LDPE for pipe production

Polyethylene is obtained by polymerizing ethylene, a well-known organic compound and a common raw material for the chemical industry. HDPE pipes are manufactured by continuous extrusion of molten raw materials.

Deciphering the name of HDPE pipes made of polyethylene

PE pipes - stand for "polyethylene pipes".

The abbreviation HDPE stands for "low pressure polyethylene". This is the name of the material from which the pipe is made.

There are two main technological processes for the production of polyethylene:

  1. High pressure polyethylene (LDPE, LDPE) is obtained at high pressure (150-300 MPa) and temperature (200-260 ° C), and the result is low density polyethylene - LDPE or LPDE (LowDensityPolyethylene). Such polyethylene is used for packaging. It is soft, plastic, stretches easily and is absolutely unsuitable for the manufacture of pipes.
  2. Low pressure polyethylene (HDPE, HDPE) is obtained at low pressure (0.1-2 MPa) and temperature (120-150 ° C), and as a result, high-density polyethylene HDPE or HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) is obtained at the output. Such polyethylene has a high density and strength, and it is it that is suitable for the production of HDPE pipes.

Thus, the abbreviation HDPE in the name of the pipes means the features of the manufacturing technology, the characteristics of the raw materials.

PND pipes for water supply

The international name HDPE refers to the high density of polyethylene.

HDPE has a number of useful properties that make it possible to produce pipes from it.

Specifications

HDPE polyethylene pipes must be produced in Russia in accordance with the quality standards prescribed in GOST 18599-2001.

The purpose of HDPE pipes for water supply is the laying of pipelines and water and gas supply systems.

Prices for HDPE pipes for water and gas pipelines

HDPE pipes have an advantageous ratio of characteristics, long service life and price.

Due to this combination, they are widely used for laying pipelines of gas supply systems, sewerage, as pipes for domestic and drinking water supply, for internal wiring and underground cable laying, etc.

Types and cost

Polyethylene pipes HDPE 100 (sdr 11, 13.6, 17, 17.6, 21 and 26) are pipes based on the PE 80 series. This modification has improved characteristics, they withstand high working pressure, have a maximum tensile strength (1000 hours with internal tension, this means that the pipe will not crack if the water inside freezes) and good resistance to mechanical damage;

PND 80 polyethylene pipes are lightweight and reliable products that do not need additional protection. Have a long service life.

The price of PE 80 polyethylene pipes (for gas pipelines) is usually lower than for PE 100 pipes, since medium pressure polyethylene is used in the production.

Dimensions, diameters and markings

HDPE pipes are produced with an outer diameter (Dn) from 10 to 1200 mm, wall thickness (S) from 5 to 53.3 mm.

There is another important indicator in pipe marking - SDR, which is calculated as the ratio of the outer diameter to the wall thickness.

The lower the SDR value, the higher the operating pressure the pipe can withstand.

For example: with SDR9, the working pressure is 20 atmospheres, with SDR9 - 16 atm., with SDR13.6 - 12.5 atm., with SDR17 - 10 atm., and so on.

Manufacturers guarantee that when transporting water with a working pressure and a temperature of 20 ° C, the service life of the pipe is at least 50 years.

Marking and description of characteristics on the HDPE pipe

HDPE pipes for water supply according to international standards produceblack color with applied longitudinalblue stripe. A yellow stripe is applied to mark HDPE pipes for gas supply.

On the side wall of the pipe, a marking should be applied indicating the diameter, working pressure, temperature. The information about the manufacturer is also indicated.

If there is no corresponding marking on the product, this is a violation and calls into question the quality.

Advantages and applications of polyethylene pipes

Currently, the industry produces HDPE pipes for various purposes, diameters.

In this particular case, we are interested in HDPE pipes for water supply.

The blue bar indicates that the pipe is intended for cold water supply networks

Advantages of HDPE pipes compared to analogues:

  • Polyethylene pipes are not destroyed by water and are not subject to corrosion;
  • Polyethylene is not afraid of acids and alkalis;
  • Polyethylene pipes are protected from UV, since special components are added to the raw materials during production;
  • Small price.
  • Ease of installation work.
  • When water freezes inside, they do not collapse.
  • Long service life.
  • When laying in the ground, they are not afraid of soil movements and earthquakes.

PE pipe connections

The connection of HDPE pipes can be done in several ways:

  • Welding HDPE pipes. One of the most reliable connections. For this, there are special welding machines that heat the ends of equally cut pipes to the required temperature, and then connect the pipes. A reliable connection is formed, pipelines with this type of connection can be laid in the ground.
  • Connection with compression fittings for HDPE pipes. Various types of fittings of different diameters are produced industrially for different diameters of HDPE pipes: couplings, tees, elbows, thread transitions, flanges and others. In a short time, using HDPE pipes, you can assemble a water supply system of any configuration and for any needs. This type of connection is serviced, so laying in the ground is not recommended.
  • Connection by electrofusion welding with thermoresistive fittings. This connection is also called electrofusion welding. There are special fittings of various types and diameters, which in their structure have special heating coils and sensors, and on the surface - terminals for connecting a welding machine. The prepared ends of the pipes are inserted into the fitting, the welding machine is connected. Data on the welding mode are applied to the fitting using a barcode that the machine reads. When the welding mode is started, the built-in coil is heated and the material of the fitting and pipe is melted. The result is a strong connection that can be laid in open ground.
  • Flange connections. They are mainly used for transitional connections with other types of pipes.

laying in the ground

When laying HDPE polyethylene pipes in open ground (into the ground), it is taken into account that the depth of the trench should be below the level of soil freezing.

It is different in every region. For example, in Moscow it is 1.4 meters, and in Volgograd 1.2 meters.

The width of the trench may be the minimum required to accommodate the pipe.

It is optimal to lay an integral section of the pipe into the ground that does not contain joints.

If there are connections, they must be made in a technologically acceptable way (see above).

Conclusion:

  1. The HDPE pipe is the best option for a pipeline for water supply;
  2. Low cost of pipes with a long service life;
  3. Easy transportation, installation and installation due to flexibility and low weight;
  4. Required to be labeled
  5. HDPE pipes for plumbing are marked with a blue stripe;
  6. The use of compression fittings in underground piping is not recommended.

HDPE pipes are used for domestic and drinking water supply, pool water exchange systems. They have good consumer properties, allow you to reduce the cost of laying pipelines due to the low cost of installation. On the walls with a minimum roughness coefficient, build-ups are not formed, the throughput does not deteriorate during the operational period. Products are resistant to pressure surges, water hammer, squeezing. If the operating conditions are observed, the accident rate is practically zero.

Polyethylene pipes are the most durable option for laying water pipes. They have increased wear resistance and strength. Differ in resistance to corrosion. They are attracted by low cost and minimal costs for the manufacture of pipelines.

Important: HDPE water pipes are used for cold water supply.

PND water pipe: solid advantages.

The availability of HDPE pipes in comparison with metal counterparts makes them indispensable when equipping residential buildings and private facilities. The products are light weight and easy to transport. Resistant to aggressive environments (alkaline, acidic, salty). True, they can be damaged by contact with nitric acid. They also have other advantages:

Ease of installation.

Underground installation does not require the use of insulation, protective covers. But when laying on the ground, it is necessary to provide protection from exposure to UV rays.

High elasticity.

Even if the water inside the pipes freezes, their rupture, deformation or other damage is excluded.

Versatility.

Suitable for both indoor and outdoor plumbing.

biological stability.

High ambient humidity will not lead to rotting of pipes or accumulation of microorganisms on their inner and outer walls.

Long service life.

Due to the lack of special maintenance requirements HDPE plumbing pipe, subject to correct operating conditions, can regularly perform its functions for more than 50 years. Unlike metal and concrete counterparts, they are minimally affected by external influences.

An important advantage of the products is their simple assembly. Connection by welding the ends of pipes or fixing with fittings is carried out quickly. A similar assembly of metal or concrete pipes takes several times longer.

The price of a HDPE water pipe.

When installing a water supply system, in most cases, the budget comes first. A comparison of many pipe types reveals a clear winner: HDPE pipe. The installation of communications created with the help of these products has a number of advantages. The price of a HDPE water pipe per meter is one of the lowest. Its production is less expensive, hence the availability. But when creating a water supply system, not only cost should be considered. There are many parameters from which the final estimate is built.

In particular, you need to calculate the delivery and ease of installation. Below you can read about the ease of laying a HDPE pipe for water. With other similar products, everything is more complicated. For example, metal pipes will require more labor-intensive welding. That is why builders prefer to buy a HDPE water pipe, and not look for unnecessary problems with analogues.

Application HDPE water pipe for cold water supply due to high quality and reliability. Polyethylene pipes are suitable for assembling water pipes, the working environment of which does not exceed 40 degrees above zero. Such products can be used to supply drinking or industrial water. Compliance with sanitary and technical standards completely excludes changes in the characteristics of the transmitted working environment. Installation of cold water supply from HDPE pipes is suitable for the following objects:

  • Residential multi-apartment and private houses;
  • Catering establishments (restaurants, cafes, canteens);
  • Production facilities (shops, plants and factories);
  • Bases of rest and improvement (sanatoriums, country complexes);
  • Educational, administrative, public institutions (schools, kindergartens, universities, hospitals).

HDPE pipes are suitable for laying water pipes to farmlands and other objects remote from central water supply systems. Soldering machines are usually used to create permanent joints at the joints. But they can also be replaced by electric couplings equipped with devices for quick welding of joints. For the manufacture of collapsible plumbing systems, conventional fittings are used. The use of adapters allows you to collect cold water supply of any complexity and design.

Where to buy a HDPE water pipe?

So, you have decided to buy a HDPE pipe and are now looking for a reliable supplier. The choice may not be so easy. Price is the determining factor, but there are other things to consider. Since we are talking about a water pipe, a GOST certificate of conformity should be required. Sometimes, under the guise of a water pipe, they sell a technical pipe. It is quite easy to distinguish it: there is no blue stripe on the cable pipe. But this is if we are talking about a conscientious manufacturer. In the face of fierce competition, small businesses go to different tricks. Most often - the use of recycled materials, which is prohibited by GOST for water supply. Therefore, it is highly desirable to know that the pipe manufacturer has a good reputation and binding documents. You can safely buy a HDPE pipe for water from us: the reviews of our regular partners speak for themselves. You can buy the right amount in Moscow, from a factory in the Moscow region, or order delivery to any corner of Russia. Drink water only from quality pipes!

Pipe HDPE pressure water supply and non-pressure technical. Similarities and differences.

Some unscrupulous contractors, less often sellers and, in exceptional cases, manufacturers, issue products for technical needs according to the type of water pressure HDPE pipes. In turn, consumers are glad that they saved on laying communications. However, such savings can turn into serious problems. First of all, we are talking about the health of end users.

Water is the basis of life, and when harmful impurities enter it, the body of people and animals that consume it suffers. The HDPE water pipe is made from virgin HDPE, which is chemically inert. It does not contain active substances and does not release them into flowing water. But what about the technical pipe and why is it sometimes given out as a water pipe?

The HDPE technical pipe is created from recycled material. Most often, rejection or the remains of drinking pipes are used for these purposes. Other wastes containing low-density polyethylene are also used. Pieces of polyethylene are crushed, go through other stages of processing, and shredded into new granules. This is how it turns out to be secondary.

In principle, a technical HDPE pipe is considered conditionally safe: it practically does not react with the external environment. Only the standards for the pipe for cable and water are different. In a non-pressure technical pipe, a certain amount of impurities is allowed. There is nothing to worry about, as long as it is not used for transportation: microscopic inclusions can get into the water. In addition, non-pressure pipes hold less pressure and can only serve as a drain or to protect the cable. To summarize, a technical HDPE pipe is safe and inexpensive, but its use is prohibited for the delivery of drinking water.

Fittings are used for connecting and terminating pipes, mounting rotary and branching sections of the water supply system. HDPE fittings are rigid and durable, easy to install. Pipes of the same size are joined with straight fittings. Products of different diameters are connected by reducing fittings. For the installation of water pipes, cast fittings can be used. Tear-resistant cast fittings are welded to the pipe with a special soldering iron, withstand pressure surges. This type of installation is recommended when laying pipes in concrete. Collapsible systems are created using compression fittings. Types of fittings used for installation:

  • Equal bore coupling is used to create tight joints of pipe joints of the same size.
  • Adapters are designed to connect polyethylene and metal products.
  • The compensation clutch is used when changing from a smaller diameter to a larger one.
  • Bends are needed to create corners, drain water from the main line.
  • The flange coupling is used when connecting large diameter pipe products.
  • The plug sleeve will ensure the closure of the end holes.
  • Crosses and tees are needed to create branches in the plumbing system.

Our plant manufactures and sells HDPE water pipes and fittings of any size.

Pipe products comply with GOST 18599-2001. Products have a smooth surface without bubbles, cracks, foreign inclusions. Subject to permissible thermal conditions (up to 40 degrees), pipe products will last at least 50 years. A short-term increase in temperature to 60-65 degrees does not affect the mechanical characteristics.

When water freezes, the diameter of the product increases by 5-7%, and after thawing it returns to its original state. With prolonged exposure to low temperatures, the material is not destroyed. A prolonged increase in thermal performance above 40 degrees leads to a loss of ring stiffness and strength. Despite the limitations of HDPE pipes have several advantages:

  • Low weight;
  • Low thermal conductivity;
  • Tensile strength;
  • Do not require maintenance throughout the entire period of operation;
  • Plastic;
  • Corrosion resistance.

The capacity of the water supply system does not deteriorate over time. Unlike metal pipes, there is no corrosion overgrowth. The inner walls of HDPE pipes become smoother over time. The polymeric material under load is characterized by the property of creep. Within 10 years, without damage to performance, the cross section increases by 1.5% and by about 3% over the entire period of operation of the pipeline.

PE pipe for water is made from grades of polyethylene that meet sanitary standards. Regardless of the medium, the material is chemically inert. Our plant fully complies with GOST for water HDPE pipes. If necessary, you can request certificates.

Pipe water plastic PND from the producer.

Our company independently produces and sells HDPE plastic water pipes. In addition, we can purchase products in dealer stores. Before placing an order, you need to ask yourself: why is it better to buy plumbing plastic HDPE pipes directly from the factory?

The most banal answer is the low price. Of course, no one will let go of one meter. Any pipe plant works with at least hundreds of meters. If you have a project for supplying communications to the building, then cooperation with the manufacturer is already becoming profitable. If it is necessary to lay kilometers of water supply, then there are no alternatives to direct purchases.

In addition, our company has all the GOST water pipe compliance certificates. In addition, we note the proven schemes for the delivery of a water polyethylene pipe directly to the object.

Dimensions and other characteristics of the HDPE water pipe.

Products are black with a blue stripe. Additionally, a marking is indicated that determines the type of materials used, the dimensions of the diameter and wall thickness. For example, PE-80 or PE-100. Medium and large HDPE pipes are sold in lengths. Despite their high elasticity, their delivery in coils is unacceptable. Transportation of products is carried out by machines with open platforms or closed awnings.

The performance characteristics and dimensions of HDPE water pipes depend on the characteristics and quality of the materials from which they were made. When choosing products, you need to take into account their dimensions, parameters. They will indicate the possibility of using pipes for laying water supply systems at a particular facility. With proper operation, dismantling and reassembly of HDPE water pipes for cold water from previously used pipes is allowed.

One of the most important parameters of a PE pipe is the load capacity. It is determined by the resistance limit, is set in MPa. Therefore, the use of products in different water supply systems must be carried out in accordance with the specified characteristics. Otherwise, if the permissible pressure is exceeded, the pipe will simply burst. Another important characteristic of products is their throughput. It indicates the volume of water flowing through the pipes for a certain period of time and directly depends on the internal diameter.

The plumbing is mounted without special equipment, you will need a cone-shaped end knife for processing the ends, a hacksaw for trimming. When laying a water pipe in the ground, a cushion of gravel or sand is created. It will prevent deformation in case of subsidence of the soil. If necessary, the pipe is bent with a building hair dryer. Products must not be bent at a right angle; a transition fitting is used when connecting.

Installation of HDPE water pipes is carried out in a one-piece and detachable way. Butt or electrofusion welding provides a rigid hermetic connection. Installation with compression fittings is easy to carry out independently, suitable for hard-to-reach places. At the cut ends, bevels of 2-3 mm are made, a union nut is screwed on, then an o-ring is put on. The free edge is inserted all the way into the connecting part, the union nut is screwed onto the thread of the fitting. The elements are clamped manually to prevent deformation of the end of the pipe and fitting, overtightening of the nut. The connection can be carefully tightened with a wrench.

HDPE pipes for water supply are produced by screw extrusion from low-pressure polyethylene. HDPE is a familiar, common name for consumers. Manufacturers, following the GOST regulations, label them with the abbreviation PE - polyethylene.

The properties of this material make it possible to use it in the form of pipes in a variety of areas for transporting not only water, but also other liquids and gases. In this article, you will learn all about these unique properties, as well as how to install pipelines.

What is HDPE and what are its benefits

Low pressure polyethylene has the following features, many of which are not characteristic of other materials for the manufacture of pipes:

  • Strength to mechanical influences;
  • Inertness in relation to aggressive environments;
  • Antibacterial properties;
  • Elasticity;
  • Dielectric properties;
  • Insufficient resistance to high temperatures.

The last feature does not allow the use of HDPE pipes for hot water supply, because at temperatures above 80 degrees they begin to soften.

But due to other characteristics, it is possible to use HDPE pressure pipes for water supply (drinking and technical), sewer systems (see) and gas pipelines. And also for protection against water and external influences of high-voltage cables laid in the ground.

How to recognize HDPE pipes

The form of production of polyethylene pipes depends on their diameter and wall thickness. These can be bays of different lengths from 50 to 200 m or sections up to 12 meters long.

Pipe color is black. The surface can be marked in the form of stripes of different colors, indicating their purpose. For example, HDPE pipes for drinking water supply are marked with blue stripes. And the lack of marking indicates that the products can only be used for industrial water.

How to choose quality pipes

The quality of these products is regulated by GOST 18599-2001 "Polyethylene pressure pipes".

The requirements for them are:

  • The outer and inner surfaces of the pipes must be smooth;
  • They should not have cracks, shells and foreign inclusions;
  • Only slight waviness and longitudinal stripes are allowed within tolerances.

Unfortunately, not all manufacturers producing HDPE pipes for cold water supply or other needs are conscientious. Some of them, to reduce the cost, add recycled plastic waste to the main raw material.

You can detect such a fake by the following signs:

  • Unpleasant, often pungent chemical odor;
  • Dark gray color, uneven coloring;
  • Different wall thickness around the circumference, which can be detected by examining the end of the pipe;
  • The presence of foreign inclusions and surface defects;
  • Lack of digital and alphabetic marking, which should consist of a GOST number, the name of the manufacturer, an indication of the diameter and thickness of the pipe walls, and a strength index (PE80 or PE100);

Note. Polyethylene PE80 has less strength and density than PE100. Of these pipes, free-flow water supply pipelines of HDPE are most often mounted. Whereas products with a strength of PE100 are intended for the installation of pressure systems.

  • Low price compared to similar products from other manufacturers.

Advantages

Perhaps the main thing that summer residents value these pipes for is that they do not burst in frost when water freezes in them. This is a very valuable property when the water supply is actively used only in the warm season.

You can safely not drain all the water from the system, do not blow it out before conservation for the winter, do not bury the pipes very deeply and do not insulate them.

Other equally valuable qualities include:

  • Long service life, reaching 50-60 years;
  • Resistance to aggressive environments;
  • High elasticity, allowing you to make radius turns without the use of connecting elements;
  • Water hammer resistance;
  • Large length, which allows less frequent use of welding or fittings for the HDPE water supply pipe and increase the speed of installation;
  • Maintainability, the possibility of remounting at low cost;
  • Bacteriological and toxicological safety.

Piping installation methods

The polyethylene pipeline can be laid both outside and inside buildings. Its installation is carried out in different ways, the choice of which depends on the diameter, the method of water supply (pressure or non-pressure), the availability of special tools and equipment.

Advice. Since HDPE pipes are not used for hot water supply, when laying openly inside residential buildings, it is better to use other types of pipes that are the same for cold and hot water.

Butt welding

This method is used mainly for the assembly of large-diameter main pipelines, since all others are not so reliable and convenient to connect HDPE pipes of 100 mm or more to each other. And they can reach up to 1200 mm.

For such welding, special electric heaters are used that melt the ends.

The process looks like this:

  • Two connected pipes are set along the same axis and centered, a heater is installed between them;

  • When the ends begin to melt, the electric heater is removed, and the pipes are shifted close;
  • In order for the joint to cool and gain strength, it is left in a fixed position for a while.

Compared to the strength of the pipe itself, the strength of such a joint is 80-90%. Its disadvantages include the presence of a protruding seam.

Being inside the pipe, it interferes with the water flow. That is why, butt welding is not used for thin-walled pipes of small diameter, in which such interference will be very significant.

Electrofusion welding

This method suggests using special fittings for HDPE pipes for cold water supply, inside of which there is a low-temperature coil.

When an electric current is connected, it warms up, reliably soldering the elements together. The connection is no less strong than the pipe itself.

For reference. This installation method is the fastest and most reliable, but also the most expensive, since electrical fittings are not cheap.

Diffusion welding

This is the most popular connection in the construction of water supply systems for private country houses. To assemble them with your own hands, you need a special soldering iron with nozzles of different diameters and simple fittings.

Fittings for small diameter pipes Fittings for main pipes

Pipes can also be cut with a hacksaw, strictly at 90 degrees. Before welding, the ends must be cleaned of chips and chamfered from them.

After connecting the elements, they must be allowed to cool in a fixed position. Approximate heating and cooling times for pipes of different diameters are shown in the table above.

The connection is very reliable, the seams, when properly welded, do not leak even over time, so the pipeline assembled in this way can be laid underground.

For this:

  • They dig a trench 1.5-2 meters deep, depending on the level of soil freezing;

Advice. When using a heating cable, HDPE water pipes for water supply can not be buried much.

  • The bottom of the trench is cleaned of stones that can push through and deform the walls of the pipes, if necessary, make a sand bed;
  • An installed pipeline is laid in a trench, and a connection is made to a well, well or main network;
  • Water is supplied to the system to check its integrity. The installation instructions insist on this stage, otherwise later, in case of a malfunction, all the work will have to be redone;
  • If necessary, the pipes are insulated, or a heating cable is laid;
  • Bury a trench with compaction and spilling the soil.

Assembly on compression fittings

But this is the only collapsible type of assembly, very popular for arranging a country water supply system intended for irrigation and seasonal water supply. HDPE water supply pipes and fittings for them, in this case, only small diameters are used. Maximum up to 110 mm.

But this is also a rarity, since practically no one has a need to lay such a large pipeline.

The most popular HDPE pipes for water supply are 25 mm. They make the main supply branches to the water points. A 32-mm pipe often serves as a unifying highway for them.

To understand the essence of installation, you need to understand the device of compression fittings.

  1. Clamping nut in the form of a cap with a thread covering the junction;
  2. Collet or clamping ring made of polyoxymethylin, fixing the joint and protecting it from mechanical damage;
  3. Sleeve made of polypropylene for pressing the pipeline, and eliminating the risk of its damage when the pressure in the system increases;
  4. O-ring made of nitrile rubber, which ensures the tightness of the connection of the pipe with the fitting;
  5. Polyethylene body with external thread on which the clamping nut is screwed.

Now look how it all comes together and works.

HDPE water supply pipes - installation is carried out in the following sequence:

Image Description

The pipe is cut at 90 degrees.

To facilitate its entry into the body, it is necessary to chamfer the outer side of the end at an angle of 15-20 degrees.

The fitting is disassembled. First, clamping nuts with a collet and a bushing in them are put on the pipes, then sealing rings.

The ends of the pipes are inserted into the fitting until they stop, and the clamping nuts are screwed onto the thread.

Everything is done by hand, without the use of additional tools.

Thanks to the threaded connection and rubber o-rings, the joint is strong and tight

The advantages of this method, in addition to the collapsibility of the system, include:

  • Ease of assembly, for the implementation of which no additional materials such as tow or FUM tape are needed. Tightening of connections is carried out by hand force, without the use of keys and other tools;

Advice. You need to tighten the thread tightly, but you should not be too zealous so as not to rip it off or deform the pipe.

  • Maintainability of the system with cutting out the damaged area, and its restoration using additional couplings.

He also has shortcomings. This is the dependence of the reliability of the connection on the quality of the rubber sealing ring. It quickly becomes unusable if the pipeline is constantly exposed to sunlight or frost.

The pipe itself for HDPE water supply systems will remain intact when water freezes in it, but the fittings do not tolerate such an impact. This seriously limits the scope of application of pipelines installed in this way.

Therefore, they are laid inside buildings, or laid in shallow trenches to facilitate dismantling at the end of the season or for repair work.

Which of the described methods to choose is up to you. Each of them has its own advantages, but not everyone can be available due to the high cost of connecting elements or the lack of special equipment for assembly.

The last method is the easiest. But for the installation of a permanent water supply system with underground laying, it is not suitable due to the low reliability of the connections that cannot withstand the high pressure in the pipes for a long time.

Conclusion

As you can see, HDPE cold water pipes really have unique properties, and several assembly methods allow you to choose the best one for your capabilities and system requirements.

If you decide to use them for plumbing in the house or in the country, watch the video in this article for more detailed information.

For quite a long time, people could not even imagine that soon polymer pipes would be used instead of iron for sewer, water, and gas pipes. At the present time, their use is considered budgetary, since the material is considered more durable and durable compared to iron.

What is HDPE pipe

HDPE pipe - this name stands for low-pressure polyethylene, is made of a flexible and durable substance that has a common name - plastic. Products created on its basis are impact-resistant, strong, capable of serving mankind for decades. Used for laying sewerage and water supply.

Raw materials for the manufacture of polyethylene products

The raw material consists of granulated polyethylene. It is divided into two grades: HDPE (low pressure polyethylene) and PVD (high pressure polyethylene). The raw materials are subsequently used to produce packaging containers for the storage and transportation of food and other products. Polyethylene is used in the production of large-sized plastic products, such as HDPE pipes.

Methods for manufacturing HDPE pipes

There are three methods for manufacturing HDPE pipes:

  1. Pneumatic molding - products are obtained from a liquid substance with a large molecular weight, which is poured into specially prepared molds, where it is further processed by a high-pressure pneumatic grease blower.
  2. Extrusion - a method of obtaining products by extrusion, that is, the manufacture of hollow materials that differ in shape.
  3. Injection molding is a fairly common method for the production of polymer products. The process takes a short period of time, during which the raw material is poured under high pressure into the container of the machine, then immediately cooled. As a result, a product of a given shape is obtained.

Properties of low density polyethylene

The main properties of HDPE:

  • is a waterproof material;
  • has a good ability to withstand sudden changes in temperature;
  • inert to the action of chemical solvents under normal operating conditions.

Technical characteristics of HDPE pipes

Dimensions of PE pipes

The assortment of PE pipes is presented in table 1.

SDR coefficient for HDPE pipes

The SDR coefficient is a standard dimensional ratio that determines the size of the walls and the circumference of the pipes. This information is needed to determine the water pressure that a pipe of one size or another can withstand. With a small coefficient, it is necessary to use a lower pressure head compared to a pipe with thicker walls. When buying products, pay attention to the data that are indicated in the documents for the product.

PE pipe weight

The weight of a PE pipe also depends on the degree of density, because the thicker and wider the PE product, the naturally and higher its mass.

To determine the weight of a polyethylene product, you can focus on the theoretical weight indicated in tables 2 and 3.

What pressure can HDPE pipes withstand?

According to GOST, there are four brands of the most common sizes of polyethylene pipes:

  • PE32;
  • PE63;
  • PE80;
  • PE100.

The last digit indicates the degree of density of HDPE products, which determines what kind of pressure this or that PE pipe can withstand.

Marking of polyethylene pipes

Marking example: PE 80 SDR 17.6 - 90 x 5.1 technical GOST 18599-2001.

It is deciphered as follows: a polyethylene pipe with a diameter of 90 mm with an SDR coefficient of 17.6 and a wall thickness of 5.1 mm. Withstands a pressure of 0.60 MPa, complies with the specified regulatory document.

The use of polyethylene pipes

HDPE pipes are used in various spheres of human activity. The pressure sewer pipe differs from ordinary HDPE pipes in that it has a much higher density. Since it is used to provide water to remote areas, the urban population, it is able to withstand significant external and internal loads.

Yulia Petrichenko, expert

Non-pressure sewage is the installation of a lightweight version of pipes that can be used in small areas. There are several types of non-pressure pipes:

  1. Pipes for water supply - PE80-PE100 are used in areas with a length of 6-13 meters. Use to protect cable wires is strictly prohibited, since there is a possibility that non-pressure pipes may not withstand internal pressure and burst. In such cases, only pressure pipes can be used.
  2. Non-pressure pipes are also used to transport liquids and gases.
  3. Protective cover for electrical cable - used to prevent accidental penetration of moisture to the electrical wires for small spaces. It looks like a plastic tube.

Fittings for polyethylene pipes

With their help, HDPE pipes are installed, regardless of size and location. They are made in the same way as polyethylene pipes. Able to withstand natural disasters, including the effects of low and high temperatures. For a long time withstand the action of any chemical elements, retain their original shape. They are used to give the pipe the appropriate direction.

There are four types of fittings:

  • electrowelded - designed to connect gas and water pipes. Joined by electric welding;
  • cast - during their connection, butt welding machines are used. In the process, only the part that needs to be attached is heated. After heating the base, the parts of the fitting are attached to the other half and immediately cooled, after which they are soldered;
  • compression - the use of welding during installation is not required, since the connection is made using a lock nut;
  • welded - mainly used for cold water supply. This type refers to a non-separable type, since the connection is carried out during the production of these products, it is produced in the form of ready-made pipe bend connections.
