Such a house is good for a young family in which there are (or will be) children and pets. The house is medium in size, but there is enough space for everyone. Each child has their own room. Such houses are in demand among buyers for whom the phrase "American home" is consonant with the "American dream".

american house design

The first thing that catches your eye when you see a photo of an American house is a wide veranda with a neat fence. There are always a few chairs on the veranda, sometimes a table. It's like an outdoor living room. And in front of the house - a well-groomed lawn. This pleasant picture is the face of the whole house, as if saying “Welcome”, hospitable people live here!

Such a house is most often two-story, on a low foundation. The front door is equipped with a wide porch (covered terrace) with stairs. Mostly houses without architectural frills. White facade, dark shutters on the windows. Moreover, the shutters perform a purely decorative function. Sloping roof. A spacious garage is invariably attached to the house. A well-groomed lawn is required in front of the house.

The back yard is spacious, if the size of the site allows. Sometimes there is a pool in the backyard. If there is not enough space for a pool, then at least a barbecue lawn. Often, a golf lawn or a basketball court is equipped in the backyard.

The simple arrangement and design of the American home is due to its history. Not so long ago, cottages in America were built not to last too long. The outer walls are plywood, the inner walls are plasterboard. The reasons:

  • mild climate, allowing you to neglect the insulation of the house;
  • frequent hurricanes destroying houses (thus the house was easy to rebuild);
  • and of course, the relative cheapness of such buildings.

Over time, technologies have been introduced in frame construction to combine the ease of construction with the strength of materials. For example, the use of SIP panels, which we will discuss later. All this helped to become similar houses not only as an economical dwelling, but also to withstand the test of time and weather conditions.

There are several main styles of American houses:

  • colonial;
  • Tudor style;
  • Victorian style;
  • rustic;
  • ranch style.

Layout and interior

The layout of American homes implies a combination of comfort and practicality. Rooms for the rest of the family are a must here. At the same time, there is a place for everyone to retire. Each has its own bedroom. And often, their own bathroom with a toilet.

The house can be entered not only through the front door. Most often, there are two or three entrance doors on the ground floor. Front door or front door, pressed wood or MDF. The back door (often glass) leads to the back patio. The third door is to the workshop, through which you can go to the garage.

All auxiliary rooms are usually located on the first floor. The living rooms are on the second floor. So, on the first floor there is a kitchen, a living room, a hall, a dining room. Also on the ground floor one room can be reserved for an office. The basement is equipped for a library, gym, bar or games room.

The bedrooms are located on the second floor. Sometimes the children's rooms can be on the second floor, and the parents' bedroom on the first. Each bedroom has a dressing room and, as already mentioned, a bathroom with a toilet. On the ceiling, often instead of a chandelier, there is a fan. And lighting is arranged with the help of spotlights or floor lamps.

Auxiliary or working premises:

  1. Wardrobes, built-in wardrobes and pantries are provided for storage.
  2. The washing machine is not installed in the bathroom, but in a special laundry room. Linen can also be dried and ironed here.
  3. The kitchen is always spacious. And very comfortable. Often the kitchen is combined with the dining room, where there is a large dining table and the whole family gathers.

The layout of a one-story American house is similar. The bedrooms are located in the part of the house furthest from the garage. Adjacent to the garage is a workshop, a laundry room, and sometimes a kitchen-dining room.

Building the American way

Using American technology, frame houses are being built that are easy to build and rebuild. The advantage of such technologies is the speed of construction of buildings. Of the main types of construction of American houses, the most popular are:

  • frame modular housing construction;
  • frame-panel house or frame-panel house.

Modular building. Buildings are built in the form of sections (modules). The projects of such American houses are of the same type. It is cheaper to assemble the house directly at the factory and transport it to the place with a special carrier trailer. Often, these are mobile homes that do not have a foundation. The modular house-constructor can be assembled directly at the factory, but it can also be done at the construction site. While the foundation is being poured, sections of the house are mounted nearby. Factory assembly provides for built-in communications and even furniture.

Panel or panel house. The essence of the technology is that the building is assembled from panels (shields, blocks) sewn onto a pre-built wooden frame. Various materials can be used as panels:

  1. OSB board or plywood. Previously, they were widely used to build houses in areas with a mild climate. Not applicable in our context.
  2. Thermoblock. At the heart of the thermoblock is a polystyrene foam insulation in a metal frame. Expanded polystyrene has excellent heat-saving properties.
  3. The so-called SIP panel. The outer walls of the panel are made of OSB, and inside - polystyrene foam. Due to the three-layer structure, such a panel can withstand longitudinal and transverse loads well. Therefore, a SIP house is very durable.

Decoration Materials:

  1. Outside, the house is sheathed with siding or wooden clapboard. Less common brick cladding and tiles.
  2. Interior decoration of walls and ceiling - drywall or lining.
  3. Floor covering - carpet, wood or tile.

The disadvantage of American wooden houses is the increased fire hazard. If the whole area consists of such houses, then everyone can burn down. Therefore, houses are necessarily equipped with smoke detectors. Also, to reduce the fire hazard, OSB boards are treated with a flame retardant, which gives the material the quality of self-extinguishing.

If you are planning to build a house using American technologies, first of all, you need to choose high-quality panels. When buying panels, you must be one hundred percent sure that they are not made in a handicraft way. Make sure that the manufacturing technology meets the standards. Otherwise, the house you built risks collapsing like a house of cards. The fire-fighting treatment of the plates is also important.

The term for the construction of a frame-panel house is from one to three months. It is not difficult to choose a house project suitable for your individual conditions.

Construction stages:

  • foundation pouring;
  • frame construction;
  • installation of floors and roofs;
  • arrangement of all internal communications (sewerage, electricity and others);
  • Finishing work.

The frame is assembled from a bar 150 * 50 mm. Mineral wool is placed between the racks of the frame. The outer wall is mounted from OSB. Then the horizontal crate is mounted. A heater is placed between the crate. If you use SIP panels or thermal blocks, then the horizontal crate with insulation can be omitted.

The horizontal crate is covered with a vapor barrier membrane. And already on top of the membrane, a vertical crate for external finishing material is mounted. A vapor-tight membrane is also laid on the inside of the frame. Then drywall.

Internal partitions can be mounted from a bar 150 * 50 or 100 * 50 mm. Also between the racks is a mineral wool or other rolled insulation. A membrane is attached to both sides of the frame. Then the permanent drywall.

For finishing work, everyone chooses materials to their taste. You can traditionally perform external cladding with siding, or you can use plaster. The interior of American houses is also a matter of taste. Since America is a colonial territory, each nation created interiors of different styles in the same American cottages. Therefore, do not look for a standard, but give scope to your imagination.

Some consider frame houses unsolid, unfounded. Whether it's brickwork. Let's face it: American frame houses are not castles. However, most people with average incomes will agree that the cost-effectiveness of building such houses is a big plus. In the end, comfort is more important for a family than pretentious surroundings. But this does not mean that frame houses are gray and inconspicuous. Photos and videos of American houses made in different design styles are the best proof of this.

American houses, photo:

The bulk of American housing is made up of cozy houses no more than two stories high. The projects of such cottages involve a large family living in them under one roof, where large living rooms and kitchens are located on the first floors, and bedrooms and children's rooms on the second (remember the movie Home Alone;)).

The layout of American houses has features that make it easy and quick to distinguish it from other types of residential buildings:

  • wide porch;
  • the presence of an equipped additional room in the attic;
  • comfortable terraces for reading a newspaper and drinking morning coffee;
  • tiled roofs;
  • bay windows.

Modern projects adapted to our climate. Cottages are being built using frame technology, which involves the use of dry lumber. Next, the wooden frame is insulated and sheathed with OSB boards. This is the simplest construction method and does not require the help of large construction teams. There must be a garage for one or two family cars. The house itself must have good sound insulation, while all finishing materials are exclusively natural.

The style of buildings made using this technology can be called recognizable, but the facade decoration, which the customer chooses independently, will help to make them original and unique.

This construction technology allows you to implement any design ideas without involving complex construction equipment. Despite the absence of the need to use expensive equipment, the cost of houses remains at a premium level due to the implementation of original stylistic solutions and the use of high-quality building materials.

The origins of the American style originate in old European houses - because after emigrating to the United States, the British, Germans, Italians, Poles and other inhabitants of the old world imported their architectural styles and trends to America, which first took root, and then began to develop independently. It is the old European architecture, and in particular the English projects of the Victorian era, that is the foundation american style projects that combine simplicity and functionality. As a rule, American-style houses have light colors, large windows that provide natural light to the project, and a spacious covered terrace.

american house layout

The classic layout of American houses also has some distinctive features. The rooms are usually large and spacious, as a rule, the kitchen area is combined with a dining and living room. There is a wardrobe, a laundry room, a nursery, an office and personal bathrooms in such a house. American-style houses must have a garage for at least two cars, the entrance to which is possible both from the outside and from the inside.

Characteristic features of American houses

Classic American-style houses have some special characteristics:

  1. Non-standard roofs. This characteristic is especially obvious if the house has several floors. In this case, projects have gable roofs with an acute angle of inclination of a complex broken shape at several levels.
  2. The appearance of the building. A feature of this house is a bright facade, as well as the presence of a spacious terrace. The use of natural materials - wood for finishing facades and shutters, natural or artificial stone for finishing foundations and pipes.
  3. The presence of a significant number of large windows. They help with lighting the house and visually increase the interior space due to the large amount of natural light. Due to the milder climate, a completely justified decision.
  4. Very well maintained house territory with clear zoning.

American-style houses are considered one of the most popular in Russia for the construction of suburban structures. This is because such houses have been seen more than once in the movies, in pictures, and, perhaps, with our own eyes. These houses, in addition to their visual appearance, are distinguished by a lot of interesting features that are most often ignored in our country.

In this article, using the example of a photo of an American-style house, we will talk about all its features, origin and construction.

Origin of American Style

The American style was finally formed in the 18th century and it is considered not only an element of the taste of the developers of that time, but also the comfort of the residents.

Americans feel much better in small private houses and believe that having their own independent territory is much better than crowding in apartments of high-rise buildings. In the USA, people live in families and it is not very convenient to settle from five to ten people in one apartment.

Also, the appearance of the style is based on religious principles. In Russia, people profess a completely different Christianity and do not think much about the design of their house, which fits the design of the local church.

In the US, people are used to being distant from others, as everyone shares their views on religion, politics. This is a country of freedom of speech, so all people are different and you want to live separately from the annoying neighbors that you constantly have to see in the entrance. In their opinion, only poor people live in apartments.

Today, the American style has grown to the peak of its development. Gradually improving, under the influence of changes in the world of technology, American homes have become even more interesting, comfortable and in some cases even non-volatile.

It is also worth noting that this kind of houses were built initially because of their environmentally friendly features, as well as the ability to buy those materials that are not produced in the country. Today, this restriction has been lifted, but the inhabitants of the country still adhere to the classic version.

Key Features of American Style Homes

Before creating an American-style house project, everyone always thinks about what other advantages are there that are not yet known?

In fact, they are much more than just a beautiful appearance, interior, and landscape design. The main features of the American-style house include the following:

  • symmetry of the structure;
  • low-rise;
  • attached garage;
  • multiple inputs;
  • vast territory;
  • eco-friendly finish;
  • veranda, terrace or wide porch.

American houses are perfectly symmetrical, which means that there is one even whole structure, which most often resembles the shape of a cube. Americans prefer to build houses not in width, but in height to a greater extent, since they do not always have the opportunity to stretch the house over a large part of the site.

A competent ratio of the frame of the house to the site, as well as the proportional dimensions of the walls, are considered the most convenient option for housing today.

The main feature of the American house is its low-rise. In general, it is not at all necessary to build houses with three floors, and a Russian resident knows this. No one wants to build tall houses, and then heat those rooms in which no one lives.

As a rule, the style lies in a favorable layout, where on the ground floor there is a connection to all communications, as well as a kitchen, a dining room, a bathroom, a living room and offices for work, if necessary. On the second floor there are bedrooms, as well as rooms for personal purposes. One-story American-style houses have fewer rooms and are not equipped with offices.

As with any other residential lot, American Cottages are also equipped with a garage. The only thing is that they most often attach it to the main structure, but if there is no need for additional space, then you can find houses with a built-in garage.

In our country, people are accustomed to metal gates, Americans, in turn, prefer roller shutters or doors that open remotely.

The layout of the American-style house is more complicated. In houses for large families, you can often find several bathrooms (on the first and second floors). It is simpler, more convenient, and if there is free space, you can use it for an additional bathroom.

Also, in such a house there can be two entrances - one front, and the second "service", which leads to the courtyard. Americans like to divide the site into several small areas so that there is somewhere to roam, even if the site itself is small.

As a rule, in Western states not much territory is allocated for personal needs for ordinary citizens. That is why for centuries people have been told that the territory needs to be zoned, which creates the effect of vastness.

On their plots, Americans prefer to do beautiful landscape design more than to plant a row of vegetable crops. This must be taken into account when building a house, since a properly planned site, even a small one, can look much more interesting.

A distinctive feature of the American house from the Russian one is also the environmental friendliness of the finish. Today, more and more often, Russian owners have begun to decorate their premises with environmentally friendly materials, as they have become more affordable both in price and in quantity. Americans love cleanliness and pleasant fresh air, so the environmental friendliness of their homes was noticed hundreds of years ago.

As for the area around the house, various playgrounds are most often built here, terraces, verandas are attached, and a wide porch is made.

As a rule, a beautiful alley leads to the house in front of the entrance to the territory, and the house itself closely borders on the neighboring plot, separating its premises from the neighboring one with a simple fence. American-style home design is all about simplicity without being overly elegant.

American style room decor

Most often, the interior of an American-style house is decorated in cream colors. For this, any suitable tile is selected, as well as other materials that allow you to recreate a classic style that gives some zest from the past.

In this business, Americans are conservative and much less often you can find a high-tech interior or in other versions. Often you can see various wooden structures that complement the interior well.

But the basis of the composition is lighting, which will bring the whole idea to life. Over the past decades, energy-saving light bulbs have been installed in houses in lamps, but ceiling lamps must always give yellow light to everything.

And yes, lamps are an important part of the decor. The more lamps and nightlights, the better. An American-style country house can be done without too much lighting.

Photos of American-style houses

Projects of houses and cottages in the American style are houses characterized by a spacious layout, versatility and convenience. Such projects are mainly designed for, since almost every building is complemented by terraces and asymmetric facades. It is also worth noting the roofs, which, due to their decorative effect, give the house an unusual and original look. Very often you can have a sharp shape, with large angles of inclination.

The frame American house assumes, first of all, the presence of large areas. This style, which appeared back in the colonial era, first spread in states where people were engaged in farming.

Despite the fact that large areas make it easy to implement many of the most incredible design solutions, Americans still prefer to build houses in the construction of which convenience and comfort come first.

American style one-story house project

The layout of the house in America is mostly horizontal, "in breadth." Such buildings have several wings, in which in each subsequent wing the ceiling height is lower than in the previous one. At the same time, each wing has its own, often strongly sloping, roof. The upper floor, in most cases, is an attic, designed for bedrooms.

Often in American homes you can meet, which smoothly pass into the local area. The boundary between the house and the surrounding landscape is even more “blurred” due to the large number of doors and windows, which are an indispensable attribute of housing. In cottages where there is little light, windows and doors, Americans usually feel extremely uncomfortable.

Residents of America pay a lot of attention to the design of backyards adjacent to kitchens and terraces. A recreation area is traditionally located here, etc.

The layout of the American-style house is carried out according to certain rules, taking into account some features. Zoning of the interior takes place in such a way that the guest lingers in the hallway, passing by the gaze of the inner chambers of the owners of the house. For this reason, a guest area is often arranged next to it, where you can safely drink tea at the table, sitting on a comfortable sofa or chairs.

If the layout of the house does not allow making a grand place, then guests are sent to a common room, which includes a kitchen, dining room and recreation area. In parallel with this, the common room acts as a room for family gatherings. Typically, family meals take place either at the dining table or as close to the kitchen as possible. Guests, in turn, are taken at a separate table designed for dinner parties.

Typical layout of a one-story house

When dividing zones, various types of partitions are often used (with the exception of the walls themselves), or pieces of furniture placed in the most suitable way for these purposes. In the kitchen areas there are kitchen islands with built-in washers or stoves. American style is, first of all, simple, but massive furniture of clear forms, with a predominance of one or two light shades.

The recreation area in the common room includes a home theater and. Ceilings are often equipped with additional light sources. In one-story houses, prefabricated lighting predominates, allowing the rafters to be left open. Americans rarely use stretch ceilings, giving more preference to natural materials. Homes in the US are lit with table and wall lights that are turned on at the same time. Ceiling lights are usually used only in the common room, and even then rarely.

The front part of the house is not complete without the use of floor tiles and parquet boards. At the same time, in some parts of the house, these materials are joined with carpet, which allows you to significantly save your money on interior decoration. Under the bedroom, the owners assign the largest room in the house, which is often equipped with its own bathroom and access to the terrace. Children have smaller rooms, the bathroom of which adjoins immediately to all children's rooms.
