  • cast iron panel for 2 burners 71 x 41 cm;
  • sheets of basalt cardboard and roofing felt;
  • periodic profile reinforcement Ø 12-16 mm in the base.

Note. The quantity of bricks is indicated taking into account the construction of the chimney pipe and the cap.

Sectional diagrams of the furnace

For fireclay masonry, you should purchase special refractory clay or mortar. The body of the furnace is laid out on a clay-sand mortar with the addition of M400 cement. Crushed stone, sand and Portland cement will be used to construct the foundation. How much building materials are needed depends on the stability of the soil and the depth of its foundation.

Laying a reinforced concrete foundation

Since the weight of the structure exceeds 1 ton, it cannot be built on the ground or cement screed. A reliable foundation is required, spaced 5-10 cm from the base of the veranda. A foundation pit is dug for construction, the depth of which depends on the occurrence of dense soil horizons. As a rule, it does not exceed 1 m.

Reference. In soils subject to frost heaving forces, it is necessary to build a pile-screw foundation connected by metal beams or a concrete grillage.

The step-by-step foundation laying technology looks like this:

  1. Mark and dig a hole 1760 x 1120 mm, compact the bottom with a vibrating plate or manually. Place a cushion of sand 0.1 m thick and repeat compaction.
  2. Fill the pit to ground level with rubble - fragments of stones, bricks and other solid construction waste, excluding wood. Fill the voids with clay and water slurry and let it harden.
  3. Make a reinforcing mesh by tying the rods at intervals of 10-15 cm. Install it on top of the backfill, lifting it by 3-5 cm using stands so that the rods are in the thickness of the concrete.
  4. Make homemade formwork from boards 20 cm high.

The last stage of pouring is preparing concrete grade 150 and placing the mixture in the formwork. The proportions of bulk materials are 3 parts sand + 5 parts crushed stone per 1 measure of Portland cement M400. Place the upper plane of the monolith horizontally and leave it to harden for 4 weeks. It is recommended to remove the formwork after 7-10 days.

It is advisable to place a layer of roofing material under the reinforced concrete slab for the purpose of waterproofing, as shown in the diagram. Then the monolith will not be saturated with moisture from the soil. More information about laying furnace foundations is described in the video:

Preparing for construction

To begin, cover the hardened concrete slab with 2 layers of roofing felt to ensure waterproofing of the brick structure. Assemble the standard set of stove-maker tools shown in the photo: trowels, brushes, measuring devices, and so on.

You can make the mortar for a backyard barbecue oven yourself or buy a ready-made building mixture. In the first case, proceed in this order:

  1. Soak the clay, as free from soil as possible, in a trough with water for 1-2 days.
  2. Pass the clay solution through a sieve, separating the pebbles and kneading the lumps.
  3. Sift the sand and mix with liquid clay in a ratio of approximately 1:1.
  4. Before laying, add cement in the amount of 200-300 grams per bucket.

The finished solution should not stick too much to the trowel, and when squeezed by hand, give a minimum of cracks. To achieve better properties, experiment with the proportions of sand and clay.

Note. Mortar for fastening refractory bricks is prepared according to the instructions on the packaging (bag).

Preparatory work

Foundation for a brick barbecue

For a barbecue in the country, given that it is made of brick, the most rational solution would be a slab base. Firstly, strength and stability of the structure are ensured. Secondly, you won’t have to carry out extensive excavation work, which is extremely undesirable for a habitable summer cottage.

To begin, mark out the area prepared for the foundation. To do this, you can use twine and pegs (its size should correspond to the area of ​​the barbecue in the drawing).

Then you need to dig a hole in the designated place (a depth of 30 cm will be sufficient). In the resulting pit you need to install formwork. The bonding solution will be placed in it. This mixture is prepared from sand and cement in a ratio of 3 to 1.

The base of a brick barbecue must be reinforced. For such purposes, both reinforcing bars and reinforcing mesh are used. The rods must be placed in the base after filling half of the prepared volume of the foundation.

In the case of a mesh, it will have to be laid twice. The lower part of the foundation needs to be filled with approximately one third of the solution, lay a mesh on top of it, fill another third and lay the next reinforcing layer. Then simply fill the foundation to the required height.

Laying a brick grill

To make brick walls look neat and smooth, it is recommended to first lay the first row of material without mortar. On the foundation, you can mark guidelines for the location of all subsequent rows in the masonry.

The brick grill should be laid out in a checkerboard pattern, i.e. the next row will always be shifted by half a brick block in relation to the previous one.

Before laying bricks, you must ensure that the foundation is sufficiently hardened. To be sure, it is better to wait a few days before starting work.

Masonry mortar

For laying the barbecue, two types of mortar are used:

Standard mortar for areas not in direct contact with fire. Depending on the brand of cement, the amount of sand is calculated:

  • for M25, a proportion of 5 parts sand to 1 part cement is used;
  • for M50 – 4 to 1;
  • for M75 – 3 to 1.

Fireclay clay is used for laying the firebox itself. This fireproof material can withstand high temperatures. In building materials stores it can be found under the name “kaolin”.

Laying process

The procedure for laying bricks directly depends on the order of your chosen design/drawing of the barbecue, which must be strictly adhered to, so below we will indicate only general rules and tips:

  • Carefully lay the bricks of the initial row.
  • You need to start laying out the row from the corner, and only then fill the side walls.
  • The width of the spaces between the bricks is 1 cm.
  • Maintain the correct angles and level of masonry.
  • The solution for the first row should be thick.
  • The bricks of the next row necessarily overlap the seams of the previous row.
  • When laying out subsequent rows, do not forget to check the corners of the masonry for verticality.
  • Every third seam must be reinforced with mesh or steel rods.

Roasting rack

For the base under the roasting pan, it is necessary to place metal corners or reinforcing bars between the opposite walls.

The base of the firebox made of bricks is laid on them. For us, this role is played by a metal pallet. The main condition is that the firebox is easily cleaned of ash.

In the area of ​​the firebox, it is necessary to leave side gaps in the brickwork unfilled with mortar. This will ensure air enters the chamber. After all, without an influx of oxygen, the combustion process of fuel is impossible.

The base for the brazier is placed in the space between the walls of the structure. To do this, metal rods or corners can be placed between them, on which the brick base will be laid. As an alternative, you can use a tray made of thick metal sheet.

Chimney for barbecue

The simplest option is to install a metal box shaped like a cone, tapering upward.

Making a brick chimney is more difficult; practical experience is needed here. It is enough just to note that it is necessary to correctly calculate its height.

But it will be even larger, and the taste of a freshly prepared meat dish will be even more pleasant if you cook it yourself on your own barbecue. Well, let's figure out how to make it ourselves.

Features of building a barbecue on a summer cottage

To become the owner of your own simple brick barbecue, you don’t always need to call on professionals for help. Even intellectual workers can make this simple device with their own hands - the procedure is so simple and labor intensive.

However, before embarking on practical actions, it would be a good idea to indulge in a little reflection. This is how you can imagine the appearance of the future structure, the presence of accompanying elements of equipment, and, of course, the upcoming location of the barbecue.

An important point in such planning is the choice of material. And, based on the practical experience of many owners of such culinary structures, brick is called the best material.

Choosing an area for a barbecue

The location of the future structure should be chosen based on two motives:

  • Conditions for comfortable use
  • Safety requirements for handling open flames

It is advisable to locate a gazebo with a barbecue not too far from the house, since you will have to get water and ingredients from there. At the same time, too close a location risks the fact that sparks from the barbecue can reach highly flammable cladding materials of a residential building.

It is advisable that there are no decorative and garden plantings, as well as outbuildings and structures for animals near the location.

The integrated barbecue area should be spacious to provide a small area for eating and relaxing. When choosing a location, you need to pay attention to the prevailing winds in the area and place the structure in a place where gusts of wind are insignificant.

Choosing a building format

Depending on the dimensions, location conditions and your own preferences, the shape of the main structure of a brick barbecue for a summer house can have several types of configuration:

With engineering precision, it is advisable to think through the placement of a brazier, grates and skewers in a brick barbecue design. To ensure safety, a special tray must be installed under the fryer grates to collect burnt-out fuel residues.

Preparing materials for barbecue

The main building component of this structure is brick.

In the process of laying a brick barbecue with your own hands, you will have to use two types of bricks, one of which is intended for facing masonry, and the second is used to lay out the barbecue frame itself.

So, how to build a brick barbecue with your own hands? For construction you will need two categories of basic material:

  • Fire brick
  • Clinker brick

At the same time, it is necessary to stock up on cement, sand, gravel, clay - these are bulk materials.

Important! Bulk materials will be needed to fill the foundation and prepare working solutions. And you need to remember that the clay mortar will be used for laying the inner surface of the barbecue oven, as well as the chimney. Cement mortar will be used for foundation and facing work with clinker bricks.

Along with this you need to prepare:

  • Board for formwork construction
  • Metal grate for grilling
  • Waterproofing materials
  • Chimney pipe with valve
  • Metal mesh for the foundation

At the same time as the materials, you need to prepare the tools - you only need a few of them.

How to properly lay out a brick grill?

Your working arsenal should include a shovel, a trowel, a bucket for mortar, and, if possible, a mortar mixer and a grinder for cutting facing bricks.

Foundation structure

Like any construction, we build a barbecue from bricks from the foundation.

Foundation type - slab.

A depression of up to 300 mm in size is made on the prepared surface, at the bottom of which sand is placed to construct a cushion. Fine crushed stone is poured over it and a metal mesh is laid. The resulting base layer is filled with concrete mixture.

Until complete drying, which will be completed in 5-6 days, work on the site stops.

Construction of a barbecue

So, the foundation is ready, now let's figure out how to make a brick barbecue with your own hands. The stage begins with the direct construction of a brick barbecue oven. Depending on the configuration and type of construction, various nuances in the furnace design are possible. But, nevertheless, with any type of it, you will have to perform some general elements.

First, waterproofing material is laid at the location. The first stage of construction is laid on it using ordinary bricks. A place is immediately made for storing a small supply of firewood - a woodpile. To make it, you can lay one brick.

Firebox

In the process of constructing these structural elements of a brick corner barbecue, you should remember the plans of the drafted project, which includes the availability of additional funds.

If necessary, ovens, spits and other attributes must be firmly installed during the process of laying the furnace firebox and its wall surfaces. If you have a sink, it is advisable to leave space near the stove pedestal for a drainage system.

BBQ grill

During this stage, a metal grate is placed between the firebox and the collection of burnt-out residues. A sheet of metal with a thickness of at least 5 mm can also be used.

The sheets should be placed approximately on the fifth row of masonry.

To ensure strength, after the fifth row of masonry, metal rods with a cross-section of at least 3-5 mm, or narrow metal plates of similar thickness, are placed on the cement mortar. They should protrude beyond the masonry by 75-80 mm.

After the mortar hardens and the next rows are laid, these protruding elements will serve as support for the slab or grate.

Something to remember! When building a brick barbecue oven with your own hands, you need to stick to small sizes, since a structure that is too high may have weak draft, which will constantly lead to smoke.

After completing the first tier of construction, the shape of the stove begins to narrow, gradually turning into a chimney.

After several rows of the chimney structure, a pipe is installed on top and strengthened with cement mortar.

The outer part of the wall surfaces of the barbecue is laid with clinker bricks, and decorative bricks or tiles can also be used for cladding.

During the stage, the external shapes of the furnace are constructed on the outer masonry in the form of openings of various shapes and arches.

Final work

After finishing the masonry and installing the pipe and additional elements of the barbecue structure, you need to give the structure an aesthetic appearance. To do this, you need to clear the seams between the brick rows from the influx of mortar, make and install seats and a table. If provided for by the project, you need to build a canopy.

Detailed instructions for making a barbecue can be found on the Internet or you can ask a master stove maker. It is important to design the structure correctly. It is necessary that the emanating smoke be directed vertically and not create inconvenience during cooking. To do this, you should follow the rules when forming a combustion chamber, use 3 components:

  • brick niches;
  • metal shelves, steel plates from an old stove;
  • slabs under the base of paving slabs or pouring it in the form of a foundation with formwork and cement.

A brick barbecue is built quickly, look at photos and video examples. The manufacturing process is not complicated; no special tools are required.

A metal grill is definitely good. But, in addition to functionality, you also want beauty, especially on the site: in the country or near the house. A brick barbecue gives an attractive look without reducing functionality. There are very simple models that can be folded, even without skill, in a day or two, there are more complex ones - entire complexes. We don’t recommend building these without experience, but try a simple barbecue oven or just a brick grill. Master masonry and basic techniques, and then you can take on more serious projects.

Barbecue grill - what's the difference?

There is no exact division between grills and barbecues. The main difference is that barbecue is cooked on skewers, while barbecue is cooked on a grill. But both of these cooking methods can be used even over a fire, so - for us, at least - both the grill and the barbecue are one design.

You can also classify by the presence of a roof. A barbecue is always an open device, without a chimney. In barbecues, especially those made of brick, chimneys are often made, although there are also simple open models.

Simple brick grill

This design is very simple and can be easily modified to suit any needs and desires. It consists of brick walls in which projections are arranged (the brick is placed on its edge). Heat-resistant sheets (metal, etc.), grates, and skewers are placed on these protrusions. Convenient, especially if there is some kind of roof over your head in case of precipitation, but it is built separately and at will.

Any brick structure requires a foundation, or at least a prepared foundation. Not even this small brick grill. Since there are not many bricks - the wall is half a brick - a compacted area lined with some kind of hard covering is suitable for this structure.

Preparing the base

Remove the fertile layer and, if necessary, deepen the pit. The depth should be about 20-25 cm. The dimensions of the foundation or platform are 50 cm larger than the dimensions of the stove in all directions. The bottom is leveled, crushed stone of the middle fraction is poured onto it. The thickness of the crushed stone layer is 15 cm. It is compacted well. It is advisable to use a vibrating plate, if not, a metal or wooden tamper.

Further steps depend on the selected base. If this is one of the coverings - paving stones, paving slabs and similar materials, then a layer of fine-grained sand is poured into which the covering is laid level.

If a slab foundation is chosen as the base, it is reinforced with a rod 10 mm in diameter. It is laid along and across the foundation in increments of 20 cm, and tied at the intersection. If you don’t know how to knit with special wire, you can tie it with plastic clamps. Reinforcement with a finished mesh of thick wire is allowed for this model. The formwork is placed around the edges and everything is poured. Work can begin in a week if the average daily temperature was not lower than +20°C, and in two if it was +17°C.

For this brick grill, solid ceramic brick M200 is used. You can use a stove-type one, but it’s more expensive; you shouldn’t use fireclay: it’s not the right temperature and it doesn’t like moisture too much to feel normal in an open grill.

The masonry is laid using a clay-sand mixture, to which a little cement is added for greater strength. For beginners, it is better to take a ready-made mixture for stoves, but not heat-resistant, without fireclay. Knead according to the instructions, seam thickness - 3-5 mm, maintain strictly. Constantly monitor the verticality of the walls and the horizontality of the masonry. This is important for normal operation of the oven.

As you can see, everything is really very simple. Each odd row starts with a whole brick, the odd row starts with a half. In the 6th and 10th rows, the bricks are placed on a spoon - sideways, and turned across the main masonry. If you are making a barbecue - under the grate - in the same rows the back wall is made of bricks, also placed on spoons, and to maintain the thickness of the masonry they are placed in two rows, just like the rest - with bandaging - displacement of the seams. If you are going to use the grill for skewers, place a brick on the back wall, also on a spoon, making a ledge in this area as well. In front, a profile metal pipe of small cross-section, cut to size, is used as a support for the skewers. You can make recesses in it for skewers.

Starting from the 7th row, the laying is carried out only on half - right or left - as is convenient for you, but this layout is given under the frying chamber on the left - it is wider, and there is a table on the left. If it’s more convenient for you the other way around, do a mirror image of this order.

Brick is a hygroscopic material; in order to reduce the amount of moisture that it will “pull” from the base and extend its service life, waterproofing is needed under the first row. You can lay rolled material (such as roofing felt or waterproofing material) in two layers and apply hydrophobic impregnation around the perimeter. A layer of waterproofing between the first and second rows would not hurt either.

After the brick grill is built, it is left to dry in warm weather for 1-2 days, in cooler weather - for 3-5. Then you can do a test run. Approximate “equipment” is shown in the photograph of the finished barbecue. This version has three rows of protrusions: the top one is for food, the middle one is for coals, and the bottom one is for collecting burnt coals and ash.

In order for a folded grill to serve more or less long, it is advisable to coat it with a composition that reduces hygroscopicity. For this case, KO-85 varnish is best suited. And it would also be nice to provide some kind of lid: close it in case of rain and for the winter.

Brick barbecue with pipe: order

This barbecue option is a little more complicated, but also not the most complicated. The most important thing is that the combustion chamber here has a direct arch, and it is much easier to make it with a vaulted one. The brick frying chamber is raised to a height of 90 cm, the total height to the beginning of the pipe is 217.5 cm.

It all starts with preparing the foundation. For this barbecue oven, only a monolithic reinforced base (reinforcement step 15 cm) on a compacted crushed stone base is suitable. Waterproofing is spread in two layers on the dried foundation, then masonry begins. If the barbecue is made in a gazebo, the first row of masonry should begin at floor level. If the foundation is lower, lay out an additional row (or two) of bricks, and then begin laying according to the given diagram.

The first 9 rows do not require any special explanation. Lay exactly according to the plan, maintaining order, using halves and cut bricks, if indicated on the plan. Be sure to check the verticality of the resulting walls, as well as control the thickness of the mortar - 8-10 mm and the horizontal laying of each brick.

To control the thickness of the seam, you can use a reinforcement bar of the appropriate diameter. It is placed on the edge, the surface of the row is filled with mortar, and the excess just above the rod is cut off with a trowel. After laying and tapping the bricks, an even seam is obtained - the rod does not allow the brick to sink lower than necessary. The rod is then removed and placed higher.

To be able to lay the 6th row (solid), after laying the 5th, lay a strip of metal 4-5 mm thick, 40 mm wide. The length is slightly less than the span of the furnace - 1450 mm. 3 stripes are needed - one at the edge, two approximately in the middle of each row of bricks or as indicated below (11th row).

The layout of the next rows of barbecues is clear. Only in the 12th row, pay attention - you need bricks sawn lengthwise. It is also worth saying that the 12th and 13th rows are larger than the lower ones - forming a decorative “belt”.

The light color in these rows indicates fireclay brick (ША-8). Place it on the same composition of clay and sand (a small proportion of cement can be added). It is better not to use chamotte-based mixtures: they require very high temperatures for sintering, which are unattainable in outdoor barbecues. As a result, this solution may subsequently simply crumble.

At this part of the order, everything is also clear: we begin to form the arch of the firebox. It overlaps on the 22nd row, in which a gradual narrowing begins.

The formation of the vault continues, which in the 30th row turns into a chimney. Next, alternate the 30th and 31st rows until the required height is reached.

Choosing a design

To build a simple and functional barbecue oven with your own hands, you are primarily guided by your tastes and preferences, and financial capabilities. If the structure will be used almost every day, it is necessary to consider one of the most thorough options, including a barbecue and other frying structures, cutting tables, a place to store armfuls of firewood, etc.

If you use the stove once or twice a month, there is no point in organizing a grandiose construction project. It is enough to build a small oven with a frying compartment in size and area.

Choosing a convenient location

When choosing the optimal location, it is necessary to take into account the location of trees and other vegetation on the site. There cannot be branches above the stove that will quickly burn. Free space should allow you to organize an adjacent recreation area.

The brick gets very hot, so the back wall should not be adjacent to other building structures. A very optimal option is to arrange an alpine slide behind.

Purchase of materials and preparation of working tools

You can build a barbecue oven with your own hands using fireclay and ceramic bricks. If you combine them with each other, you should pay attention to the difference in temperature expansion when constructing sections separated from each other or arranging expansion joints.

The classic solution for stoves is sand-clay. The cement-based mass will not withstand sudden changes in temperature and will begin to crack. The ratio of sand and clay varies and depends on the quality and properties of the latter component. Most common mixture:

  • 1-2 parts sand
  • 1 part clay
  • 0.25-0.3 parts water

In addition to the basic building materials, the work will require: cement and roofing felt for building the foundation, large stones, boards for formwork, metal, and working tools.

Let's get started

It is not difficult to build a barbecue oven with your own hands from brick. The entire work process is divided into three stages:

  • Preparation of a drawing, sketch and calculation of the required building materials, shopping for everything necessary
  • Building a foundation that can support the weight of the future barbecue
  • Brickwork

Having completed the work, you can think about reliably protecting the structure from the vagaries of nature by building a small canopy.

Preparation of the drawing

The barbecue should be placed on a concrete base. Most designs have at least 2 compartments - a cutting table and a spacious roasting pan. It will be possible to embed a sink into the first one. The roaster is equipped with a pipe and a roof to prevent smoke.

The drawing must contain each of the dimensions. If something needs to be adjusted, you need to proceed from the dimensions of the purchased brick (usually 25x12x6 cm).

BBQ oven base

Before you build the formwork for a barbecue oven with your own hands, you need to prepare the area. The dimensions of the structure are marked with ropes (plus 10-15 cm) and a layer of fertile soil is removed. If there is a wooden gazebo nearby, a concrete base 60-70 cm wide is installed in front.

The most optimal base is a reinforced monolithic slab with a thickness of more than 0.3 m. A gravel-crushed stone cushion (10-15 cm) is placed under it and waterproofing is installed (regular roofing felt is laid) to prevent deforming effects in winter.

Then a formwork made of boards is installed, raised above the ground by about 10-15 cm. If the soil crumbles, it is installed to the full depth. Afterwards, a reinforcement frame is made, preferably from 10-14 mm metal. The rods are laid in a lattice with a cell size of 20x20 cm and tied with wire. You need two such meshes: the first is placed on the bottom, the second - 5 cm below the top of the base.

The solution is prepared from frost-resistant cement grade M200 or higher. After pouring and compacting with a vibrator, you must wait for the foundation to dry completely (up to 2-3 weeks). It is covered with film and sprinkled with water on hot days. The boards can be dismantled after 5-7 days.

Order and layout of masonry

Having removed the formwork and waited until the concrete has hardened, the most important stage begins - laying bricks. Markings are applied to the slab, indicating the dimensions of the future structure. You need to apply the level again and make sure that the surface is horizontal. If significant errors are found, they are eliminated.

Rows from the first to the fourth must be laid with a spoon dressing. In front of the fifth row, a 40x40 mm corner is placed on the front side - it will act as a kind of support. To create bases for the pallet and shelf, the sides of the fifth row are placed with a tying bandage.

The spoon dressing should be followed when laying rows six to eight. Row number nine is made in the same way as row five to form supports for the table top and grille.

At this point, the construction of the table can be considered complete. Next, the barbecue oven with your own hands will be built only from the roaster side. Bricks are laid again using a spoon bandage from the tenth to the fourteenth rows. In front of the fifteenth row, a metal corner is again placed on the front side, acting as a support for the stove vault. The fifteenth row is laid.

Then you need to arrange a gradually tapering vault. It can be done by alternating the splint and spoon ligaments, gradually moving them to the center. In the sixteenth row, stitching is done on the front side, spoon stitching is done on the sides. In the seventeenth row, on the contrary, in the eighteenth row we change again. The resulting protrusions can be arranged according to their purpose.

From the nineteenth to the twenty-first rows are laid with spoon masonry.

The twenty-second poison begins the pipe. In the twenty-third row, the necessary narrowing is made and work continues in the same sequence to the desired height. The higher it is, the better the traction will be.

In the penultimate row, windows are made to remove smoke. The last row will be laid completely.

Finishing work

It is necessary to install shelves, a finishing countertop, a frying grid and a tray for coals. The latter is made from a sheet of steel with folded edges. The minimum side height is about 5 cm.

You can take the grate from your old oven or buy a new chrome model. The main thing is that it fits in size. Tabletops and shelves are made of moisture-resistant material.

The top of the pipe should be covered with a stainless steel roof. This will protect the smoke windows from rain. The monolithic slab is covered with tiles or porcelain stoneware to prevent moisture from penetrating inside.

You can build a full-fledged gazebo around the barbecue stove, the canopy of which will cover the structure. It is very important that flammable objects and materials are located away from brick walls, which become very hot.

By welding the smoking chamber, the functionality of the stove will expand.
