How to choose a laminate for an apartment in terms of quality

All types of flooring have the same composition:

  • fiberboard base impregnated with a water-repellent solution;
  • a layer of paper impregnated with resin;
  • decorative paper with wood imitation;
  • top laminated.

There are only three criteria to consider when choosing a good laminate:

  • Class.

The main values on the market are: 31, 32, 33 and 34 - these numbers indicate the durability and wear resistance of the coating. The higher the index, the better the characteristics of the material. When deciding which laminate flooring to choose for your home, you need to take into account the differences in zones. For the bedroom and rooms with low traffic, the use of a low class is allowed - 31, and in the kitchen and in the hallway you can not do without coating marked 33-34.

  • Manufacturer.

The upper part of the material is a layer of resins and impregnations, which also contain dangerous formaldehyde. It is impossible to completely exclude it from production, but certified and well-known companies reduce its content to a minimum. Do not save money by choosing a company that offers too cheap products.

  • Connection type.

Laying laminate is easy to handle - the panels fit together like puzzles. There are two connection types: Lock and Click. In the first case, the parts must be tapped with a hammer to each other in order to securely fix them. It is better to entrust the installation to a specialist so as not to damage the fasteners. The second option is considered more durable and is made by snapping the panels at an angle of 45 ̊.

The material can imitate not only wood, but also stone or tile. The choice of texture and color is determined by the interior decor and the overall design of the room - these criteria are taken into account individually.

Before buying the bulk of the material, it is advisable to conduct several tests. How to independently determine the quality of the laminate:

  1. To test the strength on the surface, you need to put carbon paper - and throw a metal ball on it. If the coating is of poor quality, small cracks will be noticeable.
  2. The coating is tested with an ordinary felt-tip pen. Apply a drawing - and then try to wash it off. If the lines are erased without problems and do not leave streaks, the laminate will not lose its beauty over time.
  3. Ideally, locks are soaked with wax before being sold. It is necessary to pour some water on the connections and wait a couple of hours. A good quality coating will not change, and a cheap material will warp.

Having decided to change the floors at home, many people are inclined in favor of the laminate. Durability, beauty, good performance - today it is really the best flooring in houses and apartments. Our laminate quality rating will introduce you to companies whose products will meet any expectations.

Berry Alloc

A Norwegian-Belgian firm that has combined its capacities to produce a unique pressure laminate (HPL). The scheme itself is simple: a pressed top layer with protective properties, decor and several layers of high-strength paper.

The resulting layer, according to its data, is much harder than a conventional laminate created by direct pressure. It is able to withstand almost all types of impacts.

Berry Alloc offers more than 18 series of laminate, and each series has about 20 types of decor. This is one of the largest assortments of collections in existence. Among them are with the effect of infinity, sound-diffusing, "under the tree" and very wide panels for large areas (up to 2.41 m). The cross section of the laminate is in the range from 8 to 11 mm.

The warranty is 20 years for commercial coverage and 30 years for residential use.

Pergo

A company from Sweden, the ancestor of the entire world laminate. The foundation was laid back in 1979 and since then, careful control at all stages of production allows Pergo to be considered the benchmark among this type of flooring. Upon request, the buyer is provided with all certificates, including environmental certificates.

Pergo has the widest range of products, which includes not only laminate 32 - 34 class, but also parquet, as well as vinyl coatings. The range of color schemes is very wide, with imitation of wood, stone and so on.

The width of the laminate starts from 12 to 21 cm, the length is from 120 cm to 2 m. The density of the board is 790 kg/m3, so the moisture resistance of the floor is very good.

The service life of Pergo is at least 25 years. The disadvantage of this laminate can only be considered a high price.

Kindl

Austrian family company with over 100 years of experience in wood processing. Today, the plant carries out all stages of production - from the processing of wood from its own alpine lands and ending with the sale of finished products.

Kaindl laminate is known for its density - 950g / m3. The coating almost perfectly imitates natural textures, as it is applied using an ultra-precise laser and synchronous embossing.

The company has patented a locking hitch, with rounded edges and additionally waxed. Therefore, the joints are waterproof and the service life of the laminate increases (up to 30 years). Thanks to all this, the products have been repeatedly recognized as the best on the European continent.

Haro

German brand that has been producing cork and parquet floors for over 30 years. Their motto is "the maximum approximation to natural textures." Laminate class 31-33, up to 10 mm thick, is sold in almost all countries of the world. And a special research bureau has developed aquaShield protective layer, soundproofing underlay, and special permaDur and bioTec coatings.

Haro laminate is really quiet, and the connection systems consist of 2 types: 4G connection (with additional reinforcing insert) and a classic lock that even beginners can understand.

Service life (from 15 to 30 years). The disadvantage, apart from the European cost, is that you will not find bright newfangled colors in Haro, only classics.

Quick step

A product of joint Russian-Belgian production, which have done a lot to ensure that modern laminate flooring is what it is today. V-shaped chamfer, glueless connection, the texture of the wooden floor - all these are inventions of the company.

Since 2011, Quick-Step products have been produced in Russia and have become cheaper. Pros: there is a protective layer from sunlight and static voltage; locks that allow you to assemble panels at an angle and on any plane. In addition, a wonderful series for bathrooms (Laguna) is produced, with waterproofing impregnation.

Warranty - a quarter of a century.

Egger

A joint venture (Austrian-German), which over half a century has grown from a small firm into a giant concern, currently numbering 17 plants. They create furniture and everything that is needed for the wooden decoration of the house. The plant also works on individual orders.

Laminate Egger (class 31-33) is one-, two- and three-lane. The manufacturer offers several types of locks: simple for quick installation and the UNI Fit system (connecting lamellas at various angles).

Egger has a special series of waterproof laminates for all areas where there is contact with water. Special connections of lamellas make such a surface absolutely impenetrable.

The service life of the laminate, depending on the series, ranges from 12 to 25 years.

HDM

Holz Dammers Moers, a German manufacturer that first appeared on the Russian market. For half a century of its existence, the company has launched the production of a wide range, from wall and ceiling panels to acoustic systems.

Their know-how is a mirror-gloss laminate using ELESGO technology. Lamellas are almost impossible to distinguish from parquet, they do not leave stains, and chips and scratches do not appear. The polyacrylic surface does not contain any toxic substances and is safe for people with lung problems. And on the reverse side there is a noise-absorbing layer, which will be quite useful in apartment buildings.

The only thing is that the laminate is produced in the range of 31-32 load classes, with a thickness of 7 to 9 mm. The price of such products is not cheap, but the service life is 25 years.

Ritter

A Russian company that stands out among other manufacturers in that it produces embossed and leather-like laminate. They do not have standard smooth lamellas, but snakeskin, rough cut boards, silkscreen and craquelure - please.

Products are in constant demand, and the range of Ritter is increasing every year. Locks are treated with wax, which ensures the moisture resistance of the coating.

Warranty within 30 years. The disadvantage can be considered the fact that dust and dirt accumulate on the embossed surface much more often.

Floorwood

A German corporation that started production in its native country for 10 years, and then transferred its facilities to Russia and China.

Products of class 32-34 can impress the buyer with the widest range of surfaces (16 collections in total). There are shortened and very long planks, of various widths, for porcelain stoneware and parquet.

Connections - simple (waxed) and 5G (volumetric fixation).

Products comply with Russian GOST. The service life is 25 years. The price, as for a Chinese product, is a bit high.

good way

Laminate from China broke into the Russian market in 2009, declaring itself in unusual colors, under the cultural traditions of different countries. Arabic, English series - each model will successfully fit into the existing interior. Also in their collections there is 3D embossing, with the selection of each element, which creates the effect of volume.

This laminate uses 2 types of glueless assembly (waxed and SuperLock), which allows you to assemble and disassemble the floors very quickly.

The laminate is certified according to Russian GOST and its service life is 30 years. Cons: There is a chemical smell.

Laminate flooring is increasingly being used for finishing floors. Manufacturers of this type of product have significantly improved its quality, and at present, laminate flooring is practically not inferior in terms of performance and decorative properties to parquet made from natural wood.

Gone are the days when laminate flooring wore out after six years, now its service life is more than twenty years. At the same time, the question of which laminate is better remains relevant. For the correct choice of material, it is necessary to determine its wear resistance class and other operating parameters.

Probably at least one room in a modern house is covered with laminate

Consider laminate flooring

The flooring made of laminate does not visually differ from the parquet floor, but at the same time the cost of its arrangement is significantly lower. Consumers appreciate this finishing material for the optimal ratio of price and performance. The advantages of laminate flooring include:

  • easy installation;
  • easy removal of traces of mechanical damage;
  • ecological cleanliness;
  • wonderful antibacterial properties;
  • long service life;
  • wide area of use.

In addition, such a coating has high decorative properties, it reliably imitates the texture of any natural material. A variety of colors allows you to successfully fit it into the interior of almost any room.

Laminate is a great option for flooring on the ground floor of your own home.

The disadvantages of the laminate include the fact that for its laying it is necessary to carefully level the base, otherwise the lock joints are quickly loosened and the floor begins to creak. In addition, when moisture penetrates into the flooring, the coating is deformed and becomes unusable.

In fairness, it should be noted that the above negative qualities can be corrected by proper styling and special processing tools.

It is useful to understand: what and how the coating is made of

In order to understand what kind of laminate is best, and how to properly operate the coating, it is useful to understand what and how it is made of. The structure of the material consists of several layers that have their own functional purpose:

  • Made of acrylate or melamine resin, the coating forms the outer protective layer. It protects the material from moisture and mechanical damage, on which the service life of the product largely depends.
  • The next layer has a decorative purpose. In expensive modifications, it is made of wood veneer, in cheaper ones it is made of artificial material with a pattern printed on it.
  • Impregnated with melamine-based resin, the so-called kraft board forms another layer. It has a protective function.
  • Lock joints are located in the next layer, which imparts rigidity to the entire product. It is made by hot pressing of crushed wood using a special technology.
  • The last layer has soundproofing and moisture-proof qualities. It is made of a polymer material or a paper base treated in a special way.

Standard Laminated Coating Structure

The manufacturing process uses high temperatures and pressures to create a strong, indestructible bond between the layers of the laminate. This determines the good resistance of the coating made from it to moisture and mechanical stress.

To increase strength, sometimes they even use metal layers in the form of special inserts. The best and most environmentally friendly laminate for the home is produced by companies that are members of the eplf association of manufacturers of this type of product.

What are the options for choosing panels?

Laminate panels should be selected according to the totality of their technical characteristics. The following parameters are of great operational importance:

  • wear resistance class;
  • features of lock connections and installation methods;
  • the quality of the decorative layer;
  • moisture resistance of the material.

The highest quality laminate in a particular case is determined by the presence of a combination of properties necessary for a given room. Depending on the functional purpose of the coating, a wide variety of products are produced.

What do laminate grades mean

Laminate classes mean the resistance of its outer layer to mechanical abrasion of the surface and other adverse effects. One or another class is assigned according to the results of comprehensive tests for resistance to impact loads, moisture, abrasion, and so on.

The so-called taber test is mandatory, during which a rotating disk with an abrasive coating is brought into contact with the test sample. Depending on the number of revolutions required for the initial damage to the outer layer and the subsequent loss of the operational properties of the product, the wear resistance class is determined.

It is marked with two numbers, the first of which characterizes the public (3) or residential (2) type of premises, the second, increasing from one to three, indicates the resistance of the coating to mechanical abrasion. There are currently six product classes.

Class 33 coating is able to withstand peak loads, it is used to equip the floors of sports fields and concert halls. Class 32 withstands shock loads well, it is used in offices and shops, in domestic use it is great for the hallway and kitchen. We can say that this is the best and highest quality option for the home. A further decrease in numbers indicates a deterioration in the performance of the surface. In this case, the answer to the question of which class is the best is again determined by the nature of the load.

Types and quality of interlocks

To choose a quality laminate, you need to familiarize yourself with the options for connecting panels. The installation of the flooring can be carried out using glue or interlocks.

The advantage of laying on glue is the formation of a seamless coating, forming a monolithic whole, well resistant to high humidity.

However, this method of flooring presents a certain complexity and requires high qualification of the performer. In addition, if some panels are damaged, they cannot be replaced, that is, such a coating cannot be removed at all. That is why at present this type of laminate is practically not used.

To facilitate and speed up the installation process, locking joints are made on the end surfaces of the panels. They are made in the form of a figuratively carved spike and a groove corresponding in shape. There are so-called "Lock" and "Click" systems, the first of which requires the use of a tool during installation and the possession of appropriate work skills.

The main options for interlocking laminate

When connecting two panels with locks of the “Lock” system, a tight entry of the tongue into the groove is required. The force required for this is provided by the impact of a rubber mallet, which is applied through the gasket to prevent damage. In areas adjacent to the walls, a lever is used for laying.

The advantages of such a system include its lower cost, the disadvantages are the need for careful leveling of the base on which the coating will be laid. The smallest unevenness creates a vertical load on the spike, which the interlock may not be able to withstand. It is also impossible to carefully remove such a coating, the spike breaks off easily, and the lock latch becomes unusable.

The "Click" lock system configuration has a more complex three-dimensional tongue and groove shape. One of the connected panels is laid on the floor, the other is inserted into the groove at a certain angle with a spike, turned in the downward direction with a “click” sound (hence the name of the lock) and is installed in its place.

The advantage of such a system is that the installation can be carried out without the use of tools. In addition, if necessary, it is possible to replace individual elements that have become unusable.

The surface is formed even, without gaps between the panels, well resists the effects of high humidity. Thus, the design of the lock also determines which laminate to choose.

Let's evaluate the decorative properties

Of course, when deciding which laminate is the best for the home, we pay great attention to its appearance. The laminated covering possesses high decorative properties. It can imitate the texture of any type of wood or leather with a high degree of certainty. The richness of the color scheme allows the designer to successfully fit the coating into the interior of any room. As a result of the flooring in the room, the noise level will decrease and it will become warmer.

Variety of laminate finishes to suit every taste

It is not always financial possibilities to cover the floor with parquet made from expensive types of wood. In this case, a much more economical laminate flooring would be a good choice. It looks great, reliable and durable, does not require special care and gives the living space a respectable look.

How significant is the thickness of the panels

The thickness of the panels is of operational importance. With an increase in the thickness of the laminate, the insulating properties of the coating increase in direct proportion. This parameter varies from six to twelve millimeters.

Possible laminate thickness options

Thicker boards are easier to lay, and their interlocks stick more firmly. On the other hand, the thicker the panel, the more expensive it is, so you should select a material with the best price-performance ratio.

Moisture resistance of the coating may be different

Moisture resistance of laminate flooring may vary. This is a very important operational parameter, since when water penetrates inside, the panels are deformed and they fail. In this case, it is necessary to replace not only the damaged elements, but also the panels adjacent to them.

Moisture-resistant laminate can be cleaned with a damp cloth

Otherwise, there will be a smell of decay in the living room, visible fungal infections may appear. The moisture resistance of the coating, in general, is determined by the class of the product: the higher it is, the better the panel resists moisture. It is not recommended to wipe the laminate with a wet cloth, it is better to use a specialized vacuum cleaner that sprays water and immediately draws it in, already contaminated.

Important information is marked on the packaging

Important information about operational features and additional characteristics of the coating in the form of pictograms and drawings is indicated on the packaging. They can indicate resistance to chemicals, ultraviolet radiation from a burning cigarette, sharp shoe heels. There are also icons showing fire safety and antistatic properties. There are a lot of such icons, according to them you can choose a laminate for use in a particular room.

The need to use adhesive and sealant for laying panels

With the advent of improved interlocks, the need to use adhesive for laying panels is becoming a thing of the past. It is unlikely that it will be possible to mount such a coating with your own hands; you will have to invite specialists and pay for their services. The use of sealant is more justified. When installing the cover, the edge of the panel is covered with sealant and it is installed in place. Excess composition is easily removed with a cloth after hardening.

Options for using glue and sealant when installing laminate

The coating produced in this way is highly moisture resistant. Its installation is justified in the kitchen and other rooms with high humidity. At the same time, the assembly time of the coating increases markedly, and you have to pay for the sealant.

Choosing the right underlay

The substrate is placed under the coating to improve its soundproofing qualities and to smooth out minor irregularities in the base. The most expensive material for its manufacture is natural cork, which has excellent soundproofing parameters. Sheets made from it can be fastened with construction tape.

Polyethylene foam, which prevents the growth of bacteria and has good insulating qualities, is much cheaper, therefore it has become the most widespread. The negative quality of such a substrate is the possibility of deformation during laying, resulting in a partial loss of performance.

Laminate flooring options

In the middle price category there is a combined material, in which, in addition to cork, rubber or bitumen components are added. This combination allows you to get average performance. The choice of substrate is determined by the optimal combination of price and quality.

The best laminate - in every room

Choosing a laminate in each room, you should consider its functional purpose. In some rooms, high mechanical strength is required, in others - resistance to temperature fluctuations or resistance to moisture. Of no small importance are the decorative qualities of the coating: they must correspond to the overall interior.

For the kitchen, you should choose a laminate grade with high moisture resistance characteristics. In addition to high humidity, it is often necessary to do cleaning here, so it is advisable to treat the joints of the panel joints with special mastic. The relief structure of the surface has anti-slip properties and will help to avoid injuries from falling.

Laminate in the living room will withstand the load on the floor

For arranging the floor in the bathroom, waterproof grades of laminate are suitable. They should not be confused with moisture resistant models. The former consist of polyvinyl chloride panels that are impervious to water and resistant to temperature fluctuations. In terms of density, they correspond to facing tiles made of ceramic material; additional protection of joints against leakage is provided by rubber inserts.

In residential premises, the soundproofing properties of the coating are of great operational importance. They are determined by the quality of the soundproofing layer, which prevents the occurrence of creaking over time. The latter also improves the thermal insulation properties of the coating. In the corridor and hallway, the selection criterion is the high resistance of the coating to abrasion and moisture.

Laminate quality rating by manufacturer

When choosing a laminate for arranging flooring, you should pay attention to the leading manufacturers of this type of product. For a number of years, a certain rating has developed in the laminate market. The quality rating of laminate by manufacturer is presented in the following table.
