pull me to my dissertation, and thirdly, there is already an order for apartment renovation, I will go to earn money.

For those who dislike reading, I offer a video in this article, where the nuances of choosing skirting boards are covered in no less detail. There you will also find out what is better to glue the ceiling plinth on if you forgot to buy “liquid nails”.
